View Full Version : Picture Request Thread
Smileyface August 5th, 2005, 08:05 PM I'm off into Bham for a major photo session either Saturday or Sunday. I'm gonna be capturing the usual suspects;HCT, Orion, Masshouse, Post and Mails demise etc. I'm also interested in having a look around the Gun Quarter after seeing Brum 2003's thread so I'll get a few shots from round there as well. Is there anywhere or anything else I should definitely be pointing my camera lens at.....let me know and I'll try my best.
Biosonic August 5th, 2005, 08:10 PM Nice one Smiley. If you can (and you fancy it), see if you can go up the red cage car park on Brunel St and take a pic from the angle that the old New St pic is on the Old Brum thread. It would be interesting to see how the new station develops from this angle! :)
It's next to Orion so it's not out of your way...
Good luck :) :) :)
Smileyface August 5th, 2005, 08:12 PM Yeah I know the one, I've poked my lens through that red mesh on many occasions to get pics of Orion in its early stages.
Soul_13 August 5th, 2005, 10:51 PM Some photos I took today around the Financial quarter.

birminghamculture August 5th, 2005, 10:57 PM The BST site Smiley? and a few of Holiday Wharf ... Oh and if its not to far out your way the land around the BT Tower, thats only if you can Thanks :cheers1:
Smileyface August 5th, 2005, 11:00 PM I should be able to get all those in no probs....seeing as we've gone render mad at the moment try and think of some new vantage points within the city centre that would have a lot of the recent proposals in them.
Smileyface August 5th, 2005, 11:02 PM Excellent pics btw Soul 13, you ought to post them on this thread below so they can be appreciated by a wider audience

Yes, Good idea ... do you think you could get to the top of the Matthew Boulton college ;) Or Park Central? how about ST Andrews aswell, we havent had one of those for a while. that gives us quite a large scope to play with :dunno:
Smileyface August 5th, 2005, 11:10 PM If I drive I'll get a few distance shots (I'll class the view from St Andrews as distance) but if I go by public transport (fancy a few beers in town  ) I'll only be taking shots from inside the centralish area
birminghamculture August 7th, 2005, 12:04 AM Go to the NIA and then take some pictures from there, theres some great shots. Especially at night when Quayside and BT are lit up :)

Martin G August 7th, 2005, 12:24 AM Don't forget the old wasteland near Duddeston Station where the old scuzzy hags hang about and drink meth and absinthe will you Smiley? :)
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 12:31 AM They are my best friends so i normally hang out around there anyway.....they're all abit camera shy so i'll probably give that one a miss :)
Martin G August 7th, 2005, 12:40 AM Pah! Lightweight!
:poke:
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 12:49 AM If I go into Brum by train I stop at Duddeston....just for you Martin I'll get your special photo
Martin G August 7th, 2005, 01:08 AM Duddeston station used to be a hive of activity - carriage sheds, shunting yards, acres of tracks and electric powerline gantries - now it's overgrown, deserted, run down and as derelict as it's possible to imagine. Quite why railtrack closed that whole depot down is a mystery - it would have seen better servuce retained as a secondary goods yard or even a new EMU depot instead of the Soho site (on the line between Brum and Wolverhampton). Duddeston used to have four platforms too - and now it's a stunted island platform with the other one overgrown and completely abandoned.
What it used to look like:

http://www.railaroundbirmingham.co.uk/full_photos/duddeston_1986_stevejones.JPG

http://www.railaroundbirmingham.co.uk/full_photos/duddeston_towards_bham_from_lichfield_platform_&astonsignallingcentre.JPG
depressing, huh?
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 01:38 AM It's not exactly the highlight of the Walsall to Bham rail journey...
Martin G August 7th, 2005, 01:48 AM It reminds me of Edge Hill in Liverpool - which is similarly expansive but with even more marshalling yards, overhead clutter, dereliction etc - (also, like Duddeston, it's the first stop you encounter out from the main terminal) but at least its platforms are still in use and not overgrown to buggery like these here at Duddeston - and secondly, most of the tracks are still in place, despite them all being in the main unused....but it's also a depressing vista to behold as the train trundles past.
Smileyface August 7th, 2005, 02:04 AM Bloody hell after that description I think I'll drive
Smileyface August 23rd, 2005, 11:56 PM If it's nice weather this Sunday I'll try and get some distance shots of the skyline.....throw some ideas at me. I'm driving back from friends in Worcester and I'm already planning to try some shots from the two resevoirs;Bartley and Edgbaston. I don't mind taking a short detour for a good pic though of course I'll only be bothering if it's clear weather :)
MarcusValhalla August 24th, 2005, 12:35 AM I got in my car to go for a sunday drive (on sunday, oddly enough...) and I decided to take my camera and go via Frankly Beeches (the layby where you get the view over Bartley Green reservoir)... but the car died. So no pictures from me, and the bus to work this week - as a result I can tell you that demolition is ongoing at Pebble Mill, and HCT looks great from the top deck as you go past Sainsburys in Selly Oak, that hotel thing at Great Park looks, er, cheap, the building behind Bristol Street Motors is empty, as is the old Volvo dealership... I'd try to get pictures but all the grafitti on the bus windows makes it impossible...
Smileyface September 15th, 2005, 12:14 AM Ok I'm due another photo session and I'm 99% certain I'll be popping into Brum this Sunday for one......HCT's front cladding is nearly complete and there's Orion and Masshouse to catch up on.
I want something different to photograph though......in the past Dee came up with taking photo's round Eastside before the big transformation, that was about a year ago and they are there for prosperity now to look back at in several years time (actually i need to repost them coz the old ones were deleted thanks to the Hacker). Then someone else came up with The Gun Quarter which was somewhere I'd never been before. Can anyone come up with somewhere roughly within the central area that really needs photographing for whatever reason....I don't mean an individual building or complex but an area like the previous two examples :)
morestoreysplease September 15th, 2005, 12:53 AM Hampton St - the road to Hockley.
U475 Foxtrot September 15th, 2005, 01:00 AM jewellery quarter? park central? Aston uni/Eastside canals?
Biosonic September 15th, 2005, 11:15 AM How about a journey from King Edwards Wharf along the canal to either Five Ways or Brindley House (by the BT Tower)?
Blunther September 15th, 2005, 11:54 AM If you're in the area, some pictures of the River Rea in Digbeth?
Never seen it meself I don't think....
pirlo_21 September 15th, 2005, 01:02 PM yeah the river rea please
birminghamculture September 15th, 2005, 01:33 PM I know it sounds daft, but how about a pic form the NIA ;) ... I promise it doesnt have to be at night this time, but if you cross the bridge at Brindley Place the view is something, plus we can plan some future renders from there :)
and yeh the River Rea if you could, the skyline from there aswell is pretty special :cheers1:
Steve-e-b September 15th, 2005, 01:36 PM Not sure you'll get many pictures of the river Rea in Digbeth. It's culverted, which means it doesn't flow along its original route, but down a straight concrete channel between buildings.
The only places I know you can see the river are from the top deck of a bus going down Bradford Street (wall of the bridge is too high to look over) and from the towpath on the Grand Union canal.
Steve-e-b September 15th, 2005, 01:44 PM Where's the best viewing point from the NIA - do you mean one of the car parks or somewhere in the NIA itself?
Blunther September 15th, 2005, 01:49 PM The only places I know you can see the river are from the top deck of a bus going down Bradford Street
No wirres then, Smiley can leap like a frog.
birminghamculture September 15th, 2005, 01:49 PM Where's the best viewing point from the NIA - do you mean one of the car parks or somewhere in the NIA itself?
If you cross the bridge by the Sea Life Center over to the NIA and walk round a lil bit the skyline scopes out and at night with the BT tower and Quayside lit up looks amazing soon to have the likes of Orion and HCT also doing the buisness AC would top it all off :)
Steve-e-b September 15th, 2005, 02:21 PM If you cross the bridge by the Sea Life Center over to the NIA the view and walk round a lil bit the skyline scopes out and at night with the BT tower and Quayside lit up looks amazing soon to have the likes of Orion and HCT laos doing the buisness AC would top it all off :)
Thanks BC. Never tried going that way before.
Smileyface September 15th, 2005, 08:14 PM I'm quite intrigued by the sound of the river Rea and I'll take them all into conscideration, but if the weather's like it's been today then I'll probably give it a miss. What is the forecast for Sunday?
Blunther September 16th, 2005, 09:50 AM Looks alright for Sunday.
Smileyface September 16th, 2005, 09:58 AM
Smileyface September 18th, 2005, 03:02 PM Well as per usual the weather turned out shite so I never bothered going into central Birmingham. I was stopping at friends last night who live near Fort Dunlop so I did manage to get a couple of pics of that on my way home so all is not lost......bloody stupid weather forecastors can't get anything right :bash:

GAZ September 22nd, 2005, 01:08 PM anyone got any plans of going to town to get some pics??
if it was too cloudy on sunday is anyone going this week???
Bachy Soletanche September 26th, 2005, 12:08 PM There's a picture of the River Rea in the http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=248179
thread. But it's sandwiched between loads of some really badly written text, just scroll till you find the good stuff.

Sorry, I crossed over to the darkside this weekend and went up to Manchester to take some photo's (and visit friends). If it's decent weather next Sunday I'll be popping down Brum to get some.
morestoreysplease November 18th, 2005, 03:01 AM I heard the sunny weather's there in Brum too - a tad chillier I suppose though. Who's out and about the weekend then? Any danger of somebody taking pics of all the goings on?
I'll get the beers in on the 23rd!
Thanks!
Blunther November 18th, 2005, 11:09 AM The weather's been cracking. Ain't seen a cloud all week, but it's been bloody cold. -4 last night I think, and max temperature of 5 degrees today. Just walked into work, and it certainly woke me up...

U475 Foxtrot December 17th, 2005, 12:32 AM The argent center never gets enough coverage, vittoria works, Lord Clifton or key hill cemetry? If fact all of it would be nice!
If not the new city living blocks or the derlict or heritage side would be cool CH or even the really wanky buildings which shouldn't have been built :)
I keep meaning to have a big roam around there from the Hockley Flyover into town myself but I'm too lazy

No worries Foxtrot, I get the tram in the morning so the Lord Clifton and Key Hill are no problem, and i walk back into town past Argent and Vittoria.
Meanwhile i have a of shot of a derelict listed building on Legge Lane that is up for planning permission. I took this from the same car park that i took the shot that i have in the skyline thread, you can get an idea of some of the view that that place must have.

Nacho January 23rd, 2006, 09:31 PM Well,at least the school looks in keeping with the area.
Bachy Soletanche January 23rd, 2006, 10:11 PM If that one over the road from the School had been done in matching red brick it would have looked alright. The grey beams matching the stone inlay in the Victorian Windows stills etc.
I wonder why they built it in that sorta London (?) grey brick colour. Just general bad architecture?
CargoHold January 23rd, 2006, 10:48 PM I like it, ok, the finish/choice of brick could of been a little more inspired but i like the bold lines. If you take a good long walk around the JQ you will find many styles of architecture, this is one of my favourite modern buildings in the area.

mk61 August 23rd, 2007, 05:28 PM Took me a bloody age to find this thread!
Right - the forecast for Friday is 22c and clear skies - and for once I'm definitely at a loose end, so I'm going to dig out the S5500, whack some batteries in there and head into town.
I'm going to try to cover most of the recently completed and U/C stuff on the development map if I can. Any requests?
Yes, Butterfield, if you're reading this I am going to get those two blocks in Old Hill.
feltip August 23rd, 2007, 05:31 PM Yes please, could you take photo of the student accommodation opp garage on Bath Row, parallel to canal and railway. You can see it from Islington Row Middleway. We had planning app on here but no-one took any photos of the finished thing.

Memory permitting, certainly.

Engels August 24th, 2007, 02:26 AM Park Central please mk, we barely ever see it on here yet it is the biggest development going on in Brum (+ it's within the wider definition of the city centre)
mk61 August 24th, 2007, 09:04 PM That took a lot longer than I was expecting.

Good stuff MK. I'm glad you've resurrected this thread coz it's very useful and I look forward to seeing all your photos too - I was thinking about going out and taking some photos this weekend but I can put my feet up now:)
mk61 August 26th, 2007, 12:20 AM aye, it was needed. A good influx of photos livens the place up no end.

smysticed August 27th, 2007, 01:18 PM Yeah, looks alright, wouldn't want things like that everywhere, mind.
Erebus555 August 27th, 2007, 04:08 PM It all looks good except for the beige colour on the render - very reminiscent of Orion.
smysticed August 27th, 2007, 04:47 PM To me, the beige isn't so bad here as it's set amongst some other colours to give it some interest. Plus it seems relatively uniform in colour...
The problem with Orion is that such a large expanse of the beige stuff doesn't really work, and it's really badly done to boot.

Erebus555 August 29th, 2007, 10:43 PM Give us a pic of a tower block ;) :okay:
mk61 August 29th, 2007, 10:43 PM Well I didn't get that plot near the Ibis at park central that morestoreys mentioned a while back. The Ibis, I believe, is on Irving street. He also wanted the Aston Uni student blocks. I'm still thinking about things I might have missed out.
I take it you're concentrating on the central area - which is good as my last foray took me around the ringroad really. If you're using the Livery St MSCP for Snow Hill be mindful of security - they copped me straight away, hence no pics of that.
Here's the big map anyway, in case anybody spots anything.

mk61 August 29th, 2007, 10:46 PM Well I didn't get that plot near the Ibis at park central that morestoreys mentioned a while back.
Either Exeter Passage or Lytham Croft it would seem.
mikey23 August 29th, 2007, 10:47 PM Peat house?
11 Brindley place?
Erebus555 August 29th, 2007, 10:48 PM ^^Those two definitely. We haven't had enough updates for them at all! :ohno:
mk61 August 29th, 2007, 10:49 PM I'm adding them to my U/C list. It's a work in progress :)
feltip August 29th, 2007, 10:52 PM What about Peat House, we haven't seen that for a while.
mk61 August 29th, 2007, 11:00 PM We need an update on the HUB as well.
Oh, and Snow Hill northern entrance works - the top deck of Snow Hill carpark would be good for that. See if you can see underground :)
smysticed August 29th, 2007, 11:03 PM Ok, these'll all go onto my list :okay:
morestoreysplease August 29th, 2007, 11:35 PM Appreciate the earlier snaps bigtime MK!! Good luck tomorrow Smys and bring the sun back with you!!
smysticed August 29th, 2007, 11:44 PM Thanks msp! :)
Biosonic August 30th, 2007, 03:06 PM Some pics of the parks in Park Central would be good if you are in that area :)
smysticed August 30th, 2007, 07:26 PM Sorry Bio, I'd gone by the time you'd posted this, and even though I was vaguely nearby at one point (Holloway Circus area) mk61 got some pics of Park Central the other day, so I didn't head down that way :( Sorry!
Biosonic August 31st, 2007, 11:09 AM No worries :)
Smileyface November 30th, 2007, 01:37 AM I had to dig this up from page six!! I'm hoping to do an extensive photo jaunt into the city centre soon - within the next week - and I need the experts amongst you to make sure I get the right photos! There's so much going on in the city now and I spend so little time on here I need a list of where to go! Please state the obvious and the not so obvious and I will fit them all in on my travels......any ideas for anything a bit leftfield is always taken into consideration too. I remember someone mentioning the Gun Quarter before and I really enjoyed photographing that part of the city.
Enough waffling, just tell me where to point my camera!!:)
feltip November 30th, 2007, 02:12 AM What about the development behind the Dome and Clydesdale Tower near Park Central. Essex passage or something?
Brindley House would be good to see now the covers coming off.
and definitely Gun Quarter, a much under photographed area.
thanks in advance Smiley :)
Engels November 30th, 2007, 02:22 AM I'd second the shout for the Park Central area but you must push down towards the Holloway circus end of the development as we never get photos of that. Then perhaps into Digbeth to take some photos around Bradford st.. some street-scapes for both would be good.
Erebus555 November 30th, 2007, 09:20 AM Curzon Gate in the Eastside and any other interesting things you might catch that way :)
Biosonic November 30th, 2007, 11:11 AM Well, there seems to be much going on in Digbeth, and I would also suggest a gentle walk up Constitution Hill as IMO some of Birmingham's finest Victorian buidlings exist there, sadly under-loved :( And there's a great viewpoint of Snowhill :)
Then maybe a side-turn towards St Paul's Square as there is a lot of demo going on around there (Ansty Court area/Caroline St).
Smileyface December 2nd, 2007, 01:55 AM ^^
Some good ideas there. I'll be in the city either this Wednesday or Thursday and I might even try to get some night shots in if I'm there late enough so ideas/viewpoints on that subject would be appreciated too:)
mk61 January 24th, 2008, 01:15 AM Well, I intended to go into town today and get some pictures but my employers decided they loved me so much they insisted I spend the entire day with them. Tomorrow - it's on!
Anybody have anything they especially want a snap of?
feltip January 24th, 2008, 01:21 AM I know its cheeky, as I haven't ventured that far, but maybe Curzon Gate please ;)
Engels January 24th, 2008, 01:48 AM If you are the other side of town to feltip's request then a mooch around the jewelry quarter as there have been a few developments we haven't see updates on for a while + a few that probably haven't been photographed since they were complete. Good spot for photos of Brindley house too.
edit
excuse me i should say, please and thank you :)
mk61 January 24th, 2008, 01:52 AM Done and done :)
van heckler January 24th, 2008, 02:04 AM I'm working on a thread which lists every building in Birmingham over 50m and I can't find any decent photos of the following...
One Martineau Place
Londonderry House
Auchenleck House
Five Ways Tower
Any chance you could get the top 2?
mk61 January 24th, 2008, 02:13 AM Easily done also.
mk61 January 24th, 2008, 04:03 PM Right - mission accomplished, though I've used up every spare second of my day - so I'll be uploading and posting everything at some ungodly hour of the night I suppose. Have a happy day posting me peoples
Smileyface June 11th, 2008, 11:26 PM For the first time in ages I should be popping into the city centre with my camera sometime over the next few days. Most projects are kept up to date these days by a whole new breed of excellent photographers we have on the Brym forums: what I'm asking (as I have done before on this thread) is there - away from all the main projects - any place or area that could do with being photographed? Suggestions before were The Gun Quarter and Eastside (2 years ago) with which I duly obliged and enjoyed. Anywhere within the A4540 ring-road is okay by me.......I'll try to get most of the main stuff going on too while I'm out and about!
Smileyface June 12th, 2008, 12:33 PM ^^
As soon as I mention something like this the heavens always seem to open:ohno: - what happened to all the nice weather we had earlier in the week.....while I was at work?:bash:
