I love Plaka!!! It may feel like a tourist magnet at first, but walking around a bit more makes one realize how traditional and authentic this place is. Great thread, Leafs :okay:

Am I the only one who thinks Plaka needs to be totally regenerated?
I think it is in a terrible condition in most parts.

Is there any plans of restoring it or is something already happening?

Actually many parts have been redeveloped/restored especially in the last few years...
It's going to take time ofcourse.

The restored bits are just magical. This is why I really hope all of it is restored.
It is really the only charming part of Athens, away from the typical modernist blocks in other areas.

George, Plaka IS already restored and that's why it has seen tremendous development over the last few years.
Crtisto, some pics you present are from Thission, not Plaka.
All in all, this is a spot that is under constant development and I am confident that with the new Acropolis museum on its doorsteps, Plaka will reach new heights.
Now that you've mentioned it, I may go to "Bairaktaris" to have some Souvlakis with pitta... :)

Not in my intentions but now that you've mentioned it, Bairaktaris is numero uno, frequented by many celebrities including politicians and famous for the practice of the culinary arts so to speak :D. Our Prime Minister Karamanlis goes there for sure. This guy has the walls of his restaurant covered with pictures with celebrities. But the food is also great. When you come to Athens don't miss it, although I promise you you will have your belly full for 48 hours after this experience...

I know, but it's close enough and has undergone nice redevelopments so I wanted to post.
