View Full Version : Walt Disney Concert Hall | Los Angeles, USA
latennisguy August 14th, 2005, 08:51 AM What do you guys think? In 1988, renowned architect Frank Gehry was selected to design the complex, whose final shape he unveiled in 1991. (Prior to Bilbao)

It's a beautiful structure!
Tazmaniadevil August 15th, 2005, 03:40 AM 8.5 I would have voted it higher for its originality if it had been built when first proposed, but it was very difficult getting donations for the building for a long time due to the radical design. But after Bilbao built the Guggenheim and it became popular, the donations increased and the building was built. I don't really like the design but I respect its uniqueness very much.

how unorigional
Madman August 21st, 2005, 05:11 PM Its nice but i wonder whether it would have been better if Gehry had not clad it in metal as requested by the clients after the success of the guggenheim. Oh well...

BGD August 23rd, 2005, 08:36 AM 6 out of 10. I don’t like the outside look but inside it looks perfect.

For a building of the 80's, the architecture style is absolutely fantastic!
hauntedheadnc October 9th, 2005, 11:54 PM 8/10. I'm ambivalent. It's certainly a stunning feat, and it is beautiful, but it still leaves me cold even when I consider the little touched designed to make it warmer and more inviting, such as the floral upholstery on the seats. It's not a building I'd want for my city, and that's one of the ways I measure how much something thrills me.
satit28 October 13th, 2005, 06:14 AM very unique............

I just can't stand this type of garbage dump style "modern art" designs, along with its wasteful use of metal.
DenverDane July 3rd, 2006, 09:29 PM Had the pleasure of seeing it in real life last December. 9/10

tanzirian May 2nd, 2007, 05:10 AM 9.5 / 10. Gehry is pretty much a one-trick-pony but it is a trick that works well with spaces like museums, performance halls, and the like.

Gistok October 25th, 2012, 08:22 AM This building... in Gehry's typical "Trash Compactor Baroque" style is really not that bad aesthetically speaking. However as with all cutting edge designs, the laws of unintended consequences kicks in. The reflective glare caused blinding light spots for nearby motorists... also caused nearby residents to have their air conditioning bills almost double, due to the reflective light, and caused hot spots on nearby pavements to reach as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Another problem has been acoustics. Not all critics are happy about the halls acoustics.
I give it a 9 for looks, and a 7 for functionality.

The concert hall lobby areas was more impressive to me than the actual concert hall interior.
I wasnt crazy about the seat pattern on the inside but its an impressive structure for sure.
Amazing what Gehry's staff achieved off of his "chicken scratch"
