Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia and the African Union, as well as its predecessor, the OAU. As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. The city has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages, and Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities. The city is located at 9.03° N 38.74° E. From its lowest point, around Bole International Airport, at 2,326 metres above sea level in the southern periphery, the city rises to over 3,000 metres in the Entoto Mountains to the north.

The site was chosen by Empress Taytu Betul and the city was founded in 1886 by her husband, Emperor Menelik II, and now has a population of around four million, and an eight per cent annual growth rate.

The city lies at the foot of Mount Entoto, and is home to Addis Ababa University. Addis Ababa University was formerly known as Haile Selassie I University, after the former Emperor of Ethiopia, who donated his Genete Leul Palace to be the University main campus in 1961.

I've been there, but The Country north of it, Eritrea has an even better looking skyline than this in it's capital, with the tallest building being a cathedral. It's looks kinda like Big Ben In London but dirtier.

Well it's kind of a skyline. Depending on how aware you are of the situation in
the country it's a miracle that anything ever got built. I mean, exept for
Addis Abeba there are no cities, so to speak, in the county. As a matter of
fact I'm going there the 14:th of January 2005 and will be stayng for two weeks.

For being the world's poorest country in terms of annual income per capita, Ethiopia's capital city seems to be very impressing based on these picturesa. Actual statistical and economic facts can make acountry appear worse than it is in reality. Addis has beauty and it seems more organized than many other developing countries that are richer and even booming. It also has a touristic flair. It has sense of beauty, I wonder what the HDP in this city is.

It looks like Ethiopia has drastically moved away from the stereotype of drought, famine and starving people with enlarged bellies. When did things start getting better? I've really only noticed because Ethiopian Airlines ordered Boeing 787's to improve their fleet.


As for the skyline I think height matters but as for the look of the city, it looks like a place I'd really love to visit.

Ethopia like most of Africa is growing quickly. Ethopia specificly has been growing at around 5-8% a year for many years now and since 2004 it has been growing over 10%. It's still one of the poorest countries in Africa though.

Not bad for a poor country. Id say this is even better (and looks cleaner) than some of the overrated and overpromoted cities in rural Southeast Asia. For one, it looks better (AND A HELL CLEANER) than Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. LOL. 5-6/10. Would wanna visit this place in the future.
