Watched one night in may - and it brought tears to my eyes.

I also taped coast, which featured Liverpool, and that was rubbish. Showed the 3 graces predictably and mentioned how the city grew largely from the slave trade. Very vague. Can't have featured Liverpool for more than 7 or 8 minutes in an hour long programme.

Pietari
August 11th, 2005, 04:23 AM
I also saw the prog which although it showed some nice pics was disappointing and I don`t belive accurate in commentary regarding those `symbols of slavery` no matter how well intentioned regarding a very different and terrible period.

The time scale of the commentary was just wishful thinking as symbols of slavery would not (I think) be used in commercial architechure design in the 20th century - despite the fact that Liverpool currently intends to open a new slavery museum and already displays many historical records on the subject.

The oft used comment that the bricks of Liverpool are cemented with the blood of slaves is as accurate as the fact that my father and grand fathers were plucked out of the `workers pens` to work on the Liverpool docks as required `last century` and as abhorent.

Prisoners of war and prisoners of the need to work accordingly.

Did anyone see the programe on Liverpool in the slave trade last night ? The programe was on channel 5 and it was called 'The Empire pays back'. It outlined Liverpool but more particularly London and it's involvement in the slave trade. The presenter was down Water Street explaining how Martins bank was connected to the business. Quite interesting stuff.

Scarecrow
August 16th, 2005, 03:20 PM
Bloody stupid programme. He wants £7.5 trillion in reparations. If he gave a factual and balanced view of the slave trade it might've been worth watching. Instead he came across as bit of a dickhead. Who gets this £7.5 trillion? Should it also be payable over a period of 200 years? How much do the African countries who sold Britain the slaves have to contribute? Should we cut off financial aid to these countries to ensure they foot the bill? What the fuck was he doing going around banks and placing anti-slavery signs outside? Am I guilty by association too because I opened a bank account with a bank which was later taken over by another bank which had taken over another bank 100 years previous which was itself acquired a bank that was involved in the slave trade? :?

Don't forget the £7.5 trillion included compound interest. Who would pay the compound interest? The banks who he campaigned against? How many slaves would have put their entire life earnings into a high yeilding bank account for 200 years anyway? :?

As for the gullible yes men who gave him that figure, they should be thrown out of whatever financial institutions they represent. I'm all for a memorial. A serious symbol of rememberance should be erected in Liverpool and one in London too. Reparation? Fuck off! Find me a slave or person directly or indirectly affected by the slave trade and we'll talk. 200 years is a bit late for reparation if you ask me.

General Zod
August 16th, 2005, 03:52 PM
I think everyone accepts the slave trade is wrong but you cannot hold anyone accountable at this point. If the presenter wants reparations then you could take that argument to extreems and hold the French (Normans) Nowegian (Viking) and Italian (Roman) governments for messing with our people centuries ago too.

I don't think it was necessary to go down the roads in putting a figure on the human life costs because it is a nonsense figure ultimately and it proves and solves nothing. I agree with him that there should be a monument but if you paid money out who would get it ? Still, the programme provoked thought and debate.

I saw the program just after it started.....

Unfortunate though the slave trade was then - and it must be remembered that Africans played a very active role in it - by providing so many of the `prisoners` of tribal conflicts etc.

`Slavery` is still an active 21st century world wide issue, child forced labour and in the various sex industries including women and men also forced into meanial work.

My gut feeling remains that the programs (Channel 5 and BBC 1 `Coast) were little more than mud raking - I`m only surprised that `Nelsons Monument` in `Exchange Flags` wasn`t used to illustrate the `Slaves in chains` - which has been falsely enshrined in Scouse myth for years.

They are in fact emblomatic of the `prisoners of war` of Nelsons four naval victories and nothing to do with assumed slavery. (see also below.)

With regards to the Cunnard building the `figure heads` include examples of `all races` and many nations from around the globe....again nothing to do with salvery - which is rightly abhorent.

Bending the truth will not however help the cause no matter how well intentioned - which I hope it was.

Tomlinson reprising role of Bassett

Former Brookside actor Ricky Tomlinson is to star in a new six-part comedy series for ITV1.

Reprising the role he created for Mike Bassett: England Manager, the show will hit TV screens this autumn.

Following his moderate success as England boss, Mike wants one last chance of the big time after an otherwise undistinguished managerial career.

He's offered a job at Wirral County - a team his dad once played for - and believes he can resurrect the side, currently languishing at the bottom of their league.

Bassett has fallen on hard times since reaching the latter stages of the World Cup.

He takes the post at the struggling Ellesmere Port-based side, much to the annoyance of Karine, played once again by Amanda Redman.

Sioned William, controller of ITV comedy, said: "Mike Bassett was a huge hit in cinemas and we are thrilled to be bringing these great characters back in this new incarnation. It's wonderful to have worked with such great actors and talented writers."

Steve Edge, who will be familiar to viewers thanks to Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, joins the cast as Bassett's coaching partner Doddsy.

Mike Bassett: Manager's writers, Rob Sprackling and John Smith said: "We can't wait till Bassett hits the small screen.

"His hapless antics at the bum end of the football league are the perfect antidote to the super cool glamour of the Premiership."

It's a rotten old mess and needs attention. When you come out of the tunnel - one of the entrances to the city- you are faced with a run down area that is quite grim. It needs investment. The are abandoned houses and pubs that are deteriorating and the council don't seem interested in taking any care or action.

No there isn't.
You mean away from the City. The derelict pubs are currently being refurbished, the Hamlet Hotel will be on sale as private accommodation shortly. There's only one block that's abandoned due to a fire in '04 and that's just off Scottie on Kirkdale Road.

no it was on bbc 1 and was called inside out it was saying that the tunnel was planned for south liverpool. But their was too much objection so they picked the poorest area in liverpool and built a giant dual carrigeqway through the whole area.it was a disgraceful some good footage from the 60s of smashed up houses and streets no wonder its rundown still its never recovered from being almost fully demolished.

The tunnel approach is horribly over-engineered. They could fill in the entire eastern side, rework the the traffic through on the western side and reopen acres of land either for a new public park or some decent redevelopment opportunity. Royal Hospital anyone? :?

1000lb river bomb havoc - the bomb was found during Operation Rococo .....

1000lb river bomb havoc May 16 2006

By Kate Mansey & Greg O'Keeffe, Liverpool Echo

RAIL, road and ferry travellers were stranded today after a huge World War II bomb was found in the River Mersey.

Two ferries from Ireland, with more than 240 passengers onboard, were forced to wait in the river mouth, the Wallasey Tunnel was closed and trains on the Wirral Loopline halted after the 1,000lb German bomb was uncovered near the Twelve Quays ferry terminal, Birkenhead.

The bomb - the same size as the device detonated in the World Trade Centre in 1993, which killed six people - was discovered by a Royal Navy diving team during a routine survey of the river at around midnight.

Police threw a 200-metre exclusion area around the scene and the mouth of the Mersey was blocked by a Navy minehunter.

Navy bomb disposal experts were carying out a controlled explosion this afternoon.

Two incoming ferries, the Dublin Viking and the Mersey Viking, were unable to continue up the Mersey and other ships also prevented from entering the river.

Ferries travelling to and from Liverpool were expected to restart later this afternoon.

Patrick Garvey, 62, Birmingham, was waiting to travel to Belfast.

He said: "We've been waiting here since 6am, but we've been told it might be 10pm before we're away.

"Some people in the queue have been waiting since midnight and we don't know yet when the ferry will leave."

A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: "This is an absolutely massive bomb.

"It was identified as a World War Two-era German penetration bomb, which was normally used to attack submarine pens and fortified dock areas, such as Liverpool.

"This is far too dangerous a weapon to have just been left."

Coastguard Paul Harrison said: "Because of the strong currents in the Mersey, the diving team was forced to wait until today to carry out the explosion.

"We have been assisting the Navy to make sure ferries and ships are prevented from coming up the Mersey."

The bomb was found during Operation Rococo, a Royal Navy manoeuvre to survey the Mersey.

Minehunters HMS Walney and HMS Atherstone were scanning the seabed for obstacles when the bomb showed up on their sonar.

Both ships had been on public display at Albert Dock on Saturday.

Lieutenant Commander Richard Pethybridge, captain of HMS Atherstone, said: "Of all the mines planted on the seabed during World War Two, only 25% have ever been discovered.

"While the detonators may no longer work, the explosive charge is often still working."

Staff at ferry operator Norse Merchant ferries said the two ships had been due in at 5am and 6.30am but could now be delayed until 1pm.

A spokeswoman said: "The passengers are being kept fully informed and given complimentary food and drink while the situation is ongoing.

"The operation to move the bomb is a slow process so it will be frustrating for our passengers but their comfort is very important to us.

"As soon as we get the all clear we intend to get them to port, unload and hopefully sail out again with a full load at 5pm."

The Mersey Viking has 164 passengers and 55 crew on board. The Dublin Viking has 81 passengers and 46 crew.

Unity was on it at full height, as was 1 princes dock, Radio City tower looked about 1000ft tall and he must have drove past the paradise site 5 times, unless it is that big, nice to watch non the less, thanks James

LOL!

Was it the national news? Maybe they've been reading our posts on the media :dunno:

It's a darn good place for a proper hamburger in there. :eat:

They just mentioned on Hollyoaks that you can get a flight from Liverpool to Dublin for £75.... it's the missus who is watching it incidentally... :|

We complain when they ignore us, we complain when they visit!

This was obviously done to take the piss out of us, they must have been reading these boards. Don't they know that TV features in Liverpool have to be done with the Pier Head in the background? Far too weird a place for a feature for it not to be anything other than some kind of piss take.

3 second clip of chaos at JLA on tonight's C4 news as a result of the potential terrorist attack on a US bound plane. Most of the report was about Heathrow & M'cr. Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds & Birmingham airports also received the same amount of attention as JLA.

Missed that but at least it acknowledges that we have an airport and are not totally Ringway dependant.

Tony Benn will be exposing the way in which journalists/editors manage the news. Useful for Liverpudlians because it, hopefully, will lay bare how this process operates and how to counter it.

I have a lot of time for Tony Benn. It would have been good if C4 gave him the opportunity to organise news coverage for a series of say three presentations to see how things night look if the news focused on getting the story across rather than turning everything into a version of Westminster squabbling. Of the 4 people he interviewed I found to my surprise that I liked Paxman most - he seemed the least self righteous.

I was flicking digital channels tonight and `Hollyoaks: In the City` was on.

About 11.00pm Channel E4.

One of Hollyoaks naughty night time after the water shed scripts (ongoing.....)

The city (Liverpool) looked good with all the clubs and a few postcard shots, had a great time place spotting.

The story line was all the usual adult stuff plus drugs and a mugging and a few of the ex Brooksiders like `Tinhead` and his mate thrown in for good measure.

Worth catching if you get the chance.....I hesitate to say it was almost a normal saturday night in town but the usual stereo typical nonsense nevertheless but definately recognisable..... :scouserd:

On the BBC`s Television news at 6 O`clock tonight,

The opening item was `Immigration to the UK being enough to fill a City the size of Liverpool 427,000......

(which is incorrect as Liverpools population is higher.....but that`s nit picking.)

A Polish `Arriva` bus driver was featured who had moved to Liverpool,

New flats in Sefton Park where shown with site details in English and Polish, his wife was also interviewed and they were shown shopping in the new local Polish shop, there was also an interview regarding the impact to Liverpool being positive and it went on to show the `Metropolitan Cathedral` up from the new steps - which looked excellent and a Polish mass taking place in the cathedral crypt.

Generally very positive and well presented but it was dropped for the 10 O`clock news in favour of Slough and Leeds - even though the couple in Liverpool were still shown shopping but not mentioned as being in Liverpool.

ITV lead on the impact of immigration in Southampton and London.
Sky lead on the impact on Slough.

I saw that report too Pete, swear I had that bus driver on Saturday. I was getting the number 50 from Knowsley Road in Bootle to Waterloo and asked if he went straight down Liverpool Rd or up South Road, he replied.....Crosby, I just gave him my £1.40 and collected my ticket. Had to be him though.

Pie, I haven't seen any new flats around Sefton Park itself advertised in Polish. There are a few new properties in Smithdown Road, opposite the old Sefton General that are advertised in this manner. I suppose these flats are less than 1km from Sefton Park.

You just saw the flats and the signs to be honest `L8` so I had no way of telling the exact location but the Polish shop looked very swanky and of lots of `foody interest` :) and not your average `Spar` .....

No offence to `Spars` of course - I`ve been a regular.

You little name dropper you `Richie`, however it did show Liverpool in a good light don`t you think even if they were trying to show immigration as a problem, the couple they showed seemed very happy to have a new life in Liverpool and I wish them well.....and all of the others.

On BBC Breakfast this morning `Declan` who does the `Financial` reporting was covering a story on the new station that was opened for inspection to the press this morning Ebbsley(?) in Essex, it won`t actually come into use
until next year but is complete(?) and it is part of the new line that will serve the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Extension into St Pancras.....(Waterloo will meet its Waterloo.....)

The discussion covered wether or not the UK should be considering a £33bn extention to `The North` (The cost was disbuted) linking to Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow.....I`m quite sure I saw Declan touch his ear piece and he quicky reworded his comments, something like "and do you think that a high speed rail link to Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow and possibly Edinburgh will benefit the country....."

One bloke said `yes` we are so behind Europe with our transport infrastructure and it`s costing us money and we need to get to grips with the situation, another bloke said `no` the money would be better spent on `London Cross Rail`.....Grrrrrr!!!

What amused me was how often Declan managed to get the names `Liverpool,Manchester,Leeds and Glasgow` in that order into the news report..... :) :) :)

I could just imagine some one screaming down his ear piece "Mention Liverpool, mention Liverpool for goodness sake - we don`t want any more F*kn emails........"

 Progress.....
