The study suggests that Pessimists are in fact in contradiction to the natural evolution of the human brain towards Optimism. In other words, the scientific evidence is mounting that Pessimists tend to be abnormal & they are still left behind in the caves ...

Very interesting article from Time Mag. You gotta read thoroughly coz it has broad implications on daily living.

The Optimism Bias

Without optimism, our ancestors might never have ventured far from their tribes and we might all be cave dwellers, still huddled together and dreaming of light and heat.

To make progress, we need to be able to imagine alternative realities — better ones — and we need to believe that we can achieve them. Such faith helps motivate us to pursue our goals. Optimists in general work longer hours and tend to earn more. Economists at Duke University found that optimists even save more. And although they are not less likely to divorce, they are more likely to remarry — an act that is, as Samuel Johnson wrote, the triumph of hope over experience. (See if the global "happiness" index will ever beat out the GDP.)

Even if that better future is often an illusion, optimism has clear benefits in the present. Hope keeps our minds at ease, lowers stress and improves physical health. Researchers studying heart-disease patients found that optimists were more likely than nonoptimistic patients to take vitamins, eat low-fat diets and exercise, thereby reducing their overall coronary risk. A study of cancer patients revealed that pessimistic patients under the age of 60 were more likely to die within eight months than nonpessimistic patients of the same initial health, status and age.

In fact, a growing body of scientific evidence points to the conclusion that optimism may be hardwired by evolution into the human brain. The science of optimism, once scorned as an intellectually suspect province of pep rallies and smiley faces, is opening a new window on the workings of human consciousness. What it shows could fuel a revolution in psychology, as the field comes to grips with accumulating evidence that our brains aren't just stamped by the past. They are constantly being shaped by the future.

The Optimism Bias

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2074067-3,00.html

This matched the enhanced activity we observed in two critical regions of the brain: the amygdala, a small structure deep in the brain that is central to the processing of emotion, and the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC), an area of the frontal cortex that modulates emotion and motivation. The rACC acts like a traffic conductor, enhancing the flow of positive emotions and associations. The more optimistic a person was, the higher the activity in these regions was while imagining positive future events (relative to negative ones) and the stronger the connectivity between the two structures.
(See "Do We need $75,000 a Year to Be Happy?")

The findings were particularly fascinating because these precise regions — the amygdala and the rACC — show abnormal activity in depressed individuals. While healthy people expect the future to be slightly better than it ends up being, people with severe depression tend to be pessimistically biased: they expect things to be worse than they end up being. People with mild depression are relatively accurate when predicting future events. They see the world as it is. In other words, in the absence of a neural mechanism that generates unrealistic optimism, it is possible all humans would be mildly depressed.

Can Optimism Change Reality?
The problem with pessimistic expectations, such as those of the clinically depressed, is that they have the power to alter the future; negative expectations shape outcomes in a negative way. How do expectations change reality?

See how negative thinking affects your health.

Jpop is okay at least may originality...Japanese ang composers...Kpop. Hello no. Feminized Western boybands AND THEY BUY SONGS FROM HOLLYWOOD.

I forgot the name of the Korean girl group but they have a song that was sung in demo by Ke$ha. Ang Super Junior's "sorry sorry" was composed by an American. it wasn't meant for a Korean group but Kpoplandia got interested and BOUGHT it.

^^ Yup, I like JPop more than KPop because of their extreme originality. Madalang lang talaga mga Hapon mag-revive ng kanta, and they're more eclectic when it comes to music tastes.

They didn't become the 2nd biggest music market in the world for nothing.

The trouble with the hypocritical Establishment is that they pretend to be interested in pre Hispanic Philippines but only on a SELECTIVE BASIS, only one that will enhance their own prestige and grip on power at the expense of Historical Accuracy.

We have been witness to many specialists in that field of history and archaeology who DENY the existence of Sri Vijayan influence as mythical. I dare say they are wrong and ideologically motivated.

We have a name and my ancestors carried that name and it is not of mythological origins. Thanks to the Ayala Museum, that gold which is probably the richest of its kind in the Philippines will shame the Establishment into admitting the influence of India and the Srivijaya which was then at the zenith of its power. The gold had been estimated to be from the 10th to the 13th century, exactly the time when Sri Vijaya existed and flourished, the Madjapahit was not in existence yet.

Examine all the gold threads and sophisticated handicraft and you cannot deny the Hindu influence. The fact that the gold was found in Surigao is another telltale evidence that our name Visayan is founded on historical accuracy. The trouble with the ideologistas is they want to erase EVEN the basis of our name. Our name is from ancient royalty 10 centuries ago, Sri Vijaya in both modern and ancient Hindi translates to Resplendant Victory.

The first part is an introduction to Hindu traditions and how they were used, concerning the gold artifacts in the subsequent videos.

Charice confronts haters with video
By KAYE VILLAGOMEZ
June 6, 2011, 9:04am

MANILA, Philippines -- While shopping for the perfect month to officially launch her new album, Charice strategized this new career chapter by opting first to release a new video for a song she “dedicates to haters.”

The Filipina international teen celebrity disclosed to Teen.com that she is pushing for the cut “Louder” to get video priority.

“We’re gonna do the music video for ‘Louder’ because I really love to dance and the song is really an inspirational song. I can totally dedicate that to all the haters out there,” the 18-year old “Pyramid” hitmaker said.

She then detailed how the lyrics of the song serve as perfect weapon against critics. “You know, like, I don’t need you. I don’t need no shoulder, you know? I’m gonna be a soldier. No one can bring me down. I’m just gonna do this and be brave. That’s why it’s called ‘Louder’ because you being brave is so much louder than you being weak.”

Confident about the cut, she went on: “It’s such an amazing song, such an inspirational song.”

In the same Teen.com interview posted May 31, TV's Sunshine Corazon felt the song has “Glee” elements written all over it. “That ('Louder' getting 'Glee' exposure) would be amazing! Especially if I’m gonna do a dance that would be a perfect song. Let me call him (Ryan Murphy, the show's co-creator). Hello? That would be awesome.”

The album, which is expected to contain collaborations with Nick Jonas and Bruno Mars, has yet to be titled. “We’re still thinking about it. I’m still working on some more songs right now to put on the album and still gonna work on the music video, but once we finish all that, we’re gonna think about the title and the release date. But definitely it’s gonna come out maybe around October or something like that. Right now I can’t say anything [else] about it (collaboration with other acts), but it’s pretty exciting because I’ve worked with these great people and I can’t wait for my fans to see the back of the album. For sure, they’d be like, ‘Whoa, really? She worked with them?’ So, it’ll be amazing.”

Charice also told Teen.com how she never gets used to hearing rave comments about her voice that she tends to feel “embarrassed” listening to positive reviews because she herself is a fan of other singers' range.

“It is very cool, but at the same time it’s kind of like a big responsibility because every time you go somewhere or you perform or anything, you always have to show the people that you deserve that compliment. Nerve wracking!”

Global endorsements

Charice is also becoming a brand in teen Hollywood these days. Two articles about the belter as endorser recently came out via Business Wire (for Orange flavor of Life Savers® Gummies Flavor Vote) and Justjaredjr.com (for Acuve® Moist® Brand Contact Lenses campaign).

Life Savers is currently encouraging voters in the US to pick a new flavor, and Charice signed up to rally Orange. “I wanted to support the Orange Life Savers Gummies because I’m all for the underdog, and in the world of candy, I think Orange doesn’t get enough attention. Some great people helped me out early in my career by sharing my music with their friends and I want to be that person for Orange – I want to share his story. He may not be the most sporty or social of the group, but he’s clever, smart and tasty,” explained Charice who dropped other candidates Blue Raspberry and Lemonade.

Meanwhile, she joins Joe Jonas, Meaghan Martin, Sterling Knight and runner Allyson Felix for the Acuve product promo where participants are invited to pick from the mentioned celebrities for a chance to be coached by them for a day. It is for this campaign that Charice did the song “One Day.”

As a “celebrity mentor,” Charice encouraged fans “never to give up.” She said, “One Day isn’t just the name of my song, it’s an anthem for anyone whose dreams might seem bigger than life or unattainable, but they don’t give up. If you have that spirit, you can succeed.”

For his part, Joe Jonas wanted followers to do what they love. He said, “I’d love to work with an aspiring musician or singer. Even when I was acting, music was always very important to me, to my family and I just can’t imagine not doing it. I’m excited to help someone focus on what steps they can take today to turn their passion into a career.”

The other celebrities chose the following coaching themes: “Overcoming adversity” for Allyson Felix, “finding your focus” for Sterling Knight and “accepting yourself” for Meaghan Martin.

From ugly duckling to beauty queen
By: Armin Adina
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Her name has now become synonymous with beauty and grace, but Venus Raj reveals that she did not always feel beautiful about herself.

She may have been named after the Greek goddess of love and beauty, but the 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner-up recalls that when she was young, she would always run crying to her mother because playmates had taunted her and called her “ugly.”

“I got that a lot when I was a child in Bicol,” the 5’9” titleholder recounts. “I was called pangit [ugly], negra [******], higante [giant] and bangkay [corpse]. I didn’t look like a beauty queen!”

The 22-year-old Filipino-Indian beauty says she felt bad about being tall, skinny and having dark skin, and only found solace from her mom, Ester, who would always reassure her: “You are beautiful. Believe me, I’m your mother.”

Her sisters echoed that sentiment, but Venus initially thought her family had praised her looks only to make her feel better. “If it’s not a relative, it would be my teacher who’d tell me I’m beautiful,” she shares, saying she only found reason to believe them much later.

“Very few people had told me I’m beautiful, but I held on to my mother’s words which gave me confidence,” says this Bicolana. “Now, after winning a place in the Miss Universe pageant, lots of people tell me they appreciate the way I look.”

Despite the childhood taunts, Venus bagged several beauty titles in school, including Miss Bato (after her hometown in Camarines Sur) at 15. When she turned 18, she joined Miss Bicolandia, the biggest pageant in the Bicol Region, and finished as a runner up. In 2008, she joined her first national competition, the Miss Philippines-Earth pageant, and was crowned Miss Philippines-Ecotourism.

When she enlisted for the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, which would give her the right to represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant, Venus says there were still some people who doubted her chances.

“I just took note of what my mom told me. She said I should not mind them because it won’t help if I allow myself to get affected,” she confides. And her strategy worked. She bagged the title and eventually conquered the “Universe” with her innate charm.

The winning look

Despite detractors pointing to her answer to the final Miss Universe question as a “major major” factor for the fourth runner-up finish instead of the big win, Venus remains unperturbed. “I entered the beauty pageant industry and prospered in it because I am beautiful. It is, after all, called a beauty pageant. We are judged based on our physical appearance.”

She elaborates: “In most pageants, before you are given the chance to show people what’s inside your heart, you are initially measured by the way you look. For example, at the Miss Universe pageant, you are made to walk first in a swimsuit, then in a gown. If the judges do not like how you project yourself physically, then you will not even be given the chance to answer the final question.”

Beauty has been key to Venus’ success. Born poor and raised amidst rice fields, she can now afford to build her mother a house of sturdy materials right in front of the shabby hut she grew up in. Her earnings as a beauty queen have also paid for the lot where the houses stand. She provides for her family’s needs through endorsement contracts and a lucrative deal as model for the Araneta Center in Quezon City.

Looks may have taken her far, but Venus has more to offer than just her dusky features. She sent herself to university through a scholarship and graduated cum laude with a degree in Communication Arts at the Bicol University. That background has proven helpful in her hosting stint for ABS-CBN’s “Umagang Kay Ganda” and as Philippine Star columnist.

But true beauty goes beyond mere physical looks, says Venus. “God made us all in His image, and He did not create anything ugly. So what sets you apart is what’s inside you, what you can offer others, how you relate to people and how radiant your soul is,” she says.

“I think what really makes me beautiful is my attitude and personality, something I have more than what God has given me,” she adds.

Admittedly, she says, there are times when she feels less beautiful – and that’s when she avoids mirrors. “That is a reality in life. Sometimes you may have problems or become stressed. It will always reflect on the outside.”

She adds: “Whenever I feel that way, I just take a bath. Or get a massage to relax and make myself feel light. I’d feel good afterwards and that gives me a certain glow.” Feeling positive always helps, she advises other women. “You give off a different aura when you’re happy. You may not have a perfect face, but people may notice something different about you, something good.”

Always maximize what you have, what God has given you, says Venus. “In my case, I embraced how I look. And it turned out that what I thought made me ugly became my assets in the Miss Universe pageant.”

Thanks to her winning attitude, the girl taunted as an ugly duckling during her growing up years in Bato, Camarines Sur, has developed into a beauty queen worthy of her name.

A5N Div 1 Match Report: Philippines Remain in A5N Div 1 with Resounding Win Over Malaysia
06/04/2011

BYu3iwkzvc0

http://www.prfu.com/uploads/3/4/2/3/3423840/8774838_orig.jpg?307

The Philippines National Rugby Union Team easily defeated Malaysia in the battle to stay in A5N Div 1 in Seoul Korea today with an 86 – 20 win. This victory allows the Philippines to remain in the A5N Div 1 tournament in 2012 while Malaysia are now relegated to Div 2. The Philippines head coach Expo Mejia is confident that the Philippines will come back next year and claim victory at this level and win promotion to the Premier Division in the Asian 5 Nations tournament in 2013 with a view to competing for a Rugby World Cup qualification in 2014. “The current national men’s team has an average age of 22 and these players will develop over the next three years and will hit their peak in time to challenge for a top spot in Asia.”

After narrowly losing 34 - 20 to the number 1 ranked team Korea on Wednesday, the Philippines came out with all guns blazing to prove not only to themselves but to the Asian Rugby Community that they will be force to reckon with in the coming years. Korea are currently ranked 33rd in the world and the Philippines, who have yet to receive a ranking pushed the Koreans to the limit. This was evident today when Singapore were beaten by Korea by 58 to 19, meaning the Philippines were the closest team to Korea in this year’s A5N Div 1 tournament.

Oliver Saunders & Justin Coveney

The game against Malaysia opened with the Philippines scoring the first four tries in the first 15 minutes of the game, with the outside backs dominating the opposition. Joven Clarke, Gareth Holgate and Justin Coveney all crossed the line while Oli Saunders converted three to take a commanding lead of 26 – 0. Malaysia finally entered the Philippines territory and on the back of successive penalties, were able to take two shots at goal to register their first points of the game bringing the score to 26 – 6. Newly-capped test halfback James Price then decided to take matters into his own hands and ran the blind side to link up with the “flying jeepney” Justin Coveney who crossed for his forth try of the day. The Philippines then gave away another four penalties in a row and allowed the Malaysian kicker to slot another two penalty shots and bring the score to 31 – 12.

The final two minutes of the first half saw a try from each side, with Philippines Vice-Captain Chris Hitch making a damaging run through the midfield, carrying three Malaysian defenders across the line with him to score beside the posts. From the next kick-off the Malaysians were able to make steal and their winger chipped-kicked and ran onto a lucky bounce to score out wide on the halftime siren. The Philippines entered halftime with a 38 -17 lead. During the break, National team coach Expo Mejia implored the Philippines to refrain from giving up repeated penalties that were allowing the Malaysians to look better than what they were playing.

To their credit, the Philippine team came out in the second half and played to their patterns with a more disciplined approach. They then played the best half of Rugby at the 2011 A5N Div 1 tournament and scored 56 points to Malaysia’s 3 and proved that they can compete with the top level nations in Asia. James Price, Gareth Holgate, Justin Coveney, Patrice Olivier all scored backline tries before the long serving Josh Sutcliffe was able to drive the forwards over the line from a 5 meter lineout and score the last try of the game to win 86 – 20. This was the biggest victory score in A5N Div 1 history and Singapore had only beaten Malaysia by 52 – 18.

http://www.prfu.com/uploads/3/4/2/3/3423840/1496972.jpg
Chris Hitch and Gareth Holgate

Best Forward for the Philippines was Chris Hitch and best Back was Justin Coveney. Coach Expo Mejia also announced that Philippines Best Player of the Tournament was Gareth Holgate. Gareth will fly directly to Japan from the A5N tournament to start a professional Rugby Contract along with the Philippines Team Captain, Michael Letts.

In 2008 the Philippines were ranked in Div 4 and now in 2011 they are competing and winning games in Division 1. This is an incredible feat and the PRFU General Manager, Matt Cullen was impressed with the standard of play that the Philippines displayed at the tournament. “This is our first taste of Rugby Union at this level of competition and we have already cemented a place in the Division 1 rankings. We will work hard over the next 12 months and we now realize exactly what must be done to win at this level. We look forward to taking on the top nations in Asia in the coming years, Philippines Rugby Union is here to stay”

Pacquiao invited to be guest speaker in World Youth Day
By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ
June 10, 2011, 1:18pm

MANILA, Philippines – Congressman and boxing champ Manny Pacquiao may just be the first-ever Filipino to be a guest speaker at the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations. This year, the World Youth Day festivities will be held in Spain.

The Sarangani representative was one of the many personalities invited by the World Youth Council, based in Vatican, to partake in the grand gathering that takes place from August 16 to 21 in Madrid, related Eugene Alzate, a board member in the Mindanao province, as reported by Bomboradyo.

Pacquiao has not yet acceded to the invitation, the report added.

The eight-division world champion, a devout Roman Catholic, often credits his achievements as blessings from his Creator. Pacquiao’s spirituality likewise translates to his firm yet frequently criticized position against the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Bill.

Blessed John Paul II, who served as Pope from 1978 to 2005, initiated the World Youth Day back in 1985 as an annual “great meeting of young people from all over the world… to celebrate and learn about their faith,” as stated in the event's official website.

In 1995, the World Youth Day was held in the Philippines, the first time for an Asian country to be a host. To this day the five million-strong crowd that participated in the closing mass in Luneta Park holds the world record for the biggest Papal gathering in history.

The anthem for that year’s WYD, “Tell The World Of His Love,” was composed by award-winning Filipino songwriter and record producer Trina Belamide.

^^ What's really interesting aside from such massive collections is the superb level of craftsmanship of jewelry making at that time that even rivals the modern methods. It's mind boggling to think what kind of technology or methodology they used to make them so highly intricate and sophisticated.

That's the biggest surprise. When I first saw a few pieces at the Ayala Museum (at the old location) not on Greenbelt, I thought they were "made in China" pieces imported to the Philippines centuries ago because the technology was so far advance (esp the box link chain).

Have also read, that the Austronesian "Filipinos" made a big jump to gold technology, after a very brief iron age. By 200 bc, Mindoro had been mining and processing gold. (Can';t remember the source or historian). An article in Arts of Asia 1988 (read this on the internet), a certain Hungarian anthropologist, Laszlo, determined that some gold artifacts found in Egyptian archaeological digs originated from the Philippines. And Rizal noted that Ptolemy (140 ad) had included the Philippines in the map, written about the isles of gold, described its location in the direction of south China sea where the Philippines is.

First time I heard of the Egyptian connection, and yet I am not surprised. The reason why we had a jumpstart on our brief iron age period is because we had such skilled masters and gurus to teach us, the Indians or even the Egyptians. How was India and Egypt connected? Alexander the Great made frequent stopovers to Alexandria, in Egypt before his conquests of the Middle East, Persia and finally his last stop, India. That was how the link to India was made. One of his generals, a Ptolemy, inherited Egypt but maybe the astronomer Ptolemy who called the Philippines Maniolas was only a namesake. The Ptolemaic Dynasty was founded on the strength of Alexander. The last of the Ptolemies was the unfortunate but beautiful Cleopatra who committed suicide with Marc Antony instead of surrendering to Octavian, who later on became Augustus Caesar.

Now that is really music to my ears, if the ancient Egyptians considered us their version of the mythical El Dorado. Except that we were not mythical. It's even fascinating if some of Cleopatra's jewelry had the tatak Proudly Made in the Philippines !

^^ I cant read it myself the texts are hazy. The texts are almost unreadable on the monitor of my laptop. Even China itself or Cathay hindi claro sa illustrations. Coz we were supposed to be the islands south of China accdg to the Egyptian. We might need to see the original document.

some references on hand:

http://marsantos.tripod.com/history.htm

According to Jose Rizal (national hero), on Ptolemy's map, which was made before the second century A.D., the group of islands now known as the Philippines was called Tawalisi. Ptolemy got his knowledge from a sailor named Hippalus, the same man who discovered the monsoons in the southeastern Asiatic regions. In later editions, however, there is group of islands in about the location of the Philippine group which bears in different editions the names of Maniolas, Barusas or Baroussai and Puloan or Palawan. In connection with these different names it is often stated that they were used in turn to designate the whole group. But according to Rizal, Baroussai is the Visayas in Ptolemy's maps. The name Puloan in the edition of 1540 must have been the name originally borne by the island of Palawan, while Maniolas, whch is very similar to Maynilad, must have been the name given to the vast region around Manila.

Magellan, on seeing Samar and the neighboring islands from the Ladrones on March 16, 1521, gave to the new country the name of "The Archipelago of San Lazaro," it having been discovered on the Sabbath of St. Lazarus. well at least Manila was named by an Egyptian astronomer and not the namesake of a water lily ?

And this was from the chronicles of Ibn Battuta, the famous Moroccan Berber Islamic scholar and traveller. The beginnings of the undeniable Arab influences in the Philippines. Pero ayoko yata yung name na tawalisi, para kasing freshwater sardines sa Taal na masarap, yung tawilis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Tawalisi

Tawalisi (ca. 1350 C.E - 1400 C.E.) is a fabled Southeast Asian kingdom described in the journals of Ibn Battuta [1]. Ibn Battuta said he reached Tawalisi after a sea voyage of 71 days, 34 of which were spent rowing due to no wind. He said he reached China from Tawalisi after a voyage of 17 days. The commentators have never been able to decide the port of departure for the 71 day voyage, and so have concentrated on the 17 day voyage from Tawalisi to China. [2].

A long list of guesses as to the location of Tawalisi have included Pangasinan, Luzon, Sulu, Celebes (Sulawesi), Cambodia, Cochin-China, the mainland province of Kwangtung, and practically every island in South Asia beginning with ta. [3].

Both Sir Henry Yule and William Henry Scott consider Tawilisi and its warrior-princess Urduja to be fabulous, fairy-tale, fiction. Didn't we have an Urduja in our local lore?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_the_Philippines

Maniolas. Used by Claudius Ptolemy in 150 CE to refer to the group of islands south of China.[8][9]
According to José Rizal, "Maniolas" was what Ptolemy used when he referred to the city of Manila itself, Tawalisi for the whole Philippines, and Baroussai when referring to the Visayas. Rizal also said that the country was recorded to Ptolemy's maps when a sailor named Hippalus told him the existence of "beautiful islands" in southeastern Far East. Why even then, the ancient Egyptians considered Las Filipinas as beautiful islands. :colgate:

In this old 1987 article by journalist Celso Carunungan, Spanish Jesuit historian Francisco Colin and Pedro A. Paterno theorized that our archipelago was what the Bible referred to as the Land of Ophir, which was the source of King Solomon's gold treasures. And Claudio Ptolemy called the archipelago Maniolas in 150 AD.

oops hindi ko na lang babangitin ang mga pangalang bigay ng mga bisitang galing china baka pag nakita e aangkinin na naman! starring pa naman ang buong Luzon at Palawan pag nagkataon.

It's not my claim, just read it in one of the links I was following regarding our Austronesian ancestors by historian(s) - how they developed, trading, gold etc. Thbey were sea farers, traders, criss crossed South China seas, Southeast Asia, had contacts with their neighbours, cousins in South east Asia and Vietnam. That's why China's historical claim on South China Sea is pre dated by the Austronesians. Here is a link on "Chryse" on Wikipedia, but go down to the references. Laszlo Legeza wrote the article in 1988 Arts of Asia. I only found a summary of it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chryse

Here is another link albeit a blog that also mentions gold mining as far back as 1000 bc. I found many references to Mindoro as a gold producing place. http://spanishsparrow.blogspot.com/2010/07/economic-pre-colonial-era.html

If you look far to your right, below the equator, in that big sea, you will find dots of islands, "Maniola." There are many names given to the islands over the centuries, it depends on the source. Philippine history was written by the victors (i.e. western colonizers). They didn't have access to Chinese, Muslim, Southeast Asian, etc historical annals. Maybe it's time, the government or the national historical museum assign a commission to create a proper history of the philippines starting from way back when. There's all sorts of sources available now on the internet, various interpretations etc.

The lady professor who was interviewed by Probe on behalf of the Ayala Museum did in fact mention that our gold deposits were quite substantial and second only to South Africa's. There may be some grain of truth to that. So the next question is why us, why not the rest of Southeast Asia? Well, accdg to geologists, like real estate it's about location, location, location.

So the ancients from India and the Middle East did have an uncanny nose in sniffing out where the abundant gold supply is. And that was where they commissioned their ancient artisans, apprentices and goldsmiths to settle and set up shop, naturally. One of those was the Kingdom of Butuan from where the Surigao Treasure was found.

Mining Potential in the Philippines (http://www.prrm.org/publications/gmo2/mpotential.htm)
.1 Geological Setting

Located within the Pacific Rim of Fire, the Philippine archipelago is hypothesized as having been formed 43 million years ago. Its 7,109 islands rest on top of underwater mountains formed by the outpourings of molten rocks from the earth's interior, thus creating an ideal setting for mineral deposition. (After Wolfe, J.A., "Origin of the Philippines by Accumulation of Allochthons" in The Philippine Geologist July- September 1983 Issue, p.17)

In the archipelago, resurgent volcanoes particularly provided access for rising gold-bearing solutions which cool to the geotherm of 300 degrees Celsius at about 400 m depth. At this point, the gold began to precipitate and epithermal gold deposits were formed over geologic time of 1.5 million years from the present time. (After Wolfe, J. A., in International Mineral Development Sourcebook, 1993)

B.2 Mineral Resource Base/Reserves and Estimated Values

The government's mineral resource data (1973-1996) could account only for about 10% of the country's total mineral wealth. Nevertheless, the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB) is continuously updating and upgrading the country 's mineral estimates especially, the metallic sector: 1) iron (iron ore); 2) iron alloys (e.g. chromite, nickel, molybdenum, manganese ore, cobalt); 3) base metals (e.g. copper, lead, zinc, mercury or quicksilver, cadmium); 4) light metals (e.g. aluminum or bauxite, manganese); 5) precious metals (e.g. gold, silver, platinum); and 6) rare metals (e.g. uranium). (Table 1)

The MGB is also updating and upgrading its estimates of the country 's industrial materials or non-metals, of which 38 are now listed. (Table 2)

http://www.prrm.org/publications/gmo2/images/tbl1.jpg

Recently, the government came out with pronounce- ments that the estimated mineral wealth under Philip- pine soil is $800 billion to $1 trillion. (The NEDA chief had posted the total value at $840 billion.) Arriving at this estimate would be a very difficult accounting process. But this kind of inventory is necessary and logical in view of the government’s plan to revitalize the mining industry. This estimation would have been guided by the environmental and natural resource accounting (ENRA) system developed in the 1990s.

In order to check the government’s $800 billion to $1 trillion price tag of Philippine mineral resources, a very rough attempt was made to list these mineral assets and to compute for their present worth based on available market data. But this was done with a caveat: the monetary figures are only indicative, partial and preliminary.

At 10% potential, the combined worth of listed Philippine mineral resources amounts to $2.1 trillion. (Table 4) The 12 listed metallic minerals have a total value of nearly $465 billion. Twenty-five recorded non- metallic or industrial minerals would fetch at least $71.7 billion. The three mineral energy resources amount $1.5 trillion. Quantitative details are found in Tables 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

If and when the total cost of extracting, processing and marketing of these minerals would amount to 50% of the total mineral worth of $2.1 trillion, a theoretical gross profit of at least $1.05 trillion would accrue to the coffers of the nation.

B.3 Mineral Prospects

The London-based 1991 Annual Mining Review, Mining Journal featured the country’s mineral wealth. Based on how much a mining company can mine in a one square kilometer land area, the Philippines ranked 2nd in gold worldwide; 3rd in copper; and 6th in chromite. (After Corpuz, Catalino in Christian Aid & PIPLinks [2004] report). Its write-up on the country ’s gold prospect confirmed the findings of a UNDP study in 1984 that ranked the Philippines second to South Africa in terms of gold endowment per square kilometer (BMG/UNDP/UNDTCD Project Document PHI/85/001).

In 1997, a technical report the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) cited the strategic economic value of the gold ore at Mt. Diwalwal as one that is still easily accessible and that contains the gold metal in concentration from 25 up to 100 grams per ton, approximately 25-50 times more than the famous gold ore from the Witwatersrand Basin in the Republic of South Africa (UNIDO Project Document XX/PHI/97/XXX).

While gold deposits are found throughout the country, they are concentrated in the five (5) recognized gold mining districts: 1) Baguio gold district; 2) Paracale gold district; 3) Masbate gold district; 4) Surigao gold district; and 5) Masara (Davao) gold district.

The Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau in 1986 placed the country ’s gold ore estimated reserves at 2,108,260,000 metric tons that have an average grade of 2.4 gm Au/Mt. (Table 1)

The gold metal recovered from the gold ore reserves would be about 162.6 million troy oz (5.2 million tons). Estimated value of the yellow metal is $73.4 billion.

Usually associated with those of gold, silver deposits have an average silver to gold ratio of 2:1 based on ore assays and production figures of Philippine primary gold mines.

The silver metal recovered from the above gold ore reserves would be about 325.3 million troy oz (10.4 million tons). Estimated worth of this precious metal is $2.4 billion.

Copper deposits are also widely distributed throughout the country, and most copper deposits contain variable amounts of gold and silver. Thus, the country’s copper mines have been contributing a substantial portion of the overall Philippine gold production.

Estimated reserves of the copper ore in 1996 amounted to 4,052,087,000 metric tons that have an average grade of 0.4% Cu. (Table 1) Assessed value of the base metal stands at $55.7 billion.

Chromite deposits occur along the eastern and western belts of the archipelago, and in northern Mindanao. Also known as iron chromium oxide, chromite is the most important chromium ore.

In 1986, chromite reserves measured 91,576,000 metric tons and their grades range from 21.3% Cr to 43.5 % Cr. (Table 1) Assessed worth of the metal is pegged at $1.4 billion.

Nickel deposits, mainly in the form of nickeliferous laterite, also occur along the eastern and western margins of the archipelago and in northeastern Mindanao. In the 1970s, the country was believed to have the biggest nickel reserves in the world.

In 1986, nickel reserves totaled 1,569,870,000 metric tons with an average grade of 1.1% Ni. (Table 1) With an estimated value of $229.3 billion, this makes nickel theoretically the country’s top ranking metallic mineral resource.

In 1997, a survey of major mining firms operating in the Asia-Pacific ranked the Philippines (despite its relatively small land area) second only to Indonesia in terms of geological prospectivity. It should be noted that Indonesia’s total land area measures about 1,919,400 sq km, while that of the Philippines is only 300,000 sq km (or 30 million hectares). Geologists at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau estimate that the potential minerals (e.g. copper, gold, chromite and nickel) onshore cover an area of about 90,000 sq km (or 9 million ha).

The survey ’s accompanying mineral development forecast was that for the period 1995-2015, the Philippines would develop a minimum number of 11 new deposits and a maximum of 30 new deposits. Its bottomline however was that, in all probability, at least one new mine per year would be developed – for an end-total of 20 new mines. Out of that probable total number, 11 mines would be medium- to large- scale epithermal gold deposits, while five mines would be copper-gold deposits. The remaining four mines would be either chromium or nickel mineral finds. (After Clark, Allen L. in Globalizing Philippine Mining [2002] IBON)

According to the Director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the new major gold deposits are:

Bulawan (Negros Occidental) with 12 million tons (under Philex Mines);
King-King (Davao) with 20 million tons (under Benguet Corp/TVI/Echo Bay); and
Longos (Paracale, Camarines Norte) with 1.6 million tons (under United Paragon).
Bulawan under Philex Mining began gold production in 1996 as the first large-scale gold mine developed since the passage of the Mining Act. Longos contains the highest grade of 11.1 gm Au/Mt.

The new major copper-gold deposits are:

Didipio (Nueva Vizcaya/Quirino) with 106 million tons (under Climax-Arimco);
Dizon Extension (Zambales/Pampanga) with 365 million tons (under Dizon Mines, Inc.); and
Far Southeast (Benguet) with 314 million tons (under Lepanto/CRA-RTZ). I only extracted those paragraphs referring to the gold deposits. For the whole range of the country's estimated underground resources, please follow through on the link. The total value is incredibly mind boggling.

Shortest Pinoy stands tall over the rest of the world
By SARAH HILOMEN VELASCO
June 11, 2011, 8:46pm

MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino teenager from Zamboanga del Norte, standing just 22 inches tall, is now proudly towering it over the rest of the world as he is set to be proclaimed the shortest man by the Guinness Book of World Records on Sunday as he turns 18 years old.

Junrey Balawing, who hails from Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte, is slightly taller than a glass bottle or a one-year-old toddler.

Junrey’s father, Reynaldo, is a blacksmith and only stays at home at weekends, while his mother, Concepcion, is the one who takes care of him since he struggles to walk and can’t stand too long.

Reports revealed that when Junrey reached the age of two, he was always sick and showed signs he was no longer growing anymore. Because of this, his parents had him checked by doctors but to no avail.

Unable to find any medical remedy for Junrey’s physical condition, his parents slowly learned to accept their son’s fate.

Now, in a sudden twist of fate, Junrey’s physical shortcoming is set to bring fortune to his family as well as honor for the country when he will be proclaimed the world’s shortest man.

Turning 18 years old on Sunday, Junrey will still undergo three sets of official measurements by the Guinness adjudicator to confirm the record and be officially proclaimed the shortest man.

The Daily Mail quoted Balawing as saying, “If I were the smallest man in the world, it would be very cool.”

The Allstars performing at the Dance2Dance competition in Zurich (Screen grab from YouTube)

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Allstars did it again!

The premiere hip-hop dance group bagged first place at the annual Dance2Dance: The World Streetdance Showcase Competition held last June 11 at the Theater 11 in Zurich, Switzerland.

They outdid nine other groups from USA, Sweden, Poland Italy, and even Switzerland. It was no measly feat, as the jury who evaluated the performances consisted of dance experts such as Burim Jusufi (Rihanna’s dancer), Tiziana Cocca (Black Eyed Peas’ dancer), Kristin Lorello (from “America’s Best Dance Crew”) and Laushaun Price (from the Debbie Reynolds Studio).

Allstars' triumph came with a 5,000 CHF cash prize, or roughly over P250,000. But more than the money, they are grateful for snagging yet another achievement.

“Thank you Lord for the blessings! Thank you Lord for our family! Thank you Lord for everything!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!

PHILIPPINE ALLSTARS, 1ST PLACE in Dance2Dance Competition in Zurich, Switzerland. Thank YOU! :)” read one of their Facebook shoutouts on June 12.

They also thanked their fans for their support.

“[T]hank you ALL for the Prayers =) GOD has given Philippines and ASIA another GOLD =) To GOD be the GLORY!!! WOOOHHHOOOO!! HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL!” the Allstars also wrote.

As seen in the Dance2Dance official website, the competition featured “pre-selected professional dance teams from all over the world to see who’s got what it takes to stand alone, as the best of the best.”

Since their formation in 2005, the Allstars has already won in various prestigious dance contests outside the country. They were the first Asian group to strike back-to-back golds in the International Hip-Hop Open d’Italia (Turin, Italy) and World Hip-Hop Dance Championships (Los Angeles, California) in 2006.

The Allstars enjoyed a winning streak at the V.Ent’s First Annual Dance Awards (as Team of the Year) in 2007, as well as at the World Hip-Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008 and the Malta Guiness Streetdance Africa in Kenya in 2009 (where they both received Gold).

Pop stars Jennifer Lopez (left) and Katy Perry recently wore designs by Dubai-based Filipino designer, Furne One

MANILA, Philippines – Dubai-based Filipino fashion designer Furne One of Amato Haute Couture made waves in the international fashion scene anew when his creations were recently worn by top female pop performers Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry.

According to posts on Amato Couture’s Facebook page on June 13, Lopez wore a sparkly short dress by Amato while performing her hits “On the Floor” and “I’m Into You” during the Capital FM Summertime Ball 2011. According to the official website of Capital FM – dubbed as "the UK’s #1 hit music station” – the annual music fest was held on June 12 at London’s famed Wembley Stadium.

On the other hand, Perry has, on numerous occasions, wore colorful Amato creations in her performances during her “California Dreams Tour 2011,” which began in February this year and will run until November. The tour covers countries in Europe, Australasia, Asia, and the North and South America.

Perry was also seen in an Amato mini dress when she presented an award in Australia’s 2011 TV Week Logie Awards held on May 1.

According to Amato’s official website, One’s brand “caters exclusively to an elite Arab clientele.” But despite this exclusive clientele, Hollywood and equally fashionable circles in Europe obviously can't ignore One's amazing creations.

More from the website, the designer credits his popularity across the international fashion scene to supermodel and “Germany’s Next Top Model” host Heidi Klum. This is after Klum first invited him in 2009 to create the gowns worn by the 18 finalists in one of the show’s episodes, garnering One “assignments from well-known European celebrities” that had him working in Europe for some time.

This year, One was once again invited to design for “Germany’s Next Top Model,” as seen in photos posted also on June 13 on Amato’s Facebook page.

Perhaps One’s most talked-about show locally was the "First of One—A Fashion Collection by Furne One" in October last year where, according to a report posted on Spot.ph in the same month, a number of models slipped as they walked on a slippery runway. It was reportedly even called by some of the show’s guests as the “fall” collection. Nevertheless, the show was praised by personalities such as Tim Yap and Rajo Laurel.

One has also staged numerous shows abroad, such as in the Dubai Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and the Miami Fashion Week.

Filipino Designs Olympic Commemorative Coin: Roderick Rodriguez Makes All Filipinos Proud:cheers:

http://www.coinnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/2008-4th-Olympiad-London-Anniversary-Coin.jpg

To be part of the 2012 London Olympics that's the goal of any person from all walks of life. I believe that any person will do anything just to be mentioned side by side with the Olympics, with any of its aspects or with any thing that is related to it. A Filipino in the identity of Roderick Rodriguez, was able to be part of the upcoming 2012 Olympics. He was a graphic designer. He's the chosen one who designed the Olympic Commemorative Coin that's now in the European money circulation since yesterday.

They have not yet released a very detailed design of the coin but the whole idea revolves around one goal. Mr. Rodriguez said the goal of his design. He said, "People will keep them and that's what makes it valuable."

Yup, for me the only time an individual's achievement is that of the Filipino people's is after the national anthem is played at the olympics or a team effort like the Azkals, granted that they were an all-Filipino team. OR a substantial positive change that affects a large part of Filipino society.

Manny was trained by an American. I consider it the achievement of Roach and thus, rigorous American atheletic training, as much as I do Manny's. The Philippines did nothing but keep him from having a good education and a decent quality of life. He would not have his seat in the House if it wasn't for his fame because he was neither rich nor well educated.

Quirino reforestation project gets nod of global standards group (http://goodnewspilipinas.com/2011/06/20/quirino-reforestation-project-gets-nod-of-global-standards-group/)

A reforestation and agroforestry project being implemented by Conservation International in Quirino, Philippines was recently recognized under the Verified Carbon Standards (VCS) program, the leading global standard and quality assurance system for accounting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions in the voluntary carbon market.

Projects recognized under the VCS would mean that they have been validated to provide real, additional and permanent greenhouse gas emissions that countries, companies or individuals can claim carbon credits for their agriculture, forestry and other land use activities.

The VCS recognition of the Quirino Forest Carbon Project (QFCP) came after it has passed the standards upon validation by a third party auditor, Rainforest Alliance this month. It also achieved Gold-level validation under the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards last year for integrating community and biodiversity benefits in project implementation. These CCB Standards provide a mechanism for validating the multiple benefits that forest carbon projects deliver to local communities and biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. The QFCP is the first forest carbon project in Philippines and also in Asia to achieve both VCS and CCB validations .

“With this latest development, the QFCP is now starting the process to claim carbon credits under VCS – a first in the Philippines and Asia,” said Romeo Trono, Country Executive Director of Conservation International Philippines. This success reveals that it is possible to obtain carbon credits from reforestation projects in a country like the Philippines, where most carbon credits are mostly coming from the renewable energy sector.

“It is a breakthrough for a GHG removal project from the forestry sector to produce carbon credits for the voluntary carbon market, but on top of this, benefits to the local communities involved and biodiversity conservation are also realized,” according to Conservation International. “It’s a three-pronged approach to helping the country by providing communities with alternative livelihood from the reforestation and agroforestry efforts, while simultaneously contributing to mitigating climate change and protecting threatened biodiversity.”

The QFCP is being implemented in the Quirino Protected Landscape (QPL), a 175,943-hectare protected area in Quirino province that hosts diverse endemic and threatened flora and fauna and supports the sustainable development of nearby provinces. The area is the headwater of the Cagayan Valley River Basin, which supports major irrigation systems in the entire Cagayan Valley Region.

“We are working with local communities to implement projects that let them enjoy livelihood benefits while also providing practical, affordable solutions to climate change concerns,” said Trono, explaining that the long-term objective of the project is focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by restoring and protecting forest in QPL, while benefiting local communities and biodiversity resources in a Key Biodiversity Area in Quirino Province, Northern Luzon, Philippines as part of the Sierra Madre Biodiversity Corridor.

“The project creates alternative income for local communities, promotes protection of plant and animal habitats, and helps to stabilize the ecology of the watershed area to ensure a steady supply of water, This VCS and CCBS double validation status has proved the quality of the project, and we hope it will enhance and expand the activities in the QPL,” said Trono.

The project consists of establishing 177 hectares of agroforestry and reforestation parcels within Integrated Social Forestry (ISF) farms. These are managed by local community members who voluntarily offered their areas for the carbon sequestration project for the next 23 years from project startup in 2007.The project has already planted 41 hectares of ISF farms with various fruit trees such as lanzones, rambutan and citrus sp., and indigenous tree species such as molave, kalantas, narra, and balakat gubat, among others, in Maddela, Quirino.

This year, planting of fruit trees and tree species will continue on 136 hectares of agroforestry and reforestation areas in the other villages covered by the project. The project is expected to sequester 31,771 tCO2 over its entire project duration, provide direct benefits to 96 participating households and help restore biodiversity and improve ecosystem services that the local communities can enjoy.

This project with multiple benefits was possible with the participation of the Moretrees, non-profit carbon offset provider, for providing the full project funding. According to its website, moreTrees “believes that the offset should not be applied to benefit a specific country in order to satisfy its Kyoto Protocol standard.” As such, moreTrees’ investment that ensures benefits to the Philippine project site is a very good example of invoking partnerships with the private sector in addressing simultaneously community development, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation/adaptation for sustainability.
The QFCP is the second project by the Conservation International Philippines to receive the gold rating after the same rating (under the CCB Standards, Second Edition) was approved for the Philippine Peñablanca Sustainable Reforestation Project (PPSRP) in Peñablanca, Cagayan in December 2009.

The QFCP is implemented in partnership with the Quirino-based Palacian Economic Development Association, Inc. (PEDAI), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the provincial government of Quirino, and the local governments of Maddela and Nagtipunan, Quirino.

HIS IS not a Horatio Alger story.

José L. Cuisia Jr., known to friends as Joey, is the eldest son of a respected San Miguel executive of Spanish-Filipino descent, the late José Cuisia Sr.

His mother, the late Magdalena Lampe Cuisia, lost her mother at an early age. She was born to a German father and was raised in a convent run by German nuns. She was very much known for her delicious Spanish delicacies, such as paella, embutido, galantina, and more.

THAT WINNING FILIPINO SMILE!

PINOY PRIDE AS LEE VAN CORTEZA AND 16 OTHER FILIPINOS ADVANCE TO THE FINAL 64 OF THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN DOHA

Story and Photo by Ted Lerner

(Doha, Qatar)--The Philippines made history tonight on the fourth day of the 2011 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar as the group stages came to a close after four days of exciting pool action.

When Lee Van Corteza pulled away from Sweden’s Marcus Chamat in the last session of the day, and won what had been a very close match, 9-6, it meant that a record setting 17 Filipino players had advanced to the 64 player, single elimination knockout stage which begins on Wednesday.

It’s not difficult to do the math and come up with the astounding result. Over one quarter of the players in the final 64 in the most prestigious pool tournament in the world are Filipinos. The onslaught of Pinoys making a serious run at the World Championship this year runs the gamut of the Philippine pool spectrum: from the legends, the new breed of stars who have risen to the top in recent years, the young guns who have just emerged, all the way down to the unknowns who ply their trade anonymously in the deserts of the Middle East.

Among the more notable Filipinos who will see action Wednesday are Hall of Famers Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, who is also the defending champion. Then there’s current stars Dennis Orcullo, Corteza, Ronnie Alcano, and Antonio Lining. Younger hot shots Roberto Gomez, Jeffrey De Luna, and one of the Philippines hottest players of the moment, Carlo Biado also qualified. And so did Antonio Gabica, who now lives and works in Qatar as a coach for the Qatar national team.

Although the sheer numbers of great Filipino players in the final 64 almost assures the Philippines of at least a semi-final spot come Friday, Philippine fans shouldn’t be counting their chips just yet as the overall field now assembled for the knockout stage is clearly one of the toughest in recent memory. Major upsets were few and far between in the group stages, as the notoriously tough Diamond tables seemed to ensure only the best players made it through. The standard of play has been exceptionally high which resulted in nearly every single big name in pool making it though to this year’s knockout stage.

Day four was Judgement Day at the World 9-ball Champion with all 32 race-to-9, alternate break matches do-or-die contests. As usual in pool when everything is riding on the line, there was plenty of high drama, loud sighs of relief and massive devastation inside the beautiful confines of the Al Sadd Sports Club. Five matches went to a sudden death rack, while 7 matches went to 9-7.

Easily the most dramatic moment came in the second session in a match between Poland’s Mariusz Skoneczy and former double world champion Wu Jiaqing(formerly known as Wu Chia Ching), who had only recently gotten back in the professional side of the game after being out of the sport for two years because of a row with his association in Taiwan.

Wu jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before Skoneczy took complete control of the match. Up 8-5 and with only three balls remaining on the table, though, Skoneczy missed a very makeable 7 ball. That was all the impetus Wu needed and before Skoneczy knew what hit him, the match was tied 8-8.

The final rack was one of those classic nerve rattling encounters that happens in professional pool when everything, including careers, are riding on the slightest turn of the ball and fans wonder how the players can even hold the cue stick. Skoneczy broke and got a ball down, but the pair ended up in a tense safety battle. The Pole had two lucky pots but with the win in sight he missed on a long shot down the rail. Then Wu was motoring to the finish line when he inexplicably missed a straight in shot on the 8-ball. While Wu looked skyward in complete horror, Skoneczy stepped up and cleared for one of the biggest wins of his career.

The Philippinines’ Gabica went up early against China’s Fu Jan Bo 6-1 but then withstood a furious comeback from Fu. The two went hill-hill until Gabica took the case game for the win.

Ameican Hunter Lombardo, one of only two Americans in the World 9-ball Championship this year, and a relative newcomer on the international stage, joined compatriot Shane Van Boening in the final 64 with a hard fought win over Qatar’s Waleed Majid. With the boisterous home crowd cheering him on, Majid battled back from 8-4 down to tie the match at 8. Lombardo prevailed in a nerve racking final frame to advance.

Other interesting facts and trends of note as the World 9-Ball Championship moves into the knockout stages.

-23 players from Europe made it into the final 64

-6 players from Chinese-Taipei, including last year’s runner up Kuo Po Cheng, qualified.

-All five Japanese players in the tournament qualified.

-Two Iranian players made it to the final 64. It’s first time ever in a World 9-ball Championship that players from Iran have made it to the knockout stage.

-Despite putting up spirited efforts, and while having clearly made major strides in improving their games, no Qatari or Gulf country player made it through to the final 64.

-2007 World 9-ball champion Daryl Peach of Great Britain and runner up Roberto Gomez of the Philippines will play each other in the round of 64 KO stage.

The final 64 single elimination knockout stage of the 2011 World 9-Ball Championship begins at 10am(GMT +3) Wednesday at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, Qatar. All players will see action on Wednesday and the field will be reduced to 32.

MANILA, Philippines — The World Cup dream is on for the Philippine Azkals after they shut out Sri Lanka, 4-0, in the second leg of the 2014 Fifa World Cup Qualifiers round one at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.

The Philippine team moved to the second round of the World Cup qualifiers for the first time in this country’s football history and will meet Kuwait in another home-and-away match on July 23.

The Philippine Azkals peppered Sri Lanka with goals courtesy of star strikers Phil Younghusband, Chieffy Caligdong and Angel Guirado.

Younghusband, who hurt his hamstring in the away leg in Sri Lanka, scored on a penalty kick in the 57th and the 43rd minute.

Caligdong struck a goal to open up the scoring in the 19th minute while Guirado tripled it in the 51st.

The Fil-British Younghusband have been on the attack since the get go, despite a muddy and slippery pitch, with his shots either sailing wide or being gathered by the Sri Lankan keeper.

The Philippines’ second goal was first called off side, but was officially counted after a huddle by the referees.

Midfielder Fil-German Stephan Schrock, who lost his cool in a scuffle and skipper Aly Borromeo were booked for their second yellow card of the entire leg.

Schrock and Borromeo may be suspended in the next game of the Azkals as per FIFA regulations.

Heavy rain met the kickoff of the second leg between the Azkals and the Red Braves at the 77-year-old stadium in Manila.

But that did not stop the Azkals from dominating the match.

Ballet Manila receives standing ovation in Ireland
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/226494/pinoy-abroad/ballet-manila-receives-standing-ovation-in-ireland

Ballet Manila, one of the Philippines’ classical ballet companies, had a successful maiden tour in Ireland, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said over the weekend.

The troupe earned praise from the Philippine Embassy in Dublin for its show dubbed “Philippine Ballet Gala Concert-East Meets West," according to a DFA statement.

Performing for Ballet Manila was Liza Macuja-Elizalde, the first Philippine ballerina and the artistic director of the troupe, the DFA said.

“You are a great ambassador for Philippine culture and the arts," Philippine Ambassador Ariel Abadilla told Elizalde after the Dublin finale, according to the DFA.

Abadilla was “very pleased" with the media reviews and the reaction of the predominantly Irish audience, the DFA said, noting that members of the audience gave the finale a standing ovation.

In the audience were two Irish cabinet ministers and several Irish government and business personalities, according to the DFA.

Producing the shows in Ireland were Dublin-based Filipina trader Teresa Adaya-Meaney and her Detail Design Production.

The DFA said, “[The shows] aimed to raise the profile of the Filipino community in Ireland by showcasing the talent and world-class artistry of Filipinos."

On the other hand, it said Filipinos in the audience were “visibly touched" by the nationalistic elements in the repertoire. “The show made us so proud to be Filipinos," the DFA quoted a long-time Filipino resident in Ireland as saying.

Pinoys Tadd Gadduang and Marko Germar In for Top 5 Male Dancers of SYTYCD

For the first time in “So You Think You Can Dance” history, 2 of the top 5 male contestants are Filipino.`

Hip-hop dancer Tadd Gadduang and contemporary dancer Marko Germar may be rivals on stage, but these 2 Filipino-Americans are good friends in real life.

If both continue to do well on the show, they could face each other during the finale.

When asked if it will affect their friendship, Germar said, “Not at all. We’re roommates.”

Melanie Moore, Germar’s dance partner, said that the 2 Pinoys were in a “bromance.”

“They love each other,” Moore said.

“No matter what happens, we’ll always be supportive of whoever goes farther,” Tadd said.

During a recent episode, Gadduang proudly talked about his Filipino roots.

“Over the past year or two, I’ve realized that a lot of who I am today is based on how my parents raised me. It’s really connected to my heritage,” he said.

Though he is from Utah, many of Gadduang’s Filipino relatives are from the Bay Area. Should he win, he plans to give back to kababayans in need in the Philippines.

“I’ve budgeted and figured out how I want to split up the money because there are so many things back home that my friends and I are involved with, with helping people. There’s a bunch of charity and community work that we want to do,” Gadduang said.

Germar, meanwhile, was an early favorite by judges and fans alike. He admits that being a frontrunner comes with challenges, but adds that he is up for it.

"There’s definitely extra pressure. We don't really focus on that. It's anybody's game," Germar said.

The Emmy-nominated show is one of the most popular reality contests in America.

Germar and Gadduang have both expressed their gratitude for the support of the Fil-Am community.

$250,000 and other prizes await this year's "So You Think You Can Dance" winner. The top 4 will compete for the title of "America's Best Dancer" at the finale on August 11.

2 weeks ago, our cab hit and dragged two motorbikes. Nagpause lang ang driver namin tapos wala lang, ni ha, ni ho wala. And there were four people down on the ground.

Another intern na galing Pinas, nadisgrasya dito, duguan sila pareho, nadala sa ospital. Yung isang Briton na dati kong kasama sa trabaho, he needed surgery when he came back to UK. I can tell so many stories. Yun nga lang ang daming KSP dito na hindi naman kinakausap sabat ng sabat.

Anyway hope the UP AGT will be successful and be replicated all over the country.

Asia Society honors 9 outstanding Pinoy youths
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/226990/pinoyabroad/asia-society-honors-9-outstanding-pinoy-youths

The Asia Society, a widely respected international organization based in New York, has selected 9 outstanding young Filipino leaders to become this year’s batch of honorees for its Asia 21-Philippines Young Leaders program.

The honorees will take part in the "Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit" in November in New Delhi, India.

The summit gathers the top 200 young leaders of the Asia-Pacific region who are seen as the next generation of movers and opinion makers.

This year’s batch of honorees include:
Atty. Paulino Salvador Leachon;
Atty. Lesley Jeanne Cordero;
Maria Doris Dumlao;
Jeffrey Tarayao;
Alvin Cloyd Dakis;
Michael Sandejas;
Soledad Sylvia Nubla-Lee;
Annalie Edday, and
Joy Anya Lim.

They were chosen based on their leadership experience, achievement in their chosen field, impact of their leadership and service to our country.

For the selection of this year’s delegates of the summit, the Asia Society center in the Philippines screened more than 100 nominations of Filipino leaders between the ages of 25-40 years old.

Former Filipino fellows include education advocate Ching Jorge, former National Youth Commission Chairperson Bam Aquino, DNA Forensics Scientist Dr. Ma. Corazon De Ungria, human rights lawyer Atty. Damcelle Torres-Cortez, social entrepreneur Lt. Col. Dennis Eclarin, IPVG’s Enrique Gonzalez and Mayor Jeng Reyes of Alicia, Isabela.

2011 honorees

Cordero was chosen this year for her contributions as the Assistant Secretary for Legislative affairs under the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

Leachon is being honored for his management and policy implementations as the Mayor of Calapan City. During his term, the city was awarded by the Asian Institute of Management in 2008 as one of the Most Competitive Cities in the Philippines.

Nubla-Lee and Edday both represent the non-profit sector. Nubla-Lee is being honored for her work in providing access to quality higher education for underprivileged public high school students through Pathways to Higher Education.

Edday being honored for her advocacy of improving educational systems in the rural areas through programs such as Quality Education in Sarangani Today (QUEST).

Tarayao was chosen for his achievements in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) being the current Chief CSR Officer of Meralco and previously, the CSR Head of Globe Telecom.

Under his leadership, Globe Telecom’s CSR Programs has allowed the company to help public school teachers in rural areas access educational videos that they can use for their classes.

Dakis, the Founding Chairman and National President of Alliance of Young Leaders & Advocates International, Inc., is being honored for his advocacies in health and human rights.

Lim, a social entrepreneur from Cebu, founded ANTHILL Fabric Gallery, an organization that promotes cultural preservation of the Philippines’ weaving industry. Dumlao is being honored for her work as a multi-awarded business reporter from the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Finally, Sandejas represents the arts and culture sector by using his films as a means to shed light on marginalized sectors of society such as the deaf. His films such as "Dinig Sana Kita" (2009), "Tulad ng Dati" (2006) and "What Floor Ma’am" (2009) have won local and international awards. - VVP, GMA News

another 'MOST'!
PHL vies for 'most networked country' in the world
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/226984/technology/phl-vies-for-most-networked-country-in-the-world

More than a decade ago, the Philippines was well-known for being the "texting capital of the world."

Just recently, the country earned the "social networking capital of the world" moniker for having the highest Facebook penetration rate, with approximately 94 percent of Filipino Internet users registered on the social network.

This year, the country is once again gearing up to clinch another title as the "world's most globally networked country," through an online application developed by payment and remittance service provider Western Union.

"Western Union is currently the world's most globally connected company. With this [application], we are giving people the chance to see their own personal global connections in an exciting new way," said Patricia Zamora-Riingen, senior vice president for the Pacific and Indochina at the Western Union Co.

Users interested to join in on the campaign simply have to log on to the Western Union World website and use the app which will get data from their Facebook account in order to calculate one's World Index.

Steve Peregrino, marketing director at Western Union, said that the World Index is computed by the total number of countries one has a connection to multiplied by a person's number of international connections.

Famous professional and technology blogger Abe Olandres, author of the blog YugaTech.com, for example, has a World Index of well over 15,000, with friends in about 48 countries.

Each individual score will contribute to the score of the respective country, which will provide the ranking of the most geographically connected nations.

Riingen said that given the Philippines' social networking stature coupled with the more than 2 million overseas Filipino workers spread across the globe, the country stands a chance against other countries in clinching the title.

"Filipinos have come a long way, venturing out into strange lands, building their networks and immersing themselves in new cultures whilst maintaining strong ties with their family and friends back home," Riingen said.

As of writing time, a Filipino named Richard Domingo Tan is currently at the top of the world rankings with a World Index of 215,365. It should be noted, however, that only about 500 have signed up to use the application.

Aside from the visually appealing application for discovering one's global connections, the site also features interesting facts about the country's international money movement relations.

Using information from the World Bank, data such as Gross Domestic Product, Direct Foreign Aid, Remittances, Foreign Investments and Population can be visualized using the intuitive application.

By ticking the "Remittances" box, for example, users can view how worldwide remittances grew for the period between 1980 and 2009.

The Philippines ranks fourth in terms of current money transfers received by Filipinos in the country, next only to Mexico, India and China, data from the website show.

Clicking on a country would give the users more specific information about that country, as well as "remittance corridors" which shows where country remittances are originating from or leading to.

Western Union officials refused to disclose the volume of remittances to the Philippines they have processed in the first half of the year, but data from the World Bank indicate that, amid escalating inflation rates, remittances to the Philippines remain the fourth highest in the world, with $21.4 billion in remittances. — TJD, GMA News

Leyte gets second IT park (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Economy&title=Leyte-gets-second-IT-park&id=35558)
Posted on July 28, 2011 10:02:42 PM

TACLOBAN CITY -- The town of Palo is positioning to become an information and communication technology (ICT) hub in Leyte province and the entire Eastern Visayas, with another ICT park to be established in barangays Pawing and Campetic.
The proposed 23-hectare Leyte IT Development Park, a project of businessman Charles Uykim, is located across the provincial government-run Leyte ICT Park, which is a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)-accredited facility.
Palo town Mayor Remedios L. Petilla said in a press conference that the developer is applying for the required permits from her office. Construction is targeted to start within the year.
The new IT park will add to the growing community along Maharlika Highway which includes the Leyte ICT Park, government offices and other businesses that have started to locate within the Government Center as well as residential subdivisions that have sprouted along the corridor.
Ms. Petilla said that the Leyte IT Development Park will host facilities for IT businesses as well as a hotel and recreation area.
“These investments will spell [sic] more income to the local government unit; but more importantly, it will create more jobs for the people in Palo in Leyte and other parts of the region,” the mayor said.
Ms. Petilla said that, with new businesses coming to the Palo area, the local government is putting in place the necessary support system to ensure smooth flow of business and investments, particularly in terms of securing needed documents and permits.
The municipal council of Palo is drafting the Business and Investment Code, while the Mayor’s Office recently established the Economic and Development Unit which will address concerns of investors and local entrepreneurs. -- Reyan L. Arinto

Filipino dragon boat paddlers win gold medal in Tampa Bay

MANILA—Is being under-supported enough push to become a world champion and even a world-record holder?

Ask the cash-strapped Philippine Dragon Boat team as it let the paddling do the talking.

The team splashed its way to a third world title in the biennial International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) 10th World Dragon Boat Championships by winning the Premier 1000m event (small boat) in Tampa Bay, Florida Friday.

On the final round of, the Filipinos’ 4:57.13 clocking set a new world record for the event.

Australia won the silver medal (5:00.09), while Hungary captured the bronze (5:03.71) in the race no. 27 in day two of the 10th Worlds.

The win in the 1000m Premier event (small boats) is Philippines’ first gold medal at the 2011 Worlds thus far.

A small boat in dragon boat parlance has up to 10 paddlers while, a standard boat has up to 22 paddlers.

The Philippines won two gold medals at the 2009 Worlds in Prague, Czech Republic in standard boats (not small boats, as reported earlier by this contributor)—the 200m Premier Mixed and 200m Premier Open categories.

It was reported that the Filipinos will compete in small boat events—and not on standard boats, which means the the paddlers will not defend their world titles in the 200m Premier Mixed and 200m Premier Open categories using standard boats.

But a schedule of the races, though with many blanks yet to be filled, found on the Internet showed that the Philippines is competing in small boat events.

In the preliminary round (race no. 24 of scheduled races for the day), the Philippines topped the race with a 4:50.79 clocking with Australia (5:02.59), and Hungary (5:09.87) behind.

"So You Think You Can Dance" has shrunk the number of contestants to four as there is only a week left before the winner of season 8 is crowned. On Thursday, August 4, 2011.

It was revealed that Melanie, Sasha, Marko and Tadd are going to compete on the finale. Meanwhile, Ricky and Caitlynn have to bury their hope to take home the top prize when they were eliminated that night.

In between the result announcements, "American Idol" alum Pia Toscano took the stage to perform her new single "This Time". Bad Boys of Dance and Rock the Ballet additionally catered the audience with a dance number.

Next week, the four finalists will be competing for the champion title. They will be joined by returning contestants Mark Kanemura, Robert Roldan, Lauren Froderman (season 7 winner), and Joshua Allen (season 4 winner).

Pinoy graduates summa cum laude at Madrid university

A Filipino scholar graduated summa cum laude at a university in Madrid, Spain, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Saturday.

“Dr. Teodoro Fajardo Jr., who is from Cabiao, Nueva Ecija, successfully defended his doctoral thesis titled ‘Picornavirus Ires: Accesibility and Inhibition of Viral Gene Expression’ on July 20," the DFA said.

The DFA said Fajardo — food and drugs relations officer at the Food and Drugs Agency and medical technologist at the Department of Health — earned his doctorate degree in Molecular Biology at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid.

Fajardo’s doctoral thesis focused on the structural and functional investigation of Ires element in the Foot and Mouth Disease virus, the DFA said, noting that the research posed potential applications in controlling the spread of the disease.

“The research can be used as reference in other scientific researches and in the development of antiviral therapies," the DFA said.

In 2007, Fajardo had been awarded a scholarship grant by the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) to pursue a four-year doctorate course in Spain. — JE, GMA News

COBRA PHILIPPINE DRAGON BOAT TEAM GRABS TWO MORE GOLD MEDALS

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com
Sat, 06 Aug 2011

The gallant Cobra Philippine Dragon Boat team has grabbed two more gold medals at the 10th International Dragon Boat World Championships in Tampa, Florida.

Removed as a recognized National Sports Association by the Philippine Olympic Committee headed by its president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco and receiving no support whatsoever from the Philippine Sports Commission under chairman Richie Garcia, the downsized team supported by Philippine Airlines and Cobra Energy Drink and getting a widespread boost from both the television and print media courageously paddled their way to a third gold medal.

The team referred to as the “Dragon Warriors” started off the quest by winning the Premier 200 meter mixed event in a time of 57:07 seconds, finishing ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico and Italy.

The Philippine team was composed of five men and five women who finished over 6.5 seconds ahead of the silver medal winners.

The Filipinos finished the day by capturing a third coveted gold medal in the 200 meter men’s small boat event and thanked their sponsors and supporters in the Philippines who made the trip possible and to the Filipino community in the United States that has rallied around the team.

ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo who is in Tampa covering the championships said the team “thanked the many Filipinos in Florida who continue to bring them food and water and energy bars” in a touching show of support.

The 2007 and 2009 World champions were unable to compete in the standard boat races which fit up to 22 people due to lack of financial support and the lack of equipment.

POC official Mark Joseph circulates a text message seeking to downplay the achievements of the Dragon Boat team and was bitterly criticised on the social networks.

An angry Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association president Go Teng Kok whom Cojuangco and his group are trying to expel from the POC responded to Joseph's text by stating "of all people in the POC you are the most cruel to athletes. You don't mind them suffering, especially the young."

After starting their events at 8:00 a.m. the Philippine team was exhausted when they competed in the finals of the All Comers men’s event over 200 meters at 7:00 p.m. and finished second to add a silver medal to their three-gold tally.

Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN told the Inquirer that it was 32 degrees tropical heat and the finals was our paddlers eighth race for the day adding “they were pooped.”

Lica de Guzman

Another Filipina singing sensation is born. She is Lica de Guzman conquering the music industry in Switzerland. Reports said that she had been trained by the Grammy award-winning Phil Collins.

The amazing singing talent of the 14-year-old Lica currently dominates in Geneva, Switzerland where she was notably born. However, it is anticipated that in the next few months, her singing ability will finally reach Philippines, the native country of her parents.

Lica de Guzman, born on March 8, 1997, is a daughter of Nicanor de Guzman and Waonhor Pangulima who are both Filipinos. Lica’s parents migrated to Switzerland to work.

It was noted that Lica was specially chosen by the famous singer Phil Collins who is a well-known producer at the same time. According to reports, the young singer Lica de Guzman was selected to be one among the Little Dreams Foundation, a certain group where Lica undergoes training with the singer-producer Phil Collins.

For this reason, the young singer had been requested to perform before the President of Switzerland in 2007. President Micheline Calmy-Rey invited the young Lica to sing the “Prendre un enfant par la main” which took place at the “Les coups de Coeur d’Alain Morisod”.

Phl rules World Dragon Boat Racing Championships
(philstar.com) Updated August 08, 2011

LOS ANGELES – The 10th annual World Dragon Boat Racing Championships with 2,000 athletes and 50 teams from 18 countries and regions came to a close Sunday after six days of competition at Seddon Channel in Florida with the Philippine as among the most popular team.

The Philippine team sets world records and their jerseys are hot merchandise items in Tampa.

The Cobra-Philippine Dragon Boat Federation team hiked its gold medal collection to five as it dominated the Premier Mixed 500 meters (small boat) competition. The “Water Dragons" also from the Philippines have performed well here as well this week in the Premier 1,000-meter (small boat) competition in record fashion, the 200-meter men' s race, and Premier 200-meter mixed event.

Held in Prague in 2009 and previously in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Berlin, the International Dragon Boat Federation's biannual event is the highest level of competition in a sport that has been growing globally for more than a decade and appears to be gathering momentum in the United States.

Unlike rowing with long oars, dragon boat teams of 20 or more people use shorter, canoe-like paddles and pull in unison to a thumping drum beat by the leader, stationed facing backward on the bow of a boat that's often carved and decorated like a dragon.

Though certainly not a major American sport, this Floridian city has embraced it and has earned a reputation as a premier spot for dragon boat racing.

Tampa held its first dragon boat races in 2004 and two years later hosted the national championships. It won its bid for the world races in 2007, becoming just the second U.S. city to host the biennial races (Philadelphia was host in 2001). The city itself is home to dozens of dragon boat teams.

The event appeals to fans who enjoy watching colorful vessels each decorated with a dragon's head at the bow that come from all over competing in a festive outdoor atmosphere, a relaxing way to spend a summer afternoon.

"It' s so cool is to walk through Channelside and downtown and see people with jackets that say Russia on the back, (or) China ," said Kevin Burns, co-founder of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute, the host committee.

They come from as far and wide as Hungary, Trinidad&Tobago and Germany and with different styles. To the untrained eye, paddling may look like it's all in the arms but it is really in the core, the abdominals and lateral muscles. The Germans employ tall men doing long, powerful strokes where the relatively small Chinese team effectively use their short, sharp strokes to good results.

In a race that tests their endurance, stamina and teamwork, all paddlers basically stretch their arms forward, slice the paddle into the water with a rapid sit-up, then stomp back on their feet to lean back and do it again - sometimes more than 120 strokes per minute. Performing that whole motion while not trying to tip a boat that's narrow enough to wobble when one team member even just turns their head, it is no surprise that many races see at least one boat capsize.

The World Dragon Boat championships teams consist of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. Competitors compete on 41-foot-long boats, six to a heat.

There are races from 500 meters to 2,000 meters. There are 18 competition classes with competitors as young as 12 years old in the Junior Division and over 65 years old in the Grand Dragon Division.

The host nation has enjoyed success through the years too as the USA Dragon Boat team has won multiple championships and 50 world medals including a championship at the Nation's Cup in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

A sport almost 2,000 years old, dragon boat races honor the legend of Chinese patriot and poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself in the river to protest his exile by a corrupt government. To prevent his body from being eaten by the water dragons and fish, local fisherman beat their drums and splashed water with their paddles. Dragon boat races were later held each year on the anniversary of his death.-Xinhua

Halili-Cruz dancers are Asia-Pac Grand Slam champions in Bangkok
Posted on August 8th, 2011 under Art & Living Achievements

http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/hcsb.jpg

The Shirley Halili-Cruz School of Ballet came home as grand slam winners in the recently concluded 13th Asia Pacific Dance Competition held at the Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand last July 22 – 24, 2011.
Another great honor for the Philippines for the dance group after bagging most of the major prizes in the different categories.

The Shirley Halili Cruz School of Ballet awarded as “The Most Outstanding Ballet School in Asia” has consistently brought honor and respect for the Philippines with their excellent performances and conduct in the different international festivals and competitions.

For the past 10 years that the group had been participating in this competition, they have always won the grand slam for the Philippines.
What is amazing is the dedication and talent of the Halili Cruz Artistic team led by Artistic Director Shirley Halili-Cruz and ably assisted by ballet teachers and choreographers Grace Garalde-Perez, Anna Tuazon-Balmadrid and Anna Kathrina Halili Cruz. They are all dynamic and very enthusiastic in training the 93 dancers participating in the 13th Asia Pacific Dance Competition in Bangkok, Thailand where they all won and brought laurels to the Philippines. They won 2 Aggregate Trophies, 8 Perpetual trophies, 36 gold trophies, 32 silver trophies, 20 bronze trophies and 64 medals in the different categories they participated in: Classical Ballet, Neo classical, Demi Character, Modern, National and Lyrical Category. There were more than 800 dancers from 34 professional dance companies and dance schools from the Asia Pacific region who participated in the competition. Indeed, it was a great victory for the Philippines!

The Australian adjudicator was so stunned with the performance of the Philippines that she went out of her way to meet the Artistic Director, Shirley Halili-Cruz to express her appreciation and joy seeing the performances of the Halili-Cruz dancers, saying: “These Filipino ballet dancers are well-trained and all of them performed with excellence – the technique is very strong, the concepts and choreographies are very creative, the costumes are well designed, appropriate and elegant, the music are well selected, the dancers are graceful and very confident and they all love to dance. They truly deserve all the awards they won. They are wonderful! to watch. The Artistic Director and the teachers have done their job extremely well.”

The participation of the Halili Cruz School of Ballet has undeniably brought the country pride. While winning the competition is important, there are a lot of other things far more important – the lessons learned and growth stimulating experiences. Each time the Halili Cruz ballet dancers join the international competitions, they gain experiences that build their personality and self-confidence; hone their artistic and creative potentials; build friendship and support system; initiate the dancers to a sense of commitment and dedication; provide the dancers with exposure to other international artist; and establish a standard of artistic excellence. The HCSB has also contributed to the setting of the high standard of the competition through the years.

Eumir Felix Marcial

Zamboanga lad Eumir Felix Marcial made history in becoming the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships.
Marcial overcame Turkish Cengiz Onat, 9-7, in a slam-bang final bout, gaining top podium honors in the light bantamweight division at the the junior world slugfest at the Kazakhstan Sports Palace.

The 15-year-old Filipino took control with a variety of combinations and whooped it up with coach Romeo Brin after being declared gold medal winner in the biennial meet featuring the best and finest junior fighters on the planet.
Marcial was among the most outstanding winners with his championship run spiked by his knockout win over Vaha Eduard of Belarus in the semifinals.
The rangy Filipino stopped Eduard in the opening round, instantly making him the favored bet to win the 52kg division. Onat arranged a final duel with Marcial in defeating Korean slugger Sang Myeong Hang, 17-10.
Marcial gained so much adulation from the crowd when he floored Eduard with a perfectly timed right hook making the Belarusian stumble forward.
Eduard got up at the count of five but the referee waved off the fight after the mandatory eight count at the 1:22 mark with the Belarusian still wobbly at that point.

Onat proved to be a tougher foe but Marcial coped, being flashier and more aggressive.

Marcial led 3-2 after the first round and 6-5 after the second round.
With a two-point lead, Marcial danced away from Onat in the closing seconds and raised his left hand at the bell, knowing he won the bout.
Of the 48 nations that participated in this major event, 15 were able to send boxers to the finals. 12 fighters each from Asia and Europe made the gold-medal bouts.

Philippines ranks number 9 in the most patriotic countries list. (http://www.forbes.com/2008/07/02/world-national-pride-oped-cx_sp_0701patriot_print.html)

Commentary
World's Most And Least Patriotic Countries
Sara Pardys 07.02.08, 12:30 PM ET

If the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center (NORC) conducted its survey on national pride this year, would the United States still rank No. 1?

In 2003, when the survey was last administered, more Americans said they were proud of their homeland than any other country's citizens. But considering President Bush's plummeting approval ratings and U.S. participation in an increasingly unpopular war, the world's most patriotic country may be in danger of losing its title.

The NORC examines two factors: how proud respondents said they were to live in their respective countries, and whether they considered their own countries superior or inferior relative to other countries. For one part of the survey, respondents had to indicate whether they agreed or disagreed with five statements, for example: "I would rather be a citizen of my country than any other country in the world" and "There are some things about my country today that make me ashamed."

Novelty seems to enhance feelings of national pride, according to survey director Tom Smith. Many of the most patriotic countries in the world--like Israel, South Africa and the Philippines--are relatively new nations. Moreover, several of these countries were formed after winning independence from colonial powers or other occupying forces.

"These countries were formed through an act of political will," Smith says, which, in turn, heightens their citizens' loyalty.

Australia, a nation-state that gained independence from Great Britain in 1901, follows the United States in the most-patriotic rankings, with Austria, which dates back to the ninth century but took its current shape at the end of World War II, close behind.

The least patriotic country, according to the survey, is East Germany. Although that Soviet-occupied sovereignty hasn't existed since Germany was reunified in 1990, NORC conducted its first survey in 1985. To maintain consistency, Smith says, the survey is still administered among the same regions.

Even recently, residents of East Germany and West Germany respond differently to questions concerning patriotism. The latter region, which was under Allied control during the Cold War, reports more national pride than its counterparts to the east, who experienced Communist rule.

Behind East Germany are other nations formerly ruled by the Soviet Union, such as Latvia and Slovakia, and nations like West Germany and Norway, which were formed long ago and thus do not have a recent "creation myth" that inspires fervent pride.

War, though, critically influences a country's reported patriotism. Citizens feel it is their duty to support their nation while it is embroiled in international conflict, according to Scott Althaus, an associate professor of speech communication and political science at the University of Illinois. This assumption may explain the overnight spike in Bush's approval ratings after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

But such wartime pride is only temporary, according to Matthew Baum, a visiting associate professor of public policy at Harvard. Bush's initially high approval ratings dropped as the years passed and the fatalities in Iraq mounted.

If citizens do not see positive results, Baum says, a backlash in patriotism occurs. The desire to rally around the flag, then, doesn't last long. So America's patriotism is likely waning with each passing day.

Public displays of patriotism are as diverse as the nations that inspire them. There are serious manifestations, of course, such as when American families congregate to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July or Israeli soldiers gather in silence to mourn fallen comrades. But there are joyfully spirited demonstrations, too; face-painted soccer fans bellowed cheers for Spain (ranked 16th out of 32 countries in the NORC survey) to win the World Cup.

In the presence or absence of war, whether a nation is 50 or 500 years old, citizens of every country show pride in ways only they can truly understand.

^^ I never knew we were that patriotic. :D

A lot of us prefer imported goods from the US. We watch Korean dramas, listen to American singers, dress like Europeans, play with Chinese toys and basically worship almost everything non-Filipino. How could have Forbes possibly come up with that study?

Gilas hammers Malaysia, 86-68
By Joey Villar (philstar.com) Updated August 09, 2011 08:36 PM

Games tomorrow (Hsinchuang Stadium, New Taipei City)

1 p.m.- Malaysia vs Iran

3 p.m.- Jordan vs Japan

5 p.m.- Smart Gilas Pilipinas vs Korea

7 p.m.- Taipei vs UAE

CHINESE TAIPEI - Smart Gilas Pilipinas bucked the absence of Marcus Douthit and JV Casio and the ouster of Asi Taulava late in the third period as it survived a gritty Malaysian side, 86-68, to zero in on a semifinal berth in the William Jones Cup at Hsinchuang Stadium in New Taipei City here yesterday.

Chris Tiu and Mac Baracael fired 14 points apiece while Japeth Aguilar and Marcio Lassiter each made 13 and Chris Lutz added 12 as they filled up the void left by the 6-10 Douthit and Casio, who took a much needed rest for Smart Gilas' duel with Korea today.

"It was not a good game for us, we have to play much better, " said a disappointed Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman after his wards failed to shake off the Malaysians whom they were expected to dominate.

"We tried to rest our point guard (Casio) and our big guy (Douthit) for our game next game against Korea," said Toroman.

After some anxious moments in the first half and early in the third, the Filipinos blitzed the Malaysians with a 24-2 run to turn a 37-38 deficit into a 61-40 bulge late in the quarter.

Then it got ugly.

Taulava went down doubling up in pain after Yoong Jing Kwaan grabbed and squeezed his private parts then picked himself up, chased the Malaysian and hit him twice in the head.

The Fil-Tongan and the Malaysian were later tossed out with 7.4 seconds left in the period.

"He grabbed them, squeezed them then back-punched them," said Taulava. "I wouldn't have reacted that way if he didn't do it, it was like a punch, it's the worst feeling."

"I would like to apologize to everybody who watched the game today for losing my cool,” said Taulava. “No excuses for my action an I'm sorry."

Toroman and Malaysian mentor Go Cheng Hua also had some heated exchange after the incident.

"I just said to him (Goh) his player did something wrong to my player," said Toroman. "When we see the video and we see my player did something wrong, then we'll apologize but if his player is guilty, he should apologize.

"I know it's not right to react like that but I don't think my player wouldn't do it if the other player didn't do it," he added.

Goh was just too happy to give Smart Gilas the scare.

"I can say we played our best game in this Jones Cup," said Goh. "We're considered as regional rivals, that's why we know how to play each other."

The Nationals thus bounced back from a sorry 72-76 defeat Tuesday to the Jordanians, unbeaten in three games at press time, as they moved one win from clinching a spot in the semifinals with a 3-1 card.

Smart Gilas, which also beat Iran and Chinese Taipei, will take on a sharp-shooting Korea team now coached by former national team standout

Hur Jae and managed by local legend Shin Dong Pa at 5 p.m. today in a rematch of their quarterfinal game in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

The Koreans won that match, 74-66.Toroman and Tiu know they'll be up against a dangerous Korea team, which is playing Japan at press time, that has already made a league-leading 37 triples including 13 by naturalized Jarod Stevenson, who is now known for his Korean name Tae Jong Moon, to go unscathed in three games.

"They're stronger than their Asian Games team, they are potent from the outside, moves and cuts a lot. We also have to watch for him," said Toroman referring to Stevenson, whose mother is a Korean, Sung Moon.

"We're preparing for tomorrow (today) against Korea, that's the game we really want to really win for us to be in top position in the semis," said Tiu.

After the Korea game, Smart Gilas will take on United Arab Emirates, which fell to Iran, 55-84, earlier for its fourth straight setback, at 3 p.m. on Thursday before capping its elimination round stint with a duel with Japan at 5 p.m. Friday.

The scores:

Smart Gilas 86 - Tiu 14, Baracael 14, Aguilar 13, Lassiter 13, Lutz 12, Ababou 6, Barroca 5, Ballesteros 4, Hontiveros 3, Taulava 2

Malaysia 68 - Li 15, Yeo 9, Chun 8, Yeow 6, Chuan 5, Tian 5, Ban 4, Batumalai 4, Shee 4, Yoong 4, Eng 2, Zhi 2

Quarterscores: 16-13; 37-34; 64-45; 86-68

Michelle Malkin (top left) is a conservative blogger, weekly columnist, and author of four books. When she was born her parents, both then Philippine citizens, were in the US on work visas. In a 2004 book she defended the internment of Japanese Americans in WWII and in a 2003 column she criticized the "...granting of automatic citizenship at birth to children of tourists and temporary workers."

Antonio Taguba (3rd from left, bottom row) retired in 2007 as the second Filipino American general in the U.S. Army. He authored the Taguba Report, an Army report on detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib prison that was later leaked and published. He again made headlines in 2008, accusing the Bush administration of war crimes in a Physicians for Human Rights report on prisoner abuse in military prisons.

Philippines wins 2 Bronze medals in Physics Olympiad in Thailand
Posted on August 22nd, 2011 under Technology Milestones

http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Miguel-Arnold-Reyes-and-Gerico-Sy.jpg
Miguel Arnold Reyes and Gerico Sy

Miguel Arnold Reyes from the Philippine Science High School Main campus and Gerico Sy from the Philippine Science High School Davao campus bagged 2 bronze medals in the recently concluded 42nd International Physics Olympiad in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Filipino students competed against 393 students from 84 countries in the Olympiad.

The competition is composed of 3 theoretical and 2 practical exams. This year’s theoretical exam include a three-body problem and the Laser Interferometry Space Antenna, solving for the necessary charge of a soap bubble to float perpetually on air, and a problem on the scattering of an ion by a neutral atom. On the other hand, the experimental questions include measurement of capacitance of toothed capacitors and the experimental determination of the position and mass of a ball hidden inside a hollow cylinder. Each questions are 10 points each and are extremely tough even for physics majors.

The absolute winner came from Chinese Taipei and together with participants from China and Kazakhstan, is also the student who got the highest points in the theoretical exams. He also got the highest score for the practical exams.
What is especially note worthy is that according to the team’s Training Director Dr. Jose Perico Esguerra, this is the team with the shortest training period since 2003.

Dr. Esguerra said that this has been possible because these students had strong fundamentals even before the training commenced thru the efforts of Ms. Maria Veronica Torralba of the PSHS Diliman campus and the Physics units of the Diliman campus and the Davao campus.

Kristian Hauser Villegas, Mike Solis, Migel Catalig, and Tram Acuna from the National Institute of Physics (NIP), University of the Philippines Diliman also volunteered to train these students. Dr. Roland Caballar also of the NIP, is head of the Philippine delegation in Thailand.

The Philippines has so far won 1 Silver Medal, 4 Bronze Medals, and 4 Honorable Mention certificates in its six most recent (including this) IPhO participations. Sy’s bronze medal is the first IPhO medal from a student in Mindanao while the rest of the medals are ALL from students of the PSHS Diliman (Main) campus.

Miguel Arnold Reyes and Gerico Sy are actually familiar names in the international science competition scene. Miguel or Migs bagged the second place Grand Award in this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and had an asteroid named after him. While Gerico or Gico, was an honorable mention in the 4th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Beijing, China.

The Philippine delegates were selected through a series of screening exams administered to the best physics students from some of the country’s top science high schools.

The International Physics Olympiad which started in 1967 in Warsaw, Poland, is the only competition in physics recognized by the International Commission on Physics Education. Its counterpart events are the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), and the International Olympiad for Informatics (IOI). These competitions are widely acknowledged as the pinnacle competition for students who are in high school or who just graduated from high school. Most medalists of these competitions are sought after by prestigious universities.

The Philippine participation is financially supported by some members of the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas.

La Union entrepreneur makes handicrafts from twigs and leaves of native trees

BAUANG, LA UNION – Eden Villa is using her knowledge as a Biology graduate to create unique handicrafts using twigs and leaves of local trees.

Eden, who owns David’s Well Crafts, is a self-taught handicrafts maker. She often uses books her husband gave her to create her unique items.

She started by gathering leaves, twigs, tree barks, and plant fibers to start her initial collection of handicrafts.

“Even back when I still in college, I have always toyed with the idea of making do with what I have in my surroundings. I never imagined that gift would be the key to the prosperity my family is enjoying now,” Eden says.

She says in their farm, there are mulberries and silkworms. Instead of disposing emptied silkworm cocoons, Eden processes these waste products to form native flowers and accent pieces to her wooden items.

Aside from the farm, Eden says she sources other materials, such as pine cones, from Baguio and Ilocos.

Her handicrafts products range include wall clocks, home decors, Christmas decors, refrigerator magnets, and smaller items like pens. Prices are cheap from P25 to P1,000 considering the labor that goes into processing the items.

With a little research, Eden says she found out that the products she creates are staple items in homes from the countryside of the US.

David’s Well Crafts is now a major supplier handicrafts to one of the major malls based in Manila. If not for manpower shortage, Eden says they would’ve committed to even more local business entities.

The former domestic helper says she didn’t succeed overnight. She adds that if there was one thing she learned while she was in a foreign land, it was that Filipinos are not lazy.

“Filipinos are hardworking. What most of us lack is the initiative,” she says. Eden also believes that Filipinos do not need to leave the country to have better lives.

“There is hope in our country. We just have to be really driven and industrious. Dollars don’t amount to the fulfillment we all can achieve if we stick to our guns,” Eden says.

HANDLOOMING survives in Bangar, La Union, courtesy of village women who inherited the craft from their elders. PHOTOS BY YOLANDA SOTELO

SEVERAL years ago, a group of Japanese businessmen arrived in the agricultural town of Bangar in La Union and offered to help mass- produce inabel, the handwoven fabric that the town has been creating for centuries.

There was also a group of foreign businessmen who wanted to computerize the handlooming process and make the fabrication of blankets, bath towels, pillow cases and fabrics for dresses and gowns faster.

The businessmen asked Wildreda Rivera, 59, a known weaver and trainer, to demonstrate the handlooming procedures, then tried to engage her services in computerizing the process.

Both instances showed that modernization is tugging at the seam of the age-old inabel weaving industry of Bangar. Local officials and residents, however, continue to resist these advances.

Far from earning more money, the residents would rather preserve the industry’s cultural practices and the unique appeal of their handwoven textiles, Councilor Irene Valencia-Taguiam says.

“Handlooming is our heritage. We want to preserve the uniqueness of our products which will lose their appeal if [these are] mass produced [and created by] machines. Besides, our townsfolk can produce beautiful designs even if they do not have formal schooling. It is an innate talent. We do not want to lose that identity to machines,” says Taguiam, also the town’s tourism officer.

“Besides, with the use the machines, Bangar residents will lose their chance to earn even if they stay at home, and after harvesting their palay,” she adds.

The town has always been synonymous with inabel. During the Spanish era, residents produced the textile starting from planting cotton, spinning the cotton into thread, dyeing and handweaving them into different materials.

Old women in Barangay Consuegra have only faint memories of the boom in the town’s inabel industry. They say the industry started to wane in the late 1960s.

Consuelo Noto Tan, 77, says her late mother left a spool of thread that was dyed at the village’s timbugan, the brick structure where cotton threads were dyed. But save for a braided strand, she had used all as wick for her oil lamp.

“I did not know they were important, or I would have saved them,” Tan says.

Backbreaking

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/files/2011/06/finished-products-298x224.jpg
“INABEL” fabric produced through traditional handlooming is turned into hand towels, bedsheets and material for gowns and dresses. PHOTOS BY YOLANDA SOTELO

Producing the fabric was a backbreaking activity in the olden days, Taguiam says.

Residents harvested cotton, which they themselves planted, after harvesting rice. They removed cotton seeds through an improvised equipment called ladditan.

After this process, the fiber would be spread on a bed of bagasse (sugarcane fibers) and the cotton compacted by beating them with sticks. The compacted fiber is rolled in bamboo sticks and spun through a process called panagtibbi. To strengthen the thread, residents would apply cooked starch on these.

The threads, now rolled in balls, were dyed at the timbugan, then handloomed into inabel.

These days, farmers in the town no longer plant cotton, and the industry is down to handweaving with threads, mostly imported, bought in large quantities from Metro Manila suppliers.

Taguiam says the inabel industry gave Bangar something to be proud of and helped its residents earn a living.

“The town was very fortunate to have an inabel industry. No one was idle and even children earned by engaging in the different phases of the industry that became a show window of values like industry, patience, and craftsmanship,” she says.

Sunset

But she admits the industry is nearing its sunset, with only a few families now engaged in handlooming.

One is retired school teacher Benita Castro, 84, who continues to operate a small shop to give livelihood to her village mates and help preserve the inabel industry.

Castro maintains 20 workers, including Rhodora Rivera and her daughter Roxanne. Roxanne, a Grade 4 pupil, can make at least 10 hand towels a day, earning her P40. Rhodora earns bigger by weaving bedsheets and towels.

Taguiam says many Bangar residents earn through subcontracting, with shops providing them with thread that they handloom at home during their free time.

Others can earn by making plecos, a tassel-like design sewed to a bedsheet’s edges. Sewing the plecos to the edges is another job for some women.

Taguiam laments the waning of the industry. “Sometimes, I blame those residents who told their sons and daughters to study hard to enable them to leave and get away from the inabel weaving industry, which they considered to be a very difficult work. What they did not realize was, because of inabel, they were able to produce professionals,” she says.

http://www.philippineembassy-usa.org/uploads/images/embassy/2011/2011-0815-AJLCJ-Sotto.jpg

Filipino author Samantha Sotto presents her first novel, Before Ever After, published by New York-based Random House, to Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. on August 15, 2011 a the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC.

August 15, 2011, Washington, DC – The world’s largest trade-book publisher, Random House, released the fiction novel, Before Ever After, by Filipino author, Samantha Sotto, last August 2. She is the second Filipino to National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose to be published by Random House. Before Ever After, a love story that defies the boundaries of time and space, is the author’s first work.

Ms. Sotto visited the Embassy of the Philippines today and called on H.E. Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., Philippine Ambassador to the United States. Ambassador Cuisia expressed pride at the achievement of Ms. Sotto, who wrote her book at a coffee shop while waiting for her son to get off school. The Ambassador urged Ms. Sotto to continue with her good work to showcase Filipino talent not just in the US but in many parts of the world.

Ms. Sotto, who lives in the Philippines, said, “…my being Filipino was definitely a plus. My living overseas was not an issue at all with my publisher.” She informed the Ambassador that while the setting of her novel is Europe, the famous island resort of Boracay in the Philippines is an important location in the story. She emphasized that there are no barriers to Filipino talent and one of her goals in being an author is to raise awareness about the Philippines.

The first time author said that she is eighty percent done with her second book. She will be back in the US in October for more promotional events. -- END

Sometimes I think she's just trying too hard to assimilate into American politics. As a conservative right, she just gets venom for it.
Was that picture intended? Doesn't look like a flattering angle though.

It is her views and regardless of how people feel about it, she has an audience. I am more interested in what her parents think about Michelle and her political leanings.

Philippine team wins inaugural UN 'Women Power' Award (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/230445/nation/philippine-team-wins-inaugural-un-women-power-award)

SINGAPORE — A scheme training Filipino women to efficiently run neighborhood stores grabbed top prize at an global UN-sponsored contest aimed at empowering impoverished women in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

"Project Inspire" was launched in March to commemorate the centennial of International Women's Day.

Contestants, who were judged by economists and academics, had to come up with projects that would better the lives of women and girls in regions where females are often neglected.

The "Hapinoy Program" project, which aims to support 1,000 female owners of "sari-sari" convenience stores in Luzon, won the top prize of $25,000, which will go towards training store owners in business development, management and pricing goods.

A special grant of $10,000 was awarded to a team from Thailand for literacy training to women migrants from Myanmar who live in landfills at the border.

Another $10,000 also went to a team from India whose program aims to benefit abused women from Pingla in the country's east, where women traditionally earn a living by singing and painting.

The winners were selected from 10 finalists chosen from 450 youth-driven teams worldwide who had to pitch their ideas in a five-minute video or in a written proposal. Project Inspire is a joint initiative by UN Women in Singapore and MasterCard. — Reuters

Just to the right of Malkin's picture on that display board I posted earlier is a picture of Kalpana Chawla. The caption right below her picture reads as follows:
Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut born in India. She obtained a Master of Science in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas and a second Master of Science degree and Ph D in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado. She died in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Columbia while serving as a Mission Specialist.

In contrast, Malkin's job, as one poster succintly put it, is "to pissed (sic) of liberals".

Malkin's parents should be wondering what their daughter's pic is doing on that display board and what her positive contributions to society have been, when she's not, well, fostering racist attitudes, dividing the country, further muddling the political discussions and stalking people (http://firedoglake.com/2007/10/09/late-nite-fdl-when-malkin-goes-stalkin/).

^^What do "celebrity bloggers" do? Conservatives are there to piss off liberals; at the same time "Liberals" are there to piss off conservatives.

In present-day American politics, neither side are better off or "morally right". Just as much as present-day republicans are war-mongering, democrats are self proclaimed anti war who voluntarily involves the US in another country's civil war (taking sides like aiding the rebels rather than assisting refugees caught in the crossfire!).

And the "liberal" president who pushes for DREAM Act and claims for family unity has deported more illegals than any other presidents. :) Now, I believe than Reps and Dems are just in the same boat, though they won't just admit it.

Again, what do celebrity bloggers do? They want "fame". So they get it no matter what. In Show biz, negative publicity is still publicity.

And wasn't there a post in this thread saying that the jobs of republican is to piss off the democrats?

The democrats aren't without fault. Who sent the first US troops to Vietnam? Democrats. Who faked the Gulf of Tonkin to escalate tensions in Vietnam? Democrats. Who approved to wage war against the newly formed Republic of the Philippines in 1899? Democrats. Pretty much like Iraq, only that it's now the Republicans. Fake WMD to throw out Saddam.

Point is, Democrats aren't saints just as the Republicans aren't saints, yet these two parties love throwing shit at each other.

Point is, Democrats aren't saints just as the Republicans aren't saints, yet these two parties love throwing shit at each other.

First of all, I don't see any one in this thread asserting that Democrats are saints and Republicans are evil.

Second, I don't consider Malkin a garden-variety Republican as I think she represents more the extreme side of the party. But having said that, her political affiliation is not an issue for me in the context of this discussion; all I'm concerned about are her supposed exceptional achievements that uplift and advance mankind, her positive contributions to society, since after all she is featured as a notable Asian-American. However, it doesn't seem like there are any, and when others launch into a tu quoque speech about Democrats being just as bad as Republicans (as if people don't already know), then it becomes even more obvious that there really isn't much to say about Malkin, other than that she's a celebrity blogger with a hunger for fame.

Some of the people that I have admired the most and looked up to are those whose political beliefs are diametrically opposed to mine. I guess some of us are able to appreciate others despite the differences in political beliefs. But for others, however, it's all about political affiliations. Obviously.

Let me try again. So does Malkin possess any redeeming qualities? Charities, causes she support (cure for cancer, sponsoring a child from a third-world country, etc), volunteering activities?

Fil-Ams shine at Creative Emmys
By JULIEN MERCED C. MATABUENA
September 13, 2011, 12:50pm

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/334164/filams-shine-creative-emmys

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American choreographer Napoleon D’umo and Anthony Ocampo were two of the praiseworthy individuals honored at the 2011 Creative Arts Emmys held a few days ago at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California.

D’umo, who shares the Outstanding Choreography award with his wife Tabitha for their routine for “Scars/Fallin’/Outta Your Mind” in reality dance show “So You Think You Can Dance,” recalled telling ABS-CBN North America Bureau in a previous interview, “I don't care if we win, I'm just so happy to be nominated.”

“But when we sat down last time, I grabbed her [Tabitha] hand and I said, 'I think I wanna win,’” D’umo was quoted as saying in an interview posted on abs-cbnnews.com on Sept. 12.

While Ocampo was only a nominee this year for his work as lead visual effects animator for “The Walking Dead,” he had already won a visual effects society award and his first Emmy in 2007 for his work on hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”

An alumnus of the University of the Philippines who immigrated to the States in 2000, Ocampo told ABS-CBN that he credits the training he got here for his success.

“We just love art a lot and we also don't take anything for granted. We push ourselves really hard,” said he.

More, the animator remains grateful despite being unable to bring home the award because of his love for his job and the opportunity to work with the Hollywood industry’s best.

More, the same report enumerated other Fil-Ams who were honored in previous Creative Arts Emmys Awards Night, including visual artist Meliza Fermin and animators Joe Mateo and Jess Epanola.

According to a separate report on “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Tuesday, the annual Creative Arts Emmys’ Awards Night is held a week before the Primetime Emmy Awards, Hollywood’s most prestigious award-giving body for television. The Creative Arts Emmys pays tribute to technical achievements by people working behind the scenes of today's most popular TV series.

Shamcey's 3rd Runner-Up is as Good as First
By BRIAN YALUNG
September 13, 2011, 12:16pm

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/334163/shamceys-3rd-runnerup-good-first

MANILA, Philippines – The Miss Universe 2011 pageant is over and it was Ms. Angola (Leila Lopes) who took home the crown. An obviously overshadowed beauty in the company of exquisite nationalities, Lopes was as surprised as many in taking home the award against the likes of our very own Ms. Shamcey Supsup (Ms. Philippines).

An obvious fan-favorite, Shamcey did her country proud. Supsup barely barged into the round of 16, selected 15th overall which surprised even her.

But to the surprise of her Filipino following, Shamcey managed to go as far as the top 5 which all but delighted the Filipino community with hopes that she may be crowned this year’s Miss Universe 2011.

Supsup got the fans’ second highest score for the Swimsuit and the Evening Gown category which further solicited the admiration of her Filipino followers. The Philippines practically went into a frenzy when she made the elite 5, raising hopes of a Filipina winning the coveted Miss Universe 2011 crown.

Equally impressive was her interview portion. Shamcey was asked:

Question: Are you willing to change your religion just to marry the one you love?

Answer: No. I will not change my religion because the first person I love is God. He is the one who created me. And the principles and values that I have now is because of Him. So if that man loves me, he should also love my God.

Shamcey’s answer was admirable and inspirational but apparently not enough. She settled for 3rd runner-up but nevertheless improved on the previous showing of the Philippines. Miss Universe 2010 bet and now "Umagang Kay Ganda" host Venus Raj finished 4th runner-up last year.

The final order of winners are as follows:
Miss Universe 2011 : Leila Lopes (Angola)
1st Runner-up : Olesya Stefanko (Ukraine)
2nd Runner-up : Priscila Machado (Brazil)
3rd Runner-up : Shamcey Supsup (Philippines)
4th Runner-up : Zilin Luo (China)

Nevertheless, Shamcey’s showing is an accomplishment in its own. Copping 3rd runner-up or 4th place from a batch of 89 beauties from all over the globe is already something that should make every Filipino proud.

The feat is a testament to the beauty of the Filipino with no less than Ms. Shamcey Supsup as the living proof!

I think the very question cost her the title, her understanding of who God is rather shallow based on her reply,..

Is this confirmed? Can we authenticate this with NBC? :) I agree. Ms. Shamcey is a Magna Cum Laude graduate from UP so her spontaneous answer is just natural.

Its all over the internet. Try searching Oprahs statement on Miss Universe 2011 and most pageant sites and blogs carry the item.

I cant confirmed wether its true or not, im still looking for a reliable source.

I think the very question cost her the title, her understanding of who God is rather shallow based on her reply,..

The question asked her was the most difficult because one cannot give a "world peace" answer. It's meant to polarize. How would the judge react if say he or she has a partner of a different faith? Which is more important love of God or love for another person? For Angola, the choice is easier. It's cliche that inner beauty is superior to outer beauty.

^^I never thought this would be an extension of the Beauty Pageants thread.

But yeah, I agree. Her's is the most controversial and most political/religious question among the rest. And to ask that to a Filipina is already something (considering our cultural background/beliefs). It is political in the sense that she have to take sides, which may seem off to some judges. There's just no gray area.

Agree also.

Lea Salonga's question has been asked all over beauty pageants again ang again and everyone knows the perfect answer :)

Pang Miss Barangay level nga daw ang tanong , ayon sa friend ko :ohno:

Though it's been clarified that it wasn't really Lea's question. It was a Miss Universe organizer pre-selected question. Shamcey just had the misfortune of picking the judge assigned with the hardest question. Lea did us proud too!

A street in the "Windy City" has recently been given the honorary name Dr. Jose Rizal Avenue, according to the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago, Illinois.

Consul-General Leo M. Herrera-Lim and Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley led the rededication ceremony last September 10 for Dr. Jose Rizal Avenue, the honorary name for Irving Park Road that which runs from Block 1300W to Block 1400W in Chicago.

Also attending the ceremony were two descendants of Rizal - Dr. Ramon G. Lopez and Willi Buhay, as well as Alderman Amaya Pawar, who represents the 47th Ward of Chicago.

The rededication of the street as Rizal Avenue was part of the various activities in the City of Chicago to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Philippine national hero. Other upcoming events include Philippine story-telling sessions at Chicago public libraries, screenings of films about Rizal and donation of Rizal's famous novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo to various colleges.

The world premiere of Rizal's Sweet Stranger the Musical (Untold Stories of Josephine Bracken), a contemporary musical theater production by Anton Juan will be held at the St. Scholastica Academy Theater in Chicago on September 23.

A Rizal monument can even be found at 4739 N. Marine Drive, Chicago.

Meanwhile, Quigley and Pawar also met members of the Filipino-American community at the Rizal Heritage Center, which is located at 1332 W. Irving Park Road.

In a speech at the event, Herrera-Lim emphasized the aspiration and dreams of Rizal to his beloved country. He also campaigned for the SAVE Our Industries Act, which hopes to save jobs in the US textile and Philippine apparel industries.

Quigley said he will consider the proposed bill. The SAVE Act would allow for apparel products manufactured in the Philippines using US-made products to enter the US duty free.

Philippine teams shine in 8th International Math Olympiad

By Juan Escandor Jr.
Bicol Mail

Garnering two gold medals in Science and another four gold medals in Math, Philippine (PH) teams made a sterling performance in the 8th International Math and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held here from Sept. 3-6.

Simon L. Chua, president of Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) of the Philippines, said the performance of the Filipino students in the competition had been very satisfactory compared to last year’s.

The PH teams have also clinched five silver medals and 21 bronze medals in Science while seven silver medals and 17 bronze medals in Math.

A trophy was awarded to gold medalist Raphael Villaluz of the Philippine-National Capital Region (NCR) team for Best in Experiment in the Science category.

Last year, the Philippine team garnered one gold, two silver and eight bronze medals in Math while in Science, one silver medal and 10 bronze medals in the 7th IMSO held in Indonesia.

China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand attended the 8th IMSO but only 12 participated in the competition because Nepal came as observer. There were 278 primary students listed as final contestants.

The competition, though represented by teams in which PH teams comprised of NCR, Provincial, Naga and Region IVA, awards the overall champion trophy to individual contestants.

“There are cut-off scores for gold, silver and bronze medals. Those contestants whose scores are higher than 71.5 are proclaimed gold medalists. The one who got the highest score is declared the overall champion,” Chua said.

For this year’s overall champion, Shane Tan and Dylan Toh Shan Hong, all from Singapore team, won the Science and Math trophies, respectively.

Singapore team got five gold medals, one silver medal in Science. One gold medal, and five silver medals in Math.

Other countries with gold medals include Thailand, three; Sri Lanka, two and Indonesia, one for Science while in Math, Thailand got another three; China, three; Taiwan, two; and Indonesia, one.

One of the gold medalists in Math of Naga team is 11-year-old Errol John Suarez who hails from Legazpi City and a grade six student of Bicol University Laboratory School.

Suarez has been joining international Math competitions in Australia, Bali, Indonesia, China and Singapore where he got his first gold medal this year. He got his second gold medal here Monday night.

He said he completed an after-class training in college Math in Legazpi City when he was seven years old then enrolled for training with the MTG, and started competing internationally.

Other Filipino gold medalists were from Philippines-NCR team which include Christian Philip Gelera for Science and Farrel Eldrian Wu, Sedrick Scott Keh and Clyde Wesley Ang for Math.

“The kids have worked hard for this. I take my hats off to all the teachers who have trained these kids. I’ve seen them grow through the years. I’ve seen them with nothing when we started and now they come up with the gold,” said Prof. Luisa Villano, of Merriam College and one of the jurors in the IMSO for the past eight years.

Villano said they announced the winners based on the numbers of contestants without giving the names of the country to make the checking of test results objective.

She said that in the process of checking they also have to break a lot of ties and then rank them accordingly.

Joseph S. Wee, member of MTG, said all countries were represented in the panel of jurors who checked the exams given to the contestants of IMSO.

Chua revealed that the number of participating countries in the 8th IMSO is more than last year’s which was held in Indonesia with only nine countries participating.

He said China and South Korea joined the IMSO for the first time here while Hongkong, which had been joining the competition in Indonesia skipped this year, citing the hostage debacle in Quirino Grandstand as the reason.

Chua recalled that the IMSO has been initiated by the Indonesian government as Asian Math and Science Olympiad but through the years many more countries were joining.

“With a growing number of countries outside of Southeast Asia wanting to join, they changed it to International Math and Science Olympiad,” he said.

Chua said IMSO is affiliated with international Math competitions Philippine Board of Studies handling the international competition for science scholastic competition affiliated with an Australian group.

He said the IMSO jurors provide new innovative questions which have not been used in other Math and Science competitions in other countries which he said help improve curricula of the subjects.
