True. The more plain, and neutral it looks, then the more the exhibitors can dress it up with whatever design they want and not worry about the design of the hall clashing with theirs.

Buti nga mataas pa yung ceiling eh, they can build modules with several levels...

i think hindi pwede gawin ng structural engineer o mag design ang Architect ng walang column sa gitna... kasi ang buong itaas ng Exhibition Halls (Hall 1 to Hall 4) ay convention Center with five function rooms that can be combined so the area can seat anywhere from 500 to 5,000 persons. There is also a theater room that is explicitly configured for special sessions that require elevated seating arangements.

SM to open 29th RP mall in Taytay (http://www.smprime.com/News.php?BlurbID=939)
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña, 8 Nov 2007
Source: Phil. Star
Shopping mall giant SM Prime Holdings Inc. will open SM City Taytay, its first mall in the province of Rizal, tomorrow, Nov. 9. In a statement, SM Prime said the newest structure, with a gross floor area of 91,920 square meters and stands on 38,525 square meters of land, brings to 29 the total number of SM malls across the country.

SM City Taytay has a leasable area of 42,459 sqm and will have as its main tenants SM Department Store, SM Hypermarket, a food court and three cinemas which will have a combined seating capacity of 1,250.

“We welcome the newest member of our SM Supermalls family: SM City Taytay. Taytay is recognized as the garments capital of the Philippines. It has a large residential community and it houses the biggest school campus of one of the country’s leading colleges.

It is easily accessible from various points of Metro Manila, through major thoroughfares such as the Ortigas Avenue Extension and the Sumulong Highway, which makes it an ideal location for an SM City in the province of Rizal,” said SM Prime president Hans Sy.

Other malls slated for opening before the end of the year are SM Supercenter Muntinlupa, a community mall similar to SM Supercenter Pasig, which has SM Hypermarket at its anchor tenant; and San Miguel by the Bay, a strip mall located at the Esplanade fronting the SM Mall of Asia complex.

SM Prime is also currently expanding SM City Cebu to meet the growing demands of residents in the area. By end-2007, total gross floor area for all SM malls is projected to reach 3.9 million square meters.

@thomasian, i agree in what you've said The Creativeness/ Functionality or Uniqueness that you're looking for lies in the hands of the exhibitor/s, not on the hall owner's.. it really depends on the people that will utilize the area. if you will not make use of the resources there then its your loss. the look and feel of the place is important, but its secondary to its real purpose -- convention.

also, any update on the sm mall of asia port? i hope they place ferry boats to batangas port too, to connect to puerto galera? but would the trip be longer if it originated there in MOA? what trips are available? is there one to correigdor? all answered by google, i know... just needing some direct source... hehe.. :)

There is nothing wrong with the tiles. Convention center traffic is not only limited to foot traffic. During set up of big conventions and depending on the convention, there will be times that heavy machinery will be used to bring in supplies, merchandise and building materials to set up each booth.

SMX is being practical, they need not use expensive Travertine tiles and Marble tiles to spruce up the flooring of their convention center. SMX is definitely a nice, world class convention center comparable to the ones we have in Las Vegas albeit smaller in scale.

I went to the SMX Convention Center yesterday and It was bustling with activity already. Mukhang punong puno kagad! It's very promising.

I saw a lot of nice things. Yung mga guards, janitors etc, sobrang GOOD MORNING. Very pleasant. I can't say the same with the people in the Admin. When I asked for a brochure medyo hindi nag-smile ang karamihan. Maybe their just stressed out with the activities. But hey you just opened last MONDAY!

Anyway, sad to say, I must agree with some of the people here.. Design wise, there is much to be desired.

Walking thru the majority of the SMX felt like I was in SM Southmall. No kidding.. From the kisame design, yung mga design ng Function Hall numbers.. VERY SM. But hey, it's an SM Development anyway..

But if its branding itself as the EXCEPTIONAL XTRAORDINARY MEETING PLACE IN ASIA dapat yata they should have given more design wise.

Reading thru the brochure wala akong nakitang "Translation Services Option" Sana in the near future meron rin sila nito. Our company yearly organizes a regional conference and last July we had it at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (http://202.179.97.117/index_flash.html) and it was really an awesome and elegant place. Visit the link for you to see.. Sana maging ganto rin yung SMX soon. Para if we have it here in Manila soon meron din tayong kasing ganda ng KLCC.

Well, as I earlier mentioned, they just opened last Monday and probably they will have more things in store for us..

It's a standard for convention facilities, either you put vinyl tiles or you paint it with epoxy. Just imagine when you install ceramic tiles...The very reason why in malls, it is required when there are car exhibits that exhibitors provide a platform. The purpose is to distribute the load and not affect the tiles below...gets?

And during big exhibits, it is a requirement for exhibitors that they provide carpets or platforms.

SMX Convention Center is a pvt sector funded facility whereas KLCC is government funded if Im not mistaken so budget wise, more was allocated for a convention center named after Malaysia's premier city.

SM has improved the convention facilities in the country, it will be able to host and attract bigger convention market for the country with its brand spanking new facility.

Kaya nga sana, SM has given more to this project if it wants to make SMX as the XCEPTIONAL, XTRAORDINARY Meeting Place in "ASIA"

How can we attract International Conferences kung translation services lang na very basic parang wala atang i-ooffer..

But I agree with you that it has raised the bar for Convention Facilities in the Philippines. PICC during the 70's is the most modern in ASIA. With SMX.. at least medyo tumaas ang kalidad ng convention facilities.

Given this was the first venture of SM on building a convention center, not an exhibit hall in a section of a mall, it sure has more kinks to iron out considering it was just recently opened. Goodluck! Nice facility nonetheless.

The way I look at it, the Manila Bay area from Intramuros all the way to the the Mall of Asia Complex and the rest of the reclaimed land would be the Downtown Area of Metro Manila, Ortigas Business District would be Midtown and the financial center in Makati including Rockwell Center with the Global City in Taguig would be the Uptown area of Metro Manila.

Yap joins booming property business
By Elaine Ruzul S. Ramos
Manila Standard
http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=business3_sept19_2007

Publishing magnate Emilio Yap has joined the ranks of taipans Lucio Tan, Henry Sy, John Gokongwei and Andrew Gotianun in the booming property development business.

Legacy Ventures Realty and Development Inc., which is controlled by the heirs of Yap, has launched yesterday the high-end Sentosia project, the group’s first foray into the property business.

Company president Carlos Wilfredo Pineda said the group spent close to P1 billion for the project, including P350 million for the construction cost.

Sentosia, an exclusive horizontal condominium-townhouse development, sits on 1.7 hectares of prime real estate along Macapagal Avenue in the Bay Area.

Pineda said the entire project, involving a total of 127 units, would be completed in three phases.

Phase 1, comprising 24 units, is scheduled for completion in November 2007. The units will be turned over to the owners in December.

Phase 2, which involves 32 units, will be completed in December.

All 127 units will be finished by December 2008. The company is now doing the structural construction for Phase 3 of the project.

All units will have three floors, three bedrooms, two-car garage and an optional provision for an attic. Unit sizes range from 161 square meters to 186 sq. m.

At P52,000 per square meter, the smallest unit of 161 sq. m. will cost around P8.372 million.

Pineda said Sentosia would be the first among several projects to be undertaken by the group. A mid-rise condominium project in the Marina area near the Sentosia project, and another mid-rise condominium development in Otis, Manila right across the Robinsons mall, are in the pipeline.

With the proliferation of similar property developments in the country, Pineda said the company is luring buyers by guaranteeing the appreciation of their units within a year from the date of turnover.

“In case there is no appreciation within one year from date of turnover, Legacy Ventures agrees to buy back your unit at the original purchase price,” said Pineda during a presentation yesterday.

The developer also assured buyers the units would be turned over within six months or it pays the interest on the house payment until completion.

Pineda said these guarantees to homeowners were designed to respond to the emerging risks of the current real estate boom. The company has signed an agreement with Philtrust Bank, which is also controlled by the Yap family, for the guarantee.

Sentosia’s horizontal condominium concept makes real estate ownership possible for expatriates through a condominium certificate of title that allows co-ownership of land.

The company, incorporated in May 2005, is headed by Emilio Yap III as chairman, the grandson of Yap, who, in turn, controls Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp., Euro-Phil Laboratories and the Manila Hotel.

Bay living at Sentosia: The insider’s guide
Manila Bulletin
http://www.mb.com.ph/SPACE20070920103433.html

Few people will ever have a weekend as unique as absorbing high art at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, ambling along the street culture of one of the world’s biggest malls, partying at the wildest club in town and bird-watching in the grasslands by the bay.

Except of course if they live at Sentosia.

Bay living has never been so well-suited in the Philippines with Sentosia Condominiums, an exclusive condominium development located along Diosdado Macapagal Avenue.

With the adjacent multi-million Bay City project that is developing parts of the four cities and one municipality surrounding Manila Bay into a gigantic commercial district and the international airports only 15 minutes away, Sentosia Condominiums offers residents unlimited potential for leisure and entertainment in addition to the beautiful seascapes, cool ocean breeze, temperate night air and the fresh mornings.

Sentosia conveniently has three routes: Edsa-Buendia, Magallanes and South Super Highway. For the athletic, Sentosia has infinite space for jogging, walking pets and picnicking.

Residents will also be happy to know that the Bay City being developed nearby will transform the 750-hectare coastline into a globally competitive cosmopolitan hub that features a sports club, a community center, open parks and a championship 18-hole golf course designed by the international architect Robert Trent, Jr.

Centers for art are close by, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Museum and The World Trade Center.

Upon completion of the multi-million Bay City project, the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex will be organized into two zones, an Art Zone and a Commercial Zone.

Blue Wave and Harbor Square have a number of dining choices. A few minutes drive away is the bohemian nightlife at Malate. Plans for pocket parks and a buffer zone 50-meters from the shoreline devoted to public recreation and al fresco dining are also included in the developing Bay City to create a vibrant waterfront for residents.

There are currently two types of shopping at Sentosia: the bargain centers such as the Coastal Mall and the HK Sun Plaza, and massive Mall of Asia.

Soon though there will also be a business district that will offer tourist-oriented, premium names in retail.

The Bay Area in San Francisco is best known for the bay lifestyle that focuses on family and community-friendly outdoor activities with the spirit of adventure and leisure.

Bay neighborhoods are essentially close-knit communities where living well and connecting with nature are of utmost importance.

The concept just recently found its way to the Philippines, as seen in the numerous developments around Manila Bay.

With a novel horizontal condominium concept, Sentosia offers residents high-rise convenience without them being stacked between their neighbors. Sentosia residences are three-level homes with a two-car parking garage, an attic, wide indoor floor areas and large windows that let in the breeze and natural light.

The condos were meticulously planned with geometric modern architecture complemented by Asian-inspired fixtures and interior finishes are separated by streets 18 feet wide.

Hmmm....huge mall + convention center + office tower + world-class hotel + science center + bay and sunset view.

SM seems to be implementing its grand vision in a swift and methodical manner.

The SM Complex might just steal the thunder away from Makati and Fort Bonifacio in a short time unless Ayala does something to prevent that.

Exciting times for the Philippine real estate scene!

^^^Henry Sy is definitely a businessman. With the opening of the SMX convention center, next in line would be lodging, it would have been better if both the hotel and convention center were built at the same time. Anyway, this side of the bay area is definitely evolving into a world class destination.

An arena this side of Metro Manila would definitely make the complex an even better destination, it could host world class acts that can give Filipinos quality entertainment. Entertainment venues around town are scarce and a bit tired.

Kagagaling ko lang sa KL last weekend. they have this new mall called Pavillion which is like 10 times the size of Greenbelt. Its Ultra High end. Isipin nyo ang Glorietta with like 7 stories. Malaki sobra. Nakapunta din ako sa Berjaya Times Square na sobrang laki na mga 10 stories ata.

Both have maps and concierge services. Meron bang gantong service sa MOA? Sana meron din..

Kaya ultra high end yung the podium dahil most of the retails shops design was done by foreign designers not local and local cannot compete with this kind of design standards.

Malaki lang yung tingin mo but not that big dahil maraming open spaces and high ceilings. Mean a lot of wasted space kaya malaking tignan. Shop lot not compare to us masyadong cramp and low ceiling kaya akala mo maliit.

^^^ again, marketing people = no originality. please rebrand your projects and make it more filipino..

Many in this forum are all looking to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) as the future business capital of Metro Manila, and indeed, the Philippines.
Would you think it's possible - just possible - that SM Bay Central and the entire Bay City complex might just squeak by and catch everyone by surprise?

this is not a remote possibility. when everyone else is focused on the development of central metro manila.. the manila bay city area might catch them by surprise.. so much potential for this area.. i hope it will not go to waste... crossing my fingers too..

Looks like a nice choice of material on the fountain, black granite. A short clip on you tube video shows the fountain and it is actually nice. They could still work on the water feature though but definitely a nice addition at the MOA.

Shopping Center of the Year

By , 11 Dec 2007
Source: Phil. Star

The SM Mall of Asia recently received the Philippine Retailers Association’s Shopping Center of the Year Award during its 2007 Outstanding Filipino Retailers and Shopping Centers of the Year Night held recently at the Crowne Plaza in Ortigas.

This is second time that an SM Supermall has been cited by the PRA since it launched the Shopping Center of the Year Award in 2002, SM City Baguio was earlier cited in 2005.

Envisioned as the premier destination mall in the Pacific Region, The SM Mall of Asia has raised the standards of shopping, leisure, and entertainment in the Philippines. Located in the scenic Bay City development along Roxas Boulevard in Metro Manila, it has a gross floor area of 400,000 square meters, making it the third largest mall in the world.

The complex consists of four buildings linked by elevated walk ways- the Main Mall, the North Parking Building and the South Parking Building and the Entertainment Center. With over 600 shops and 150 restaurants, it is the ultimate shopping experience.

The Main Mall includes shops and restaurants, the Food Court, and the Country’s first Olympic sized ice skating rink.

The South parking Building houses the SM Department Store, the North Parking Building includes the SM Hypermarket, two if its major anchors. The Entertainment Center Building Offers a spectacular view of Manila Bay from its trendy row of restaurants. The country’s first IMAX Theater is another attraction in the Entertainment Center, as are its 10 cinemas, including a Director’s Club for private viewing and a Centerstage for live performances.

Getting around the mall is easy. A tram takes customers around the perimeter of the mall, while elderly and handicapped can use of golf carts in the mall. The SM Mall of Asia has 5,000 indoor parking slots as well as outdoor parking facilities in for customer convenience. A transport terminal servicing destinations in Metro Manila and other areas in Luzon, as well as a tax bay make traveling from the very accessible.

Since it opened its doors to a record one million customers during opening day in May 2006, the mall which SM founder and Chairman Henry Sy, Sr. has called “the greatest project of my life” created a lot of excitement in the local shopping centers scene. It has also grown to include a fully computerized Bowling Center and more recently a Science and Discovery that includes a planetarium and the world class SMX Convention Center.

PAGCOR's Bagong Nayon Pilipino Entertainment City
To The Point
Emil Jurado
http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=emilJurado_jan1_2008

Another project under the Arroyo administration—Pagcor’s Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City Manila in Bay City, the 120-hectare Roxas Boulevard reclamation—will be up in two years or so. It is Pagcor’s answer to the $98 billion global gaming and entertainment industry in Asia, now being monopolized by Macau, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia. To get a slice of the pie is more than the dream of Pagcor’s chairman and chief executive Ephraim Genuino, who conceptualized the project.

The project, whose terms of reference have already been finalized after Asian, American and European gaming and entertainment giants showed keen interest, could cost from $10 billion to $15 billion.

More than a venue for world-class gaming and entertainment, Genuino’s brainchild will have theme parks, luxury hotels, residential villages, convention and sports centers, shopping malls, golf course, a hospital district, state-of-the-art theaters, race tracks, gaming centers, waste management facility, marina and a boardwalk, a cultural center and of course, the Bagong Nayong Pilipino for tourists.

This is a project I can support because gaming and entertainment is now the name of the game in fueling tourism. This has been observed in Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand. I still believe that tourism is the country’s engine of growth.

The project aims to provide more than 200,000 jobs and boost related industries and businesses, like hotel and hospitality.

Pagcor now is the third biggest revenue-generating state-owned entity. With this project, Pagcor could well be the biggest income generator for government.

RP’s next premier district
PhilStar
http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Real%20Estate&p=49&type=2&sec=37&aid=2008010321

“Promoting Philippine tourism is the most important job this country has. It is through tourism that we can compete in the global marketplace,” said Henry Sy Sr.

The words of the Sy family patriarch are more than just words of wisdom… they are a guiding vision. And such a vision is breathing life into SM Investments Corporation’s (SMIC) latest project — the Mall of Asia Complex.

The Mall of Asia Complex is envisioned to be the country’s premier business and tourism district, situated in the coast of Manila Bay. The 60-hectare mixed-use development will integrate technologically advanced infrastructure with office, retail, institutional, residential and leisure components. The project is expected to boost the country’s tourism industry and redefine Manila’s place among the new and exciting urban centers of Asia.

At the center of this emerging business district lies the SM Mall of Asia. The 386,000-square meter shopping complex showcases a variety of stores and live entertainment venues, al fresco dining spaces, and interaction areas for the culture and the arts. Tagged as the largest mall in the Philippines, the SM Mall of Asia offers the ultimate shopping experience with the country’s first IMAX theater, an Olympic-sized ice skating rink, and an upcoming aquarium.

Just a few steps away from the SM Mall of Asia are the SM Corporate offices, which consist of six sprawling one-storey buildings. These offices presently house the corporate offices of the SM Group with a daily population of 3,000 personnel and around 1,500 suppliers, clients and applicants.

On the southern portion of the complex lies the Shrine of Jesus Church, which has been a favored venue for weddings and other Catholic ceremonies.

Connecting via a pedestrian bridge from the north side of the SM Mall of Asia is the OneE-com Center. The center is a 10-storey contemporary building designed for e-commerce, contact centers, BPO companies, and specialized office uses. Among the tenants of the OneE-com Center is the 16th club of Fitness First Philippines, Inc, which will occupy the building’s first and second floors.

Also opened last November at the Mall of Asia Complex was the SMX Convention Center — a world-class venue consisting of open exhibition areas, multi-functional halls and flexible meeting rooms with modern exposition amenities for major conference and trade exhibits. The three-storey, 46,000-square meter building with basement and parking, features second level commercial shops and a pedestrian bridgeway leading to the SM Mall of Asia. The SMX Convention Center is envisioned to be the country’s premier destination for both local and international trade and cultural events.

For those looking for the finest boardwalk experience, the Mall of Asia Complex offers The Esplanade. The 1.5-kilometer strip of fully-landscaped open-space will be allocated to house retail and entertainment establishments and can accommodate up to 800 guests (banquet set-up). The entire stretch of the promenade will have jogging paths, bike trails, playing courts, and outdoor restaurants.

Another major development project at the Mall of Asia Complex is the SM Arena, a sprawling indoor facility for big-time sports and entertainment events that can seat over 16,000 spectators. This expansive arena is expected to be the venue of choice of major gigs of well-known international artists in the music and entertainment industries.

In addition, the Mall of Asia Complex inaugurated the SM Mall of Asia Science and Discovery Center last October 10, 2007 — the first of its kind themed-park devoted solely to science and technology. A partnership between SM Prime Holdings and US-based Leisure Entertainment Consultancy, the SM Mall of Asia Science and Discovery Center features a digital planetarium and a wide range of technology and science-themed presentations and exhibits.

Likewise in the pipeline are the construction of the SM Ferry, which will feature a modern ferry terminal to service guests and tourists who wish to travel to Cavite City and Bataan, or to SMIC’s planned eco-tourism development estate, the Hamilo Coast in Nasugbu, Batangas; the SM Land Showroom will showcase the resort and residential features of the Hamilo estate; and a leisure strip area set to soft-open by next month where people can converge and unwind after a hard day’s work and look forward to fresh and hip themed-happenings every month with their choice drinks and spirits. The Mall of Asia Complex will also give rise to real property investments such as hotels, upscale offices and full-serviced apartments.

SMIC just recently forged a memorandum of agreement with the Microtel Inns and Suites hotel group to put up a 150-room hotel strategically located near the SMX Convention Center and the Mall of Asia. Also in the pipeline is the Radisson Hotel set to rise in October 2009.

These are but a glimpse of the many exciting things that the Mall of Asia Complex has to offer. As the country’s property sector continues to recover, SMIC is strategically positioned for the resurgence. Macroeconomic fundamentals indicate the readiness of the Mall of Asia Complex for a new well-planned and modern business and tourist destination.

You're accusing a group of people of insensitivity and failing to note that these "first world" people are also the ones helping Filipinos in time of need. Coral Cay and Greenpeace are great examples of volunteers from "first world" nations advocating the importance of respect for the environment and at the same time lending a hand in cleaning up the mess.

What made you say people from industrialised nations equate "inferior third world mentality" as the reason behind the garbage and litter problems in the Philippines. Would you mind explaining this logic to your readers?

dapat ibalik yung patakaran nung martial law, anybody caught littering are asked to stand in the middle of the street sa center island and sing the national anthem outloud and recite the panatang makabayan. For more severe crimes they will have to perform community service like gardening and pulling weeds and/or clean the street for a week. That should teach them. And of course govt should provice trash cans in more areas and have them maintain regularly. I notice even in malls konti lang ang trash cans kaya people are forced to throw their garbage anywhere.

First thing that greeted me when I stepped out of Madrid airport just after Christmas last year - no, not carols in Spanish, but knee-deep (no kidding) piles of garbage. Also as of now, the LRT's trains and stations are actually cleaner, newer, and "fresher" than most of the older lines in the Paris metro as well.

I don't see it as an excuse for those people not to throw the waste properly. Sometimes I carry my empty cups and other trash around the mall until I can find a waste bin.
