View Full Version : Gun Quarter
brum2003 July 29th, 2005, 12:10 PM The last 'quarter ' of the city looks like its about to get the makeover treatment...Crosby are submitting a design for a scheme called Honduras Wharf, designed by Glen Howells
this is the area click to view map (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=407000&Y=288000&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=GB&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=true&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=5000&down.x=189&down.y=7)
also several thousand student beds are being developed, off corporation street by Gosta Green and Aston Uni and further in on Lower Loveday Street....also several property speculators and housing companies are now buying land and sites !!!
I love this area, its like the Jewellery Quarter in scale, but very very run down with small scale industrial and many many interesting buildings, I hope they keep the character.
birminghamculture July 29th, 2005, 01:36 PM Cracking news - hopefully some decent size mid-rises might be included. (Especiallyt if Mr Howells has designed it and Crosby are building it)
:cheers1:
Nacho July 29th, 2005, 01:40 PM It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.
Richoftheb August 4th, 2005, 10:23 PM There's a site in the Gun Quarter already it has a crane up and they're clearing away an old building. Does anyone know whats going there? Its just round the corner from Lancaster Circus...
Smileyface August 4th, 2005, 10:54 PM Sounds like I'll have to have a butchers round the Gun Quarter with my camera next time in Brum
brum2003 August 5th, 2005, 11:56 AM student accomodation x
birminghamculture August 5th, 2005, 01:38 PM Highest building will be 12 storeys and will slope down in height towards St Chads - theres a pretty hefty document in Brum gov. website :cheers1:
woodhousen August 5th, 2005, 01:51 PM u got the http of the document, would love to see a render!
ROYAL BLUE August 5th, 2005, 08:16 PM Apparently my Great-Grandfather owned a Gun Shop on a site which is now the Post & Mail building. I had no idea! Also shows that the Gun quarter is smaller then it used to be thanks to the inner ring road
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 10:18 PM I had a quick mooch round the gun quarter and took a few pics, all i did really was use the subway under St Chads Queensway and then took a few pics walking down Loveday Street, Lower Loveday Street and then turned left onto Summer row before heading back to St Pauls Square to where my car was parked....click the link below for a map

birminghamculture August 7th, 2005, 10:25 PM The Gun Quarter could be quite amazing if done right. lets hope it is. Great pictures, anymore?
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 10:28 PM True it's got a lot of potential...it was the first time I'd ever walked round there so i suppose it is a forgotten part of the city centre....those are all my pics from that area but i've still got pics to post on other threads
birminghamculture August 7th, 2005, 10:35 PM Just imagine this area being developed into something which Manchester has where its surrounded by high-rises. Make the paths walkable, wang in some retail outlets and cafe's ect. The council really need to think about this development. Its got huge scope for a major reconstruction that can not only spread the city out more but bring in a part of Birmingham that has been neglected for years. A few skyscrapers along this canal corridor would be very welcomed, however I dont think it will be :(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/Robdann/Birmingham%204/GunQuarter3.jpg
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 10:38 PM You used the word 'wang' I don't think I've heard that since school, quality  it's definitely part of my vocabulary from now on. And yes I agree with everything you say BC
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 11:17 PM Might as well stick these on here as well even though they're not taken in the Gun quarter. These are all taken on Water Street which is the other side of Constitution Hill heading towards St Pauls Square, anyway I took these on the way back to my car.
We love our arches, this is looking up Water Street in the direction of the BT Tower and yes that is the ever lovely Brindley House you can see hiding behind its grime....actually the last picture in this set is of Brindley House and I claim the impossible...I've actually managed to get a flattering picture of it

birminghamculture August 8th, 2005, 01:38 AM :hahaha: Great pictures - this beauty is getting a face lift and is being turned into Luxury apartments, with an additional 60 homes on surrounding land, should clean up this area when finished.

Richoftheb November 9th, 2005, 10:07 PM Quite a lot going on site at the Student digs in lower loveday street. They now have two cranes. Found this press release (its a bit old)
BLUESTONE ACCOMMODATES THE BRAINS OF BIRMINGHAM
21/06/05
Construction company Bluestone is continuing to pioneer the development of innovative and economical student accommodation with a £16.3m instruction from Derwent Living to construct 609 student beds on Lower Loveday Street in Birmingham city centre.
The contract figure represents a 15 per cent reduction on the original tendered build-cost, after Bluestone changed the original build philosophy from steel framed to traditional load bearing masonry and incorporated modular bathroom pods into the design.
The pod system is a method that Bluestone has pioneered for some time, having installed them successfully in a series of student accommodation projects, including its recent scheme on in Buxton for Infrastructure Investments Limited. The off-site manufactured pods are simply dropped into place, allowing Bluestone to minimise construction time and maximise available living space. The method reflects the company’s commitment to driving new industry practices such as CLIP (Construction Lean Improvement Programme), where a ‘lean’ approach is achieved by balancing the use of people, resources and materials to reduce costs, eliminate waste and boost productivity.
Bluestone has established itself as one of the UK’s leading contractors in student accommodation, with its Peter Street scheme in Nottingham taking its total of student beds to 1,600 in the city alone. The scheme is particularly interesting for UNITE as it takes offsite manufacture to the next stage by incorporating fully fitted modular bedrooms and staircases. In addition to the new contract in Birmingham, Bluestone is also currently on site in Buxton.
John Homer, regional managing director for Bluestone comments: “Bluestone is playing a pivotal role in the development of student accommodation in the Midlands and the schemes have proved extremely popular with occupiers and universities alike.
“The overwhelming success of the developments so far is a real testament to the company’s ability to work with its partners to deliver deadlines and provide schemes which offer the highest quality and most economical accommodation on the market.”

Biosonic April 26th, 2006, 04:15 PM That's good - we like that one :)
MJH April 26th, 2006, 04:35 PM To be honest I though this scheme had been bought by crosby and was Honduras Wharf, but clwarly its not, so where the heck is Honduras Wharf?
Engels April 26th, 2006, 06:43 PM Presumably Honduras Wharf backs onto a canal somewhere?
Nacho April 26th, 2006, 09:03 PM I don't recall seeing that building before.Very nice.
Spread April 26th, 2006, 09:25 PM Honduras Wharf is the site adjacent to City Heights by Crosby which was knocked back at planning. I think the Crosby site is part of a larger proposal highlighted in the Gun Quarter plan as a mini Brindley Place type scheme
On an unrelated note has anyone been past the new student accommodation being built in the gun quarter, you can only just glimpse it from the ringroad but it looks quite finished. Perhaps someone could get a photo?

Yes Bio i thought that and actually took a shot of it but it's no better than that shot.
I spent a few hours wandering around The Gun Quarter yesterday, what little there is of it anyway. I had forgotten that i worked down there years ago, so a few memories were stirred up and it ain't changed all that much over the years. I got a lot of shots of the peripheries which i will post later, meanwhile here's what i got of the main bits.

Another shot of the Honduras Wharf site. I went back today and got some much better shots but then left my camera in my brothers car ... doh !. I'll post them tomorrow.

This is such a terrific building, and quite possibly one of my favourites in the city (and I never even knew it was there!).
And the good news is that it will become student acommodation as follows:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a264/Biosonic/MolandStStudent.jpg
If I remember rightly, there are some building very similar to the Back-to-Backs (Inge St) right next to that Bull Pub. Looks a nice pub too :)
CH - you've really excelled yourself matey - thank you very much
Seriously - have you though about compiling your photos into a book "Quarters of Birmingam" or something?
The reason this area has been left so long is because it is cut off from teh city by Gt Charles St Queensway. I think for that reason I would be happy to see the flyover at Aston Uni come down - allow it to reconnect to the rest of the city centre.
Oh, and the fact that Newtown is just down the road doesn't help either...

If you go in the pub there is a peal board from a peal by some handbell ringers if memory serves me right. It had, and I hope it still does, a close link to St Chads Cathedral where the ringers would often go after ringing on a sunday morning for a pint before going to ring at St Phillips again.

woodhousen February 18th, 2007, 08:29 PM lol well an interesting design!
pauliewalnuts February 18th, 2007, 08:35 PM I really like the Gun Quarter, I used to work on Spencer St in the JQ, which is pretty much on the GQ / JQ boundary and would often walk down there.
There seem to be an amazing number of lovely old buildings, absolutely dripping with character, which are currently either unused or occupied by ropey looking shops / car stereo warehouses.
Surely with the new public square in front of St Chad's improving access to the rest of the city, and with that huge office project at Snow Hill, this area must be absolutely primed to undergo some serious regeneration.
Also, the quality of some of the buildings there easily match some of the buildings we hear about being regenerated in Leeds and Mcr. I really do think this whole area could be a hidden gem.
morestoreysplease February 20th, 2007, 12:23 AM And the canal between the Hub and St Chads surely should receive lots of attention, plus the best street into town (Gt Hampton St / Const Hill) should get all the tired bldgs make-overs.

Slightly delayed response but no, I'm afraid not. He was fishing
blackcountryboy March 4th, 2008, 01:38 PM Nice pics CityGent, I live in the student development on photo 7. It's a really good place to live if you like construction, I have a pretty decent view of Snow Hill and Kennedy Tower from my kitchen but Im too poor to afford a camera. I really hope this part of the city gets ear-marked for regeneration because it could become a very nice place. The Big City plan mentions a city-centre for families, I think the area would be great for an 'urban village' scheme. (as long as they manage to get rid of all the tramps and junkies!)
Nacho March 4th, 2008, 01:48 PM BBB , how many people live in the development ? Is it a decent place to live ?
blackcountryboy March 4th, 2008, 01:56 PM Im not sure, theres 4 stairwells that serve the building, 5 floors on every stairwell and 4 flats on each floor. 1 flat = 6 residents, can you do the maths please! Im too lazy!! Its very nice on paper, we have a gym, dont pay any bills, broadband internet, sky tv, all bedrooms are ensuite. Having said that, it does get incredibly noisey at night when people are having parties and going out etc. and the area isnt the nicest really, lots of drunks and homeless people. But generally its pretty good! Much less hassle than living in an apartment and its literally 2/3 mins walk to Colmore Row, so I'd say its a pretty good choice!
blackcountryboy March 4th, 2008, 02:01 PM I've just done an estimate and I think its roughly 480 people in my building. But there is another building that is part of the development which is slightly smaller. So id say that there must be around 800 people living here.
Nacho March 4th, 2008, 02:03 PM A lot of people .Glad you are enjoying it !
jrb September 14th, 2008, 06:41 PM I'm sure you probably know about this proposal, but if you don't, it's a 21 story student tower planned for the Gun Quarter. Article and render below.
