one of the opal phase 2 cranes are coming down as I type. Did you mention the WY playhouse crane?

It's becuse it's a luffing jib type, so the tower part has to be higher than the building, but then the jib goes up from there to make a really tall crane.


Why would a contractor choose this type of crane as opposed to the more standard models? My only guess is that these ones don't overhang adjacent sites - although there's not much to 'crash into' around here.

well done rob, I reckon we might beat our record of 21 later this year with those you've just mentioned. Also the commercial / resi HUV scheme behind Manor Mills has broken ground (Dandara or Deltalord, I forget which), and Greenbank could conceivably have cranes up by the end of the year. Bonza!

We went through central Bradford on Saturday, the GateHaus seems to have suddenly shot up to full height, and I have to say looks brilliant. it really suits the area it's in, it kind of looms out at you as you come past the solid stone buildings but with a light and transparent look. When you look right there's the leasure exchange and traditional new offices, and left is that modern looking glass office, that whole area is starting to look quite good (perhaps for the first time in a century).


The Gatehaus is indeed looking impressive and I will post some new pictures up of it tomorrow probably on the Bradford thread. The office you mention is Shire House and is also as you say of good design, but is still empty after a year. Not sure what you mean about the Leisure Exchange though. This is one these horrible warehouse like buildings which seems to exchange the old cinema ideals with a kind of factory line entertainment value. Functional but it adds nothing whatsoever to the city architecturally. As for the traditional offices, don't make me laugh, those cheap as shite Yorkshire Water offices are pathetic compared to the neighboring Little Germany area. That side of the road is just embarrassing by comparison. Should be a new Urban Village in this area though replacing some of the old offices in this area, hopefully something that will match the quality of Little Germany.

Yes, forgot about the Deltalord scheme, that should have a crane within a couple of months, and the University 'Rose Bowl' building shouldn't be far behind.

Perhaps, though I think it probably looked at least alright-ish before all the 60's/70's developments, I guess before then though, all the buildings were blackened out through industry. I guess no one actually got to see the Victorian Bradford in all its original pride. No point looking back now though, just wish there were more projects like the Gatehaus that would at least try to build some connection to the past, as well as being good in quality. Each new Broadway render is another disappointment to something that won't look all that different to what was there before.

I noticed some HBG cranes in Liverpool, all in orange and green livery, and all the topless type. HBG must have been on a spending spree recently. I bet they're not cheap.

Does Shipley and Guiseley count as outer? There's 4 (yes four!) in Shipley and 1 in Guiseley.

Latitudes crane, appears to belong to HBG. It has a really long boom, due to being on the edge of the plot rather than the middle.

Great stuff Rob. I wasn't too sure if it was new as i could just make it out from my place with a bit of a hangover still going strong but it did appear to only have half the jib on. When i got to town it was all in place as you see in the pic!

There seems to be a new multi storey car park behind the offices at about 5 decks high, presumably it will have helped with that, although it will have been one of those mobiles with a horizontal boom atttachment rather than a proper tower crane.

New crane gone up in Meanwood at the new apartments being built on the site of the old Beckett pub.

Decent sized green crane gone up on the Rose Bowl site. Reckon there will be at least 1 more to come

Don't think we will see us catching up with Manchester, but I reckon Leeds could easily have the most cranes apart from London and Mancs as the new retail development sites start to be developed, and new developments kick off in the near future.

I think Sheffield will be giving Leeds a run for it's money with regards to the number of cranes on your skyline.


Our current crane count is 26 (not as many in the outskirts as Leeds), there is over one billion of construction taking place in the first phase of Sheffield's new retail quarter starting in the new year and the huge Moor redevelopment is now gathering pace.

the rest of the cranes you include in your list are for the whole of the midlands including schools, hospitals, colleges in diferent towns such as walsall, wolverhampton, tipton, west bromwhich and sutton coldfield. It would be a bit like including wakefield, bradford, dewsbury and harrogate.

Well, it's near enough, the whole Hospital campus is that big, it straddles the south of the city centre! (As Manc Uni/MMU are very much a part of the City Centre/Oxford Rd Corridor, which stops as you reach Rusholme/Whitworth Park.) :)

How different forums choose to set their crane count boundary is up to them.

For us in Leeds it is the Leeds boundary, as that encloses Leeds as a seperate entity from other surrounding towns and cities which are 'spiritualy' independent.

Right now, theres only 1? crane in Harrogate, but not too long ago there were numerous cranes. You shouldn't be suprised to see a good number of cranes in Harrogate; remember we have the international centre, which has been constantly redeveloping for a long time. There were a few cranes during Harrogate House and Royal Baths 2 construction. Dewsbury and Wakefield? Don't know. But Huddersfield and Bradford have a few.

York has one at the moment.
I think there's two in Bradford and three in Shipley.

My school :) There may well be others; I haven't been round Knaresborough, or any of the office parks (where most development usually takes place) for ages.

I was in Knaresborough about three weeks ago, didn't see much going on there, although I know there is a new Travelodge planned at the A1M/A59 junction business park, so you never know.

I remember seeing one in Thirsk about a year ago in one of my rare trips that way, which quite shocked me, must have been for some large retirement apartment block or something.

Wonder when crane 2 or perhaps 3 will go up on the old Broadcasting Place site. They seem to be working on the lower rise buildings now, so can't be much longer.

Will it have another crane on site? The current crane looks fairly tall as it is.

I've seen a few of the tilting top type in London before now, this is the first one I've seen outside London.

It looks a bit like a topless crane on a standard tower with the cab in the usual place, but the entire horizontal jib tilts to make it a luffing jib, pushed by a hydraulic ram near the pivot point, the counterweight swivels as the jib moves up and down to keep the weights hanging vertical at all times.

My uncle visited Leeds about 3 weeks ago and described it as crane city.
He'd not been for over 10 years and said he was amazed at how much it had changed.

In a good or bad way?

Oh in a good way, him and his wife loved it. They went for a weekend and stayed in the IBIS which I recommended (due to a low budget) to them and they said the hotel was brilliant.
They especially liked Leeds City Market and the arcades.
There planning a visit in a few months time and Im going to meet them in town and go for a drink somewhere.

Oh good :) Make sure they see the best of Leeds!

Will the crane count be kept up in 2008 though?

Looking at that list I reckon over half will go by the second half of 2008 and are there that many more to start?

We will obviously get some cranes at Lumiere at some time, probably some on Trinity and I think we expect City square House (which has Planning Permission) to start - but nothing else seems to be really certain.

Am I being too pessimistic?

I think it will stay around that number; there are several smaller schemes starting also.

The crane in Guiseley has come down.

30 was a peak number, and set a good record, but it's unlikely to stay that high. I think it'll get down to about 20 later in 2008 as a number of projects complete. The Guisely one finishing starts the decline in numbers.

The crane at the Mint on Sweet Street in Holbeck was taken down yesterday.

Must be time for the other 2 cranes at Granary Wharf to start showing above the skyline. The bases are on site, and construction on the sites are going ahead with speed. I reckon it could be this weekend when we see these cranes rise.

A large blue luffing jib crane has gone up on site at the Verto apartments on Skinner Lane. I reckon 2 more at Granary Wharf in the very near future.

Will we be at record numbers with 3 new cranes in Leeds City centre, that would make 26 in total?

Rob There's a crane in Guiseley near Morrisons. New apartments I think.

I've seen that one. I don't think it counts for the list as it's not really a tower crane, it's a mobile self erecting crane with a horizontal jib top which acts like a tower crane.

The city looks alot smaller than it is in that picture! I love how the colourful mural appears out of the rather 'northern' rooftops there. In some ways regarding the mural it's a shame it's there because those buildings could really do with redeveloping somehow, and it's certainly not easily visible or best presented- at the same time its a wonderful piece of public art that doesn't want to be lost in a redevelopment/renovation scheme.

I don't those buildings that house Milo's, Wire etc are in any desperate need for redevelopment. They're great looking buildings. I just hate the bus stops around there.

I remember waiting for the No 13 bus near the corn exchange
in the early 80's me been a teenager I noticed this beautiful girl with a long pony tail, perched on the ladder painting the said mural, ah well I missed the bloody bus for obvious reasons.. well that said she left me a permanent reminder as she is part of the mural ! next time your in town check her out, very nice bottom ! :)

It sure does at 10x !, plus I used a setting with multiple focal points "umm still sort of getting to grips with it" of course I was trying to get a close up of the gents working on the crane.

I spotted a new crane today near to the university; I was too far away to place it accurately but it seemed to be close to Clarendon Road. Does anyone know what the building project there is?

The only crane I can spot near Clarendon Road is behind the Refectory in Leeds University. I think they are building an extension to the Earth and Environment faculty, on (what was) the grassy area behind the refec.

When I first glanced at that I caught 'They are building an extension to the Earth' :)

Yes, they demolished Perseverance Mills (the one that said Peter Laycock on the tower) about a year ago for some bland student block-permission being refused by the council but overturned by an inspector on appeal! Nothing to get too excited about...

I'm moving up to Leeds in Sept start arc at the met Looking forward to it after the open day was really positive. I was in London last year real close to the city which was cool and went to NYC the year before to the WTC memorial my cousin worked there but survived. Looking forward to the Met stayed in Leeds for a few months a few years back in my raving daze. Whats the scene like? The new buildings were just beginning when I was there. LoL C y'all soon . peace

Looks like a new crane with a modern looking cab, and appears to have a moving ballast? which can be positioned further out while the jip is in lowered wider radius position. That should improve the lifting capacity at larger radii. Will need a closer when loads are (eventually) being lifted regularly.

Entire city or just the city centre?

I know of 4 at Trinity Leeds, and 2 will be going up very shortly at the Arena. Not sure if there are any more in the city centre. Should be a different story next year with Met Uni developments, a number of hotel developments around the Arena and Whitehall Rd development........

I think it would be a good idea to keep this thread up to date - so anybody seeing any activity anywhere in the city could report here. The only immediate problem is of course the lack of work currently ongoing.

So at present we have the 4 cranes on Trinity with some expected on the arena. I dont know of any others at present but does anybody else?
