Pros: Diversity, height (Not bad for being in a dry lake and a freakin earthquake zone), density (Atleast in some areas) modern architecture (Torre Mayor, BMV) old architecture (Chapultepec castle) Unique architecture (Look at those towers in the 3rd pic). And my favorite... the city has great natural surroundings! It has 2 tall as mountains in the background!
Cons: Not dense enough, in most areas. The tall towers are way too spread out... they have too many financial centers and most are far apart from another. Though its in an earthquake zone... I think that they can still build taller and denser. And the biggest problem is... *drum roll* Pollution!
So basically Mexico city has a great skyline... you just can't enjoy it with the pollution... this is true in many Chinese cities too :( This is hard to decide, the city has very many great areas... but it also has a lot of bad things... but on clear days you can really enjoy the city... besides, look at the first picture!
so I give it an 8.5/10
Look at its settings!

Many skyscrapers the tallest 225m, some areas of concentration but spread out each other, with a couple more of skyscrapers concentrated in one of the CDB's could be improved greatly.

these are the best mexico city pics I've seen in a long time.. buildings are spread out but there are some nice clusters as well... plus it's handicapped being in an earthquake zone. more buildings like torre mayor and it'd look really great. 8.5

The skyline looks nice...and dense.
But i think there should be more skyscrapers for the city w/ this large population.

Mexico City has unique buildings due to its engineering and architecture related to the country's culture and to the fact that the city is built where there used to be a lake and a very active earthquake area. I give it an 8.5
Now the local government is investing a lot of money to improve the historic district and the financial and touristic downtown area (Reforma Ave.) You should come down to see it in the summer (where there´s less pollution) It looks REALLY GOOD!
If you come, ask for a window seat in the right side of the airplane, you'll have a great view from there!:guns1:

Great towers, nice skyline, but lacks density, some extra 20 story towers spread in CBD would be great

The bad thing about Mexico city is that there is no 1 CBD but several ones, so buildings are far form each other.

I give it a 9/10
This city is huge, the skyline does need more tall buildings. The buildings are very unique like BMV and ofcourse Torre Mayor, Torre Latinoamericana and the World trade center.
The Chapultepec park reminds me of Central park. ;)

I agree the city is very nice, i just dont think it deserves a high mark like a 7 maybee a 5 at max after seeing those other pictures, There is one that sort of looks like central park, very nice, and another part that resembles a mount royal view in montreal i agree its a beautiful city i just dont agree the syline is that impressive. Also to the comment it dosnt matter how many people are there, while im sorry but i thik it does, a city of 22 million people in my opinion should stand very tall, look at chicago with just over 10 and how tall it stands, Also im not talking economics here when i said sao paolo is the leader i was saying for Latin America Sao Poalo has Mexico City beat just as i would say NYC has Miami Beat if we were reffering to a US city.
I stand firm

Mexico City city is way too big. so it can hardly be green enough. However green it may look in some pictures, many poor areas don't really get any of that.
As far as pollution is concerned, it is not as bad as it used to be, say 10 years ago. Back then you just couldn't ignore smog. It was too annoying...
Now we seem to get a fair share of not so filthy days. At least, I personally don't think about pollution in my city as much as I used to in the past. That must mean that there have been some improvements. The traffic is still hell, though.
By the way, I think this city could have been a really green one, because we get a lot of rain around here. Unfortunately we haven't been wise enough to increase the green areas so much that they can really make up for sprawl.

It Is Supposedly Said That Mexico City Has Three Financial / Comercial Districts Because Of It´s Size. It´s Bigger Than Sao Paulo, And Even La. Why Do You Think Ny Is Overcrowded With Skyscrapers ???? Most People Working In Ny Live In Jersey City Or Other "satellite" Cities.

The more Mexico City pictures I see, the more convinced I am that it doesn't really have much of a skyline. Some of the pics in this thread are really enjoyable, but as far as the skyline is concerned, they don't really show anything impressive. I guess we just don't have a "world class" skyline, the kind to be expected from such a big city.
By the way, what I just said wouldn't (or won't in the future) necessarily apply to Santa Fe, an amazing residential and financial district located in West Mexico City, which soon (a year or two) will have a kick-ass skyline. Maybe it'll need a few super tall buildings, but it'll have lots of really good looking fairly tall ones. The bad news is it'll be Santa Fe's skyline (rather than Mexico city's), so far away from downtown that it'll remain invisible and virtually inexistent to most city dwellers and visitors.

people here on this forum are saying that Mexico city doesn't have an impressive skyline but i think they forgot about the tragic earthquake in 1985 that destroyed a huge part of their buildings.. and i really think that it's a great city and they are doing a great job rebuilding it...
Sao Paulo and Mexico City 2 great city in latin america !!!!

The bad thing about Mexico city is that there is no 1 CBD but several ones, so buildings are far form each other.
To each his own, but the very fact there is more than one CBD makes Mexico City one of my favorites. Density can mean just a bunch of buildings with nothing standing out. Mexico City reminds me a bit of old NYC, and I really like the look. But there can be no argument here because what we like is not objective.

Mexico City is built in a lake??? I thought that it was built on top of a mountain in a highly seismic active area. That is probably they dont build high skyscrapers.

Yes it was, that's why many buildings sink every year little by little plus it sits on a seismic fault.

several nice skylines throughout the city
great natural setting with snow-capped volcanoes to the southeast as well as nice pine forest mountain surroundings
massive city
awsome neighborhoods
great, unique buildings (including one of the most modern in the world)
extra points for being in an extremely seismic zone (and on top of unstable lake ground
several towers that have survived major earthquakes (of more than 8.0 on richter scale)
not bad at all after having been virtually wiped out in the septermber 19 and 20th 1985 quakes

mexico city is simply amazing and awe-striking. to think that this city houses more than 20 (yeah more than 20) million people is just unbelievable. i have had the privilege to visit this great city various times in the past and trust me when i tell you that is is a very frightening place to be in. No, not because of all the violence and kidnappings, but because of its massive size. i remember witnessing its sheer size from the plane, and it seems as though it never ends. it is quite an impressing view. well, anyways, i don't think mexico city's skyline is all that great, however, i really enjoy some of its skyscrapers. i have notice that mexico city is very rich in architectural styles, in a way that many other cities in the world are not. some of its buildings are quite amazing and the way they implement their surroundings by using very exotic colors and styles, makes it very interesting. i also enjoy the fact that a great number of their buildings have very unique geometrical styles, which add to the exotic atmosphere that this city possesses. i belive that mexico city has the best skyline in latin america....way better than sao paulo and argentina.

I'm apparently in a minority here. I think Mexico City's city-scape/skyline is dazzling. Looks to me like the entire city IS the skyline!
The main thoroughfare is regal, and the skyline looks promising:)

You should to update the news, pollution in Mexico City has decreased during the last fifteen years, now is hardly much more polluted than cities like Los Angeles in USA.
You should learn more about Chemistry Nobel Prize, Mario Molina, and his recent research about air quiality in the Valley of Mexico. ;)

Parts of the skyline, pictures by Melkor2004, taken today, in this ¿¿¿so polluted??? city...:D

the skyline isn't that great, but the geological features behind it are dazzling.
7/10
Nevertheless, I'm sure that MC's skyline is definitely way more interesting than the Steel City's. Besides, your hometown _until very recently_ was considered one of the most unattractive cities in the US; both because of its backwardness and its lack of quality infrastructure and international refinement. But mainly because Pittsburgh's industrial stacks belched black smoke day and night! Furthermore, until recently people in Pittsburgh did even know what international cuisine was. So you shouldn't talk much about other places being "not so great" taking in consideration where you come from!
So remember, Mexico City is one of the most sophisticated cities in the world not only because it is an international trade, cultural, historical and entertainment center but because it's extremely cosmopolitan. Therefore those characteristics reflect on the city's varied skyline!
Thanks!
Aires Managüenses

So basically Mexico city has a great skyline... you just can't enjoy it with the pollution... this is true in many Chinese cities too :( This is hard to decide, the city has very many great areas... but it also has a lot of bad things... but on clear days you can really enjoy the city... besides, look at the first picture!
so I give it an 8.5/10
Look at its settings!
http://www.armscenter.com/xseed4000/10091581.jpg
MC does not need to be denser! It's dense enough! Besides, Mexico City is not China where there's too many people.
So I give MC a 9 for having an awesome mix of old and new, manmade and natural, grand and simple, tall and short...

I can think of thousands of much uglier buildings than "Torre Latinoamericana". Personally, I can't say that I love it, but I don't hate it either. However, I definitely think it's misplaced. It doesn't belong in the old quarter. Somewhere along Paseo de la Reforma would have been a much better location.

I think that Padawan's comment was a compliment and a greeting... :)
Which is how I took it. My bad I was about to go on a juvenile rampage ( tons of black coffee) But Mexico City ( while it doesn't have the skyscraper bulk I would crave) does not deserve any less than what I gave it. If this wasn't about skyscrapers you know you would have gotten so much more than a lousy 6.5

Freaks me out as the skyline is spread so far afield. Not a supertall skyline, but so many points of interest with such a variety of design. One of the skylines which takes more than just seconds to take in.

It's a skyline made of nice clusters. Some clusters would rate at 10, but as a whole I think it deserves an 8.0...

Beautiful city but to BIG! 7.5/10 in average of the different skylines. The Torre Latinoamericana is very nice and it must have an excellent view.

Mexico City is beautiful, specially areas like Reforma, Santa Fe and Polanco.
The only problem I see is that is too big.... I think as a mexican you can have maybe a better quality of life in cities like Monterrey, Guadalajara or Vallarta.

I don't think so, human development indexes are high or very high in almost every part of the city, and options are extremely wider than in any other place in the country (and the region). So, if you have enough education, information and resources, you can have very high life quality....

What about pollution, crime rates and crowded transport system?
I have nothing against Mexico City, I find it very nice indeed, but I would rather prefer to live a pleasant life in Vallarta overlooking the Caribbean and breathing purer air.
But thats just my opinion.

Well, pollution and crime rates have decreased.... and by the way, with no offense, Vallarta overlooks the Pacific, not the Caribbean!!!

Well, the pollution is a problem here, but it's not as bad as it used to be in the 80's and early 90's. About crime rates, I don't know any statistics, but I can say that I've lived all my life in Mexico City and I have never had any problems on that regard, and believe me, I'm not particularly cautious. Finally, the subway would be much more functional and pleasant if it wasn't sieged by rather chaotic outdoor markets, yet it's still a much better option than buses, which in general suck big time.

And yes, Mexico City is improving. I personally think that the new mayor is an idiot, but who cares ? It is the citizens who make their city better, isn´t it?

You can have your cake and eat it too.
Actually most well heeled Mexicans have a home in one of the many fabulous resorts...Cabo, Vallarta, Acapulco, Cancun, Huatulco etc. or out in the country...Valle De Bravo, San Miguel, Jurica or any of the safe well preserved quaint little colonial towns in nearby states.
:) Options are wonderful.:)

I share your opinion in 90%. Evidently for those who like to live in small towns, Mexico City would not be the first option, but even in that case there are a lot of very good options, you can live in a very safe and pleasent house, work in a world class firm and study in a very well ranked university in some of the many "inner towns" of the city, like Coyoacan, San Angel, Tlalpan, la Roma or La Condesa (and some more). You can have everything around and you don't need to do very large trips, because you have very near many options and nice places.
And about pollution you need to update your info, the problem is not very different to the other cities you mentioned (exception of Vallarta) and that is not as relevant or problematic that you would decide to leave the city. I don't know any body getting sick or something like that beacuse a direct link with pollution.

Of course. And I can see, through those pictures, that the city is getting better. By the way, Santa Fe looks pretty awesome.

I am not sure why compare it to Sao Paulo, but since you mentioned it ...
I have been to both cities in the last year and ... yes, Sao Paulo has many more buildings, but most are old and it bad need of repair. Also, when I visited I got the impression that in Mexico City there are a lot of projects coming up all over (a sort of boom, if you want), which is not what I noticed in Sao Paulo.
