View Full Version : Adelaide - Australia
AtD December 21st, 2002, 02:39 PM The smallest of Australia's five cities with a population greater than one million, Adelaide isn't exactly big or tall but is famous for its squares and parklands.
If you frequent Ozscrapers, you would have seen these in my "Adelaide Photos" threads.

AG December 22nd, 2002, 01:14 AM The skyline is fairly average IMO. Most of the skyline is low-rise with a few taller buildings now and then, but the skyline needs to go up.
7/10
Rainier Meadows December 22nd, 2002, 01:21 AM Somewhat boxy and stunted - but this city shows you don't need a tall skyline to have a great city!
6/10
De Snor December 22nd, 2002, 01:23 AM a wide variety of buildings alltough I would like to see it all on 1 pic before rating it !
AG December 22nd, 2002, 01:47 AM Here we go:

chrisaus December 22nd, 2002, 06:56 AM height- 2
density-6
towers-4
set up-5
= around 4 - 4.5
AtD December 22nd, 2002, 07:05 AM The Adelaide City Council is full of NIMBYs who are scared of anything that casts a shadow, which is why we don’t have many talls, but helps the density in the inner-city.
xgokhan December 22nd, 2002, 07:06 AM Not a skyscraper city in the real sense, but it is definitely very beautiful in many aspects. It has also always been the most elusive Australian city for me, as all other major cities in OZ get more coverage than Adelaide. Hell, even Darwin gets more coverage around the world.
X-seed 4000 December 23rd, 2002, 03:51 AM Not that great, not that bad. 6/10.
DaninTO December 23rd, 2002, 11:56 PM Nice to have skylines that aren't always tall but still special. 7/10
SUNNI December 25th, 2002, 02:03 AM small but nice and cool:cool:
7
Jeff from Winnipeg January 2nd, 2003, 07:06 AM It's pretty short and boxy, but it is relatively dense (with short buildings) and I see a crane in that last pic... I forget what I gave it cuz I voted for it a while back but I think it was somewhere between 6 and 7.
SeeMacau January 3rd, 2003, 07:22 AM Adelaide is not small
But the city is not dense
I give it 9/10
breezyboy69 January 3rd, 2003, 08:21 AM i like the city of adelaide, but the skyline is pretty ordinary. 6/10
Noonos January 5th, 2003, 06:01 AM it is a little short but buildings like the austrlis centre save it.
SluuugRadio January 5th, 2003, 07:15 AM 1
parody24 January 5th, 2003, 10:07 AM Adelaide looks OK. Decent skyline for a city that
doesn't seem to be a financial center. I gave it
a 6.5/10.
I've been to the biggest 4 cities of Australia and
thoroughly love each one of them. Someday, I will
have to make it down to Adelaide.
Eddy January 7th, 2003, 05:50 PM there are not many skyscrapers :( but it looks quite ok 5/10
SteelCity32 January 7th, 2003, 10:21 PM not too many dazzling scrapers. But enough. Not too tall.
6.5/10
isoboy January 10th, 2003, 06:19 PM Adelaide's a lovely city and has many good points. But this poll is about rating the skyline and on that score, the best I can give it is 4/10.

seven. adelaide is a great city with a funky square mile full of old tobacconists, vintage clothes shops, antiques, a vibrant old central market, old terrace housing and apartments. some of the suburbs are arguably the most classy and beautiful in Australia.
Fabio July 31st, 2003, 10:09 PM 7/10
nice, but not much impressive
Javier August 12th, 2003, 11:36 PM humm, tiny skyline...
5/10
Mandoza September 4th, 2003, 05:54 AM I used to think it was one sad skyline. But thats before I went there. Adelaide's skyline isnt very photogenic because it lacks anything really tall. But when you're actually walking the streets and gazing up at the high-rises you begin to appreciate it alot more. Some of the towers look quite imposing from the ground. The CBD is pretty dense and has a nice urban feel to it, which in my opinion beats a city with tall skyscrapers without having any street life.
Given that the metro population is only 1 million... I think its skyline suits the population. Gets a decent 5 from me.
As for the city itself, well I was very surprised. Wasnt quite the hick country town I'd imagined it to be. Gotta love all the parks and gardens that surround the city, the excellent culinary scene, cool nightlife, shopping on bustling Rundle street mall, Glenelg beach and the beautiful neighbourhoods. Very charming city that gets downplayed alot.
SeeMacau September 9th, 2003, 12:24 PM The city is quite ok, need some taller skyscrapers
8/10
Trances October 14th, 2003, 10:25 AM Oh wow that sun set photo Gives it so many points look at the gold
+ the ring or park and green add to the "sky line "
But a real center would be nice just one tall to compare
Although it migh make the others look squat
Still
ParraMan January 15th, 2004, 05:08 AM 6
Shape of the skyline is nice, has a focal point round Santos House (the tallest) and slowly spreads out around that. Not enough newer buildings though and not really enough height.
TooFar June 11th, 2004, 12:23 AM 5 for skyscrapers
9.5 for charm
Beautiful City, does not really rate for skyscrapers though, but that is part of it's charm. In my opinion most mid size cities look much the same anyway, so Adelaide stands out in the fact that is not a copy of somewhere else..
Shuzstar June 14th, 2004, 05:30 AM 7 for skyline, definetly needs taller buildings!
too ordinary.
r2 June 29th, 2004, 02:31 AM i'm sure that it's a lovely city, but it's really hurting in the skyline department ... kinda looks like a third tier american city
smartlake July 14th, 2004, 10:29 AM It is ok. For some very odd reason, I see Boise, Idaho looking like that in ten years. That may or may not be a good thing for Boise. ?????????????.
OBman July 30th, 2004, 01:57 AM Currently studyin architecture in Adelaide.... guess wat... i don't get distracted at all... coz there's not much places to hang out here besides the city (CBD) "Rundle Mall" the main shopping street in Adelaide <-- only a small street compared with ones in other Oz cities. Its sad.... according to my lecturers, the architecture in Ad is considered boring, and it is evident.... nothin ever goes on in Adelaide... and they build so slow... it takes them half a year to build a frame of a 5-10 storey building??? my gosh....
anyways.... these are just my random thoughts and opinions.
But one thing to note is that, the city plannin is pretty good, the whole city is basically a square grid, very easy to get around and not much traffic problem. transportatation is also very cheap here.
So it's all good studyin here... not sure bout workin.
So i rate this city 6.5
sueann1 September 16th, 2004, 08:57 AM hmmm adelaide its cool .... no need skyscraper in adelaide... it be a tooth pick on a plate.. haha ... hmm need more cool pic to show of our beloved city my good fren Obman!!! .... haha .... let me show u an example of adelaide superior 15 storey building .. hahaha ....!!!! :omg:

LMCA1990 February 19th, 2006, 03:34 AM 8/10- great city, but its skyline should be bigger for its pop.

Giorgio February 19th, 2006, 06:04 AM Whats wrong with Adelaide skyline? Its elegant and isnt flooded with typical Blue glassy buildings. ;)

Roar/ February 20th, 2006, 12:56 PM I didn't know that, any way I voted ages ago.
FiL February 20th, 2006, 10:41 PM Adelaide has good density in parts of the city and a few interesting old buildings. So it doesnt seem too bad when walking through those areas. However, because the skyline is so low it looks very bleh from any distance. Also, whats with the fascination with green glass on so many of the new buildings. Looks awful.
nitro2038 February 26th, 2006, 04:15 AM Adelaide is one of those places best appreciated at street level. It has many historic buildings and beatiful streetscapes. The taller buildings are pretty boring, but the city would be ruined with a Manhattanised skyline. It's basically a big country town.
myf282828 April 20th, 2006, 02:06 AM Nice and quite township. I like this city. I give it a 9.0.
Dreamlıneя August 5th, 2006, 10:51 PM 9/10 :)

GregPz October 7th, 2006, 01:41 PM Better than I expected. Just needs more height 6/10
forrestcat October 8th, 2006, 07:30 AM I can see Adelaide's skyline from my apartment's window from where I am now.The skyline is kinda flat and dominated by the Santos tower. It should have more tall buildings to match the Santos. But the skyline is a pretty sight for a small city which can still be improved.
I give Adelaide an 8/10
Very Controversial October 8th, 2006, 09:40 AM 7.5/10 Nice.

Captain Howdy December 14th, 2006, 06:39 AM I feel an updated skyline pic needs to be added with an almost completed CC1 clearly in view. While Adelaide is my favourite Australian city, its skyline does not do it any justice. Too bad about that stinkin airport (although it is fantastic its way to close to the city)! We need more talls!
Cosmopolitan December 14th, 2006, 07:23 AM It's a nice town :) I like it, but is a shame that doesn't have a boom of skyscrapers like Melbourne. However, good things come in small packages.
7.5/10
maximus_marc January 23rd, 2007, 09:32 AM Adelaide's skyline is nice and considering the the city population its good. Adelaide's CBD is lucky when you consider it doesn't have any of those ugly public housing high-rises that are still present around Melbourne's CBD and most of the buildings in the CBD and outskirts are respectable or very nice.
Adelaide has entered its latest building boom and its the biggest of them all and give the city some years and then the CBD/skyline will be even better and denser.
maximus_marc January 23rd, 2007, 09:55 AM took these after staying for some nights at the Liberty Towers at Glenelg - Sorry the quality isn't great but I had to put the quailty setting to average because memory card was pretty full.

Pozei have you ever been to Adelaide? I was reading a comment by you in the OZ section where you didn't like the colours of the buildings in Adelaide?!?! You thought it made the city look grey? Adelaide is a great looking city, and yes even though its skyline has been stagnate, it doesn't mean whats going down on the street level is stagnate. Adelaide has a lot going for it right now, and a lot happening. You can have every opinion you want about Adelaide, but when you dish out lies instead of opinions I'm gonna call you out on that. BTW, the colours of Adelaide's skyline look fine to me.

UrbanSG October 23rd, 2008, 01:36 PM Adelaide is not well know internationally but we are currently booming after almost 20 years of stagnation thanks to the State Bank collapse of the early 90's. Unfortunately the credit crisis has now come along and who knows how many more developments will go ahead. We are also home to Olympic Dam (planned to become the largest mine in the world, who knows how long that will take with the credit crisis though).
Here are some pics from flickr and a couple by me.

romanito May 24th, 2011, 05:02 PM Great city, amazing pictures...
linum July 27th, 2011, 12:58 PM Adelaide has the weakest skyline of the 5 majors... the Gold Coast which has 1/2 the population of RADelaide - it's skyline is 10 times bigger than Adelaide's...
bijtkonijn July 27th, 2011, 03:37 PM Where are the skyscrapers?:ohno: 4/10
linum July 27th, 2011, 10:54 PM The citys tallest building is 132m which means ADL has no skyscrapers - just the odd highrise... for a city of 1.2 million and I know South Australians will crap on about the wine ;) but the Adelaide skyline is pretty f#cking dull...
Geocarlos August 3rd, 2011, 03:32 AM Needs more modern glassy highrises........8/10

RioARCHTQTO October 31st, 2011, 03:47 AM 7/10 - nice and dense, but needs 15 or more taller buildings, taller than the city's tallest. :)
dajumper November 2nd, 2011, 03:29 AM easily forgettable
MelboyPete November 2nd, 2011, 05:33 PM If Adelaide could get at least a couple of >200M+ buildings with iconic design it's skyline would would improve immeasurably.
