Ngayon ABS-CBN, who's laughing? Tinurn down nyo ang isang potential artist nung bata sya. Ngayon sikat na sya sa buong mundo !!
QigBSCY1yAU
^^Kapal ng ABS-CBN na sila daw ang nagpasikat kay Charice. Mukhang hinaharang na ng ABS-CBN ang totoong nagpasikat kay charice sa youtube, si falsevoice. Sobrang kapal talaga ng ABS!
I think thay had text votes for that competition and unfortunately Charice got the lowest text votes. And if all these allegations are true, why then Charice is staying with that station?

I googled him and he's part of the ad campaign (Givenchy) for this season.
amigo32 May 24th, 2010, 03:05 PM These American celebrities who support Charice have been in the business for years and they won't give their support if they don't see a huge potential in Charice. I believe they know better than most of us.
As Filipinos, we should be supportive as well, hope for the best and not her downfall. Kakasikat pa nga lang, pagbulusok na agad ang nasa isip ng iba.
We need not expect longevity. Only very few artists who made it big in the US were able to sustain their recording career. Most of them are one-hit or one-album wonders. Some were able to do sophomore albums but that's about it. And yet, their legacy as one of the most popular artists of their time remains and their song still lingers. Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Joss Stone, LeAnn Rimes, Shania Twain - they were big once but where are they now?
Just being able to penetrate the American music industry is already a big accomplishment. A lot of artists from the UK, Australia, etc tried to make it in the US but failed. Let's be happy for her and hope that she will make her mark in the US and the world.
bull's eye:D
Christian_123 May 24th, 2010, 03:35 PM I think thay had text votes for that competition and unfortunately Charice got the lowest text votes. And if all these allegations are true, why then Charice is staying with that station?
It was more like a popularity contest. Natalo pa nga siya nung second placer (malamang, second placer nga eh) na ilang beses nang pumiyok. I think Gian pangalan nung second placer. Si Sam naman yung pers honor. Madaming nagreklamo sa text votes na yan kaya nung second season sinama na nila yung scores from the judges and ABS management.
basti May 24th, 2010, 04:49 PM Eto lang yan. Saan ba lumabas sa Charice? - ABS CBN. Sino ang tinanggap ni Charice? (Kahit sabihing nagmakaawa) - ABS CBN.
Congrats Charice! You're an amazing singer! You make us proud! :applause:
Ady001 May 25th, 2010, 02:11 AM ^^ I'm quite astonished with her. even if ABS-CBN proclaims they made her into a star, it was that anonymous, YouTube guy that gave her to the world. And she thanks him/her/it so much.
Classic case of crab mentality? hehe
Dustin May 25th, 2010, 02:41 AM ^^ that girl is getting all the hype. buti na lang suportado sya ng filipino community sa states or else. :dunno:
May mga fans sya from Australia, Canada (her song landed on the Canadian chart too), Italy, ASEAN, Japan and Europe etc. Multinational na ang fan base nya meaning Worldwide na.
Kaya bili na tayo ng Album ni Charice!
Dustin May 25th, 2010, 02:56 AM Pero if you analyze it... mas magandang natalo sya sa LBS. Di ba it's always the runners-up who are making it BIG!
Jennifer Hudson, Sam Milby, Tim Rodriguez, David Archuleta, Bangs Garcia, Halley Berry, Adam Lambert........ marami pa.

4 PSHS East Visayas students win in world science tilt
Tacloban City (May 21) -- Four students from the Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas located at Government Center, Palo, Leyte, are the latest batch of Filipinos who have reaped international awards for the Philippines. Seaweeds as source of medicine were the focus of the study of the individual researcher Marc Arthur Limpiado who in one interview said that his project will help popularize his country's seaweeds industry.
"If this happens, our country will have enough sources of raw materials for pharmaceutical products," the 16-years old young scientist who has passed the UPCollege Achievement test and is set to take up a 5-year course in BS Chemical Engineering, said. He finished his elementary education at the Sto. Nino SPED Center in Tacloban City.

This year's Philippine delegation was made up of six students from secondary schools across the country who produced the top entries at the 13th Intel Philippine Science Fair, held at the University of the Philippines Diliman last February. Her songs are still not in the airwaves here. Her album is not even available on the shelves, nor in Australian itunes store.
At the moment, only the Filipino community knows who Charice is especially those who have TFC, and maybe some who stumbled upon her on YouTube or have seen her in delayed telecasts of the Oprah show. But generally, she's still a nobody in Australia. I hope she can penetrate Down Under as well.

You're right. Westlife and Robbie Williams were huge superstars in the UK and Europe but they barely made a dent in the US charts.

Charice Aims for Mainstream Pop Success on "Pyramid" Duet With Iyaz
Monday March 29, 2010
17 year old singer Charice of the Philippines first gained major recognition in the US through multiple appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show. A song "Note to God" was released as a digital download and it climbed to #44 on the Billboard Hot 100. Now a first international full-length album is slated for release in May 2010. The opening single from this collection is "Pyramid" and features a guest vocal from rising Caribbean star Iyaz. The song has already reached the top 15 on the US dance chart. Now "Pyramid" has headed out to mainstream pop radio. Will this be the song that makes Charice a pop star in the US? There is a distinct relationship in sound to recent music from Jordin Sparks. Check out the "Pyramid" video below and let us know your opinion.

I have to say yes to your “Q” and say “Pyramid’ is the song that will & already made Charice a pop star & a household name here & abroad! And not to discount, the strong machinery behind her– is not shabby either… hahaha! Go Charice!

i love Charice’s voice. i thought that she is only good with ballads but now that she started singing RnB songs and even rap.. men! she can sing anything.. she is undeniably the best among singers of today.
March 29, 2010 at 6:32 pm(5) may stewart says:
She is simple THE BEST SINGER in her generation. Name me a singer who can belt side by side Celine Dion, sing pop and rnb and even sing opera with Bocelli. There is only one singer who can do this and her name is CHARICE.
I am betting that 2010 will be her breakout year. This little one is so talented and special and cannot be ignored.

March 29, 2010 at 10:42 pm(7) nikki says:
Charice is a WOWER! A very good entertainer and a total performer! She is the only singer that has given me chicken skin/goosebumps…no one else. I do not know, I can’t explain…there is something in her voice that can make an old man and grown-ups cry. Is it magic? NO! It is real and pure talent. She is gifted with tremendous talent. She got an amazing voice and powerful vocals that she can deliver the song perfectly and effortlessly the fact that she has no formal voice training lesson when she started singing. Though pint sized, she is a complete package, she is a joy to watch and I named her “Miss Standing Ovation”.
March 29, 2010 at 10:48 pm(8) annmarie says:
I think PYRAMID is awesome!! She has already been dubbed the “New Pop Princess” by the NY Post and an “Artist to Watch in 2010″ by FMQB (Friday Morning Quarterback). This is just the begining for the little one with HUGE talent. GO!GO! GO! CHARICE!

I love Pyramid so much.! so cool!
March 30, 2010 at 1:00 am(12) Joy Co says:
Charice is versatile and very talented artist. With her wide vocal range, she sings to caress your soul. I have never been so touched by any other artist the way she does, goosebumps and tears galore! She is beyond amazing. PYRAMID as her career single will appeal to younger people coz of its cool message and nice tune. Older fan like me can still appreciate it coz of her crystal like and magical voice. Charice to the top baby!

March 30, 2010 at 11:09 am(15) Anthony says:
The first time I saw Charice perform was in YouTube when she was 13 singing Whitney’s I Will Always Love You and Celine’s To Love You More. I was blown away! I cannot described how such a small body can belt out and sing grown up songs like the one mentioned! I was hooked!Jordin Sparks is a good singer but Charice can sing anything! Charice’s voice is so powerful and so versatile. The best of its kind. Search for her videos in YouTube and you are going to be hypnotized! No turning back!
March 30, 2010 at 12:04 pm(16) Danny says:
No disrespect to Jordin Sparks, she is a good singer, however her vocal is not as versatile, and sometimes she screams in her song. Charice delivers all of her songs with emotion and connection, and with big stage presence without pretention. Her interpretation of Note to God was mind blowing, and now this new song Pyramid shows her wide range of talent. To the top Charice!
March 30, 2010 at 12:26 pm(17) from China says:
i’ve been following Charice’s career .. and i see it is inevitable Charice will be mainstream .. she always gives me goosebumps every time i watch her performance ..

who would think that this little girl who dream just to sing on stage and become popular in her own country become an international star she is an inspiration to everyone when i was her age i didn’t have the kind of courage perseverance and hardwork she have and she seems to be fearless as soon as she enter the stage she is one of the living proof that big dreams comes true
March 30, 2010 at 7:55 pm(20) Thomas Norm says:
Most artists come and go. This girl, Charice, as Ellen put it, “I can smell a star.” David Foster proclaimed after her powerful rendition of the Bodyguard medley in Las Vegas at his DF & Friends Concert, “A Star is born.” Oprah proclaimed after hearing her sang in her show, “The most talented kid in the world.” She sang with Celine at MSG in NYC and Andrea Bocelli in Tuscany, Italy. She got standing ovations in all her performances. Her producers made a strategic decision to pair her with Iyaz and sing an RnB to mainstream into the 12-30 year old demographic group.
Charice’s ability to cross genres, make dramatic improvement with her communications skills in less than three years, and work the stage well to fit her act tell a lot about her as a performer. Her voice is the “it” that sets her apart from ther rest. She seems to understand how Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Madonna have used product imagery and marketing (through technolgy this time)to create a brand for her. Likewise, she understands how important to continue showcasing her great vocals like Celine, Whitney and Christina in retaining the divaesque stature and legacy.
March 30, 2010 at 10:14 pm(21) donnie says:
great song…this girl is gonna go places….she’s a diva in the making….
March 31, 2010 at 3:34 pm(22) chakyun says:
Jordin Spark is a good singer but Charice is a better singer. Both of them performed in the Skate for the Heart just recently. Majority of people can see the difference between the two, Charice performed without back-up and she makes her mark while Jordin Sparks needs a whole band and back-up singers to make her songs spicy and you can´t even hear her singing. But we cannot deny that “Americal Idol” helps her popularity to rise.
March 31, 2010 at 5:10 pm(23) Johanna says:
Charice has amazing vocals. She’s gives me goosebumps.

April 2, 2010 at 8:26 am(27) ranty reyes says:
the star in her is undeniable. david, oprah, ellen and so manyyyyyyyyyy more confirms. to the top baby. theres no more way but upupupup and away for charice.
April 2, 2010 at 9:44 am(28) Andrew says:
If there is a contest for all the current female singer right now, like singing different kind of songs I would bet that Charice will win. Go Charice
April 2, 2010 at 10:31 am(29) Steve says:
There are so many things going for this girl that it’s undeniable – as David Foster has mentioned so many times. The fact that it took more than a year for WB to prepare the release of her album – all original songs, written and arranged for her – shows how serious her management team is about bringing Charice out properly to the world.
Truly, one of the best vocalist out there, right now.
April 2, 2010 at 11:03 am(30) cardcrusher says:
“Pyramid” won’t be the song that will propel Charice to mainstream America. First, it’s too generic. Secondly, it comes across as a song that Jojo would have done in 2005.
The comparison to Jordin Sparks is not as strong as the comparison to Jojo. Unlike, Jordin and Jojo, Charice just lacks that factor that appeal to younger people. Jojo and Jordin also have catchy songs while Charice’s “Pyramid” is mildly catchy at best.
April 2, 2010 at 12:24 pm(31) from indonesia says:

Pyramid, pyramid…. pyramid… is in my head. The high notes is breathtaking, the voice is so addicting. As Steve says “truly the best vocalist out there”.. Godbless Charice
April 2, 2010 at 9:24 pm(34) muskrat says:
I hate it when people compare then bring down a singer in favor of their personal preferences, but that is show business, they will always going to be compared. Charice is one of a kind and she will only get better through the years, she’s only 17 so she will be up there with the best for years to come and she’s undeniable. A multi talented singer with tremendous vocal range, her high or low notes will simply blow you away. She can sing Whitney, Celine songs with ease then go RNB, RAP, never seen anything like her. Go Charice, all the way to the top baby.
April 2, 2010 at 9:25 pm(35) chris says:
oh please..stop comparing Charice from Jordin and Jojo…doesn’t make sense…
Love yeah Charice….
April 2, 2010 at 10:27 pm(36) pkaycha says:
Charice singing is just superb. She has a very nice personality and an unbelievable talent especially for her age. I am ddicted to “Pyramid”! I wish the success she deserves!

Just beware that some Charice fans have been known to commit sock puppetry when promoting her. I have proof (with screenshots and links) that they leave multiple messages under different names, and worse, it’s condoned by some.

I can see the Christina Aguilera formula on Charice

- loves to belt on the top of their lungs.
- and has a very dramatic life
- they both stated at 6 on venturing the music industry
I just hope that she’ll not gonna get dirty after this album.

Every song on the album is just amazingly well-written and composed. Kudos to David Foster and everyone else who worked on the album! I thought I was the only one who was getting all choked up every time I hear her sing. I can really feel that she means every word when she sings it. I play her CD on a loop and I can’t seem to get tired.

Desierto to train at Int’l Court of Justice in the Hague (http://goodnewspilipinas.com/?p=11546)
UP Diliman College of Law’s Diane Desierto received official appointment to the 2010-2011 traineeship/clerkship at the International Court of Justice at the Hague, Netherlands.
Desierto is currently finishing her Doctorate in Laws at Yale University.
This has been the first appointment given to a Filipino or a Southeast Asian. The only other Asian who was appointed into the program was a Japanese, also from Yale Law School, in 2005. Desierto said that candidacies for the clerkships had only been solicited from law schools in North America, Europe and the Australian Law School of the Australian National University.
A graduate of Economics (summa cum laude) and Law (cum laude) and a UP Debate Society alumna was unanimously selected and appointed by the (ICJ) to one of the most prestigious eight clerkship positions at the Court, awarded only to JD/LLM/JSD students with demonstrated academic excellence, an established record of international publications and scholarly writing, and (preferably) legal practice experience.
In recognition of the appointment, Yale Law School is awarding Desierto a full fellowship to cover living and travel expenses during her clerkship year.

RonnieR May 26th, 2010, 03:31 PM UST Singers win more awards in Poland festival
GMANews.TV - 1 hour 52 minutes ago
Following their major victory in Ireland and a successful concert in Spain, the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Singers did the country proud yet again by winning all major awards in a prestigious choir competition, this time in Poland.
The Philippine Embassy in Warsaw reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the UST Singers clinched all the top awards in the recently concluded 6th International Choir Festival Mundus Cantat.
The festival was held in Sopot, Poland from May 19 to 23. Other participating choirs were from France, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine and host country Poland, according to a release posted on the DFA’s website.
Under the baton of Professor Fidel Calalang Jr., the choir bagged all the Gold Diplomas in the Sacral Music, Secular and Folk Music, and Spiritual, Gospel and Jazz categories
The UST Singers likewise scored a grand slam as one of the most successful Philippine choirs by getting the nod of the festival jury and winning the Grand Prix competition.
Festival Director Joanna Stanskowska awarded the Statuette of Sopot Seagull to Professor Calalang, while Consul General Armando Comia handed him the "Grand Prix Diploma."
“The UST Singers were an instant celebrity in the festival. The Philippine representatives in the choir competition were simply awesome in their performances that even competing choir conductors were already certain of the outcome even before the announcement of the results," the release stated.
Ambassador Alejandro D. Del Rosario sent Consul General Comia and Cultural Attache Quennie Odiamar to Sopot to represent the Embassy and lend support to the choir.
The Mundus Cantat Sopot Music Festival is held every spring in Sopot, gathering choirs from all over the world to strengthen common musical heritage and at the same time recognizing and celebrating cultural diversity.
Before their highly acclaimed performance in Poland, the UST Singers copped two special awards in the 56th Cork International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland on May 1. (See: UST singers get 2 awards in intl festival held in Ireland)
The UST Singers also wowed Spanish and Filipino audiences alike with their well-received concert in Barcelona, Spain, the second time in three years that the group performed in the country.
The UST choir is in Poland as part of its latest European tour, where they are slated to participate in six international choral competitions.
According to the DFA, the UST Singers have won over 45 international prizes in the last 15 years. These include the award of ‘Best Choir in the World’ at the 2001 World Choral Festival in Puebla, Mexico and the Grand Prize at the 149th Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, United Kingdom in 1995. —Jerrie M. KUALA LUMPUR—Lea Salonga was in town last weekend for a two-night concert. And what an enchanting evening it was!
From the minute she sang the first note, the magic began. The capacity audience of 6,000 at the Plenary Hall of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Saturday was told by the Philippine sensation that her opening repertoire comprised songs she had fallen in love with over the years. She hoped that everyone, too, would fall in love with them.
Indeed, they did.
Dressed in black and backed by a five-piece band – with her brother Gerard at the helm (and piano) – Salonga was breathtaking at her first ever concert in Malaysia. An Evening With Lea Salonga was organised by R&B Productions and presented by Malaysia Airlines Enrich in partnership with CIMB Bank.
She kicked off her gig with I’ve Never Been In Love, followed by the uplifting number she sang as Fantine in the famous musical Les Miserables, I Dreamed A Dream.
Interestingly, each song was punctuated with a personal anecdote. The 39-year-old chanteuse brought up intimate morsels of her life as well as of her two-decade-long career that began with the award-winning starring role in the hit musical Miss Saigon in 1989, first in West End, London, then in Broadway, New York.
She went on to dedicate I Do to her “love” – her husband Robert Chien, who was in the audience together with their daughter Nicole, four.
The international theatre star next paid tribute to Michael Jackson, who inspired both her and her younger brother since they were kids. “Gerard asked me to stick sequins onto gloves for him,” she quipped to laughter from the floor. For “the greatest entertainer of all times”, she sang Gone Too Soon by the late King of Pop.
When she performed I’d Give My Life For You from Miss Saigon, the audience was visibly moved as her powerful vocals rang with emotion.
The song held a special meaning for the mother of one because when her daughter was born, “I finally knew the power behind the song.”
Next up were the lighter Someone To Watch Over Me and the funny Taylor The Latte Boy, about a girl falling in love with a Starbucks barista!
In honor of the era of musical revolution that she was brought up in, she belted out a medley of 1980s pop songs and ballads. The familiar and catchy tunes had the audience singing along.
In self-deprecating humor, the youthful-looking lady talked about turning the big 4-0 (next year), and how as she aged, she realized the importance of just having fun. With that, she slipped casually into what sounded like a powerhouse ballad, only to have the audience suddenly realize she was singing Lady Gaga’s Poker Face! By the time the first bridge was over, the audience was cheering her on as she started on the actual dance version.
After that rousing rendition, she performed On My Own, from her role as Eponine in Les Miserables, to thunderous applause.
“As everyone knows, I was a Disney princess,” Salonga, who was the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in the Disney animated feature Aladdin, said as an introduction to her next song.
She ruefully remarked that much as she would like to sing A Whole New World, she was without an Aladdin. At this point, a voice was heard from the back rows: “I’ll be your Aladdin!” Amidst cheering from the crowd, Iz Sulaini, an aspiring singer and huge fan of Salonga, raced down the steps to the stage.
A delighted Salonga then did a duet with Iz to loud appreciation. After the show, the 27-year-old Iz told this reviewer that he “had been preparing for this moment since he was 12!”
Salonga appropriately closed her 90-minute show with Tiga Malam (Three Nights) made famous by Datuk Siti Nurhaliza.
The audience gave her a standing ovation as the star of the night left the stage, but the applause got louder and Salonga returned on stage with a big smile and rendered three more numbers.
She sang last year’s American Idol finale song No Boundaries, Barbra Streisand’s Everybody Says Don’t, and The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow from Annie, her first major musical theatre role in the Philippines.
When she finally gave her last bows and left the stage, you can tell why Salonga has had such a long and successful career. Standing up on that stage with just her band, Salonga was a commanding and powerful presence. Every note she sang was crystal clear; she moved effortlessly between ballads, musical theatre and pop, hitting the high notes with as much ease as she sang the low notes. She played well to the sell-out crowd, telling stories that had everyone laughing.
And her brother Gerard, her musical director, deserves a special mention. He played with passion throughout the concert, directing the band while playing the piano. Brother and sister obviously have a great working relationship as they read each other’s cues on stage perfectly.
Salonga is the real deal. She doesn’t just sing; each song is a performance in itself. You find yourself brought on the stages of Broadway and West End as she sings the signature songs from her theatre career.
You’re welcome back anytime, Lea! The Star-Asia News Network

THE Philippines scored a major success in convincing all 188 other United Nations member-countries to adopt the final text of the treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that strengthens global resolve for nuclear disarmament and end nuclear enrichment programs.
Ambassador Libran Cabactulan, Philippine permanent representative to the UN who led the Philippine presidency in the monthlong NPT Review Conference, said the successful conclusion of the review forum provides a safer condition from nuclear weapons.
“This is a major victory not only for the Philippines but also for the entire world,” said Cabactulan after the 28-page final document was approved by all. It includes 64 items in three NPT pillars—disarmament, nonproliferation, peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
“We have agreed on a final document. Over the past four weeks, the States Parties achieved a better understanding of each other’s positions and a clearer appreciation of the need to strengthen the main pillars of the NPT,” he said. The consensus “was historic” because it prevented a repeat of the failed 2005 Review Conference.
Adopted was a Philippine proposal to convene a conference in 2012 on the establishment of “a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction,” to be hosted by the UN General Assembly and to be attended by all Middle East countries.
Cabactulan said the document also called on China, France, Russia, Britain, and the United States to commit to accelerate concrete progress on the steps leading to nuclear disarmament, take steps to further diminish the role and significance of nuclear weapons, and to report back on progress by 2014, a year before the next NPT Review Conference.
The treaty, which took effect in 1970, mandates the Non Nuclear Weapons States not to acquire such weapons while at the same time requires Nuclear Weapons States to make commitments to move towards the total elimination of these weapons but encourages the development of nuclear energy for peaceful uses.
Cabactulan said the “common desire to push nuclear disarmament forward fueled many of the understandings and helped to resolve any remaining differences of opinion on a small number of issues and differences on certain details.”

The Philippine Montessori Center Instrumental Ensemble (PMCIE) and the Temple Hill International School Marimba Ensemble (Thisme), both from Manila, received critical acclaim for their performance on May 10 with NYC’s Children’s Orchestra Society (COS) at the Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York.
The mini musicians, composed of preschool pupils 4-6 years old, were hailed by the New York Times for adding “rhythmic interest and texture” to the overture inspired by a local ritual dance.
The event was called “16th Discovery Gala Concert of The Children’s Orchestra Society.” PMCIE and Thisme were invited to enrich the COS Young Symphonic Orchestra’s opening number, “Sinulog Overture.”
The kids used a variety of instruments, mostly percussion, to create musical measure and the lauded texture. These included the angklung (Indonesian bamboo instruments) and the native kulintang, which were played together with PMCIE’s standard musical ware—the marimba, xylophone, timpani, and drums.
COS’ Filipino conductor, Michael Dadap, who also composed “Sinulog Overture,” was instrumental in inviting the first PMCIE batch (2007) to play with the COS two years ago in a back-to-back concert at the Queens Theatre, also in New York City.

Chihiro Ikeda and the Philippine ladies golf team swept to victory in the 21st Singapore Ladies Amateur Championship at the Singapore Island Golf Club.
Ikeda battled back from three strokes down in the last eight holes to beat local bet Charlotte Thomas, closing out with a one-under 71 to post a two-shot victory in the 54-hole tournament which drew some of the region’s leading players.
Ikeda, the reigning SEA Games individual gold medalist totaled two-under 214 that included rounds of 71 and 72 as she turned back Thomas, who led in the first two rounds but limped home with a second straight 74 for a 216.
The 18-year-old Ikeda also led the Filipina squad, which included Lovelynn Guioguio and Anya Tanpinco, to the 36-hole team championship, finishing with a 288 aggregate from rounds of 142-146 and beating Macau, which had 147-145 for a 292.
Daniella Uy capped the squad’s domination of the event by bagging the Class A crown with a solid final round score of 71 for a 228, besting teammate Sheryl Villasencio (78-236) and Singapore’s Lyn Sen (86-252).

New ork, NY (Top40 Charts/ DaSBro Enterprise) - 11-year old Philippine-American singing sensation NINA WAGA MOJARES won the "New York Liberty KIDZ BOP Sports Jamz Talent Search" on May 23, 2010 during halftime at the WNBA women's basketball game at New York City's iconic Madison Square Garden. The "New York Liberty KIDZ BOP Sports Jamz Talent Search," now in its ninth year, is a showcase for undiscovered talent (ages 5-14) in the New York area. This unbelievable opportunity allows singers or musicians to perform in front of thousands of fans and live their performance dream. New York Liberty fans select their finalists from each month.
The finalists have competed head-to-head during halftime at the May 23rd game verses the Atlanta Dreams at Madison Square Garden.
Liberty fans choose their winner, NINA WAGA MOJARES, who will receive a number of prizes including a feature on the KIDZ BOP website and an educational IRA. NINA competed against Nia Imani, a 12 year old Broadway actress and singer who appeared in the theatrical production of "Lion King" in New York City last year. NINA sang the crowd favorite, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," the version song made popular by Jennifer Hudson in her Academy Award winning performance in the motion picture, "Dreamgirls".
NINA WAGA MOJARES from Freehold, NJ started singing at the early age of 3 when her Mom, Jeanette, introduced her to karaoke. The young, multi-talented, NINA has been delighting audiences, receiving well deserved standing ovations, and encore requests wherever and whenever she performs. NINA has a soft; clean, but yet, powerful voice with a touch of R&B/Pop to it. She has been described as a "mini Alicia Keys". NINA's idols are Charice Pempengco, Taylor Swift. Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Sarah Geronimo, Jennifer Hudson, and others. She looks up to them and her dream is to be just like them and sing with them, too. NINA loves to perform in front of large crowds and enjoys every second of it!
Proud of her Philippine heritage, NINA is active in the Philippine-American community in the New York tri-state area. She has performed at many cultural and fundraising events. Her contributions have not gone unnoticed. Several weeks ago, NINA was honored with the 2010 Dr. Jose P. Rizal Circle of Excellence Award for 'Outstanding Youth' in the Philippine-American community. Next up, she is scheduled to perform a duet with 12 year old Seven Odon at the Philippine Independence Day Parade and cultural celebration in Manhattan on June 6th.
2010 has been a busy year for the talented NINA. Several months ago, she sang during halftime during a New York Knicks basketball game at Madison Square Garden. She also auditioned for the NBC hit tv show, "America's Got Talent," with her backup dance crew "Legit". Immediately after their performance, celebrity judge Howie Mandrell proclaimed that NINA was "great!", an sentiment echoed by fellow judges Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne. Furthermore, NINA was featured and performed on a episode of the nationally televised "Maury" (Povich) program as part of "Maury's Most Talented Kids 2010" annual episode. Also, NINA was a special guest vocalist at a concert by multiple Grammy Award nominee and Tony Award winning singer, Melba Moore, on Staten Island, NY.
In addition to her vocal gifts, NINA, is an award-winning ballroom dancer. NINA and her dance partner, Gabriel Basalatan, (under the direction of Spencer Nyemchek) have become skilled in the rumba, samba, jive, and cha-cha, winning many competitions throughtout the US.
Watch NINA's vocal and dance performances at www.ninawagamojares.com.
NINA WAGA MOJARES, remember that name.... she is without doubt a major talent who is on the path to stardom.

NEW YORK - MANNY Pacquiao, boxing's pound-for-pound king and a newly elected legislator in the Philippines, accepted his third Fighter of the Year award Friday from the Boxing Writers Association of America.
'Tonight I overflow with joy and gratitude,' Pacquiao said. 'I am thankful that, just like Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and other boxers, I decided to get into boxing.'
After a 2009 that included a spectacular second-round knockout of Ricky Hatton and a punishing 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto that gave Pacquiao titles in a record seven divisions, Pacquiao was the overwhelming winner in voting by the organisation's members. He was also named Fighter of the Decade.
'I confronted poverty by trusting God and dreaming big,' Pacquiao said. 'I was convinced I could succeed in boxing. The boxing ring could be the breeding ground for my dreams.' Pacquiao, who was accompanied by his wife, Jinkee, planned to stay in New York to see Cotto challenge junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman on Saturday night in the first fight at the new Yankee Stadium - more than 30 years after the last fight at the original Yankee Stadium.
After that he will travel to Washington to meet with US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, promoter Bob Arum said. He'll take on his own new duties as a legisator when the Philippine Congress convenes in July.
Mr Arum said that he would continue to try to put together a fight between Pacquiao and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather jnr. Negotiations on a bout last year broke down over Mayweather's demand for stringent blood-test doping controls.

Yes, the Philippines has a national rugby team, and they are on a three-year winning streak. Photo courtesy of the Philippine Rugby Football Union
MANILA, Philippines
- Something great happened this weekend, an event that would make Filipinos very proud... if they only knew about it. The Philippines, the newest addition and lowest-ranked team in Division 2 of the Asian 5 Nations (A5N) Rugby, destroyed powerhouse Thailand in the semis and home favorite India in the final to win the Division 2 Championship.
Our team, nicknamed the Philippine Volcanoes, is unbeaten in three years in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU), having seized the Division 4 Championship in 2008, the Division 3 Championship in 2009, and now Division 2. With this win, they charge into Division 1 of the A5N in 2011, making this the longest promotion streak in ARFU history.
Amazing, given that until last year the Philippines wasn’t even a full member of the International Rugby Board. More amazing when you consider that few people (most of them expats) follow or care about the sport locally.
The Philippine Volcanoes dominated their larger opponents in the final, restricting the Indian team to scoring at the beginning and at the end of the match. “It was a physical game with India,” says team captain Michael Letts. “The boys stepped up to the plate and did what they were told. Our forwards laid the platform for the team.”
“Coach Expo Mejia taught us discipline,” adds Oliver Saunders, who with his brothers Ben and Matt had scored a combined 38 points in the Filipinos’ 55-33 victory over Thailand in the semifinals. “The team stuck to the game plan and structure. And we never gave up.”
“The team showed aggressiveness,” coach Mejia notes. “A lot of our players play overseas, and their experience showed. There was unity among the team. Tactically they got it right and did everything that was asked of them. Another factor is that they are very fit.”
Phil Abraham was named Man of the Match in the semifinal against Thailand, and Chris Hitch in the final against India. All 24 players on the roster were able to play.
I learned of the existence of the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) when I was contacted by their secretary-general Alvin San Diego. When Jessica Zafra interviewed me for The Philippine STAR I had mentioned my passion for rugby, which I played in school in England from the age of 9 to my late teens. I was impressed by what the PRFU had achieved with the most modest of resources, and their determination to put together an effective Philippine rugby program and team.
It turns out that there is plenty of Filipino talent playing rugby abroad - both Filipinos of mixed ethnicity and those whose parents had migrated. The PRFU has a formal process for identifying and recruiting Filipino talent throughout the world, among them Expo Mejia, a first-class Filipino coach who had worked with the Waratahs in Australia. The Waratahs are a household word in Australia; many of their players have played for the Australian national team.
It was clear that the PRFU board, which includes committed expats like team manager Matt Cullen, were serious in their efforts. Globe CEO Ernest Cu and I committed to watch the national team and help them with sponsorships. As an enabler of communication across national borders, the support of a telecom company like Globe had resonance and relevance.
The newly formed Philippine Volcanoes played an exhibition match last week against the Parañaque-based team Nomads. They had not yet played together as a team, but they were physically imposing, well-trained athletes who obviously played at the competitive level. It was fascinating to see Filipinos from different countries come together to play at home. I have always believed in the Global Filipino, and this is an extraordinary example of the Pinoy talent that resides all over the world.
According to coach Mejia, there are many other nationally ranked Filipino heritage players he could not get hold of for personal and professional reasons, from a massive prop forward in the national league in Italy to players in Japan.
I was also impressed by the commitment of the players. I asked one of the players, Justin Coveney, what he did and he said he was a lawyer in Sydney. When I asked him how he got time off to come and play in the Philippines with no pay or professional commitments he said, “When my firm heard that I was coming here to play rugby and represent my country of origin, they let me go without a moment’s hesitation, with full pay. Representing your country in a rugby match is the highest honor anyone can achieve.”
This weekend I was glued to two different rugby tournaments on two continents at the same time. I was physically present for the inaugural US Collegiate Sevens in Columbus, Ohio, where my son Jaime Alfonso was playing on the Harvard team. Meanwhile, I followed the Asian Division 2 championship half a world away, in New Delhi, India, through text updates from my sister Bea. She was in Delhi to cheer on her son Jaime Urquijo Zobel, captain of the Notre Dame University rugby team until he graduated this year, and now a member of the Philippine men’s 15’s rugby national team.
Family ties are the real glue of Philippine society. Some will question just how Filipino the national rugby team is, with players named Saunders, Morris, Letts, Zappia on board. This is a Filipino heritage team in accordance with International Rugby Board standards, composed of players with a Filipino parent or grandparents. Any doubts as to whether they are Pinoy are erased when one sees the team’s entourage: Filipino mothers and fathers, traveling at their own expense to support a Philippine team few of us know about. There are four sets of brothers on the RP team (the names listed earlier), surely a record in any sport.
I relayed the ongoing match scores by text to Jessica in Manila, who posted them on her blog while waiting for the A5N Twitter feeds. Incredible what technology now allows us to do. It was particularly engaging because a small group of spectators around me in the stands in Columbus wanted to be kept informed about the results of the Philippine Rugby team on the other side of the world. Every time our Philippine team scored in Delhi, a small group of spectators would cheer in Columbus, Ohio for no reason that was obvious to the rest of the crowd. It happened quite a bit as the Philippine team scored regularly - it was quite surreal.
Rugby is a highly physical and demanding sport that has moved from its “amateur” roots to a global sport at both the 15s and Sevens level. You now regularly see small Pacific countries like Samoa and Fiji play alongside traditional powerhouses like England and New Zealand, and win! Not only is it exciting to watch, but this is a game that is bringing together the diverse Filipino talent across the globe. To watch a team come together from all over the world, and to see the players so excited and proud to represent their mother country, has been moving and fulfilling. I look forward to seeing them hoist a medal at the Asian Games. - With Jessica Zafra
diz June 8th, 2010, 06:04 AM Congrats to the Volcanoes then! There seems to be no stopping them!

Juvic Pagunsan
Juvic Pagunsan won the Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand with a runaway seven-stroke victory.
Starting the day with a four-stoke lead, he closed with a five-under-par 65 at Laguna Phuket Golf Club for his first win on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.
Thailand’s Udorn Duangdecha claimed outright second after shooting a 68 while Lam Chih Bing from Singapore was one stroke further back in third position after carding a 67.
Pagunsan bogeyed his first hole but then carded six birdies including four in the last six. He finished with a four round aggregate of 19-under-par 261.
“This is really special. It is only my second win as a professional overseas. My wife and young daughter are also here so it’s very emotional,” said Pagunsan, 32.
He won once on the Philippine Golf Tour in 2010 and twice last year but his last big win came in the 2007 Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational.
“I have been working hard on my swing with my coach Junced. It was too upright and so we had to flatten my backswing. It’s now working and my confidence is sky high,” added Pagunsan, who won 9,750 dollars.

pulsephaze22 June 10th, 2010, 04:08 PM New records set for Filipino art at Christie’s auction
Posted on June 9th, 2010 under Art & Living Achievements
Fernando Cueto Amorsolo (The Philippines 1892-1972), “Lavenderas”, sold for US$ 433,992 establishing a new record for the artist at auction. (Christie’s Images Ltd 2010) Philippine art scaled new heights at the recently concluded Christie’s auction of Southeast Asian Modern and Contemporary Art in Hong Kong.
Artworks of contemporary painter Geraldine Javier and National Artist Fernando Amorsolo fetched for new record prices by a Filipino in an international auction.
Keong Ruoh-Ling, head of Christie’s Southeast Asian Art Department, said in a post-sale release that “the spring sale demonstrates clear strength and depth in the Southeast Asian contemporary art market.”
Before the bidding, however, while confident that the Philippine pieces would sell, she was quite conservative about the prices they would realize, given the political and economic situation of the country. She was more upbeat about the Indonesians.
Her preferential optimism was not misplaced. Of the items sold, eight Indonesian and two Philippine works realized top prices.
Javier’s work entitled “Ella Amo’ Apasionadamente y Fue Correspondida (For She Loved Fiercely, and She Is Well-Loved)” is a 90 x 63-in portrait of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) painted in oil on canvas, with insets of framed embroidery and preserved butterflies. realized a new auction record for the artist, fetching nearly 10 times more than the original low estimate.
Javier, born in 1970, originally studied to be a nurse but shifted to art. At the age of 40, she has come into full flower, as her latest painting-arguably her best so far-proves. An unnamed and so far unidentified “Asian institution” is said to have purchased the piece.
Amorsolo’s “Lavanderas (Washerwomen)” (23 x 32 ½ in) dated 1923 fetched the second highest price in the sale. To bring it home, a private collector paid US$433,992 (about P20.2M), around 11 times its original low estimate (all auction sales figures include premium). It surpassed the artist’s previous record of less than P20M a few years ago for the vastly superior “Portrait of Fernanda de Jesus” dated 1915 (32 x 21 in).
Ella Amo’ Apasionadamente y Fue Correspondida (For She Loved Fiercely, And She is Well Loved (Geraldine Javier) The hammered price of another Amorsolo also raised eyebrows. “Rice Planting” scene (24 ¼ x 34 in) dated 1951, fetched US$142,366 (approximately P6.6M), about four times its original low estimate.
Another Amorsolo scene painting usually referred to in Manila as “Under the Mango Tree” (dated 1949, 24 x 34 ¼ in), fetched a more logical US$67,818 (approximately P3.15M), perfectly within the prevailing parameters and indeed on the low side.
Javier, Ronald Ventura and Jose Santos III are among the New Painters, a group of artists mostly born in the 1970s, who came into their maturity at the turn of this century.
Despite the high prices realized by Javier’s works in recent auctions, Ventura retains the record among the New Painters for highest hammered bid so far, for a huge work sold a couple of years ago. In this Spring 2010 auction, a buyer walked away with Ventura’s “Overtones” (84 x 60 in) for a more sedate price.
“The Closet” (72 x 60 in) a work by Jose Santos III, which fetched for double its estimated amount. The work is a portrait of a self that remains diffident, largely imaginary, living an ad hoc life.
All works by other Filipino artists were sold, including those by Lao Lian Ben, Wire Tuazon, Kiko Escora, Rodel Tapaya and Yasmin Sison.

pulsephaze22 June 12th, 2010, 02:32 PM Filipino astronomer catches 3rd collision in Jupiter skies in video
MANILA, June 5 (PNA) -- A Filipino astronomer documented the latest collision in the turbulent Jupiter atmosphere in a video, causing quite a stir in the international science community.
"I still can't believe that I caught a live impact on Jupiter," says Cebuano astronomy enthusiast Christopher Go, who posted the video in spaceweather.com.
The strike occurred at 20:31 UT on June 3rd, about 4:31 a.m. Friday here, and produced a bright flash of light in the giant planet's cloudtops.
Jupiter has the largest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System, spanning over 5000 km in altitude.
Jupiter is perpetually covered with clouds composed of ammonia crystals and possibly ammonium hydrosulfide. The clouds are located in the tropopause and are arranged into bands of different latitudes, known as tropical regions.
These are sub-divided into lighter-hued zones and darker belts. The interactions of these conflicting circulation patterns cause storms and turbulence.
Go expressed the same thing gave Jupiter a black eye July last year which caused the cosmic impact to leave a mark on the giant planet today.
The nature of the impactor is presently unknown. It might have been an asteroid or a comet. In either case, a dark and cindery debris field is expected to develop around the impact point; that's what has happened in the aftermath of previous Jupiter impacts. Professional and amateur astronomers are encouraged to monitor Jupiter in the hours ahead, and stay tuned for updates, the spaceweather said in its website.
Meanwhile another amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley of Australia who likewise had been closely following Jupiter said there were no visible remains at the impact point a few hours after the event.
Go, a furniture company owner in Cebu City, discovered the transformation of a high-pressure storm on Jupiter, the solar system’s largest planet on February 24, 2006.
He observed that a white egg-shaped storm system in Jupiter called “Oval BA” changed its color to red, thus it was called “Red Spot Junior.”
He used an 11-inch telescope and a CCD camera to capture the image. Later, he informed the Jupiter Section of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers of his discovery.(PNA)

MANILA, Philippines – Another Filipino has impressed foreign audiences with her singing prowess.
Restaurant employee Chenee Capunan bagged the grand prize of Voice of McDonald’s in April, besting other finalists from Peru and South Korea.
Voice of McDonald’s is a global singing contest for McDonald’s employees, restaurant managers and crew.
Over 10,000 people from the fast food chain’s 32,000 branches around the world auditioned for the competition, which is already on its third year.
Winning the top prize gave the 21-year-old Davaoeña an opportunity to jumpstart her music career by recording demo material in an all-expense paid trip to Hollywood.
A previous Voice of McDonald’s winner has already released her first album.
Grammy Award-winning music producer Walter Afanasieff, a Voice of McDonald’s judge, commented on Capunan: “People stood right up after she sang and thinking about it, I still get chills. So definitely, she's got a future. And I'd like to help.
Capuyan, for her part, said: “I'm so speechless. A lot of people are watching you performing live on stage. It was really amazing… I'd like to thank the McDonald's family for this wonderful opportunity. Thank you so much!”
The Filipino also won $20,000, a MacBook laptop, a music player and other bonus prizes.
“Sa mga may talento sa pagkanta, huwag kayong magsawa na ipakita ang talento ninyo… ipakita niyo po ang kaya ninyong gawin,” Capunan encouraged other aspiring singers.

LOS ANGELES – No less than Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich star in “Jonah Hex,” a movie adaptation of a comic-book series co-created by legendary Filipino artist Tony DeZuniga and writer John Albano.
As we write this column, Tony and his wife Tina have just come home from the “Jonah Hex” premiere in Hollywood.
“It was a great experience,” Tony told us via e-mail. “My wife Tina and I really enjoyed it. The people were cheering inside the movie house and I was surprised that they put my name in the credits. My name was very visible. People will not miss it – it was separate from everybody else’s, except for the names of the writers. Warner Bros. Pictures did an interview with me as side comments about the character and the movie for the DVD release. This was an experience of a lifetime.”
The film adaptation is one of the many career highlights of Tony, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas.
Since the late 1960s, when he started working for DC Comics, Tony has earned a reputation as one of the masters of comic-book illustration. He drew an impressive array of comic-book characters from Conan the Barbarian to Batman. The US Postal Service honored him by using his Spider-woman art for a stamp that is part of the Marvel Super Heroes stamp collection. He designed video games for Sega. Also an award-winning painter, Tony donates his work for worthy causes, including raising funds for the Typhoon “Ondoy” victims.
Below are excerpts from our e-mail interview with Tony, who lives in the Los Angeles area.
What was your reaction when you learned that Josh Brolin and Megan Fox would play Jonah Hex and Lilah, respectively?
I know that Megan Fox played a big role in this movie because they had to shoot more scenes with her. People were so excited for her in this role. Josh Brolin did a good job in “No Country for Old Men.” He is a good actor. I was excited about the casting of John Malkovich. I enjoy watching him in his movies. The trailer looks good and shows what people want – action, sexy scenes and lots of boom and bang.
Were you consulted during pre-production?
They asked me and the writers of the comic-book series, Justin Grey and Jimmy Palmiotti, to come to the set so we can give them pointers. Unfortunately, I was hospitalized for pneumonia from April to June last year. I was in a coma. It took me until August to start working again. I had to rush and finish the graphic novel, “Jonah Hex: No Way Back,” which was released to coincide with the movie’s opening. When I was ready to travel in October last year, we called the production. They said they were done shooting and they were already editing the movie.
What do you remember most when you drew Jonah Hex for the first time in 1977?
I’ve loved the western ever since I was a kid. I even did a cowboy story in the early 1960s in the Philippines. The title was “Medallion.” I wrote the story and did the drawing. LVN Pictures was going to buy it to make it into a movie. But another producer got the rights to the story and never made a movie from it.
When John Albano told me the plot of “Jonah Hex,” I went to Arizona to learn the cowboy ways – how to ride a horse, how to put the saddle, what kind of saddle, boots and other things cowboys use. It was so much fun for someone who loves the western. When DC Comics published the books, everybody was so excited because it was something different. Jonah Hex started in the “Weird Western Tales” book but since the character became popular, he got his own book.
What makes Filipino artists good comic-book illustrators?
Filipinos are very meticulous and are natural, good artists.
Why do you think the character has lasted this long?
Actually, Jonah Hex’s popularity died down in the 1980s when they made the story futuristic. In 2004, they issued reprints of the old “Jonah Hex” books and they were selling like crazy. So they decided to bring back the “Jonah Hex” book with new writers and artists.
Aside from Jonah Hex, who among the characters that you’ve drawn are important to you as an artist?
Conan the Barbarian is one of my best works. Working with John Buscema made it a lot better. I also did four covers for the “Star Wars” comic book. The “Tales of Gothic Romance” and “The House of Mystery” were my early works at DC Comics. “X-Men,” although I only did one issue. My favorite character is Thor. I only did a few issues. I also worked on Batman, Superman, Amazing Spider-Man, Supergirl, The Punisher and The Incredible Hulk.
Another important character which I did was Spider-Woman. The Black Orchid was also another character that I designed for DC Comics that became popular.
Can you please share 10 highlights of your career?
1) When Imelda Marcos gave me an award for bringing the publisher of DC Comics to the Philippines so they can hire more Filipino artists to work on their books;
2) Receiving the Sega President’s Award. I was the main conceptual designer for Sega Japan;
3) Receiving the US Postal Service acknowledgment plaque when Spider-Woman was chosen for the stamp;
4) Working as art director for Fernando Poe Jr.;
5) Working as creative director for Yabut and Associates;
6) Being named 2003 Artist of the Year in Sacramento;
7) Winning Best of Show at the 2002 Delicato Winery Art Show with “sabungero” as my subject;
8) Earning six major awards at the 2002 Mondavi Winery Art Show;
9) Being named by the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco as one of the outstanding artists in 1994;
10) “Jonah Hex” made into a movie.
How often do you go home to the Philippines? What do you enjoy doing when you are there?
We go home as often as we can. We went home in 2007 to do my first art show. We also went home last February to help raise funds, along with other Filipino artists, for the Ondoy storm victims. All the artists donated drawings which were compiled in a book called “Renaissance: Ang Muling Pagsilang.” The original art is being sold and the proceeds will go to the Ondoy victims.
I love to meet artists, young and old. I always enjoy seeing my old friends Ephraim Samson, Rico Rival, Jun Lofamia, Ernie Patricio, Malang, Olazo and our gallery owner friend, Sari Ortega. When I meet the great young artists, I feel young just being with them.
My friend, Noy Del Mundo, owns a property in Anilao, Batangas, that’s just breathtaking. I love that place so much that when I was sick, my wife reminded me of Anilao. I felt that I had to get well so I can go visit Anilao again.
What advice can you give aspiring comic-book artists?
It’s not only about coming up with a pretty picture, but also about how to tell a good story. Practice makes perfect. You should know anatomy.

bulakenyo June 21st, 2010, 11:47 PM It's Official. Charice is now part of Glee.
Glee Girls, Lock Up Your Men! Pop Star Charice Is Coming
Today 11:40 AM PDT by Kristin Dos Santos
Sources confirm pop star Charice is coming to Glee this fall in a recurring role.
So who will she be playing? What's the Shannon Elizabeth connection? And what's the latest on those Justin Timberlake rumors?
I'm told Charice will play a foreign exchange student (just reported by EW) with an ah-mazing singing voice--who will catch the eye of at least one Glee boy (shades of S.E. in American Pie), and the stank eye of one Ms. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele).
Meanwhile, we're told there is "nothing to report" regarding rumors that that other singing sensation you may have heard of, Justin Timberlake, will be coming on the show--at least not yet. Multiple cast members--including Lea, Jenna Ushkowitz and even his doppelganger Matthew Morrison--have told me they'd love to have his sexy back on for a M.M./J.T. dance-off, so keep those fingers crossed.
Now, start your betting. Which guy will catch Charice's eye? And what are we gonna do about it?

Just some musings.....
What would Charice Pempengco be without Star King, YouTube, Ellen Degeneres, and Oprah Winfrey? What would Arnel Pineda be without YouTube and Journey? Would they have been just as famous relying on just their sheer talent and without the backing of such prominent people and entities?

Skill doesn't only count these days. It's all about marketing.
That's why, if more powerful and richer countries tend to bombard us with their culture, they do it better because they had all the bread to pull their shits off. I guess I have to be proud with Charice as well, having only to rely on several networks to get her worth all over the world. And I don't even think she spent something on all that publicity. Less input getting far better output is glowing.
KPop? How would KPop be if not for sheer marketing. If they're not spent on very well, they're just nothing.
Ady001 June 22nd, 2010, 03:27 AM Are Pinoys capable of original thought? Or, are we a nation of "world class" mimics?
We are capable of having original thought. We are just afraid to fail, and that is what is most scaring. It's like the "Bobo Song" by Gloc 9. If you afraid trying on something because you'll fail, you won't go anywhere.

Despite her denials earlier this month Filipino singing sensation Charice has officially booked an arc on season two of "glee" as a foreign exchange student whose killer pipes make Rachel Berry see red. People everywhere are freaking out over the news -- and yet I'm sitting here wondering, "who the eff is Charice?"
The gist is that she was born in the Philippines and rose to fame on YouTube. Since then she's appeared on nearly every talk show, including Oprah's, where the living legend dubbed the 18-year-old the "most talented girl in the world."
So apparently, I'm oblivious ... which I hate. So off to YouTube I went, walking away with a slackjaw and two videos you must see!
Sounds like Rachel has reason to be scared!
crappypants June 22nd, 2010, 04:45 AM speak of the devil Charice is on Yahoo front page.
Charice is the most talented singer in the world and i'm not saying that coz i'm biased.
at least their ratings will go up considering all the Filipinos who'll watch the show. It's a good move for the producers. I don't see why these producers don't start putting more ethnics on the shows to capture the increasing ethnic market. Guess the mainstream viewers aren't so ready for it, regardless of the potential income it can generate.
crappypants June 22nd, 2010, 04:49 AM wala na ba tayong maging pwedeng gawing achievements kundi yung pakanta-kanta?
yeah i think there's enough singing contest winners to be proud of.
It will not make you a living but will only give you temporary minute of fame, what happens afterwards? It should be a hobby only and not pursued , if by chance you get discovered then it's only icing on the cake. It's one in a million to break through though specially the world is still a white man's world.
Dustin June 22nd, 2010, 05:58 AM wala na ba tayong maging pwedeng gawing achievements kundi yung pakanta-kanta?

I'm not even talking about this thread. This thread is fine, I'm talking about online articles where they mention a Filipino and all the Filipinos jump in and hijack the thread like obnoxious children. There are other nationalities reading those comments, it is online, and the reaction of other nationalities is that they get turned off by the filipino obnoxious fans. Now that to me is just a little bit too cocky. Claiming to be of the master race one would have to be a god or titan of Greek mythology, and not mere mortals with just a talent for singing.
Personally speaking, pride is better felt and demonstrated rather than uttered. :colgate:

GENEVA, Switzerland – Three Filipinos have made the country proud by graduating with flying colors from a university in Geneva.
Frances Raquel Narvaez, Robert William Narvaez, and Obed Pantoja were among this year’s 4 summa cum laude awardees of the Webster University.
Ms. Narvaez, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology, minor in Media Communications, had a final grade point average of 3.99/4.0.
Mr. Narvaez, a BA International Relations with emphasis on Refugee Studies and minor in French and Computer Science got a GPA of 3.9/4.0.
Pantoja, a Bachelor of Science in Finance, had a grade of 3.9/4.0.
The 3 also received honors from their respective departments and have been accepted in the graduate programs of reputable institutions abroad.
Ms. Narvaez will reportedly pursue higher studies at Cambridge University, while Mr. Narvaez is going to the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. Pantoja was accepted at the University in Lugano.
The news about the trio’s academic achievement abroad was relayed to abs-cbnNEWS.com by Dr. Desiree Montecillo-Narvaez, a doctor for the United Nations based in Geneva.
“Truly, this represents an enormous source of pride and honor for me not just as a mother, but as a Filipino as well. These awards are a testimony to the international community of the great academic achievement that Filipinos all over the world are able to attain, and of the intellectual capacity that we have,” said Dr. Narvaez in an email letter.
hibell June 22nd, 2010, 10:52 AM am i one of the few who don't give a rat about charice. maybe its because i don't like her type of singing. im more of a rock music type of person. but it's great that she's in glee. i'm happy she's on for the fact of more ethnic diversity.
hell, i was secretly embarrassed to be a filipino & from hawaii for a while during jasmine trias american idol 3 season when she kept on advancing when she didn't deserve to.
im with kintoy, i'd prefer to be proud of a more worthy achievement though.
Ady001 June 22nd, 2010, 11:26 AM @narthuril: That statement of mine wasn't directed solely at Filipinos, it's to everyone and anyone that claims to be a member of a so-called "master race." People who think that way have delusions of grandeur.
It's ironic that we love to proclaim in other online sites and in the media how proud we can be in these things but yet we have the IMSCF syndrome.
Bago ka magputok ng butse mo gawin mo muna dapat gawin mo.
Ady001 June 22nd, 2010, 11:30 AM The point here nga is there are some achievements in world domination that really deserves a merit for the books. In the arts though, I'd really prefer that I see an underdog and someone who's really underfunded perform well and will sweep a lot of people.
In today's world, one can always have the goods, but how one sells these goods takes a matter of time and money.

pulsephaze22 June 22nd, 2010, 01:00 PM I think kaya sa tingin nyo na sa singing lang nag eexcel ang mga pinoy is because singing is part of the entertainment industry,. And everyone is suckers for entertainment-which the media tend to focus a lot. In media, especially in prints, Showbiz occupies the most of the pages.
Kasi our country has a very wide and diverse talent pool. Bakit, lahat ba ng OFWs sa ibang bansa eh mga singers lang? :)

Pinoy writer scores high in World Bank Video competition
Posted on June 20th, 2010 under We are Pinoys!
Christopher Dan Cruz [Philstar] Christopher Dan Cruz captured 2nd place in the recently concluded World Bank Annual International Essay Competition Video category.
The theme was “Youth Unemployment,” and it was an invitation for young people to share their ideas on how they would tackle youth unemployment through youth-led solutions. Some guide questions include: “How does youth unemployment affect you, your country, town or local community?” and “What can you do, working together with your peers, to find a sustainable solution for job seekers through youth entrepreneurship?”
Chris is a creative writer for a company that produces live events. He writes, edits, directs and produces videos and audio-visual presentations.
It took him all of three days and practically no financial investment to complete his one minute and 44-second video – one day to write the script, and two days to compose and edit, with the help of royalty-free music and stock photos from the Internet.
Among 2,009 entries (90 percent of which came from developing countries), his entry, entitled “I Am Not Unemployed,” had won second place in the video category. The prize: $1,000.
Chris describes the style of his video as “kinetic typography” which uses words as visual graphics to explain abstract ideas. Using a special software, his message rejecting the idea of being helpless marches in words onto a backdrop of denim fabric, powerfully projecting an indomitable spirit and a positive mindset.
The idea for the video came to Chris quite naturally, as he felt very strongly about the theme of the competition. He says that since he graduated cum laude from the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communications in 2008, he has been unemployed for only two weeks. That is because he had refused to accept the state of joblessness.
“Unemployment is a state of mind,” he says. “I always go out of my way to do something to make a living.”
When he was 14, he had to drop out of high school for a year due to monetary difficulties. But not one to waste his time, Chris did odd jobs, such as working as a cashier in a barber shop, packing checks, wiping windows and mopping floors.
“Initiative knows no bounds,” he says. “Never be too proud to earn a living. It is better to lose a little dignity in the workplace than lose a lot of dignity doing nothing.”
The World Bank International Essay Competition 2010 is organized by the World Bank in partnership with several outstanding academic and civil society institutions, including Cairo University, Jadavpur University, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Africa Leadership Forum, AIESEC International, European Students’ Forum (AEGEE), Junior Achievement Worldwide, and Conciencia Association.

Wow, thank you very much for sharing this. I am also from Geneva where a big percentage of Filipinos are on the blue collar sector. It's nice to know that we have young Filipinos here representing the country's intellectual cohort.
I am proud of Charice, she has reached that far in terms of the entertainment business. But I think it's about time that we get recognized for something more profound di ba.

Problema sa Indie music and films, very limited ang distribution nila. Hindi sila basta basta available sa market. I have been trying to find cds of Pinikpikan (disbanded na yata sila ngayon) and the '90s rocker Yano, wala na akong makita.

Maybe sa internet siguro... but yeah, kinda sad because Pinikpikan is super cool. I even met one of the drummers in a party a few months back. Kay Cynthia Alexander medyo so-so ako, same with Grace Nono.

Vote for Filipino teen wowing Hong Kong with his voice
By Jude Bautista
INQUIRER.net First Posted 12:52:00 06/21/2010
MANILA, Philippines—Russell Jason “RJ” Salazar, son of Hong Kong-based Randy and Lulu Salazar, is wowing them with his singing at the former Crown colony.
The 13-year-old student of the Chinese International School is a finalist in the Star Factor Contest in Hong Kong.
Voting online ends on Friday, June 25.
The youngest child of the Salazars sang at their 25th wedding anniversary recently.
When RJ took the stage and started singing, everyone in the room just became quiet and gave him their full attention. There was sincerity in the performance. It was just this voice and a guitar. RJ sang “Use Somebody” by the King’s of Leon. There was a huge applause when he finished.
RJ’s other siblings include eldest Lorieanne, who is finishing her Master’s degree in International Educational Development in Teacher’s College Columbia in New York, and Richard, who is in his freshman year of Business Administration in Boston University.
Aside from being a great singer, RJ is a math wiz.

Filipino-Swiss racer Stockinger wins UK Championship
http://www.deichmann-photo.com/files/page0_blog_entry114_1.jpg
Atech Grand Prix’s 19- year-old Filipino-Swiss racing sensation Marlon Stockinger netted a pole position, maiden victory from start to finish and second place in the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship at Croft last weekend.
“This weekend was without doubt my best ever in single-seater racing, which started with my maiden pole position in Saturday’s first qualifying. I followed that up with the third fastest time in the second to give me a second row start for race two,” Stockinger said.
Race one got underway on Saturday afternoon with Stockinger making a superb getaway to take an immediate lead. For 15 laps the youngster made it look easy staying completely in control and fending off the challenges from his competitors to take his maiden victory.
Sunday’s second race proved another success for Stockinger as he capitalized well on a problem for the pole-sitter Thomas Hylkema who struggled to get away at the lights. Stockinger withstood some early pressure from third place Will Stevens but drove a controlled race to take second place.
Team principal David Hayle was delighted with the performance of his driver this weekend, the mid-way point in the championship.
“What a fantastic result for Marlon, the whole team is delighted for him, he didn’t put a wheel wrong all weekend and this was our most consistent performance this season. Now we must ensure we can nail qualifying for Marlon as we head into the second half of the season as I have no doubt he is more than capable of challenging for race wins” said Hayle.
The series now enjoys a lengthy seven-week summer break in the schedule before it resumes with rounds at Snetterton, Silverstone, Knockhill and Brands Hatch, supporting the British Touring Car series.
