Durban benefits from World class Point Waterfront

The Point Waterfront Development promises to be one of South Africa's flagship real estate developments. According to Logie Naidoo, Durban's Deputy Mayor, the point will do for Durban what the V&A Waterfront has done for Cape Town. THis unique development with it's Venetian canal system, open recreational areas, harbour and sea frontages will be a waterfront city within a city.

Preparation work on the 1.5 billion rand project to widen the harbour entrance has already started and will be in full swing in the next 12 months. This will allow bigger vessels and international cruise liners to use the Durban port more effectively.

The small craft harbour between Vetchie's Pier and the harbour entrance, with all the recreational facilities has also been approved by the Ethekweni Council.

As the good news about the Point Waterfront is spreading and the development is taking shape, more and more sold signs are going up, reflecting the huge recent demand for property in the unique area.

This development is well underway and also comprises a retail development (the Rope Shed) and fronts Alexandra Square

East Point is a mixed use property development on the Durban Point. It is made up of a combination of retail, office and luxury one, two and three bedroom (Penthouse) apartments. The two and three bedroom units are double volume with spectacular 4,8 metre floor to ceiling views of Durban harbour and the Bluff. Boasting top of the range finishes, this "Elegant Industrial" development, is a first in Durban for its Steel portal frame which makes for fast track construction, and elements not usually seen in a residential application. The development adjoins Alexandra Square a Park and the Rope Shed, a small commercial development which is in effect, phase one of East Point.

Rope Shed, Point

Built in the 19th century, it is a well-preserved building and a relic from the days of the sailing ships when rope replacements were constantly in need.
Signal Road, Point, Durban.

This building is to now house 2 restaurants and 3 upscale stores

According to the Cambell Collections, Alexandra Square used to be a cargo loading and recieving point during the Boer War. The rejuvenated square will house memorials to the Boer war period that were of significance to the point as well as a rememberance of Ghandi, for it was at Alexandra square that he stood by and helped protest against the imminent destruction of the Indian households at the point

The Cast

Firstly, a closer look at the dramatis personae; Amuster of those who had gathered at Alexandra Square to destruct the landing of the Indians reflected that there were nearly a thousand railway men. The yacht club, the point club and rowing club had 150 in attendance, carpenters and joiners 450, printers 80, shop assistants about 400, tailors and saddlers 70,builders and bricklayers 200 and from the general public, about a 1,000.

But far more ominous was the recruitment by the whites of over 500 blacks armed with sticks which they brandished whilst singing war songs.

(Natal Advertiser, January 15, 1897).

Before the meeting this crowd of over 5,000 had lined the entire waterfront and as the Naderi and the Courtland approached, the crowd moved to the North Pier and thereafter moved to Alexander Square.

thanks durbs, really need to work on my photo posting skills.

I think it looks good from that tiny render.. i wonder if it will ever be built though - the point has really really slowed down.
