Inspired by the thread, "Best looking towns in Ontario," lets post some pictures of CBD's of Ontario town's under or around 100,000.

I'll start with Whitby, where I live. Population 110,000.

Photos coming soon of Uptown Waterloo- a downtown much different from other Ontario downtowns in its healthiness and vitality, and its centrepiece, the Waterloo Town Square development. As well, new quality office and apartment complexes are popping up all the time now.

I'll get right on it! *Begins searching through selection of Waterloo photos*

Thunder Bay has 3 CBDs.. One is the former downtown Port Arthur, the other is the former downtown Fort William, and the last is the Intercity district, the main CBD. It's basically a 6 mile stretch along Hodder/Cumberland/Water/Fort William/Simpson Streets and Algoma/Memorial/May streets (the names change because they were in different cities when they were named) between Arundel street in Current River and Walsh street in Fort William. The main CBD according to the city is Intercity but it's just malls and power centres so I'll focus on what is, IMO, the most picturesue downtown in Northern Ontario (out of the big 10 anyway), Downtown 'Heart of the Harbour', the former Port Arthur core.

The Marina at the end of Red River Road, this was taken from the pedestrian overpass infront of the Prince Arthur Hotel.

Another angle, that is a mast set up in memorial of the wars. The flags have been taken down for the winter. That picture is from mid June I think.

The government fought so har to have this thing built, saying "oh, 200 busloads of people will come every day!!1" well, 95% of its patrons are local, and 95% of it's profits go to southern Ontario. Yeah, we're thrilled. :sleepy:

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/4854/downtownportarthuroldbmodetail.jpg
Across from the Casino is the Prospector Steakhouse, one of the city's many fine eateries. It's located in the old Bank Of Montreal building. This is a corner shot, enhanced in irfanview to make the colours stick out :P

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/9861/downtownportarthurprincearthur.jpg
Up Cumberland Street is the Prince Arthur Hotel, one of the city's most famous hotels. It was built in 1910 and was originally owned by CN

http://img485.imageshack.us/img485/4692/downtownportarthurmaudslaycour.jpg
On Court Street is one of the city's oldest "tall" apartments, Maudley Court. It's kinda creepy looking because it's old, but I hear the interior is nice.

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/4026/downtownportarthurwhalenbuildi.jpg
The Lakehead's first 'Skyscraper'; the Whalen Building, now known as the Thunder Bay Hydro Building or PUC Building was built in 1913. It's only 8 storeys tall but it still manages to tower over everything in the downtown core, since out of the downtown proper, it's the tallest building.

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/1879/downtownportarthurportarthurco.jpg
Heading up Red River Road you see the Port Arthur Collegiate Institute, which is set to close this year. :( It was built as a jail in 1913 and becamse a high school in the 1920s. It's at the western end of Waverly Park, which has trees almost 120 years old. Across from Waverly Park is Magnus Theatre, and across from Waverly Park are a few old churches.

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/370/downtownportarthurstpaulsunite.jpg
Also built in 1913, St Pauls United Church is a prominent feature in the Port Arthur skyline (we really dont ahve any tall buildings.) It's one of the biggest churchs in the city, with a giant hall and a 5 storey apartment branching off it's east wing. (I have pics but they're not that important)

http://img485.imageshack.us/img485/7711/downtownportarthurhouse9dm.jpg
Nearby is this house, which I thought looked pretty. :)

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/6056/downtownportarthurwaverlyparkt.jpg
Waverly Park Towers, at 17 storeys is the city's tallest building. It's at the westernmost end of the downtown area, and is built on a hill, so it towers above the city. The view from the top is AMAZING, as you're about 90metres above the city itself.

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/4474/downtownportarthurwaverlyparkt1.jpg
Another view of Waverly Park poking through some trees.

And last..

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/5788/portarthur56vs.png

A panorama of the north end, taken September 11th, it was really smoggy that day. I had never seen that much smog in my life, so I took the oppurtunity to take that picture. The quality sucks because I used some crappy program that came with my camera, and my camera isnt that good in the first place! :P

Our buildings aren't as old and our downtown isn't as vibrant as it once was, but the north end is really nice, and safe compared to the south end. I'll have some pics of the south end once the snow melts, so mid may or so. :)

/\ Good pics Vid! It looks beautiful up there!

I wish I had pics of Leamington... it's got a pretty nice downtown that seems to be booming for such a small town. Population 29,000 or so... looks like the downtown of a city with at least 45,000.

Holy crap! I almost mistook that building in 'Trillium' for St. Lawrence Hall. Very imprerssive. There's a lot of charming architecture that's been preserved in these 'smaller' Ontario towns. I'm going to have to go on a road trip this summer!

BTW, vid, Thunder Bay looks nice! It has a lot of historic buildings, I like that house. Too bad the money made in that casino goes to SOUTHERN ONTARIO! WTF! Make a new province and have Thunder Bay be the capital or have northern Ontario become part of Manitoba.

Waterloo CBD:

http://files.photojerk.com/andrewharv/uptownwaterloogates.JPG

Waterloo's CBD is completely unlike any other in Ontario.

I may have left alot out, but I suppose over time I can add more information... either way here is Uptown Waterloo in photographs, with quickly typed-up descriptions. Few people know what Uptown Waterloo looks like and it's going through some massive changes, so get ready for a pleasant surprise or two. On any given night in this one of a few technology capitals of the world, one can see a movie, eat out, shop in hip and popular stores, listen to live jazz, go to an improv workshop that costs a loonie, see a play, walk in the park, go to a science seminar, play hockey or go for a run on the indoor track, stroll in tasteful neighbourhoods- Uptown Waterloo is really coming alive!

Seagrams Lands:
Consists of loft apartments, a high-end restaurant, swanky commercial space, and prominent organizations on a brownfield site. Reclaimed brick is the rule here, and there is more to come, as empty space is slowly filled.

http://files.photojerk.com/andrewharv/23sm11.JPG

Regina Street:
A modern street that was previously residential, Regina Street’s south end has become a very attractively designed area with much planting in the spring and summertime, with nice sidewalks, large windows everywhere, and city offices as well as regional health offices housed in timeless and attractive brick edifices. The street feels great, though there is almost no retail on the ground floors of these blocks. On the other end of the street further north, however, it breaks down into a Yorkville-style converted-homes type of street.

http://files.photojerk.com/andrewharv/BIA1.jpg

King Street and Willis Way:
You guessed it- King St. is the name of our main downtown street. This thriving retail strip has a strong BIA working in its favour and has been inspired by downtown Oakville. There are currently two very large office and retail buildings being constructed on King St., where a large parking lot was located just one year ago. With this gap soon filled, we will now have a proper main street.

Princess Street, Albert Street, Dorset Street:
Princess St. comes off of King St., and has many older buildings. The police station, public library, and Habitat for Humanity offices are located in this part of Uptown as well as numerous offices. A terraced luxury apartment project was just completed and a residential/office development right next door is on the way.

Father David Bauer Drive:
This road links the Seagram Lands to the northernmost edge of Uptown Waterloo. The Waterloo Recreation Complex, famous Perimeter Institute, Waterloo Park, and modern Clay and Glass Gallery are all located here. The Canbar Lands are soon to become a massive downtown residential neighbourhood.
