View Full Version : Roller coasters throughout the world
Obelixx August 10th, 2005, 12:00 PM On http://www.rcdb.com/tv.htm?continent=2 you can get information about stationary rollercoasters throughout the world. Transportable rollercoasters like those used on the Octoberfest in Munich are not in the list!
SE9 August 10th, 2005, 12:07 PM Ahh.. the best roller-coaster I've been on is on there: Colossus in Thorpe Park!
It has the most inversions (loops) of any roller-coaster in the world:

Home to some of the oldest rides in the World.
Grand National - A wooden Racing Coaster
The First Racing coaster in the world - and the double dip on the first drop is still pretty unique - this ride is one of my favourites in the UK. Built in 1935

Built in 1921, One of the Oldest wooden coasters in the world. Still pretty scary though!

Still a favourite, and very unique - although I'm always scared that the carraige will come out of the trough!

There are many more rides at blackpool - they have another wooden coaster called (inventively) the rollercoaster which opened in 1911 I think!! - although it's pretty much a kiddies ride by today's standards. There's the space invader - a dark rollercoaster - the wild mouse - a single car crazy cornering rollercoaster and other, non-roller rides such as valhalla (excellent) and ice-blast.
Definitley one of the premier white knuckle venues in the UK, defo worth a go although, surprisingly, there really is only one inversion in the whole park!!
Mr_ed2 September 28th, 2005, 06:36 PM ALTON TOWERS. UK
What I really love about this park, which I haven't seen to the same extent anywhere else, is the effort put into the themeing of each ride. A great touch is that as you pass through the queues for the rides (on most of the major ones anyway), you really get a feel through the ride, for example nemesis with it's rivers of blood running through the queing area. THe carraige whips right past you in a few places too, really adding to the experience.

Although this ride looks like a full-on thrill ride, it really isn't *scary* as such, just completeley and totally exhillirating. You really do feel like you are flying, especially at the front (worth queing for in all but the worst queue circumstances). My favourite ride in the park - even though I usually prefer
those rides that make you terrified!

Rita - Queen of speed
I didn't much like the look of this one- no inversions, no big drops, but boy when you're on it the accelration just does not stop coming! I was honestly nearly sick on this ride - and that would be a first for any ride I have ever been on! It's so fast!

I just looked at it now, WHOAH! I've never been to thorpe park, but I think I may be scheduling a visit sometime in the near future.....

Actually, White Cyclone is the world's 3rd longest Wooden Rollercoaster, behind these two, which are both at the same park.
Beast (Paramount's Kings Island, Ohio) - The ride itself has TWO lift hills and gets lost from the rest of civilization in a forest.

bnmaddict September 28th, 2005, 07:46 PM I'm quite a roller-coaster fan.
Here are some of the best coasters I've ridden, all from the same designer: B&M (hence "BnMaddict")
1. Favorite hyper coaster:
It's a tie between SILVER STAR (Europa park, Germany):
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/9918/silverstar203qg.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
... And Nitro (SFGAdv, NJ, USA):
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/3239/nitro78fx.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
2. Favorite steel looper:
Dragon Kahn (Port Aventura, Spain):
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/8800/dragonkhan254kg.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
3. Favorite launch coaster:
Hulk (Universal's Islands of Adventure, FL, USA)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/5803/incrediblehulk250wf.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
4. Favorite Floorless coaster:
WITHOUT ANY DOUBT -> SUPERMAN (Warner Bros Movie world, Spain)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/5494/superman327ki.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
^^ Only big floorless without a middle course brake-run (that means a lot!).
5. Favorite inverted coaster:
WITHOUT ANY DOUBT -> KATUN (Mirabilandia, Italy)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/5016/katun33fq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Another good contender:
- Dueling Dragons (Universal's Islands of Adventure, FL, USA)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/706/duelingdragons251kd.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
6. Favorite Mine train (Not a B&M, unfortunately):
Big Thunder Mountain (Disneyland Paris, France)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/3625/bigthundermountain260om.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
7. Favorite wooden coaster (Unfortunately, B&M havn't designed one of them, yet):
Tonnerre de Zeus (Parc Astérix, France)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/2269/tonnerre022zj.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
^^ Not very high, but it was considered the best wooden coaster in the world for years!
A few other good rides:
- Here's the twin of the Rock'n'roller coaster you'll find in the Disney studio park in Paris, except that this one is outdoor: Superman the ride (Walibi world, ex-"Six flags Holland", Netherland)
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/441/supermantheride29hk.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
- Montu (Busch Garden Tampa, FL, USA)

Scruffy88 November 5th, 2005, 06:22 AM BNMaddict- Those are fantastic pics. Im a coaster addict too and am so jealous that you got to go on so many world class coasters.
Glad you like Nitro, its my second favorite. Best coaster in the US in my oppinion is Superman: Ride of Steel in Six Flags New England. It has never disapointed before.

Republica November 15th, 2005, 03:35 AM Try this beast in the metro centre in the England!!
http://www.metroland.uk.com/parkmap.html
Its not very big at all but its in a shopping mall!
We really should get some bigger coasters in the Uk, i think were lagging behind.
A great and often forgotten rollercoaster is The Ultimate at lightwater valley:
http://www.onride.de/bilder/SB-UK-Tour/Lightwater/LWV02.jpg
http://www.amigasat.clara.co.uk/2005/lwv/lwv7.jpg
Its one of the longest in the world and was the longest up until 2000, its 1.6 miles long.
ProgHouseHead November 16th, 2005, 12:31 AM I rode Kingda Ka. Let me tell you, i've skydived, rock climbed in yosemite park, rode white water rapids in colorado, swam with sharks in australia, been on an african safari in lion terrirtory, and have walked alone in the south bronx at 3 am. And nothing, NOTHING, can come close to the sheer terror I experienced on that coaster. It is beyond worrds how scary that shit is. And im a coaster buff and none have scared me. But this coaster is something else. Jaysus!

But for giggles Here is a pic I took of Kinga Ka at Great Adventure. It was more intense than I thought it would be and im seasoned. I loved it still

BenL April 24th, 2006, 04:31 PM Some more pictures of Thorpe Park, which is becoming the UK's best park for thrillseekers:
Nemesis: Inferno - set around a volcano, reaching speeds of almost 50mph and designed by B&M, widely considered to be the best rollercoaster manufactuer:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/nemesis_inferno5.jpg
Probably enough pictures of Colossus.
Stealth: Europe's fastest rollercoaster, reaching 82mph in just 2.3 seconds. Top height: 205ft.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/stealth30.jpg
This one's quite wet:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/Tidal_Splash.jpg
The only one of its type outside of America, (with there being just one there). Over 100ft tall:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/slammer1.jpg
A big swing:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/rush1.jpg
And there's many more rides: www.thorpepark.com
They are likely to be getting another large rollercoaster for 2008. Rumours suggest this will either being a "Flying coaster" - like AIR or Tatsu, a Hyper coaster, like the Pepsi Max Big One, a Floorless Coaster, like Kraken or a wooden coaster.
NothingBetterToDo April 24th, 2006, 06:09 PM Thorpe Park is fast catching up with Alton Towers as the UK's capital of white knuckle rides. But they are also running out of space, it already looks crowded with rides.....especially compared to Alton Towers with its sprawling grounds (its so big it has its own big valley....the quickest way to cross it is by the cable cars :):);) )
Stealth is just AMAZING.....the speed, the height and the sheer terror of it........i just cant imagine what Kinga Ka is like (its more than twice the height of Stealth). Every other ride seemed boring after going on it
But Nemisis Inferno is exhilarating......another great ride
And collossus is fantastic too.......the last loops are painstaking slow.......which is great because you always feel on the verge of falling out of your seat.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/slammer1.jpg
^^ and this thing...............geeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzz.............dont go on this if you have heart trouble, bowl trouble........basically and type of medical condition.......because you will DIE........its bloody terrifying (but INCREDIBLE at the same time :) ;) )
JDRS April 24th, 2006, 06:42 PM Thorpe Park has really expanded enormously over the past few years and has some brilliant rides - the only one I haven't tried is Stealth. Does anyone know what they plan to build next at Thorpe Park, I'm sure they could demolish that crappy farm and replace it with some interesting rides :D
BenL April 25th, 2006, 12:43 AM The farm is listed so can't be destroyed and also it's too near to Thorpe village to build any exciting rides. It also gives something for younger kids, who frankly haven't got much to do.
Next year, the Flying Fish, a powered Mack coaster, which was pretty popular and removed for Stealth will return. An X: No Way Out retheme is rumoured, which should be good and there's a chance of a Lake show and another flat ride (spinning ride like Slammer or Vortex).
It will be a pretty uneventual year in comparison with the park resting on the laurels of Stealth - 2008, as stated above, will bring a rollercoaster on the scale of Nemesis: Inferno, although it's rumoured to be bigger. Whilst the park produced a Mi- Term Development Plan in 2003, it's only been reasonably accurate, and I think we can only trust its information up to 2008.
Chessington will be getting a Safari Park and hotel next year.
Thorpe is an old quarry, infilled with water and owns all the water around the park. So there is in fact loads of land to expand onto as shown by this map:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/infill.jpg
The 2008 coaster will go around the "I" area which is being infilled, inside Logger's Leap. The process will be time-consuming and expensive but will leave the park with a large area to play around with. It also has the advantage of far less strict planning controls than Alton Towers - which must keep rides below the tree height of around 60ft, hence why Nemesis is in a pit and there are also noise controls due to several complaining local residents.
Thorpe gets on far better with the locals and is allowed to build rides up to 100ft, although with the 205ft Stealth being allowed, we may see that restriction increased.
Scruffy88 May 4th, 2006, 04:23 AM Thats a cool little battle between parks in england with alton towers and thorpe park. in the states, we have a 3 way war for dominance between Cedar Point in Ohio, Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, and Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.
BenL May 4th, 2006, 08:49 PM It's kind of different: In America, SF MM has something close to a monopoly on California for thrillseekers, with Knott's being the only really competitor. Cedar Park serves the centre, whilst Great Adventure serves New York and some surrounding states. Magic Mountain and Great Adventure aren't really in direct competition as they are both owned by the same company - I think Six Flags wants to keep them at a similar level. Cedar Park is in competition, and has a monopoly for its Ohio region and owns Knott's - but most Americans aren't going to travel across the country for one theme park (I'd guess) and so the companies have just got to keep their parks at a certain level.
With the exception of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Tussaud's has a monopoly on the biggest parks in Britain. Alton Towers and Thorpe Park (and Chessington) are owned by the same parent company. When Tussaud's aquired Thorpe Park in 1998 they realised something would have to be done - they had Chessington and Thorpe Park a 20 minute drive from one another and neither park was huge. So they decided to specialise each park.
Chessington went from being the Alton Towers of the South (providing rides for all the family; thrillseekers, "families" to young kids, to just specialising in the latter two categories whilst Thorpe Park, previously just specialising in the latter two categories, decided to specialise on thrill seekers.
It was a pretty basic park in 1998 and so it has had a huge amount of investment to bring it up to a certain level. Now it is probably the best park for thrillseekers in the country - but it is not a better park than Alton Towers overall and is a lot smaller. I believe that with the 2008 coaster (or 2009 coaster as it may be), things will slow down a bit now Tussaud's are comfortable with the level the park has reached, whilst Alton Towers is getting ready for a huge wave of investment.

Scruffy88 May 5th, 2006, 09:18 AM Thanks Ben, I found that fascinating. Im really into the evolution of theme parks and ofcourse thrill rides. Although Six Flags owns both Magic Mountain and great Adventure there is tons of rivalry between the parks. If anything just amongst the fans. Its almost like footing for your favorite sports team. There are no shortages of theme parks in America, MM competes with Disney, and Knotts in the LA area, but up north in San Fran, there are 2 more major parks. And Ohio might just be the most cutthroat place for theme parks and has always been known for holding records of most kinds. These are split between Cedar Point, Paramounts Kings Island, and Gaeuga Lake which briefly was owned by Six Flags.
