Decided today in Helsinki.

The cup most likely to be held on Sept. 16-17 2006 at the Olympic stadium.

So in 13 months from now, Athens will have the chance to host yet another world class event.

Good news !

Also, Thessaloniki was chosen to host the European Championships in Athletics for 2006 as well!

Great news for Hellas!

Really?

I would have thought that Kaftanzoglio at just 28,000 seats is much to small to host a European Championship. Any plans to add more seats to the stadium before the European Championships?

I am sure Thessaloniki will host a great games though. It is great for Greek cities outside of Athens to get some exposure, expecially an amazing city like Thessaloniki.

Finally, the legacy of ATHENS 2004 is materialising in the trust of the sports community to Greece for hosting world class events.

Not only does this keep Greece in the world's sports spotlight, but proves that Athens 2004 was not a one-off.

Considering the size of Greece, this is quite an achievement.

They all sound extremely happy and upbeat for the future :

N.B - this is the European Cup not the European championships - I myself am quite confused as there seem to be so many different meetings/events.

I'm very happy that we will be hosting a major event yet again!!! I'm visiting the U.S. right now and I can't tell you how many people have congratulated us on our Olympics! They were really impressed!

The GREAT NEWS for our country keeps pouring in ....The legacy of the Athens dream games !

5 Aug 2005 - IOC official website news

At their traditional meeting held every two years on the eve of the Athletics World Championships, the IOC Executive Board and the IAAF Council discussed today in Helsinki a series of items of common interest.

The two bodies reflected on the success of the Athens Games, a success that was witnessed at all levels through faultless organisation, high-quality venues for the athletes and unprecedented television coverage.

Ancient Olympia Reopens Gates
05 Aug 2005 15:58:00

After last year’s rebirth of shot put in Ancient Olympia, the sacred land that hosted the first Olympics in 776 BC will reopen its gates. Today it was decided that one track and field event should take place in Ancient Olympia annually. This was announced by the President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, from Helsinki, which is getting prepared for the start of the World Track and Field Championships. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) spokesperson Nick Davis stated that the first event will take place in May 2006, and that the games will possibly be shot put, discus and hammer throw.

Super, so they'll get used for two days for the next decade.

What a debacle. Can't we waste our money on something more productive....like schools...

Can't we waste our money on something more productive....like schools...

Very constructive remark.
you also forgot to mention hospitals ! (what else is USUALLY part of this rhetorics ?).
The overwhelming majority of the Greeks and the people of Athens were backing (passionately) the return of the games back in 1997 AND also before and after the actual games. The post olympic management of the venues (poorly designed (and executed : see delays) by the previous government and currently in an ongoing process (this government will also be judged on the final outcome) is the issue of the matter NOW. Not the schools or the hospitals that could have - should have - would have been built.
Remember Athens infrastucture BEFORE the Olympics.
This thread is about athletic events pouring in Greece. Shall we just abolish them altogether, to save money ?

PS - So I take it you were one of the 60,000 volunteers, huh ?

Guys, I hope you already know that this has nothing to do with what happens now in Helsinki or what happened in Athens in 1997. It is in a much much smaller scale. The selected athletes from each continent will crate a team for that continent and will compete with other continents, with the USA team and with the host team. Still big names, but not the real thing.

I just wish that it will be marketed well and that peolple will visit the stadium!

You are totally right on this one and it has already been pointed out. IT is the world cup we are talking about, not the world championships - That Athens hosted with great success in 97 (WITH an unforgettable opening by VANGELIS- quite unprecedent for a world championships) and played a major role in IOC awarding 2004 to Athens (Helsinki 2005 on the other hand opted for a...Helena Paparizou opening !).
As for attendance - just a flashback : Remember day 1 ....and day 2 after Primo Nebiolo's vicious comments. We might need another Nebiolo to shake things up !

Yes, I did forget to mention hospitals. I also forgot to mention defense, money for our libraries, and everything and anything that Greece is lacking. I also forgot to mention all the unemployed GREEKS that the government doesn't give a dime about. But to host some stupid world championships? We are first in line.

We are a third world nation masquerading as the leading light of world athletics.

Let me ask you, is Argentina hosting any world championships? You ask why did I ask this? Because Argentina is presently in a better economic situation than Greece is. The only reason Greece hasn't floated away into oblivion is because of the EU. We produce nothing, we have no culture left to speak of (Dalaras is not culture), and we bend to the will of any political sponsor that comes by.

As for infrastructure...SUPER!!! Fantastic. Now all 50,000 people who use the Tram will be doing well. But not at the price/cost/mismanagement that they all came about.

As for me volunteering at the Olympics...of course I wasn't...I was working and studying.

I would be grateful is KOnstantinoupolis can create a split and transfer this to the General Discussion thread where we can take it from there (and go on indefinitely).

I do not agree with your rather flatening, all or nothing, absolute approach. I too have done my fair amount of criticism.
Argentina was bidding for the 2004 Olympics remember ? And then she suffered an unprecedent economic collapse. SO, whom shall we compare to, next ? CUBA ?
As for culture - you will NOT find it UNLESS you seek for it. Ask the thousands upon thousands of artists who display greater ressiliance than yourself, who participate in Biennales, count the number of theatres in Athens, look at the Parthenon restoration project, Patra will be the cultural capital of Europe, the production of books if unprecedent ...OF COURSE we are lagging behind in many areas, and we lack resources and funding. BUT being absent from the athletics scene - or whatever exactly you are suggesting - is not the answer to all our problems. And finally, if you are not satisfied with the politicians, feel grateful that you are living in a democracy and next time you can vote for someone else (or is Argentina your ideal model of "lack of corruption" ?).

"Democracy"? Hahah. You call what Greece has a democracy? I see it is an oligarchy AT BEST. The nepotism that runs through our country's politics is disgusting. The fact that you refer to the modern "artists," who for the most part produce bullshit, and then sit there and admire themselves.

And Argentina isn't an IDEAL. I'm just pointing out the fact that they are actually fighting for their country against the creditors. We? Thessaloniki could be overrun and we wouldn't lift a finger with how we are going.

I'm sure you refer to Kazantzakis as an "auteur" as well correct? The man who sleeps with women in CHURCHES, and has the AUDACITY to write about it. IF that's "culture" I want no part of it. In other words, I don't have to go down to the sewers to know it smells like shit.
