View Full Version : ...local to Leeds
Molly August 22nd, 2005, 04:20 PM As one of the aspects about Leeds I love is that getting out of the city is so easy... so you get the best of both of city/non-city worlds.
So feel free to post some pics of the natural attractions of the area.

If so where abouts is that? Looks like some damn fine scenary.

Metrolink August 22nd, 2005, 06:00 PM I'll give you, the countryside around the Leeds area shits on most other cities in the country.
Think the extra snow you get over there adds something to those picies as well.
Boards August 22nd, 2005, 06:04 PM I love Yorkshire its probably my favourite part of England. Beautiful.

aviator August 22nd, 2005, 10:41 PM This is a cracker of a thread! There are some great pictures on here and it makes me realise I should get myself out and about a bit more. I took my visiting family up to Hardraw Force last week and it was spectacular. Next time, I'll take the camera though I doubt I can match the quality already posted on the thread.
jimbo August 22nd, 2005, 11:30 PM This is a top thread - well done Molly!
I know its not exactly NEAR Leeds (closer to Blackburn really), but still the Yorkshire Dales - specifically the top of Pen-y-ghent in July. One of my favourite places of all time. Spent many weekends cycling from Stainforth up and over to Halton Gill, Litton and Arncliffe in Litton Dale and from Horton up to Ribblehead and back down between Ingleton and Whernside. Hmmm. City boy displays longing for home.
From the side of Pen-y-ghent looking down towards Littondale.

As the sign is pointing - downwards to Horton in Ribblesdale (in the gap and to the left).

Finally a view of Settle nestling down at the bottom of the valley, spoilt rather by some rambling hiker from London Village. Ello!

SmartCity August 23rd, 2005, 01:21 AM Some fantastic pictures here folks....shame I had my digital camera stolen in Marmaris, Turkey, last month. It amazes me to think I live within five minutes of Otley Chevin and yet only twenty minutes from the centre of Leeds.

SmartCity December 28th, 2005, 07:04 PM Quite different from Mollys earlier pictures taken from Otley Chevin.
A rather bleak snowy day view from the Chevin towards Menston.(LS29 area)

Molly December 28th, 2005, 09:29 PM Ah this thread is back...well done! :) The snow isn't so deep but it does wonders for the landscape. :)
We went up to Haworth this afternoon it was ffffrrrrreeezing but the views were impressive...but of course we all forgot our cameras! The steam train in the snow with the cold exagerating the steam effect was magical.
Anyway... boxing day I took some shots at Malham.

Incidentally, Otley and the Chevin are within the Leeds boundary.
So, of course is the Grammar School with Eccup Reservoir (also in Leeds) in the background.
aviator December 29th, 2005, 11:14 AM Molly, I love your shots of Malham. You've made me remember my first ever visit to Yorkshire when I was ten years old. I was on a school trip and we stayed in some kind of youth hostelling place a few miles outside the village. It was magical, apart from having to put on a suit to go to church on Sunday. I never thought I'd end up living up here :)

Leeds No.1 January 19th, 2006, 06:19 PM Very nice... where abouts was that? We hardly got any snow- a dusting that lasted for like 1 hour or something ridiculous. I don't get out to The Dales much... Malham was the last place I went, a while back. I wish I could go more, not very accesible though...
daveylad2 January 19th, 2006, 07:13 PM This is very local to Leeds. You can just make out the City Centre skyline in the left hand corner.

That's an intriguing shot. Part of me thinks it's Temple Newsam but another part thinks it's the other side of the city with St Bartholemew's Church in Armley on the skyline to the right of the picture.

Not sure how tall Kirkstall Abbey is, but it is enormously impressive in its state of completeness, considering its age dating back to 1182AD (completion date).
http://www.leeds.gov.uk/kirkstallabbey/images_kirkstll/kirkback3.jpg
The surrounding park and the neighbouring Abbey House Museum are also great, the museum is like the Castle Museum in York (for those who have been) with re-created Victorian Streets etc. The whole Abbey site has just had a major regeneration including a new visitors centre.

di Livio March 23rd, 2006, 11:58 AM Great image of the Abbey pre-reformation. Yes, it's one of the weakest of Yorkshire's abbeys, but it's ours, and a big slap in the face for those people who think Leeds has no history beyond the 19th century.

I never knew Yeadon had a such a big stretch of water. It sure beats Wetherby's section of the Wharfe, where they attempted to host part one of a triathlon competition a few weeks ago. Predictably, the swim was cancelled.

di Livio June 6th, 2006, 03:07 PM Oh I seeee, I don't know about Yeadon tarn, but i didn't realise you could sail there.
Canoeists use the wharfe around Wetherby, but I wouldn't advise a swim, not only because of strong currents, but also because the rats scurrying in and out of the water round by the bridge. Weil's disease ahoy.
A much underrated Leeds experience is taking the 770 bus to Boston Spa through fields like these near Barwick-in-elmet

Well I know I would look like a pervert asking this sort of questions… One of the (many) things that strike those coming from continent is the fact that people are not swimming in the lakes or rivers (or even in a sea). At least now – Guardian some time ago published pictures of people swimming in Thames just under the Tower Bridge in 40s I think. Once we swam in a very nice lake nearby (forgot what it was, such a pity) and people passing buy looked at us as if we were crazy.

Molly June 21st, 2006, 08:17 PM Saltaire is really nice... it's great to see the Mills transformed over the years from dereliction back into use. ....not been to The Boathouse for yearsI! Is it still serving up good food? Used to be really nice... we lived a decent walk away from there when we lived in Bradford. Still walk there now sometimes as it's not that far from Leeds...on a good day.. From there the walk up to BBQ land Baildon Moor through Shipley Glen and its little tram up the hill is quaint too. :)
Oh very very nice shots of Yeadon Tarn... have they finished doing the paths there? I've not been for ages.

I have to say, no, food in Boathouse is real bad now, but it is the best place for a drink or two. It is non-smoking and very friendly. For a food I highly recommend to climb to Shipley Glen - pub there won plenty of awards for food recently, and I can see why.

Molly April 20th, 2007, 01:52 PM Wow those shots are fantastic! :)
I thought about going to Bolton Abbey last weekend. Not been foa ages.
Oh the kids here swim in the canal and when it's hot they fill up the locks to swim in.
We always swam in the Thames as kids and so did our kids and their friends. You see loads of local kids swimming in the Thames ...The only problem is the rivers get so heavily used in the summers now it is hard to swim in some places, same with the canal. and people now love to interfere with what other people do so you get told off for enjoying these old fashioned traditions. When we were kids we just went off on our own in boats and we swung on ropes swam in the river from about 9 years old and it was acceptable. Now it is seen as dangerous and even if adults supervise the kids and have safety equipment the public come and tell you off for putting the kids in danger.
