Never heard of the city before, very interesting, all that alpine architecture influence. Very nice. Thank you.

Joinville has more than 500.000 inhabitants and was founded by germanic inmigrants; today having portuguese, blacks and descendents from other races in its population. It's the biggest city in Southern Brazil after Curitiba and Porto Alegre.

It seems like it's cooler now in Brazil, no ? I see alot of people wearing long sleeves on these photos. I think of Brazil of being a very hot & humid place. I also noticed alot of that "Alpine German-Austian architectural influence" in alot of Brazilian cities and some Japanese looking ones also. Are there alot of people in Brazil of German Decent ? Thanks for sharing.

I didn't know that city existed

for some reason, it reminds me a bit some areas of bogota, maybe the rain and some of the houses with that achitecture.

Joinville is known for being a pretty humid place, according to a forumer from there it rains 220 days a year. That's due to the big mountains surrounding the city.

The city had Norweigian (sp?), Swiss and German colonization and later some Portuguese too. It's the only city in Santa Catarina's coast with this kind of colonization. Actually this city has even a BEACH, but it's not very vamous heheheh...

Right now it's winter in Brazil and down here in the south it usually RAINS before the cold comes, and we unfortunately got a rainy day. Today it's VERY sunny, there aren't any clouds in the sky... :(

@Stormshadow: southern Brasil is outside the tropics. While the southernmost brazilian capital, Porto Alegre, is only at parallel 30S, the southern atlantic receives its waters from Antartica, unlike Europe which is heated by the warm Gulf Current from central america. So it gets cold... not as cold as European winter.

It snows in heights over 500 meters in the winter... and there is frost and such things. But it seems it was much colder in the 19th century, with german and italian immigrants reporting blizzards and 2 meters of snow back in 1850. Now, it hardly snows at sealevel.

If someone had showed some of the pics and told me that they were taken in Germany, I would have believed it.....not true for most of course, but a few.

By the way, how did it get to be named Joinville ? Just a curiosity, it's not a German name and doesn't sound portuguese either

The land where Joinville is located was part of the French & Brazilian Royal Family Wedding gift in the mid 19th century = they never made it to the live there, but a Royal Palace was built to their honor around 1860 - it is a local National Museum now, housing the "Royal" home with beautiful palm trees accessing the site, right in the center of the city."

there are other brazilian cities founded by germans with "german" names... but not all of them have german names of course.

Thanks for the information Boom & AcesHigh. Brazil is a very beautiful place, a very large country with different weather & terrain features, large cities too. If I ever will move out of my city, and that's if, a Brazilian city will be it for me. I like cooler weather so maybe the south of Brazil will please me. :cheers:

Thanks for the interesting info Aces. I have seen pics of Blumenau, although I have heard that the most "germanic" Brazilian city is Pomerania.

^ It's Pomerode, I went there to take some pics this Sunday heheh. It was raining, the pics are dark and I'm lazy, another forumer, Farrapo, went with me so I'll wait for him to post his pics. :D

hahaa. batw that building on pic 43 has a facade (front) very similar to Edifício Sede 3 - Banco do Brasil in Brasília (compare pictures)

These picture above is the Banco do Brasil.

I was born in Joinville and I always lived there. Ppl that see these pictures think Joinville is small, but its very big 'cause there are a lot of "towncenters" in the suburbs. Thats why its seems small, Joinville is not centralizated.

Great pics of a very beautiful country!! I will move this to the new Urban Showcase for original photography!
