I've got some "Free fun on ice" tickets for MoA, Megamall and Southmall ice skating rinks.
As you may have noticed, it's not really free since you still have to pay for the ice skates rental (you can't use your own pair of ice skates if you own one) which is almost twice as expensive for MoA compared to that in Mega and Southmall.
So if the skates rental alone is that expensive, how much more for the skating time if you don't have those coupons?

BTW, for that price, they better give you some good looking ice skates, not the generic looking, ugly ones that they rent-out in Megamall.
Uhm, can you tell me where'd you get those coupons from? I'd also like to get perhaps a couple of 'em...

In fact this design was quite nice also, but to terminate the montonouse and symmetry of glass panel, they have to put some protruding abstract wall with geometric groovelines or something metal cladding w/ s/s strip inlay and some protruding metal frames and rod, in that case the design more artistic in apprearance. Now it seems to be a monumetal look because of the vertical strip line of buffle blades but it still modern and simple. It's nice because it's pinoy.

Maybe the lights will add design and color. Nice malls look good because of the lighting. Let's just hope SM did an excellent job on that. It's their best mall anyway and it's set to awe every living thing in the universe.

THE SM group has short-listed three hotel chains, one of which is Accor, to help design and eventually operate two luxury hotels at the Mall of Asia, which rising in the land reclamation area at Manila Bay.

The hotels would serve as natural adjuncts to the 40,000-square-meter SM exhibition and convention center that is targeted for completion at mid-2007

Wow, that'd be the second existing Accor hotel in the Philippines after the Sofitel Philippine Plaza and the third ever in our history! They're really keen on being the largest hotel chain in Asia Pacific (I think the current leader is Shangri-La.). I wish we will be seeing other chains as well like, Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Swissotel, Hilton and Grand Hyatt. There's a lack of hotel brands in Manila compared to Jakarta and Bangkok.

Yeah that's sad. We were getting more than a million tourists back in the 80s. But it took us more than a dozen years to reach the 2 million mark. And it even deteriorated after that. At least now, tourism is booming again here in our country. Kaya lang, bakit ngayon lang?

JustHorace
April 29th, 2006, 10:14 AM
Oh, that's for sure. We passed the half-a-million mark for the first quarter of this year, considering that its a lame season. And, hotel chains are venturing around the country for possible locations. This is a sign that our future in tourism is very promising.

The hotel is part of the plan. Maybe SM will publicly announce it anytime soon. They'll just see if MoA will 'click in' with the tourists. I'm pretty sure it will. It's a bayside property.

Anytime soon like what cosmoManila said. It does seem like they're very keen on having the hotel component of SM-CBP as they're already in talks with several hotel developers according to the annual report of SM Investments Corp.

SM Investments to build second IT hub for P5.6B

SM Investments Corp., the holding company of mall magnate Henry Sy, will spend at least P5.6 billion to develop its second information technology (IT) hub in Bay City in Pasay City, to be called SM iCITY 2.

With total land area of 119,261 square meters, SM iCITY application’s for IT zone status has already approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) last March 28, allowing future locators to avail of tax cuts and incentives.

In a telephone interview, Noel Sanchez, SM Investments assistant vice-president, said the company is targeting completion of SM iCITY 2 in the next five years. He said SM Investments is already preparing to construct the first office building, expected to be completed by June 2007.

To be called the One E-comCenter, it will be a 10-storey building with total floor space of 94,000 square meters. Total leasable area is 67,900 square meters, with seven floors allotted for office space, two and a half floors for parking, and the ground floor for commercial uses.

"In our plan, we expect SM iCITY 2 to host four buildings. One E-comCenter will be our first building within SM iCITY 2. The exact timetable for the construction for the second building will depend on the lease take up of the first building. It could be before June 2007 or immediately after," Mr. Sanchez said.

Succeeding buildings could be higher than the first building. These will be called Two E-comCenter to Four E-comCenter.

"The minimum investment for the first building that has ten floors is about P1.4 billion. The investments for the succeeding buildings could be higher since we target the three buildings to have more than ten floors," Mr. Sanchez said.

The four buildings in SM iCITY 2 will primarily cater to the office requirements of business process outsourcing (BPO) firms, particularly call centers, and other service companies.

The first IT hub of SM Investments in Bay City is the 6.9-hectare SM iCITY 1. This now hosts the 7,000 square meter and single-floor building of US-based call center firm TeleTech Customer Care Management Phils.

"But we might use the remaining 5.2 hectares in SM iCITY 1 for other purposes (non-IT)," Mr. Sanchez said.

Mr. Sanchez said the earlier announced Maitrade Expo and Convention center -- envisioned to become a "favored" conference and trade exhibit venue -- will not be constructed within the SM iCITY 2 but rather beside it.

The convention center will have two floors, a mezzanine and basement parking with a total leasable area of 17,800 square meters featuring large exhibition areas and function rooms.

The two IT hubs, SM iCITY 1 and 2, are located beside the 381,000-square meter SM Mall of Asia, designed to become the country’s largest shopping complex.

Inside the Mall of Asia, computer maker Dell, Inc. is already operating a 13,470.5-square meter call center in the north parking building. The facility employs some 300 people who provide technical assistance to Dell clients in the United States for its desktop and notebook products.

The 60-hectare SM Central Business Park, where all these developments are taking place, is being developed by SM Investments to be the "foremost and only central business district in the country by the bay, integrating business park facilities with entertainment, recreational, tourism, and residential land uses."

Aside from office buildings, other developments planned for the SM Central Business Park include residential clusters, a coliseum for sporting events and entertainment shows and a ferry terminal.

SM Investments is a conglomerate with interests in retail merchandising, shopping malls, banking and financial services, real estate development and tourism.

Kenneth, busses from lawton going to cavite passes in Baclaran. the thing is, mashadong malayo pa ang lalakarin mo kung doon ka pa ibababa.

I guess they will find an easy way to go to MOA. There are a lot of FX/Vans drivers waiting for this kind of opportunity. They might put up terminal which can accomodate a direct route at most possible places. (e.g. Lawton - MOA, Dasmariñas - MOA, Alabang - MOA etc.). Lets just HOPE that authorities will give the franchise to these FX/Van drivers instead of having the game of "hide-and-seek" between the policemen and drivers. :D

lumubog na tiles?!

although maganda ung loob ng mall yan... obviously very traditionaly SM parin ung Interiors... lookie at the staircase.. lookie at the fake trees... and lookie at the oval atriums... new SMs have this as a standard.

It's easy to get inside. Drive your car up to the guard on the North Parking Building, near the Shrine Church, open your window and say "Tenant". They will let you in. Hehe. Of course you have to say in with enough confidence and "yabang" with matching annoyed look.

They'll let you park at the 3rd level of the carpark reserved for tenants.

Btw, the carpark design is similar to that of robinsons place ermita where you have to drive up to the 3rd level non-stop. I haven't tried the south parking building yet, but I guess its probably the same.

Cool! but it feels kinda risky, I think we need someone who actually has a store there so we can be sure that we won't get apprehended if they found out were lying.

umm... North Parking Building, near the Church (Shrine of Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life)? The North Parking is located at the other end of MoA, South is the one close to the church and located right beside MAITRADE Center. ;)

Guyzz, I saw Dale Abenojar's interview over TV Patrol last Sunday via phone patch. he said he is already in what they call "death zone". Ako ang natakot sa kanya kasi he was talking like he was weakening. He was even talking about his 2 million pesos debts for his attempt at hindi nya alam kung paano nya mababayaran. He even said he do not have climbing gears! and no sponsors at hindi niya malaman kong babalik nalang sya pababa...nakakatakot naman!!

Obvioulsy, Dale Abenojar wants to outrun Garduce and became the first Filipino to reach the world's highest peak.

6,000 assured of jobs at SM Mall of Asia
By Rhodina Villanueva
The Philippine Star 05/12/2006

An official of the Pasay City government yesterday disclosed that at least 6,000 people are now assured of work at the soon-to-open SM Mall of Asia located at the Bay City area in Roxas Boulevard.

Greg Alcera, head of Pasay City’s Public Employment and Services Office (PESO), said positions that were filled up include managers and personnel at the administration department and the different establishments and stalls inside the mall.

"There will be restaurants, salons, clothes and shoe shops, specialty stores, recreational area, among others," he added.

Alcera noted that 4,500 out of these 6,000 workers, are Pasay City residents. Earlier, the official explained that residents will be given priority in the job hiring at new new SM mall.

He pointed out that an ordinance passed by the City Council mandates that at least 60 percent of the workers to be hired in the newly-constructed mall, should come from Pasay City.

"We want to help first and foremost the unemployed residents in the city. In fact, we will develop a networking system where the names of our jobless residents and their specific skills or expertise will recorded in our office and we would be the one to get in touch with them regarding job openings," Alcera explained.

He added that 70 percent of job vacancies in construction should be allotted to Pasay City residents. These include work for masons, plumbers, welders, steelmen, technicians, carpenters, among others.

Alcera said they are expecting that a total of 9,000 jobs will be generated before the mall’s formal opening on May 21.

Sitting on a three-hectare lot, the SM Mall of Asia is now considered as the biggest mall not only in the country but in Asia and reputed to be the third biggest in the world.

Mall of Asia
By Tony Lopez
Source: The Manila Times

Those who appreciate beauty should visit the Mall of Asia at the first opportunity.

Built at a cost of P7 billion, it is quite possibly the world’s most beautiful mall, facing as it does one of the earth’s most stupendous natural wonders. You can shop there too. So you shop while you watch the seascape.

Mall of Asia sits on a 60-hectare property. Its footprint is 38.6 hectares, enough space to house 49 jumbo jets or 40 football fields. Space is not a luxury. It’s an excess.

“I intended it that way,” explains Henry Sy Sr. who personally accompanied this writer for a four-hour tour of the sprawling mall Sunday afternoon. He was with two of his sons, Hans and Herbert. “I could have made much more money here by building a high-rise mall. But then, it would not have beauty and character,” Henry told me.

The complex of four buildings connected by elevated walkways, is sprawling type, seemingly just two stories. And there are skylites, atriums and gardens everywhere. “It’s fresh, clean and green,” enthuses Betty Sy, treasurer of the family but publicly listed holding company SM Investments Corp.

Initially, Mall of Asia has 500 outlets, including 180 restaurants, an Olympic-size skating rink, a Music Hall, good for 900 seats, a 13,000-square-meter hypermarket with P150-million worth of inventory, and 10 cinemas with 4,100 seats total, including a Directors’ Club for private viewing and a 560-seat Imax with an eight-story-high theater with a 22-meter by 33-meter screen size and -million worth of equipment. “The Imax is a first in the Philippines,” volunteers Hans Sy.

“We are now the clean wet market,” says Herbert Sy, who oversees the group’s 33 supermarkets and hypermarkets, which have combined annual revenues of P45 billion.

What takes the breath of visitors is the view of the pristine 2-kilometer shoreline. “There is nothing like it in the world,” says Sy Sr.

“Every tourist guide on the Philippines talks about Manila’s sunset,” notes Hans Sy, “but there is no nice place in Metro Manila where you can sit safe and secure and watch the sunset.”

“The mall is 85-percent occupied,” Sy Sr. volunteers, but adds quickly, “we intentionally didn’t award everything. We left the 15 percent because if a good locator comes in, we won’t have space for him.”

In fact, says Steven T. Tan, regional operations manager for the Mall of Asia, “there were over 1,000 applicants or two applicants for every one slot.”

The SM Department Store is the first department store in the world developed around the theme, say its designers Alex Soto and Keith Yamasaki of Pasadena, California’s design team The Retail Element. “The theme is Manila Bay, the sea, sails, sea animals,” explains Soto. “I don’ think there is quite like it,” adds Yamasaki.

The overall design element is fluid and organic, says SM. The luggage department, for instance, has cruise voyage for a theme, that of the Ladies Wear, tropical fish.

“I put the best in this mall,” says Sy Sr. “I want the Filipino to enjoy the best.” “It provides a different kind of shopping experience,” says Tessie Sy, co-vice chairman of SM Investments Corp., the family holding company which has P54-billion revenues and P7.1-billion profits.

The elder Sy is the SMIC chairman. He has six children: Tessie; Betty, the treasurer; Henry Sy Jr., co-vice chairman; Hans, first executive vice president; Herbert, first executive vice president. Youngest child, Harley is SMIC president.

“This will be the premier tourist destination in the Asia Pacific,” predicts Henry Sr.

MALL OF ASIA: Raising the ante on shopping

By Dinna Chan Vasquez
MALL of Asia is not the biggest commercial center in the continent. There are at least three other malls in Asia that hold the distinction. But with 800 outlets spread over 386,000 square meters, it is certainly the biggest and most overwhelming shopping center in the country.

Names like Zara, UCC Coffee, Fully Booked and A Different Bookstore will share mall space alongside more familiar names such as Bench, Jollibee and Forever Flawless. Think your reliable SM Mall, which Mall of Asia is, meets Glorietta, only better.

Set to open tomorrow, Mall of Asia will redefine Filipinos’ relationships with malls.

The sprawling shopping center is more than just a shopping center. It is envisioned to be a modern market place that will offer not only shopping and dining. It is walking distance from a beautiful church built by the Sy family, who owns SM. Nearby is a call center that employs young Filipinos. SM’s corporate offices are also located near the mall. There is an Olympic-sized ice rink that will also be a venue for hockey games. Another feature is the theater, which can seat 900. It can be a venue for live shows and concerts. Mall of Asia will also be the home of Asia’s largest Imax theater. The mall’s seven cinemas will accommodate more than 7,000. Mall of Asia will also have multipurpose areas, which can be used for exhibits, launches and performances.

The mall is organized around four blocks, including a central mall, two side parking buildings (the 28,237.42 sq m department store and the 12, 253.90 sq m hypermarket) and the entertainment block facing the bay.

This is a shopping mall which you can’t cover in one day alone, if you really want to have a good time. The number of shops and sights to see are overwhelming and the distances so great that Mall of Asia needs at least three days to be enjoyed.

According to American firm Arquitectonica, which also designed The Podium and several buildings abroad, the four-block split is driven by future expansion plans.

Skylights, landscaped terraces and outdoor dining balconies will allow mall-goers to see the view even when they are indoors. The entertainment block will be covered but not air-conditioned for mall-goers to fully enjoy the seafront. The overall look is simple and free of unnecessary details but striking. The shop frontages and balustrades will mostly be in glass for a modern and functional look.

In contrast, the department store will carry a playful “Under the Sea” theme while the hypermarket will house Taste Asia, which will have the “dampa” concept of food cooked right after you’ve bought it.

For convenience, practically every alley will have restrooms and tenant mix will be determined by zones (i.e. fashion) and by complement (i.e. bookstores next to cafés) to make the layout more interesting. Aside from restaurants and specialty boutiques, there will also be convenience stores (supermarkets, department stores, do-it-yourself centers and appliance and furniture outlets) and commercial services (clinics, gyms and travel agents). For sports enthusiasts, there are bowling alleys.

The SM management knows that much is expected from them in this project. After all, through the years, they have always said, “We’ve got it all for you.” This time, they really, really mean it.

SM’s P6.5-B Mall of Asia opens tomorrow
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 05/20/2006

After riding out periods of economic dislocation and political turmoil, Philippine retail king Henry Sy Sr., one of the richest men in Asia, is out to test history again with the Mall of Asia – his biggest and most ambitious project to date – which opens its doors to the public tomorrow (May 21).

The Mall of Asia, built at a cost of P6.5 billion, is expected to contribute about three to five percent to the SM Group’s revenues this year, rising to 10 percent in the long-term. SM Prime Holdings Inc.’s 25th mall measures 400,000 square meters with provisions for expansion.

Located on a 60-hectare property overlooking Manila Bay, Mall of Asia will open with an initial 72-percent occupancy rate.

The mall is about half the size of the South China Mall in Dongguan, China – said to be the world’s biggest mall – but about 30 percent bigger than the Mall of America, the second-biggest shopping center in the United States.

It took the SM Group two-and-a-half years to build Mall of Asia, which was designed by Arquitectonica, a US-based designing firm which also did Festival Walk in Hong Kong, American Airlines Arena in Miami, Westin Hotel in Times Square, New York, and Disney All Star Resort in Florida.

Mall of Asia will host over 600 local and international brands and over 150 indoor and fine dining outlets.

It will house the country’s first IMAX theater, whose screens measure 22 by 30 meters – approximately the height of an eight-storey building and will be able to seat 600 people, and seven more state-of-the-art cinemas.

The mall will also feature the country’s first Olympic-sized skating rink in addition to a bowling and billiards hall and an indoor theater for live performances with a seating capacity of 900.

Envisioned as the "destination mall," Mall of Asia will bring the total gross floor area of all SM Group’s operating malls across the country to 3.4 million square meters.

Hans Sy, president of SM Prime, said the Mall of Asia is expected to generate employment for close to 10,000 people and contribute substantial amount of taxes for the government.

What encouraged us to do this is the robust remittances from overseas Filipino workers.

We believe the Philippines and the company can benefit from this," Sy said.

"We are a nation of mall lovers with millions flocking to our air-conditioned malls daily and more so on weekends," Sy added.

Aside from Mall of Asia, SM Prime is scheduled to open four more malls this year.

"(Henry) Sy has a very good reading and understanding of the Philippines,’’ said Donald Gimbel, senior managing director at New York-based Carret & Co., which manages about $2 billion, including shares in Sy’s SM Investments. "I don’t doubt this will be among his successful ventures.’’

Sy, who became the nation’s second-richest man parlaying a shoe store he founded after World War II into the biggest Philippine retailer, started planning Mall of Asia in 1995. Its opening, delayed by the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis, comes as rising taxes may damp purchasing power but Sy is betting tourists will help keep his shops full.

The country is a "natural destination" for travelers from wealthier neighbors because of its central location, beaches and friendly, English-speaking population, Sy said in an interview.

The Philippines forecasts tourist arrivals to rise 15 percent to a record three million this year. To do that, the nation, which lags neighbors Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in drawing travelers, is spending $17 million to promote its beaches and Spanish churches to tourists.

Rising tourist arrivals could help an economy that’s the smallest among 14 Asia-Pacific economies tracked by Bloomberg, while ranking sixth in population size.

"The risk facing the mall is it’s opening at a time when purchasing power is getting diluted by higher taxes and rising oil prices,’’ said Junie Banaag, who helps manage more than P1.1 billion in First Metro Investment Corp.

The Asian financial crisis forced Sy to halt plans to build the mall by 1998. "The crisis made us conservative," said Hans Sy. SM Prime instead opened smaller malls that helped it earn a record P4.97-billion profit last year on P11 billion revenues.

About 30 cents of every US dollar sent home by Filipinos working abroad is spent shopping and about half of that is probably spent in Sy’s malls, according to Macquarie Securities. The tycoon’s Manila malls account for a third of the capital’s shopping space, Macquarie estimates.

"It (Mall of Asia) will be a destination mall, offering almost everything the Philippines has to offer,’’ said Sy, who used the slogan "We’ve got it all" in building his retailing empire.

Mall of Asia is the centerpiece of Sy’s 148-acre SM Central Business Park, which he’s filling with a convention center, a sports coliseum and office and residential towers.

The tycoon, worth $1.5 billion according to Forbes, opened his first mall in 1985, when the economy had its worst post-World War II slump. He opened Megamall in 1991, when the economy contracted 0.6 percent, hurt by coup attempts and power shortages.

It's "New Shopping Phenomenon" (Siam Paragon) vs "No Other Mall comes Close" (SM Mall of Asia)...

So my question is, is that slogan made for Philippine setting only? I'm sure no malls can come close with SM MOA in the Phils....if that is made for Asia-wide setting...malamang maraming aangal sa slogan na yan..:)
