Glasgow to Announce Commonwealth Games Bid for 2014

Glasgow will be announcing its bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games within hours, according to The Times. Glasgow will be the only British bid since Cardiff opted out, but there are bids expected from cities in South Africa, Canada and Nigeria.

The 2006 Games will be in Melbourne and the 2010 Games have already been awarded to New Delhi.

Glasgow decided to become a candidate for the Games after the Scottish bid assessment team concluded that the Commonwealth Games Federation will give the city’s bid serious consideration despite London hosting the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

The assessment committee has concluded that hosting the 2014 Games would provide a significant boost to the Scottish economy even though the 1986 Games in Edinburgh were not a financial success and have not left a lasting legacy of sporting facilities.

David Mackay, chairman of the assessment team and former chairman of the Scottish Rugby Union, has recommended that the Scottish executive board support the bid because it would create jobs, improve tourist numbers, and potentially act as a catalyst to improve Scotland’s poor health record.

Likely venues include both Hampden Park and the SECC and would cost about one million pounds to produce. It’s believed that new facilities would be created for swimming and athletics.

Glasgow has successfully hosted the Special Olympics and Scotland’s history of hosting major sporting events, including the Open golf championships and the 2002 Champions League final, is expected to give its bid a boost.

Also, Glasgow’s willingness to host the Commonwealth boxing championships after India withdrew is considered to be a plus for the bid.

Good for Glasgow. But with London 2012, I seriously doubt their chances. A great pity cos the games would have been great in Glasgow.

remember for the commonwealth games Scotland is distinct from England and Wales and NI. So technically its a different bid.

I know, I didn't realise what a positive effect my presence would make :)

Re the Games, it would be great if Glasgow get them, (Manchester 2002 was superb) but my gut feel is Canada will get them.

Mo, if Cape Town doesn't win the Olympic bid, I guess you will have to go for the Commonwealth's to prove to the ICC that you can host a good games and then bid again - just a thought.

How is your bid going by the way, I checked the website out and it look's good.

Excellent news chaps.

The potential for redevelopment in the East End of Glasgow because of the Commonwealth Games is vast.

More so than most people could imagine.

I am delighted that we are going for it, and am not phased at all by the fact that London has 2012 - as Prizemada says, for the commonwealth, Scotland and England are perceived to be different host countries, so we do have a fighting chance. And after seeing what Manchester can do, Im pretty sure that all faith has been restored in terms of what Britain can and cannot do when it comes to putting on a show.

I cant wait til the official press release with final plans for stadiums, swimming pools etc - most of us Glaswegian forumers have a rough idea of what the situation will be, but it will be good to see it all proper and official :)

Its about time Glasgow had something to shine about - hopefully this will be it.

As for the Canadian bid - I have np doubt that it will be strong, but realistically, can Hamilton City compete with Glasgow?

I hope not..... :)

Great news but I'm doubtful they'll get it so soon after Manchester. Still would be great though not long after london 2012.

Yep this is what the list COULD've looked like.

Euro 1996 England,
1998 European Indoor Championships Birmingham,
2002 Commonwealth games Manchester,
2003 World Indoor Championships Birmingham.
2005 World Athletic Championships London,
2007 European Indoor Championships Birmingham,
2012 Olympics London,
2014 Commonwealth Games Glasgow ...

Quite a list if London didnt mess up the 5th one ;) If we had the World Cup for 2006 the list would've been complete.

Canada has both the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and the 1978 Commonwealths in 1978 so its not a problem. And besides Vancouver have the 2010 Winter Olympics!

The official bid website and their 'Back the Bid!' campaign has now launched at http://www.glasgow2014.com

"A new campaign has been launched to encourage the whole of Scotland to back the bid to bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow

The campaign is seeking to gather signatures of support which can be offered in three ways

By registering on the official website at http://www.glasgow2014.com
By texting GOLD to 61611
By completing a postcard distributed through sports clubs and leisure centres
A number of high profile celebrities have already publicly demonstrated their support including, Sir Alex Ferguson, Ally McCoist, Shirley Robertson, Lulu, Nick Nairn, Colin Montgomerie, and Carol Smillie.

Jack McConnell, the First Minister said: "Scotland was the first country to launch a bid for the 2014 Games back in August. Last month we were the first to accept the candidature rules and officially declare to the Commonwealth Games Federation our desire to host the Games.

"Today is the next step on our journey. We are launching Scotland's brand and inviting the whole country to sign up in support of Scotland's bid. I ask the people of Scotland to demonstrate to the Commonwealth their tremendous enthusiasm for their nation's bid."

Steven Purcell, the Leader of the City Council said: "The Commonwealth Games provides a huge opportunity for Glasgow to work with the rest of Scotland to deliver a truly international event. Glasgow can stage a high quality and low risk Games in a vibrant, multicultural and friendly city."

Further endorsement of the campaign and logo has been given by Louise Martin, Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland who said : "The Commonwealth Games grows in scale every four years. There is huge excitement in bringing an event with the stature of the Games to our small nation.

"2104 gives us the chance to say to the rest of the world that small nations can not only deliver these Games but can provide an event to rival anything that has come before and a spectacle that visitors will never forget."

The official logo for the bid has also been unveiled.

It has been designed to represent the modernity of Glasgow and Scotland while acknowledging the country's cultural heritage as it is recognised by the rest of the world.

It has two distinct elements; the logo and the modern tartan backdrop.

The logo is inspired by the Games 'friendly' theme and is loosely based on two people coming together to form two Xs - 2014 will be the twentieth Games. The typography also refers to Glasgow most famous designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The second element is the tartan backdrop which will provide a common Scottish theme to all communication and reflect the nation in a 'bold and modern light'.

The logo can also be found at www.glasgow2014.com

Scotland faces competition to host the 2014 from Abuja, Nigeria, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Commonwealth Games Federation will announce the name of the 2014 host city in Sri Lanka in October 2007.

The Scottish team for the 2006 Melbourne Games leaves for Australia soon."

ok im scared...if all the african members vote for abuja...asia owes africa votes for delhi winning 2010...abuja could win this...even if they didnt cope hosting an all african games...lets leave it up to the CWG committee to not shortlist them in a technical sense...2014 should go to glasgow...plain and simple...abuja simply wont cope...i hope the CWG committe can see this...

Well at the end of the day, CWG delegates should vote for the the BEST candidate, and not on the basis of political aligencies, or favouritism. If Nigiria is the best candidate fine, but, in my opinion, it is still full of corruption and not yet ready to stage the games.

I do hope Glasgow wins....
