View Full Version : Kite Tower
ps60 August 2nd, 2005, 08:46 PM Kite Tower
On the site of the Leeds International Pool this 40 (or 28) storey tower will consist of 6 tall triangular facades that alternately point up or down. The facades which are only 50% glazed to control heat gain, interlock to create trianglular floor plates at the top and bottom of the tower and hexagonal floor plates in the middle.
This striking design is a collaboration between Carey Jones architects and Urban Splash. It will feature a hotel and offices. The building will also have wind turbines to provide it with electricity.

skyfitsboy November 3rd, 2005, 07:11 PM Realy hope this gets built, its such an amazing looking building, worth a visit to Leeds in its own right!

(looking kinda of like a borg production from Star Trek!)

(At night it has like a stealth like auru about it, very mysterious)
jimbo November 3rd, 2005, 11:03 PM its bloody awesome - that's all I can manage at this juncture. As di Livio said on the official Leeds thread, we're now getting a (predicably) shitty brick Barrett affair. The swimming pool site shouldn't be residential - completely wrong use in my view. Who wants to live overlooking the Inner Ring Road I ask?
Unless we're completely wrong and the Barratt development IS the Spiracle Tower?!?!?!?!?!? So that wouldn't be so bad, although the Kite Tower nudges it for me.
Its not the river on the renders then. Whoops, got that totally wrong then!
di Livio November 4th, 2005, 03:34 PM ..
di Livio November 4th, 2005, 03:35 PM worth a visit to Leeds in its own right!
A telling comment.
I've always thought Leeds should be a sort of gallery of the best modern architecture.

What a view that render is, the perspective makes it look like the building is so tall its corners have met on the horizon
Monsoon April 29th, 2006, 06:01 PM Can’t wait for this to get built!
The Lumiere exhibition showed this building on their map, although the simple render showed looked like a circular tower, in fact a lot more like Spiracle Tower, which from the renders of this and the kite tower looks to be the same piece of land.
onix April 29th, 2006, 06:15 PM ..
Alexi Lalas April 29th, 2006, 06:40 PM kite tower was merely a vision, though the developers have said if i remember correctly that they would like to build it somewhere in leeds, if not elsewhere in the country. the spiricle tower is far more likely to happen, i think they are waiting on the construction of the new international pool to finish at the south leeds stadium first though
Alexi Lalas April 29th, 2006, 06:42 PM oh yeah sorry, you're right about kite and spiricle having the same site. it's at the international pool

Why only Leeds?

CharlieP April 29th, 2006, 09:09 PM It slightly reminds me of the Coriolis space stations from Elite:

Bachy Soletanche April 29th, 2006, 10:14 PM I've just got this horrible feeling of trying to post myself into that building as it spins around!

That Sprical looks cool too!

I noticed their little error too :)

Was that a Commodore64 game?
Those bloody cassettes took an age to load.

BBC game first, then C64 then everything else.
Oh, and MAKE's design of the Birmingham Coach Station looks like a landed Cobra Mark III, hmm wonder if Mr. Shuttleworth was a fan?
nick_taylor May 25th, 2006, 05:41 PM So any news on this then?
LeedsLad May 25th, 2006, 09:56 PM Last I heard they were awaiting a suitable site for it (the original proposed site of the LIP has another scheme planned).
andyb56 April 13th, 2007, 10:33 PM What ever happened to this idea, it was different. I think Leeds needs to have a building like this. Last week I picked up a copy of Wired Magazine and they were showing a building, which is a proposed 20 storey tall building in Rotterdam, In the Netherlands, which is one of my favourite modern cities in Europe, especially for skyscrapers. Anyway link to the story is below.

To see the picture of the building you need to open the link on the thumbnail of stories images to the left of main article.

Come again?
I was leafing through the Leeds Uni produced book Around Leeds last night. Two images of Lumiere and Criterion Place seemed to have come from another world. Leeds got none of the daring architecture it was promised in the noughties, and ended up with Opal 3 and Unite tower dominating the skyline. I think these abysmal buildings have downgraded the city rather than enhanced it,.

Indeed it's sad. Especially considering both sit on high land and so they stick out on the skyline. Hopefully in 30 years or so they'll be demolished, I can't see them living up to the test of time.
As for Kite Tower (we're on the thread, might as well talk about it!), it was always a strange one. I imagined it as being the biggest marmite tower of Leeds, dividing opinion for years.
Aaronj09 August 16th, 2011, 06:08 PM Opal is a monster, but Sky Plaza could be a really good building given the right cladding, it's sleek and tall, so maybe in a few years time, it will be recladded. There's no hope for Opal though, it's far too chunky.
As for the Kite Tower, I really dislike it. ;)

You want to go through the lights - not this set, the second set. Then you'll see a McDonalds on your left... and you turn right just after that. Got it?
