Readers name Sydney and Bali the world's top city and island once again this year—for the eighth and fourth time, respectively. Several destinations have their best World's Best performance ever, including Prague; Chiang Mai, Thailand; Hobart, Tasmania; and Easter Island, Chile. And kudos to our sole first-time winner: Harbour Island, in the Bahamas.

Wallbanger August 2nd, 2005, 01:03 AM Aww San Diego is not on there:(;) But I think that list is pretty accurate, I have been to
San Francisco, CA
Vancouver, BC
Santa Fe, NM
Victoria, BC
and New Orleans, LA
Jules August 2nd, 2005, 01:13 AM Santa Fe!? :?
Wallbanger August 2nd, 2005, 01:37 AM Yes.. Santa Fe is the largest city in a state called New Mexico.
Ring any bells?
lol jk;)
612bv3 August 2nd, 2005, 02:07 AM Interesting, San Francisco is #10 overall.
Chris121091 August 2nd, 2005, 03:14 AM Again, how were they ranked?
PotatoGuy August 2nd, 2005, 03:44 AM Santa Fe!? :?
thats wat im thinkin, why wud u wanna go there? theres so many other places in the US
Wallbanger August 5th, 2005, 08:18 AM Yes but obviously they know that theyre talking about.
ASupertall4SD August 5th, 2005, 10:14 AM i think the list is BS. places id like to visit?
ill give San Fran, Vancouver, Chicago, New York my approval. But the rest are silly IMO. When i think of "best city", i think of a place that would both want to be lived in, and would draw tourism. I would want to go to New Orleans for one week, and one week only. Other than that, I would avoid it like the plague. It is bar none, the dirtiest, grosest cities i have ever seen. It literally smells like the bathroom after the evening has finished at your local dive bar in Hollywood. Disgusting. Charleston, while you cannot complain with the beauty and perhaps the wanting to live there, name me 5 things you can do there as a tourist. cant name em. Would i want to live in a place in which i cant thing of anything to do. Montreal and the rest, same crap.
I believe Los Angeles, and more to the point San Diego need to be on that list. You cannot argue with the appeal for tourists those two cities have and by the masses, the attraction for wanting to live there. the attractions, and actual things to do in those cities. this list is partly a joke.
bay_area August 5th, 2005, 05:52 PM If Im not mistaken, this list is determined by the actual votes of thousands of Travel & Leisure's readers and not by their staff.
samsonyuen August 5th, 2005, 09:40 PM Not really agreeing with it, but everyone's entitled to their opinion.
milehi August 5th, 2005, 11:00 PM Santa Fe is not the largest city in NM you ding dong! That would be Albuqurque!
WesternGulf August 6th, 2005, 12:40 AM Actually this is one of the more impressive and more realistic list I have seen in awhile. All cities have pretty nice and unique things to offer that you cannot find in any city USA or Canada for that matter.
mic of Orion August 6th, 2005, 12:44 AM what happened to LA, I thought LA would be popular?
I agree with the list, but I always thought LA would be popular place...
canada cowboy August 6th, 2005, 12:48 AM i think the list is BS. places id like to visit?
...Montreal and the rest, same crap.
You obviously don't get out much.
Montreal definitely. I'm surprised at Quebec City - though nice, surprised to see it on the list. San Fran is definitely near the top...as is Van. I'd replace Chicago with TO though. Also, surprising Miami isn't on there.
There are a lot of great cities to visit though in NA...tough to pick a "top ten".
Azn_chi_boi August 6th, 2005, 02:44 AM I'd replace Chicago with TO though.
You will do no such thing! ;)
Anyways... Miami beach should be on there, not Miami but Miami BEACH!!!
IS there a big more to the list, or is the list only up to the top 10?
I say dump Charleston.
Change Chicago with Santa Fe.
Qubec City had a really steep drop!!!!
Dampyre August 6th, 2005, 07:11 PM I'd replace Chicago with TO though.
Toronto isn't on the list for a reason.
MSPSCO3113 August 6th, 2005, 09:38 PM chicagogeorge, i have a question. If Chicago had not made the list would you have started this thread?
Anyway Seattle WA or Portland OR should be on there.
teshadoh August 7th, 2005, 07:52 PM Oh no - LISTS!!!!
I don't see a problem with this list - all these cities have huge tourist draws & are very much accepting of tourists.
As for those who don't understand why Sante Fe is on the list, ask your parents or grandparents. These surveyors generally don't ask high schoolers or other people with no money... ;)
Otherwise, San Diego, Miami Beach, Key West & Washington would have fit well in that list as well.

you are kidding right? Your arguement is for Tourism as a basis for the list. You seriously are going to say Santa Fe New Mexico draws more tourism than San Diego and Miami Beach. Not a chance.
teshadoh August 7th, 2005, 11:05 PM I don't know if it does nor do I care - I doubt raw numbers plays a role. It's just a fucking survey - don't take lists so seriously.
CF August 7th, 2005, 11:12 PM Fairly accurate list. As a person that's lived in both cities, I would put Vancouver ahead of Chicago.
Rockefeller August 7th, 2005, 11:16 PM Toronto isn't on the list for a reason.
And that reason is only known to you.
_sick_driver_ August 7th, 2005, 11:30 PM Toronto isn't on the list for a reason.
hm yea.. wat is that reason? :sly:
CF August 8th, 2005, 03:22 AM hm yea.. wat is that reason? :sly:Because Toronto isn't one of the top 10 cities in NA? I don't know what kind of answer you're looking for.
_sick_driver_ August 8th, 2005, 01:47 PM ^^yea, um futile post... i was asking Dampyre to answer the question.
teshadoh August 8th, 2005, 01:58 PM City boosterism is a tiresome sport. Yet city defensiveness is as well - but this isn't a list Toronto citizens should really care to be on, it's not a bad thing for a city to be 'touristy'. ;)
dave8721 August 8th, 2005, 04:02 PM The results of most surveys lead one to the obvious conclusion voiced so elequently by Homer Simpson (in the episode where they try to deport Apu) "When will people understand...Democracy doesn't work!!!" :hahaha:
Dampyre August 9th, 2005, 08:47 PM hm yea.. wat is that reason? :sly:
It's because the people polled in this survey didn't vote for it. Pretty simple.
ExYankee August 13th, 2005, 04:18 PM I don't know if it does nor do I care - I doubt raw numbers plays a role. It's just a fucking survey - don't take lists so seriously.
LMAO! :righton:
Shampion August 19th, 2005, 12:44 PM Best cities? New York and Chicago vie for second place. While first place goes to Phoenix
Sean in New Orleans August 20th, 2005, 06:43 AM It does make me proud that New Orleans always makes these lists. We have our issues, but, we are a pretty damn cool, unique city, if I must say...I love it here.

I could go along witht aht list. I don't know if this list is supposed to reflect travel or living or what but I think its pretty good. I could put San Fran and Chicago as a shared number two but I don't have a problem being just a tad behind because San Fran is a great city.
Don't know how Santa Fe is #3. A nice town and all but number #3? Don't know about that one.
I would say
1. New York
2. Chicago
3. San Fran
4. Vancouver
5. Montreal
6. Boston
7. Charleston
8. Seattle
9. Las Vegas
10. Toronto

You want to tell me why you would put Toronto over Chicago? Both are pretty comperable in a lot of ways but I can't see what would make someone want to travel to Toronto more then Chicago.
wheelingman August 26th, 2005, 06:37 AM My favorite cities are
1. Chicago
2. Philadelphia
3. Montreal
TEAMSpirit August 30th, 2005, 02:32 PM well, from my perspective, I think New York City is a great city - TONS of energy, TONS of creativity - you only have to look at the city's grafitti to realise how much raw energy the city exudes:
here is a site that has free pics of the city's grafitti (and a cool site overall I think)

and if you happen to be interested in my thoughts... here is my blog separate and distinct... comments please

Completely agree!
