Thais celebrate royal birthday
OVER 60 Thais took part in a football tournament to celebrate the 73rd birthday of Thai Queen Sirikit at the Al Ahli Club yesterday.
The event was sponsored by the Royal Thai Embassy encouraging unity amongst the Thai community in Bahrain.
The queen's birthday is also celebrated as Mother's Day in Thailand.
Earlier over 70 Thais visited the embassy in Zinj to pay their respects to Queen Sirikit and attended a luncheon hosted by Thai Ambassador Widhya Bhoolsuwan.
Embassy officials also visited Thai prisoners in Bahrain and donated basic necessities, such as soap and shampoo, reflecting the compassion and devotion shown by the queen to the Thai people.
Mr Bhoolsuwan said King Bhumibhol and Queen Sirikit are well-loved and respected by the Thai people for their tireless devotion and dedication in improving the lives of their people.
"They have initiated many projects that helped address various social problems such as offering training facilities and equipment to farmers to grow commercial crops instead of opium thus arresting the drugs problem," he said.
"Queen Sirikit also championed the revival of traditional Thai handicraft and encouraged the passion and pride for Thai Silk which is renowned worldwide.
