dysan1 August 23rd, 2006, 12:38 AM a design FAR more relevant to its surroundings than topaz...also it suits a beach environment, topaz suits inner city, commercial
SA BOY August 23rd, 2006, 05:36 AM best looking high rise in Cape Town me thinks. I agree 100% with Mike on this one.
It has the 3 basic components of a tower. Strong natural stone base, elegant facade in tower and a minimalist crown
thryve August 23rd, 2006, 06:19 AM Gorgeous... sexy. Elegant. Relevant and in context. I love it!!!
Caisson Boy August 23rd, 2006, 09:53 AM O Giles, I love it when you talk swanky! Sadly, like most other buildings in Strand, this one will be filled to capacity by old folk - pensioners!

Caisson Boy September 7th, 2006, 09:34 AM fantastic,....Strand- Cape Town's next big thing...
I'm not so sure Mo... It seems to me like things have sort of wound down in Strand now. The past three years saw the construction of about 6 or 7 towers, but now everything seems to be finished with not much in the pipeline, except maybe Hibernian Towers. Nothing became of Emerald Isle, and Multi-Projects, who developed many of the new towers, don't have anything new high-rise on their site. I think the rush is over. No mo rush! (Geddit? Geddit?) :)
I must say, that I wouldn't be surprised if Cape Town's next big thing was Table View/Blouberg. But I think it is too soon to say.
Durbsboi September 7th, 2006, 09:49 AM This building is mind blowingly sexy!

Durbsboi March 16th, 2007, 08:12 AM Looks beautiful, so elegant, & its position is jus perfect, stands out of the crowd for everyone to admire it. :)
mike2005 March 19th, 2007, 06:43 PM true but I have to say I have never liked strand or somerset west. I know they are popular but strand looks rather tired despite the new buildings and somerset west is a bit crappy. I think Im probably a minority on this but Blouberg/ Big Bay is so much better (closer to town, dont have to drive on the hell run to get home after dark, much better laid out etc and more or less the same prices. For me its a no brainer!!)

Jakes1 June 21st, 2007, 10:07 AM Now that is moer sexy. The one thing that always bothered me about strand is the area that stretches inland. If too many highrises crowd the beach, the inland part can be neglected. But Nautica will hopefully spur some life into this dead and boring area

Mosi-oa-Tunya August 30th, 2007, 12:09 AM OWN THE BEST VIEW ON EARTH
This design which takes it's inspiration from the shape of an eagle's wings in flight, boasts a sense of openness which is carried through to all of it's 85 stunning units. Attention to detail in every facet of this project gives holiday makers a sense of luxury and ease of living and entertaining. Each apartment gives the feeling that one is suspended above the ocean, almost as though on a luxury ocean liner. Ocean View is situated just 30 minutes from the Cape Town International airport, 40 minutes from Cape Town, 45 minutes from Hermanus and 15 minutes from world renowned golf and wine estates. Perfect for business or a gateway for the family.
Situated in prime position on Main Beach Road in The Strand, Cape Town, Ocean View boasts unspoiled views across False Bay and the surrounding mountain ranges.
"It is a dynamic design that strives to move away from the
traditional square grid system and straight columns that do not
reflect the modern architectural movement of today."
The developer of the R250-million futuristic and innovative design is SouthNet Projects. The distinctive and unique design of this immaculate construction was conceived by Christo Botha of M&B Architects and it incorporates flowing contours, rounded edges and free flowing surfaces, supporting a powerful body.
The building is also raised more than two meters above street level and boasts unique features such as a pool which runs the full length of the front of the building and which sulminates the communal pool. Even the view of the ocean from the lowest level apartments is unobscured while still maintaining total privacy.
Indeed, freedom and wide open space is a major theme of Ocean View. The open plan look has been partly achieved through the use of cantilevers which stretch out on either side of the center tower on each floor - somewhat of an engineering marvel. A glass facade provides complete balance to the horizontal floors giving a multi-winged appearance to the building. Also the use of both natural and high tech materials give Ocean View a highly sophisticated feel. This sense of openness is carried through to all 85 units of the development.
Fold away glass partitions are all that separate the living areas from the open balcony, allowing for a total experience of exposure to the ocean and to the outside. With crystal clear views of the sea and mountains from each of the bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, a minimal use of internal walls means that the view is, at all times as unimpeded as possible.
For the Architects, it was important to create a design that was reflective of a more modern trend in architecture today. Comments Design Architect Christo Botha: "Ocean View is a modern contemporary design more in keeping with international architectural trends - it is a dynamic design that strives to move away from the traditional square grid system and straight columns that do not reflect the modern architectural movement of today."
The unique nature of the building provided for some special challenges for the architects. Appropriately enough, nature itself presented an obstacle in the form of abnormally strong winds, which the Strand is well known for, and which caused numerous delays in the schedule. Additionally, Project Architect Francois van Aswegen notes: "Due to the unorecedented level of detailing in Ocean View and the unique shape of the structure, a lot of detail had to be resolved with a hands on approach.

I agree with that. It is one of my favourites and it is striking looking with the background of the Helderberg mountains! Also like the peninsula-shaped apartment that has views of the sea, mountain and Strand skyline. Haven't seen anything like it in SA.

annman December 23rd, 2008, 08:56 PM ^^ I actually like the fact that Stand is like a "highrise residential test ground." It gives the area a type of character that Strand really never had. In the Cape we have a lot of lowrise, sensitive seaside suburbs, like Camps Bay, Gordon's Bay, Simon's Town etc. Not every building in Stand is necessarily the most awesome, but it is a very interesting architectural hodge-podge nonetheless.
