(英文应为Hanfuk/Haanfuk,"服"为入声.)

Hanfu (TC: 漢服; SC: 汉服; pinyin: hΰnfϊ;; literally "Clothing of the Han people") refers to the pre-17th century traditional clothing of the Han Chinese, the predominant ethnic group of China.

Hanfu encompasses all types of traditional clothing worn by the Han Chinese ethnic group. As such, it has a history as long as the history of the Han Chinese people. Hanfu was eliminated by Manchu invaders by force in the 17th century, and is largely unknown in China today, except among a small but vocal group of people advocating the revival of Hanfu as a Chinese national costume.

History of Hanfu
According to Chinese tradition, Hanfu can be keith traced back to the Yellow Emperor, a great sage king of ancient China whom legend says ruled in the 27th century BC. Hanfu itself has a recorded history of more than 3000 years. It was worn by Han Chinese people from the semi-legendary Xia Dynasty (c. 21st century BC - 16th century BC) all the way to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The traditional dress of many Asian countries have been influenced by Hanfu, especially those of Japan and Korea.

Hanfu was regarded by Han Chinese as a very important part of their culture. The wearing of appropriate styles of Hanfu was an important part of courteous refined behaviour. Confucius considered Hanfu a very important part of Chinese ceremony and ritual and many of his quotations contain references to Hanfu.

The disappearance of Hanfu

Hanfu disappeared at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The Qing Dynasty was founded not by Han Chinese who form the overwhelming majority of the population of China proper, but by the Manchus. Taking advantage of the political instability and frequent popular rebellions convulsing China, the highly organized military forces of the Manchus swept into the Ming capital of Beijing in 1644 (which itself had earlier fallen to rebel forces under Li Zicheng), and formed the Qing Dynasty.

The Manchus foresaw that they would have great difficulty ruling the Han Chinese, who outnumbered them vastly and had a more sophisticated culture. Soon after the takeover of China proper, the Manchus forced the Han Chinese men to adopt Manchu hairstyle (the braid) and Manchu-style clothing.(Qipao and Tangzhuang)
There was enormous resistance to these policies, especially against the braid, which required shaving the entire top front half of the head. (Chinese traditional dictated that removing hair was against filial piety because one received one's hair from one's parents.) Popular uprisings flaired up immediately, but those were put down brutally. Up to 30 to 50 million Han Chinese people may have perished in total as a result of the Manchu invasion and conquest. Enforcement of the policies was swift, brutal, and effective. Hanfu was replaced by Manchu-style clothing. Hanfu was still permited for women, however without the traditional support of the palace, women started replacing their hanfu clothing with styles that were influenced by the imperial court and Hanfu was completly gone within a century of Qing rule.

After the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, Manchu dress and the braid disappeared quickly in favour of western-style dress. Today most Han Chinese wear western-style clothing, and Han Chinese clothing is largely unknown. Recent attempts by Hanfu advocates in China to wear Hanfu outdoors have provoked curious reactions from onlookers, many of them mistaking Hanfu for Japanese dress.

However, there is a small but vocal movement in China to revive Han Chinese clothing as a Chinese national custom.

Qipao and Tangzhuang(IMO, they are beautiful.)

although usually regarded as traditional Chinese clothing, are not regarded as Hanfu by advocates of Hanfu revival. This is because these were introduced by the Manchus, whom revival advocates accuse of having stamped out Hanfu in the first place. Qipao and Tangzhuang are also relatively recent clothing styles, and cannot represent the entire history of Chinese clothing.

Many traditional costumes of Asian countries, such as the kimono in Japan, along with the traditional dresses Korean Hanbok and Vietnamese ao dai, are derived from Hanfu and have the same style as Hanfu. In contrast to China, Japanese and Korean traditional dress have been preserved over the centuries, and are close to what pre-Manchu Hanfu looked like.

Description of Hanfu

Shenyi is a kind of full-length, one-piece robe which links the Yi and Chang together to wrap up the body. It is cut separately but sewn together. Shenyi was named because when it was worn "the body was deeply wrapped up".

Parts of Shenyi:

Variations of Hanfu in different dynasties

Legend
According to legend, the first ruler of the Chinese nation and the ancestor of the Chinese people is an immemorial sage king called the Yellow Emperor. According to traditional reckoning, he unified the North China Plain in 2697 BC. Legends say that under his rule, China was a prosperous and powerful nation with stable politics and advanced culture. Many cultural and technological inventions are attributed to his reign, such as the Chinese written language, methods of agriculture, music, the Chinese calendar and so on. The Yellow Emperor's imperial consort, Leozu [Su], was said to be the first person to know how to raise silkworms and make silk from the silkworm cocoon, from which Hanfu was woven. Thus the Chinese Hanfu was invented. Because Leizu had provided China with beautiful silk and Hanfu, she is often revered as the female ancestor of the Chinese people, and respectfully addressed with the title of Xianchan since the Western Zhou Dynasty.

Western Zhou Dynasty
The Western Zhou Dynasty (11th century BC - 711 ), established under a feudal system, consolidated the empire by a strict social class system and formulated a set of extremely exhaustive and thorough etiquette to standardize society and stabilize the country. The different styles of Hanfu worn symbolized each person's social class. As Hanfu was one of the cornerstones of the political foundation, stipulations were very strict.

Zhou Dynasty Hanfu followed the form and style of the Shang Dynasty, with a few changes. The style was slightly looser compared with the Shang Dynasty. There were two kinds of sleeve styles: broad and narrow. The collar were crossed and tied to the right, known as "Jiaoling Youren". The Yi had no buttons but instead had a sash tied around the waist for closure. Sometimes people also hung ornamental decorations made of jade on the waist sash as well. The length of skirts and trousers varied from reaching the knees to reaching the ground.

My opinion:

I am only introducing one kind of national clothing, I do not want
to publicize the Han chauvinism and instigate nationality hatred .
In my opinion, China's various nationalities should the equal in a friendly way ,we should be united.
I oppose the Han chauvinism!!

Hanfu is Han Chinese's national clothing,
"Qipao and Tangzhuang" are the Manchu nationality clothing.
But the Han Chinese and Manchus both are Chinese! Therefore Hanfu may do with "Qipao and Tangzhuang" at the same time for China's traditional clothing coexists.
Certainly, the Han Chinese also wear on the "Qipao and Tangzhuang", this is their freedom.

Don't need to restore Hanfu Comprehensively.
The Han Chinese may treat Hanfu like the Japanese and Korean treating their national clothing :
Wearing the western clothing in the daily life.
Putting on the Korean Hanbok and Japanese Kimono in the holiday and at significant celebration & ceremony .

The Influences Of Hanfu
Due to the length of its history and China's overwhelming cultural influence on the region, Hanfu has significantly shaped the styles of traditional costumes of some Asian countries.
Korea Hanbok and Japanese Kimono, they have the unique style , have some differences from Hanfu. But they had been influenced by Hanfu. These clothings have common feature: Youren and wide sleeve.
Some people in China today also mistake Hanfu for Korean Hanbok and Japanese Kimono.

Haha.
You thought Hanfu looks like the bathrobe, possibly is because it has
this character:“Jiaoling Youren( "Crossed collars, tying to the right.") This is the standard collar style of hanfu.
It is also the character of Japanese Kimono and some Korean Hanbok.
Why don't you say they also are the bathrobes? :bash: :bash:

I don't know which national people had invented the bathrobe.Maybe bathrobe and these far east clothings have some kind of relation.

Korean Hanboks are not "bathrobes", because we wear pants. Many styles do have "crossed collars". Koreans used to tie it to the left until Tang Dynasty, then Koreans started to tie it to the right. It is considered to be an influence from Hanfu during the times.

You're overreacting, because I wasn't offended by your post in any way, nor was my post intended as a rebuttal against such an offence. I was just trying to be informative. I enjoy informative disucssions as long as they are informative and stay within a line of mutual respect. Kc3000 is one of the few who go over the line and make very insulting and offensive statements.

That guy with the sword, he is really using the bathrobe he bought from some shop to pose as hanfu. I know that because bathrobes do not extend all the way to the floor.

Bathrobes must have come from Japan, since hanfu is no longer used in China since 1644.

Hanfu revival is a great thing, but it needs to adapt to modern lifestyle and hairdo (for some reasons, i think that hanfu doesn't go well with short haircut of men today).

Most of the hanfu shown here are aristocrat clothing, and few people here live like one.

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/607.jpg

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/620.jpg

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/624.jpg

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/626.jpg

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/627.jpg

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/631.jpg

http://bbsimages.military.china.com/1011/2006/3/25/633.jpg

I find 旗袍 Qipao to be more "modern" and sexy, but 漢服 Hanfu is more elegant and classy. I believe both should be preserved and promoted, they can be worn for different occasions.

who can say for sure, the modern day qipao are not one type of hanfu.
I am sure and many people with an understanding of Chinese culture are sure too.
Han stands for Han Chinese and Qi stands for Manchu Chinese. They are totally different ethnics with the same citizenship. How could a Qi dressing is part of Han dressing?
It is safer to say Kimono and Hanbok are more similar to Hanfu than Qipao.

The title says "Hanfu for Han Chinese" not "Chinese clothing" so your pics are misleading. A foreigner or whoever interested in Hanfu comes and sees your photos will think these are Hanfu but obviously they are not. And you know they are not either.

China has 56 nationalities,Han is the majority consisting of 92% of the chinese population! But now, everyone thinks cheongsam is Han chinese's traditonal dress, that is not right,ok,let's see the true traditional dress of han chinese, han chinese call their traditional dress hanfu, which lasted for 4700years in china but disapeared 300 years ago ,becuz manchu invaded china and forbidden han to wear hanfu!!!Japanese and Korean's traditional dress came from Hanfu:banana:

If you are aware that Japanese clothing evolved from Hanfu then shouldn't Japanese clothing look Chinese rather than the other way around?

The Chinese government should have a decree mandating its citizen wearing Hanfu at least once a week, or those who wear Hanfu can have discount in public transports that should encourage people to wear it. I really would love to see Chinese walking in the streets wearing traditional clothes like those people who live in the Middle East, India, Japan and to a certain degree Korea.

As I've said in another post, the Chinese government should mandate the revival of Hanfu and encourage citizens to wear it at least once a week. Theres a lot of ways to encourage people to wear it, like for example those who wear can have discounts in transportations, movie cinemas, or dining in restaurants.

^^ No, actually the gov't is reluctant to express any favor towards Hanfu revival, due to the special sensitive cases of minor ethnic groups in China. The gov't is always sacrificing the Han Chinese (92% of population) unique characteristics to the harmony of the entire Chinese nationalities.
I highly doubt Hanfu will be official. It might be a fashion, but never be official if China wants to keep Tibet, Xinjiang (Uygurs), Inner Mongol and Muslims as part of the "empire".

If they want to keep Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia then they should start banning Tibetan, and Arabic writing and everyone living there should write and speak only Chinese. As for the Hanfu its just a dress for the Han people, I believe ethnic minorities should also be encouraged to wear their own dress.

LOL, the gov't is smarter than you think. That's part of the politics. Actually on the contrary, gov't carries out many policies which favors minorities since the founding of PRC. If you are banning and eliminating their culture you will give them and foreign countries excuses for independence. The international condition in this matter is already very bad for the gov't. Westerners are trying to make fuss of Tibet and Uygurs even they enjoy more rights than the Han Chinese in reality.
I believe ethnic minorities should also be encouraged to wear their own dress.
They are. The gov't is actively promoting this whenever possible. It almost comes to an stereotyping thing that a minority who doesn't wear a traditional dress is a Han.

To some extent I sympathize the Chinese gov't. They are facing more trouble in the world than others simply because of their initial and fundamental belief -- "communism".

in china now, there are hardly any professional hanfu manufacturer! the truth is that hanfu is very beautiful, today we need professional suppliers to make hanfu
Now,hanfu is widely regarded as han's national dress, but at the beginning of the hanfu revival campaign, a lot of people prevented us,laughed at us and phoned the gov and police and told that we wanted to be against the gov
what we have endured, you will not understand

I totally believe in reviving the Hanfu. School uniforms should be Hanfu styled, court officials should dress in Hanfu, During special Chinese holidays people should wear Hanfu. I also believe China should be a facist country in the future.

I agree with you.

I believe in this aspect, the CCP is doing a good job.

Also, another reason to NOT have the government require people to wear Hanfu is because people simply won't WANT to do anything they are REQUIRED to do. Let the Hanfu revival take its own course, it'd flourish much better than if it was a requirement. Look how well received the REQUIRED haircut and clothing Hans were forced to wear during Qing dynasty by the Manchu...

I agree.

In some ways, China is almost "stuck" with the label of being "communist" and have been for at least almost 30 years. It's funny how most people who call China "communist" don't even really know what communism is...
