Toronto's northwestern suburb of Brampton is a little "South Asia" because of South Asian population there. That's why this temple is located at the northwestern edge of Toronto. Hindu temples are very good to visit, especially with their interiors! I have actually witnessed a ritual during lunchtime, and it was sickkk!!! Very awesome!!!

Not sure - I've seen it from the MRT on EW line between expo and cityhall. Its next to a chinese temple. I think its Geylang.
RafflesCity February 25th, 2009, 02:41 AM It seems to me that there are several instances of Indian temples located beside Chinese temples here. Theres another example at Waterloo street in the Bugis area.
Most of the Indian temples located in the city centre are usually the more historical ones, but I noted that the design more or less retains the same characteristics whether the temple is new or built a long time ago.
Borisot May 12th, 2009, 09:53 AM Beautiful temples but strange religion-beliefs
HUH strange religion? You sound very ignorant and judgemental of other cultures. Indian culture has the oldest continuous civilization in the world, preceding any Western culture or religion. Is it any stranger than Christianity with all their saints and icons, or Islam with all kinds of contradictions, or Judaism? which are all from the same Abrahamic religion with a jealous god that punishes you and condem you? Eventho I'm not Hindu myself but find it very interesting and different, but no stranger than any other religious practices.
Borisot May 12th, 2009, 10:11 AM I was just at this BAPS temple today, and I had been there a couple times before and I find it every time is just as amazing. The craftmanship and the detail works that went into it is so incredibly rich. In most Western culture, curtainly in the U.S., they don't built their churches at this level of refinement anymore. That's because no's no one capable of doing architectural carving and sculpting at that level of skill anymore. They used to do that here as late as the 1930's, for example like some government buildings in D.C. like the Supreme Court.
My question is does anyone know how much it costs to build the Chicago BAPS temple complex? I read that the new temple in Lilburn, GA. costs about $19 million, and that one is even larger than this one, but of course things are cheaper in Georgia than in Chicago.

The BAPS temple architecture is from the western state of Gujarat. They assemble these temples like a jigsaw puzzle, from parts that are finished and shipped from India.
Indian stonemasons, called shilpi are finally finding work this way because even in India very few stone temples get built. Infact, the trade has picked up in recent years after a very long time. Most of northern and Western India had been ruled by muslims, and then the British, so this kind of architecture had virtually disappeared.
Only after recent economic boom, a kind of "hindu revival" is taking place, and the neo-rich are looking to "rediscover their heritage", so to speak.

OakRidge May 31st, 2009, 04:11 AM In most Western culture, curtainly in the U.S., they don't built their churches at this level of refinement anymore. That's because no's no one capable of doing architectural carving and sculpting at that level of skill anymore. They used to do that here as late as the 1930's, for example like some government buildings in D.C. like the Supreme Court.
You can still find quite a few in the United States who are capable of doing architectural carving and sculpting at that level of skill.

I know, its actually a house of some sort.

Yeah, someone decided to build his oriental fantasy home.
Which explains its "eclectic" architecture. The shikhar is North Indian style, the big arch seems to be taken from a buddhist cave, and other stuff seems to be copied from Cambodian temples.
