Duddeston station...shit, I used to catch the train from there back in 1992 when it looked worse! I worked nearby and caught the train to Wolverhampton every day....ah memories.

Martin G
August 17th, 2005, 01:51 PM
It can't have looked worse in 1992 cos I remember stopping there in 1993 and that redundant island platform (formerly 3/4) didn't have half as much greenery sprouting from it as it does in these pictures - in fact you could still see all the concrete platform surfaces back then!

My memories of it looking its best go back to 1983 when - though I never had a camera at the time - back then all four platforms were still operational, the carriage sheds were still open, as was the train shed (in the above picture), there were shunters idling in the sidings, as were empty carriages being moved about....there was still overhead line equipment over all the tracks, leading to the goods depot near Curzon Street and the two-level viaduct that ran alongside the main passenger route......all in all a complete hive of activity.....

This pic below shows what it looked like back in 1985.....

I enjoy these types of threads.I've spent the last couple of weeks discovering the other side of Seville.I'm not sure but there must more than five thousand blocks.A real concrete maze with a couple of shanty towns thrown in;quite large settlements of up to 200 people of all ages living in lamentable conditions.

I think when grafitti is done properly with pretty patterns and interesting pictures then it can look amazing...it's just that there's too much territorial scribble or scally grafitti around that gives it a bad image (i.e. Stacy sucks d***, etc).

I believe the territorial scribble is called 'tagging' - though 'territorial scribble' is a better description of it.
Graffiti artists hate it when people call tagging graffiti because it blurs the line between art (albeit illegal art) and talentless scrawling on the walls.

My nan's old estate Hawkeseley south Birmingham, quite white, quite ruff and the only taxi's I got back there refused to drop me all the way in although Castle Pool is much worse and you are more likely to get hassle, I only ever passed through by bus (CP). It is right on the outskirts of south Brum and there are a few great city centre skyline pics from a hill in this area. A lot of respect for the elderly here though (unusually).

Last time I walked through Northfield highstreet was after a funeral, I witnessed a robbery in a charity shop (the guy tried to fill a bin liner with clothes), I took a walk arond the back of the high street and saw a road full of vacated flats with smashed windows, curtains flowing in the breeze, boarded up doors and no one around. When I looked at the news the next day a pensioner had been robbed of his car from a car park on the high street in the daylight only minutes after I left, he died as a reult of the fight, other than that I only ever drive through the place, massive development due I believe? ex S.A.S. were hired to run undercover surveilance to curb the heroin dealers and anti social behaviour that was making peoples lives a missery in Northfield. Longbridge was partly done up a while ago but windows seem to be smashed again... can't change the people.

So it's not got any worse then?

MarcusValhalla

The problem with Northfield is that there is a high concentration of the sort of people who never, ever, ever think about what they are doing or the effect that it has on others, ie it's rammed with chavs. I don't know if you can teach people to respect themselves, each other or their environment, but they need to do something because the next generation are going to be a total social nightmare. And I don't think that being poor and/or underpriviledged is an excuse either!

Biosonic
September 19th, 2005, 12:14 PM
Northfield's not that bad! You must've happend on a bad day EK.

Northfield is undergoing quite a change with the bypass under construction (that explains the derelict flats ect EK) - that will take a couple of years and there should be some improvement after that.

Then the works will move down the road for the Selly Oak bypass...

As for LOngbridge - it's more of a ghost town now. Unemployment in Longbridge & Northfield is quite high as a result of MG Rover's demise. That said construction should start on the new Longbridge business park, and they should be pulling down all the empty maisonettes soon. Longbridge will become a new town before long. :)

I spent the first year of my life in Bell Lane, my recent experience was from one day, the only other times I visit NF is when I am passing through the high street by car, any news I hear of North Field (West) is to do with the fight against crime, there have been several initiatives to tackle the problems and so maybe they are working? I wouldn't know, at one time the area had one of the highest car crime rates in England although these figures shift like sand from one place to the next.

This was one of many surveys a couple of years ago but highlights residents disatisfaction with their environment: http://www.aviva.com/avivainvestor/index.asp?PageID=2&year=2002&NewsID=1267&filter=
