I totally forgot about this tower, I havn't been in this thread in about 6 months.

Great to see pics of the inside...I actually quite like the cladding.

Also that roundabout accross the road is great.

This tower in Birmingham may be shorter than the Beetham Tower in Manchester, but the Birmingham tower is definately more graceful & classy. The Manchester building looks really awkward, and looks as if it was designed by a 3 year old child!

That's a slightly sweeping statement. IMO The Manc one looks magnificent
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=7616669#post7616669

I prefer HCTs more complex form but love the colour of the Manc one and height isn't everything. Having said that I think what has been built here in Bham was the right thing to do as it's brought a bit of colour to our otherwise grey / brown skyline but it should have been a little taller.

I'd love to see the curved lowrise (scala House?) which was the Laing site office reskinned in darker swiss re glass.

Given the choice between the two Beetham's I still prefer HCT. Yes it would have been really cool with a few more floors, but it has character and a presence, whereas the Manchester building looks like yet another non-descript slab. Reminds me of the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey

I like HCT very much but the Manchester tower is in another league, dont you think,I have seen both in the flesh and the Manchester tower is a jaw dropping sight when you are on Deansgate inparticular. People just walking past it can't help but crane their necks up in amazment at the size of it. I didnt get the same sense of awe at HCT when I saw it,in fact I was a little dissapointed. Also I don't like the way the pattern on the front of HCT just changes half way up,it spoils it for me where as the Beetham/Hilton in Manchester has proper distinction between the resi/hotel in the form of a cantilever and banding effect which works very well. As far as the slab effect of Beetham/hilton I think it works very well here, a curved tower would not relate to the surrounding streets very well.Whats wrong with slabs anyway, this tower is like two and a half of your hyatts stacked on top of each other but with blue/green cladding. Still I like HCT and its curved facade works well in its location as does the rectangular mass of Beetham/Hilton for its location.Mr Simpson has obviously thought about both towers and their surroundings carefully.

Hct is surrounded by tall buildings. Manc isnt.

Hct would also look far better with nothing but low rise surroundings.

On which Beetham ,HCT or Hilton? If you mean the Manc tower then yes it will look better when fully cladded and the protecting cards are taken out of the windows,if you mean HCT then what you see now is what you get.

I saw this thing on TV once where they lit up each floor in turn on a glass skyscraper and it looked really cool. Maybe they should do that with HCT?

The Raddison hotel/HCT was heaving with Americans and Japanese visitors over the weekend, many of them having arrived here earlier in the week, and here for the world's largest dog show, Crufts, at the NEC. One conversation went along the lines of how impressed they were with the hotel, and, the monorail at the airport, which apparently was adjudged to be one of the best they had used, anywhere.
If these kind of messages get back to their country-folk in their respective homelands, then this sort of word-of-mouth recommendation of the city can only add greatly to the marketing people's task of promoting what is good in Brum, to an international audience.

I quite like the brown thing too, AMakes me think of the Ministry of truth in 1984, though it could do with integrating better with hill street rather than a load of gratings, maybe some shops or something...

Likelyhood is however it not going anywhere, BT say that the building is being rationalised at the moment as only 5% of the stuff in there is being used, needless to say this will take a long time, Also there is a link to the Anchor system there, and BT are still a bit twitchy about admitting that.

Any chance of the Holiday Inn getting knocked down, It is awful and a big tower there would make smallbrook Queensway look ace.

Probably Central News on ITV - great view. The BBC have a terrible viewcam looking towards FiveWays tower but along the really depressing brown canalside buildings. For heaven's sake, either swing it around towards Quayside or move it so it looks at HCT and Orion! Why doesn't somebody at the BBC realise the negative viewcam and change it. I might message them about it right now.

"For heaven's sake, can somebody there please swing the existing viewcam around so that it doesn't look along a very depressing canal towards FiveWays Tower? Just to the right is a great view of Broad St's towers, or better still, how about from the front of the Mailbox towards the new Radisson Hotel / Orion Building. The existing view really gives off a negative image that Brum's spent so long trying to remove. The least the BBC can do is try to emulate Central's perspective and show Brum's wonderful skyline somehow.
Please sort it!"

There you go! That's better.

Well, you DO know that on some photo-edit programmes, there is a filter button you can press which gives you that "instant 70s picture postcard look" about the pictures you're retouching yeah?

Well, on my computer I also have in addition to that feature an even more exclusive one which, at the press of a button, enables me to instantly increase the heights of any towers I wish - therefore you get this stunning result looking at the very same picture that you see above! :tongue2:

If buildings could talk, maybe HCT would be a rapper?

Soething like this?

Hello

1-I wish I was little bit taller,
I wish I was a baller,
I wish I had a girl who looked good
I would call her
I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat
and a six-four impala

I wish I was like six-foot-nine
So I can get with Leoshi
Cause she don't know me but yo she's really fine
You know I see her all the time
Everywhere I go, and even in my dreams
I can scheme a way to make her mine
Cause I know she's livin phat
Her boyfriend's tall and he plays ball
So how am I gonna compete with that
'Cause when it comes to playing basketball
I'm always last to be picked
And in some cases never picked at all
So I just lean up on the wall
Or sit up in the bleachers with the rest of the girls
Who came to watch their men ball
Dag y'all! I never understood, black
Why the jocks get the fly girls
And me I get the hood rats
I tell 'em scat, skittle, scabobble
Got hit with a bottle
And I been in the hospital
For talkin' that mess
I confess it's a shame when you livin' in a city
That's the size of a box and nobody knows yo' name
Glad I came to my senses
Like quick-quick got sick-sick to my stomach
Overcome by the thoughts of me and her together
Right?
So when I asked her out she said I wasn't her type
(rpt 1, 1)

I wish I had a brand-new car
So far, I got this hatchback
And everywhere I go, yo I gets laughed at
And when I'm in my car I'm laid back
I got an 8-track and a spare tire in the backseat
But that's flat
And do you really wanna know what's really whack
See I can't even get a date
So, what do you think of that?
I heard that prom night is a bomb night
With the hood rats you can hold tight
But really tho' I 'm a figaro
When I'm in my car I can't even get a hello
Well so many people wanna cruise Crenshaw on Sunday
Well then I'ma have to get in my car and go
You know I take the 110 until the 105
Get off at Crenshaw tell my homies look alive
Cause it's hard to survive when your livin'
In a concrete jungle and
These girls just keep passin' me by
She looks fly, she looks fly
Makes me say my, my, my
(rpt 1, 1)

I wish I was a little bit taller y'all
I wish I was a baller...
I wish I was a little bit taller y'all
I wish I was a baller (3)

Hey, I wish I had my way
'Cause everyday would be a Friday
You could even speed on the highway
I would play ghetto games
Name my kids ghetto names
Little Mookie, big Al, Lorraine
Yo you know that's on the real
So if you're down on your luck
Then you should know just how I feel
Cause if you don't want me around
See I go simple, I go easy, I go greyhound
Hey, you , what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
Ahhhh, yes, ain't that fresh?
Everybody wants to get down like dat
(rpt 1, 1)

I wish, I wish, I wish (fade out)

I recall that the roof garden over the NCP carpark was part of the planning submission but it clearly stated that the applicant did not control the adjacent site so the proposals were purely for illustration. At the time Cala had a competing proposal for the same site but including the Albany and the NCP car park.

Yes, but the Cube is only 11m shorter then the Sentinels and surely Arena Central can accomodate a spire without reducing the roof height, didnt it already have planning permission for a spire to take it over 200m?

Well blow me you learn somat new everyday.

Was it all originally plant (I read about the tunnels) and telecoms equipment? There must be lots of space and empty areas as telecoms equipment is fraction of its former size nowadays. Do people still actually work in there? They must have a high turnover of staff with everyone committing suicide after working in that building for a few months.

Congratulations, Foxy & the missus-to-be. You certainly do things in style

Great pics btw, although to be honest I do prefer Brum at night because some of those nearby towers and rooftops looked decidedly rough in broad daylight

Hopefully in a few years time and the redevelopment of the area gathers pace you'll probably check into the same room on your 10th anniversary and take pics of much more sexier buildings that will look cool during the day as well as night

I used to work at one of its sister hotels.
They have been trying to get rid of this for a while and there has been some discussion of total demolition, which we could hope for.

But i guess substantial refurbishment is good.

Dunno if it's good news about Holliday Inn getting investment... means it'll be here to stay for another while at least. If it's only internal, and they're spending millions, then it'll still look pants, but they won't want to knock it down after splashing out....

But because of it's height the Manchester one is the better building.

And what for? because some drunk plane pilot might crash into it? Just as the can the BT Tower?

I saw it too - but as ever they had to go and get the figures wrong didn't they?.... they said it stood 564 feet high when we all know it stands 561 feet. And not just that - they said the highest floor (the one where Ian Simpson and the reporter were broadcasting from) was [the alleged] 564 feet above the street when the BLADE is the highest point at what is correctly 561 feet..... Can't trust these idiots to get things right can we?

I don't think the CAA regs can stand long term. Go on Google Earth and look at Canary Wharf and London City Airport. Look how CLOSE CW is to the airport, AND the runway POINTS STRAIGHT AT the development!!

Then look at Brum by comparison, the orientation of the runway (and the proposed 2nd one) plus the distance from the city centre....

I know the CAA say that the height above sea level which is the main factor, but which area would you say is at higher risk of somehing happening?

Sooner or later, someone will challenge it in court, and it will be history!

All I can think is the flight path goes around Brum and not over it. If a plane goes over Brum something is wrong, such as it's about to crash into the ground. One crashing into the Bull Ring killing 100,000 people is far worse than a 150m tower with 5,000 people in it. :hm:

Did someone drop a big 'B' with the cladding then I wonder?

Don't you think those two 'spikes' look a bit pathetic and quite frankly wasted where they are? - why couldn't they be taller so you could see them from the other side of the tower, and look as if they are on the roof, just like in the original render - with the red beacons on top of each one?

But, let's not forget that Smiley has this amazing camera that, due to its telephoto ability, can make EVERY building look much taller than it really is - thus completely flattering to deceive.
