View Full Version : Things to do in Tel Aviv(dov it's for you)
ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 02:44 AM Please don't miss this place while you're in Israel. So old, so beautiful, so peaceful. I think that Old Jaffa is the only place in Israel where Palestine-Israeli conflict doesn't exist!! Yes, here Arabs and Jews live in peace, and quite enjoy it. There are a lot of good restaurants, most beautiful views on Tel Aviv, and a lot of historical attractions. And of course the famous Jaffa port. Don't be afraid walking through the narrow streets of old Jaffa, just please keep quiet, people still live there!

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 02:45 AM Old Jaffa: The Clock Tower
If you'll arrive to Old Jaffa you won't miss it, its just at the entry to Jaffa from Tel Aviv Direction (Northern Entrance). The clock tower was erected in the plaza between the "saraya" palace and the "kishleh" prison, next to the Great Mosque, the Mosque of Mahmudiyyeh. The cornerstone was laid on 1.9.1900, on the occasion of the 25th year of the Sultan's rule. Two stories were completed by 1901, and the tower was dedicated in late 1903-early 1904.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 02:47 AM Old Jaffa: Old Jaffa: Oldest port
Wander round the old town of Jaffa - the oldest port in the world still in constant use. A lovely Arab old town that was renovated in the 1960s, perched on a rocky prominitory above the Mediterranean. Steep and stepped alleys lead from the main square to the port below. A bevy of galleries, museums, places of worship (Muslim, Christian, Jewish), antique shops and (not very good) cafes abound in the restored, bouganvillea shrouded streets with occasional glimpses of the sea. And the port itself,w hile not so busy asit once was, remains a working port. So no fancy marina here with fancy restaurants. A couple of long-established fish restaurants and a small craft market on Saturdays is what you'll find (sadly the best restaurant closed down). See the travelogue for more images

One thing is sure, impossible to be in Tel Aviv and miss its great beaches. where ever you'll stay in TA it will be close to the beach .... so no chance of missing it. You have many Cafe's and Bars on the beach's that are open both day and night time. some of the beaches has music and some are more relaxed. One thing is sure walking on the beach or even just sitting in the afternoon / evening time is a great thing.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 02:51 AM For many tourists (and a fair few locals) Tel Aviv begins at the shore of the Mediterranean and ends about 100 metres inland. The beach is the centre of activity from the early morning joggers to the late night parties. In between, thousands of people sunbathe, swim and just generally have a good time. The beach is one long continuous stretch across the length of the city, but if you're there a while you'll soon work out which areas are most popular with young people, families and so on. Along parts of the main road it's a bit like walking through LA - palm trees, teeny-weeny bikinis and lots of glamorous bronzed people everywhere. Like me for instance! For more pix of Tel Aviv beach, have a look at my travelogue

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 02:55 AM Tel Aviv Beaches: Playing drums and dancing on the Drums Beach!
Every Friday afternoon, people get together here to play drums, to dance and to enjoy. You can see many different types of drums and hear many different rhythms, my favourite one is of course darbuka! The main idea is to play altogether, to improvise and find a rhythm altogether. You will see many people who enjoy playing drums, dancing, enjoying their drinks and watching, families having fun with their children and tourists taking pictures of this.

This is a large square in Tel-Aviv, it is by the city hall, nice place to take a break in the warm spring sunshine. Nachlat Benjamin: Nachlat Benjamin Arts and Crafts Fair
went on another visit to the crafts fair on Nachlat Benjamin, which takes place every Tuesday and Friday. My boyfriend and I were looking for gifts to take to friends and family in the USA. I like to take things which have something Israeli. For example we found a very nice picture frame and on top of it going its width is a picture of Jerusalem walls. Also we took one of the bottles as shown in the picture. As you may notice, they are clocks. It is a bottle from the Israeli beer company Gold Star. We bought it at the stall of Bobbie Dagen.
Directions: Opposite major intersection of King George and Sheinkin with Allenby Street. Adjacent to Carmel Market. Buses 24, 25

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:06 AM Azrieli center:
When they started buiding the Azrieli Center, in 1996, many of us thought that it's gonna be an ugly construction which will spoil the image of the city, being too high. Today we have higher buildings and Azrieli is the most popular one so far. It consist of two towers triangular and circular ones. The third one, square shaped, will be added soon. Azrieli Center has a huge shoping mall with many shops, restaurants and a movie theater. Many offices and conference rooms are found there as well. But the biggest attraction of the Center is the Israel's tallest observation deck from which you get a beautiful view on Tel Aviv and its surroundings.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:18 AM Park Yarkon:
The sea is very nice to look at, what with the waves and the sound of the waves breaking, but the river is very beautiful too. Today it's a lovely day, not boiling hot as it has been most days recently, and as I live two minutes from the river I went for a walk along the river banks. Lots of people were picnicking, kids were on swings or older kids busy painting various molds of animals etc., kids were sliding down a large plastic slide or watching the animals inside a large pen - ducks, ostriches, deer, rabbits, etc. or people were just resting on the grass. These are just a few of the activities found here. The entrance to this part of the river is from the northern entrance of Tel Aviv, by the Yarkon Bridge (see photo). From here you can reach Sportek where many sports are played.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:22 AM Florentin
Florentin is a neighborhood in Tel Aviv that was built in 1927 by a family from greece. You can find here a lot of small businesses and alot of young people that came here because of the low rent but also a lot of foreign workers. To my opinion this is an ugly neighborhood but still , very unique.
ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:23 AM The New Israeli Opera hosts an annual season of operatic performances at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Centre. The season runs from October to July and normally features at least eight productions. New Israeli Opera was founded in 1985 with a production of Dido and Aeneas, accompanied by the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Its forebears can be traced back to January 1922, when the Hebrew Opera in Eretz performed pieces by Anton Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky, accompanied by piano. Gounod's Faust was fully staged shortly after, though still only accompanied by piano. On 28 July 1923 the famous conductor Mordechai Golinkin conducted the new Palestine Opera in Verdi's La Traviata. With no opera houses available, the performances were given in Tel Aviv's Eden Cinema, Jerusalem's Zion Hall and Haifa's Coliseum Cinema and, unfortunately, the economic constraints of the times were such that the company did not last long. Later the Palestine Folk Opera produced some 17 operas in the 1940s and then, eventually, in 1948, the Israeli National Opera was formed. Accompanied by the symphony orchestra of the Tel Aviv Workers Council, the first production was of Massenet's Thaïs on 15 April. Notable for its introduction of overseas artists - including, for nigh on three years between 1962 and 1965, Placido Domingo - the company unfortunately had to close in 1982. The main highlight since the New Israeli Opera company was formed was the move to its permanent home in the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Centre in 1994. The New Israel Opera website has all the information needed to plan a visit.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:25 AM Lutheran Church
visited here with a group and guide and just loved the area around - old, old houses. Although the Templars, who came here in 1886, did not believe in having churches, the German settlers eventually did build one. The vestry, known as Church House, is at 9 Rehov Auerbach. Built at the beginning of the century it still has the handsome original staircase inside. The church itself, also known as Immanuel Church, has undergone considerable renovation inside, but it is interesting to note the inscriptions in Hebrew and the large organ, said to be one of the best in the region. Whilst there the very nice pastor, from Norway, played the organ for us. The photo was taken at night.

When I showed this photo, which is of The Performing Arts Theatre in Te Aviv, to my daughter, at first glance she thought it was the real thing. There are also about 50,000 plants, of which 20,000 are miniature trees consisting of 50 different species. These were grown especially for the park. My friends and I went about 5pm and after walking around for a couple of hours, had something to eat in the restaurant (there is also a coffee shop), and waited until it was dark to see the park lit up. This is a great place for visitors from abroad. If I can work out where to put my other photos, I shall do so as I have really nice ones of places like the Bahai Temple in Haifa and The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:31 AM RESTAURANTS
ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:32 AM First I would describe this chain of reaturants as a diner, although they serve only dairy dishes you can find pretty much everything there. But their speciality is fruit shakes. Mmmmmmm delicious! The Yotvata restaurant was named after a kibbutz "Yotvata" which is located on the South of Israel about 25 miles from Eilat. This kibbutz is known for it's dairy products since about the 1960. Yotvata restaurants can be found almost in every city in Israel, but the one in Tel Aviv is the busiest one. While you walk on the Tel Aviv's promenade ("Tayelet') grab a fruit shake or spend an hour on dinner, you won't be disappointed! It is open 7:30am-4am daily.
Fruit shakes are the best, but their salads and onion soup are very good as well.

ZOHAR July 31st, 2005, 03:33 AM Abu el Afiya: The most famous place in Tel Aviv-Jaffa
First I'll have to tell you a story, which I heard from a friend of mine. A tourist from Germany, who was visiting Israel, told my friend that she was shocked that we, Israelis, eat dinner at 11pm. My reaction to this story was: "She should have gone to Abouelafia at 4 am" ;-) No, it's not a custom in Israel to eat dinner at 11pm or 4 am, but sometimes we have good reasons to do so. Abouelafia is the most famous bakery in Tel Aviv, if not in the whole country. It is open 24 hours a day and it is a very busy place. Since Tel Aviv is known as the city that never sleeps, we do party a lot. Once we're done partying, in most of the cases, Abouelafia is a must. I guess for many of us it became tradition. And it tastes sooooooooo good!
