To their surprise, Charo Ronquillo, Charlene Alvarez, and Danica Magpantay were 3 out of the 24 models who made it to the Levi's Fall/Winter Fashion Collection Preview in New York's Soho District yesterday. It's an exclusive and private preview that showcases different Levi's lines worn by live models presented in various installations. "Sobrang na-surprise po kaming tatlo, as in, 'Na-gets mo? Na-gets mo? Na-gets mo?' 'Yeah, na-gets ko! Go!' Then nagkita-kita po kami ng call time as in ang saya-saya namin. Hug kami," said Ronquillo, 2nd runner-up in the Ford Supermodel of the World contest in 2005. Magpantay made Filipinos proud when she was crowned Ford Supermodel of the World 2011 in New York last January. Since then she has been working nonstop but she's happy to find out that more and more Filipinos are getting into the New York fashion scene. The Levi's show is extra special for her because she got to work with 2 of her Pinay supermodel friends. "Ito 'yung first time naming tatlong mag-work. Si Chat I’ve been with her in some presentations and some shows which is fun kasi makikita mo talaga na certain designers really like our look and hindi mahirap na makapasok ang Filipino ngayon. Ngayon tatlo kami. It’s Levi’s, it's big!' Magpantay said. Levi's Jeans publicist Melissa Ladines said they want models from different kinds of ethnicities. "I think most brands are going global. We sell Levi’s all over the world, so we wanna cast all models from different kinds of ethnicities just so we have a lot of representation," Ladines said. While many people see the glitz and glamor side of the fashion industry, these Pinay supermodels say it's all hard work, sweat, and tears, especially during Fashion Week where many of them have to attend 15 castings a day scattered in different parts of the Big Apple. "Takbo ka ng takbo all over the city. Tapos pagkatapos nung araw, may paltos paltos ka. Tapos hindi mo alam kung makukuha mo 'yung job or ano. Mahirap. Mahirap bago mo makuha ang isang trabaho," said Alvarez, 1st runner-up in the Ford Supermodel of the World 2010. Looking fabulous and glamorous is key to making supermodels look even more stunning on and off the catwalk. Albee Franson, the head makeup artist for the Levi's preview who made these girls ready for their close-ups, happens to be Filipino-American. "My gosh, I was in awe when I found out there were 3 Filipino models out of the 20 models that we have here. I actually had to come up and ask them, 'What are you?' because I didn’t believe they were Filipinos. I love that they bring a different kind of look to the set. So pretty," said Franson. The achievements of these Filipinos in New York's fashion scene is only making it easier for future Filipino supermodels to make their dreams come true in the Big Apple. filcan April 1st, 2011, 05:13 PM ^^Manila will be the next Milan ;) Ady001 April 2nd, 2011, 08:53 AM ^^ Just take one a and juxtapose the letters. :D rain34 April 2nd, 2011, 12:53 PM Our supermodels might become the future face of fashion since now Asia is recently becoming popular in the World stage filcan April 3rd, 2011, 01:29 AM ^^ Just take one a and juxtapose the letters. :D ^^ I know right?..i was going to say you can't spell Manila without Milan but that wouldn't be right. :D filcan April 3rd, 2011, 01:30 AM Our supermodels might become the future face of fashion since now Asia is recently becoming popular in the World stage ^^Mainly Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong at the moment but hopefully Manila will join that list. s_w_stars April 3rd, 2011, 04:43 PM From goodnewspilipinas.com Fil-Am singer-actor Michael Copon Proud to be Pinoy Posted on March 29th, 2011 under Entertainment Success http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Michael-Copon.jpeg Michael Copon He could pass for a Latino but Michael Copon, a Fil-Am singer-actor, would tell anybody who mistook him for one that he is Filipino — that is, as Filipino as pansit and sinigang and adobowhich have been part of his diet since way back when. That’s why when he was offered to be the front act for Bruno Mars’ concert on April 7 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu and at the Araneta Coliseum on April 8, Michael said yes right away. “I’ve been looking forward to visiting the Philippines,” Michael told Funfare in an exclusive one-on-one last Sunday afternoon at his room at the Discovery Suites, barely 24 hours after he flew in from California (he lives in Studio City, a few minutes away from Universal Studios). He’s two weeks early for the concert — for a good reason. “It’s my first time here,” added Michael whose father is a Filipino and whose mother is an American. “I want to get acquainted with my dad’s birthplace. My aunts in the US have been telling me, ‘Michael, you need to go to the Philippines.’ My dad is from Cavite and my mom, well, is a mix of everything — American, German, Polish, etc.” Born on Nov. 13, 1982, in Cheesepeake, Virginia, Michael has been appearing in TV shows in the US(One Tree Hill, Beyond The Break, Power Rangers: Time Force, Bring It On and The Scorpion King 2: Rose of a Warrior) and in movies (The Power Rangersseries among them) since 2001. He’s also a model and a composer who writes his own songs, some of which he’s performing in his concert with Bruno Mars who is also half-Filipino. Gifted with a sense of humor, Michael is friendly. He makes you feel at ease only a few minutes into the interview. As soon as he met me at the door, bathroom-fresh, he offered me a chocolate bar and, when I commented on the baller-band bearing his e-mail address, he took it off and gave it to me, thank you. Asked how tall he was, he broke into a wide smile and said, “I’m 6’2” tall,” raising his hand to indicate height, and “11 inches,” holding his hand forward to indicate length. Then he laughed and laughed, and I, together with the others in the suite, laughed with him. It must be his “model walk” and towering good looks that made mallers take a second look at him when he, accompanied by his Filipino bodyguard, took a stroll at the nearby Shangri-La Plaza Mall that Sunday morning. So eager was Michael to explore the city that he didn’t suffer from jetlag at all even if he had traveled halfway around the world. “I want to go to Cavite and trace my roots,” said Michael, “I want to check out my relatives there.” That is, when he’s not busy mixing his music and editing the videos that he’s using for the show. “I’m a one-man production machine. I write and produce everything. I engineer everything on my own as well. I’m a certified mixing engineer in music. I’ve been acting for 11 years and singing just as long, too. I’ve gotten to a point where I can produce everything on my own.” So from whom did he inherit his love for the arts? “Everyone on my mom’s side is very artistic,” revealed Michael who was just a kid when his parents separated (he’s an only child from the marriage and has five half-siblings from his parents’ respective new partners). “My grandmother paints, my grandfather is a carpenter, my Uncle Mark is an actor, my Uncle David is a carpenter, my Uncle Greg is a web/graphic designer, and my mom cuts hair and is into fashion. I started drawing people when I was a kid. Every Christmas my folks gave me pencils and sketch pads.” Asked who, besides his relatives, has a great influence on him, Michael said, “Michael Jackson and the Beatles,” but he added that he wasn’t named after The Gloved One. “My mom liked the name Michael because she’s a fan of Michael Jordan. My other brother’s name is Jordan. By the way, I love all kinds of music. My stepfather is a Frank Sinatra fan.” And he said he plays football — “I’ve been playing it all my life, in a Fil-Am league that I grew up with.” But the American football that he plays is different from the football that the Azkals play. Even the ball is different. In American football, it’s oval-shaped; in the Azkals football, it’s round. And the mechanics are not the same. Is he more American than Filipino or the other way around? “I think I’m a little bit of both. I grew up more American but as I grew older I became interested in the Filipino culture. I’ve been learning how to speak Tagalog. I’m a huge lover of Filipino food…sinigang, adobo, pansit, mechado. “I was brought up 50/50 the American way and the Filipino way. Since my parents broke up when I was very young, I would stay half of the time with my dad and half of the time with my mom. I became accustomed to that set-up — growing up with American culture on one side and with Filipino culture on the other side. Even the food is different, Filipino on one side and American on the other side.” He recalled meeting Bruno Mars for the first time after the Grammys where Mars won an award for his hit song Just The Way You Are. “I told him that I would be opening for his show in the Philippines and he said, ‘Cool, man. See you there!’ He knew that I’m half-Filipino, too.” So proud is Michael of being a Pinoy that when he’s offered a role, which would usually be changed from Caucasian to “ethnic” to suit his looks, he would say, “Can I play a Filipino so I can speak Tagalog?” (Story courtesy of Ricky Lo of Philippine Star) Bruno Mars is just amazing. Hope they have a great concert in Cebu. s_w_stars April 3rd, 2011, 04:44 PM I dunno if this is the appropriate therad but I really want to share this. Not a new topic, but just for laughs. Though no official word has been released yet, various US entertainment websites reported on April 4 that Charice was cast in an upcoming Frank Coraci movie, “Here Comes the Boom.” Coraci is the same director behind “Click,” “Around the World in 80 Days” and “The Wedding Singer.” These websites only alleged that Charice will be playing a character named Malia, giving no further details about the role. According to hollywoodlife.com and magnustoday.net, “Here Comes the Boom” is about a music teacher (to be played, as per magnustoday.net, by “Grown Ups” and “I Now Pronounce You as Chuck & Larry” actor Kevin James) who “goes to cage fighting for prize money to keep the [school’s] music program.” Meanwhile, to strengthen their claim, examiner.com published on Monday that Charice was spotted in Boston “over the weekend on the set of a new film with some big names.” It also cited a March 31 tweet by another reported cast member, Henry Winkler (“Click”), confirming the production of the movie and that he, Hayek and James are in Boston for the shoot. A quick check on the movie’s IMDb (The Internet Movie Database) webpage revealed the status of “Here Comes the Boom” as “filming” in time for a July 29, 2012 release. Aside from Charice, Hayek and James, IMDb also listed Joe Rogan, currently a commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and host of now-defunct reality show “Fear Factor,” as part of the cast. In 2009, Charice had her Hollywood debut when she appeared as herself in the animated flick “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.” Charice is currently in the US to finish recording her second album and to tape her episodes for the hit TV musical “Glee,” where she plays exchange student Sunshine Corazon, rival to Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry. kiretoce April 6th, 2011, 01:34 AM Charice rumored to star in a Hollywood film (http://mb.com.ph/articles/312931/charice-rumored-star-a-hollywood-film) Added emphasis on the word "rumored," lest everyone jump to conclusions again. :| amigo32 April 6th, 2011, 01:39 AM Added emphasis on the word "rumored," lest everyone jump to conclusions again. :| 2 na aabangan ko kong totoo. 1. Filipino wins New York competition for fast filmmaking By CARMELA LAPENA 04/07/2011 | 10:57 AM Some epic films take years to complete. Then there are the 24-hour wonders. Paolo Dy proved that a worthy movie can be produced in just one day. The Manila-based filmmaker and commercial director won Best Overall Film and three other awards in the 2010 US National 24 Hour Film Race Competition with his two-minute film, "Creative License." Apart from winning first place, the film won the Best Direction, Best Sound Design and Audience’s Choice at the annual film race. The competition is proof that today's digital tools can shorten nearly every creative process, without necessarily sacrificing quality. Filmmaking used to be a laborious, time-consuming and expensive craft. By dumping fresh digital footage in a computer, a film can be edited on the fly these days. But the extra challenge for Dy and his experienced collaborators was working fast in unfamiliar territory -- New York. http://www.gmanews.tv/story/217144/lifestyle/filipino-wins-new-york-competition-for-fast-filmmaking kiretoce April 7th, 2011, 05:56 AM Cool! didn't know about this... He also directed Adam Sandler in “The Wedding Singer” and “Waterboy,” both of which were critical and commercial successes. This will be the second movie appearance for the teenage diva following her cameo role in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” in 2009. But Charice finds herself in very good company as far as comedies go, with the movie boasting a cast headed by Mexican-born star Salma Hayek and Kevin James, who is also joint screenwriter and producer. James is a veteran comedian and actor who has appeared in a host of comedies including “Hitch” alongside Will Smith, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” and “Grown Ups” both alongside Adam Sandler. He also starred in the sleeper hit “Mall Cop” in 2009, and recently released “The Dilemma” with Vince Vaughn (playing in movie theatres now). Salma Hayek is also featured in “Grown Ups.” 'The Wedding Singer' director by Frank Coraci According to IMDb.com, Charice is set to play the role of a girl called Malia, although there are no details yet as to where and how she fits into the plot. But what we do know according to beantownbloggery.com is that Here Comes The Boom tells the story of a high school physics teacher whose school is facing drastic budget cuts, so he decides to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter to win prize money to save his best friend’s job and the music program that his students hold dear. He ultimately winds up doing battle in the UFC. The Boston Herald reports that co-star Henry Winkler (as the best friend?) was on set just last week at Quincy High School to film his first scene as a music teacher conducting a 60-member student band. Winkler is best known for playing the iconic role of “The Fonz” on the long-running sitcom “Happy Days” in the 70′s. Charice being a singer, we’re almost positive that she was on the same set playing one of the music students, especially since she is reportedly in Boston now, doing double duty, recording new songs with Kara DioGuardi for her sophomore CD. With the music storyline, this movie project would seem a perfect fit for Charice, though it is with great interest that we wait to see what her part entails. Will she sing on screen or be a movie “extra” as a student in the background? Will she indeed be a student of the music department or fit into the story in some other way as well? It appears that Charice is likely to have some sort of speaking role since she is credited as an actress in the IMDb.com movie website, although it’s not known how substantial the role will be. The bad news is that the Columbia Pictures movie has been given an initial release date of July 2012, which means a waiting period of about 16 months. RonnieR April 7th, 2011, 10:46 AM ^^ Cool.... Led by world-ranked players Antonio Lining, Dennis Orcollo and Ronnie Alcano, nine locals hacked out opening-day victories in the Philippine Open pool championships at the Megatrade Hall of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City. Lining, the world No. 2 behind his absent countryman Francisco “Django” Bustamante, kept his nerves in hacking out a 9-7 win over a slow-playing Robbie Foldvari of Australia. Lining, the Busan 2002 Asian Games gold medalist, said he almost used up his patience keeping his focus because his opponent took so long to take a shot. “I knew I could beat him, but I had to wait for all his shots,” said the 47-year-old Lining, the 2006 Japan Open 9-ball champion. Players are given 40 seconds to take a shot and they have an option to ask for an extra 40 seconds per rack. Alcano, a two-time world champion, crushed Singapore’s Desmond Go Chin Teck, 9-4 while world No. 3 and newly crowned World 8-Ball king Orcollo turned back hard-fighting compatriot Demosthenes Pulpul, 9-7. “It’s been so long since I won a big tournament. I hope luck comes my way here and during the World 10-ball in May,” said Alcano, who won the World 9-ball and World 8-ball in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Also notching wins for the Filipinos were Marlon Manalo, Jundel Mazon, Lee Van Cortez, Oliver Medenilla, Renemar David and Jerico Banares. Manalo drew first blood for the 19 Filipino cue masters entered in the men’s division when he escaped with a 9-8 squeaker over Bobby Lee Chenman of Hong Kong. Corteza, the 2010 US Open 10-ball champion, pulled off an impressive 9-5 win over Rafath Habib of India, 9-5, while Jundel Mazon prevailed over Venancio Tanio, 9-1. Oliver Medenilla downed Md. Alias Bin Hj Raschid of of Brunei, 9-6; Renemar David prevailed over Mohanna Obaidly of Qatar, 9-6, while Jerico Banares ripped Raymond Faraon, 9-2, in the third all-Filipino encounter. Lo Li Wen, a naturalized Japanese with Taiwanese roots, upset former world 9-ball and 10-ball champ Mika Immonen of Finland, 9-6. Another Japanese fashioned out a similar shocker as Naoyuki Oi routed American World No. 9 Shane Van Boening, 9-4. Japanese Tour veteran Ramil Gallego and Jeff de Luna proved the day’s biggest losers for the host country as they dropped close decisions to their respective rivals. Gallego bowed 7-9 to World No. 19 Nguyen Phuc Long of Vietnam while De Luna rallied from 5-8 only to lose in a hill-hill situation to Chang Pei Wei of Chinese Taipei, 8-9. The first-round victims try to stay alive in the losers’ bracket which will produce the top two players who will join the other two from the winners’ section in the semifinals. In the women’s division, World 10-ball champion Jasmin Ouschan of Austria blanked Veronique Menard of Canada, 9-0, and World No. 1 Kim Ga Young matched that feat in also blanking Aradhana Naik of India, 9-0. World No.3 Fu Xiao-Fang cruised to a 9-4 win over Vietnamese qualifier Duong Thuy Vi. amigo32 April 8th, 2011, 04:44 AM ^^ not that I hate singing talents, but I would rather listen to SATB choirs rather than shitty pop / rnb singers. Mars arrived in Cebu for his Thursday concert at Waterfront Hotel at 7 p.m. He is set to do another show the following night (Friday) at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. In his official Twitter account, Mars said that he is excited to perform for his Filipino fans. "I don't think Cebu knows how excited I am about playing tonight.. I just did 16 sit ups and drank a gallon of Red Bull. #Buckle Up!," Mars said. The Filipino-American artist, a rising R&B star, is behind the hit songs "Just The Way You Are," "Grenade," "Marry You" and "Nothin' On You." Mars is one of the big international stars who are set to perform in the country this year. The list also includes Justin Bieber. Last February Taylor Swift also staged a concert at the Big Dome. Lo The Philippine Star Updated April 08, 2011 http://www.philstar.com/funfare/Article.aspx?articleId=674210&publicationSubCategoryId=70 CEBU CITY, Philippines — It’s 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon and Bruno Mars, who flew in the day before, is relaxing at the poolside of the Waterfront Hotel before his concert tonight (April 7) at the hotel’s ballroom. Like his concert at the Araneta Coliseum (Friday night, April 8), tickets to the Cebu show are sold out, no wonder Marvin Agustin is heaving a big sigh of relief that the first venture of his new outfit, Futuretainment Productions, is a success even as he gears up for his next project, the Maroon 5 concert next month. Bruno is wearing a fatigue jacket over a jersey tee, with a towel wrapped about his waist. He’s a bit sunburned after basking in the Philippine sun which is less harsh than the sun in Hawaii where he grew up. No doubt he’s a big star especially after having won an award in the recent Grammys for his hit song Just The Way You Are (which is different from the Billy Joel song of the same title). The security around him is tight. Contrary to what my friend Raoul Tidalgo and I feared, Bruno isn’t hard to interview. He is easy and breezy, very friendly in the way island folks are, and is surprisingly shorter than he looks on screen or on stage. This much I have gathered from the Internet: He was born Peter Gene Hernandez in Waikiki, Hawaii. His father, Pete Hernandez, is Puerto Rican and a percussion player who moved to Hawaii from New York; and his mother, Bernadette (Bernie) Hernandez, is Filipino said to be a hula dancer who migrated to Hawaii when she was a kid. Bruno’s father is a fan of wrestler Bruno Sammartino, so he nicknamed his only son Bruno. But Mars came from somewhere else. In an interview, Bruno was quoted as saying, “I felt like I didn’t have any pizzazz and a lot of girls say I’m out of this world, so I was like I guess I’m from Mars.” Bruno admitted being an Elvis Presley fan since he was a kid and a magazine even featured him as a “Little Elvis.” He did a cameo in the movie Honeymoon in Vegas in 1992, according to an Internet report. The questions for this exclusive interview (The STAR is the only Philippine paper that Bruno Mars agreed to talk to face-to-face) were reviewed by Bruno’s handlers a week earlier. No question that delved into anything controversial and everything was approved. Tell me the background of Just The Way You Are. “Hmmmm…the inspiration of that song…You know, I have four sisters, I’m the middle child, and I tell you, everybody is insecure, even the most beautiful woman in the world is insecure about something. I remember watching a girlfriend get ready to go out to dinner and I could see all the works she put in just to make herself feel beautiful and sexy when she already thought she looked great with what she was wearing. And, you know, the song is telling her that ‘I love you already. You look beautiful just the way you are’.” Did you have a particular girl when you wrote the song? “I think it’s from, you know, just dealing with a bunch of different women in my life…” Oh, a bunch of women? That’s a lot! (Blushing and laughing) “Hmmmm, you know. I just told you that I have four sisters.” How was it growing up with four sisters? Were you spoiled by your sisters? “Well, it’s different, you know. It’s great! I love my sisters.” Do you feel protective towards your sisters? “Definitely! Not just protective; I’m over-protective. You can’t help feeling that way because you have to deal with new boyfriends and stuff like that. That’s the hard part about being an only brother.” From whom do you draw inspiration for your songs? “Ahhh, you know, it’s a different story every time. As a songwriter, you have to be a storyteller. When you write a story, you know, how do you make it interesting? So I find my inspiration from things that have been through my life, where I’m going, where I wanna be — you know, to be a billionaire. Hmmmm, that would be my ‘wish’ record. One day, I don’t want to worry about money and be able to take care of the ones I love, just the way you are, dealing with heartbreak and things like that.” Your looks are very Filipino. What else is Filipino about you…your upbringing maybe? “My mom is from Manila. I grew up with my mom’s side, a big Filipino family. So I grew up on Filipino food.” How much have you heard about the Philippines? It’s your first visit here, isn’t it? “Yeah, it’s my first time here; I’ve never made it out here yet. My whole life has been Filipino. I grew up proud of my heritage. It’s just nice to be here.” Of course, you know that Filipinos are the most “musical” people in the world. “Definitely! I’ve got a lot of uncles and aunts who spend a lot of time in karaoke bars.” Do you still have relatives in the Philippines? Aren’t you planning to visit them? “Yeah, a lot of them! They are all coming down to the show (last night in Cebu and tonight at the Araneta Coliseum).” Have you worked with any Filipino artist? “Yeah. I just produced a song for Charice. It’s called Before They Explode.” What’s the song about? “It’s a love song. It says, ‘We have to stop the madness before our love explodes’.” And any chance of you working with other world-famous artists, like Alan Pineda (apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas), Arnel Pineda (of Journey) and MiG Ayesa (the Filipino-Australian now starring in the hit musical Rock of Ages on Broadway)? “I would love to. But you know who I want to work on? Manny Pacquiao! I want to work on Pacquiao’s album.” Really? “Yeah, I’d love to!” Would you like to sing a duet with him? “Yeah, absolutely!” Have you heard him sing? “Yeah. He’s great!” Do you think Pacquiao can make it big as a singer? “I think he can be the biggest Filipino artist in the world.” Are you serious? “Absolutely!” When did you realize that you could sing? Do you remember the first song that you learned how to sing? “Yeah, I probably started really studying how to sing when I was 13. You know, I’ve been singing since I was four years old but as far as really learning how to sing, I think I was 13 or 14 then.” You’re a big fan of Elvis Presley. Any other artists who have influenced you and your music? “Oh, man! I listen to everything. I’m a big fan of the Police, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Queen and Kanye West. There’s a lot of great music out there and I feel that as a producer it’s my job to learn as much music as possible.” What would you consider the song of your life, the song that means so much to you? (Thinks a while) “Hmmmm, wow…Personally, it’s Grenade, my song.” Why that song? “Well, because I feel that I let it all out in that song — unleashed the monster that was inside of me.” Oh, are there a lot of monsters inside of you? “No, no! As far as heartbreak is concerned, you know, it’s not easy for a man to tell a story about a woman breaking his heart.” Have you ever been heartbroken? “Absolutely!” A lot of times? “Maybe once.” (Then he laughs) “No, I’m kidding!” What are the pluses and minuses of being a star singer? “You know, that’s a whole new lifestyle for me — lack of privacy.” How do you deal with it? “Well, you just have to understand what you sign up for. You know, it goes with the territory. If you wanna tour the world and, you know, see the world playing your tune, that issue comes with it. It hasn’t been a problem with me because I really love everybody that’s supporting my career and taking the time out to come to my shows. You know, the fans… I want to show them as much love as I possibly can.” If you were to woo a girl with your song or that of another artist, what would it be? “It would be Macho Man by the Village People.” Why that song? “Because I would want her to know that I’m a macho man.” Okay, so what could we expect from your concert at the Araneta Coliseum (tonight)? “You know what, expect me to give my all. That’s what I do every time I have a show — give my all. I’m just excited, man. I’m in the Philippines, you know.” Narnian_King April 8th, 2011, 02:04 PM Bruno Mars arrives in Manila abs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 04/07/2011 3:54 PM | Updated as of 04/07/2011 10:27 PM http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sites/default/files/a_images/topics/tvpatrol/2011february/021711_brunomars.jpg MANILA, Philippines - Filipino-American singer Bruno Mars arrived here on Thursday for a 2-night concert. MATABUENA April 8, 2011, 5:28pm MANILA, Philippines – For the first time, the creations of a Filipino designer will be featured in an episode of the Emmy-award winning reality show, “America’s Next Top Model.” According to “ANTM”’s official website, the “eco-friendly couture creations” of Dubai-based fashion designer Michael Cinco were worn by the contestants in a photo shoot done at a landfill. The girls were shot by photographer and “ANTM” judge Nigel Barker, who, incidentally, was rumored to be arriving in the Philippines purportedly this month to photograph select personalities for an exhibit. The episode will air in the US next week, April 13. It was first revealed in a separate story published on philstar.com on March 2 by Pinoy “ANTM” producer Michael Carandang that the show will be featuring a Filipino designer for the first time. At the time, however, the producer refused to name said designer. Carandang, who has been working for top model and “ANTM” creator Tyra Banks for many years now, said that Banks and the rest of the “ANTM” staff were very impressed with Cinco’s works. “I’m really proud to be able to bring Filipino talents on ‘ANTM.’ I took a chance, Tyra and my bosses bought into that risk. It was all worth it. The clothes were impeccable, like art works,” the producer was quoted by philstar.com as saying. Despite being based away from home, Cinco already did shows at the Philippine Fashion Week and at the 2010 Bench Fashion Show. He may also be remembered by some for his attention-grabbing swan gown worn by “Imortal” star and Best Actress nominee Angel Locsin when she attended the 2009 Emmy Awards in New York. Meanwhile, actress G. Tongi also made an appearance in an episode of the same TV show, albeit a brief one. In her official website, Tongi listed "ANTM" as one of her TV gigs and credited herself as a "Planted Fan." Based from “ANTM” previews and episode recaps, Tongi was seen in the 6th episode (aired March 30) as one of the individuals who talked to the contestants in a challenge where the latter had to deal with different kinds of fans. Tongi is currently based in Los Angeles. Recall that word about Toengi’s "ANTM" stint surfaced late last year when actor Robin da Roza tweeted, “@gtongi has a part in next seasons Americas Next Top Model.... Im proud of her.. she did a good job...... great job.... taray mo!!! According to the website IMDb.com (Internet Movie Database), the movie – about a music teacher who is forced to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter in the hopes of saving his school’s music program – is currently in production and scheduled for release in July 2012. This marks the first time that the 18-year-old Charice will play a character, Malia. In her debut appearance in a Hollywood film, the 2009 live-action cartoon adaptation “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” Charice played herself in a cameo role. “Here Comes the Boom!” is directed by Frank Coraci, whose recent credits include “The Wedding Singer,” “The Waterboy,” “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Click.” The Mexico-born Hayek has starred in a number of films including “Desperado,” “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “Frida” – for which she received an Oscar best actress nomination. James had a recurring role in the TV sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond." He has since acted in his own sitcom, "The King of Queens." Winkler, most famous for his role as The Fonz in the hit 1970s TV show “Happy Days,” was also in the cast of “The Waterboy,” among other movie credits. :applause: ^^ :okay: Narnian_King April 9th, 2011, 01:57 AM 5_U-AimYubg The true international star!!!! The Big Dome was packed last night for the Bruno Mars concert. Fans screamed their throats dry as they listened and sang along with the singer-songwriter's hit songs. Elyas Isabelo Salanga Saturday, April 9, 2011 08:53 PM The streets of Cubao on a Friday night are typically filled with people walking to their destinations. Some are going shopping; others are meeting friends for dinner or coffee in or around Gateway Mall. Last night, April 8, 2011, was no exception. However, many people found their way to Araneta Coliseum, slowly filling up the venue's 16,500 seats, for the Bruno Mars concert. Born Peter Gene Hernandez to a Filipina mom and a Puerto Rican dad in Honolulu, Hawaii, Bruno pursued a musical career after graduating from high school. At first, he was producing songs for the production outfit, The Smeezingtons. His vocal talent was recognized in the song, "Nothin' on You," the debut single from American rapper B.o.B. featuring Bruno Mars. His popularity skyrocketed after another successful collaboration, this time with Travie McCoy in the song "Billionaire." Deciding on a solo career proved fruitful for Bruno as his songs "Grenade" and "Just The Way You Are" were instant hits. He was nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are." BACK TO THE CONCERT. Friday night, Araneta Coliseum was packed. To warm up the audience, singer Juris serenaded the crowd with her single, "Sa 'Yo Lamang." It was time for the crowd to power up their legs as Hollywood actor (Power Rangers, One Tree Hill) and dancer Michael Copon and the Philippine All-Stars did an energetic dance number. Cheers turned into a roar when Michael asked, "Are you ready for Bruno Mars?" It took another 20 minutes before Bruno appeared, but he was worth the wait. Running up the stage with his band members, Bruno Mars sang "Other Side" and the crowd roared even louder. Following it up with "Top Of The World," he and his band danced to the beat and did some wicked hip-pumping in the crowd's direction. The energy did not stop there; he segued to "Billionaire," a song recognized by everyone in the Big Dome. Everyone stood up and sang along with Bruno. To calm the audience a bit, he sang "Slow Down" and "Our First Time." But the mushy stuff didn't last long as he pumped up the crowd again with his rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean," strummed with Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Bruno paid tribute to couples in the audience singing "Marry You," "Lazy Day," "Count On Me," and "Liquor Store." He even coaxed couples to kiss! In his rendition of "Nothin' On You," fans sang along. NO INTERMISSION. Except for an occasional sip of water, Bruno Mars sang and danced nonstop. When he did "Grenade," the crowd exploded with cheers as his melodic and unfaltering voice touched everyone — male and female. In his finale, "Just The Way You Are," the crowd at Araneta Coliseum waved cellphone lights as they sang along with Bruno Mars. It was a sight to behold. Looking at the appreciative crowd, Bruno thanked everyone for coming to his concert. He pointed to a section in the audience and said, "My family's here! My grandma, sister, and mom!" He added, "I'm very, very proud to say I'm a Filipino!" He waved a few more times and then he and his band left the stage. Of course, the audience wouldn't have that. Thunderous chants of "We want more! We want more!" literally shook the place. Not to disappoint, Bruno re-appeared and did one last fantastic dance number with his band going all out on the instrumentals. With cheers dying down, it was time to get back to Earth after a fantastic night with Mars. Bruno Mars: Filipino and proud of it By Pocholo Concepcion Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 13:26:00 04/09/2011 Filed Under: Music, Celebrities, Entertainment (general) MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) Bruno Mars drove more than 10,000 people crazy with a spellbinding performance Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum. He made it more special by stirring national pride among the mostly local audience. “I am Filipino!” he proclaimed near the end of the sold-out concert. Born Peter Gene Hernandez in Hawaii to a Puerto Rican father and Filipino mother, the recent Grammy winner and hotshot singer-songwriter pointed out that his Filipino clan was watching with the crowd, including his grandparents and his mother, Bernadette. On Thursday night his relatives also joined him at the Waterfront Cebu Hotel where he held his first of two concerts, bankrolled by actor-restaurateur Marvin Agustin with a couple of celebrity folks as partners. At the Big Dome, where SRO tickets had to be sold to accommodate a huge demand from fans, the 25-year-old Mars presented a show that revealed his deep love for classic rock ’n’ roll. Even before the gig started, the house music primed the audience with a selection of hits by Elvis Presley, The Temptations, among others. Striding onstage and momentarily banging on the drums as a warm-up, Mars settled down with an electric guitar, accompanied by a five-piece band composed of Afro-Americans and Asians. But his opening number, “The Other Side,” a track from his debut album “Doo-Wops and Hooligans,” burned with vocal passion and musical ferocity. Throughout the show he laid bare his R&B, soul and reggae influences. On the third song, he launched into a raging version of Barrett Strong’s 1959 hit “Money (That’s What I Want)” – famously covered by The Beatles – as an intro to “Billionaire,” the worldwide hit by Travie McCoy which Mars co-wrote and produced. “Can we slow down?” he asked the crowd before playing his own tune, “Our First Time,” channeling Michael Jackson but more erotic in tone – the song’s raging-hormones theme tempered only by a cool reggae beat. Mars followed it with an all-out homage to Jackson: a faster version of “Billie Jean” with clanging guitars reminiscent of The Troggs’ 1965 hit “Wild Thing,” and “I Want You Back,” the Jackson 5’s 1969 first single on the Motown label. The crowd went nuts upon hearing the next song, “Marry You,” an original track off “Doo-Wops and Hooligans,” distinctly memorable for its driving rhythms and happy wedding bells background. But not everything was bright and sunshiny in Mars’ songs. “Liquor Store Blues,” though arranged in engaging dancehall-reggae style, was in fact dark and gloomy, the lyrics howling with drunkenness and desolation: “One shot for my pain…” There was pandemonium when Mars proceeded with “Nothin’ on You,” another worldwide hit (No. 1 in the United States, United Kingdom and the Netherlands) which he co-wrote and produced with hip hop artist B.o.B. But apparently Mars preferred the audience to likewise appreciate the next tune, “Grenade,” which he said was his personal favorite. Like “Liquor Store Blues,” it was not a happy song, its sentiments dripping with frustration: “I would die for you, but you won’t do the same.” Hysteria accompanied his own No. 1 hit, “Just the Way You Are,” the audience taking over the song’s chorus. There was one more impressive showcase via the encore, “Runaway Baby,” in which Mars lent credence to his album and tour title “Doo-Wops” by doing a James Brown act, complete with a backup vocal trio. His footwork elicited applause, even if he couldn’t execute a full leg split. The gig, which lasted for an hour-and-a-half, also displayed Mars’ guitar-playing skills. On “Grenade” his axe wailed with blasts of hard rock. But on “Count on Me” he switched to a ukulele, evoking laid-back beach scenes not unlike those in Hawaii where he grew up. He said it was his first time to come to the Philippines where his mother was born. He vowed to be back, overwhelmed by the crowd’s lusty cheers: “I want to see the same faces when I return, okay?” http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/topstories/topstories/view/20110409-330223/Bruno-Mars-Filipino-and-proud-of-it Narnian_King April 11th, 2011, 09:55 AM Thanks for sharing this. A preview of “Before It Explodes” is available on Amazon.com and is reportedly hitting the airwaves on April 18. Meanwhile, the Filipino-American pop star was named by People Magazine as one of the Most Beautiful of 2011 (25 Beauties and Hotties at 25), joining the likes of “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson, “Red Riding Hood” star Amanda Seyfried, “Transformers” star Shia LeBeouf, among others. The US magazine explained his inclusion in the roster: “The R&B pop star from Hawaii always had the It factor – just check out recently surfaced videos of him as a 4-year-old. Filipina nanny invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/308254/filipina-nanny-invited-prince-william-and-kate-middleton-s-wedding) MANILA, Philippines – Prince William apparently has not forgotten one of his former nannies, Bacolod native Araceli Piccio, as she has been invited to his royal union with Kate Middleton in April. As stated in his column published on March 7, Bacolod society columnist Nimfa “Buddai” Piccio confirmed to entertainment host-writer Ricky Lo that her sister, Araceli, received one of the almost 2,000 invites distributed last month for the much-awaited wedding that will take place at the Westminster Abbey in London. The invitation, Buddai added, is good for Araceli, plus one. Araceli’s presence in the occasion will put her in the same venue with other royal figures, political leaders, and celebrities including power couple David and Victoria Beckham. Prince William might also fulfill a vow he made to Araceli. Buddai recalled to Ricky what the prince told the nanny when he was 16: “When I get married, I will take you back.” Fondly called “Miss Lillie” by Prince William’s mother no less, Princess Diana, Araceli served as part of the royal household staff until she resigned a few years after Princess Di’s untimely death in 1997, added Ricky Lo’s report. She was also the nanny of Prince William’s brother, Prince Harry. Ricky noted that Araceli is the only Filipina in the royal household as well as “the first Filipina ever to have been employed by the Royal Family.” Araceli, a nurse who had a part-time stint at ITV-4, got hired after she met a lady who was in charge of recruiting candidates for the royal household, as “Miss Lillie” herself recounted to Ricky in his 1989 story. Working for Princess Diana, her husband Prince Charles and their two sons was something that Araceli enjoyed. She recalled that Princess Di used to ask her to wake her up in the morning. She also recounted the warmth and generosity of the Royal Couple, never forgetting the birthdays of their staff and giving them gifts with personalized cards, as well as hosting "barbeque parties" where Princess Di and Prince Charles bonded with their staff. Araceli is currently in London working under a different employer, the Ricky Lo report added. RonnieR April 12th, 2011, 05:27 AM Hehehe ayus din ang cute, pwede na itong pang masa! After the press launch on Tuesday, April 12, of Advil's Liqui-gel which Jericho endorses, Yahoo! OMG! Philippines had a sit-down interview with him where he talked about his role and experiences in the said independently-produced Hollywood movie. Jericho plays the lead character Victor, a Filipino computer hacker suspected of authoring the destructive "I Love You" virus at the turn of the millennium. Jericho, who is the lead star in the ABS-CBN primetime series "Green Rose," plays alongside Dean Cain of "Lois and Clark," Dante Basco of "Hook," Briana Evigan of "Step Up 2," and Kristin Bauer of "True Blood." Filipino artists Joel Torre, Gary Valenciano and Black Eyed Peas singer Apl De Ap are also in the film's cast. "Subject: I Love You" is directed by Francis dela Torre. As this is Jericho's first international movie, he feels proud and excited yet humbled of this project. "Ako syempre bilang isang simpleng Filipino actor, for me it's a dream come true," Jericho shared. On how he bagged the lead role, Jericho attended the audition here in Manila upon hearing the announcement. "It was my ex's birthday and told her that I really have to go. So, I went to the audition and I did it. It was all in English, so I had to memorize some lines, some were adlib lang," Jericho told Yahoo! OMG Philippines. Despite his solid acting experience, Jericho didn't rest on his laurels. "Siyempre, I tried my best talaga. I would talk to other people there and threw in some lines," Jericho added. Upon hearing that he passed the audition, "Nagsisitalon ako sa Rockwell. I was so excited. Although independently-produced siya, the goal is to show it abroad," Jericho shared. Jericho also revealed he was nervous meeting his co-actors for the first time at the Edsa Shangri-la. "I was just keeping my hands under the table, hindi ako makakain. Tatlong wine ang nainom ko before ako nakakain," Jericho mused. Jericho also said he felt embarrassed when he acted like a fan in front of Dante Basco, who played Rufio in the movie "Hook." "After that, naging kaibaigan ko rin si Dante, we got close. Naging kaibigan ko rin sila Briana, Dean Cain," Jericho said. This movie project is a dream come true for Jericho who has already acted in many local movies and TV series. "Itong "Subject: I Love You" talagang blessing sya sa akin, hulog ng langit. It was just amazing. Yung editing, ibang klase. Ito yung dream ko, seeing myself in that quality of film," Jericho said to Yahoo! OMG Philippines. According to Jericho, he felt like a real actor during his whole experience in filming the movie. "I had my own trailer. I work for 12 hours, there was plenty of food. We work on time. They were super professional. I really felt like an actor, they call me Mr. Rosales," Jericho told Yahoo! OMG Philippines. The movie was shot in English and Jericho was asked to act normally as a Filipino who speaks English, without using slang. "Sabi nila sa'kin, they just want me to act as a Filipino na nagi-English. Inenjoy ko lang yun, para akong nasa Disneyland. So, all I had to do is to be myself there and memorize my lines. I didn't have to bring my clothes, sila na bahala doon. Just really be myself pagdating doon," Jericho added. Jericho also shared that difference of working on a Hollywood movie as against local productions. "I wish Philippines could have money to produce those kinds of films. I wish that the support of the Filipinos will be doubled," he added. Being able to work in an international movie for the first time, Jericho has high hopes for the local movie industry. "Request ko lang is for the government to allocate some money para rin mamatay yung piracy at makaproduce ng magagandang pelikula. Kasi kaya naman natin mag-compete eh. The world is a stage and now is the time for Filipinos to shine," Jericho said. .. spearhead April 14th, 2011, 11:20 PM ^^If i were Jericho, i will run for president in philippine film industry. But some places recognize the tricycle's usefulness, and one of those places is the Philippines, where the three-wheeled wonders are a keystone of public transit. Now the country is taking another step forward by upgrading its gasoline-powered trikes to electric. Obviously not designed to compete with, say, electric motorcycles on speed or style, they do have a certain yellow-school-bus charm. More important than aesthetic concerns, the new electric models will have one-quarter the carbon footprint of their gas-burning predecessors; in a nation where tricycles burn nearly five billion dollars worth of fuel each year, emitting ten million tons of carbon dioxide, that's a huge impact. The government also hopes to save tens of millions of dollars by upgrading; it's already committed to 20,000 trikes for the capital, with more to follow nationwide. If electric tricycles succeed in the Philippines, maybe we'll all be one step closer to eliminating the stigma of the third wheel – at least when it comes to transportation. http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/19/philippines-launches-electric-tricycles-reignites-your-infatuat/ Fraulein April 19th, 2011, 02:21 PM Charice releases ‘Before It Explodes,’ more songs today http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/314824/charice-releases-before-it-explodes-more-songs-today By JULIEN MERCED C. MATABUENA April 19, 2011, 6:20pm http://www.mb.com.ph/sites/default/files/charice_27.jpg Charice released not just one song today as originally expected, but four. She is also set to release another solo single in May. MANILA, Philippines – International singing sensation Charice invades iTunes with several new solo singles. Indeed, apart from “Before It Explodes,” two other singles are released on the site today: "One Day" and a cover of "All By Myself." Charice promoted “One Day” on Tuesday around noon through her Twitter account, “Another new song!! Produced and written by @NickJonas” followed by the download link to iTunes. Nick Jonas is part of the pop trio, the Jonas Brothers. Prior to this post, no report about “One Day” surfaced locally. “One Day” is the song used in US contact lens brand Acuvue’s latest TV commercial that also features Charice. In the video, posted on Acuvue’s YouTube account on April 13, the singer encourages viewers to join the "ACUVUE 1-DAY Contest with Charice," whose main prize is an opportunity to co-star with her in the forthcoming music video for the same song. The contest, which has kicked off on April 18 (US time), will end on May 23. On the other hand, “Before It Explodes” already gained much popularity locally about a week before its release when it was promoted via Amazon.com and reported by ABS-CBN News. The song was written by Ari Levine and Fil-Am Grammy-winner Bruno Mars, and produced by the Smeezingtons. As of this writing, both “Before It Explodes” and “One Day” have already garnered positive reviews, with an average rating of five stars each on US iTunes. Charice's third solo song to be released today is her rendition of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" from the hit TV series, "Glee." It was reported earlier that Charice's character, Sunshine Corazon, will be making her comeback on Wednesday's (local time) "A Night of Neglect" episode, where she would be seen belting out the song. Also today, the 13-year-old Canadian and Charice's fellow Youtube sensation, Greyson Chance, released his four-track EP, “Waiting Outside the Lines” via iTunes. The song, which had been a hit for Chance in 2010, features Charice in the EP's remix version. Meanwhile, Charice’s official website mentioned the release of another new single reportedly in May. ” Entitled “Louder,” the Dreamlab-produced song was written by Daniel James, Leah Haywood and Shelly Peiken. More, fansite charicemania.com quoted a report by Japanese music website barks.jp on March 31 that “Louder” is being used exclusively as theme for Fuji Television Network’s morning show “Mezamashi TV.” It turned out Charice was commissioned to do a song for “Mezamashi TV” after her impressive performance on the show last Christmas. Said report from Charice’s official website also hinted that “Before It Explodes,” “Louder,” and “Waiting Outside the Lines [Remix]” may be included in her upcoming second international album by Reprise Records. However, its release date remains unknown as of this writing. Charice released her eponymous first international album in March last year and debuted at no. 8 on the Billboard 200 Chart with 43,000 copies sold in the US alone. No exact figures as to how many copies were sold worldwide, but last year "Charice" has reached gold status in Thailand and Japan, and peaked at no. 6 in Japan’s Oricon chart, no. 4 in the Canadian album charts and no. 3 in South Korea’s Gaon Chart, among others. According to the report, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Outkast and Drake have been spotted wearing the brand's clothes and Rapper Nas mentioned them in one of his songs. The Filipinos who run the brand incorporate the gang lifestyle in many of the designs, which was part of their environment while growing up in Cerritos, California. Design Director Emil Soriano told BalitangAmerica.TV that they try to relate their interests, such as going to gun ranges, to what they do in the brand. The name Crooks & Castles was inspired by hip hop lyrics, reports BalitangAmerica.TV. "We started building more meaning towards it like behind every castle there's a crook. Behind every empire there's someone that did something dirty to get there," said founder Dennis Calvero, also a former Marc Ecko designer. Founded in 2002, Crooks & Castles has branches on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles and in Hawaii. According to BalitangAmerica.TV, a few members of the Crooks team will soon perform with some of the musicians who wear the brand. Now on free TV, the said “Glee” episode featured storyline and sub-plots centered on experiences of neglect experienced by the TV serial’s characters. Sunshine, who traded her spot in the McKinley high school choir for a membership in rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline during this season’s pilot, begged to return as a role player for New Directions. She pleaded for the gleeks to allow her into the group again to join their benefit performance. And to prove that she’s worth the spot, Sunshine belted out what she called the perfect “song about neglect,” Celine Dion’s version of “All By Myself.” “When I found out about the song [I was to perform], I freaked out [because] I’ve been singing that song since I was a kid,” Charice said via viral interview shot during the “Neglect” taping. “I felt that I was shooting the first episode again. [The experience was still] nerve-wracking. I just couldn’t believe that I’m here again,” she expressed In “Audition,” season two’s pilot, Sunshine bailed from joining New Directions after Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) pointed her to a crack house to audition instead of at the school’s auditorium. In yesterday’s drama, Sunshine divided the club’s members on whether or not they should take her in. She figured “All By Myself” will settle things in her favor not knowing that her strength as an able main singer renewed threat to diva-positive members Rachel and Mercedes (Amber Riley). As expected, even Sunshine’s rivals applauded her involuntarily, a scene that was pretty much the same when she soloed “Listen” in her previous “Glee” guesting. But this is not the first time Charice conquered “All By Myself” to pitch-perfect heights. She faced several standing ovations after singing the song during the run of “David Foster and Friends” concert series. Fellow recurring “Glee” star Ashley Fink (Lauren Zizes in the show), who was not present in the first episode, called Charice’s performance “incredible.” “It’s incredible! It’s crazy, to see something so large coming from someone so tiny,” she said in the same behind-the-scenes footage before challenging viewers. “Be ready, America. Bring a tissue.” “Glee” previously reduced its fans to more tears than usual during the episode “Grilled Cheesus” back in October 2010. Charice, who just released her version of the Ari-Levine-and-Bruno-Mars-penned “Before It Explodes,” has other singles (“Louder” and “Waiting Outside The Lines”) planned for release. “It’s thrilling to work with so many talented songwriters and producers… I had a fantastic time in the studio recording these songs and can’t wait to perform them live for my fans,” she said. Charice is scheduled to co-star as Maila Dela Cruz opposite Salma Hayek, Kevin James and Henry Winkler in “Here Comes The Boom.” Fraulein April 22nd, 2011, 03:52 AM Cecile Licad debut in Moscow: ‘Awesome’ By Pablo Tariman Philippine Daily Inquirer MANILA, Philippines--Celebrated Filipino pianist Cecile Licad made a very strong impression on Russian audiences when she made her historic Moscow debut with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra on April 15 under the baton of People’s Artist of Russia Mark Gorenstein. “Maestro Gorenstein has everything I look for in a conductor,” said Licad. “My approach to music simply jibed with his and on top of that, he has a great personality. Our music-making was almost up there on a psychic level. I had to control myself because I was close to tears on the second movement of the Brahms concerto with everyone obsessed with the music as I did. It was an engagement of a lifetime,” Licad said. “This engagement is simply indescribable,” Licad told the Inquirer upon her arrival in New York from Moscow. “The conductor was great, the Tchaikovsky Hall was full with not a single seat vacant, the piano was superb and the Russian audience is one of the most music-obsessed I have encountered in my whole life,” she added. Licad got the thrill of her performing life when she got the traditional rhythmic applause from the Russian audience some of whom went on stage to offer her flowers. “I was simply overwhelmed by the audience reaction,” the renowned Filipino pianist said. First time A lady from the artistic staff of the orchestra commented that Licad’s interpretation demolished the impression that only male pianists can do justice to Brahms. Zara Melikyan, a Russian music lover, told Licad after the concert: “I enjoyed the concert very much. It was awesome! You played excellently and I heard people from the audience say that as well.” Licad said it was also the first time she set foot in the famous Tchaikovsky Hall where the likes of Otto Klemperer, Artur Rubenstein, Yasha Heifetz, Marian Anderson, Artur Honegger, Bela Bartok, David Oystrakh and Emil Gilels have performed earlier. “The Tchaikovsky Hall was simply incomparable when it comes to the sound,” Licad said. “This hall had everything an artist can ask for. The organizers care about you and the musicians not just knew every note of the music but they have a unique way of projecting the sound the best that you can think of. Their music-making is not just about power. They care a lot about the quality of sound. For this reason, this Moscow concert is simply heaven-sent.” Second team-up The April 15 engagement was actually her second team-up with Gorenstein, considered one of the most famous and distinguished conductors in contemporary Russia. Gorenstein’s name is closely associated with traditions of the Russian conductor’s school—brilliant performance, depth and innovativeness of interpretation, filigree technique and strong personality. Licad had three rehearsals with the orchestra and the first encounter with the orchestra stunned her when the conductor asked her, “Do you still remember me?” It turned out conductor Gorenstein also conducted her when she made her Israel debut in Tel Aviv some 20 years ago as soloist in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. “There was some slight mix-up in that Israel engagement,” Licad recalled. “The conductor was informed I was playing Chopin No. 1 but I was ready for Chopin No. 2. Even with that last-minute discovery, that Israel concert turned out very well with the conductor learning the piece only in the first few rehearsals.” Maestro’s credentials Before Licad, Gorenstein had worked with such distinguished soloists as violinist Viktor Tretyakov, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, pianists Nikolai Petrov, Denis Matsuev, Lazar Berman and singers Elena Obraztsova, Roberto Alagnia, Angela Gheorghiu and Kathleen Battle, among others. Of Gorenstein’s credentials, Steve Smith of the New York Times had written: “The best measure of Mr. Gorenstein’s work came in an urgent, imaginatively shaded account of Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. Beginning at a whisper, the cellos rose to a magnificently throaty sound. Woodwinds were ribald, and brasses took on a warm glow. It would be hard to imagine a more phantasmagorical rendition of the closing pages in the Giuoco Delle Coppie, or a more desolate introduction to the Elegia.” Before her Russian debut, Vice President Jejomar Binay had congratulated Licad, saying she remains a big inspiration for Filipino musicians all over the world. Founded in 1936, the Russian State Symphony Orchestra had been led by some of the finest conductors and composers in music history, notably Igor Stravinsky, Konstantin Ivanov, Evgeniy Svetlanov, Otto Klemperer, Erich Kleiber, Yehudi Menuhin, Charles Munch, Mstislav Rostropovich, Kurt Masur and Valery Gergiev, among others. MATABUENA MANILA, Philippines – ABS-CBN’s remake of the 90s classic soap opera “Mara Clara” is set to compete in Canada’s 2011 Banff World Media Festival in June. According to Banff’s official website, “Mara Clara” is one of the two Asian nominees in the Telenovelas & Soap Operas category, pitted against South Korea’s “Bread, Love and Dreams,” popularly known locally as GMA 7’s “Baker King.” Aside from “Bread, Love and Dreams,” “Mara Clara” will be up against the United Kingdom’s “Coronation Street”; and the USA’s “Days of Our Lives,” “Eva Luna” and “The Queen of the South” in the same category. “Mara Clara” was originally aired on ABS-CBN from 1992 until 1997. The original story, created by Emil Cruz, Jr., follows the life of two young ladies, the meek but poor Mara and the rich villain Clara, who were switched at birth. The original starred Judy Ann Santos (Mara) and Gladys Reyes (Clara). In 2010, ABS-CBN announced that a remake of the hit TV series will be aired and will star rookie actresses Kathryn Bernardo as Mara and Julia Montes as Clara. The show is currently airing on ABS-CBN’s primetime block. The Banff World Media Festival, also known as the “Rockies,“ is an "internationally-recognized awards program celebrating the very best in international television and digital media production" and will run from June 12-15. Generally, the festival is divided into three categories: the Fiction Rockies, the Non-Fiction Rockies and the Interactive Rockies. The Telenovelas & Soap Operas category is under the Fiction Rockies, a category that “recognizes the very best in scripted television programming from around the world.” The Fiction Rockies awards ceremony will take place on June 12 at the AOL Canada Theater and will be hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” Canada’s Hollywood correspondent Matte Babel. noli-kun April 22nd, 2011, 04:47 AM Another Pinoy director on his way to Cannes By NEIL RAMOS April 20, 2011, 1:25pm http://mb.com.ph/node/314942/another-pinoy-director-hi http://mb.com.ph/sites/default/files/pap.jpg Alessandra de Rossi in 'Busong,' director Auraeus Solito's (inset) latest masterpiece MANILA, Philippines – Film director Auraeus Solito is the latest Filipino to make it to the Cannes Film Festival. A report on filmbiz.asia April 20 confirmed the entry of Solito’s film “Busong” as one of three Asian films to be screened as part of the Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Realisateurs) section. “Busong” –retitled “Palawan Fate” for the festival—tells the story a crippled woman and her brother and their search for a healer. Central in its motif is the notion of instant karma relating to humans and Mother Nature. “Busong” stars Alessandra de Rossi, Clifford Banagale, Rodrigo Santikan, Bonivie Budao, Vincent Magbanua and Mina Tesorio. It was produced by the director's Solito Arts Productions in association with Cinemalaya. “Busong” will be shown alongside director Vimukthi Jayasundara’s “Mushrooms (Chatrak) a lyrical Bengali-language drama and maverick Japanese director Sono Sion's "Guilty of Romance." With "Busong" Solito follows a long line of Filipino directors whose works were featured in the prestigious festival which includes the likes of Lino Brocka, Mike de Leon, Mario O’Hara, Raya Martin and Brillante “Dante” Mendoza. Solito gained prominence in 2005 when his first feature film “Ang pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros).” was celebrated at Robert Redoford’s Sundance festival. “Ang pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" went on to win 15 international awards including 3 awards at the Berlinale (The Teddy award, International Jury Prize at the Kinderfest and Special Mention from the Children's Jury of the Kinderfest). It is also the first Philippine film nominated for Best Foreign film at the Independents' Spirit Awards in the US. Notoriety followed Solito when another of his film, 2009's “Boy,” was banned from exhibition in 22nd Singapore International Film Festival where it was vying for the Silver Screen Awards. I've just watched the teaser, and all I can say it is a promising film! Reminds me though of another Cinemalay film, J. Tarrog's 'Mangatyanan' because of the theme on ethnic rites and traditional concepts. Nick not only co-wrote the song, but he produced it, too. How cool is that? Unfortunately, the Jonas Brother doesn't sing on it, but once you hear the lyrics to the inspirational track, you'll see how it pertains to him. "This song takes me back to when I was young, and talks about the road I took to arrive where I am today," he said in a press release. Charice posted a lyric video for the song on her YouTube channel on Tuesday, the same day that the song hit iTunes. The 'Glee' star is also getting ready to shoot a video for the song, and has partnered up with Acuvue to launch a very special contest for it. Three lucky grand prize winners will get a trip to Los Angeles and have their photos featured in the video! "Growing up, I dreamed of starring in a music video and through determination and confidence I achieved my goal," Charice says. "I'm excited to be able to give fans a chance to share in my dream and hopefully inspire them to start following their own." Listen to 'One Day' below and find out how you can enter to win a chance to be featured in Charice's video on Cambio.com. pAwKkmIYGLw crappypants April 22nd, 2011, 06:21 AM ^^ that's been posted three times already, back up. diz April 22nd, 2011, 08:50 AM one day might hit the charts pretty well. i like it.. amigo32 April 22nd, 2011, 11:59 AM I like it too:D One day tatalino rin ako. It was showcased at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile during the Milan Design Week earlier this month. According to Manila Bulletin, the Phoenix does not have an engine yet but it has caught the eye of the car industry. Cobonpue's managing partner in the US, Christopher Reiter, told Manila Bulletin that a visitor from Mercedes Benz was "amazed" by the design. Reiter said, "He found the whole concept of a car made of bamboo and rattan so raw and yet so rich in terms of design and sustainability. Two other leading car manufacturers are also interested to pursue a collaborative project with Kenneth." According to Manila Bulletin, Consul General Lourdes Soliman Tabamo lauded Cobonpue's work. In an intimate dinner she hosted in Milan for Cobonpue and his staff, she said, "This is a moment of national pride for all of us." Manila Bulletin quoted Cobonpue as saying, "I am very pleased with the feedback from everyone who came to visit our booth and saw the intricacy of the craftsmanship and the genius of the Filipino design." Inquirer.net likened the Phoenix to a sleek bird posed to take flight. "It has a (vertebra) or spine that runs to the rear where it forms into a splay of rattan bundled with LED (Light Emitting Diode) rods to emit light; that's the tail light. The rear is also the space for the car engine." It took months to design the Phoenix, and 10 days to build it in Cobonpue's factory in Cebu. source: http://ph.news.yahoo.com/kenneth-cobonpues-bamboo-rattan-car-big-hit-milan-021400578.html Narnian_King April 27th, 2011, 03:18 PM http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/228518_1950927486586_1044589784_2269638_4952704_n.jpg rawr April 29th, 2011, 06:24 PM ^^ LOL. A co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) and its long-time executive director, Coronel has been the first and only director of the Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University since 2006. Columbia has long been considered the gold standard in journalism education. University-wide, only five Columbia faculty are given Presidential Teaching Awards every year. "The Presidential Teaching Awards were established in 1996 to recognize Columbia’s best teachers and their roles in the development of students and contribution to overall academic excellence," the Columbia Journalism School said in its announcement. "Thrilled beyond words," Coronel said on her Facebook page in reaction to the award. "I came to the Journalism School from Manila in the fall of 2006," she said on the Columbia Journalism School web site. "I didn't have much teaching experience nor had I lived in the U.S. before. But I was privileged to have fabulous students and a warm, supportive community at the Journalism School. The generosity of Toni Stabile meant our students had the support they needed to do investigative reporting projects. I'm thrilled -- and grateful -- that the university has recognized the work we've done." In its announcement of Coronel's award, the Columbia Journalism School presented the following summary of her journalism career in the Philippines: "Coronel launched her reporting career in the Philippines in 1982 and won renown with her insightful coverage of the human rights abuses that marked the end of the Marcos regime and the democratic movement that led to the election of Corazon Aquino. In 1989, she co-founded the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism to promote investigative reporting and train journalists. Coronel led the PCIJ to become one of the most trusted news sources in the region, with important reporting on poverty, corruption, and political intrigue. A recipient of numerous awards and extensive recognition, Coronel is the author or editor of over a dozen books, and a graduate of the University of the Philippines and the London School of Economics." Coronel received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2003, shortly after the PCIJ's investigative work helped hasten the downfall of President Joseph Estrada. - GMA News NOVO ECIJANO May 1st, 2011, 07:32 AM A major star in the making? Charice could be ‘Saigon’-bound IT’S WHAT Charice Pempengco’s main benefactor Oprah Winfrey might call an “a-ha” moment. Is the 18-year-old Filipina singer being groomed to play lead character Kim in a movie version of the mammoth musical “Miss Saigon”—the same role that won a Larry and a Tony for Lea Salonga? The movie incarnation of “Saigon” is reportedly in the works, to be directed by Lee Daniels, the same filmmaker behind the award-winning “Precious.” Yup, the same Oscar winner that Oprah produced. Connect the dots: Oprah solidly supports the careers of both Charice and Lee. So, would Lee consider casting Charice as Kim? All of Charice’s high-profile projects (her recurring role on the TV series “Glee”; “Here Comes the Boom,” the film starring Salma Hayek; not to mention recording songs written and produced by Bruno Mars and Nick Jonas) seem to be priming her for the big time. The average age of a car is 5-10 years in the industrialized world and the subsequent process of crushing and recycling cars is energy intensive, costly and inefficient. There is no engine yet but there are talks on the possibility of adding an electric motor to power the Phoenix. Though he does not have any immediate plans to commercialize this, Cobonpue considers it as a creative exercise in the right direction. The world’s first bamboo and rattan roadster was built in just 10 days. At 153 inches long, it is a small and elegant solution to a big and ugly problem: the waste created by old cars that outlive their purpose. “This project attempts to unveil the future of green vehicles using woven skins from organic fibers mated to composite materials and powered by green technology,” says Mr. Cobonpue. The Phoenix’s biodegradable skin is designed to last the average length of time a person keeps a car (5 years in industrialized countries, 10-20 years elsewhere) so that the car doesn’t create unnecessary waste by lasting longer than its owner needs it. The skin can be replaced inexpensively if the owner wishes to keep their car longer, and the Phoenix’s frame can be easily customized for individual customers’ needs. Piccio, who is from Bacolod City, was the lone Filipino invited to the royal wedding, having served as a nanny to both Prince William and Prince Harry, and later working for their mother Princess Diana. “I cried at the wedding. It was both a happy and sad occasion for me,” she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a telephone interview. Piccio was happy to see the boy she had cared for turn into a handsome young man and finally get married, but she wept at the thought that his mother, Princess Diana, could not be at his wedding. “The princess would have been so proud of him,” she said. Piccio said she had breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner at Clarence House on the day of the wedding and went home past 8 p.m. on Friday. With the rest of the staff When Prince William and his bride arrived at Clarence House from the Buckingham Palace reception in a dark blue Aston Martin, Piccio, along with the rest of the staff, lined up in the courtyard. She said they were briefed to curtsy when the royals arrived. “When Prince William drove in there was loud applause from everyone and all of a sudden I heard him call out ‘Hi Lillie’ and he came up to hug and kiss me, as if he really missed me,” Piccio said. “I was dumbfounded ... I was not able to say anything.” “He said he was so happy I came to his wedding and asked how I was. He also said he liked my dress,” Lillie said. She wore a dress made by Bacolod designer Lourdes Lipa. She added that Kate, who also kissed her, asked how she knew Prince William. According to Piccio, Prince William told his bride that “She (Piccio) looked after Mummy before.” Stopped to talk “I told her I had been working for the family since William was a baby. She (Kate) was beautiful and sweet,” she said. “Everybody was looking at us because Prince William and Kate stopped to talk to me.” Asked if Kate was like Princess Diana, Piccio said, “Nobody can wear the shoes of Princess Diana. She was one of a kind, she was beautiful, kind and generous. She taught her boys to be humble.” Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, arrived at Clarence House later, she said. “Prince Charles came up to me and asked how I was and asked where I was working, and I told him I was retired,” she said. Piccio added that she was having snacks when someone tapped her on the shoulder. “When I looked up, it was Prince Harry. I tried to get up to curtsy to him but he told me to sit and he kissed me,” she said. A lovely couple Later in the evening, Piccio said she saw Prince William come down dressed in his tuxedo along with his wife who was wearing a white gown to go to another party at Buckingham Palace. “He looked so handsome, and she looked beautiful,” she said. On Saturday, Piccio said she was surprised to get a call from Bernie, the butler at Clarence House. “He told me Prince William told him before he left to make sure to call and thank me for attending his wedding, and that he was so happy that I was there,” she said. IslandSon.PH May 6th, 2011, 04:33 AM Pacquiao joins LeBron as HP endorsers source: Dyan Castillejo | abs-cbnnews.com LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has reportedly sealed 2 new multi-million dollar endorsement contracts with computer giant Hewlett Packard (HP) and another with the biggest produce distributor in North America. Top Rank promotions chief Bob Arum hired marketing specialist Lucia McKelvey to handle Pacquiao's endorsement contracts. McKelvey is well known as having sealed many deals for golfers Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie “He's (Pacquiao) not saturated in terms of brand endorsements, so if you give him a brand endorsement, he's gonna take it and he's gonna really work it with you,” said McKelvey. Michael Koncz confirmed Pacquiao will be alongside Miami Heat star LeBron James as endorser for HP. “It's about exposure. Because Manny's face would be on every box of HP chips around the world,” he said. According to website Campaign Singapore, Pacquiao’s sponsorship deal with HP is estimated to be worth $1 million per year. Pacquiao will also be in the packaging of vegetables to be sold in North America. Under the name “Pacquiao Produce,” an all-natural Pacquiao health drink is also in the works. “So they're really gonna swatch out the packaging and put Manny Pacquiao on the cover of all their boxes, all their bags and everything,” said McKelvey. Pacquiao will get a percentage or royalty for every item sold by the produce company. McKelyey adds this is only the beginning of Pacquiao's many more profitable years as endorser for many top corporations. “My aim is to make him have category specific deals, like an automotive deal, a credit card deal an electronics deal, a cellphone deal. Every deal out there. So he is really growing around with these brands,” she said. Pacquiao is grateful for all the endorsement opportunities given to him. “Galing naman lahat sa Panginoon ‘yan,” said the pound-for-pound champ. In this latest interview, the star said her Filipino mother's fighter spirit helped her play one of the she-warriors in director Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch." It was also her mom's toughness that fired up Vanessa in her career and personal life. "Filipinos are very passionate," said the ever-smiling Vanessa. "You look at Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, wohoo!" she exclaimed, raising both fists in a salute to the boxing champ. "You don't want to mess with him. My mom, too, is extremely passionate. You don't want to piss her off. I really enjoy it because there's a little fighter inside of me. There has to be a fighter inside of you to stay in this business, or you wouldn't get anywhere." Single again Confirming that she's single again after splitting up with long-time boyfriend Zac Efron, Vanessa said: "It's amazing and beautiful and very exciting to step into the unknown. I have all the time for myself. You truly have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. I'm young and still figuring out what I want to do. I have so many interests and amazing friends and family who allow me to feed into my drive and passions and to keep going." We told Vanessa what Zac said when we interviewed him - that he was excited that she got to work with Zack Snyder, who directed "300" and "Watchmen". She replied, "All of Zac's friends would want to see the movie; hopefully he'll see it with them. It appeals to such a wide audience. If you're a guy, there are the awesome action sequences. If you're a woman, it's empowering. It has something for everyone." Asked if she'd consider working with her ex again, Vanessa answered: "You never know - we could." "Sucker Punch" reflects Vanessa's transition from her "High School Musical" days to adult roles. She plays street-smart Blondie in the action fantasy that shows her and four other actresses - Abbie Cornish, Emily Browning, Jamie Chung and Jena Malone - duelling with everything from samurais to serpents. Vanessa is, of course, a lovely brunette who kicks *** in the film. But her character has "blonde moments", thus the name. "This project really freed me and allowed me to grow as an actress," Vanessa said. "Some of the brothel scenes were emotionally draining, but the creative environment that Zack Snyder crafted for us allowed us to play and trust in each other (enough to) try anything we wanted. When you try different things, beautiful things come from the spontaneity." Vanessa and her costars' physical preparation for the action scenes included training with a former Navy SEAL and the team that coached the "300" actors. "I did become a fitness freak from doing this movie," she said. "It's amazing when you're lifting weights twice your size. To know that you can do that gives you confidence not only physically but also mentally." Vanessa's family - dad Greg Hudgens, mom Gina Guangco and sister Stella - is also a constant support group. "They keep me grounded," said Vanessa, who started performing in musical theater at age 8. "I adore my family." Adorable mom Told that some of her costars revealed that they adored Gina, too, Vanessa beamed and replied: "My mom is the woman I aspire to be. She is the most genuinely sweet, warm-hearted person. She has such a happy nature. She makes friends with everybody. I try to pick up things from her. I definitely try to bring her along whenever I can." The 22-year-old lives in a house that she bought in 2008. "I'm completely domesticated and I love it," she happily reported. "I live by myself. I clean my house and cook my own food. Grocery shopping is one of my favourite pastimes. I love being able to take care of myself." She added, laughing: "Of course, it's always nice when my mom comes over and helps me with my laundry every now and then. Laundry is my least favourite thing to do." On what qualities she looks for in a man, possibly the next Zac Efron in her life, Vanessa said: "Loyalty, of course, is No. 1. I'm also very much into people who can make the best out of situations and who live in the moment the best they can." Excessive attention A paparazzi favourite, Vanessa commented on the amount of media coverage she's been getting: "It's nice that people want to know more about me. I feel, though, that at times it could be excessive. I look to a bunch of older movie actresses and I really don't know much about their personal lives. I look at their body of work and I respect them for that. I'm hoping that one day, I'll have that status. But this is a new era. It's a matter of finding a balance, of putting your full attention into your work and trying to put your best foot forward. And not paying too much attention to others." She tries "not to focus on the negative. I always try to move forward with the positive." One of those positive elements in her life is her involvement with Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to kids who have life-threatening medical conditions. "It's sweet to hang out with the kids. I try to bring them to my premieres and do what I can to help them." She has another new film, "Beastly" - a contemporary version of the "Beauty and the Beast" tale - with Alex Pettyfer, Mary-Kate Olsen and Neil Patrick Harris. "It's a little bit edgier and sexier with no fur," she explained. "We wanted to put a new realism to it. I don't think the film would be realistic if there was a big furry guy. I feel that my character has a lot to do with myself, being able to look past exteriors and see people for who they truly are. That's a message that I really want to get out to teenagers, because for some in high school, everything seems to be about who you hang out with and what you're wearing. It's all the exterior things." Coming up later this year is the action-adventure "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," in which she stars with Michael Caine. "He was just a joy to work with," she said of the veteran actor. "He speaks his mind. He's surprisingly hip, too. He was telling me about a keyboard for my iPad, and once I heard him singing 'Firework' by Katy Perry." We teased Vanessa that every time we see each other, we ask if she has made her first trip to the Philippines yet. She has not. It's her dream to visit with her mom, who has not returned to the country for many years. "I know!" she said with a smile. "I need to set a date, write it on my calendar and just do it." icarusrising May 11th, 2011, 05:14 AM Justin Bieber concert features Pinoy talents (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/05/10/11/justin-bieber-concert-features-pinoy-talents) by Reyma Buan-Deveza, abs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 05/10/2011 4:28 PM | Updated as of 05/11/2011 9:06 AM MANILA, Philippines - International superstar Justin Bieber will showcase Filipino talent in his concert Tuesday night in Manila. The Bieber concert will feature as its front act the all-male dance crew Poreotics, the champions of the 5th season of America's Best Dance Crew, whose 3 members are Filipinos. Aside from Poreotics, Bieber will also feature the Filipino-American R&B band Legaci, who joined him in his entire "My World" tour. Meanwhile, the Canadian sensation will receive a guitar-shaped plaque from MCA Music Philippines for selling 105,000 units of his 5 CDs in the country, reaching the 7-time platinum mark. His platinum-selling albums include Never Say Never (single), My World, My World 2.0, My Worlds and My Worlds: The Collection. Bieber arrived in Manila on Tuesday for a concert tonight at the SM Mall of Asia concert grounds. He was scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. It was, however, delayed for hours after his entourage had problems retrieving their baggage at the airport. At least 40 media practitioners attended the press conference. His bodyguard, Kenny Hamilton, apologized to the media for the delay. Collaboration with Charice During the presscon, Bieber said he is keen on collaborating with international singing sensation Charice. The young Canadian singer said Charice “is really nice and sweet” and collaborating with her is possible. Bieber mentioned that she met Charice on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” He, however, ruled out any possibility of creating music with boxing champion Manny Pacquiao. Bieber said he will “go to the ring with Manny Pacquiao” but not make music with him. Aside from Charice, he would also like to collaborate with Kanye West, Drake and Rascal Flatts. Beautiful women The young singer also observed that the Philippines has a "lot of of beautiful women." When asked if he has dated a Filipina, he said he "talked to a Filipina girl" once. He described her as "half Filipina, half Mexican." He said he is open to the possibility of dating a Filipina in the future. Bieber was once linked to Filipina singer Jasmine Villegas, who played his love interest in the music video for his single "Baby." His current girlfriend is Selena Gomez. kiretoce May 12th, 2011, 03:44 AM I heard this on NPR (National Public Radio) this morning; Mayweather would not get into the ring against Pacquiao unless he's guaranteed a payday of $100 million. DoST Merit Scholar Miguel Arnold Reyes, a graduate of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Main Campus, took home $1,500 and will have an asteroid to be named after him as an award from the Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the 2011 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Los Angeles, California. While Angeli Joyce Dy of Capiz National High School also won fourth place and took home a $500 prize. Reyes’ research outshined other researches with his “Synthesis and Characterization of Composite Plastics from Thermoplastic Starch and Nano-sized Calcium Phosphate for Film Packaging,” which seeks to produce biodegradable plastic for film packaging from a composite of thermoplastics from cornstarch and nano-sized phosphate particles. Dy’s research titled “Milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal) Serum as an Alternative Media Supplement for Culture of A549 (Human Lung) and HCT 116 (Colon) Carcinomas. Her research showed that milkfish serum is rich in mannose-binding proteins and albumin that are potential replacements of expensive fetal bovine serum (FBS) being used as culture of the lung and colon cancer cells. Meanwhile, Dr. Leticia V. Catris, officer-in-charge of the Science Education Institute-DoST, showed great appreciation for Reyes’ achievement. “Reyes is a welcome addition to the growing roster of future scientists and engineers in the country, which will take the Philippines to greater heights. We are optimistic that Reyes will even outshine the asteroid named after him as he pursues a science career,” she said. Reyes is expected to pursue a computer engineering course at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Reyes will be joining the ranks of Filipinos who got an asteroid named after them. They include: former Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration Administrator Dr. Roman L. Kintanar; Edwin Aguirre; Imelda Joson; PSHS Western Visayas Campus Director Josette Biyo; Allan Noriel Estrella; Jeric Valles Macalintal; Prem Villas Fortran Rara; and Father Victor Badillo. The ISEF is an annual science competition organized by the Society for Science and the Public that provides a venue for high school students all over the world to showcase their independent research materials. . rawr May 17th, 2011, 03:06 PM “Synthesis and Characterization of Composite Plastics from Thermoplastic Starch and Nano-sized Calcium Phosphate for Film Packaging” damn you just gotta love those research titles!!! xxxriainxxx May 17th, 2011, 05:27 PM Not sure where to put it but here goes: Philippines ranks number 9 in the most patriotic countries list. (http://www.forbes.com/2008/07/02/world-national-pride-oped-cx_sp_0701patriot_print.html) Commentary World's Most And Least Patriotic Countries Sara Pardys 07.02.08, 12:30 PM ET If the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center (NORC) conducted its survey on national pride this year, would the United States still rank No. 1? In 2003, when the survey was last administered, more Americans said they were proud of their homeland than any other country's citizens. But considering President Bush's plummeting approval ratings and U.S. participation in an increasingly unpopular war, the world's most patriotic country may be in danger of losing its title. The NORC examines two factors: how proud respondents said they were to live in their respective countries, and whether they considered their own countries superior or inferior relative to other countries. For one part of the survey, respondents had to indicate whether they agreed or disagreed with five statements, for example: "I would rather be a citizen of my country than any other country in the world" and "There are some things about my country today that make me ashamed." Novelty seems to enhance feelings of national pride, according to survey director Tom Smith. Many of the most patriotic countries in the world--like Israel, South Africa and the Philippines--are relatively new nations. Moreover, several of these countries were formed after winning independence from colonial powers or other occupying forces. "These countries were formed through an act of political will," Smith says, which, in turn, heightens their citizens' loyalty. Australia, a nation-state that gained independence from Great Britain in 1901, follows the United States in the most-patriotic rankings, with Austria, which dates back to the ninth century but took its current shape at the end of World War II, close behind. The least patriotic country, according to the survey, is East Germany. Although that Soviet-occupied sovereignty hasn't existed since Germany was reunified in 1990, NORC conducted its first survey in 1985. To maintain consistency, Smith says, the survey is still administered among the same regions. Even recently, residents of East Germany and West Germany respond differently to questions concerning patriotism. The latter region, which was under Allied control during the Cold War, reports more national pride than its counterparts to the east, who experienced Communist rule. Behind East Germany are other nations formerly ruled by the Soviet Union, such as Latvia and Slovakia, and nations like West Germany and Norway, which were formed long ago and thus do not have a recent "creation myth" that inspires fervent pride. War, though, critically influences a country's reported patriotism. Citizens feel it is their duty to support their nation while it is embroiled in international conflict, according to Scott Althaus, an associate professor of speech communication and political science at the University of Illinois. This assumption may explain the overnight spike in Bush's approval ratings after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. But such wartime pride is only temporary, according to Matthew Baum, a visiting associate professor of public policy at Harvard. Bush's initially high approval ratings dropped as the years passed and the fatalities in Iraq mounted. If citizens do not see positive results, Baum says, a backlash in patriotism occurs. The desire to rally around the flag, then, doesn't last long. So America's patriotism is likely waning with each passing day. Public displays of patriotism are as diverse as the nations that inspire them. There are serious manifestations, of course, such as when American families congregate to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July or Israeli soldiers gather in silence to mourn fallen comrades. But there are joyfully spirited demonstrations, too; face-painted soccer fans bellowed cheers for Spain (ranked 16th out of 32 countries in the NORC survey) to win the World Cup. In the presence or absence of war, whether a nation is 50 or 500 years old, citizens of every country show pride in ways only they can truly understand. (Yes, James and Sam remember Cesar very well. When I interviewed them separately, James in Tokyo for SpiderMan 3 in 2007 and Sam in Sydney for Avatar in 2009, they asked me to extend their “best regards” to Cesar; with Sam good-humoredly commenting, “I wanted to play the role [in The Great Raid] that Cesar played.”) There hasn’t been any follow-up to The Great Raid but “something big” is in store for Cesar that could finally lead to the fulfillment of his rudely-interrupted Hollywood dream. I uncovered it by chance when immigration lawyer Jemela Nettles and Tim Evans (of the US Immigration) brought me to this seaside paradise which happens to be the residence of the rich and famous (among them Barbra Streisand and her husband James Brolin who played Daria Ramirez’s husband in Legacy, the movie which Star Cinema co-produced with a Hollywood outfit). When Cesar, who was with his wife Sunshine Cruz and their daughter Angelina, told us “to drop by,” I didn’t know that he was meeting with Marty Katz who owns an independent company. It was Katz who produced The Great Raid. He was also the supervising producer of Titanic. His other recent productions include Reindeer Games (directed by John Frankenheimer, starring Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron) and The Four Feathers. We politely said no to Cesar’s invitation for Tim, Jemela and me to join him, Katz and Sunshine at their table at an Italian resto (so they could discuss important matters “in private”) and we settled at an outdoor table, leisurely taking bites of our sandwiches and downing them with sugar-free sodas while watching beautiful people go by, so many of them that I told Tim and Jemela in jest, “Mukhang walang pangit dito, a.” After Katz left, Cesar and Sunshine treated us to scoops of ice-cream at a nearby kiosk and that’s where Cesar let us in on what he and Katz talked about. Cesar revealed only “a part” of his and Katz’s plans that include Cesar initially directing a Hollywood indie titled Getting To America which is written by Donald Martin (one of this current projects is Henry Matesse with Al Pacino in the title role). Martin wrote a story about a Filipino migrating to America. “Donald wants me to direct it,” said Cesar. “We’re thinking of Michael Madsen to play the lead, with a young Filipino actor as co-star. I will play a cameo as the adviser to Madsen’s character. We plan to shoot it in Manila, with me also as line-producer.” Then Martin will co-write a story with Cesar. “What I have in mind is Sacada, my dream project, which is about the early Filipino settlers in Hawaii, working as pineapple and sugarcane planters. It’s a true story set in the ‘20s and it touches on a labor dispute that leads to a massacre which became known as the Hanapepe Massacre. Four American cops died in that massacre, along with 24 Filipino workers. It’s a sensational story.” Cesar won’t reveal what the third project is. “Confidential,” he said. PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER THE PASTRY Alliance of the Philippines impressed an international panel of judges by setting a record of wins with five Golds, two Bronzes and a team Silver at the recently concluded Hong Kong International Culinary Classic. Held May 11-14 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in conjunction with Hofex, the HKICC was a multi-skill event participated in by delegations from over 12 countries. Benjie Lanas of Cebu carved “Joker,” a colorful jester, out of white chocolate and bagged PAP’s first Gold. Rizalino Manas’ Bronze-winning “Linger” was a collage of geckos, butterflies and birds-of-paradise pulled out of sugar. Batangas native Bryan Dimayuga executed an all-white wedding cake entitled “Ivory” that scored very high in technical skill, eventually capturing a Gold. The only two gold medals in the Under 25 Plated Desserts Category both went to PAP: for Clyden San Pedro’s visual feast of passion fruit-coconut-mango “Metamorphosis” and chocolate-rose-hazelnut “Kaleidoscope”; and Michael Aspiras’ refreshing layers of “Corn Field” and “Lemon Garden,” which were just three points shy of distinction. A winning entry by the Pastry Alliance of the Philippines at the recently concluded Hong Kong International Culinary Classic held May 11-14 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. INQUIRER Nikki Misa’s focused live execution of her “Passionfruit” in Earl Grey Mousse won her a Gold in the Chocolate Fragrant Tea Cake category. Likewise, Gen Oliva prepared two desserts live based on the secret ingredient guava for “Fantasy Table,” adding another Bronze to the PAP harvest. The main pastry event that was Live Bakery required Bubbles Cruz-Lerias, Maricar Salvador and Roel Vargas to prepare 15 different types and shapes of bread, plus a bread showpiece within nine hours. Their ingenious and delicious Ensaymada con Prosciutto, Back to The (Ube) Roots, Duck in a Box and Pili Citrus Twist won the team Silver. Aerin May 20th, 2011, 07:05 PM It's a good start. :D It motivates us to go to the gym everyday, makes us want to improve ourselves in more ways than one. Inspires us to dress well, eat healthy, take care of our property & territory (house & neighbourhood), the list goes on... and once the middle class regain control of the country again, it can translate to the national level as well. It can only be seen and tangible once the middle class steps forward on centre stage again... For now the Oligarchy & their peasant puppets are the stars of the show. :D :D :D Now how do we decimate the numbers of those plebeians, proles and peasants? To emasculate the powerbase of both oligarchy & the left ... can hardly wait... At isa pa, ganyan talaga tayong mga matatangos ang aquiline nose, mahirap magnosebleed. I hope this doesn't come across as clichéd or insincere but I think I would rather have people focus less on their appearances and more on efforts to improve the world...less on material things and more on helping their fellow men and being useful members of society. Though I'm no Peñaflorida (not by a long shot), still, I do my part to show the world that Filipinos are forces of good too, despite the negative portrayals in the media. And this brings me nicely to the other discussion: mas OT ata yung nakapunta sa HQ ng Apple :D Well, if some people can mention their ownership of an ipad whenever the opportunity arises (no matter how irrelevant), surely I'm allowed to have this one eensy-weensy tiny little bit of digression? Anyway, I'll just point out that I was there to do some volunteer work for 2 separate events with worthwhile causes (the companies kindly allowed their facilities to be used--ok I'll give Apple props for this one). In retrospect, I'm very glad to have participated, since there were very few Filipinos that attended, and I might have been the only Filipino volunteer there at both events. So, I guess I wasn't too off-topic after all. :) Mercato May 20th, 2011, 07:59 PM I don't see anything bad about patriotism. That's good actually. HICAP Source: Manila Bulletin, May 23, 2011, 6:35pm MANILA, Philippines — Two of the country’s top teen mathematicians won the first and second prizes in the recent international Sudoku tournament in Beijing, China. Sarah Jane Cua, 16, and Timothy James Tan, 14, the country’s reigning Sudoku grandmaster, won the first and second prizes, respectively, in the age 18 and under category of the Kejia Pengcheng Cup Beijing International Sudoku Tournament 2011 held in Beijing from May 19 to22. For their feat, Cua won US$500 and a trophy while Tan received US$400 and a certificate. Third place was Luo Tianyi from China, who received US$300 and a certificate. Cua is an incoming Management Engineering freshman at Ateneo de Manila University while Tan is an incoming third year high school student at Trinity Christian School in Bacolod City. The Philippine team to the Beijing tournament was headed by Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild Philippines (MTG), which trained Cua and Tan. The team arrives Tuesday from China. Besides Cua and Tan, the other Filipino contestant was Kaye Janelle Yao. “We’re very proud of Sarah Jane and Timothy,” said Dr. Chua. In October last year, Cua won as grand champion in the Brand’s Asia Pacific Sudoku Challenge 2010 held in Singapore. Tan was among the Top 15 finalists. Cua also won the same title in 2008. Cua placed second in the 3rd Brand’s Sudoku Thailand International Open Princess Somsawali Cup held in Bangkok in 2009. Cua was the grand champion in 2009 and 2010 in the Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge, an annual contest by SM Supermalls and MTG. Tan, on the other hand, was declared grand champion in the Sudoku Grandmaster category in the 5th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge held last January. Louie, a Bachelor of Arts graduate of the University of Santo Tomas in Commercial Arts, revealed when we talked to him at the DreamWorks Studio in Glendale that he never planned to be an animator. “When I arrived in the US, I studied to be a computer programmer,” he said. “I really did not plan to be in animation but since my two brothers were both doing well in their animation careers, I got so inspired to follow their paths. I tried it again and I discovered the fun of drawing. I also discovered that you could really make a career out of it. My older brothers Ronnie (who is working at Pixar) and Ricky (who is working at Fox) helped me and gave me tips in drawing again since I have not drawn for a while. Luckily, I got a job as an animator in 1995 and I have been working as one ever since.” The 44-year-old animator, who was born and raised in Cavite, is the youngest of the three talented brothers. “There is no competition among us,” he explained when we asked him if the siblings were competitive with each other. “We just so happen to share the same interests. We like the same movies, the same cartoons and we all love to draw. Ronnie, who is our eldest, was the first to start drawing. Then we just got inspired by him.” The talented artist-brothers, according to Louie, did not get their artistic talents from their parents. “My mom, Lilia Gonzales del Carmen, was a singer in the 1950s while my late father Rogelio was not an artist,” Louie disclosed. “I really don’t know where it came from. We just discovered that we all loved to draw. But I think my parents cultivated it while we were growing up since they allowed us to draw when we were young. It became a quiet house anyway when all three of us were drawing. They thought, if we were drawing, then we were out of trouble.” Born Manuel Luis Gonzales del Carmen, Louie disclosed that being an immigrant posed no challenges entering the animation industry in the US. “Luckily, there are really no challenges for an immigrant to be an animator,” he said. “It is based on talent. If you are really good, you pay your dues, you work hard and it shows. There is a very good evaluation of talent here. The challenge is only how far you want to go and how hard you want to work. But you could succeed.” As an animator in DreamWorks for “Kung Fu Panda 2,” Louie revealed that he also worked three and a half years ago on the first “Kung Fu Panda.” “I worked on the first one close to the end of the making of the movie and I also worked on the DVD specials so I am very comfortable with the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ characters,” he said. As an animator in the second offering of the hit Jack Black-Angelina Jolie movie, Louie enjoyed working with the superstars. “They are just normal people,” he said. “You feel a lot of pride, though, to be working with the likes of Jack Black and Angelina Jolie. Sometimes, I pinch myself when I realize that this is the real Jack Black and Angelina Jolie that I am working with. What I enjoy most working with them is when they improvise and we learn a lot from their improvisations. We add those touches into our characterizations.” Louie, who also worked on “Megamind” last year, is working currently on a new project for 2012 entitled “Rise of the Guardians.” The film is about a group of heroes from various childhood stories – Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), Jack Frost (Chris Pine) and Boogeyman (Jude Law). The boyish-looking animator revealed that he enjoyed working with “Kung Fu Panda 2” director, Jennifer Yu Nelson who makes her directorial debut with the said film. “She is so talented,” he said. “She knows what she wants. She is very generous and kind. I wouldn’t say it was a vacation to work in this film but it was really so much fun working with her. She can really relate to the artist.” Married and based in Los Angeles, Louie hasn’t been back to the Philippines since he left. “I got busy with work and kids but since our children are getting older now, we plan to make a trip to the Philippines soon,” he said. Louie said his 12-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter are both interested in the arts, “but I think my girl is really more serious about drawing.” As for his advice to upcoming Filipino artists who want to make it in the animation industry just like him and his brothers, Louie said, “Just work hard if you want to study animation. Try to study all aspects of animation. Draw. It doesn’t happen overnight. Just like anything, you have to work hard. It’s just like what champion boxer Manny Pacquiao said, ‘If you train hard, the fight is easy.’ So if you keep on drawing, you get better and you will soon be recognized for your talent and ability.” As for Angelina, she is happy that her Tigress character has shown her soft side in this second offering. “Although Tigress has an attitude with her friend Po, she has reluctantly become softer,” she said. “Po finds out that he is adopted and my character was raised in an orphanage. So she becomes softer, more understanding. She hugged the panda and I like that part.” She added that her kids have seen the movie and they love it. “My children whose ages range from two to nine, have seen it and they laughed out loud and loved it. They got the family themes of it. This movie actually has some of the more complex themes I have worked in. But I also told Jeffrey Katzenberg (CEO of DreamWorks Animation) that since my kids are in the target age range of the movie and they loved it, we were good. My family was the test audience and it worked!” OtAkAw May 24th, 2011, 11:41 AM ^^Another Pinoy doing well in the animation department. Hizon (The Philippine Star (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=688715)) (Speech delivered during Toastmaster International’s District 75 Annual Conference in Manila) Manila, Philippines - Every single day for the past 10 years on BBC World News, over 350 million people from all over the world wake up to the sound of my voice. What I say can make or break their business. How I say it, however, will affect how they will react whether to stay calm or panic. Delivery is key. Apart from having complete, accurate, and relevant information, the news must be read clearly to ensure that it is easily understood. And for that, I am grateful for my education from the Philippines. Tubong Maynila po ako! I was born, raised and educated here in Manila. Hindi po ako nag-aral sa Amerika o sa UK. Hindi po ako nag Cambridge o Harvard. I learned to speak well and clearly thanks to the patience of my parents, siblings, and my teachers at La Salle Green Hills and De La Salle University. My looks and my diction often leave people wondering about my nationality. On many occasions, I’ve been asked if I’m a western-educated Chinese, Singaporean, Malaysian, or even Indonesian. They wonder because of my eyes, skin color, and the way I speak English. I guess you can say it’s Pinoy super power. We have the gift of languages. But what sets us apart is how, with any language we use, we are able to speak it clearly. Pan-asian diction The Filipino diction is clear, simple, neutral, easy to understand. The Filipino enunciates clearly, pronounces every syllable in a pleasant, even, and non-threatening tone modulated for every ear to capture its essence. And when we speak English, for instance, it is neither American nor British English. It is a Pan-Asian diction. It does not pretend to sound western but both Asians and non-Asians can easily comprehend what is being said. There are a variety of accents speaking the English language and there is no need for the Filipino to imitate the American, British or whatever accent just to say it’s proper English. We have our very own, and that is what makes us a cut above the rest. And that’s why I am where I am. It’s because of the Filipino English diction. People often mistake the American accent for good diction. And yet, there is no real American accent because there is the Southern drawl, the Texas twang, and a host of so many others. It is too difficult to keep track… But that’s beside the point. Someone pointed out, we are Filipinos. We don’t have to speak good English. But don’t you think it’s amazing that we do, despite the fact that we’re not? Education During my time, English was the medium of instruction. When I graduated from grade school in 1980, high school in 1984 and university in 1988, a majority of students could carry on a very decent English conversation, because during my generation we had very good teachers who encouraged us to speak the language fluently. We either spoke in English or we spoke in Tagalog. Mixing them up into Taglish was unacceptable. Even earlier, during my parents’ and grandparents’ time, the country had citizens that were very good in English regardless of their educational attainment because English was widely and strictly used. But today when I look around me and speak with the youth, I think we are a dwindling race. English as a second language of Filipinos is fast deteriorating. In fact, it has become a third language after Filipino and the more widely spoken Taglish. Not many can speak at least two or three sentences of straight English. Worse, the diction is twisted to favor a twang often taken as a sign of being sosyal or wealthy. And believe me, nothing could be further from the truth. Media The media has played a major role in the inability of many Filipinos to speak English well. TV programs these days are all in Taglish. Even the news is no exception. What do we do? How do we stop the spread of “Here na me, where na you?” and “Yes, op kors, dats rayt?” And it also does not help that, when people text or SMS, the language and the writing is inappropriate, either in the so-called jejemon or initialism. And thus their inability to learn correct spelling, impacting their ability to communicate clearly and correctly whether it be in English or Tagalog. The key lies in recognizing that proficiency in communicating in English is indispensable. Speaking in English is not unpatriotic. We are not less Filipino for mastering another language. We are only making good use of our gift for languages to forge ahead. English should be the medium of instruction in schools. Spoken in the presence of trained teachers, children will learn to speak fluently and clearly, because when we master one language, whether it be English or Tagalog, we prepare our youth to challenge themselves to stretch and excel in their language skills, and basically, set the foundation from an educational perspective. There should be more English television programs such as documentaries and talk shows on commercial/terrestrial television with at least one dedicated English newscast. Such shows these days are all on cable channels and are beyond the reach of the less privileged. It is also equally important that we Filipinos read English text more often. Doing so further improves the grasp of the language. Nowadays fewer Filipinos read and enrich their minds through books, editorials or websites. And because of this, poor reading skills translate into poor writing and poor diction. Indeed, sometimes the answer truly lies in reading between the lines, as well as from cover to cover. Globalization In this age of globalization, it is inevitable that the Filipino will interact with peers and colleagues in the international community. We can rightfully expect to hear even more accents, even more variations of the English language. As such, this should spur our youth to even greater heights, to cement our place in the international scene as the most skilled in communicating in the English language. You have to hand it to the Pinoy, we are still the best English speakers on this side of the planet. So, I believe it is time to stand up, stand out, speak proudly as a Filipino and be heard across the globe loud and clear. I know I did! Spoelstra will be the first Pinoy and first Asian coach in the NBA Finals. It wasn't a walk in the park for the Heat. The Bulls were in control for the most part of the game. The Heat caught up in the 3rd quarter but the Bulls were still ahead by 5 points, 62-57, at the start of the 4th quarter. The Bulls brought this up to 12, 77-65, in the last 3 minutes of the game. But with strong defense and the 3-point shooting of LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, the Heat racked up 18 points, against only 3 for the Bulls, to take the series in Chicago's home court. Spoelstra said he is proud of what his players showed during the game. "We had to go through a lot of adversity together... the majority of the game was not going our way but this team has put up a lot of resiliency and toughness and to be able to still hang in there," he said. "Our best players made the best plays," Spoelstra added. The NBA Finals between the Heat and the Mavericks will start on Wednesday. The game will be shown live at 9 a.m. over ABS-CBN Channel 2. -- Report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News pulsephaze22 May 28th, 2011, 03:04 PM Penguin publishes Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo Posted on May 28th, 2011 under Art & Living Achievements 0 El Filibusterismo In celebration of Jose Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary, and Penguin Classics’ 65th anniversary, Penguin, the world’s leading publisher of literary classics, is proud to add to its list, El Filibusterismo, the stunning continuation of the great revolutionary epic of the Philippines—in a new translation by the Executive Director of the National Book Foundation, Harold Augenbraum. Penguin Classics first published Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere in 2006, also translated by Harold Augenbraum, as the first Filipino novel included in Penguin Classics. This acclaim, over 100 years after Rizal’s death, proves that the Filipino novel is a literary great and is as important to the world as other classics such as Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. (In 2008, Jose Garcia Villa’s collection of poems, Doveglion, was also published by Penguin Classics.) “As we launch our summer in our 65th anniversary year, it is with great pride as a Filipino American that I share a new Penguin Classics edition of Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo. Jose Rizal’s words sparked the Philippine revolution, and his legacy helped to shape what the Philippines is today. In a world where readers are inspired to action by words, from books to text messages, we strive to enrich, engage and educate each other with a shared global bookshelf of the world’s great classics. Discover or return to Rizal, bring him into your classroom or book group, add him to your must-read list this summer,” advises Elda Rotor the Editorial Director of Penguin Classics, who was instrumental in the publication of Rizal among the other literary giants of the world in the roster of Penguin Classics. Noli Me Tangere Picking up the story of Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) thirteen years later, the sequel EL FILIBUSTERISMO (Penguin Classics Original / ISBN: 978-0-143-10639-5 / 368 pages / $17.00), presents a gripping tale of obsession and revenge. Gone are the Noli’s themes of innocent love, its hero, Ibarra, a man of great integrity and vision, replaced by the mysterious jeweler Simoun and a venal—and reprehensible—cast of characters. The result of Rizal’s growth as writer and influenced by his exposure to international events, El Filibusterismo is a riveting and suspenseful account of Filipino resistance to colonial rule that still resonates today. Fellow Penguin author and Filipino American novelist Jessica Hagedorn said, “Augenbraum has done a masterful job translating El Filibusterismo and provides another elegant, well-researched and thoughtful introduction. Though the Noli remains the better-known of the two, this powerful sequel shows us a more complicated, tough-minded Rizal and deserves a wider readership.” The Philippine Consulate General in New York, as well as CORE, a group of Filipino American professionals in New York, will launch the book to the Filipino American community at the Philippine Center on Fifth Avenue on the evening of June 16, 2011. They will stay in the city-state for 4 months. “I grabbed this opportunity kasi matagal ko na talagang gustong gumawa ng musical,” Karylle said. “The Kitchen Musical” is the very first Asian musical series that is about the culinary arts. The “ASAP Rocks” mainstays will temporarily leave the ABS-CBN Sunday variety show to give way to their musical series. Karylle will also take a leave from her morning program “Showtime.” In the past, Karylle has done a number of musical plays including “Little Mermaid,” “Seussical” and “Light in the Piazza.” Bautista, on the other hand, had “West Side Story” where he worked Karylle. – Report from Gretchen Fullido, ABS-CBN News crappypants May 30th, 2011, 02:24 AM Christian's face is the kind these SE asian countries like. afterlife00 May 30th, 2011, 11:27 AM Looks like a ripoff of High School Musical 2, when the Wildcats (the cast) were working as kitchen staff for a resort as their summer jobs. :| ^^ I really don't like this word. icarusrising May 30th, 2011, 11:55 AM ^^ I believe the real inspiration (if they're not one and the same) is this one... The Kitchen Musical (2000) (http://www.arnoldwesker.com/synopses/kitchenmusical.htm) SYNOPSIS The Kitchen is the author's first play. It has been performed in over 50 major cities around the world. In 1988 Koichi Kimura, who had directed the play six times in Japan, gave the author £30,000 to seed the project. It took twelve years to put together and was finally directed by Kimura with his company, Chijinkai, in the summer of 2000. Book by Wesker, lyrics by Nigel Forde, score composed by Derek Barnes based on ideas sketched by Barrington Pheloung. The unique aspect of this musical is that the book calls for music and dance from beginning to end.
