KAMLOOPS – Strong winds during the night caused a fire six kilometres south of Spences Bridge to grow to 1000 hectares. The fire is burning up the mountain in steep, inaccessible terrain.

Currently, there are 56 BC Forest Service personnel working on the fire. Due to the steep, very rugged terrain, access is limited. Two rappel crews are working to create safe access to the fire. Four helicopters are on site to provide support to ground crews. A fire management team has been requested and will be arriving on site this afternoon.

The B.C. Forest Service is monitoring the situation closely and will advise the public if there are any significant changes. The Kamloops Fire Centre is currently in a high danger rating. The public is reminded to continue to use caution during the long weekend and to report any smoke or flames to 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular phones.

KAMLOOPS – Crews are continuing to action a fire six kilometres south of Spences Bridge. High winds yesterday caused this fire to grow to its current size of 2214 hectares.
Currently, there are 88 BC Forest Service personnel working on the fireline. Of that, there are two rappel crews that are continuing to work on creating safe access to the fire as it is burning in very steep, rugged terrain with very difficult access. Eight helicopters will be working the fire today.

The fire is burning in a remote location and is not threatening any structures. A fire management team is on site, and a full fire camp will be up and running at the Lytton airport.

FIRE SEASON HEATS UP
8/6/05 11:01:00 AM
KAMLOOPS – Fire activity has steadily increased since the August long weekend, with the majority of the Kamloops Fire Centre currently in high fire danger. The Kamloops Fire Centre has responded to 22 wildfires in the past week, 21 of which have been person-caused. Every person-caused wildfire is preventable.
With the weather expected to remain hot and dry for the next 10 days, the BC Forest Service would like to remind the public to exercise caution this weekend. When enjoying forested areas, please be careful with campfires by making sure the fire is always attended and properly extinguished before leaving. Fire wardens will be conducting patrols throughout the weekend.

The only fires allowed in the Kamloops Fire Centre at this time are campfires for warmth and food preparation. Backyard burning and industrial pile burning have been banned since May 30, 2005.

The Forest Service appreciates the public’s assistance in reporting and detecting wildfires. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks. For more information on bans and restrictions, visit our Web site at www.for.gov.bc.ca/protect.

No surprise. Sounds like a bad idea to live in those valleys around the Kamloops region.
