View Full Version : The First Building That Got You Interested in Skyscrapers?
Travis007 August 10th, 2005, 10:55 PM Mines a bit weird, when I was visiting NYC a few years ago I stayed in my cousin's apartment at the Confucius Plaza apartments in Chinatown. It was about 460ft. tall, it doesn't stand out at all in NYC's huge skyline but it towers over Chinatown. The building isn't anything special architectural wise and looks very dull and bland now that I know more about skyscrapers. Back then I didn't know anything about skyscrapers, I used to call the Chrysler Building, the ESB. I didn't care about it when I was in NYC, I started to care about it when I got back home to Toronto and I was bored so I typed in "Confucius Plaza NYC" on google, and it directed me to Emporis (back then it was skyscrapers.com). Yeah and I got hooked on that site and started to really get interested in skyscrapers.

ch1le August 10th, 2005, 11:51 PM went to Vilnius beliving that Tallinn was the centre of the earth (well.. atleast Baltics :D), and seeing they created a kick ass skyline on the place that was a hamburger stand 2 years ago really made me dig deep in the internet to find out more about scrapers planned in my city to reclaim the title :D One thing lead to another and here i am
NothingBetterToDo August 11th, 2005, 02:28 AM Mine was 1 Canada Square at Canary Wharf. When its was by itself and not surrounded by other tall buildings.
From where i used to live i could see it all the time (although from a distance). And we used to call it "the Pencil point" (silly nickname i know) :):)

spotila August 11th, 2005, 03:03 AM Hmmm good question. When I was little I remember I read a book about a family travelling from London to America. It had pictures in it, and as they flew into New York you could see lower Manhatten (this was made before the WTC was built). There was also a great picture of just the ESB, it looked awesome. I think that's probably what triggered my love of skyscrapers.
I also remember being amazed by Tower42 in the 1978 edition of Guiness Book of Records :D
Imperfect Ending August 11th, 2005, 03:12 AM Its more like a game that got me interested... and the game is Simcity3000
Zissou August 11th, 2005, 04:35 AM The skyscraper that first got me interested was the Ren Cen in Detroit. I think mostly because its the tallest in the city. I dont like the building as much as I used to probably because Ive seen more skyscrapers and I know now what looks good and what doesnt. GM has made improvements though.

CrazyCanuck August 12th, 2005, 05:11 AM I live in T.O and i used to be in awe of the CN tower and its massive height, that and the statue of Liberty. I used to think that they were the same size because I had never seen teh statue before.

TalB August 12th, 2005, 05:51 PM Although Haifa and Tel Aviv had skyscrapers when I was in Israel for a few years after being born, it was NYC that got my interested in skyscrapers, especially the Twins.
RafflesCity August 12th, 2005, 06:18 PM I really got into SKYSCRAPERS after 9-11.
But I did have a phase in the 80s when I was really into tall hotels, especially those with tacked on revolving restaurants on top
Brian21 August 12th, 2005, 06:41 PM mine was the big Twins NY
Erezl8 August 12th, 2005, 07:08 PM althghou i have never see them.... :hahaha:
newyorkrunaway1 August 13th, 2005, 08:30 AM mine was the city of NY. a lot of poeple start with NY
TheOingoBoingoBandit August 13th, 2005, 08:58 PM One Canada Square (aka Canary Wharf and Tower 42 (I love the way the base is smaller and you can stand right underneath the tower.
The buildings that got me interested in architecture was Vauxhall Cross (home of MI6), the Llyod's Building and the London Docklands.
Pengui August 14th, 2005, 09:54 AM That's a few Kuala Lumpur skyscrapers that got me hooked in 2001. Although I went through a few skyscraper cities before, I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the tall buildings.
Here are the two main culprits ;-)
(2001 shot)
http://membres.lycos.fr/pengui/tour/kuala-menara1.jpg
Menara Telekom got my interest as I saw it from KL tower and it looked so tall and mysterious in the haze. It can actually be seen from many places in KL but at that time, no one was able to tell me what it was. So I googled "Kuala lumpur skyscrapers" to solve the mystery, and found skyscrapers.com and the now defunct worldskyscrapers forum.
The second one that got my long term interest is Berjaya Time Square.
http://membres.lycos.fr/pengui/ssc/050320_kl_tower05.jpg
Here you see it from KL tower in 2005 ;-)
But in 2001 it was an unfinished empty and sinister concrete shell looming over my hotel (the short yellowish tower that you can see below Time Square's right tower - at that time it was a Novotel but it's not anymore). It was so amazingly gigantic and it beared the project name "Berjaya Starhill" that made me wonder what and why and when, etc ^^
Although the building structure was finished in 2001, it took three more years for it to resume, and now it's a great monstrously oversized shopping mall with an excellent hotel and the crazy indoor roller coaster ^^
Of course, Petronas Towers did contribute to my interest as well, and I keep thinking they are the most beautiful towers in the world and one of the most amazing monuments ever built (and few skyscrapers can claim the title of monuments ;-) ).

It's an ok building, but you have to remember that London was a strictly low to mid-rise city until the 1990's. 7 of the 10 tallest buildest buildings in London have been built in the last five years, so in the 60's and 70's Centre point was a revelation. Not only was it tall, but it was actually not too bad. The majority of the tall buildings built in London pre-1990 were complete rubbish. The designer (Richard Seifert) more or less invented decent tall building design in london, also being responsible for the Tolworth Tower and Tower 42.
p.s. The blobs on the right-hand side of the tower are people abseiling down it. I came across this by chance, but I wish I'd known about it in advance., would love to have had a go
spotila August 15th, 2005, 08:50 AM probably both the empire state and tower42
ignoramus August 15th, 2005, 08:57 AM The New York City World Trade Center. They just simply stood out in the NYC skyline because they are just so tall and big... And the fact that they are featured in almost any American movie.........................................
redstar August 15th, 2005, 10:23 AM Mine was the almighty Rialto Towers in Melbourne after my trip to Melbourne in 2001. I wanted to find out more about them when i got back home, and so google led me to this.....
New Jack City August 15th, 2005, 05:32 PM Growing up in NYC as a kid I was always fascinated by skyscrapers, the Empire State, Chrysler and the Twin Towers as we called them, were basically the only ones I could name. For some reason I would always stare at the skyline in amazement. After 9/11, I wanted to see more and learn more about the World Trade Center, leading me to skyscraper sites like these and I got into it all after that.
AzN8oi August 16th, 2005, 02:08 AM US Bank Tower AKA Library Tower AKA "Birthday Cake Building" for my own amusement when I was 10.

Passing by at 2 in the morning is magical when the offices are barely lit up and the top is prominent.
Actually, I just realized what made me interested in skyscrapers... The movie "Independence Day" when aliens blew up ESB and Library Tower. That girl was right, "It's so beautiful..." *bam dead*
I hope Nightfly releases this..

Islander September 18th, 2005, 03:41 AM I liked skyscrapers for as long as I remember. When I was about four, my mom and sister took me up to one of the top floors of 1 World Trade Center (where Windows on the World was). I think that's the view that really sealed my interest in skyscrapers, because I was COMPLETELY awe-struck. If there hadn't been a floor, my jaw would have dropped 1,350 feet straight to the ground.
Rapid September 18th, 2005, 05:35 AM This building when it was only proposed:

Drunkill September 18th, 2005, 11:05 AM The Rialto, Melbourne, tallest scraper in Australia for some time. But i found these forums while on work experiance with a graphic designer, seeming his office was in a scraper, we had a great veiw of all the other scrapers, so he showed my scraperpage, when i got home and googled it, i found this, and found an Aussie section, and Melbourne section, i've been here ever since.
snoopy September 22nd, 2005, 02:40 AM it was the bank of china building in hong kong.. i remember as a child i would always be sketching it and finding pictures of it... i guess even as a child it had great influences on me and STILL has not lost its special place in my heart.... (also.. cn tower, but i guess that is not a building per se)

JuanPaulo September 22nd, 2005, 03:21 AM Mine is the twin towers of the World Trade Center in NY. When I first saw them at age 8, I was madly in love with skyscrapers and knew at the same moment that I will grow to be a skyscraper builder.
It really hurts to know they are not there anymore :(
Azn_chi_boi September 22nd, 2005, 03:36 AM Can't believe no one's is Sears Tower. Made me drop my jaw in awe when I was a kid.
mine is also Sears Tower too... especially in 1996, when I heard another country have the world tallest building beside the US...
CULWULLA September 22nd, 2005, 04:04 AM Empire state building. when i was a kid and saw the King Kong movie, i couldnt believe there was a bldg 102 storeys high! when sydney's tallest when i was a kid 40 storeys..
Sitback September 22nd, 2005, 11:19 PM One Canada Square. London.
It used to look so huge when it was on it's own, isolated. We used to drive past it when I was a kid and I'd just stare at it until it vanished out of the horizon or it's view got obscured.
DGM September 23rd, 2005, 07:12 AM I first became interested in skyscrapers when i visited the courthouse in miami where my mother worked. It's kind of ugly and stands only 110m tall. But it was the first tall building i ever visited. I was even more impressed by the WTC but I visited it when I was older.
http://www.feyerabend.com/media/2003/courthouse/panel_M.jpg
DamienK September 23rd, 2005, 07:44 AM There was no one building that got me interested, it was looking at a 2 page spread of tall structures of the world in a book while shopping that got me intrigued. But at that time I heard about the Petronas Towers nearing completion and that was the first building I began researching online.
ƒƒ September 23rd, 2005, 02:09 PM Boerentoren, Antwerp, the first skyscraper of the European continent, 97m tall, 1932:

But also the left one, Cathedral of Our Lady, in my opinion the most beautiful building in the world, largest and tallest gothic church in the Benelux.
