May nag comment dun sa Thai Forum na magkaiba naman daw ang Siam Paragon at MOA dahil iba daw ang target market nila...yung SP daw eh parang city mall siya with most of the international brand names shops na meron sila at yung MOA ay para lang daw isang suburban mall lang (pang jologs kung baga...haha)..at mukhang wala masyadong international branded shops. Could someone advise all the international brand tenants ng SM MOA (current at would be)?

I'm sure some international branded shops are yet to open by next month pa, pero I hope some forumers could take pics of some international branded shops na bukas na at ipost din natin dito lalo na sa MOA thread sa world forum para naman i prove na mali ang akala nila. Sana magbukas na ang mga international brand shops na yan para tambakan natin ng picture dito para i prove na mali ang akala nila na isang 2nd rate mall lang ang MOA.

I think it's pathetic to expect foreigners to appreciate MOA when some of our local people throw these negative remarks about the mall and its crowd.

For me, MOA is still better. Very Filipino - huge, simple, unpretentious, but functional. I dont care about what these foreigners say. MOA wasn't made for them in the first place.

I don't think it will be a good idea to put in a lot of "internationally" branded stores. I actually think SM did a good job by giving local brands like bench, penshoppe, mossimo, maldita, and a couple others large stores so that tourists have something different to shop for.

I wouldn't go to Thailand to shop in Marks n Spenser or Bvlgari or Debenhams or Colehann, meron naman dito nun eh. When I'm abroad I look for brands developed there. Same here. Its about time we take care of our own.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT there AMRAS! In fact SM is so rightful of that tagline "NO OTHER MALL COMES CLOSE".

When it comes to number of malls (25 and still counting, in fact they will have 2 more SM Cities before the end of the year) and size its in the no. 1 slot! these other malls are super nice and all glammed up, well its easy when u hav 1 or three malls. Besides those swanky malls looks too nice doesnt go with my usual Jeans and Tee get up on weekends! hehehehe. And where in the world can u find everything n one roof?
and a magnificent view of the bay?

^^Right. As if they know what's inside. They base everything from posts and pictures. And they're saying that their Beard Papa was the first in SEA. Promenade's Beard Papa was already up long before the Paragon opened.

Haha, Paragon is better in some ways...and MoA in other ways. They're two different malls.

good points... and if there is an advantage for MoA, I think it would be the stunnung view of the manila bay... (as been said before)

500,000 visitors on its opening date is really significant, pero ilan lang kaya ang may binili?

amras
May 23rd, 2006, 04:56 AM
sabihin na nating at least 100,000 lang ang may binili, and each of them spent at least 100 bucks. That's still 10 million pesos.

c0kelitr0
May 23rd, 2006, 04:58 AM
^^ haha that's a very conservative estimate...di nyo ba napansin pag nag mall kayo, wala naman binili then pag-uwi nyo, you realized you spent 500 pesos na pala!

majority kasi ng nagpunta ay mga class CDE. maybe around 65%. Most of them are just walking along EDSA to the site. In fact, pyro olympics has more of the AB crowd. But who cares, this mall was for ABCDE market. Well, a poor fellow like me could always hang around Greenbelt 2 and no one would tell me i don't belong there. :D basta be disciplined lang sana wherever you go.

oh by the way, gues what? on the way there, i noticed some people are going home with some ballons on their hands. some have flowers. i found out later that those flowers are the bouquettes (sp?) used duing the opening ceremony. pagdating namin sa MOA, laspag na yung mga flowers. Pinagkukuha na nila lahat. I wonder who gave them the idea to do so. :( Sana mag-improve over time.

Brisk economy inspires SM Prime

-------------------------------------------------------------------

By Amalia Bandiola-Cabusao

"Asked what their plans are for SM City Davao, Hans Sy said, “you are in for major surprises,” but he refused to elaborate what innovations the company will introduce here."

The company that introduced the word ‘malling’ to the vocabulary of Filipinos broke its own record with the opening of its 25th mall built at a cost of P6.5 billion

In a press conference Saturday, Hans Sy, president of SM Prime Holding Inc. said they have no second thoughts in pouring investment in the retail market as they are confident that the economy will get better with the ballooning Overseas Filipino Workers remittance and the rapidly growing call centers across the country.

Asked what their plans are for SM City Davao, Hans Sy said, “you are in for major surprises,” but he refused to elaborate what innovations the company will introduce here.

“We are a nation of mall-lovers with millions flocking to our air-conditioned malls daily and more on weekends,” he said, adding “we have just opened SM Clark last week and within the year we will be opening two more – SM Supercenter Pasig and SM City Lipa. The SM North Edsa Annex Expansion is also scheduled to open in July 2006.”

The Mall of Asia which is the biggest and most ambitious project to date of blue chip publicly-listed SM Prime Holdings, Inc, opened Sunday, signaling a higher level in the malling concept in this part of the world.

The mall is envisioned to be “the celebration mall” and “a mall for celebrations” in the Philippine and the region. It is billed as the premiere mall of Asia and the Pacific.

Located on a 60-hectare property overlooking Manila Bay, the complex consists of four buildings linked by elevated walkways –Main Mall, the North Parking Building, the South Parking Building, and the Entertainment Center Building.

The Main Mall houses the Food court and large showroom-style retail and dining establishments. The North Parking Building is anchored by Super SM Hypermarket and the South Bulding showcases the SM Department Store. Both parking buildings will have over 5,000 spaces available for private vehicles.

The Entertainment Building will house among others, the country’s first IMAX theater, a special Director’s club screening for exclusive film showings and seven more state-of-the-art cinemas and fine dining restaurants and bars.

The mall’s IMAX is approximately the height of an eight storey building and seats 600 people. It also accommodates the first Olympic-size skating rink in addition to a bowling and billiards of hall and an indoor theater for live performances with a seating capacity of 900.
The Entertainment Center Building offers a spectacular view of the Manila Bay from its row of restaurants and other activities ranging from live performances to fireworks exhibition which is expected to draw both local and international client.

SM City Davao opened in November 2001 and is the 14th mall of SMPH. ABC

On weekends, the family used to go around different SM malls and do their own inspection. I had a chance to see them in Mega-Mall when I was there in 2001.

I'd appreciate it if someone takes shots of every store and other details of the mall. (like what Chad did in the Siam Paragon threads), thanks.

This is precisely what I want too...Chad did a good job when he photographed the shops individually and I had fun looking at the setup of the shops esp. those high end international brand name shops. I know that not all shops are already opened, but it would be nice if we can photograph at l;east those shops that have opened already lat 21 May 2006. This will also give idea on Filipinos and tourist coming to SM MOA on what to expect there at this point of time.

Ironically, only Ayala Malls have Pinoy-looking models. Gateway Mall, SM and recently, Robinsons use foreign-looking people (except Kris Aquino, Charlene Gonzales and Marc Nelson) to be the face of their malls.

I went to MoA again this afternoon to watch X-Men 3 and was surprised to see that they also have a cinema like the one in Gateway. Yun pala yung director's club with around 30 recliner seats and free popcorn and drinks!

It was nice because you sort of feel like you're in a private screening and the screen is large enough for the room. Though they left the neon lights on the wall on throughout the movie which kinda annoyed me. A ticket costs 300 bucks, same with Gateway :)

What are the washrooms like? I hope its not like the washrooms at SM Fairview!!

The foodcourt washroom in SM Fairview has no toilet seat, toilet paper and is just like hole in the ground, it also really dirty, and it's crowded with guys washing their faces with facial soap :runaway: . That is why I never go to SM fairview even though its the only mall that's near my house in Manila. (never been to Robinsons Novaliches)

I've only been to three SM malls - SM FAIRVIEW, SM MEGAMALL, & SM NORTH EDSA.

since then sm is using american models instead filipino.. un ang dapat nilang baguhin sayang ang dami pa namang magagandang models here in our country!

i think the reason is dahil sa colonial mentality ng mga Filipinos... filipinos like to dwell on the things we dont have... a western look... kung mapapansin niyo ung mga models na sumisikat dito sa pilipinas somehow has one thing western (or foriegn) about him or her...

and the picture they have are cheaper than kung gagawa pa sila ng photoshoot... the pictures they use are stock images... there are catalogues ng mga pictures that their advertising/creatives department have and all they need to do is buy the rights to use the picture they need...

if i'm not mistaken, stock images cost about 50-200 US$ (1000-10,000PhP) which is way cheaper than at least 100,000 PhP for a single photoshoot which may go higher because of the talent fee, professional fee, model fee, equipment rentals, location rentals, catering (yes catering!!)

or it's just for its luxury?

:)

c0kelitr0

^^ Greenbelt is more on the luxury side especially Greenbelt 4...it's where Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Tod's, Bally, DKNY, GUCCI, Burberry, Charriol, Hugo Boss, BVLGARI, etc. are located...

Greenbelt 3 is more on entertainment and dining (for the middle and upper class apparently), and a few mid-to-high end stores...it has some of the hottest bars, clubs and restos in town...

Greenbelt 5 will become the home of top Filipino couturiers...and will of course house some new luxury brands which manila still doesn't have...it's not huge, but it's still big ;)

Mmm...I think it's because Gaysorn caters only to the very very upper class (it's higher than Siam Paragon in terms of luxury) so it's not always the most crowded mall...very exclusive and classy...so ah well...you can't have hi-so crowd coming to do their shopping every single day considering the price of goods there is very very high... :tongue3:

You'll literally die from their donuts too if you've had too much of them. :D

I wonder if SM has any plans to put up lowrise standalone facilities along their promenade a la the coffee shops on Baywalk. Seems like a great place for them, and for al fresco dining.

But the question is, have SM Prime took over Salem? Salem was originally the one who won for the bidding of the development of Esplanade, SM only got 2nd. But here's the catch, there are certain terms in the contract that would allow the second highest bidder to take over them. But I also heard that SM Prime was trying to strike a deal with Salem, but whatever happened to it, I eally don't know. Anyone knows more about this stuff?

[QUOTE=thomasian]I haven't seen SM use local models aside from Charlene Gonzales and Victor Basa which I've seen once for Podium's ad.

SM seldom uses local models because its costly, instead it uses images from IMAGE BANK which is cheaper. And these are not long term ads and only used on promos like quarterly sale. I've seen Brent Javier in one of their SURPLUS ads and a few pinoy models. IMAGE BANK is faster, cheaper and many selections of photos.

BTW, another (SM) mall to overtake MoA in terms of size...

Awed by Mall of Asia? You ain't seen nothing yet
By Jimmy Calapati
Source: Malaya

The country’s biggest shopping mall opened only last Sunday, but its owners and developers said the redevelopment of SM North Edsa will surpass the Mall of Asia.

Hans Sy, president of SM Prime Holdings Inc. said that the company wants its first mall to shine.

"We still have an optimum project at hand. Much bigger than this one," says Hans, son of mall mogul Henry Sy.

The North Edsa project is expected to be over by 2008.

"It will be bigger in actual floor space than the Mall of Asia," Sy added.

The older Sy—‘Tatang" to most employees of SMPHI—first came up with the idea of building a supersized shopping enclave 21 years ago with SM North Edsa.

There is still room for expansion at SM North Edsa since the company was able to buy a former military camp site adjacent to the complex.

A new building within the complex will soon be opened.

SM now has 24 malls.

The Mall of Asia is so big that it will take one a little over 3 hours to walk around all the 4 buildings and approximately a day just to browse at each outlet. That’s exactly the reason why there is a 24-seater electric vehicle transporting mallers.

The SM Mall of Asia houses an Olympic-sized skating rink, 600 local and foreign shops, 150 dining establishments, the first IMAX theater in the country with a screen the height of an 8-storey building, a bowling and billiard center, a music hall and a spectacular view of Manila’s famous sunset.

Premiere establishments have chosen to locate their flagship stores into what is billed to be the ultimate in mall experience.

"We are 90 percent occupied," says Annie Garcia, president of SM Supermalls.

Garcia added that there is a very good mix of local and international brands. "You’ll find high-end shops like Zara, Lacoste, Guess, or Mango mixed with local brands. The mall really has everything for everyone."

The SM Mall of Asia measures 400,000 square meters on a 19-hectare property.

Located on a reclaimed area that is now known as the Bay City in Pasay City, the giant project was built at a cost of P6.5 billion and it took two and a half years to build using roughly 3.1 million bags of cement, 31,400 tons of reinforcing steel bars and 6,000 tons of structural steel.

Sy said that they doubled every international building standards, making the mall a safe enclave for everyone.

"The rumors (of a sinking building) are not true. The building can even withstand winds of up to 400 km/hr," Sy said.

The Mall of Asia was designed by Arquitectonica, a US-based designing firm which did, among others, Festival Walk in Hong Kong, American Airlines Arena in Miami for the Miami Heat, Westin Hotel in Times Square, New York and Disney All Star Resort in Florida.

The SM Mall of Asia is envisioned to be "the destination mall" and a "mall for celebrations" in the Philippines, if not in the region.

"We have here a major transportation depot that can take shoppers in and out of the area," Garcia added. There are even plans of opening the depot to bus operators from Lucena and Laguna.

But even with its massive scale, Mall of Asia is only the first phase in a masterplanned development that combines residential, commercial and retail establishments in one contiguous area—the SM Central Business Park.

The SM CBP will be the most significant business district in Metro Manila. This ideal mix of shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment that is the signature of SM Supermalls will be complemented by other components of this mixed-use facility.

Adjacent multi-function spaces such as the Maitrade Convention and Expo Center—the country’s first privately-owned and operated convention and exhibition center with retail shops along its perimeter; and One-E-Com Center—a ten-storey, fully-wired building specially designed for call center and other business process outsourcing companies, will soon rise at the SM Central Business Park, developed by SM Investments Corp.

Other developments in the masterplan includes hotels, office and residential clusters, a coliseum for sporting events and entertainment shows as well as a ferry terminal.

BTW, they changed SM Megamall's name to SM Megamall Ortigas.
Why the addition of 'Ortigas'? Could they be planning to relaunch SM North EDSA as SM Megamall North EDSA?

^^maybe because they just realize it is the only SM mall with no mention of its location (except Mall of Asia). lol. i think during the glory days of Megamall when everyone knows it is located in Ortigas, they don't find it necessary to put the "Ortigas" name. just like the brand new Mall of Asia, we all know it's in Pasay... :)

why don't they just drop the word "Megamall" instead? hehe kiddin'!

i've been thinking.. what if Henry Sy builds another mall bigger than MOA?? i bet they'll rename SM Mall of Asia to SM Mall of Pasay

SM Mega Noma (Megamall North of Makati)
SM Mega NoMoA (Megamall North of MoA)
SM Mega NoE (Megamall North EDSA)
SM Mega Notrinoma (Megamall North of Trinoma)
or just retain the name and make it an acronym - SM NoE

Awed by Mall of Asia? You ain't seen nothing yet
By Jimmy Calapati
Source: Malaya

The SM Mall of Asia houses an Olympic-sized skating rink, 600 local and foreign shops, 150 dining establishments, the first IMAX theater in the country with a screen the height of an 8-storey building, a bowling and billiard center, a music hall and a spectacular view of Manila’s famous sunset.

is there really a bowling/billiards center? i searched wikipedia and the article says something about the Pacifica Entertainment Plaza.

request naman o, can someone post a map of the MoA? really need it if i'm going to visit again. :)

Actually, SM Megamall had the Ortigas already back in 2002 or 2003, I saw it in their billboards. On those years, they also renamed SM Southmall to SM Southmall Las Piñas, SM City to SM City North EDSA. I think SM City Pampanga will be renamed to SM City San Fernando too... ;)

SM Mega Edsa (pangit)

SM North Point (pangit pa rin)

SM Supercity North Edsa (yan!)

Kasi may Department store at supermarket na (na laging nasa SM Cities), may hypermarket pa daw(usually found on SM Supercenters and MoA)!

Went there yesterday :) I agree that you have to go there to see how massive it is. Especially that Globe in the middle. Saw a number of tourists there yesterday. They keep pointing at the lobby saying it is magnificent or "really nice view", they also like the view of the bay from the entertainment mall. If there's anything i am dissappointed at, it's the size of the SM department store, the area looks so cramped, it doesn't give justice to the wall and ceiling designs. I only used my phonecam hence the poor quality of the pics.

Once one start it, others will follow or more than the first one. Kaya you young, guys, youll enjoy the supermalls in the Philippines in ten years time from now on....... Mall of Asia draws 1M on opening day
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 05/26/2006

The 386,000-square meter Mall of Asia – the SM Group’s largest and most ambitious project to date – attracted nearly one million people on its grand opening last Sunday, May 22.

Mall of Asia operations manager Steven Tan said pedestrian traffic during opening day was bigger than the average weekend traffic of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong and SM North Edsa in Quezon City combined.

Mall of Asia, SM Prime Holdings Inc.’s 25th shopping mall, is located at the 60-hectare SM Central Business Park, overlooking the Manila Bay.

Tan said first day sales were brisk not just for the mall’s main anchors, SM Department Store and SM Hypermarket, but also for the other tenants. "The turnover was fast for most of the restaurants and other dining establishments. Some of the restaurants recorded their highest sales ever on that day."

"The Mall of Asia will redefine the concept of malling. It is more than just a shopping center. It will be a destination experience," he added.

Tan said there will be daily laser light shows while the fireworks display will be held every Friday and Saturday for the rest of the year.

Designed by American firm Arquitectonica, the Mall of Asia is a four-building super structure linked by elevated walkways.

As far as I know,

SM City (name for the regular SM Mall)
SM Supercenter (name for the not so big SM Mall that has huge potential for future expansion)
SM Southmall (name for SM's southernmost Mall in Metro Manila)
SM Megamall (name for SM's largest mall (in the past))
SM Mall of Asia (name for SM's largest and most ambitious project to date)

Eh, mas malaki sa Mall of Asia, so I suggest, SM Mall of the World. lol

It's good to know na SM is updating it's look. Nakita nyo n ba yung THE GARDEN SA SM North EDSA. Rosa may Butterfly Garden nman o di ba. Have u seen SM Clark? It's very nice modern looking. Parang airport.

been to MoA last saturday night to watch Xmen... boy.. the mall is packed... and the airconditioning didn't catch up with the big crowd....

my comments to the mall is that some of the fast food shops are way too small...the Shakey's, Wendy's, etc those in the South Parking Mall... and so is the Cinema area... the place is narrow... before watching the film, we had to queue up since they're guaranteed seating....people bunched up with the narrow place specially when a another film starts the same time as ours... mas maluwag pa ang cinema area ng Megamall...

It was made to compliment Uniwide's Coastal Mall...LOL

I remember seeing an earlier design which looked like one of SM North Edsa's annexes. Pangit talaga.

I also saw a 5-level, plain white box design, ang pangit, buti na lang maganda yung final design.

Take a look at these pics I took. The designs a bit similar. The Festival Walk in HK and SM Mall of Asia are both designed by Arquitectonica

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/O29/Comp2.jpg
Atriums

The atrium of Festival Walk looks more like that of Podium's. Sabagay arquitectonica din kasi may gawa nun eh.

SMPHI Stock

* The development puts to rest some investor concerns of another delay in the opening, or an unsuccessful opening day.

* This reinforces our Outperform rating on SM Prime, which offers attractive valuations along with a good dividend yield.

-----------------------------------

Grabe, 500,000 on the opening day! :D

Bumili ako ng 5,000 shares sa SM Prime at 8.50, for a total value of 39,500. Now the SM Prime Shares is trading at 7.90. I lost a total of P3,000 from the day i bought the SM Prime shares...i think this is only temporary as investors would flock the stock market soon...the Philippines stock market is down due to concerns of rising interest rates in the States...I think the market will recover soon, and i thnk SM Prime would be one of the stocks that investors would be gobbling up in a few days. ^^ Yeah, the title of that article (Awed by Mall of Asia, you've seen nothing yet...) is not quite nice... I'm not saying that SM-NoE doesn't deserve some recognition pero parang pinapalabas na kahit bago ang MoA eh mawawala agad ang kupas nito. :)

May 29th, 2006, 09:14 AM
^^ hindi naman siguro...both malls are very far from each other...mahirap namang dadayo pa mga taga north sa south all the time...the north area also needs a giant mall of its own na maganda rin...and what's the daytime population ng metro manila, 20 million? kelangan i-take advantage ng SM Prime yang ganyang karaming tao...kelangan talaga pagandahin nila yang SM North EdSA, ngayon pa eh may TriNoMa na...mawawalan sila ng mga customers...

JustHorace
May 29th, 2006, 09:37 AM
^^right! There's one SM super mall na sa south MM (MoA), north (SM NoE), and in-between (SM Megamall)

I just hope na "wow" ang makikita nating bagong SM North EDSA, considering the fact that they are going to demolish two buildings (can't they make that four?). Kaya siguro may cinemas and hypermarket ang Annex 3, kasi isasara siguro ang main mall.

richard24
May 29th, 2006, 09:43 AM
i hope they demolish the old annex... it looks ugly. (the one on the left side ata nung main mall..)

and replace it with a grand spanking new one... :colgate:

Sabagay 20 years na ang SM City North Edsa , outdated na nga ang design . Prompted na rin siguro ng entry ng TriNoMa sa North Edsa area . Galing talaga ng SM , hinintay muna nila na halos patapos na ang TriNoMa , para thet will really outshine this upcoming mall in two years time . Bravo !!

The SM Mall of Asia is a shopping mall that opened on May 21, 2006 (originally scheduled for August 30, 2005) and is the Philippines' largest mall, surpassing its cousin, SM Megamall, and one of the biggest malls in the world in terms of gross floor size. It is owned and operated by SM Prime Holdings, under the management of Henry Sy, a Filipino-Chinese business tycoon — regarded as one of the wealthiest men in Asia. (Forbes 2006 ranks him as the 14th richest person in southeast Asia, and "Henry Sy and family" as 74th richest person in the "Asia and Australia" region)

The Mall of Asia was constructed within the reclamation area, west of Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City, aptly nicknamed "Bay City". It is built on 19.5 hectares of reclaimed land and has a gross floor area of 386,000 square meters. The mall is located at the southmost tip of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. A roundabout was constructed in the front of the mall with a huge bronze globe similar to Universal Studios. An esplanade was constructed at the back of the mall where it served as the observation center for the First World Pyro Olympics in December 2005.

Features
The mall consists of four buildings interconnected by walkways: the Main Mall, Entertainment Mall, and the North and South Carpark Buildings. One of its unique features is a 20-seater tram to make it easier for shoppers to go around. The management’s priority is to make sure shoppers will not get lost inside the mall. There will be two concierge desks—one in the Main Mall and another in the Entertainment Mall. Maps will be given out, and there will be signs aplenty. The Main Mall will include shopping and dining establishments, the food court. The South Parking building will house the SM Department store and half of the 5,000 parking spaces while the North Parking building will include the SM Hypermarket, a spacious office space and more dining areas.

The mall’s newest attraction is the Pacifica Entertainment Plaza. Besides bowling and billiards facilities, the building will house 10 theaters, including a Director’s Club and the first ever IMAX theater in the Philippines. The theater, named as the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theater would also have the largest screen in the Philippines at 22 x 30 meters, similar to the height of an eight-story building. The mall also features an Olympic sized skating rink and a science museum. The mall also provides office space. Dell International Services, a subsidiary of Dell, Inc. occupies a 13,470.5-square meter area at the second floor of the north parking building of the mall.

It is now set to become the third largest mall in the world, behind the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and the Golden Resources Mall in Beijing, China.

Construction
The mall is the centerpiece project of the SM Prime at the newly developed SM Central Business Park, where five one-story buildings serve as the company's corporate offices. Construction began in mid-2002 right after the completion of its corporate offices. Construction slowed down awaiting availability of funds. In early 2004 SM Prime accelerated the construction when the Ty family, who owns Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company successfully erected a leisure park, medical school, dining strip and residential complex at Macapagal Boulevard, adjacent to the SM Central Business Park. The mall would have opened before Christmas Day of 2005 but had been delayed due to hitches in the delivery of construction materials. Frequent rains in the last quarter of 2005 also delayed the turnover of mall space to tenants. SM Prime decided to move the opening date to March 3, 2006.

On February 27, 2006, local newspaper Manila Standard Today, reported that a team of Pasay City engineers found huge cracks underneath the structure, which was causing the structure to vibrate. When questioned about the inspection, the Pasay City Engineering Department has categorically denied making any statement regarding defects in the Mall of Asia. Engineer Edwin Javaluyas, Pasay City engineering officer, in his letter to SM Prime Holdings Inc., said he never stated that the city hall’s engineering department inspected the Mall of Asia on February 23, 2006.

SM Prime however decided to move the opening to May 21, 2006. Jeffrey Lim, corporate information officer of SM Prime Holdings, emphasized that a rescheduling of the mall’s opening was made to give the company an opportunity to allow more tenants to open shops and denied that the change was due to structural defects.

On May 20, 2006, the mall was officially inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with a special screening of Everest in the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theater. The movie was shown three days after tri-athlete Leo Oracion became the first Filipino to reach the treacherous mountain’s summit.

Expansion Plans
Adjacent to the south parking building, a two-hectare area has been allocated for the site of a 16,000-capacity multi-purpose coliseum/arena for sporting events, concerts and entertainment shows. It is set to rival the 50-year old Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. Furthermore, a planned convention/conference center measuring 12,000 square meters will be built as an attractive venue for major conferences and trade exhibits. The convention center once constructed, will be a newer alternative to the Philippine International Convention Center, erected in 1976, located a few blocks away. Along with this, two hotel developments are also planned for construction.

Also set to the right of the north parking building, The SM iCity is a 69,300-square-meter area allocated to serve as a prime venue for companies engaged in software development and IT-enabled services. A mix of single and multi-storey buildings will be developed to provide for the office and workspace requirements of prospective IT-related locator companies and for support office and backroom operations of business process outsourcing. The first building, OneE-comCenter, began March 8, 2006 and is scheduled for completion in July 2007.
