bjfan82 August 15th, 2005, 07:01 PM You forgot the picture with Jim Carrey on top????
Pics look great....I wish we had more buildings that were stuck right up next to each other like Rand and the National Fuel (can't remember the real name) building. That's something I noticed everytime I go to Albany...in some parts of their downtown the buildings are really dense.
BuffCity August 15th, 2005, 08:39 PM ah yes...the Tishman Building, though it has many names.
BuffCity August 15th, 2005, 08:54 PM You know, looking at this...This building is always overlooked...it is actually the 2nd tallest in Buffalo with it's spire going to 475ft. The ArtDeco features are brilliant and the overall mass really makes the building a beauty.
With Tishman holding it up (lol) it does give this block an odd look, but at the same time Lafayette Square was once very busy with the German Insurance, Rand, Brisbane, Hotel Lafayette and the other Hotel/theater next to rand (now a parking lot) all around the statue...and thats the East side of main.
I'm thinking of putting together a thread of all the buildings Buffalo has lost...it will be a sad one, but one I think we all should take a look at.
Has anyone been inside of the Rand?
NYC007 August 15th, 2005, 09:25 PM ^ Yes. There's an HSBC branch on the ground floor with an awesome Art Deco lobby. Someone should start a thread for Buffalo interiors or lobbies. The Prudential/Guarantee Building, Ellicott Square Buiding, City Hall...they all have cool interriors. Sounds like a good photo project for a great photographer...BuffCity?
BuffCity August 15th, 2005, 09:50 PM Well guys, if I have to take a day off from work to go on a photo trip...I will let you all know.
So far on my list of places to go...as it follows, I will be camping in Delaware park from the 19th thru the 22nd. lol
1. Niagara Street
2. Black Rock / Niagara River (Requested)
3. North Buffalo (Requested)
4. MORE Medical District
5. MORE Allentown
6. MORE Delaware Ave
7. Delaware Park
8. Genesee Street (Requested)
9. South Buffalo
10. Broadway
11. Downtown Building Lobby's (Requested)
12. Grain & Industry sectors
Once you get out there, you just wanna keep looking for more...this city is fucking awsome.
steel August 15th, 2005, 10:07 PM You will probably get arested if you try to shoot lobbies
Architorture August 15th, 2005, 11:29 PM how about we get some sicamore ave and some other gems like that..haha
BuffCity August 15th, 2005, 11:36 PM I'm sure that Rand, Ellicott Square, City Hall, are okay.
But I know that Guaranty and Liberty are off limits...unless you request in which they say NO.
I'll see what I can do.
sargeantcm August 16th, 2005, 12:26 AM Thanks for the pics - I already have alot of them through some means or others, but this is definitely a help. I should start posting some of the ones I've gotten!
You know, I never thought too much of the Tishmann (I think the back side of it is downright heinous), but that aside I think it must be the best looking box out there, at least in Buffalo. I can't recall seeing too many art deco boxes out there, but this one's a good one. And not flamboyantly art deco like City Hall, NYC's Chrysler Tower, or Syracuse's NiMo, but classy art deco. Simple glass and "chrome", straight, clean lines, shiny, etc. Too bad it's practically vacant?
I know it's not historically significant in any way, but I thought the Main Place Lobby had a pretty nice as well. Nice and "posh". I have to say, though, that Ellicott Sq is beautiful; and unlike City Hall's almost dusty-closet catacomb type feel, it's pretty well illuminated thanks to the skylight (which leaks, btw).
NYC007 August 16th, 2005, 03:56 AM Yeah, well I'm writing this from NYC. And I just spent the day (after my work meetings) walking around lower Manhattan. I just checked out the Irving Trust Building's lobby, and I have to say it is the coolest Art Deco lobby I have ever seen. Very Dick Tracey! Totally cool. Anyone who has the chance needs to come down here. Anyway, while I was checking it out, there were people snapping pictures. So if they're not that paranoid here (about 2 blocks from Ground Zero) then it would be sad for people to be worried about the Rand Building in Buffalo. But, hey, nothing would surprise me.

Like I said before, Tishman is very 50's era...its' awsome.
The inside of the Guaranty is so nice, but they are kinda iffy about pics...I guess its all about who is working security.
The Rand is one of the buildings that are thought to have influenced the ESB of NY, I guess the ESB architect reviewed plans for Rand while looking into the designs of the ESB.
sargeantcm - Don't worry I have more stuff for the rand collection, gimme a little time.

Buffy,
I hope you do get down to South Buffalo (and Lackawanna). That part of the city is very underrepresented here. It is the heart od Irish Buffalo and is mostly stable middle class. The northern portion is a bit rougher and the center between Abbott and McKinnley is the most wealthy (though not rich). Though there are very few architectural gems there is the OLV Basilica (not to be missed at Ridge Road and South Park and the Botanical Gardens near by.) there are several housing types one of the most interesting is a South Buffalo style Bungalo. There are also two Olmstead Parks. South Park is closest to its original design. Also in SB is the Tift Nature preserve (worth seeing).

i've been waiting to see your pictures of these areas. these are two places that i like very much, and i am hoping your expert photography skills turn out some gems for these places, much like for many of the other places you did.
BuffCity August 18th, 2005, 06:14 AM planning, it's amazing how I have to now plan these trips. Buffalo will make me get carried away, I just start taking photos of all kinds of shit, signs, buildings, trees, it dont matter.
OLV and the Botantical gardens are on my list.
Was in Buffalo and Fort Erie last night...these are Urban Photo contest runners I promise you all.
5 new Buffalo tours coming soon.
