Filipino wins Google Map Maker contest (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/technology/03/02/10/filipino-citizen-cartographer-wins-google-map-maker-contest?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter)

MANILA, Philippines - A 23-year-old "citizen cartographer" from the University of the Philippines bested 700 other contestants to become the winner of the first Google Map Maker Global Competition.

Wayne Dell Manuel won a US$50,000 donation from UNICEF for the Philippines after adding more than 1,500 qualifying map features and made hundreds of moderations in Google Map Maker. His edits, which were primarily of local public schools, were judged to be the most numerous and accurate entries in the contest.

"I'm so excited to have won this global competition because it represents a win not just for me, but also for the Philippines," said Manuel. "To be frank, I entered the competition to win the US$50,000 for our country, and I hope that my win encourages more Filipinos to contribute to making the online map of our country even better. We Filipinos are known for our spirit of bayanihan, and this is a great way for us to come together in the Internet era to make life better for our fellow kababayans by literally putting their communities on the digital map."

The competition was launched to encourage the use of technology for community development by asking users to map universities, schools, hospitals and medical clinics in their home countries. The goal was to help humanitarian organizations better deliver services, respond to crises, and adapt to change in the countries they operate by enabling access to accurate digital maps.

Manuel, a software developer at the UP National Telehealth Center, started using Google Map Maker in 2008 and initially edited streets, establishments, and municipalities in his hometowns of Tuguegarao and Baguio City. Later, he added most of the roads in Tarlac City, Tarlac; Angeles City, Pampanga and Tacloban City, Leyte. He has been recognized globally as one of the top 10 all-time mappers with nearly 35,000 map edits under his belt.

"Maps have always interested me because they help me get acquainted with places I’ve never seen before. As soon as I heard about Google Map Maker, I immediately joined and found that its interface is very intuitive and user-friendly. I love the feeling of putting together something that would be useful to many people," he said.

Jennifer Mazzon, Community Organizer for Google Maps, said Manuel's contributions are invaluable for people who rely on geographic information, which is import during times of natural disaster.

"Even though the contest period is over, the mapping effort for the Philippines is only beginning. There are still many places that are in need of accurate details and we hope that even more Filipinos will use Google Map Maker to share their knowledge about their hometowns with the world," Mazzon said.

Manuel said he will continue editing in Google Map Maker even after the competition because there are still many unmapped areas in the Philippines.

He also recalled how his contributions helped many people when Typhoon Ondoy hit the country last September. “After Ondoy, a volunteer group used Google Maps to map distress calls and facilitate rescue operations. I was so happy to see that the roads I helped place on Google Map Maker, later pushed to Google Maps, were used to locate fellow Filipinos who needed help," he said.

MANILA, Philippines—White House chef Filipino American Cristeta Pasia Comerford can whip them all when it comes to cooking. But she believes she injects the Pinoy flavor in whatever cuisine she prepares for the United States First Family and their guests.

Philippine-made Ford Focus is Top Gear Indonesia's Car of the Year

topgear.ph (http://www.topgear.com.ph/news/philippinemade-ford-focus-is-top-gear-indonesias-car-of-the-year)

The Philippine-made Ford Focus TDCi bested four other finalists in the recent Top Gear Indonesia Car of the Year Awards, proving once again that locally-assembled cars are of world-class quality.

"We're both honoured and proud to have Ford Focus TDCi named 'Car of the Year' by Top Gear Indonesia," Ford Motor Indonesia president Will Angove said. "The Focus TDCi represents an incredibly sporty vehicle that combines style, comfort, fuel efficiency and technology to deliver exceptional appeal."

Ford said Top Gear Indonesia cited the Focus TDCi's "substantial design improvements, particularly the significant upgrade to its ergonomic interior" as its winning factors. The magazine also said the Ford Focus TDCI's Duratorq turbodiesel engine and new six-speed double-clutch PowerShift automatic transmission makes the five-door hatchback a versatile performer in various driving situations--whether it's climbing, passing, cornering, or simply dealing with the stop-and-go city traffic.

Ford also quoted Top Gear Indonesia saying the Focus TDCi has an "expressive and contemporary" design and is "a pleasure to drive."

As Car of the Year, the Philippine-made Ford Focus TDCI is on the cover of Top Gear Indonesia's February issue.

"The Top Gear Indonesia 'Car of the Year' award is another testament of Ford's commitment to delivering a world-class lineup of Ford vehicles to Indonesian consumers," Angove said.

The Ford Focus TDCi is just one of the award-winning vehicles made by Ford in its Sta. Rosa plant. Last year, the same Ford Focus was named the best diesel-fed hatchback while the Ford Escape was cited as the best gasoline-fueled sport-utility vehicle during the Bangkok International Motor Show.

N. Samar girl speaks for RP at UN forum (http://www.malaya.com.ph/03042010/news4.html)
BY ASHZEL HACHERO

A HIGH school senior from Northern Samar was chosen to represent the country at the 54th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, an official of Plan Philippines, an international aid agency working with needy children, said yesterday.

Mardy Halcon, Plan Philippines communications officer, said Donnady Coquila Lao, from Lope de Vega High School, will address the international gathering.

Halcon said Lao will have a full day of activities beginning today, Wednesday (Philippine time) where she will be interviewed by journalists from Finland.

"The interview will focus on her being on the same panel with a Finnish Minister at an event of the United Nations Education and Children’s Fund (Unicef)," Halcon said.

Lao will be at the Plan Philippines side event dubbed "Universal Day of the Girl" along with two other girls from Canada.

Halcon said the girl-led interactive event calls for a universal day of girls so that their concerns will "permanently be on the agenda of duty bearers in every country."

Lao will also be at the Unicef side event "Making Women Remember Girls."

"In this event, Donnady is expected to speak about her experiences as a girl and as a young person actively engaged in promoting girls’ rights in her community/country. She will deliver this in a panel with such internationally renowned personalities as former Ireland president Mary Robinson," Halcon said.

Also attending the session are Charlotte Bunch, founding director and senior scholar at the Women’s Global Leadership and Rutgers University and Audun Lysbakken, Norwegian Minister of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion.

Lao will also give a two-minute speech at the UN reception on how additional resources being allocated by the UN Foundation for adolescent girls can impact on them and her thoughts on her participation as an adolescent to a meeting such as the Commission on the Status of Women.

In this particular session, Lao will be sitting in a panel with UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon.

On March 14 she will be at the Daily Beast (online magazine) Summit where she will be interviewed by Queen Rania, wife of King Abdullah of Jordan.

On the same event, a "Girlafesto" will be read by a group of girls from New York and Lao will be reading the last important line of the manifesto.

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women aims to discuss ways on how to fully implement the provisions of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA), adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, that seeks to address such issues as gender equality and the rights of women and children, especially in impoverished countries.

Pinay scientist receives prestigious award in Paris (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/pinoy-migration/03/05/10/pinay-scientist-receives-prestigious-award-paris)
by Danny Buenafe, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, Chief | 03/05/2010 2:16 PM

PARIS, France - For the first time, a Filipina marine scientist was globally recognized for her contribution in the field of science and technology. Professor Lourdes Cruz was the only awardee from Asia-Pacific. She was one of the 5 women scientists who were honored in the prestigious 12th Annual L'Oreal-Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) awards for women in science at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

But Prof. Cruz is not that ecstatic, urging government to focus more on science development to cope with environmental degradation. Before her retirement last year, Prof. Cruz was a bio-chemist at the University of the Philippines Marine Institute. She received a masters and doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Iowa. The other 4 awardees for this year are from the United States, Europe, Latin America, Africa and Arab states.

Prof. Cruz was recognized for developing and converting toxins emanating from marine snails and sea shells into pain-killer drugs used for those afflicted with cancer, epilepsy and brain disorder. She was also cited for actively helping indigenous tribes, particularly the Aetas in Bataan province.

Prof. Cruz shares her vast knowledge in science with the rural communities in mobilizing livelihood projects and education which conform with their cultural norm. The 18-member L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards jury was headed by German Doctor Gunter Blobel, 1999 Nobel Prize Winner for medicine. Prof. Cruz thinks more Filipinos, even women, can excel in science if the Philippine government will do its share in the development of science and technology.

Looking at the present crop of those running for president, she does not see someone who has a viable plan for future Filipino scientists. She laments that the budget allocation for science and technology does not even reach 1% of the entire budget. She added the Department of Science and Technology ranks last in the order of priority for budget share, unlike in other countries which have progressed significantly due to major shift in science development. For her US$100,000 award, Prof. Cruz will use the money to buy a piece of land to serve as a new base for her rural livelihood incubator program for the Aetas.

Juana’s Stories

In the same way that ‘Anna Karenina’ connects with Leo Tolstoy’s Russia, ‘Cuentos de Juana’ connects Filipinos to the time we have lost and to memories we have to recover…

By RONALD LIM (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/246272/juana-s-stories)

Flipino writer in Spanish Adelina Gurrea’s resume may be peppered with accolades but the irony is that barely anyone outside of specific literary circles knows anything about her!

Gurrea was a Filipino editor and poet who won in 1955 the Premio Zóbel, the oldest literary award in the Philippines, for her collection of poems entitled “A Lo Largo del Camino (Along the Road)”.

In 1964, the Editorial Doncel of Madrid recognized her children’s book “Comodín y Pamplinosa”. Her collection of stories entitled “Cuentos de Juana” was bestowed the first prize by the Certamen Internacional de Literatura de la Union Latina de Paris in 1951 and is considered one of the finest works in Filipino-Hispano literature to this day.

To bring her achievements to light, as well as those of other Filipino writers in Spanish, Instituto Cervantes republishes Gurrea’s most famous work “Cuentos de Juana”, as the initial offering of the Biblioteca Clasicos Hispanofilipinos.

Funded by the Embassy of Spain, Biblioteca Clasicos Hispanofilipinos aims to preserve the works of Fil-Hispanic authors from the beginning of the 20th century by initially publishing eight titles annotated by Hispanic literature scholars. Also in the list are Jesús Balmori’s “Pajaros de Fuego” and “Bancarrota de Almas”, Enrique Laygo’s “Caretas”, and Antonio Abad’s “El Campeón.”

A MOST IMPORTANT WORK

Spanish academic Beatriz Alvarez-Tardio had been studying Philippine literature in Spanish when she began the process of recovering Filipino-Spanish works in the country in 1999.

“I started this process of recovery when I saw the situation and the condition of book preservation here in the country,” she recalls. Tardio obtained her Ph.D. in Philippine Literature in Spanish at the University of the Philippines in 2004, and finished postgraduate studies on Gender and Feminism with honors.

Tardio’s interest in the works of woman writers led her to the works of Gurrea. “Among the few books about Philippine literature written in Spanish or histories of Philippine literature, there was little said about woman writers. But the one who appears the most is Adelina Gurrea,” she recalls. “I started researching and I found out that ‘Cuentos de Juana’ was internationally-awarded.

I found a copy and started reading and saw that it was a very good book!’’ Tardio says the book still holds a lot of charm for followers of literature written in Spanish, even if more than half a century has passed since it was first published.

She says it is a very well-written book and interesting because it is well-constructed and it suggests many points about the relations between the Filipinos of Spanish origin and the Filipinos of indigenous origin.

Wystan de la Peña, chief of the University of the Philippines’ Department of European Languages, says that the republication of “Cuentos de Juana” and other works in the Biblioteca Clasicos Hispanofilipinos is still relevant to Filipinos.

“We need Juana’s stories because literary creations are really historical representations of their time.

They are really mirrors of their period. Literary productions connect with their era and make gateways,” De la Peña explains. “Once we recover the text, we recover our own national memory, because those narratives preserve our memories of the times when they were written.”

Tardio affirms this, saying that “Cuentos de Juana” can stir a lot of interest even beyond the literary circle.

“This book can really arouse a lot of interest from a scholar’s point of view. You can see the relations between men and women. Those who like doing anthropological research will find interest in the book’s chronicling of the sugar mills. She has beautiful descriptions of how the process is done,” she says.

“Ask any historian that no matter how many documents they search in the archives, they do not use those documents to make history alive. They cite María Clara, they cite Padre Damaso, to paint a picture of the time. Historians realize that the general public connects to the big narratives, to the literary productions, in the same way that ‘Anna Karenina’ connects with Leo Tolstoy’s Russia. Why do we need Juana’s stories?

Because they connect us back to time we have lost and to memories we have to recover,” ends De la Peña.

Philippines president Macapagal-Arroyo campaigns for the Underground River

On 23 February 2010, the Official New7Wonders of Nature Philippines Finalist welcomed its President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, for a boat tour of the 8-km-long Puerto Princesa Underground River. She called for Filipinos around the world to join with people everywhere in voting for the subterranean waterway, which runs through a deep cavern full of extraordinary rock formations, below rugged limestone and marble cliffs, before emptying into an underground lagoon with crystalline waters.

Hope to join the “magic circle” of the Official New7Wonders of Nature

President Macapagal-Arroyo was joined during her almost one-hour boat tour of the Underground River by national, regional and local figures, notably lead New7Wonders campaigner Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn. The visit was part of a trip emphasizing sustainable tourism growth across the Philippines. Data shows the Puerto Princesa region posting record growths in tourism, even as in 2009 tourist arrivals declined by 8.5% worldwide and 6.7% in the Asia Pacific region.

Z2H5wPvll3I

President Macapagal-Arroyo called on Filipinos and others, at home and abroad, to vote and share the excitement of the campaign and of the Underground River being one of the 28 Official Finalists with friends and relatives everywhere “so that our own cherished underground river will ultimately be included in the magic circle of the New7Wonders of Nature.”

Patriots proclaimed ABL champs

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – The Philippine Patriots formally received their championship rings Tuesday for winning the inaugural ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) tournament at the luxurious Garden Hotel here.

Dressed in Barong Tagalog, the Patriots, led by team owners Mikee Romero of Harbour Centre and Tonyboy Cojuangco, got their gold-plated rings from league founder and Malaysian business tycoon Tony Fernandes.

The Patriots won the title in style as they swept Indonesia’s Satria Muda BritAma in their best-of-five title series.

"I would like to congratulate this team because they worked so hard for it. They underwent a lot of sacrifices to win the championship trophy," said Patriots co-owner Mikee Romero.

It was the 10th crown for the Harbour Centre boss after winning seven straight titles in the Philippine Basketball League, the Southeast Asian Games and the SEABA Champions Cup championships held in 2007.

"We actually thought that the ABL season would be a walk in the park. It didn't turn out that way but we worked so hard for it and we enjoyed our time participating in this league," said team co-owner Tony Boy Cojuangco.

The Patriots won 11 of 15 games during the elimination round then swept aside both the KL Dragons and Satria Muda to claim the league's first-ever title.

The night was doubly special for Warren Ybañez and import Jason Dixon as they won the Finals MVP plum and Best Import award, respectively.

Dixon averaged 13.9 points and 10.1 rebounds highlighted by 16 double-doubles in the last 17 games.

The season MVP went to the Thailand Tigers lefty forward Attaporn Lertmalaiporn.

A new crop of Patriots will likely join next season as some of the current players on the team are hoping to play in the PBA either through free agency or in the annual Rookie Draft.

Barako Bull, which signed a sponsorship deal with Harbour Centre recently, is reportedly eyeing several members of the team like Rob Wainwright, Jerwin Gaco, Ybañez, and Christian Coronel.

Arnel sings National Anthem and records new Journey CD
Credits to goodnewspilipinas.

Arnel Pineda, the Filipino lead singer of the popular American rock band “Journey,” will sing the Philippine national anthem in Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s much-awaited fight with Ghanaian Joshua “The Grand Master” Clottey on March 13 (March 14 in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

Pineda was invited by Pacquiao to sing “Lupang Hinirang” in this upcoming fight.

“I’m really happy, this is my third invitation from Manny and i’m happy this is finally pushing through,” he said.

The crooner said he was not able to sing in Pacquiao’s previous fights because of his hectic schedule as Journey’s vocalist.

Aside from singing in the Pacquiao-Clottey bout, Pineda is also set to fly back to US this coming April to record the latest album of Journey.

Lea Salonga: The Journey So Far
Reviewed By: Brian Scott Lipton · Mar 11, 2010 · New York

Lea Salonga
(© Ronnie O. Salvacion)

Just like all those pretty girls in high school who never bothered to develop a personality, Lea Salonga could more than get by on her remarkably pure, sweet, and seemingly effortlessly voice (and adorable looks). But she's also wisely developed her interpretive skills and sense of humor, both of which are on full display in her extremely enjoyable cabaret show, The Journey So Far, now at the Cafe Carlyle.

As this is her first official foray into cabaret, it's not surprising that Salonga adopts a fairly traditional approach to the genre. She introduces herself through "Salamat, Salamat Musika," a song from her native country, The Philippines, and then intertwines her early personal and musical history as a child performer though an enchanting section that includes spirited renditions of "Sing," "Tomorrow," and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" -- as well as a hilarious recitation of the Girl Scout pledge.

In a nice twist, though, when Salonga gets to the show that made her a star, Miss Saigon, she chooses to perform -- passionately -- "Too Much for One Heart," a lush romantic ballad that was written for the work, but never made it to the stage. Afterwards, she immediately launches into a gorgeous version of "On My Own," which she performed in Broadway's Les Miserables -- and which, as it turns out, was her audition song for Miss Saigon.

It's her courtship and eventual marriage to Rob Chien, however, that leads to the strongest section of her act -- and the one that veers from a "greatest hits" format. Salonga belts out a snappy "Something's Comin," which is followed by an extraordinarily heartfelt pairing of "Fallin'" and "I Still Believe in Love" (both from They're Playing Our Song), a pitch-perfect take on Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich's pattery "There's Nothing I Wouldn't Do," a breathtakingly beautiful version of the Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me," and a positively lovely rendition of "Two Words." In each of these songs, Salonga's exquisite technique and commitment to the song is unmissable.

Smartly, Salonga doesn't disappoint her fans; she gives her all to the stirring "Reflection," which she sang in the Disney animated film Mulan, and tackles her biggest hit, "A Whole New World" (from Disney's Aladdin), albeit in an unusual and humorous fashion. Her final pairing of "Your Song" and "Someone Is Waiting for You" is memorable and unexpected.

Indeed, by evening's end, Salonga is more-than-likely to be voted most popular. Don't hold it against her.

Newsweek is a local weekly magazine.

Where you can star in your own solo
SUPREMO By Tim Yap (The Philippine Star) Updated March 20, 2010 12:00 AM

“The new middle class is authoritarian and is more nationalistic,” screams the cover of Newsweek’s story on the burgeoning of the new global ruling class. The flames of Pinoy pride have been inherent in us even before our first hero was proclaimed, so when clothing and fashion started to go on the Pinoy trend, everything — from our Philippine map down to the three stars and a sun of our flag — got renewed life in fabric and merchandise. From the “Buy Filipino” campaign of Tita Cory’s yesteryear, we have now moved on to a “by Filipino” generation where there is premium value on things made with that distinctive Pinoy touch.

From this flow of thought, clothes went beyond the facets of “cool” and into the boundaries of making statements that speak of this generation and its pursuit of liberty, self-expression, and individualism. Mainstream retail brands started having sub brands that cater solely to this market. Solo, under the same group that designs and produces Freeway, has become a cult favorite of Pinoy pride aficionados. Its edgy, eclectic and eccentric vintage-looking pieces stand out from the rest.

Standing out is what it’s all about. With this in mind, an online search was made and here on this Supreme space, we unveil the winners. “It’s really exciting because it’s the first online contest of its kind in the country,” said Sheree Gotuaco, the fine, young and dynamic energy behind the brand that has pushed peso prints on T-shirts (how’s that for “bang for your buck“?) and hero graphic tees. This Solo “Discover You” online search even predated that of international brand Bennetton, which just wrapped up its voting period this week.

Creative Collaboration

“The entries online were really interesting because it made artists — from the photographer, stylist, and graphic artist — collaborate with their subject (the model). And when great artistic minds meet, a flurry of creativity is produced. It’s electric!” gushed Sheree as we sifted through pages and pages of model wannabes applying online to be Solo’s endorser. Proximity Philippines, of the famed BBDO creative agency group was their partner in this online experiment. You can view the other entries, that reached to more than a hundred, at www.solo.com.ph.

And the winners are Jiggy Tallada and Jhoanna Flor — Solo’s seductive new faces. Their entries had Simon Agregado and Alexis Fusilero as graphic artists. In their photos, Jiggy and Jhoanna are wearing Solo’s Old Manila tees printed via high-technology sublimation process — taking Pinoy pride to another level. The Old Manila collection is worth adulating. It chose several depictions of the Philippines of the past so that the youth of today can wear their heros and heritage on their sleeves.

The collection, which includes graphic tees and hoodies, features Old Manila themes such as: old Philippine painters (such as Juan Luna, Damian Domingo, and Jose Luciano Dans), Philippine heroes, Philippine currencies, and others. Each shirt has a historical box printed on the back of the tee explaining each image. So if you can’t bring the kids to the museums, why not make them wear what’s in a museum? That’s both cutting edge and contemporary, having your shirt and wearing your curator, too.

Online endorser search winners Jiggy and Jhoanna’s Solo campaign is officially launching today in all Solo stores.

Alexander Martinez shines in Poland’s Got Talent Contest
credits to goodnewspilipinas..

http://images.dailyradar.com/media/uploads/showhype/story_preview/2009/12/08/alexander_martinez.jpg

Alexander Martinez Poland based Filipino entertainer Alexander Martinez made history in Poland by being the only non-Polish entertainer to make it all the way to the Grand Finals of the country’s top rating reality show “Poland’s Got Talent.”

While the show drew other foreign contenders who are also based in Poland, Alex was the only Asian who made the cut.

The story of Alex captured the imagination of judges and audiences of Poland’s version of the widely popular reality show that has spun off global franchises, including one in the Philippines.

He wowed judges and audiences alike in episode after episode, with his versatile vocal range that could even interpret songs like “Time To Say Goodbye,” which was originally sung by female artist Sarah Brightman.

So, from the thousands of candidates who auditioned, they were whittled down to 100, then 10, then the final three. The night before the finals, Alex was running a high fever. Doctors already grew concerned as they attended to him.

He chose to perform an opera number entitled “The Final Countdown” and floored the jury made up of Polish actress Malgorzata Foremniak, rock star Agnieszka Chylinska, and controversial showman Kuba Wojewodzki, who gushed over his breathtaking rendition, showering him with superlatives and high praise.

“More than his talent, they told me that it was his good attitude that endeared him to the Polish audiences. It really shone through,” his Polish wife Zanet said.

While the total votes failed to catapult Alex to the top spot – it went to a 27-year-old accordionist – he still received 5,000 euros and sponsored plane tickets to the Philippines, to his hometown Cebu for him, his wife and 10-year-old daughter Vanessa.

The Filipino talent keeps shining through anywhere in the world.

RP kids triumph in Street Child World Cup in South Africa
goodnewspilipinas...

http://a1.twimg.com/profile_images/468551444/securedownload_bigger.jpg

The Philippines scored in extra time to edge host country South Africa to win the consolation pool of the First Deloitte Street Child World Cup in Durban, South Africa over the weekend.

When regulation ended the scoreboard showed RP 1, South Africa 1. A ten-minute extension period was held with five-minute halves. In the first few minutes of overtime, Mario Titoy scored his second goal of the game, for the Philippine victory.

Miracle granted – a Shield Trophy for the country.

Before the team left the Philippines on March 11, it had been dubbed “The Miracle Team” by co-managers Ed Formoso and Craig Burrows because of the many miracles that had happened on the way to getting the 10 players their passports and getting them to South Africa.

But when the tournament began, the miracles seemed to have ended when the Filipinos suffered back-to-back losses, first against the United Kingdom (4-2), and then against Tanzania (2-0). The loss to Tanzania had eliminated the Philippines from playing in the finals.

But then, the Philippine team beat Brazil 6-2, and the God of miracles began to smile on them once more.

Although the Pinoys had been eliminated from the championship, there was still one more trophy at stake. In this nine-nation tournament (UK, Brazil, Ukraine, South Africa, Tanzania, India, Philippines, Vietnam and Nicaragua), the Shield Trophy was up for grabs. The Shield Trophy was to be contested among the countries in the consolation pool.

After Brazil, the Philippines beat Ukraine, 3-0. South Africa, fighting to stay alive for the Shield Trophy, beat Brazil 2-1.

The stage was set for what was dubbed as the “People’s championship” – two underdog teams, one being the host country, going for the Shield Trophy.

The Deloitte Foundation took a risk in sponsoring the Street Child World Cup. It is a novel idea, one that would be a prequel to the World Cup, which will be held in South Africa this year.

But more than that, the tournament has taken off and inspired dreams and teams to rise to the occasion.

After the match, the Philippine team went around the soccer pitch carrying the South African flag, a sign of friendship. Umthombo director Bullelwa Ngantweni-Hewitt, who could not hold back her tears, said, “These are the best children I’ve ever seen, they were the first group to ever say thank you to Umthombo (the street center the South Africans are from), and now after defeating South Africa they are carrying the South African flag, a sign symbolizing friendship, respect and discipline and with their behavior we have seen how Filipinos are.”

It was the street kids’ will to win more than anything else, according to an emotional Jess Landagan, coach of the Philippine football team. “Sabi nila sa akin ‘kaya namin ito coach. Gusto namin manalo (My players told me they could do it, they want to win),” he said.

The tournament has not only benefited South African street children but every child living in the streets around the world because through this tournament, the voices of the voiceless have been heard.

“We are one voice, one community and one world. This was not just about football,” said Chris Rose of Amos Trust. “It is about a global family and celebrating children’s rights and sport.”

Pinoy named Asian hotshot (http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/entertainment/entertainment/view/20100324-260677/Pinoy-named-Asian-hotshot)

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino filmmaker Adolfo Alix Jr. has been listed by The Hollywood Reporter (THR) among 20 young entertainment personalities dubbed “Next Generation Asia 2010.”

Alix told the Inquirer that Tommaso Campione, executive international director of THR, informed him of his inclusion on the list, which includes Hong Kong actor Daniel Wu (of “Bishonen”), Thai filmmaker Chookiat Sakveerakul (“The Love of Siam”) and Korean actress Kim Ok-vin (“Thirst”).

All the honorees were profiled in the March 12 international edition of the London-based paper.

Alix said he would attend the formal reception on March 23 in former Crown Colony, during the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Best and brightest

According to THR, the honorees, “all age 35 and under … [are] the best and the brightest among their peers” from a vast region considered “the world’s biggest entertainment market.”

Alix, the lone Filipino in the list, said the honor was “a pleasant surprise.”

“I’m thankful and glad they chose someone from the Philippines. It’ll be an inspiration to do better,” the 31-year-old director told the Inquirer .

The Hollywood Reporter essay pointed out that Alix isn’t just one of the most promising, he is also one of the most prolific and hardest-working filmmakers in the current indie scene.

Right decision

Since his 2006 directorial debut, “Donsol,” he has megged about 13 feature films.

With the first quarter of the current year barely over, he has already finished three movies—“Romeo at Juliet” (which opened March 24), “Presa” and “D’Survivors.”

Jean Altavas, writer and producer of “Romeo at Juliet,” was “excited” when she learned of Alix’s THR honor.

“I knew I made the right decision, entrusting my story to him,” Altavas explained. “He understood what I was trying to express with the story. Plus, he continuously collaborates with the cast and crew.”

Lead star Alessandra de Rossi agreed. “He listens to my inputs. We go a long way back. We got close during the shoot of ‘Mga Munting Tinig’ which he co-wrote (in 2002).” De Rossi also said she and Alix grew up together.

Las Vegas mayor declares Dec. 4 Lani Misalucha Day (http://goodnewspilipinas.com/?p=10805)

http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Lani-Misalucha.jpg
Lani Misalucha

As a testament to Lani Misalucha’s popularity in Las Vegas, Mayor Oscar Goodman declared Dec. 4 Lani Misalucha Day.

The proclamation means Lani’s talent will be celebrated every 4th of December, and Mayor Goodman asked all citizens of the city to recognize the Filipina’s “astounding three-octave vocal range, dead-on impressions and incredible dancing talent.”

“They just can’t get enough of her.” That’s what Angelo Giordano of World Entertainment, producer of Voice, says of Lani Misalucha who continues to shine, bigger and brighter, in Las Vegas where critics put her at part with the likes of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

First starring with Vegas’ seasoned performing group The Society of Seven, and later with the quintessential artist Earl Turner in Voices at the Las Vegas Hilton, Lani went solo in Voices last year which has been a consistent crowd favorite.

No wonder Lani has lately been hitting the red carpets in Vegas, Hollywood style, hobnobbing with stellar names like Zac Efron, Billy Zane, Mike Tyson, Jacqueline Bisset, Freda Payne, Randy Jackson (of the Jackson Five) and Dionne Warwick, as well as diplomats and politicians.

Dionne Warwick described Lani as ‘absolutely magnificent’ …incredible voice, perfect stage presence…I really, really enjoyed the show.”

Lani is currently a hot topic among industry insiders. Rumors have it that Lani is planning to move to a bigger Las Vegas resort like The Venetian or Paris.

But there is still no official word yet from Lani as Voices continues to be a moneymaking nightly spectacle five times a week (except Tuesdays and Wednesdays) at 7:30 p.m. at Hilton’s Shimmer Showroom.

RP ‘miracle’ in world football tilt

By Sunshine Lichauco de Leon
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Filed Under: Football, Children, Good news

MANILA, Philippines—When the Philippine team returned from the first annual Street Child World Cup (SCWC) in Durban, South Africa, last week with the winners’ cup in hand, they had more than just a victory in international football to celebrate.

Capturing the Street Child World Shield cup—after beating South Africa (2-1) in the finals—and having the distinction of being the first Filipino team to defeat Brazil (6-2) in an international indoor football tournament were certainly reasons for the Philippines to be very proud.

But for the members of the team, dubbed the “Philippine Miracles,” the smiles on their faces came from what they experienced during their journey from underdogs to champions.

They learned that with determination, hard work and unity, anything was possible.

Against the teams from South Africa, Brazil, India, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Nicaragua, the Filipinos were not only much shorter and smaller than most of their rivals—they also came from a country that was 169th in the FIFA (international football federation) world rankings.

“We are a football team from a basketball country that was participating in an international indoor football tournament made up of teams from football countries ... But when you believe so much in a project, and you pray, you know that miracles can happen,” said Ed Formoso, one of the team organizers.

Perceptions that the Filipinos would be the least likely to win the cup changed soon after they began passing the ball.

“It was the skill and grace (with which) they played against taller opposition that started to get them noticed, then the discipline and the lovely Filipino smiles they wore the whole time,” said Craig Burrows, one of the team organizers.

Undaunted by defeats

Their first games were against two powerhouses, the United Kingdom and Tanzania. Although they lost both matches (4-2 and 2-0), they won over many fans from all sides with their professionalism and friendliness.

The losses could have also demoralized a lesser team, but the former Filipino street children (aged 14-16) held themselves together.

“The secret is unity. We always show one another that we are one no matter what happens,” team captain Erica Mae Inocencio said.

Noriel Pineones, the team’s top scorer who made six goals during the tournament, said that instead of crying, “we showed that the Philippine Miracle team was always smiling.”

Burrows and Formoso organized the Philippines Street Child World Cup team under the auspices of the Henry V. Moran Foundation. Financial support came from corporate sponsors as well as generous individuals simply referred to as “ninongs,” or godparents.
Winning hearts

Burrows explained why the Filipino team won the hearts of others.

“They practiced hard, showed discipline and a hunger to win even against people who are already playing football at an international level. They have incredible stamina and speed but also a faith that unites them,” Burrows said.

“Watching them lose the first match and then watching them dancing afterwards showed me that in life we have to respond to defeat in the same way as when we win. Their resilient Filipino nature gave them the heart to go on. They believed in themselves.”

The team didn’t simply play. They also visited a safari park, went to the beach with other children, saw the stadium that will host the FIFA World Cup in June and visited local schools, where they were greeted as celebrities.

They shared rooms with the Ukraine team, who spoke no English, but “they somehow managed to have animated conversations with big smiles and got on so well together,” Burrows said.

Burrows shared one touching moment.

“One of our players did not have the best interpersonal relationship skills but seeing him struggling to communicate with other young people who could not speak English was a real joy. It meant he had to be as articulate as he could. One day, he actually spoke in front of a school class. It was a beautiful moment.”

Upon winning the final game against South Africa, the Filipino players went around the pitch carrying the South African flag in a sign of friendship.

The Filipino players also attended a conference where they and the other teams discussed the rights of street children. They were encouraged to find their own voice without adult intervention.

Team coach Jess Landagan, a former street child himself who grew up to become a national football player, said handling the team was an unforgettable experience for him.

The team thanked those who made their dream come true: Damian and Laura Dunn, Sarah Mcleod, Sandy Moran, Miles Roces, Freddy Gonzalez, Mike Camahort, Marissa Concepcion, Monchu Garcia, Manuel de Jesus, Inaki Alvarez, Carla Ramsey, Dolores Cheng, Fernando Peña, Robs Delfino, Stephen Davis, Dicky & Cathy Rivilla, Manny Pacquiao, Danny Moran, Chris & Natalie Pickering, Anton Cancio, Angela Zalamea, Libet Virata, Camille Samson, Anne Preysler, Tess Maquera, Elizabeth Silverio, John Harton, Elizabeth Kramer, Mitzi Olondriz, John Tiong, Rene Godinez, Tetta Matera, Simon Paterno, Cecilia Suarez, Ina Ayala, Angela Padilla, Emilia Vorbeck, Georges Ramirez, Poch & Mitos Camahort, Paul Atherton, Brendan Hughes, Tristan Eugenio, Mike Moran, Melinda Quimson, Christopher Gaston, Rhona Macasaet, Chris & Linds Boughton, Rhett Eala, Kevin and Rose Anne Belmonte, Gigi Perrett, Lizette & Mikey Cojuangco, Pedro & Gina Roxas, Grace Alcid, Hans & Regina Sicat, Annie Ayllon, Karen Batungbakal, Globe Telecom, Tesoro’s, The Football Alliance Group, Smart Communications, Stone Baptist Church, Unilever, Rotary Street Children Foundation, Bayanihan National Dance Co., Springboard Foundation, Tuloy sa Don Bosco Street Children Village, Whitehouse Scientific, Asian Students Christian Foundation, Amici Pizza Pasta, Amos Trust, Deloitte, Deutsche Bank, Mitre, British Chamber of Commerce and flown to Durban, South Africa by the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (www.almt.org).

Filipina beauty queen wins another title in Vietnam (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/187557/filipina-beauty-queen-wins-another-title-in-vietnam)
04/02/2010 | 01:45 PM

A Filipina brought honor to the Philippines after winning the first Miss Asean TV Charm contest held in Vietnam last March.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Mutya ng Pilipinas-International 2008 Jonavi Raisa Quiray bested contestants from other Association of Southeast Asian Nation countries to bag the title in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi, the DFA said the contest was held March 17 to 22.

"She is the first ever winner of the pageant," the DFA said of Quiray.

It added Quiray also won the Best in Ao Dai Costume competition.

The contest was organized to usher Vietnam's Asean chairmanship in 2010 and other Asean major events to be held in the country this year.

It was also aimed at tightening the solidarity and promoting mutual understanding and friendship among ASEAN nations.

Each country was asked to send two contestants who are singers, dancers, models, broadcasters, or news editors.

The contestants competed in four categories: a traditional costume show, a talent contest, an ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) show, and a formal evening wear show on the last day of the pageant.

Aside from the contestants' performances, a video clip was presented, featuring the beautiful landscapes, architecture, handicrafts and cultural folk art of the different Asean countries. - RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV

Pacquiao in TIME's 'most influential' poll again (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/abs/20100403/tsp-pacquiao-in-time-s-most-influential-14daa3a.html)

ABS-CBN - Sunday, April 4

MANILA, Philippines – Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is again included in TIME Magazine’s poll for the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010.

The poll, which opened on April 1, has Pacquiao joining global personalities like US President Barack Obama, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Conan ‘O Brien and Oprah Winfrey in the list.

As of April 3, Pacquiao was ranked No. 20 behind satire host John Stewart.

He had a total number of 4,663 votes with an average rating of 91. This is his second appearance on the list.

Pacquiao, a 7-division champion and reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight king, finished No. 20 in TIME Magazine's list of most influential “Heroes & Icons” in 2009.

Other categories listed in TIME’s 100 are Leaders & Revolutionaries, Builders & Titans, Artists & Entertainers, and Scientists & Thinkers.

In the Philippines, Pacquiao is currently engaged in another form of battle. He is running against Roy Chiongbian for the lone congressional seat of Sarangani province in Mindanao.

"An idol in his native Philippines, Pacquiao has become an international sports god, drawing much-needed fans to the fading profession of boxing,” TIME Magazine said.

“For now, the Filipino, a champion in seven weight classes, is focusing on a prize he has tried but failed to win before: a seat in his country's legislature,” it added.

Filipina doctor is face of US hospital in Arizona
Posted on April 3rd, 2010 under We are Pinoys!

Everywhere you go in Phoenix, Arizona, you will see noted Filipino-American doctor Maria Divina Soriano, whose photo is prominently displayed in bus exteriors, bus stops, billboards and newspaper ads.

The Manila-born internist is the face of one of the John C. Lincoln-Deer Valley Hospital in Arizona, which honored Soriano as Physician of the Year in 2007.

“I’m very happy to be of service to the people of Arizona,” she added, “and to be recognized for doing what I love to do is a big bonus.”

Soriano, 44, is a 1990 medical graduate of the University of Santo Tomas. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the American College of Physicians, she is a board member of John C. Lincoln Network and vice chief of the medical staff of the hospital.

Soriano migrated to the U.S. in 1993 and took her residency at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she finished with highest honors and was named Resident of the Year.
In 1999, she was hired by the University of Pittsburgh Health System to be one of its primary care physicians. In 2002, she and her husband left Pennsylvania for Phoenix to become hospitalists, whose practice is solely in the hospital. They later formed the Independent Hospitalists group.

“I’m really honored and happy to be chosen as the face of the hospital,” Soriano said. “For them to choose me, a Filipino, to promote the hospital is a big honor.”

It has also become a source of teasing among colleagues. “Some of the nurses and pharmacists were joking that if I lose my job as a physician, I can always go into modeling full time,” Soriano quipped. “Some also asked how much I got paid for posing in those ads.”

Her husband, Dr. Frankie Peralta, a Michigan-born Fil-Am internist at the same hospital, jokes that he is also part of the hospital ad campaign, except that “his face was pasted on the wheels of the buses,” Soriano laughed.

Vanessa Hudgens: ‘I love being a Filipina ’

LOS ANGELES -- When we first saw Vanessa Hudgens as she came out for lunch in the courtyard garden of a hotel, she instantly reminded us of Rosemarie Sonora and Sheryl Cruz.

The Filipino-American actress headed to our table to say hi to Rich Ross, president of Disney Channel Worldwide. We had just discussed with Rich the phenomenal success of “High School Musical” all over the world, including the Philippines. Rich stood up to chat with Vanessa, who with summery blouse looked perfect in this sun-dappled outdoors setting.

Half an hour later, Vanessa sat down for a press con. The 18-year-old singer-actress, her on- and off-screen boyfriend Zac Efron (who is also the high school heartthrob in the movie “Hairspray”) and the rest of the gang are back in “High School Musical 2” (“HSM2”), whose predecessor caught everyone by its success on many levels: over 100 million viewers; 7 million plus DVD copies sold; the soundtrack CD topped the charts last year; and the concert tour in the US, Canada and several Latin American countries were sold-out affairs.

The best assets of Vanessa, whose mother Gina Guangco is a Filipina, are her dark eyes, which twinkle when she smiles or laughs. Her brunette hair was artfully arranged in the back. She wore several bracelets on both wrists.

Patrombon rises to top 50 in World Jr. tennis rankings
Posted on April 8th, 2010 under Sporting Gold

Jeson Patrombon
Jeson Patrombon has joined the elite top 50 club of top junior tennis players in the latest junior rankings released by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) – big thanks to his runner-up finish in the recent Dunlop Japan Open Championship.
The17-year-old whose ranking has jumped to No. 48 from No. 76, hopes to continue improving his ranking with his coming campaign in the tough European circuit where he’s scheduled to play in the Grade 1 Torneo Internazionale Citta Di Santa Croce in Italy on May 10, followed by the Grade A Trofeo Bonfiglio also in Italy on May 17 and the Grade 1 Astrid Bowl Championships in Belgium on May 24.
Patrombon’s rise was close to phenomenal as he was ranked only at No. 242 last November.
In fact, he’s now one rung higher than the country’s No. 1 junior player Francis Casey Alcantara.
Following his semifinals showings in the Thailand and Malaysian tournaments, Patrombon’s confidence soared as he finished runner-up in the just concluded tournament in Nagoya, Japan – one of the toughest events in the junior circuit.
Patrombon has to perform consistently in order to better the achievement of Alcantara, who reached as high as No. 17 following his doubles victory in the juniors division of the Australian Open last year.
“I’m happy that all the hard work in training and competition finally paid off,” said Patrombon in Filipino. “I did not expect that I will make it this far.”

inoy soap operas a big hit from China to Africa

Pangako sa Yo
In the most recent past, the Filipino television audience have been hooked on drama series from countries in South America, particularly Mexico and Argentina, Asia, most specially Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.
Now, it’s the Philippines’ turn to show the world what this small country in the Pacific can offer.
While Filipinos around the world have been enjoying drama series from the Kapamilya network, little many Filipinos in the archipelago know that ABS-CBN programs have become hits in other nations as well.
Recently, Pangako sa ‘Yo was telecast on China’s national television and, believe it or not, it rated second over all local and foreign programs airing in the country. Ten years after Filipinos became so attached to the Kristine Hermosa-Jericho Rosales tandem, the now classic teleserye still appealed to the Chinese audience and even hit the Top 30 list in the national weekly ranking, covering over 2,000 channels and capturing 1.3 billion viewers.
Prior to China, the love story of Angelo Buenavista and Yna Macaspac have mesmerized people in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia and even Africa. As Cambodian Nai Hiu Mei recounts, “The teleserye, broadcast here dubbed in Khmer, was so popular that many Cambodian babies have been named Angelo.” The Times of Zambia writer Meluse Kapatamoyo wrote, “The series has become a topic of discussion among families, friends and even neighbors who daily ponder on how the show would end.” René Lötter of One Africa Television said, “When is Pangako sa’Yo coming back?’ I wish I could get a dollar each time I get that question. From teenager to grandma, from household organizers to tax consultant—it’s gripped people across all genders.”

Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin
Aside from Pangako sa ‘Yo (known internationally as The Promise), several other homegrown entertainment programs have been brought to a broader global audience through the pioneering efforts of ABS-CBN Global’s International Sales and Distribution (ISD).
Carried by the biggest state television broadcaster in China, Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin (a.k.a. Only You) aired on primetime, alongside Pangako sa ‘Yo. Meanwhile, Sana Maulit Muli (a.k.a. Chances), Maging Sino Ka Man (a.k.a. More Than Love) and Gulong ng Palad (a.k.a. Stand for Love) are expected to be aired in the Republic soon.
Also earning international recognition worldwide is the Angel Locsin-Piolo Pascual starrer Lobo (a.k.a. She-Wolf: The Last Sentinel). In the recently concluded 2009 International Emmy Awards, She-Wolf was recognized for the stellar performance of Angel Locsin who received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress. This recognition is second for the show, which won the Best Telenovela award at the 30th BANFF World Television Festival in Toronto, Canada last year. Currently, the program is enjoying wide viewership in Brunei and is anticipated to be released in other countries in Indo-China, Asia, Europe and Africa this year.
ABS-CBN shows are subtitled and dubbed in several languages, including English, Turkish, Khmer, Mandarin, and French.
One of the programs dubbed in French is Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay (a.k.a. La Longue Attente in French and The Long Wait in English) will cater to French-speaking viewers in Africa and Europe. According to International Sales and Distribution Head Reena Garingan, ABS-CBN programs are easily bought because they resonate to the African audience. “Our writers, directors and actors are able to capture real-life experiences on screen. Our stories show pain and suffering but in the end, give viewers a glimpse of hope. As we demonstrate that obstacles and fear may be overcome, we help mend the broken African spirit,” Garingan said.

Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay
For more than a decade, ISD has been the premier source of top quality programs from the Philippines, making ABS-CBN Global the first and the biggest Philippine content distributor in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia-Pacific and the leading Asian distributor in Africa.
Through ISD, Kapamilya shows have become so popular among non-Filipinos that ABS-CBN is now regarded as a market mover and thought leader in the field of broadcasting in Africa. In fact, Garingan recently attended a content and distribution forum to speak in front of leading journalists and broadcasters in Africa and discuss the social and ethical responsibilities of media professionals.
Indeed, ABS-CBN has made its mark in the global market. Through the efforts of ABS-CBN Global’s International Sales and Distribution group, homegrown Pinoy entertainment has been given a chance to shine on the global stage.

It just doesn’t pay for humans to be too clean (http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/living/health/702514-224/it-just-doesnt-pay-for-humans-to.html)

Microbes are people, too.

Well, not exactly. But after a century or so dedicated to trying to sanitize everything we ingest, touch or sit on, researchers are coming to a new appreciation for the favors many bacteria – aka germs – do for our biological function.

It’s well established that our digestive systems falter if we don’t keep a proper balance of helpful bacteria in our gut – and a whole industry of probiotic foods and supplements has sprung up to do just that.

Researchers have concluded that the major reason humans – and most higher mammals – have an appendix is because the little cul-de-sac at the end of the intestines evolved to serve as a refuge for populations of the essential bacteria should some catastrophe wipe them out in the rest of the tract.

For more than a decade, allergists and immune-system specialists have been talking about the “hygiene hypothesis” that suggests early exposure to infectious agents, parasites and allergens helps build a healthy immune system.

Numerous studies have shown that immune problems such as asthma, hay fever and a host of other conditions related to inflammation are affected by everything from living in modern housing and day care attendance to being part of large families and living on a farm.

In one recent study, researchers at Northwestern University followed 3,000 Filipino children from a few months before birth through 22 years of age, analyzing their infection history and inflammatory response, particularly as marked by C-reactive protein. The protein increases in the blood during inflammation of the immune system and has been used as a warning sign for heart disease.

The researchers then compared the Filipinos to a group of young adults in the United States. They found that while the Filipinos suffered from far more infectious diseases as infants and children, by age 22, their levels of C-reactive protein were 80 percent less than in the American group.

“Our research suggests that ultra-clean, ultra-hygienic environments early in life may contribute to higher levels of inflammation as an adult, which in turn increases risk for a wide range of diseases,” said Thomas McDade, an associate professor of anthropology who led the study.

According to the World Health Organization, such autoimmune diseases as type-1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis are rare in most rural African and Asian populations, but that those rates go up when people from those populations migrate to more developed settings.

A British study published last year worked with mice and found that those with lice infestations had less hyperactive immune response than did animals without the parasites, bolstering claims that people have stronger allergic reactions in part because most of us live without such pests to desensitize us.

There’s even evidence that it isn’t wise to make our skin too clean. Studies of health care workers have found that excessive hand-washing with antimicrobial soap can actually damage the skin and make it easier for bacteria to hide and spread.

Researchers have also discovered that the germs on our hands aren’t like those on other hands – the typical human hand contains 150 species of bacteria, with only 13 percent shared by any two people.

Scientists at the University of Colorado have been using this information as a sort of germy fingerprint that could identify which person or persons had recently touched a particular object.

They’ve also noticed that the variety of bacteria found on our hands doesn’t change much even if people regularly wash them.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein found in the blood, the levels of which rise in response to inflammation.

Washington, DC deputy mayor a Filipina (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=569286&publicationSubCategoryId=68)

Valerie Santos is a Filipina in a hurry.

She wants to make a difference as Washington’s deputy mayor for planning and economic development and frets there are not enough hours in a day to get things done to bring growth and prosperity to the district.

Appointed in June 2009, she is one of the most visible and highest ranking Filipino Americans in public office.

Santos, 36, is responsible for implementing Mayor Adrian Fenty’s economic development vision and managing a development pipeline worth more than $13 billion comprising public-private housing, retail, office and parks projects throughout the district.

It’s a big job and she describes it variously as exhilarating, exciting, humbling and, for some perverse reason, fun.

In an interview with The STAR, she said her father Dante Santos was the eldest of nine children, all of whom grew up in a one-bedroom apartment in Pasig with their parents.

The Santoses had a small 10 x 10 ft. shop in a local market which sold sewing, quilting and embroidery supplies, buttons and clasps and threads.

“My grandparentsraised the family in a sewing notions store in a local palenke (market),” she said. “That’s how they put their children to school.”

She said her father, originally from Bulacan, emigrated to the United States in the 1960s after college in search of a better life and received his MBA at Santa Clara University in California.

Her mother Milagros was born and raised in Zamboanga, the eldest of five children. She also emigrated to the US in the 1960s, first to Cincinnati and later to California.

“Among the things I learned from my parents is the value of education and hard work,” Santos said.

Like many Filipinos who come to America, she said her parents worked hard to be able to send money home to help their families.

Her mother paid for the education of several of her siblings.

“She put off her life and didn’t get married until she was 40 to be able to help her family,” she said.

Valerie, born and raised in San Francisco, is an only child.

She is a graduate of Santa Clara University and earned her MBA at Harvard Business School and a Masters in Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

After finishing college in 1994 at the age of 20 she went to the Philippines for one year to get to know the rest of her family – she has 22 first cousins on her father’s side and 15 first cousins on her mother’s side – and to give back to the community.

She joined the Jesuit Volunteers Philippines (JVP) Foundation, Inc., a volunteer organization that sends fresh graduates and young professionals to under-resourced communities nationwide for one year.

Volunteers are prepared and assisted by the foundation in developing the skills necessary to address basic community needs whether as teachers, campus ministers, parish or community development workers.

Santos was sent to Ateneo de Zamboanga where she taught three classes of freshmen English and one class of senior literature. She lived in a dorm and received a stipend equivalent to $120 a month.

“I have always been passionate about public service and about using my many privileges in life, whether they be the privilege of education or the privilege of being born in the US to help people,” she said.

Philippine Ambassador Willie Gaa called on her two weeks ago and found her to be a “very decisive and personable lady.”

She is also “substantantive and supportive” and willing to be more active in the Filipino-American community in the area, Gaa said.

Maurice Owens said she and about a dozen other Filipino-American community leaders in the Washington area also met with Santos in October soon after her confirmation as deputy mayor, and described her as “approachable, welcoming, charming and vivacious.“

“It’s nice to see a smart Filipina up there,” Owens said.

Prior to becoming deputy mayor, Santos served as the Planning and Economic Development Office’s chief operating officer. Before joining the district government she worked with real estate groups where she specialized in urban public-private development.

According to the official District of Colombia website, the Office of the Deputy Mayor is charged with bringing federal, nonprofit and private and community partners together to expand the district’s economic base, attract and retain businesses, bring good-paying jobs for residents and promote the city as a competitive, welcoming place to do business.

“The scope of what I do is what gets me excited – developing affordable housing for people, looking to improve our waterfront, finding more jobs for our work force – there is such a breath of issues and diversity across the city that we have an opportunity to touch all aspects of life while advancing the mayor’s core mission of increasing tax revenue and promoting growth,” she said.

Santos visits the Philippines regularly.

“I was there in 2003 and 2006 and it’s definitely time to pay a visit again,” she said.

Her paternal grandmother, Iluminada or Lola Luming as she calls her, still lives in Pasig on Lopez Jaena street.

Santos speaks emotionally of the sacrifices her grandparents and parents went through to improve the lot of the family and says that “even when I am having the worst possible day, I know how fortunate I am compared with those who came before me.”

“People tell me it’s exciting to see a Filipino-American doing well because of hard work and all that. I feel honored but don’t consciously try to see myself as a role model,” she said.

It is unfortunate Filipinos have to go overseas to make their mark because “with so much energy and intellect in the Philippines all one needs there is a chance,” she said.

Asked what her normal day was like, she replied, “I don’t know if I have one. I typically work 14 hours a day and I find the work fun.”

“But I do make time for friends, for other things that are important to me.”

She relaxes by reading, spending time with friends and cooking for them and hanging out with her dog and her cat.

She says she is a good cook but cooks Filipino food only when her parents visit her.

With White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford and Deputy Mayor Valerie Santos leading the way, Filipinas are making inroads in the capital city of the world’s only superpower.

MANILA, Philippines—Davao del Sur’s Chenee Capuyan bagged the Grand Prize in the “3rd Voice of McDonald’s” singing competition held on Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

She beat two other finalists, Jin Hur of Goyang City, South Korea, and Jesus Molinares of Lima, Peru.

Capuyan won the judges’ nod with her rendition of “Stand Up For Love,” originally sung by Destiny’s Child. One of the judges, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Estelle, said, “I’ve worked with some of the best singers in the music industry and I can honestly say I was blown away by Chenee’s talent and passion.”

The other judges were Troy Carter, chair and CEO of Atom Factory Inc., whose clients include Lady Gaga; Walter Afanasieff, Grammy Award-winning music producer whose credits include recordings by Mariah Carey and Celine Dion; and prominent entertainment attorney Ken Hertz.

10,400 contestants

Capuyan bested 10,400 worldwide contestants who were all McDonald’s employees like herself.

She took home $25,000 as cash prize. The second and third prize winners received $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. A $1,000 donation was also made in her name to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), which helps Filipino public school students acquire good reading skills.

As added bonus, Capuyan received an all-expense-paid trip to Los Angeles with two VIP tickets to the Lady Gaga “Monster Ball Tour” concert in August this year courtesy of Troy Carter and the Atom Factory.

She’s likewise invited to record a demo in Los Angeles with Afanasieff, and a chance to meet Sir Elton John. She also got a new MacBook and iPod Touch from Coca-Cola.

The “Voice of McDonald’s” is a global contest to discover, recognize and reward the most talented singers among McDonald’s restaurant employees. In 2005, more than 2,000 joined the competition. In 2007, more than 3,000 signed up. Capuyan is the second Davaoeña to reach the finals after Mary Margaret Yu bagged second place in 2008.

UP wins best of the best

By Amy R. Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:32:00 04/24/2010

Filed Under: Energy, Awards and Prizes

MANILA, Philippines—The decision of five college students to rest all their hopes of winning on the Lopez-led Energy Development Corp. proved to be a wise one.

Raymund Li, Choerleen Solema, Jose Mari Punzalan, Pamela Li and Rachel Sison of the University of the Philippines College of Business Administration won the fourth Global Investment Research Challenge held recently in Hong Kong, for their presentation on EDC, the country’s largest producer of geothermal energy.

The Philippine group bested all other prestigious universities worldwide in the competition—a proof that Filipinos can hold their own against the best schools in the world.

In particular, the UP students managed to overcome tough competition from Brigham Young University from the Americas region; Fordham University from the New York region; and University of Cape Town from Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region before being declared the global winner.

This was the first time that the Philippine team won the Global IRC. Winners from the past three competition came from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Babson College in Boston, USA.

The Investment Research Challenge (IRC) is a worldwide annual competition organized by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute to provide university students with “unparalleled real world experience in equity research and company analysis.”

This year, more than 90 CFA Institute member societies hosted local competitions, with over 425 universities and 2,000 students from many of the world’s top finance schools participating. Regional competitions were held in the Americas, Asia Pacific, EMEA and New York to determine the four teams that competed in the global final challenge.

Prior to winning the global championship, UP had to also hurdle competition from schools in the Philippines and then in Asia-Pacific.

For the regional finals, UP bested 15 other universities from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Korea, India, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore and Sri Lanka to earn the right to represent Asia-Pacific in the global finals.

EDC a ‘good buy’

The UP students’ presentation and recommendation on EDC as a “good buy” had impressed and convinced the panel of judges, composed of investment industry experts worldwide.

In their presentation, they recommended that investors buy shares of the geothermal company—which is also the world’s second largest producer of geothermal energy next to Chevron.

The group cited EDC’s stock price’s upside potential given its industry leadership, the country’s power supply shortage problems and the incentives that the company can avail under the Renewable Energy law.

“Winning the Global IRC is very special for us and we are grateful for all the help and support we received throughout the process. We hope this will help raise recognition of the quality of the financial services talent in the Philippines,” says Raymund Siegfrid O. Li, a UP team member.

“Participating in the Global IRC was an incredible learning experience for us—especially since we are undergraduate students and the challenge requirements went beyond what is being taught in our current courses. We are grateful for the practical insight we gained through this once-in-a-lifetime experience and are confident it will create new opportunities for us,” Li adds.

For his part, EDC president and COO Richard Tantoco vowed to further support worthy projects that will help students gain knowledge and acquire hands-on experience in equity research.

“This is a very good exercise in developing future investment and financial analysts. I am happy that EDC is able to participate in undertakings that would again put the Philippines in a very distinguished position and make every Filipino beam with pride,” Tantoco adds.

Meanwhile, John Rogers, president and CEO of CFA Institute, also congratulated the UP team for winning the Global IRC.

“I was extremely impressed with the final four teams’ research and presentations and would like to applaud their skill and tenacity. We at CFA Institute hope that the experience has helped to instill ethics and best practices in what may be the next generation of investment professionals,” Rogers says.

Rogers further said that since its inception in 2007, the competition has gone from “strength to strength, thanks to the determination and commitment of universities, students, industry professionals, and societies from across the world.”

In honor of this achievement, the students also received $10,000 for their university.

Philippine team wins gold in Asian dragon dance
(The Philippine Star) Updated April 24, 2010 12:00 AM

The triumphant Philippine Dragon and Lion Dance team headed by Philippine Ling Nam Athletic Federation president Johnny Lee (in white shirt), with chief instructor William Soon (left, next to Lee).

MANILA, Philippines - It was a moment of triumph for the Philippine dragon and lion dance team when it won the much coveted, first-ever gold medal (Luminous Dragon Dance category) at the 2010 Asian Dragon and Lion Dance Competition held in Miaoli County, Taiwan, on March 4 to 8. This Asian competition was participated in by nine teams from China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong, host Taiwan, and the Philippines.

There’s more to this ancient dance/sports of China that is well-liked by people all over the world beyond the Chinese New Year celebration that Filipinos are so familiar with. Composed mostly of young volunteers, it takes teamwork, discipline, grace and agility to train for this rigorous art form. The dragon and lion dance competition was composed of three categories — standard routine, freestyle routine, and the most visually exciting and difficult, the luminous dragon routine.

The 10-minute luminous act was performed in the darkened arena with ultraviolet spotlight to highlight the glow-in-the-dark spectacle of the dragons, with team members dressed in black. The Philippine team simply thrilled the audience with their artistry and daring yet precise movements.

The Philippine delegation was headed by Johnny Lee, president of the Philippine Ling Nam Athletic Federation, and chief instructor William Soon. Team members included Jobie Kaneesha Ko, Richard Ng, Rolando Villamora, Tyrone King, Oliver Ngo, Jeremy Ong, Luigi Bondoc, Jeff Kendrick Ko, Lyndon Yu, Rosendo Sayson and Carlos Faa Jr. The musicians were Napoleon Ngo, Kaho James Wong, Ravi Jiandani, Robertson Fadrigar and Nina Felichi Fabros.

Founded 54 years ago, the Philippine Ling Nam Athletic Federation has been actively promoting these twin sports and art forms in the country, and has led 13 other dragon and lion dance teams to form the Philippine Dragon and Lion Dance Sports Association with Francisco Peng San as chairman.

Filipina woman scientist receives L'Oreal Unesco award

Created therapeutic products from snail toxins

http://gulfnews.com/news/world/philippines/filipina-woman-scientist-receives-l-oreal-unesco-award-1.619482

Manila: A woman scientist who tamed the deadliest toxins of cone snails that abound in the Philippines into therapeutic products that could ease pain, soothe epileptic attacks and weaken myocardial infarction has become a national treasure among Filipinos.

Last March, Lourdes "Luly" Jansuy Cruz, PhD, was one of five internationally acclaimed women who received at the Unesco headquarters in Paris $100,000 each and the coveted L'Oreal-Unesco Awards for Women in Science.

Her passion for the deadliest toxins conus geographicus, one of the 500 species found in the Indo-Pacific areas, began in the 1970s, when her associate, Dr. Baldomero "Toto" Olivera, an avid seashell collector, heard an intriguing story from fishermen that no one should be mesmerised by the beauty of conus, also known as Via Mare. It is one of the most expensive and well sought shells in the world. The fishermen said it could kill.

Working non-stop at the laboratory of the prestigious University of the Philippines, Jansuy-Cruz, Olivera, and two other associates, Olivia Veron and Lucy So found in 1976 some 100 to 200 conotoxins or venom peptides that came from the harpoon-like hollow tooth of conus.

Therapeutic products

From their chart, the venom peptides overflowed that the scientists started using Filipino names instead of Latin-derived names for them, such as contulakin (to awaken) and conantokin (to make drowsy).

In 2006, seven therapeutic products based on six different conus venom peptides were made for pain, epilepsy, and heart problems, which were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Jansuy-Cruz and Olivera have 13 patents of various contoxin or conotoxin peptides with possible medical application. One of their major plans is to use it to ease the pain of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease. A total of 80 patents have been given to all scientists for the medical application of conus.

In 2001, she established the Rural Livelihood Incubation (LINC) project to help Aytas, an ethnic group, in Morong, Bataan, in central Luzon.

Armed with science and technology, she has been helping fishermen and farmers. She has fought for studies on awareness about biodiversity and conservation of watershed areas in poor rural communities.

Too bad, the multi-awarded scientist is "not a household name in the Philippines," lamented Philippine Star columnist Amy Pamintuan.

"There were no parades to welcome her upon her return from Paris. Politicians did not line up to be photographed with her, and there has been no rush among big businessmen to provide more funding for her research," Pamintuan said.

Filipina rock band singer plays Kim in NZ’s Miss Saigon
Posted on April 29th, 2010 under We are Pinoys!
http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Ivy-Rose-Padilla.jpg
Ivy Rose Padilla

The star of the recently concluded Miss Saigon musical in New Zealand was Ivy Padilla, a former rock band singer turned stage actress.

She quit as lead singer of the local rock band Strawberry Fields and was living in New Zealand when she casually walked into an audition for a Wellington production of “Miss Saigon.”

She couldn’t believe she bagged the lead role of Kim, the same one that Lea Salonga originally played in 1989 and which won for the latter a slew of international awards.

The Wellington production reportedly had a successful 16-night run which ended last week. Padilla is still overwhelmed by the experience, and is now eyeing to audition for the film version.

Ivy said singing in a rock band helped her a great deal when she auditioned for the role of Kim, “I had been exposed to different singing styles and techniques. The experience of live performances in Manila built my confidence. I learned to project my voice and manipulate it to suit a particular scene without straining my vocal cords.”

She stressed that she got interested in musical theater, when she first heard that Lea Salonga was playing Kim in the original Broadway production, “I bought a copy of the soundtrack- which I listened to constantly at home. At that point, I realized I wanted to do the same thing.”

Ivy hopes that after her stint in Wellington, she will be able to join the production that is set to play around New Zealand. That would be great, although there are a lot of things to be taken into consideration for everyone in the cast.”

Another talented Filipina on the world stage and many more to come.

Davaoeña wins Global Singing
Competition in Orlando, Florida
Mindanao Daily Mirror
May 01, 2010

Filipinos stood proud once again as Davao del Sur’s very own Chenee Capuyan bagged the grand prize in the Voice of McDonald’s Season 3 singing competition held last April 22 in Orlando, Florida.

The Voice of Mc Donald’s is a worldwide contest exclusive to McDonald’s crew and restaurant managers. It has become an international stage to discover, recognize and reward the most talented singers among the 1.6 million McDonald’s restaurant employees all over the world. The Voice of McDonald’s is only one of the ways the company solidifies its commitment to employees by making all McDonald’s restaurants a fun and great place to work in. In 2005, more than 2,500 employees entered the first competition, and in 2007, more than 3,600 singers entered. For this 3rd season, more than 10,400 employees joined the competition.

In the Philippines, McDonald’s employees have always been strong contenders in the competition. Chenee is now the second Filipina from Davao to compete in the Voice of McDonald’s finals after Mary Margaret Yu won first runner up in Season 2 back in 2008. According to President and CEO Kenneth Yang, “We at McDonald’s Philippines have always supported the competition and strongly encourage our employees to join because we see this as a great way to recognize their talents and reward their hard work. The opportunities we provide our employees show just why McDonald’s is a great place to be.”

Yang added, “In behalf of your entire McDonald’s family, congratulations on winning the Voice of McDonald’s Season 3; we are all so proud of you. We hope that you will continue to be an inspiration to other employees and to young people everywhere to never stop dreaming and just keep going.”

Christian a big hit in Indonesia, wins TV game show
Posted on May 5th, 2010 under Entertainment Success

Filipino pop star Christian Bautista is making waves in Indonesia.

The balladeer recently guested in Indonesia’s top-rating dating game, “Take Celebrity Out,” where he became one of the celebrity male contestants.

The dating game, which is a franchise of the Fremantle Media, tasked the Filipino singer to search for “love” among the 30 famous single ladies – including the host of the show, Yuanita, who joined because of her huge crush on Christian.

The episode ended with the audience picking Christian and actress Smitha, who both took home five million rupiah in cash (more or less, 25, 000 pesos).

Christian Bautista has established his name among the superstars in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. He and Indonesian soap singer-superstar Bunga Citra Lestari recently sang a Filipino love song together that’s topped the music and video charts.

The carrier single, Please Be Careful with My Heart (the hit love song of Jose Mari Chan), was sung in Bahasa and English. Its part of a 10-track album released earlier this year by Indonesia’s Aquarius Records.

Bautista made a name for himself in Indonesia with songs such as “The Way You Look At Me”, “Invincible” and “Hands To Heaven” topping the charts.

It's already on Number 2 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs Chart for the issue dated May 15th (http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100?tag=chscr1#/charts/dance-club-play-songs?tag=chdrawer). The chart is compiled by Billboard exclusively from playlists submitted by nightclub disc jockeys who must apply and meet certain criteria to become "Billboard-reporting DJs (from Wiki).

I hope she overtakes Rihanna, who's on the top spot right now. Just being in the top ten of this chart is already a big deal for someone like Charice who's just starting her career. Madonna had 40 number 1 hits on this chart. :okay:

Charice already got on the Hot 100 and peaked at ~50s with her first single Note to God.

She peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year with her US debut song 'Note to God' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Note_to_God). Konti na lang sana, may Top 40 hit na sya. I think the only Pinoy who ever reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 is Apl de Ap as part of the Black Eyed Peas, hehe.

The fifth annual A Fine Romance benefit presented by the Motion Picture & Television Fund took place on May 1. The event was hosted by Hugh Jackman. Adam Shankman directed, with musical direction by John Mauceri. In attendance were a number of Broadway stars, including Jackman, Lea Salonga, Aaron Tveit, Joel Grey, Cheyenne Jackson, Kelli O'Hara, and Leslie Uggams.

A heartfelt inspiration of entertainment industry visionaries, the Motion Picture & Television Fund began with a simple coin box in Hollywood where industry workers would deposit spare change for their fellow colleagues. Right from the start, our mission has been "We Take Care of Our Own."

The Motion Picture & Television Fund was created by such industry luminaries as Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith, who realized the need for reaching out to those in the entertainment industry who fell upon hard times. In 1921, the Motion Picture Relief Fund (MPRF) was incorporated with Joseph M. Schenck as first president, Mary Pickford as vice president and the Reverend Neal Dodd as administrator, each with a benevolent spirit intent on providing assistance to those in the motion picture industry who were in need.

The Motion Picture & Television Fund mission remains the same: to protect and preserve the health and quality of life of those who devote so much of their lives to a career in the entertainment industry. And so we turn to members and friends of the industry to help fulfill this mission by Taking Care of Our Own. Great vision is powerless without passion. Donations, large and small, are vital to MPTF's ability to provide services to industry members today, and make dreams of tomorrow a reality.

Charice’s 'Pyramid' tops Billboard Dance/Club Play chart (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/256867/charice-s-pyramid-tops-billboard-danceclub-play-chart)

Filipino singer Charice scores her first number one hit in the Billboard charts this week with "Pyramid," the promotional single from her international debut album, "Charice."

"Pyramid" tops the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart by booting out Rihanna’s “Rude Boy.”

This is the second time a Filipina singer charted in the US Billboard Dance chart. The first time was in the '90s when "Do You Miss Me" by San Francisco-based Jocelyn Enriquez reached as high as No. 8.

The Dance/Club Play charts tracks down the hottest hip hop, dance and club tinged pop songs in the US.

Charice broke into the US pop music scene with the help of her TV appearances on the Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey shows. Her megawatt performances in these shows, coupled with the viral promotion her Youtube clips generated, led to her signing up with an US based record label.

Charice is also admired by the likes of hit-maker David Foster, Josh Groban and "Idol" finalist David Archuleta. Charice’s self-titled international debut album was released in the US yesterday, May 11. "Charice" was launched on the "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

With “Pyramid” topping the dance charts, the main charts at Billboard, namely the Hot 100 singles chart and 200 album chart could be next for Charice.

MANILA, Philippines—International pop star Charice Pempengco turned 18 yesterday and continues to scale new heights as her single “Pyramid” shot to No. 1 this week on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart, overtaking “Rude Boy” by Rihanna.

“Pyramid,” one of 14 tracks from Charice’s self-titled US debut album which hits record stores today in the United States and in the Philippines, has spent 11 weeks in the Billboard chart, where it was at No. 4 last week and No. 2 a few days ago.

Released in February as a digital single, “Pyramid” went on to be promoted in US dance clubs and radio stations with 17 remix versions produced by various club DJs.

It is being sold in the US as a digital download via iTunes and Amazon.com.

Written by a Swedish record production team composed of David Jassy, Lyrica Anderson, Niclas Molinder, Joacim Persson and Johan Alkenäs, “Pyramid” is a very impressive urban pop tune which also features R&B singer Iyaz from the Virgin Islands.

Filipinos who have heard the song on local radio and seen the video on YouTube must have noticed the fine quality of the lyrics, which compare love with the solid foundation that go into the building of a pyramid.

Charice herself is impressed with the way it was written. “First time ko maka- encounter ng ganyang klaseng lyrics,” she told the Inquirer. “Unique siya, kakaiba talaga.”

Today is also a special day for Charice, as she formally launches her album with a guest appearance on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.” This marks her fourth guest stint on the highest-rated and longest-running daytime television talk show in America.

LA Times Album review: Charice's self-titled debut (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2010/05/album-review-charices-selftitled-debut.html)
May 10, 2010 | 7:07 pm

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef013480aa3d87970c-pi

In the 2 1/2 years since Ellen DeGeneres featured this young Filipina singer on her popular talk show, Charice has racked up an impressive number of friends in high places: She's made several appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," sung duets with Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion and signed a record deal with David Foster, the soft-pop impresario behind Josh Groban and Michael Bublé.

Today she's scheduled to appear on "Oprah" yet again, this time alongside Justin Bieber. (Like Bieber, Charice built an initial following on YouTube, where displays of precocious vocal talent are outnumbered only by videos of babies tasting lemons.)

Charice's self-titled international debut contains input from some of those powerful pals, including Foster, the set's executive producer; "Replay" singer Iyaz and such A-list songwriters as Ryan Tedder, Diane Warren and Carole Bayer Sager. Inevitably, the result darts somewhat haphazardly from sleek dance-pop tunes aimed at girls Charice's age ("I Love You," "Pyramid") to schmaltzy slow jams seemingly intended for those girls' moms ("All That I Need to Survive," "Note to God").

If "Charice" lacks any kind of stylistic focus, though, it also feels like an honest showcase of the singer's voice, with relatively uncluttered arrangements and limited vocal processing. There's nothing especially interesting about that voice beyond its technical sophistication; any character is a product of inheritance, not invention. But its strength lives up to that of her collaborators.

A hit with the Winfrey set, 18-year-old Charice must connect with teens (http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5g5CpNUwO2aq-gm7LIBD2gdF63e0A)
By Nekesa Mumbi Moody (CP) – 6 hours ago

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Charice has already won over the mom market.
The teen wunderkind from the Philippines has been wowing audiences with her big voice and Celine Dion covers on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," ''The Oprah Winfrey Show" and others for the last two years. This week, she appeared on Winfrey's show for the fourth time.

But as she releases her self-titled debut album this week, Charice finds herself with a serious challenge as she tries to translate her success with an adult audience to her peers.

"I've been singing big songs, and this is the actually the first time they are going to hear me sing Justin Bieber-type of songs, Miley Cyrus-type of songs," the 18-year-old said recently in her heavily accented English. "I'm just excited for all the teenagers to hear my album."

Had Charice come along around the era of Dion or Whitney Houston, two of her idols, it would have been easier to make that move. Back then, big-ballad singers with towering voices dominated pop radio These days, it's the grooves behind the big voice that matter.

David Foster, the Grammy-winning mentor behind Charice, probably knows that better than anyone. A legendary producer who has made hits for Houston, Dion, Barbra Streisand, Toni Braxton and dozens of other top names, Foster understands his sound isn't what makes hits on pop radio anymore (though he still makes hits — he's the producer behind multiplatinum stars Josh Groban and Michael Buble).

"I knew if I produced the album, it would be adult-oriented. It would skew older. It would be maybe a quick, easy sale but, ultimately, it's very, very hard to skew younger after you start older, so we made a conscious decision to skew young first," he said. "I don't want to say that we crumbled under the pressure of having to go youthful, but I think we hit it square on."

Though Foster and his sister Jaymes are the album's executive producers, they left most of the music-making to younger writers and producers like Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, whose hits include Beyonce's "Halo" and Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love. The album's first single is "Pyramid," featuring singer Iyaz.

"I just thought like, teenagers are falling in love . . . they love this very catchy and very romantic words from all these young artists," Charice said. "That's why I thought that this album . . . they are gonna love it, all the lyrics, all the melody and all the music." So far, "Pyramid" is No. 2 on the dance charts but it hasn't yet translated to pop radio. Foster is aware of the challenge it takes to make a hit, but he thinks Charice has a lot to add to the scene.

"There is a lack of organic music right now, and it's fine — it's just the phase that we're in," he explains. "I think there is room for some more musicality."
There's no denying Charice has that. During a recent interview, the diminutive singer belted out "Pyramid" on request, performed a stirring rendition of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" for an audience of four, then continued to sing — even on her way out the door.

Singing has consumed Charice — born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco — since she was a child growing up in the Philippines. Raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appeared on TV talent shows in the Philippines and in South Korea. Fans posted clips of her on YouTube, and she became a sensation. Soon, she was invited to sing on "Ellen," then on "Oprah Winfrey," and linked up with Foster. So far, her rise has unfolded like a fairy tale. But Charice knows there are hurdles, like trying to capture U.S. audiences.

"It's really, really hard . . . there's a lot of great pop stars here. ... They're all talented," she said. "I don't know if Americans are going to love me because I'm from other country." But Foster said it's only a matter of time before there's an Asian superstar in the U.S., and he believes Charice might be the one. "Being a great singer is not enough, and she has the entire package," he said.

He adds: "She's a little bit like Michael Jackson in the head ... Michael Jackson was very soft-spoken and quiet and all that, but he was genius inside his head. He knew exactly where he was going, and she truly is the master of her own destiny."

That will be her herculean task. The teen/tween market is what drives the music industry, with proceeds from concerts, revenue merchandising at those concerts, plus CD sales and digital downloads. If her management team can aggressively promote, pursue, and capture that market segment, she's made it BIG!

Pinoy yuppies take 2 golds in dragon boat races
By Rodney J. Jaleco, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau
Posted at 05/19/2010 11:08 AM | Updated as of 05/19/2010 11:08 AM

WASHINGTON DC - Filipino-American rowers won all their races on the way to a two-gold finish at the 9th Dragon Boat Festival over the weekend.

The Filipino Young Professionals of Washington DC (FYP-DC) actually fielded 2 teams in this year’s staging of the Dragon Boat races on the Potomac River.

The Lapu Lapu Warriors won two gold medals in the 250-meter and 500-meter Open Group A events.

They also took the Community Cup in the Open Group category. It was their best finish since they first joined the Dragon Boat Festival 3 years ago.

The Rizal Revolutionaries made their debut in last weekend’s races. They placed 2nd place in the 250-meter and 500-meter mixed group exhibition events.

But it was the Lapu Lapu Warriors that displayed their mastery of the growing river sport. In 2009, they won the gold in the 250-meter “A Minor” and silver in the 500-meter “A Major” events; on their first year, they won a silver and bronze.

George Faustino, FYP-DC president, said they decided to form the second Fil-Am team to accommodate members who also wanted to compete.

He admitted they first joined the Dragon Boat Festival as a way of socializing and do something as a group.

The Dragon Boat Festival is timed with the yearly observance of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in Washington DC.

Faustino said the river race helps build camaraderie among Fil-Ams in the Metro DC region.

“This is good exposure for us,” he declared.

The FYP-DC is one of the most active Fil-Am organizations in the region. It helped mount one of the largest calamity relief drives in northern Virginia following the massive floods that devastated Metro Manila and parts of Luzon last year.

They also hold career workshops and other activities designed to help young Fil-Ams and strengthen links with other Asian American communities.

The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the life and death of Chu Yuan (340-278 BC) who according to folklore became so despondent over incompetent bureaucrats in his native state that he drowned himself in a river.

The people tried to rescue him but failed so every year, on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, there is a re-enactment of the frantic race to save Chu Yuan.

The Dragon Boat race was not introduced to the world until the 1970s. Today, some 50 million join the competitions across the globe.

Its success has been attributed to the low cost, ease of getting started in the sport and power to bond people together.

Many Dragon Boat teams are sponsored by corporations as a way to build teamwork among their workers.

...45,000. It's the second album in less than a year for the act, which dropped "Horehound" last July and debuted at No. 6 with 51,000 copies.

Carole King and James Taylor's "Live at the Troubadour" descends just two slots to No. 6 in its second week with 44,000 (down only 43%) and Usher's "Raymond v Raymond" rises three rungs to No. 7 with a little over 43,000 (down 16%). 18-year old singer Charice bounds onto the chart at No. 8 with her self-titled debut, selling 43,000 copies. The young singer visited both "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and QVC last week.

Filipino science students win big in California
By Yahoo! Southeast Asia Editors – May 20th, 2010

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/enriquezdave/mix/600yahoo_isefwinners.jpg

By Kim Patria, Yahoo! Southeast Asia staff writer

Dealing with local environmental and health problems using materials found locally, four incoming college students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) bagged multiple awards at an international science fair in California, May 14.

Marc Mapalo, 16; Jean Reni De Guzman, 17; Maria Clara Isabel Sia, 15; and Marc Arthur Jordan Limpiado, 16, who recently graduated from the PSHS Eastern Visayas Campus in Leyte, arrived on Monday bearing prizes from the Intel International Science Fair (ISEF) where more than 1,600 pre-college students from 59 participating countries competed.

The team of Mapalo, De Guzman, and Sia bagged fourth place in the team competition with their study on red tide while Limpiado’s research on the antibacterial properties of seaweed extracts also took home fourth place.

“We wanted to provide solutions to the problems in the country using locally available materials,” Mapalo said, explaining how they used natural materials like clay, shrimp peelings, and malunggay seeds to clot algae in water.

Algae are microscopic waterborne plants, an excess of which covers water surfaces, depriving fish and other marine life of oxygen.

“Red tide is a problem in the Philippines,” Sia said, citing the case of Sorsogon Bay in the Bicol region which is frequently declared a red tide area.

Meanwhile, Limpiado, who probed how seaweed extracts can potentially kill bacteria, said his findings suggest that the antibacterial properties of Philippine seaweeds are comparable with that of the generic antibiotic amoxicillin mixed with acid.

Limpiado stressed that he used crude extraction by simply soaking seaweeds in liquid solutions, saying that more advanced processes of extraction like liquid chromatography could produce better results.

“My study could also be further improved to include antiviral applications,” Limpiado added.

Intel Philippines Country Manager Ricky Banaag said two out of three of the projects sent by the Philippine delegation won, with Hanna Escobido and Brayl Ymbol of CARAGA State University Cabadbaran Campus also competing.

The Philippine team was selected through a nationwide competition in the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City in February.

Banaag added that some countries like Brazil had more than 30 participants.

Asked if the number of projects other countries send pose pressure on Intel Philippines to produce more research outputs, Banaag said they prefer quality over quantity.

Dr. Filma Brawner, president of the PSHS system, meanwhile, said all their students are expected to produce research projects as part of their school requirements.

Brawner added that the students’ winning projects will be pursued by PSHS by making some students work on the recommendations.

All four students are enrolling this June. Sia will take up computer science at the Ateneo de Manila University; Limpiado and Mapalo enrolling in UP Diliman under the chemical engineering and molecular biology and biotechnology programs respectively; and De Guzman taking up biology in UP Los Baños.

Billboard review of 'Pyramid' (http://www.billboard.com/news?tag=nav#/news/charice-featuring-iyaz-pyramid-1004091355.story)

Charice has long counted Oprah Winfrey as one of her biggest fans, but the 18-year-old captured a global audience in 2009 with her easy-listening ballad "Note to God." On "Pyramid," Charice-with help from Iyaz-delivers a radio-friendly number about defying the odds while displaying the kind of vocal range that other budding pop stars simply don't have. Written by a large group of mostly young songwriters, "Pyramid" ultimately sounds believable because of Charice's conviction in her delivery. "Pyramid, we built this on a solid rock/ It feels just like it's heaven's touch/ Together at the top, like a pyramid," she sings. An already high-charting dance mix loops Charice's "oh, oh, oh" runs to crank up the energy even further. Like any strong pop song, expect this one to scale multiple charts.

East West Players Show Scores With a Top-Notch Cast and a Compelling Story (http://www.ladowntownnews.com/articles/2010/05/21/entertainment/doc4bf72a7134cf0068218835.txt)

In Road to Saigon, (l to r) Joan Almedilla, Jenni Selma and Jennifer Paz detail how they went from obscurity to a starring role in the mega-musical Miss Saigon. The show is at East West Players through June 13. Photo by Michael Lamont.

Published: Friday, May 21, 2010 5:56 PM PDT
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The world premiere Road to Saigon is an embarrassment of riches, beginning with its trio of Joan Almedilla, Jennifer Paz and Jenni Selma — all of whom have portrayed the tragic heroine Kim in the mega-musical Miss Saigon. The three women, directed with a sense of intimacy by Jon Lawrence Rivera, relate stories of their journey to the show that made their careers.

None of the songs from Miss Saigon are included in the show at East West Players in Little Tokyo, but don’t worry — there’s plenty of music, as each woman performs songs that either inspired her or enhance an anecdote.

The concept, developed by Rivera, is simple enough. Have three of the most recognizable women ever to play Kim compose an autobiographical series of monologues, which are split into a series of categories, working backward from the first night they walked on stage as the lead in Miss Saigon.

While the women were all cast as Kim at a young age, the steps that got them there vary greatly.

The most fascinating, and funny, audition belongs to Paz, who had no professional experience before heading from Seattle to Toronto for tryouts. Without a headshot or resume, she stapled a paper with two high school credits on the back of a school photo. When asked if she would consider leaving college to go to Broadway, she replied, “I’m going to have to ask my mom.”

Almedilla’s break came thanks to her courage to face a tough audience on “Showtime at the Apollo.” Her televised appearance led to an audition for Les Misérables and then Saigon.

Selma was a child performer. She recounts being on the TV show “Star Search” at age 12, losing, and then almost giving up singing. But she kept at it and eventually became part of the “Kim Farm,” what the performers jokingly label the group of young women in the Saigon cast vying for the coveted role.

Many names from the Miss Saigon universe are mentioned, but none more than Lea Salonga, to whom an entire segment is devoted. Salonga, the first and most famous Kim, is a legend in the Philippines. Almedilla, Selma and Paz are all Filipino, and Salonga’s popularity and skill greatly influenced them.

Interspersed through the 95-minute show are a variety of wonderful songs, spanning popular genres and show tunes.

Selma, who has the biggest voice, belts “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from the musical Funny Girl and “Listen” from Dreamgirls. Almedilla, who sports a jazzier style, delivers a sassy rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” The smooth-singing Paz provides the most emotional number with “Anytime,” by William Finn.

Though these are skilled actresses, each seems less at home telling personal stories — in particular Almedilla, who stumbled a couple of times during her monologues. But Rivera elicits a laidback and conversational style, so a few miscues don’t feel jarring.

There aren’t any full dances per se, but veteran choreographer Kay Cole, an original cast member of A Chorus Line, adds movement to the group numbers, which are visually interesting without becoming distracting. Musical director Nathan Wang retains the integrity of every song, but also keeps them from sounding too familiar.

With nothing but a bare stage, three stools and Jeremy Pivnick’s understated lighting, Almedilla, Selma and Paz flood the theater with vivid tales of young stars in the making, and a series of songs that evoke tears, laughter and every emotion in between.

Given its autobiographical nature, Road to Saigon may never be repeated. It’s also unlikely that another show with three leading ladies of this caliber will appear on a Downtown stage anytime soon.

Road to Saigon runs through June 13 at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts, 120 Judge John Aiso St., (213) 625-7000 or eastwestplayers.org.

Charice Lands In The Top 10 (http://www.antimusic.com/news/10/may/21Charice_Lands_In_The_Top_10.shtml)
05/21/2010

Charice landed the No. 8 slot on this week's Billboard charts with sales of 42,985 for her self-titled CD, it was confirmed today by 143/Reprise Records.
With her 4th appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show the day of release, followed by a half hour performance that evening on QVC, Charice has clearly captured the hearts of Americans of all ages--and Canada as well, where her CD debuted at No. 4.

"Pyramid," the first single (performed with Iyaz) was No. 1 last week on the Billboard Dance Charts and is currently being played on over 100 radio stations. Sales of "Pyramid" have jumped 384% the week of the CD's release.

The YouTube phenom's viral video of "Pyramid" has received well over six million views. There were also three million views of the official video which has been added into rotation on MTV. Charice is scheduled to perform on Regis & Kelly on June 16th.

"She stands barely five feet tall…but when pop singer Charice opens her mouth, out pours a voice as burly and sure as Whitney Houston's in her "I Will Always Love You" prime," raved the Daily News. "A powerhouse performance...the stuff of a young Celine, Whitney or Mariah," glowed People Magazine.

"This has been the most exciting week of my life," said Charice. "It's been such a dream come true for me and my family to have so much love from fans all around the world

Yes, in her case, her mother(a Catholic) married an Iglesia ni Kristo member and they separated when Charise and her brother were still young and now, they decided to become members of the Catholic church formally. I don't know the real story, but it seems like that. I have to ask the fanatics at home for the real story. :D

Charice: The next Celine Dion?

By Shanon Cook, Special to CNNMay 19, 2010 -- Updated 1809 GMT (0209 HKT)

(CNN) -- She's only 4-foot-9, but Charice has a towering voice. When she applies her vocal pipes to a Whitney Houston ballad, she makes it look as easy as tying her shoelaces.

"She's incredible," says her producer and mentor, Grammy-winner David Foster. A veteran at nurturing new artists, he likens Charice's star power to another talent he helped discover. "It's like the first time I saw Celine Dion. It's exactly the same to me."

Even Dion is paying attention to the teen. In 2008, she invited Charice on stage at Madison Square Garden in New York for a duet of her hit song "Because You Loved Me." Charice, who has idolized Dion since she was 4, was only 16 at the time.

Last week, Charice celebrated her 18th birthday (we interviewed her a couple of weeks beforehand) by releasing her self-titled debut album in the United States.

She may have gotten her start singing power pop ballads in local contests in her native Philippines (which later translated to key performances for Oprah and Ellen), but her album has a more youthful, dance-pop feel. The lead single "Pyramid," featuring singer Iyaz, is in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's dance chart

Twin victories for Pinoys at the Shanghai Int’l Song Festival:cheers:
Posted on May 20th, 2010 under We are Pinoys!
http://goodnewspilipinas.com/?p=11511

Top Filipino songwriter Vehnee Saturno and up and coming talent Lourden Panganiban both bagged the top awards at the Shanghai International Song Festival in China.

Lourden won the Grand Prize, besting 17 other countries and 31 contestants. She sang “Within,” Vehnee’s composition, which was named “Best Song.”

The chanteuse and the composer took home $5,000 and $2,000, respectively.

Vehnee revealed that Lourden was not his first choice to sing “Within” as he wanted her to represent the country in next year’s competition. However, as luck would have it, “the first artist who was supposed to interpret the song backed out at the last minute and Lourden filled up the slot.”

The road to triumph was a bumpy one, shared the composer of popular hits such as Willie Revillame’s “Ikaw Na Nga,” Martin Nievera’s “Be My Lady,” and Sarah Geronimo’s “Forever’s Not Enough.”

“With many contestants in the competition they asked each of them to sing three sets of songs in groups of three, and that is when they picked the 15 semi-finalists. From there they picked 10, it was like the Olympics,” Vehnee related.

Lourden hopes this achievement will open doors of opportunity for her to realize her dream of being known as a singer.

What do you mean - "buti na lang suportado"? You mean she doesn't deserve any of these hypes?

 meron kang alam na dapat mas deserving kaysa sa kanya?

ganun?

Ay nagalit ang mga fans

Yeah she has the talent but can she maintain her popularity? This is just me but her features do not speak longevity. Personal opinion ko lang yan kaya wag magalit. :peace:

Wala namang galit sa iyo, it's just a weird comment on how you are trying to put some intrigues on a person's popularity. Now, it's about her features....

Alam mo naman na depende yan sa mga fans o admirers niya. Mahirap yung hindi pa sikat ay laos na kaagad. We will all know sooner or later if this hype will last a long time. But right now, she should enjoy all the blessings that's coming to her.

Na hype lang si Charice dahil kay Oprah. Before that, hinde sya halos kilala at denied pa nga sya sa ABS-CBN. Ngayon naman, todo hype na ang ginagawa nila kay Charice

The proof of one's staying power in the music industry is mostly dependent on the popularity and revenues generated from artist's sophomore album. If it does well, that means that the hype of the first album is validated. If it flops, then they're labeled that much dreaded "One-Hit-Wonder" moniker.

These American celebrities who support Charice have been in the business for years and they won't give their support if they don't see a huge potential in Charice. I believe they know better than most of us.

As Filipinos, we should be supportive as well, hope for the best and not her downfall. Kakasikat pa nga lang, pagbulusok na agad ang nasa isip ng iba.

We need not expect longevity. Only very few artists who made it big in the US were able to sustain their recording career. Most of them are one-hit or one-album wonders. Some were able to do sophomore albums but that's about it. And yet, their legacy as one of the most popular artists of their time remains and their song still lingers. Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Joss Stone, LeAnn Rimes, Shania Twain - they were big once but where are they now?

Just being able to penetrate the American music industry is already a big accomplishment. A lot of artists from the UK, Australia, etc tried to make it in the US but failed. Let's be happy for her and hope that she will make her mark in the US and the world.

Ngayon ABS-CBN, who's laughing? Tinurn down nyo ang isang potential artist nung bata sya.
