This has been posted before but a long time ago and a lot of these phases are U/C now. A lot of these renders have not been seen before.

In 2003, following a successful bid for European funding status, a Masterplan was developed for Blackpool's Resort Core. A team led by consultants, Jerde and EDAW, proposed a vision of radical, comprehensive change that retains the historic form and pattern of land use, builds on the key assets of the Tower, Pleasure Beach and Winter Gardens, emphasises the seafront and increases the town's capacity to accommodate car, coach, train and air travel into the resort. It has been put forward in the certain knowledge that success will come only if there is a commitment from all who live and work in Blackpool to a new culture of quality. The proposals are based on the assumption that visitor numbers will reach 20 million per year, that there are seasonal peaks but these will become less pronounced as the resort develops year round economic activity.

The Masterplan introduces a strategy to bring nature into the heart of the town. New gateways will transform first impressions and lift investor confidence. The Illuminations are retained but spread throughout the resort using a mixture of the traditional and hi-tech to introduce drama and spectacle along the Promenade. A number of high capacity car parks will peel off traffic as it enters the town, delivering visitors and residents to their preferred destinations, minimising internal traffic volumes. Within the town, there is sustainable travel, based on walking and public transport, notably a fully modernised tram which will connect North Station and the town centre to the airport, and North Beach to the central seafront attractions and hotels in South Beach. In parallel to the revitalisation of the resort core, there is a firm intention to spread the benefits of regeneration to the inner residential neighbourhoods and the traditional holiday areas.

They look very impressive, if all of it can't be done I hope at least some of the project will be completed.

LOL....as things stand, id rather have all my fingernails pulled out and dipped in lemon juice than spend a day in that no class shithole.

It really does sum up the British seaside resort....tacky, 3rd rate, stuck in the 1950's hellholes.

Yes, but as Zim would say: Its got trams so it must be one of the best cities in the UK!!!

This is superb, some would argue (as its what the British are good at) that we dont want this prefabricated, superficial Vegas style areas, but its a hell of a lot better than the Blackpool and sea side attractions we have now?!!

What do we have, Donkeys and silly sex gift shops?? Its about bloody time we had a little more class for our seaside areas.. Morecambe took a different approach, it just closed everything down.. how quaint.

But Blackpool, these are very exciting plans, so classy, shiny and most of all appealing..Whilst we'll never really have the weather for such a tourism industry in this niche, I think it will be only a good thing...

I did think there was meant to be taller buildings in this new scheme? Yet I'm not seeing anything on here.. I do hope it leads to Blackpool getting some towers, maybe not full-out Vegas style towers but just something a little more modest but just as impressive, full o lights.. let half the peninsula of the north be able to point out the fossil-fuel abuser of the Uk on a clear night :P

As far as I'm aware, its still there, but under the plans it will be demolished.

I like it all.

Which parts are UC?
The promenade reconstruction, the central gateway, and one other part.

I'm genuinely really impressed, i went to skegness last weekend with the boyfriend and it was an awful place full of prety awful tourists, and judging by their long faces they were having a poopy time as well, cute model village though. We joked that there was no way we were going to blackpool if it was anything similar, so it was a nice surprise to see that these plans had been drawn up. i just hope that they don't get watered down too much and become mundane drivel. The tower is pretty cool, build this lot around it and i'll visit happily.

Nice glossy renders and the schemes look good if completed, although I notice an absence of tall buildings which is a shame. How many of the big casinos the government are planning will be built in Blackpool? Are they getting 1?

^^1 was the origional idea after Tessa Jowell announced that there would only be one casino. However Blackpool is an exception because they have a more sophisticated plan for the whole thing than other cities wanting casino's, so it looks like it may get permission to have 3 to start with and more to follow after the trial period :)

If you're looking to do a write-up for Skyscrapernews try giving ReBlackpool a call. They are the newly established Urban Regeneration Company charged with the implementation of the masterplan.

Doug Garrett, the new chief executive only started work in the last two weeks or so, and he looks hungry for publicity. I'm sure he will be willing to do a telephone interview with you (unless you fancy a day trip to Lancashire that is). They have still not got their website online, but you can call them on 1253 477 477

Looks good

i like how they say "success will come only if there is a commitment from all who live and work in Blackpool to a new culture of quality"

too right blackpool needs some class injected into it.

Not all Uk seaside resorts are stuck in the past...Brighton for instance is fantastic....its like Camden "on sea" :):)

It doesn't matter what they do to change Blackpool, it will always now be associated with stag and hen parties and whole armies of pissed up lager louts and slappers out on the razz. It's pretty depressing really..... the old phrase "icing the turd" springs to mind .....
