Bangkok is one of the real and the ideal place for shopping and flirting around the clock :)
Krung Thep is the short form, longest name of the city in the world
Can go to >>>>>>>>>>>>> (http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=140554) More know about the land of smile to revealing how exciting for this ;)
Kalix August 26th, 2005, 02:01 AM i wish Khaosan Rd. could be more organized than this. ppl can barely walk on the pedestrian cuz those stalls take all the space from us.
why not just convert it to a "real" walking street??..oops, prolly it won't work neither cuz the stalls will expand their business there and turn it to shit again...grrrr
Isan August 27th, 2005, 10:04 AM Maybe Bangkok is planned for building some underground walking street alongside to MRTA
Just resemble as Japan and Taipei in Asia that convenience and shopping around the clock without hassle free from hot ;)
I must do appreciate to the walking street at Downtown Toronto especially where we are in severe cold winter
Jo August 27th, 2005, 01:39 PM what's the difference between Krung Thep and Bangkok?
Bangkok (translating as 'village of wild plums') was the original site for the capital city and was located west of the Chao Phraya river (in modern day Thonburi). In 1782, King Rama I decided to move to a more defensible site and moved across the river to found his new capital, Krung Thep. For whatever reason, foreigners have never since caught up with the name change and the old name of Bangkok has stuck. In recent years, Krung Thep/Bangkok has expanded at such a fast rate that it now sprawls over a huge mass of land on both the sides of the Chao Phraya and has engulfed the once independent Thonburi.

BODYholic August 27th, 2005, 09:47 PM Bangkok comes from the word 'Bang Makok' which the meaning has been explained by Jo. The actual 'Bang Makok' is only a small portion of the current Bangkok.
Krungthep or Krungthep Mahanakhon is the short form of the official name of the current Bangkok City in Pasar Thai. Again, details can be found fm the link posted by Jo.

Isan October 6th, 2005, 11:21 PM Toys ``R'' Us sees good prospects in Thailand
SUKANYA JITPLEECHEEP
The world's largest children's product chain, Toys ``R'' Us, is staking out a new frontier in Thailand as part of its plan to become the dominant toy retailer in Asia. Three outlets are planned initially in Bangkok, at Central Bang Na, CentralWorld and Carrefour Rama IV. They will be run by Toy Retailing (Thailand) Co, a marketing arm of the Li & Fung Group, a major Asian trading company.
``We have conducted market research for three years and found that there is more room for Toys ``R'' Us to grow in the estimated four-billion-baht Thailand toy industry. One reason is that these days, parents are willing to spend on educational toys to help their children develop skills and learning,'' said a Li & Fung executive who asked not to be named.
As well, he said, the chain had no direct competitors in the market as toys locally were sold mainly in corners of department stores.
Thailand is the fifth market in the region selected by Toys ``R'' Us, after Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. The company also plans further expansion in mainland China, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries.
The executive said the first branch of Toys ``R'' Us with 1,800 square metres space, will be opened on the sixth floor at Central Bang Na on Dec 8.
The investment for the first store is expected to be about 100 million baht. It will carry about 10,000 product items.
Currently, there are 35 Toys ``R'' Us outlets in three formats (main store, Toy Box and Express) in the Asia-Pacific region. Nine are in Hong Kong, six in Singapore, seven in Malaysia and 13 in Taiwan.
``Our aim is to be the most preferred shopping destination for toys, babies' and children's lifestyle products in Asia,'' the executive said.
Weerarat Kijlertphairoj, assistant managing director of Dream Toy Co, the local distributor and marketer of Bandai toys, welcomed the presence of the US giant, which Bandai would contract as a new distribution channel.
Mr Weerarat said the overall toy market in Thailand had been growing by 5-10% annually over the past five years. Growth has been slower than expected because the birth rate is declining and parents have become more discerning in their purchases. As well, there are more alternatives competing for children's attention, notably computers and digital games.
However, he said the popularity of toys based on popular TV and movie characters remained strong.
Bandai's most recent offering, the Masked Rider Faiz collection based on a Japanese TV series, has proved popular with sales of 1,000 Masked Rider belts in the first month.
Krit Sakulpanich, managing director of Dream Express (Dex) Co, the rights holder for the Masked Rider Faiz series, said the company expected that the new products from the series would record sales of 10 million baht in their first year.

Six Toys ‘R’ Us stores in year 1
Published on October 12, 2005
http://www.toysrus.co.uk/images/tru/logo.gif
US giant eyes 13 local outlets within five years. Toys “R” Us, the world’s largest toy retail chain, will open six stores in Bangkok over the next 12 months. Pieter Schats, chief executive of Toys “R” Us Asia Ltd, said the company would launch three major retail formats in Thailand: Toys “R” Us flagship, satellite and convenience stores. The number of stores will likely grow to as many as 13 in the next three to five years. The company is aiming high and expects sales of Bt500 million in its first year in business here.
“I’m delighted that Toys “R” Us is opening in Thailand and believe that Thai children will really enjoy the unique ‘Wow’ experience that Toys “R” Us brings to each of its stores,” said Schats. “We believe we’ll be successful in the development of the Bangkok investment portfolio over the next 12 months.” He said that the first Bt60-million Toys “R” Us satellite store in Bangkok will be opened on the sixth floor of the Central City Bang Na shopping complex in November, with retail space of 1,978 square metres. A second store will be opened in December on the first floor of the Carrefour super centre on Rama IV Road and will have a total retail space of 1,124 square metres.
The company also plans to open its first Toys “R” Us flagship store in Bangkok in the middle of next year at Central World Plaza on Rajdamri Road. Located on the fifth floor of the complex, the store will boast 2,268 square metres of retail space and will cost at least Bt80 million to build. Each convenience stores (under the moniker Toy Box or Toys “R” Us Express) will have 800 square metres of retail space.
“Parents usually bring their children to our Toys “R” Us ‘destination’ stores [flagship or satellite stores] for special occasions like a birthday, while our convenience store format will serve them for routine shopping,” Schats said.
Toys “R” Us will divide its toy merchandise into seven major zones: boys, girls, family fun and games, learning, babies and toddlers, electronics, and sports and outdoors. The stores will carry more than 10,000 items across 500 categories of toys, more than half of which are exclusive to Toys “R” Us.
According to Schats, Toys “R” Us will hold a media conference in the Philippines today to launch its toy store chain there later this year. The company will also enter China in 2006 or early 2007.
He said that the company aims to open more than 50 Toys “R” Us stores in Asia (excluding Japan) by the end of 2007. The company currently operates 36 outlets in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Thailand will be the fifth country in the region to have Toys “R” Us stores.
Jeremy Hobbins, group managing director of Li & Fung (Retailing), which is licensed to operate and develop the stores in Asia, said that his Hong Kong-based company has three distinct operations: trading and marketing logistics, consumer products manufacturing, and speciality retailing.
In Thailand, Li & Fung acquired trading firm Inchcape in 1995. The group also acquired Borneo Co and Anglo Thai Co in 1999, making it one of the largest trading and supply-chain management outfits in the Kingdom. The group has a large distribution centre and logistics facility at Bang Pa In in Ayutthaya.
“Our strong foothold in trading and logistics in Thailand will help the Toys “R” Us business here for local sourcing of toy merchandise in Thailand,” said Hobbins. He added that about 15 per cent of the merchandise at Toys “R” Us stores in Thailand would be locally made.
Manit Lertsakornsiri, country manager of Toys Retailing (Thailand) Ltd, said that the company would open no less than 13 stores in Thailand over the next three to five years.
“We also expect to generate sales of over Bt500 million in the first year,” said Manit.

Ozone October 25th, 2005, 07:29 AM I don't like Secon Centre very much. But I think it has an “ all you can eat” Japanese (Nipon) restaurant there? I think that was the only reason I went there which was funny. My friend ate too much and vomited. :-?

Isan December 9th, 2005, 12:07 PM Thailand opens biggest shopping mall, eyeing Asian shopping tourists
http://sg.yimg.com/xp/afp/20051209/2665781969.jpg
An upscale mall claiming to be the largest in Southeast Asia has opened its doors, with everything from burgers to yachts on offer as Bangkok aims to beat out Singapore as a shopper's paradise.
The 15-billion-baht (366-million-dollars) Siam Paragon, covering 500,000 square meters (5.3 million square feet), adds to a growing stretch of high-end retailers around Bangkok's Siam Center, already crowded with boutiques for the likes of Prada and Gucci.
"We want Siam Paragon to be a global tourist destination like Times Square in New York," Kriengsak Tantiphipop, chief marketing officer of Siam Paragon Development Co., told reporters.
"Siam Paragon is working with the customs department to turn the complex into a duty-free zone where consumers, both foreigners and locals, could receive tax refunds for any goods they purchase. The process will be complete within a few month," he said.
Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Juthamas Siriwan said the opening of Siam Paragon was a big boost for tourism, which accounts for six percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
"It will definitely boost the economy as it encourages tourists to spend more money," the governor said, adding that shopping alone accounts for nearly 30 percent of Thailand's total tourism revenue.
Catering to tourists and affluent consumers with a monthly income of over 30,000 baht, the mall features an auto gallery for Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche, as well as luxury yachts.
Some 300 hi-fashion brands have boutiques, including French luxury brand Chanel and Italy's Dolce and Gabbana.
Its vast food court features popular international food chains including McDonalds as well as pricier fare from swank Bangkok restaurants.
The mall expects to receive more than 100,000 visitors a day, with sales projected at 10 billion baht in its first year.
In addition to the mall, the complex includes Siam Ocean World, an aquarium that includes 30,000 creatures from 400 species around the world.
Paragon also has an 1,800-seat opera house, a 15-screen cinema with seating for 5,500 people and a bowling alley.
Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the second daughter of Thailand's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, attended the opening ceremony along with over 1,000 VIP guests including ambassadors and local celebrities.
The opening of Siam Paragon is the latest in a series of developments in Bangkok aimed at attracting more Asian shopping tourists from rivals Singapore and Hong Kong, said Kriengsak.

...snipped ...
This is really flattered. :)
Personally, I find Thai customer service is a lot better than that of Singapore's. After all, it is called Land of Smiles not for nothing.
And as a Thailand visiting tourist, it makes no difference for us whether it is the biggest mall in SEA or around the world. Most international brands found in Thailand can be found almost anywhere else but not at the same service level. So frankly, it is just another shopping centre ard the block.
nevertheless, it is always the friendly Thai people that keep us coming back to your country.
Congratulations to the grand opening of Siam Paragon!

WOW if its is truly duty-free shopping, it will turbo charge the center and really compete with all shopping centers :)

I think Siam Paragon will be more special than any other highend shopping malls found in other cities like HK or Singaprore cause it's got a Thai craft section, the aquarium, the opera house and many of that highend brands have bigger size boutiques.

Only bus and long tail boat would be reaching to above Mall
