View Full Version : #Sydney :Distillery Hill (Pyrmont)
CULWULLA February 12th, 2003, 05:28 AM Thought i might kick off this thread seeing that the complex has already started!
The twin 19storey/65m residential towers will have a huge impact on the Pyrmont skyline. They will be the tallest bldgs on the peninsula!
Designed by Melbournes DCM, they show vibrant style and unique, might i say daring colour schemes!
i took a brisk walk today at lunch and found that the Bowman st tower core (render) is 4 storeys and the Jones st tower 1 storey high.

CULWULLA February 12th, 2003, 05:51 AM sorry spaz!! hope you dont mind ive copied opening post .
from spaz-
Hi all, after a 5 day break from the forum ( jesus it was nice, I strongly advise that we all do this every now and then! I was busy helping my brother move from Melb up here to Sydney, nice place in Five Dock ) !
Anyway, good news is that the "Quarry" and "Distillery", both 19 storey apartment towers on the hill at Pyrmont ( next to McCaffrey's) are well and truly underway.
The foundations are being poured now, cranes are on site and they will be built simultaneously.
Both projects are DCM designed and 90-95 % sold, prices range from $600k ( penthouse in Quarry went for $2.9m)
The architecture is cutting edge and they will have great presence on the hill overlooking the city ! A great addition to the Sydney 'panorama'.
Good news is that there's more to come....

CULWULLA February 13th, 2003, 04:28 AM view from waldorf Ats. the Distillery hill complex of 5 x 19storey towers will join the recently complet4ed Mc cafferys hill to diminated the Pyrmont skyline.

CULWULLA March 10th, 2003, 04:57 AM The height along the yellow blade on Distillery Tower is 74m above ground which will make it the tallest in Pyrmont.

finn March 10th, 2003, 08:53 AM Excellent! :D Great to see the Distillery Hill models in the Pyrmont context!
The complex of towers is going to be a totally different face for the area - a whole new mini skyline!
It's amazing to see how much more dominant they look than McCaffereys, since at the moment McCaffereys seems to tower over everything else there!
spazpecker March 10th, 2003, 11:04 PM Who else thinks that McCaffreys is a plain brown box that looks circa 1970's when viewed from the south ?
Bulwara March 11th, 2003, 12:10 PM I totally agree with you Spaz. The design & colours just don't do it for me. I would have prefered something more along the lines of the Moore Park Gardens Towers design in my neighbourhood
spazpecker March 21st, 2003, 09:00 AM Down that way this afternon and got some pics.
I really love Pyrmont. It is very densely populated now and the architecture at the northern end ( near the water) is pretty bloody good.
I counted 7 projects under construction in the around around the tip.
These pics are all pretty self explanatory !!

brizer March 22nd, 2003, 02:56 PM On wednesday when I last looked at the model at Syd Town Hall, the tags on top of the models indicated that The Distillery was 91m and The Quarry 87m though both are, apparently, 19 storeys tall.
There is no doubt DCM are pretty fine architects, though I read recently that we could have had even more adventurous buildings if it were not for the The Powers That Be reining in the architects. The article was about why Melbourne architecture is more adventurous than Sydney's. It seems the pathway to less exciting architecture is paved with good intentions and the bureaucratic mind.
The same thing happened on the monument site on Oxford Street where John Wardle's design was too way out for the local council officers. Wardle is also a Melburnian as is DCM.
Sigh!

remember brizer, those height labels i put on the models are "heights above sea level". the area up there is very high above sea. approx 20m.

climbing_crane April 20th, 2003, 01:56 PM Jeez I didn't know they were going to be that big. When I see horizontal cranes I assume it is only a small building. Better start getting piccies. I hope I haven't missed too much of the construction process.
Fabian April 20th, 2003, 11:18 PM Were still at an early stage. It's not too late.
Make sure any photo's you take with film are processed on CD.
climbing_crane April 21st, 2003, 07:14 AM Went by the site today and noticed a dirt road on the clifftop behind the site. I couldn't find a way to get up their. Is it possible to go up there does anyone know. You could get some great shots from up their.
And I got 6 rolls of film to get developed tomorrow so I can't get them all on CD it would be way to exy.
Bulwara April 22nd, 2003, 11:13 AM All this construction going on just 3 blocks from home and do you think I've been up there for a look-see?
No
Time for a walk up the road I think
climbing_crane, can I ask how many boxes of photo's you have? I know when I used the old SLR I spent a small fortune on printing. Ever thought of going digital? It really does pay off in no time
climbing_crane April 23rd, 2003, 04:20 AM I don't that that many photos as yet because most of the construction sites are still early days. With all th ephoto packets I get I put most of them away in my draw, say 70 or 80. Then there are about 30 others on my spare bed all with names of buildings under construction. For Latitude I have 4 packets already but they aren't full they are just sorted out in Street order. World Tower I have about 15 packets full. 1 packet might say "Distance Shots George Street" and so on.
I digital would be nice but I want to have photo albums showing the whole construction process once they are all built.
And this is only my construction photos. I have 2 albums full of existing buildings and City shots and lots more pictures of my cats, big waves, family and so on.:)
Muse May 24th, 2003, 09:15 AM Distillery now = 10 storeys already u/c.
Quarry now = 3 storeys already u/c.

climbing_crane June 12th, 2003, 08:33 AM That's the quarry you nitwit:) :D :)
CULWULLA June 12th, 2003, 08:44 AM yep, quarry is in foreground, distillery just north. both are approx same height. didtillery is only 10 levels atm and Quarry is 6..
climbing_crane June 12th, 2003, 11:16 AM It's in a nice quiet area. I enjoy doing my conscription walk passed these sites.
Fabian June 12th, 2003, 10:06 PM You mean construction walk climbing_crane?
If it has taken 3/4 months to build to that point, distillery should top out in September/October and the quarry at the end of the year, early next year.
climbing_crane June 13th, 2003, 12:28 AM Maybe. Keep in mind that the Quarry is catching up a little.
climbing_crane June 24th, 2003, 12:10 PM Colourful babies eh?
climbing_crane June 24th, 2003, 12:13 PM The real thing. Not so colourful...yet.
Bulwara June 29th, 2003, 03:16 AM We've all grown used to the McCaffrey's tower in the Hill, the front-runner in Pyrmonts hill-top cluster. Personally I think it has already dated in its ordinary brick design.

climbing_crane August 2nd, 2003, 01:01 PM I wonder if the Distillery crane is the highest crane EVER in Pyrmont.
Muse August 2nd, 2003, 01:37 PM I would say the highest crane EVER in Pyrmont was possibly for the construction of MaCafferty Mews:

climbing_crane August 2nd, 2003, 03:41 PM It was an accident. I took 3 night pics of Distillery and when I was attaching the 3rd one for some reason it duplicated the 2nd one. And who's got a photo of the crane on that mews project?

Living near Mountain Street in Ultimo, it is easy to see how it is lined with Colonial Warehouse structures and new apartments making a pretty standardised (but interesting) horizon line, from Broadway to the Fish Markets.
Except right now at the very end of Mountain Street is Distillery punctuating the horizon at the end, and how! Looks impressive.

AltiusAltiusAltius September 30th, 2003, 12:13 PM I can't think of any other suburb being transformed so profoundly like Pyrmont! :)
Not so long ago there were demonstrations against any new construction there and then countless developments started to take shape....7 years back when Star City was u/c there were only very few modern buildings there....And now we have Star City ("Tacky suburban casino!" - Jeff Kenneth), light rail, IBM Innovation Centre, Nokia offices, Channel 10 (Channel 7 may be there soon too!), other commercial buildings incl. redevelopment of Jones Bay Wharf & Darling Island and HEAPS of residential jewels - Mirvac have done excellent job with Gateway and Promontory, massive Jacksons Landing (former CSR site) by Lend Lease is a landmark development...even Meriton buildings at Pyrmont look very good!
But the crown jewel will be Distillery Hill towers dominating Pyrmont skyline! I was so happy when McCafferys was built nearby but there are 5 more 20 storey (90m) towers to come (2 already topped out and look awesome!)
The last location to be developed will probably be the massive vacant site adjoining Star City (won't be a high-rise but certainly very important and classy building - haven't heard about this one for a while but know it's been for sale.....)
Go Pyrmont! :guns1:
AR September 30th, 2003, 04:06 PM I reckon Altius!! :)
Don't forget the water police site. And regarding Channel 7, THEY ARE moving to Pyrmont early to mid next year.

Plus, although it is a few hundred metres into the adjacent suburb of Ultimo, ABC's massive broadcasting centre and studios are in essentially the same precinct! I was in the studio audience for Andrew Denton's "Enough Rope" a few weeks ago, which is filmed there, as is "The Glasshouse".
Oh, and also don't forget the planned Fish Markets redevelopment! :)
climbing_crane October 8th, 2003, 01:15 PM I've so enjoyed walking out to these sites over the last 7 or so months.
CULWULLA October 9th, 2003, 12:52 AM I used to keep progress on these slabs but lost interest when they became hidden behind scaffolding! all you see these days are 70m high blocks of scaffolds. AltiusAltiusAltius November 24th, 2003, 07:17 AM It's a shame Pyrmont has only about 85-90 m height limit....Should have been all high rise up to 120 m! I reckon Harry S once had a radical proposal for the whole Pyrmont to be flattened and rebuilt from scratch. There are so many annoying gaps (rail tracks etc) separating today's developments....
On the other hand it's good to have it as it is because Distillery Hill towers are nicely elevated and visible from everywhere...How many are left to be approved now? 3?

Trances February 15th, 2004, 08:55 AM Distillery Hill towers are nicely elevated and visible from everywhere
yes it great
And what do you mean there are still 3 more towers ?
climbing_crane February 15th, 2004, 11:49 AM I've said all along that these will be stunners.
And still 3 more to go. 2 at current are under construction (Towers A and B) Towers C and D are approved I think and Tower E is pending approval.
CULWULLA February 15th, 2004, 12:01 PM Distillery and Quarry are the first 2 towers to be completed on Distillery hill. the 3rd tower which is also 20storeys will be given approval soon and commence sometime 2004.Recently a 14 storey was lodged with council which is on the water near Anzac bridge pylon. There will be 2 more 20 storey towers to be lodged with council maybe later in year. So there will be a total of 6 highrise apartment towers!
the precinct should look awesome in 3 years time!

What's being built in the foreground of your pic Cul?
CULWULLA February 17th, 2004, 03:09 AM its a new residential development. lots of 2-3 storey terrace type villas. An interesting thing is a 30m Burley Griffith incinerator is being rebuilt to original design. the old buildings were an old depot whch are also being restored. I think it was terrible how SCC approved the demolition of the 1930's Burley Griffith incinerator that used to occupy the site of Meritons 15storey curved apartments in this pic below Distillery hill towers.:bash:

Muse February 29th, 2004, 06:51 AM I'm sure The Quarry's green blade and other features will be just as vibrant as The Distillery's yellow (which I could clearly see on the train between Wollstonecraft and Waverton last Friday). These are DCM designs so we expect nothing less than vibrancy.
Great combo; DCM and Bovis Lend Lease Ltd a'la Foster's BT Tower builders.
Now if only DCM's 'Bluey' @ Milsons Point :master: gets approved :master: , we will have 3 of the 4 primary colours lining Sydney's great Port Jackson and Johnstons Bay.

Yes, the Domain advertisement only really shows the smaller building of the new tower, although the 19 storey tower can be seen "ghosted" behind it.
"Knox on Bowman" must be referring to this smaller building and perhaps the taller tower will simply be called "Knox" or "Know on Distillery Hill" or some such name.
CULWULLA April 20th, 2004, 07:46 AM the last two x 20storey towers have had a stage 1 lodged so the massing models are in. both 65m tall. the curved one is 80m above Bowman st.

Fabian May 8th, 2004, 03:18 AM SMH's domain section today has a full page advert for the next tower in this development known as "Stonecutters". It comes with a nice rendering. I've just had a scan of the Jacksons landing website www.jacksonslanding.com.au but nothing has gone up yet.
Also scaffholding from "The Quarry" is coming down as well, exposing it's green top which from the harbour or the inner west looks quite nice not to mention fairly bright. It's making all the other towers in the area appear quite drab.

Brizer May 28th, 2004, 08:03 AM How about the colours on Quarry and Distillery?! What a knockout! Bet this brings out the conservatives with their knickers in knots. It is high time some one did something daring like this as Sydney, for all its larrikin reputation for glitz and show, has the dullest architecture overall - there are a few terrific exceptions, but as a rule, borin'!
climbing_crane June 5th, 2004, 11:46 AM I read a couple of years ago in the paper that the Distillery will be chiefly known as The Comb and Quarry would be recognized as a shit I forgot.
Tony P June 5th, 2004, 03:13 PM This development completely swamps and overshadows Pyrmonts quaint low rise heritage architecture!!

Muse July 13th, 2004, 10:22 AM ^ They look like a couple of Coolabah Wine casks (the stuff you drink @ the party @ 3.00AM when nothing else is left).
However where I love on the other side of them off to the left in CULWULLA's pics, they look soooooo much nicer than that horrible dull McCaffereys block on the hill. That one just looks like nothing (left one in Fabian's pic), nothing at all.
The terracotta coloured back-side of the Coolabah green building is really spiffy.
Syd-Hk July 13th, 2004, 02:36 PM i like the colours on the towers, they really bring some life to the area.
Tony P July 13th, 2004, 11:14 PM From my office at Crows Nest, these things really stand out. From that distance, pollution usually greys and browns out the city so much it becomes really dull, but the bright green and yellow of Quarry and Distillary really puncture the view. They look fantastic.

MrTall July 29th, 2004, 06:46 PM Sheesh! What's the G-O with all those colours. Looks like a 2 year old had a go at the construction drawings.
climbing_crane July 30th, 2004, 12:37 PM The colours are daring and finally something new for Sydney. It's about time we finally have some artistic scrapers.
Fabian July 30th, 2004, 02:08 PM I'm impressed with the final outcome of both towers. This is definately an award winning work. I have found the designs to be eyecatching with special praise for their use of colour, and incorporating them into the facade as seen with the pale tones of green and grey in "The Quarry", and the yellow blades of "The Distillery".
climbing_crane July 30th, 2004, 02:27 PM I have to admit that they do not look good from a distance. You really have to be close to admire them.
Vitriol July 30th, 2004, 03:18 PM Sheesh! What's the G-O with all those colours. Looks like a 2 year old had a go at the construction drawings.
I agree, the yellow is cacky. It would have been nicer had it been a muted yellow, not an overpowering fleuorescent striking yellow.
It looks like the headquarters for a spiffy hair comb company.

What do you call a *muted* yellow. Please tell us. We'd love to hear your opinion.
Vitriol July 31st, 2004, 05:51 AM Why do human beings always have to have a whinge. This is why I am so drawn to nature and also why I despair 75% of people.
Well wouldn't it all be lovely if every single living person thought alike?
My sincere apologies that not everyone on this forum shares your opinions!
A muted yellow? Is it really that hard to picture? If you need someone to help you to use your imagination, then you probably shouldn't be asking them in the first place.
Brizer July 31st, 2004, 06:18 AM I love the colours because they are so unexpected in this predominantly beige city. Sydney is supposed to be exciting, lively, brash, cheeky and colourful (pun intended)but with a few notable exceptions, its buildings are beige in colour and beige in character. A few more of these in-yer-eye colours and shapes, strategically placed, would ginger up the place very nicely.
CULWULLA July 31st, 2004, 09:11 AM great pix cc! they have turned out great! something dif for Syd~
christarrant July 31st, 2004, 09:56 AM I agree with testuser entirely. Sydney's buildings are very beige/cream/white in colour and very conservative in design, esp vs Melbourne.
Even quite new buildings are very average e.g. the apartments at Balmain shores, Breakfast point and that horrific brown peice of shit at the top of the Pyrmont hill next to the fantastic new green and yellow towers. WHY oh WHY ??????
CULWULLA October 15th, 2004, 06:39 AM Managed to get out to the newly completed Distillery Towers today in Prymont. The 2x 20storey/70m towers were designed by Melbournes DCM.
