From aesthetic point of view, the kithenette doesn't seems to blend well with the living room. It could be the angle that we are looking. My 1st impression was that this is more like a service apartment (eg Saladang Place or Evergreen in Bangkok) rather than someting coming fm a 5* Hotel.

Still prefer Thai design ... anytime.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has signed definitive agreements to acquire the Le Meridien brand and all related management and franchise business for the brand’s more than 130 hotels and resorts.

Separately, affiliates of Lehman Brothers and Starwood Capital Group Global LLC are forming a joint venture which is expected to acquire the owned and leased hotel portfolio of Le Meridien.

Closing of the brand purchase transaction is subject to certain significant terms and conditions including completion of employee consultations and the closing of the real estate sale. Subject to satisfying the conditions to closing, the deal would close towards the end of the third quarter at which time Starwood Hotels & Resorts would assume control of the Le Meridien brand.

Available until 30th September 2005, The Oriental, Bangkok is offering a “One Night at The Oriental” package for Thai residents priced at THB 11,999 on a double occupancy basis.

The package includes the following:

- Basically it is a very nice boutique hotel with tastesfully done Thai style ID.
- However, being at Suriwong also means poorer air quality. The pool looks beautiful but not the air.
- Unless you are paying for a more expensive room. Chances are that your windows open into next building's kitchen.

Accor is launching its Residence brand in Asia with two luxury apartment complexes opening next year along Bangkok’s prime Sukhumvit Road area.

Park Avenue, Sofitel Residence will open on Sukhumvit Soi 6 in early 2006 with 386 guest rooms and apartments. It will feature two restaurants, one all day dining outlet and one specialty restaurant, one bar, a patisserie and deli, swimming pool, large Spa complex and ballroom with five additional meeting rooms.

The boutique-style Asoke, Sofitel Residence on Sukhumvit Soi 19 is also scheduled to open early 2006 with 80 studio and one-bedroom apartments. It will have a fine dining restaurant and bar catering to in-house guests, swimming pool, fitness centre and Sofitel library off the reception area.

Accor Managing Director Asia Pacific, Michael Issenberg, said the Residence label would specifically cater to the fast growing serviced apartment sector that is rapidly expanding around Asia.

The Chaophya Park Hotel, Bangkok, celebrated its 12th anniversary with the completion of a major refurbishment project that has been ongoing the past 2 years. Work has now been completed on all Superior Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, Business Deluxe Rooms and two new Executive Floors and lounge. The cost of the renovation is over Bt 100 million (approximately US $ 2.5 million).

Accor to open Three Ibis Hotels in Bangkok, Thailand

Accor is to launch its Ibis economy hotel brand in Bangkok with three hotels in key commercial areas.

The 189-room Ibis Siam Bangkok is five-minutes from the popular Pratunam shopping area with convenient access to the Victory Monument BTS Skytrain station, while the 288-room Ibis Huamark Bangkok is near Ramkamheng University and the Huamark Stadium. As with all Ibis hotels, they will offer one bar and one restaurant.

The 150-room Ibis Fenix Bangkok is located off busy Sukhumvit Road on Soi 11 near popular pubs, restaurants and entertainment outlets. It is also near the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, the BTS Skytrain station and recently opened Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit underground system. The hotel will also offer a gym and meeting facilities.

The first two Ibis hotels are scheduled to open in January 2006, with Ibis Fenix Bangkok expected to open late 2006.

All three hotels will feature a contemporary design with advanced communications technology and 24 hour reception.

Commenting on the Ibis brand launch in Thailand, Accor Asia Pacific Managing Director, Michael Issenberg, said that most new hotels under construction in Bangkok were aimed at the top-end of the market. Very few were being designed to cater for the fastest growing market – the economy sector.

“The Ibis brand will fill a clear market need as Thailand’s domestic and regional market grows, especially with the rapid increase in low-cost air carriers servicing Bangkok,” said Mr Issenberg.

“Each hotel is located in an established commercial, entertainment or shopping district. This combined with the attractive Ibis rate structure will make them popular with business travellers during the week, and leisure travellers during weekends.” he added.

it is described that in 1965 "Baan Thai" opened as a restaurant serving fine cuisine with traditional Thai dance performances with guests such as royalty from Sweden, Denmark and Japan as well as Jackie Kennedy, Tiger Woods and many other celebrities :)

this is the type of place alot of my foreign friends would greatly appreciate and luv because of its heritage and presentment of wonderful Thai culture (even more than larger places like the Shangri-La, JW Marriott or Westin) :okay: ...

Accor to manage New Ibis Hotel on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok

Accor is to manage a new hotel in Bangkok the Ibis Fenix Bangkok, scheduled to open late 2006. The owners Fenatex International Co Ltd are also committed to developing two more Ibis hotels in Bangkok over the next two years.

Ibis Fenix Bangkok will open on Sukhumvit Soi 11, known for trendy dinning, fun pubs, and modern entertainment outlets. It is also near the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, the BTS Skytrain station and the Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit underground system.

The hotel will offer guests one restaurant, bar, gym, swimming pool and meeting facilities.

Fenatex International Managing Director Mr Krit Srichawla, said he was confident Ibis Fenix Bangkok would open on time for the 2006 peak season, and that the success of Ibis hotels in Asia made it a good fit for the Bangkok market.

“We are confident in the Ibis brand track record in Asia and in Accor’s ability to deliver positive results. We are sending a very clear message to the market that we have committed to opening two more Ibis hotels in Bangkok before the end of 2008” Mr Srichawla said.

Accor Asia Pacific Managing Director, Michael Issenberg, said that while a number of new hotels had opened recently in the Sukhumvit area, most target the top-end of the market.

“The Ibis Fenix Bangkok will fill a clear market need for international-branded 3-star hotels on Sukhumvit Road. The hotel’s rate structure will make it popular with business travellers during the week, and leisure travellers during weekends.”

Operators stake claim to airport opportunities

With the long-awaited Suvarnabhumi Airport scheduled to be operational in June, the area surrounding it as well as riverside locations in Samut Prakan province have been more attractive for hotel developers. Narong Suthipongpitarn, manager of the Thai Hotels Association, said the new airport certainly had brought about higher demand for accommodation in its vicinity.

The core demand will come from air crews and passengers who need accommodation, said Mr Narong.

However, hoteliers who want to develop new hotels in the areas will have to face higher land prices and construction cost.

Nevertheless, once Suvarnabhumi is operational, existing hotels in Bangkok's eastern suburbs and in Pattaya are the first to benefit from the influx of passengers through the new airport, said Mr Narong.

''The business at closer hotels such as the Novotel Bang Na and the Royal Princess on Srinakarin Road will certainly be brisk once the new airport is opened,'' he said.

The Royal Princess Srinakarin has spent 30 million baht renovating its property.

Several operators in Bangkok's eastern suburbs including Accor Asia Pacific, Central, Dusit and Sheraton are reportedly adding more rooms to existing properties.

At the same time, Central Hotels and Resorts plans to build another hotel next to its Central City Bang Na shopping centre on the Bang Na-Trat Road.

In Pattaya, which is only one hour away by car from the new airport, hotel operators are preparing their properties for more guests.

Many establishments have refurbished their properties while investors have begun developing more luxurious hotels in the resort city to welcome well-to-do tourists.

Next year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the number of international tourist arrivals is expected to reach 13.2 million.

According to the Thai Hotels Association, 30 more hotels are set to open in Bangkok in the next five years, increasing the number of rooms in the capital to about 100,000.

Mr Narong said the earlier prime locations for hotels in Bangkok were along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, in Bangkok's commercial districts such as Silom and Sathorn roads, and near Don Muang International Airport. Now, the vicinity of Suvarnabhumi Airport has emerged as another prime site.

He said there was still ample room for hotels to grow as the country had a variety of tourist destinations to offer.

In line with Mr Narong's anticipation, the TAT has projected with the availability of several new tourist attractions, international tourists are likely to extend their average length of stay in Thailand to 8.2 days this year from 8.1 days in 2005.

Erawan in major hotel tie-up with Accor

The Erawan Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the France-based Accor Group to build a network of up to 10 economy hotels under the Ibis brand in Thailand's major tourist destinations, costing between Bt300 million and Bt400 million each.

The first six locations are Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Krabi.

The companies expect the first six hotels to be built by 2008, and up to a further four to be completed by 2010. Each property will have about 200-250 rooms, said Erawan Group chief executive Kasama Punyagupta.

Accor is one of the world's leading mid-range and economy hotel operators. It already has 23 hotels in Thailand, with 13 more scheduled to open in the next two years, excluding those being built in the new Erawan alliance.

The Ibis brand, owned by Accor, is the world's most popular economy hotel brand, with more than 720 hotels around the world.

The Ibis hotel investment will from part of a broader three-year, Bt6-billion expansion programme at the Erawan Group, including two projects already announced: a five-star deluxe Six Senses resort and a four-star Courtyard by Mariott Bangkok, both due for completion next year.

The expansion plan is also likely to include one further four-star resort, which is currently under negotiation. Details should be announced soon.

"Our objective is to diversify both geographically and in terms of market segment," Kasama said. "By 2008 we aim to be a true 'proxy' of the Thai hospitality sector with a portfolio of around 12 hotels across the spectrum, from economy to five-star deluxe, in all the key travel destinations in Thailand."

To begin with, operation cash flows and efficient use of project debt will fund the company's initial investment of Bt6 million, while keeping within a medium-term debt-to-equity target ratio of 2:1, or less.

A rights and warrants issue, approved by the Erawan Group's board on Tuesday, will also support the expansion. The right issue will offer one new share for every three existing shares, at a price of Bt1 per share. It will raise Bt484 million.

For each new share, subscribers will also receive one free warrant. Two warrants will be convertible into one Erawan common share, at an exercise price of Bt2.15, in December 2007. The warrant conversion is expected to raise an additional Bt520 million in equity capital.

To support its warrants, Erawan Group reported to the Stock Exchange of Thailand yesterday that it would decrease its registered capital by eliminating registered shares that have not been subscribed, reducing the number of shares from Bt1.52 billion to Bt1.45 billion. Then, the company will increase its registered capital from Bt1.45 billion to Bt2.28 billion by issuing up to 826.89 million new ordinary shares at a par value of Bt1 each to support its warrant.

Michael Issenberg, managing director of Accor Asia-Pacific, said that most hotels under construction in Thailand would cater to the top end of the market, but very few were poised to cater to the fastest-growing segment, the economy sector.

The announcement comes at a time when Ibis is experiencing its fastest-ever expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. The company launched Ibis in Bangkok earlier this year, the brand is expanding in South Korea and Indonesia, and in China and India there are plans for networks of more than 20 Ibis hotels in each country, Issenberg said.

Thai hotel industry needs support

Thai hoteliers say they need more support from the government to help them compete with international rivals that are increasingly gaining a foothold in Bangkok.


"Looking at those luxurious hotels on the banks of Chao Phraya River, most of them are now owned by international investors," said Chanin Donavanik, who was re-elected as the chairman of the Thai Hotels Association (THA) on Friday.



Chanin: Concerned by international competition — JETJARAS NA RANONG"The Shangri-La and The Oriental belong to Hong Kong owners. The Millennium Hilton is owned by a Singapore-US joint venture, and the Royal Orchid Sheraton is owned and managed by the US-based Starwood group."


The Conrad hotel on Wireless Road is also owned by Hong Kong investors, said Mr Chanin, a director of Dusit Thani Plc.


According to Mr Chanin, competition in the hotel sector would intensify over the next two years as 30 more large hotels with around 20,000 rooms became operational, with both Thai and foreign owners.


Of the 20,000 rooms, about 60% will be in Bangkok. The rest will be in well-known tourist destinations such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya and Chiang Mai.


According to the THA, there are roughly 5,000 hotels of all types in Thailand.


"The increasing number of hotel rooms will force hoteliers to work harder to remain competitive in the industry, but the whole tourism industry will benefit from it as tourists would have a greater choice of accommodation," said Mr Chanin.


The THA anticipates that the increase in tourist traffic from the opening of the new Suvarnabhumi Airport would absorb the supply of new hotel rooms, he said.


The immediate concern for hotel operators is the effect of political rallies. Organisers of large tour groups have already cancelled some trips to Thailand over fears of violence.


"We hope that no violence will break out. It's too difficult to guess how and when the dispute will end," he said.


"As we can't forecast the situation of the industry for the next six months, what all hoteliers need to do now is to run their businesses cautiously," said Mr Chanin.


Nevertheless Dusit Thani Plc expects a better year than 2005. This was because the company had finished renovating its flagship Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok and completed its new D2 Hotel in Chiang Mai last year, said Mr Chanin.


"This year, we will see our revenue rise through the increase in the number of available rooms, while we no longer have big expenditure for renovation and construction," he said.


Dusit Thani planned to expand conservatively, maintaining a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.5 times, said Mr Chanin.


This year, it plans to sign five hotel management contracts for properties in Thailand and abroad. It is also planning to build another luxury hotel, possibly villa-type accommodation with a pool, in Koh Samui, and look for another location at a Southern beach destination.


Dusit Thani operates nine of its own hotels under three brands: Dusit, Royal Princess and D2. It also runs a hotel management business, hotel franchise system and a spa business, Devarana Spa.


The company's total revenue last year was 2.83 billion baht with a net profit of 245.11 million, down from 576.38 million the year before, reflecting renovation and construction expenses.


Shares of Dusit Thani (DTC) closed on Friday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 44 baht, up 50 satang, in trade worth 4.05 million baht. Over the past 52 weeks the shares have traded in a narrow range between 41.25 and 45 baht.

Peninsula launches spas

The Peninsula Hotels has announced the launch of new spas on its Asian properties. The programme also includes the major renovation at two of its US hotel spas.

The first spa will be launched at the Peninsula Hong Kong in May, fusing traditional Chinese elements. The spa will offer exclusive views of Victoria Harbour.In December, The Peninsula Bangkok will offer a full service spa overlooking the Chao Phya River in a traditional Thai colonial-style building.
The brand-new Peninsula Tokyo will open in September 2007, overlooking the gardens of the Imperial Palace, with the largest hotel rooms in the city.
In the United States, The Peninsula Beverly Hills and The Peninsula Chicago will be renovated and relaunch their spas this year. - The Nation

Quality rubber

The Agricultural Regulatory Office reported yesterday that 2,910 farmers who plant rubber seedlings had already been registered with the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry to encourage the Kingdom's rubber quality development.
Anan Suwannrat, director of the office, said the farmers controlled 29,700 rai of rubber plantations. They will be allowed to grow rubber trees for commercial purposes and guarantee high quality.The ministry's plan is to develop the country's rubber quality and increase farmers' income.The plan will also serve both the domestic and export market's rising demand for rubber. - The Nation.

"The Eugenia brings bygone era to life"

Eugene Yu-Ching Yeh, a 45-year-old Taiwanese businessman, has achieved his dream of having a colonial-style home, which he believes will remind him of his past life.


Last month he officially opened a boutique hotel named The Eugenia on Sukhumvit Road Soi 31, a three-storey, 12-suite establishment which exudes a bygone era of fine buildings, opulence and luxury.


The hotel embodies all these virtues in understated elegance and comes complete with swaying palms, antique furniture and fittings, and period furnishings and decorations throughout. Room rates are from US$108 (Bt4,127) to $138 a night.


"This is the house of my last life. When I first saw colonial homes like this I just knew I used to live in one, and now I can, in a dream, with memories of my past life," said Yeh, adding that he loved everything old, even cars, and adored living in a tropical country and eating very spicy food.


The furniture and fittings are an eclectic private collection picked up by Eugene and his family over the years in the erstwhile British and French colonies of India and Indo-China. The 300 antiques are now used to furnish the hotel's public and private rooms. Even shutters and hanging lamps were acquired before the hotel was built. Yeh started collecting when he was 12.


"I'm not a business professional but a dreamer," said Yeh, who has been in Bangkok for almost eight years. He was divorced 11 years ago and now lives with his daughter.


"Living in a colonial house is, and always was, one of my dreams. The colonial style has been one of my favourites ever since my first few travel experiences to Singapore, Penang, Bangkok and Hong Kong in the early 1970s.


Yeh named the hotel Eugenia in memory of an old Vietnamese woman who always called him Eugenia and gave him some impressions of the colonial style and a foretaste of his own hotel.


Yeh was a designer in Taiwan. He gave up the business in 1997 and moved to Thailand, where he set up a trading firm to export furniture and household decorations to Taiwan, Japan, Korea and China.


Like many another business expatriates, Yeh changed rented houses and serviced apartments quite a few times before settling in his present abode, now under the same roof as his hotel.


"I wanted to build a dream house and a different style of boutique hotel. I have no plans to make money from it: I just want to make my dream come true," he said.


Yeh said the Eugenia was more like a home than a hotel, with all the guests treated like family.


After spending more than 20 months searching for the best locations along Sukhumvit and Sathorn roads, Yeh finally bought a half-rai plot 14 months ago for Bt40 million and spent 10 months building the Eugenia, which cost him another Bt1 million.


"We target anybody who travels to Bangkok, even people from upcountry, who needs a place to stay for a few nights," said Yeh. "I don't want to compete with the big hotels in town. Our customers are people who travel a lot and don't like to stay in big hotels. They want a home away from home," he said.

Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok embarks on Second Phase of US$5.7 million Refurbishment

Earlier this month, the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok commenced the refurbishment of all guestrooms and suites in its Kannikar and Montathip Courts including the corridors and elevator landings. The project is the second phase of a two-year project and scheduled to be completed by October 2006. Phase one saw the introduction of seven new deluxe suites in July 2004 and the refurbishment of 158 guestrooms in Parichart Court in August 2005.

Due to the unique layout of the hotel, the guestroom refurbishment is being done in two phases to minimize guest impact. The Kannikar and Montathip Courts will close all its guestrooms and some of its elevator landings (temporarily) while the restaurants and shopping arcade in Parichart Court remain fully operational.

“We are fortunate that we are able to complete such an extensive refurbishment with minimal impact to the guest experience” said Regional Vice President and General Manager, Patrick Ghielmetti. “Guestrooms in Parichart Court will continue to provide the exceptional Four Seasons experience that guests have come to expect”.

Designed by Jeffrey Wilkes of LTW Designworks, Kuala Lumpur, the renovation will inject a fresh sense of luxury and further add to the sense of place. Existing teak flooring, wall panel details, arts and artifacts contribute to this desired impression but will be enhanced with a strong injection of color and a greater variety of textures. The upgrade includes 42-inch plasma TV screens, additional Internet and power points for in room computer use.

Timber wardrobes and associated details were stained a darker color yet allow the grainess of the wood to bleed through and finished with a hand rubbed satin gloss varnish. A shagreen inspired wall-covering wraps the room for an exotic feel, lending gentle light khaki and cream color and soft pattern. A similarly inspired carpet pattern flows across the floor injecting a lively colour and motion, balancing the ridged architectural layout.

Heavy cream Thai silk draperies enhance the visual size of the window and create a strong contrast for the newly refinished teak panels that flank the window. The furniture layout has been adjusted to allow for a better work environment at the desk, and created a cozy corner for lounge chairs and an ottoman, suitable for the business traveler but equally comfortable for the leisure traveler. The chairs are upholstered in silk enhanced cotton chenille for a luxurious feel. A large Thai inspired timber framed mirror creates a feeling of openness. Stone tops were added to the nightstands to provide a more practical and richer surface. Verdigris metal lamp bases were bronzed and reflect the rich bonze artworks seen in Thailand.

The rooms are designed in two color schemes, a warm palette of ochre’s and gelds accented with intense chili. The other scheme is lemongrass green and teak gold with charcoals and pewter grey. Both schemes balance well against the backdrop of dark rich timbers, khaki and cream for a distinctly Thai feel.

yes, it is for gargling , and i think it is coz the tap water doesn't taste that good. (not like in Germany :) )

ศักยภาพแบรนด์ดุสิตฯในตะวันออกกลางติดตลาดแล้ว นโยบายจากสำนักงานใหญ่กรุงเทพฯ ยืนยันชัดเจนภายในปีนี้จะพิจารณานำอีก 2 แบรนด์ คือ ปริ๊นเซส หรือ D2 เข้ามาบริหารโรงแรมหรูที่เตรียมเปิดกันไม่ต่ำกว่า 50 โครงการ แต่จะต้องเลือกให้เหมาะกับตลาด เทรนด์ของที่พักเมืองดูไบพื้นที่นิยมต้องเป็นโครงการรวมศูนย์ (multi-pro ject) ประกอบด้วย โรงแรมที่พัก ร้านอาหาร และสถานที่ช็อปปิ้ง

ยุทธศาสตร์ที่จะต้องทำควบคู่กันไประหว่างที่มีการลงทุนโรงแรม รีสอร์ต เกิดเป็นดอกเห็ดนั้น ตลาดกำลังต้องการสถาบันการสอนการโรงแรมและอาหาร คาดว่าภายใน 1-2 ปีนี้ จะผลักดันให้วิทยาลัยดุสิตธานีเป็นแหล่งรองรับนักศึกษาหลักสูตรการโรงแรมจากประเทศแถบนี้เดินทางเข้ามายังเมืองไทย

ผมเห็นกำลังซื้อตอนนี้แล้วตักตวงกันไม่หวาดไหว เพราะแต่ละเมืองใน U.A.E. ต่างก็มีอุตสาหกรรมด้านพลังงานและน้ำมันซึ่งสำคัญมาก การทำโครงการขนาดใหญ่รัฐบาลประเทศนี้คำนึงถึงผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างมาก ส่วนกลุ่มทุนที่เคยไปอยู่ต่างแดนก็ขนเงินกลับมาลงทุนในภาคพื้นของตน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นคูเวต ซาอุดีอาระเบีย U.A.E. อิหร่าน

ผลจากการพัฒนาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานและการลงทุนอย่างมโหฬารต่อเนื่องไปจนถึงปี 2553 จะเป็นผลดีต่อธุรกิจเกี่ยวเนื่อง เช่น บริษัทก่อสร้าง ผู้ผลิตเครื่องครัว และอุปกรณ์โรงแรม บุคลากรที่จะหลั่งไหลเข้าสู่อุตสาหกรรมโรงแรมและบริการ ซึ่งเมืองไทยจะได้เปรียบมากเพราะความสุภาพ อ่อนน้อม อัธยาศัยเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของลูกค้าอย่างมาก

จ เทรนด์ราคาห้องพักหลังจากนี้ไปจะเป็นอย่างไร

ช่วง 2-3 ปีนี้ ดูไบวางยุทธศาสตร์เป็นประตูธุรกิจไร้พรมแดนเชื่อมเครือข่ายนักลงทุนและนักเดินทางระหว่าง ตะวันออกกลาง-ยุโรป-อเมริกา-ออสเตรเลีย เข้าด้วยกัน ขณะนี้ยุโรปเลือกดูไบเป็นเกตเวย์ผ่านเข้าไปยังทวีปอื่น

ส่วน 12 ประเทศกลุ่มตะวันออกกลางเองก็เลือกดูไบเป็นศูนย์กลางการลงทุน ทำให้ปริมาณจราจรการเดินทางของผู้คนไหลเข้าออกมาก โรงแรมทั้ง ดูไบได้รับโอกาสทองโดยเฉพาะระดับ 5 ดาว สามารถขายห้องพักราคาเฉลี่ย 800-1,200 เหรียญสหรัฐ/ห้อง/คืน ไม่รวมอาหารเช้าอีก 80-100 เหรียญสหรัฐ/มื้อ และไม่รวมค่าธรรมเนียมบริการและอื่นๆ

อนาคตเมื่อปริมาณห้องพักเพิ่มขึ้น โดยมีสายการบินควบคุมการเข้าถึงสถานที่ทุกแห่ง รัฐบาลดูไบใส่เงินเข้ามากระตุ้นดีมานด์ ส่วนโปรดักต์ที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่ก็ล้วนไฮเทค เป็นกลยุทธ์การสร้างเหตุผลให้คนตื่นตัวเดินทางเข้า-ออกเมืองนี้มากขึ้นอีกหลายเท่า ดังนั้นราคาห้องพักอาจจะปรับตัวสูงขึ้นก็เป็นได้

แต่สิ่งที่โรงแรมทุกแห่งกำลังแข่งขันกันเพื่อรักษาส่วนแบ่งตลาดไว้ในมือให้มากที่สุด คือ การลงทุนพัฒนาโซนกิจกรรมบริการกลุ่มตลาดครอบครัว เพราะลูกค้าเกือบร้อยเปอร์เซ็นต์ทั้งภูมิภาคนี้ไปไหนมาไหนพร้อมกันเป็นครอบครัว วันพักเฉลี่ยประมาณ 1 สัปดาห์ ช่วงเดือนตุลาคม-มีนาคม ของทุกปีชาวยุโรปก็นิยมเข้ามาพักผ่อน เนื่องจากซื้อบ้านหลังที่สองไว้

แน่นอน นโยบายของเครือดุสิตฯคือใช้ศักยภาพเครือข่ายโรงแรมให้เป็นประโยชน์มากที่สุด ขณะนี้กรุงเทพฯกำลังฮอตมากในดูไบและตะวันออกลางเรื่องเมดิคอลเซอร์วิส เป็นเทรนด์ที่กำลังมาแรง โรงพยาบาลหลายแห่งชื่อติดตลาด

Accor aims to double its Thai network

Accor, the international hotel management group, aims to double its network in Thailand to 40 hotels by the end of 2007. The move will bring the total number of hotel rooms in Thailand under Accor's brands to around 8,000.

Accor yesterday announced plans to open three new hotels in Bangkok, Pattaya and Chumphon, expanding its current network to 25 properties with more than 6,300 rooms.

The hotels, to be opened by the end of the year, include the 260-room All Seasons in Pattaya, the 160-room Novotel Chumphon Beach Resort and Golf Club, and the 165-unit Grand Mercure Suites in Bangkok.

Accor has already opened four hotels in Bangkok this year, including two Ibis hotels, the Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel last month and the Sofitel Residence in Asoke yesterday.

In August, Accor will hold the soft opening of the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel, which will have 600 rooms.

In November, the group will open the Sofitel Phokeetra Krabi, owned by pharmaceutical group Thai Nakorn Patana.

Accor Asia-Pacific managing director Michael Issenberg said the group intended to cover the full spectrum of the market.

''Our development strategy extends from five-star Sofitels and Grand Mercures to the three-star Ibis and All Seasons brands,'' he said.

Accor is also keen to establish its first project in Koh Samui, which he described as a ''missing point'' in Accor's global destination network.

Thailand has been one of the focal points in Accor's expanding profile in Asia-Pacific because of its maturing tourism industry, domestic economic strength and relative political stability, he said.

''Occupancy figures in Thailand for the first four months were up 8% for our 15 comparable hotels, and Phuket is off to a great start, up 37% and close to returning to pre-tsunami levels,'' he said.

Accor's Thai hotel network contributes about 10% to the group's business in Asia-Pacific. The region, in turn, generates 70% of Accor's total global business, with 4,000 hotels in 92 countries.

Mr Issenberg was upbeat about the tourism potential in the region. Air travel around Asia Pacific increased 7% in 2005, following a 27% growth in 2004.

''There is no doubt that Asia-Pacific will be the powerhouse for global tourism growth for many years to come,'' said Mr Issenberg.

Accor starts new brand for budget travellers

Aside from three new hotels in Thailand, the Accor Group is introducing a new brand - All Seasons - to attract economy travellers.

The first All Seasons property is in Pattaya, where the management contract will begin in November, said Accor Asia-Pacific managing director Michael Issenberg.

The All Seasons Pattaya, with 260 rooms, will be the third property of the group in the resort city. It is located in the centre of Pattaya between Beach Road and Second Road. The hotel is the first All Seasons in Thailand and the second in Asia after Bali. All Seasons is a three-star hotel brand already famous in Australia and it services tourists in particular, Issenberg said.

Meanwhile, the group has won contracts to manage three new hotels in Thailand - in Pattaya, Bangkok and Chumphon. Issenberg said the group would open the Novotel Chumphon Beach Resort and Spa in December with 80 rooms, doubling to 160 next year.

He said the group would also introduce the first Grand Mercure Suite hotel in Thailand. The Mercure Suite, featuring 165 rooms and scheduled to open in 2007, is located on Phayathai Road in Bangkok.

แหล่งข่าวระดับสูงจากกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ หรือกต. เปิดเผยกับ"ฐานเศรษฐกิจ"ว่าในขณะนี้กระทรวงการต่างประเทศได้รับการตอบรับจากสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดี สมเด็จพระราชินี และผู้แทนพระองค์จาก 25 ประเทศทั่วโลกที่จะเสด็จมาร่วมเฉลิมฉลองการครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 60 ปีของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เนื่องจากล่าสุดสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดี สมเด็จพระราชินี จากประเทศเนปาล ไม่สามารถเดินทางมาร่วมงานได้ เพราะทรงห่วงสถานการณ์ภายในประเทศ


โดยกต.ได้เตรียมห้องพักของโรงแรมระดับ 5 ดาวไว้รองรับประมุขของประเทศต่าง ๆ อย่างเป็นทางการทั้งหมดจำนวน 13 แห่ง


ได้แก่ โรงแรมโอเรียนเต็ล,โรงแรมแชงกรี-ล่า,โรงแรมรอยัล ออร์คิด เชอราตัน,โรงแรมแกรนด์ ไฮแอท เอราวัณ,โรงแรมโฟร์ซีซัน กรุงเทพฯ,โรงแรมพลาซา แอทธินี,โรงแรมดุสิตธานี กรุงเทพฯ,โรงแรมสุโขทัย,โรงแรมคอนราด กรุงเทพฯ,โรงแรมอินเตอร์คอนติเนนตัล,โรงแรมเชอราตัน แกรนด์ สุขุมวิท,โรงแรมเพนนินซูลา และโรงแรมปาร์คนายเลิศ แรฟเฟิลส์ อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนล โดยหลักการคัดเลือกโรงแรมจะขึ้นอยู่กับการตัดสินใจของแต่ละประเทศ เนื่องจากเคยพักมาแล้วก่อนหน้านี้ และบางส่วนก็มีการประสานงานผ่านทางสถานทูตไทย เช่น ประมุขของญี่ปุ่น จะเข้าพักที่โรงแรมปาร์คนายเลิศ ประมุขของจอร์แดน พักที่โรงแรมโฟร์ซีซัน


เจ้าฟ้าชายแอนดรูว์ แห่งราชวงศ์อังกฤษจะทรงพักที่โรงแรมแกรนด์ไฮแอท เอราวัณ ส่วนโรงแรมโอเรียนเต็ลจะมีประมุขเข้าพักจาก 5-6 ประเทศ อาทิ บูรไน บาเรน สวีเดน เดนมาร์ค


และสเปน เป็นต้น ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นแขกเก่าที่เคยพักกับโรงแรมอยู่แล้ว โดยคาดว่าจะใช้ห้องพักจำนวนหลายร้อยห้อง เนื่องจากแต่ละประเทศจะมีคณะผู้ติดตามเข้ามาจำนวนมาก


สำหรับมาตรการในการรักษาความปลอดภัยในพื้นที่ของโรงแรมดังกล่าวทั้งหมด ขณะนี้ทางรัฐบาลได้มีการเตรียมเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจเพื่อดูแลพื้นที่โดยรอบจำนวนกว่า 2 พันนาย โดยก่อนหน้านี้ได้มีการนำตำรวจจากสก๊อตแลนด์ยาท เข้ามาช่วยฝึกอบรมหลักสูตรพิเศษให้กับเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจล่วงหน้าแล้วกว่า 3 เดือน และในทุกโรงแรมจะมีกองอำนวยการมีนายตำรวจอารักขาใกล้ชิด เพราะจะไม่มีการปิดโรงแรมแต่จะปิดห้องพักเฉพาะชั้นที่เป็นห้องพักที่ใช้รองรับราชอาคันตุกะเท่านั้น พร้อมทั้งได้มีการประสานงานกับตำรวจท้องที่ตำรวจ รวมทั้งโรงพยาบาลในพื้นที่ใกล้เคียง ทั้งนี้สำหรับแขกที่เข้าพักนั้นส่วนใหญ่จะใช้ระยะเวลาในการพักประมาณ 3-4 วัน


ขณะเดียวกันยังมีราชอาคันตุกะหลายประเทศที่ประสงค์จะเดินทางไปท่องเที่ยวต่อ ทั้งที่เชียงใหม่ ภูเก็ต พัทยา เป็นต้น และก็มีบางประเทศสนใจที่จะเข้ามาศึกษาโครงการพระราชดำริด้วย ดังนั้นรัฐบาลไทยจะต้องเตรียมการเรื่องถวายการต้อนรับและรักษาความปลอดภัยต่อเนื่องในทุกภาคส่วนตั้งแต่วันที่ 7 -21 มิ.ย.49


โดยการเดินทางมายังประเทศไทยของราชอาคันตุกะและผู้ติดตาม จะแบ่งออกเป็น 3 กลุ่มใหญ่ ได้แก่ 1. เดินทางมาด้วยเครื่องบินส่วนตัว(เที่ยวบินพิเศษ.) ซึ่งจะถือว่าเป็นเที่ยวบินวีไอพี มีการจัดพื้นที่บริเวณบน.6 กองทัพอากาศไว้ต้อนรับ ซึ่งสมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯสยามมกุฎราชกุมาร จะเป็นผู้แทนพระองค์ที่จะรอรับราชอาคันตุกะ 2.เดินทางมากับเที่ยวบินประจำและกลับด้วยเที่ยวบินพิเศษ 3.เดินทางทั้งมาและกลับด้วยเที่ยวบินประจำ ซึ่งจะมีสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯสยามบรมราชกุมารี รับเสด็จราชอาคันตุกะที่สนามบินดอนเมือง รวมถึงจัดทีมคณะรัฐมนตรีคอยร่วมรับเสด็จจำนวน 7 ผลัดด้วย


สำหรับภาพรวมของกำหนดการ พระราชพิธีและรัฐพิธีนั้น ในวันที่ 9 มิ.ย.49 เวลา09.00-17.00 น. จะมีพิธีถวายบังคมสมเด็จพระบูรพมหากษัตริยาธิราชและพิธีลงนามถวายพระพร ณ ปราสาทพระเทพบิดร พระบรมมหาราชวัง และเวลา 10.00 น. จะมีพระราชพิธีบวงสรวงสมเด็จพระบูรพมหากษัตริยาธิราช ณ พลับพลาพิธีพระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม โดยในหลวงจะเสด็จออกมหาสมาคม ถวายพระพรชัยมงคล ณ สีหบัญชร พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม และเวลา 19.19 น.จะมีพิธีจุดเทียนชัยถวายพระพรชัยมงคง ณ มณฑลพิธีท้องสนามหลวง


ส่วนในวันที่ 10 มิ.ย.2549 เวลา 17.00 น.จะมีพระราชพิธีฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 60 ปี สถาปนาสมณศักดิ์พระสังฆาธิการ พระสงฆ์เจริญพระพุทธมนต์ เวียนเทียนสมโภชสิริราชสมบัติ


ณ พระที่นั่งอมรินทรวินัจฉัย ในวันที่ 12 มิ.ย.2549 เวลา13.00 น.ประมุขจาก 25 ประเทศจะทรวงเสด็จร่วมงานฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 60 ปี ณ พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม และเวลา 17.30 น. จะเสด็จทอดพระเนตรขบวนเรือพระราชพิธี และพิธีเปิดนิทรรศการเฉลิมพระเกียรติ ณ หอประชุมกองทัพเรือและราชนาวิกสภา และวันที่ 13 มิ.ย. 2549 จะมีการถวายเลี้ยงพระกระยาหารค่ำ


ณ พระที่นั่งบรมราชสถิตยมโหฬาร โดยมีสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีที่อาวุโสที่สุด คือ พระราชาธิบดีของบรูไน จะเป็นผู้แทนองค์พระประมุขของทุกประเทศกล่าวถวายพระพรแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว


แหล่งข่าวยังกล่าวต่อว่า นอกจากมาตรการรักษาความปลอดภัยภายในโรงแรม สนามบินและสถานที่ต่าง ๆ แล้ว ในส่วนของการรักษาความปลอดภัยทางน้ำในระหว่างชมกระบวนเรือพระราชพิธีนั้น ก็จะมีการปิดการจราจรทางน้ำทั้งหมดระหว่างสะพานกรุงธนฯไปจนถึงสะพานสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าฯ เพื่อให้เกิดความปลอดภัยและเป็นระเบียบในการเดินเรือ ทั้งจะมีการจัดตั้งหน่วยควบคุมทางน้ำ ที่จะประกอบไปด้วยเรือรักษาการณ์จำนวน 12 ลำ และเจ้าหน้าที่ประจำท่าเรือ 30 ท่าเรือ รวมกำลังพลกว่า 122 นายเป็นหมู่เรือตรวจการณ์และรักษาการณ์ จัดหน่วยควบคุมประจำท่าเรือโดยสาร รวมกว่า 30 ท่าเรือ อาทิ ท่าเรือเทเวศร์ ท่าเรือท่าช้าง


ด้านเรืออากาศเอก พินิจ สาหร่ายทอง ผู้อำนวยการท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพ บริษัทท่าอากาศยานไทยจำกัด (มหาชน.)หรือทอท. เปิดเผยว่าในขณะนี้ทอท.ได้ประชุมเตรียมความพร้อมการถวายการต้อนรับองค์พระประมุขของต่างประเทศ ร่วมกับหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องทั้งหมดแล้ว และสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ จะเสด็จมาถวายการต้อนรับและส่งเสด็จองค์ประมุขจากประเทศต่างๆด้วยพระองค์เอง ทอท.จึงต้องดูแลคุมเข้มมาตรการรักษาความปลอดภัยขั้นสูงสุด ซึ่งจะเข้มงวดกว่าการรองรับผู้นำต่าง ๆ ที่เดินทางเข้ามาประชุมเอเปกในไทย


นายวสิงห์ กิตติกุล รองกรรมการผู้อำนวยการใหญ่ฝ่ายการพาณิชย์ บริษัท การบินไทย จำกัด (มหาชน.) เปิดเผยว่าการบินไทยได้จัดเตรียมโปรแกรมส่งเสริมการขายเพื่อร่วมเฉลิมฉลองในวโรกาสที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 60 ปี ภายใต้โครงการ "THAILAND HOME COMING" โดยจะเชิญชวนคนไทยจากต่างแดนกลับสู่เมืองไทยในปีมหามงคล

นายอภิชาติ พัชรภิญโญพงศ์ กรรมการผู้จัดการ โรงแรมริเวอร์ไซด์ กรุงเทพฯ เจ้าของเรือท่องเที่ยว ริเวอร์ไซด์ และนายกสมาคมเรือท่องเที่ยว เปิดเผย "ประชาชาติธุรกิจ" ว่า เข้าร่วมโครงการให้บริการจัดชมกระบวนเห่เรือพระราชพิธีในวโรกาสสิริราชสมบัติครองราชย์ครบ 60 ปี พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ระหว่างวันที่ 2, 6, 9 มิ.ย. โดยนำริเวอร์ไซด์ลำที่ 3 ขนาด 1,200 ที่ ติดตั้งอัฒจันทร์รองรับได้ประมาณ 840 ที่นั่ง เพื่อให้นักท่องเที่ยวคนไทยและต่างชาติมีโอกาสชมและสัมผัสบริการทัวร์เรืออย่างใกล้ชิด

ประเมินสถานการณ์เที่ยวทางเรือภัตตาคารโดยรวมตลอดปี 2549 แนวโน้มรายได้หมุนเวียนจะประมาณ 1,000 ล้านบาท มีเรือบริการอยู่ในบริเวณแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา 18 ลำ ทั้งเรือเหล็กขนาด 500-1,200 ที่นั่ง/ลำ และเรือไม้ ขนาด 50, 80, 100 ที่นั่ง/ลำ ตลาดเติบโตเพิ่มเฉลี่ย 20-30% สูงกว่า 2-3 ปีที่ผ่านมาประมาณ 1 เท่าตัว

ดังนั้นริเวอร์ไซด์มีโครงการลงทุนต่อเรือภัตตาคารลำใหม่มูลค่า 140 ล้านบาท อีก 1 ลำ ขนาด 1,600 ที่นั่ง กว้าง 18 เมตร ยาว 120 เมตร วางเป้าจะทำโครงสร้างให้เสร็จภายใน 9 เดือน ตกแต่งจนสมบูรณ์อีก 3 เดือน ขณะนี้กำลังรอดูท่าทีเศรษฐกิจภาพรวมว่าจะเป็นอย่างไรหากไม่มีปัญหาภายในปี 2550 จะนำเรือลำดังกล่าวเข้าสู่ตลาดทันที

นายอภิชาติกล่าวว่า ธุรกิจเรือริเวอร์ไซด์วางกลยุทธ์ขยาย 3 ตลาดหลัก คือ เรือบริการอาหารค่ำ (dinner cruise) กำลังซื้อเป็นกลุ่มในประเทศ 70% เตรียมรุกเจาะตลาดใหม่กลุ่มประชุมสัมมนาและอินเซ็นทีฟ (MICE) ส่วนใหญ่บริษัทคอร์ปอเรตจะนิยมใช้เรือเปิดตัวสินค้าแบรนด์ดัง อาทิ ซีตรอง แอลจี เครื่องตกแต่งบ้าน คอนซูเมอร์โปรดักต์ เพิ่มขึ้นทุกปีขณะนี้มีส่วนแบ่งตลาดประมาณ 10% และกลุ่มทัวร์หมู่คณะ จีน เกาหลี ไต้หวัน มีประมาณ 20%

"บริการหลักการทำเรือดินเนอร์ยังเป็นเป้าหมายสำคัญในริเวอร์ไซด์ 1 จัดดินเนอร์ครูซ บริการ 20.30-22.00 น.ราคาขึ้นเรือ 120 บาท พร้อมเมนูอาหารตามสั่งตามราคาจริง ริเวอร์ไซด์ 2 จัดบุฟเฟต์ ดินเนอร์ 750 บาท/คน/เที่ยว เทรนด์อนาคตคงยังได้เปรียบเทียบ เพราะมีบริการครบวงจร ตั้งแต่ลานจอดรถ 700 คัน โรงแรม อาหารและเครื่องดื่ม สามารถขยายลงทุนต่อเรือเพิ่มเข้ามาในตลาดได้"

นายอภิชาติกล่าวว่า ขณะนี้มีท่าเรือที่ให้บริการ หลักซึ่งเป็นจุดที่นักท่องเที่ยวใช้ขึ้น-ลง เรือภัตตาคาร คือ ท่าริเวอร์ซิตี้ ท่าริเวอร์ไซด์ มีบางแห่งเป็นของกรมเจ้าท่า ในฐานะนายกสมาคมเรือได้วางแผนที่จะพัฒนาธุรกิจ พนักงาน และกลุ่มผู้ประกอบการ ให้ได้ตามมาตรฐานเป็นที่ยอมรับของตลาดนานาชาติ โดยได้จัดประชุมสัมมนาการปรับกลยุทธ์และจัดบริการแก่สมาชิกปีละ 2 ครั้ง ซ้อมการกู้ภัยทางน้ำ การฝึกอบรมสตาฟอย่างต่อเนื่อง

อย่างไรก็ตาม การเข้าร่วมให้บริการตั้งอัฒจันทร์ชมกระบวนเห่เรือพระราชพิธีนั้น เรือริเวอร์ไซด์ร่วมกับการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย (ททท.) ขายบัตร 3,000 บาท/คน/รอบ และธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย (บางขุนพรหม) ขายบัตร 1,000 บาท/คน/รอบ มีอาหารและเครื่องดื่มบริการตลอดงาน

Bangkok gets a long-overdue renaissance in boutique hotels

Just as one waits ages for a bus only to have three come along at once, so Bangkok finds itself surfeited these days with boutique hotels. For many years, the Thai capital was bereft of the welcome alternative these fashionable little properties provide to the big chain hotels or the flophouses of Khao San Road—and it's still anyone's guess why so many have opened now. Perhaps the adoption of Thai style in so many boutique hotels and spas in the West has encouraged local operators to welcome long-haul visitors with the same commercially successful combination of elegantly minimalist furnishings and ethnic accents. Or maybe there's a growing realization that boutique hotels, because of their size, are viable entry-level ventures in an industry that often requires daunting amounts of start-up capital. In any case, to identify the best of Bangkok's new wave of accommodation, check out our tips below or use this simple rule of thumb: if your taxi driver has heard of it, it's already passé.

ARUN RESIDENCE: Housed in a beautifully restored 80-year-old building, this riverfront property, www.arunresidence.com, has just five rooms because co-owner Piyanuj Ruckpanich wants every window to open to a view of the famed Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn. The noise from the Chao Phraya might frustrate light sleepers, but the views of this watery thoroughfare—especially from the patio of the Arun Suite—are too enjoyable to pass up. So is a dinnertime reservation at the Deck, the hotel's Thai and Western restaurant. Peruse the menu of chef Thanunya Kaikaew, who has a cookbook of healthy recipes to her name, and take in the fabulous sunset.
THE EUGENIA: This 12-room, colonial-style Sukhumvit gem, www.theeugenia.com, doubles as an antiques repository for Taiwanese owner and Bangkok resident Eugene Yeh. Those are Yeh's hand-beaten copper bathtubs and four-poster beds in the rooms, and his vintage cars in the garage. These and other thoughtful touches—including complimentary minibars and free wi-fi access—will have you feeling quite at home. A cozy cigar lounge-cum-library, beds adorned with Belgian linen and down-filled pillows, and a swimming pool—rare in a property this size—make it even harder to leave.

PHRANAKORN NORNLEN: Not so much a boutique hotel as a backpacker hostel done right, the 50-room Phranakorn Nornlen, www.phranakorn-nornlen.com, wins the approval of its bearded, tie-dye clientele by incorporating recycled materials in almost every aspect of the fittings. Showerheads are hammered together from brass dessert bowls; remaindered tins of mismatching emulsion from the local paint shop give the walls a dappled charm; lamps are acquired from thrift stores. The location (a kilometer from Khao San Road) and housekeeping rules are equally boho: there's no smoking on the property, no TV in the rooms and organic juices are served at breakfast.

LUXX: This newly opened property, www.staywithluxx.com, is the brainchild of ex-financier Dusadee Srishevachart, who transformed a dingy, five-story shophouse off Silom Road into one of Bangkok's hottest addresses. A cold, sparse lobby overdoes the minimalism, but beautiful timber flooring, luxurious beds and cute wooden bathtubs bring warmth to Luxx's 13 guest rooms (choose between one-room suites with courtyard views or standard rooms with small balconies, and only opt for a high floor if you don't mind doing without an elevator). There are plenty of dining options in the neighborhood, but if you're eating breakfast in-house, the hotel's Mexx restaurant serves modern American fare.

Four Season Koh Samui resort to open

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts is strengthening its presence in Thailand's high-end hospitality industry with the renovation of its Bangkok hotel and the opening of a luxury resort on Koh Samui early next year.

The second phase in the makeover of the 353-unit Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok near the Ratchaprasong intersection was finished this month, culminating a 365-million-baht investment that breathes new life into the 23-year-old business.

The opening of the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, now in the final stage of construction, on Feb 1, will complete the Toronto-based international hotel chain's strategic plan to penetrate Thailand's prime locations.

With the opening of the 62-villa island resort, Thailand will have one of the largest Four Seasons facilities in the world.

Thailand also has the Four Seasons Resort in Chiang Mai, which boasts 64 Lanna-style pavilions overlooking terraced rice fields and mountains, and a Golden Triangle hideaway in Chiang Rai with 15 luxurious tents.

Patrick Ghielmetti, the Four Seasons regional vice-president for Thailand, said the extensive refurbishment of the Four Seasons Bangkok, formerly known as The Regent Bangkok, and the new property in Samui, reflected the company's long-term confidence in Thailand's luxury hospitality market. The Minor Corporation, controlled by Bill Heinecke, owns both properties.

Four Seasons and Minor have also been looking at Phuket to set up a presence, but "it is too early to talk", the Swiss-born hotelier told the Bangkok Post.

The renovation of Four Seasons Bangkok was carried out in two phases to minimise inconvenience for guests.

Phase one saw the introduction of seven new deluxe suites in July 2004 and the refurbishment of 158 guest rooms in Parichart Court in August 2005.

Phase two involved the refurbishment of the remaining 174 guest rooms and suites in Kannikar and Montathip Courts.

The two-year renovation was aimed at injecting a fresh sense of luxury to the Bangkok property that caters to business and leisure guests.

"It is almost like a new hotel and will be good for another 10 years," Mr Ghielmetti said.

A key upgrade was the installation of 42-inch plasma TV screens.

The renovation would enable the hotel to compete with nearby deluxe hotels in Bangkok's prime business and shopping district, he added.

Four Seasons expects to sustain this year's 70% occupancy rate next year but with improved profitability. The hotel had seen its yields rise by about 25% in the past three years, according to the hotelier.

The Samui resort, located on a 36-acre plot on the northwest tip of Laem Yai Bay, features 60 villas built on stilts in the local style, as well as two elegant suites.

"We are trying to create a destination within a destination," Mr Ghielmetti said, noting that the concept was tailored for wealthy couples who stay for an average of five days per trip and spend more than US$650 a day at the resort.

The Four Seasons Kho Samui will be in competition with two existing players on the island _ Evason and Le Me{aac}ridien _ but expects a more diverse guest base, including Europeans, Americans, Russian and Asians.

The resort projects an occupancy rate of 55% in its first year of operation, partly because it will miss part of the high-season traffic that begins in November this year. Its occupancy rate in the second year is projected at 60-70%.
