View Full Version : Los Angeles Ranked 10th Tallest Skyline in the World by this Website
i_am_hydrogen August 16th, 2005, 09:40 AM Take a look at http://ultrapolisproject.com/ultrapolis_017.htm, which ranked LA's skyline as the 10th tallest in the world. Pretty impressive but not unexpected. The next time people diss LA's skyline, now you'll have some extra ammunition. ;)
lowcostgeography August 16th, 2005, 09:57 AM whcih is cool, but it sucks that LA gets schooled by houston though...
Vidiot August 16th, 2005, 10:22 AM Los Angeles does pretty well on this list considering that it is the tallest skyline in the world that sits on top of a marked area having a high to very high earthquake hazard. Many people forget why Los Angeles' skyline isn't taller than its potential height..
latennisguy August 16th, 2005, 06:38 PM I am embarrassed. why? why?!
This is why:

I don't think that Houston's skyline schools L.A.'s. I think they are pretty close in terms of number of highrises and height of those highrises. Actually, L.A. edges Houston, according to emporis. However, as was metioned in another post, L.A. sits on a fault line, and L.A. will never have a supertall skyline. The downtown area will densify with more lowrise buldings (30-40 stories). I think there are about 15 projects currently in the works.
LosAngelesSportsFan August 16th, 2005, 08:58 PM actually about 55 projects from 15 - 55 stories.

i dont think so either..but it does in terms of these rankings. Also, I didnt realize the eiffel tower was as tall as the US Bank Tower
latennisguy August 16th, 2005, 10:57 PM I know it was a very long time ago, but didn't "Donald" propose a supertall in Los Angeles once? I think he wanted it in Century City, but the city wanted it built in Downtown, so therefore it fell through the "cracks", so to speak. I think, that with todays technology, it isn't impossible to build a supertall in downtown. Is it?
samsonyuen August 17th, 2005, 12:24 AM Strange, I think LA's skyline is grossly underrated. I also never noticed how much the ten highest in LA are so (relatively) evenly heighted.

Man, If you are in LA so you will love LA skyline.
Facial August 17th, 2005, 12:38 AM I think LA's skyline is grossly underrated.
Oh, absolutely.
Jealousy across Skyscrapercity is intense, since we are the movie capital of the world and have some of the world's best Mediterranean climates.
So they want to diss our skyline.
BUT at least this list silences the Seattle ravers! :hahaha::hahaha::hahaha:

He was going to build it on the site of the Ambassador hotel in Mid wilshire, a couple of miles from Downtown, byt the City used Eminent Domain and took the property to build a high school and middle school, which should start construction soon.
I think the Donald will come to LA soon (he is already making inroads in LA with his new golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes) and i think he is going to build a couple residentials here. my bet is that when LA Live, Metropolis and Grand Ave break ground, he will be next. i dont see why he wouldnt if the market is still going like it is.

Give it time...we are a young city...eventually we will be the second city of skyscrapers too! :)
chicagogeorge August 17th, 2005, 01:37 AM Give it time...we are a young city...eventually we will be the second city of skyscrapers too! :)
Good luck,
Chicago has more skyscrapers than L.A., Houston, Dallas, San Fransisco, San Diego, Oakland, San Jose, and Sacramento combined.
L.A. is more than 1000 skyscrapers behind Chicago. Chcago has 145 projects slated to be completed within the next few years. Los Angeles has 55. Lets see, at this rate L.A. will be second in skyscrapers hmm.....never.
Don't forget those pesky faultlines that make highrise developers a bit nervous.
Nice try Silverlake.
latennisguy August 17th, 2005, 01:37 AM I sure hope so. L.A. does need more skyscraper "infill". I hope when I come back from school -3 yrs tops- a lot of the projects will be done.
I'm still amazed at how small our US Bank Tower is when compared to other cities big guns. Too bad about the fault lines, because L.A. is definitely a place where bigger is better. I'd love to see something bigger and better than the US Bank Tower (hate the name, btw).
lowcostgeography August 17th, 2005, 02:25 AM was the US Bank Tower formerly named the Arco tower?
Jules August 17th, 2005, 02:55 AM Give it time...we are a young city...eventually we will be the second city of skyscrapers too! :)
Give me a break. :ohno:
LA's a nice city with a great skyline, but do you honestly think it will ever compare to Chicago's? :sleepy: :weirdo:
Vangelist August 17th, 2005, 03:03 AM US Bank Tower (hate the name, btw). - just call it the Library Tower, as many still do
and who knows maybe we will be 2nd, if not 1st someday. what if a gigantic terrorist attack / the bubonic plague destroyed everything east of the mississippi ? or space aliens demolished it? you never know !
latennisguy August 17th, 2005, 03:54 AM my my... what happy thoughts.
was the US Bank Tower formerly named the Arco tower?
Not that I'm aware of. It was previously known as The Library Tower. Frankly, I like that a lot better.
latennisguy August 17th, 2005, 04:12 AM look at how small our buildings look compared with the Sears Tower.

Chi_Coruscant August 17th, 2005, 05:23 AM Give it time...we are a young city...eventually we will be the second city of skyscrapers too! :)
LA will match Chicago's skyline in about.........thousand years. :)
Imperfect Ending August 17th, 2005, 05:27 AM LA can function without skyscrapers though.
LosAng August 17th, 2005, 06:19 AM Give it time...we are a young city...eventually we will be the second city of skyscrapers too! :)who really cares...bottom line more people like livin in Los Angeles more than chicago ....thats why Los Angeles passed Chicagos population decades ago
vicecityguy August 17th, 2005, 10:21 PM ^ Yeah, but so do the rest of the towers in Chicago... next to the Sears Tower.
vicecityguy August 17th, 2005, 10:25 PM Surprised at the level of animosity towards LA when all someone did was mention that one day LA will eventually be the second city of skyscrapers too. Nobody mentioned Chicago... I think they were referring to a category of cities with skyscrapers. I'm guessing most of those Chicago trolls must have small dicks and have only their skylines to justify their manhood.
Chi_Coruscant, I think you are right... in 1000 years LA will surpass Chicago in a big way. Thanks for the props!
samsonyuen August 17th, 2005, 10:40 PM I didn't realize they were so much smaller than the Sears Tower, but I don't think it matters, they are in proportion to each other.
SILVERLAKE August 17th, 2005, 10:43 PM LA looks eviler with sears
THat photo is probably out of proportion. And LA never want to look eviler. We are city of Angels not hog butchers for the world.
vicecityguy August 17th, 2005, 11:32 PM even if that photo was in proportion, I would rather see LA with more 20 to 40 story buildings than one ugly sears tower... man that thing is ugly! Libary Tower is much more pleasing to look at.
latennisguy August 18th, 2005, 12:02 AM THat photo is probably out of proportion
Not by much. It's the same as this picture:

it's about right.

CarsonCaliBrotha August 18th, 2005, 02:12 AM To the people who say LA will surpass Chi-Town in 1,000 years: That is, if we don't totally destroy the world or Jesus comes back by then. And the way things are going now, I doubt LA will surpass Chicago.
vicecityguy August 18th, 2005, 02:27 AM I doubt LA will surpass Chicago.

No, Silverlake was not reffering to a category of skyscrapers. It is clearly evident as to what he was insinuating.
I think that Silverlake's statement is ridiculous to say the least. He constantly attacks Chicago, at times blantently, at other times subtle. I just posted some information comparing the highrise developement of the two cities. I have no animosity towards L.A., in fact I think it's the greatest city west of the Mississippi, and truly a world class city of mega imoprtance.
I would suggest you put your little dick measuring stick away.

Ok, so you like to measure rather large shlongs. Good for you.
Regardless, I did not attack him, nor did I make a snyde remark about L.A. I just stated the obvious. L.A. may surpass Chicago in other categories (population), skyline is not one of them.

Anyways... that photo of LA with the Sears tower looks good!

i_am_hydrogen August 18th, 2005, 09:18 AM I didn't start this thread in order to see it devolve into a pissing match between Chicago and Los Angeles. But I've meant to drop by & give you all my respect, since I normally just read this forum so I can find the two mentioned forummer's posts for a few laughs. :)

RIDCULOUS. WHO WOULD HAVE BELIEVED THAT A SMALL CITY OF A 100 THOUSAND IN 1900 WOULD GO ON TO BE A MEGA CITY OF 18,000,000 JUST 100 YEARS LATER. WHAT OTHER FIRST WORLD ALPHA CITY CAN CLAIM THAT GROWTH. IF I WOULD HAVE SAID THAT IN 1900, YOU WOULD SAY RIDICULOUS.

I agree. Not really an attack of LA. The skyline is just a skyline. Nice for a postcard, but it doesn't really mean anything other than how many tall buildings a city has. It doesnt say anything about a city other than it likes tall buildings.
chicagogeorge August 19th, 2005, 05:06 PM RIDCULOUS. WHO WOULD HAVE BELIEVED THAT A SMALL CITY OF A 100 THOUSAND IN 1900 WOULD GO ON TO BE A MEGA CITY OF 18,000,000 JUST 100 YEARS LATER. What does this have to do with your previous comment? Chicago went from 90,000 in 1860 to 10 million today. What does this have to do with highrise construction? You think somehow developers are going to rush to downtown L.A. and start building highrises because there 18 million people in the Greater Metro? Are they going to forget about the low ceiling zoning, the fact that there are hundreds of fault lines underneath the city? I don't mean that highrises wont be built, but again small in numbers compared to other cities in North America. Miami, New York, Chicago, Toronto, all have over 150 projects currently in the works. According to the Emporis website, Los Angeles has 26 building proposed 7 currently under construction, and 5 approved for construction.
Since you mentioned L.A. being an "Alpha" city, which it truly is, here is how New York, L.A., and Chicago score in the Alpha rankings in terms of global connectiveness:
New York City: 61895
Chicago: 39025
Los Angeles: 38009
