SoboleuS August 6th, 2005, 10:48 PM Brussels. But Philly's City Hall looks great too.

Zaki August 8th, 2005, 02:02 AM 1.Toronto
2.London
3. Tokyo
I am not a fan of historic architecture
DenverDane August 8th, 2005, 02:49 AM BRUSSELS
Look at all the details! Truly a masterpiece.
mumbojumbo August 8th, 2005, 05:20 AM Tokyo
RRC August 8th, 2005, 05:45 AM Bruxelas, or Brussels ;)
DrDan August 8th, 2005, 05:56 AM I really like london's, but voted for brussels - you would never see something that ornate built again!
not knocking toronto as a city, but I really don't know why their city hall is in this thread - it's pretty average, albeit tall.
hkskyline August 8th, 2005, 06:04 AM Brussels
i_am_hydrogen August 8th, 2005, 06:31 AM Brussels -- it's a real masterpiece.
JuanPaulo August 10th, 2005, 01:06 AM Brussels definetely. Not to offend anybody, but I do not see anything special about Toronto's City Hall. Yes they are curved, but to me they are just big slabs.
in'sauga August 10th, 2005, 02:33 AM ^ I agree. I personally dislike Toronto's city hall. Maybe because I see it so often i've just grown tired of it. It was a VERY innovative building when it was built still is in some respects but I would prefer if it were glass all around. From behind looking at concrete slabs it is very unattractive. also theres a running track, concrete, which encircles it which no one uses because someone once triped and fell while jogging on an uneven piece of pavement. That has to be demolished. The square is however involved in a redesign contest so my finger are crossed!
In the meantime...having been to Brussels, it's city hall is absolutely spectacular, so it gets my vote easily.
addisonwesley August 10th, 2005, 02:50 AM Hmm yes, the Brussels one is really nice and ornate. Must make quite an impression in that area. I like it.
dom August 10th, 2005, 03:47 AM Brussels! What a masterpiece.
But the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings are one hell of an achievement... all the Tokyo gov needs to do is now light them up at night. The views from the (Free!) observation decks of the rest of Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo, Mount Fuji (!) and Yokohama in the distance are fabulous. :)
addisonwesley August 10th, 2005, 05:46 PM Toronto's city hall is a metaphor.
Travis007 August 10th, 2005, 10:15 PM 1. Brussels
2. London
3. Tokyo
4. Philly
5. Toronto
wjfox August 10th, 2005, 10:38 PM Lol, somehow I think Brussels is going to win this. It has 57% of the votes at the moment.
Phobos August 11th, 2005, 12:34 AM Philadelphia.
algonquin August 11th, 2005, 11:56 PM I'm a fan of modernism, so it's a toss up between Toronto and London for me. I love Fosters work, so I'll go with London.
AcesHigh August 12th, 2005, 12:22 AM London´s city hall is THAT SMALL??? For a city with 10 million people??? Really... its smaller than the city hall of my city, which has 250k people and its not capital of anything.
Latoso August 12th, 2005, 01:35 AM Philly

Darius August 14th, 2005, 01:39 AM Brussels by far. If Vienna was nominated, I would've had a difficult time making this choice.
Bitxofo August 14th, 2005, 04:47 AM Brussels.

United-States-of-America August 14th, 2005, 05:39 AM You forgot the NYC City Hall. It's a piece of gem, I tell you.

v:zero August 14th, 2005, 06:32 AM ^^ You shouldve nominated it
United-States-of-America August 14th, 2005, 06:35 AM Oh well.
Sonic from Padova August 14th, 2005, 12:11 PM GLA of London is the best city hall of the world!!!!!
nick_taylor August 14th, 2005, 05:32 PM I only wish I had seen this nomination thread before because the UK and other continental European cities have magnificant city/town halls. Personally London has lagged behind other UK cities with its city hall, the original City Hall (the massive building next to the London Eye) isn't anything to really shout. It is though far nicer than the current London City Hall and the Toronto + Tokyo City Hall's. The nicest here though is clearly Brussels - just look at it - the detail, the thought, the atmosphere, the imposing nature.
All someone needs to do is build a new London City Hall on a style like Brussels, Manchester or Leeds, but make it seveal times larger!
Zaki August 14th, 2005, 06:15 PM ^^ What are you talking about. The old London city hall is crap. The new one is so amazing, Its architecture is just incredible. It shows london isn't stuck in the past like many other european cities and is looking to the future.
*Sweetkisses* August 14th, 2005, 07:51 PM Thats funny because I dont think Ive ever seem the NYC city hall. LOL.Can someone post pictures of Londons new city hall?
hkskyline August 14th, 2005, 07:54 PM ^ I posted 2 photos in post #25.
AtlanticaC5 August 14th, 2005, 08:29 PM Brussels City Hall is very impressive! My vote goes to it
Valeroso August 14th, 2005, 11:20 PM 1. Brussels
Wonderful architecture! And it just clearly dominates the area immediately, esp with its giant dome/spire in the middle of it. It screams to me of town hall.
2. Philadelphia
The colour and the facade is just so beautiful also! I've always been a fan of this sort of architecture, with its collums and striking windows.
As for the others, I can't really rank any of them anymore. But if I were to comment, I'd say that London's town hall is really dissapointing as I don't think it represents its past, or its dominance anymore. The buildings really nice though, but I wouldn't go so far as to want it to be a town hall of such a great city.
Tokyo's one is just a typical skyscraper; though nice in design, I think (in complete contradiction to London's one) is too big to be a town hall. Or at least, I'd prefer town halls to scream out "HEY, I'M A TOWN HALL!" as opposed to "HEY, I'M A SKYSCRAPER!". But the designs nice. I once read that it was designed to look like a computer chip. |_|
Finally, Toronto! When I first saw this building in the Toronto skyline, I asked myself: "Toronto has a headquarters for the United Nations?" since it looks like such a United Nations sort of piece! Personally, I DESPISE concrete. I hate it with intensity. But for some reason, this time the turqoise windows and the concrete actually blend in well. And it actually does look abit like a town hall alas! (And keeps in tradition with Toronto's concrete nature :D)

prahsharp August 16th, 2005, 02:31 AM Like many others I was a bit disapointed by the London City hall. It's a really nice idea, wonderfull shape, but quite small, and will surely be outdated in 50 years, like Toronto looks a bit outdated already. But, perhaps, 500 years from now, if it survive's time, people will describe it as a fantastic piece of classic architecture.
sekula August 16th, 2005, 02:37 PM London....
Ellatur August 17th, 2005, 05:18 AM brussels!
ironchapman August 17th, 2005, 07:36 AM Philly, but Brussels looks like it's going to win.
Buffalo's (even though it's not on here) city hall is nice, too.
[Kees] August 17th, 2005, 11:36 AM Brussel!
Avatar August 17th, 2005, 12:09 PM Brussels
mdm_toronto August 19th, 2005, 05:22 PM if Toronto is unique and London the newer of the 5; there are hundred of "historic" city halls that looks similar to the Phily one -starting with Paris city hall- (or even Brussel for that matter although Brussel is quite grandiose) and the number of historic city halls that could stand the comparison with Brussel is huge... Out of the five I would then still vote for Brussel but more by elimination than choice.
*Sweetkisses* August 19th, 2005, 05:43 PM No offense but Torontos city hall looks like two concrete slabs. I think that Brussels has the best city hall. Its the most grand.
