Comic book to teach dharma

Well-known monk Phra Phayom Kalayano is launching a comic book that depicts himself as a leading novice character promoting the values of dharma. The abbot of Wat Suan Kaew temple in Nonthaburi said the comic Nen Phayom Jom Yoong (Novice Phayom, the Little Rascal), targeted young readers aged from 12-18. The comic, dealing with subject matter easily identifiable by teens, would help wean them off undesirable habits such as sex, gambling, drugs and even addiction to video games.

``The idea is to get the young focused on dharma,'' he said.

Phra Phayom, made popular by his unconventional dharma teaching style, said the comic book would attract readers through its simple, relevant and light-hearted dharma content.

The abbot said he chose the time when he was ordained as a teenage novice for the main character because he was going after a young audience.

Phra Phayom said most youngsters were instructed to visit his temples to study dharma. They rarely came by choice and so the comic would provide the temple with a new channel to convey the message of dharma in a more entertaining way.

He conceded that Novice Phayom might not always be as reserved and solemn as is expected of the Buddhist clergy.

``Being a rascal here has a constructive meaning. It's about getting involved and not being indifferent to misdeeds. It doesn't mean stirring up trouble or poking one's nose where it doesn't belong,'' he said.

The official launch of the comic is set for Oct 7 at Chulalongkorn University.

Somboon Itchayavorakul, CEO of Watta Classifieds Co which publishes the book, said putting together the comic took time and a team of professional cartoonists.
