oh damn I totally forgot Mexico.
Mexico was by far less developed when it hosted the olympics than it is today, yet it is still considered a developing country.

just goes to show, even if you host the olympics and the fifa world cup twice, doesn't necessarily mean you'll instantly become a 1st world country.

i think you can immediately put that possibility to rest..dead before it even started. ..there are reasons why developing countries are never host cities..
That's 16 years from now. It was unthinkable 16 years ago in 1992 for China to host the Olympics since she was just opening up to the democratic world. Miracles do happen sometimes.:)

OT muna.

Ey, im just wondering, on the rendering of smbay city, where is the colisseum???

if you go to the SMX area and seen the other side or yung likod ng church...may area pa dun na malaki... part pa rin yun ng SM Bay City..... or should i say yung mga bus na lumiliko papuntang coastal mall.. diba malawak pa yung area? dun malaman itatayo ang coliseum... siguro katabi lang ng Nayong Pilipino ang coliseum..

let's host the Asian Games first. but the Olympic bid is a good p.r. stunt :)

they will try to bid for 2018 games in preparation na to for 2024 i think.. kasi philippines will be hosting 4th asian beach games in 2014 and 2019 sea games

in october 2009 malalaman na ang host for 2016...

this will happen lang kung manggagaling pa rin sa administration side ang magiging bagong presidente natin.. kasi kung manggagaling sa opposition or independent party ang 15th president matutulog ang dream na ito.. lahat ng nagawa ng 14th president mababalewala lang..

by 2024.. so much improvement na ang mangyayari sa pinas.. so many hotels na rin to stay for the visitors... and for sure hindi lang naman magiging congested and events sa manila alone..

if not.. itayo ang stadium sa hacienda luisita... tutal ayaw naman ibigay ng aquino ang lupa sa mga magsasaka e.. diba?! nagmamalinis masyado ang nga aquino kaya gawin na lang into sporting venue.. hehehe

If we can host olympics, that wil be great! That means transportion will be world class, hotel room will increase and the environment within Manila will improve. The olympic committee take consideration these factors before they choice the winner among the bidders. This is the reason why China build the massive T3, improve the subway system, build parks and motivated investor to build hotels around Beijing.

Planning a spookfest (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/10062008/companies06.html)

A GROUP of young professionals who call themselves “The Hints” is paying good money for an overnight stay sometime this month at the Manila Film Center (MFC). For this group who want to experience new things, the idea is to hold a spookfest and see who chickens out before dawn.

As everybody knows, there were 48 workers who died during the construction of MFC in the early 1980s. More “sensitive” people who have visited MFC claim the number of disembodied beings has since tripled to also shelter those lost at sea or murdered along the stretch of reclaimed land before it was developed.

By the way, the ladies washroom is said to be the place with the most action—day or night.

****

Did you know 1: Government workers complain that their loan applications—whether for salary or housing loans—with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) have not been moving as quickly as they should because of so-called glitches in the pension fund’s computer system.

On the contrary, the Union Bank of the Philippines, which manages GSIS’s computer system, claims everything is fine and running.

Did you know 2: Development Bank of the Philippines president Reynaldo David insisted on having the last say at the rather-serious Senate hearing on the exposure of local banks in collapsed Lehman Brothers.

He greeted chairman Sen. Ed Angara a “happy birthday” on behalf of all the bankers. Naturally, everybody cracked up and the hearing ended with everybody smiling.

Did you know 3: Megaworld’s negotiations to enter a joint-venture agreement with Nayong Pilipino (NP) inside the Entertainment City project of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. is still ongoing.

You see, NP head Charito Planas wants the theme park to be operational by this Christmas even if that means that Megaworld Corp. chairman Andrew Tan has to authorize three shifts of workers to work on the project round the clock.

In exchange, Megaworld wants to put up a building of its own from which it can generate income.

Meanwhile, there’s a group which wants to rent the man-made lake inside the old Nayong Pilipino near the international airport. Here’s the business concept: no-charge fishing unless you want to have your catch cooked.

****

AIG’s decision to sell its profitable Philippine operation will not only cover The Philippine-American General and Life Insurance Co. and valuable real estate such as the head office on Paseo de Roxas in Makati, the old sprawling headquarters on UN Avenue in Manila, and Philamlife president Jose Cuisia Jr.’s favorite office near his Alabang home.

AIG also has a savings bank, which rebranded only late last year under former Citibank consumer banker Joven Reyes.

And there are also AIG’s investments, including those in Shopwise (the hypermarket concept of the Tantoco Group of Rustan’s) and in Stradcom (at least for the Land Transportation Office’s computerization project).

SMIC gets provisional Pagcor license for gaming venture (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?ArticleId=423427&publicationSubCategoryId=66)

SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) the invement holding firm of the Sy family, said it has secured a provisional license from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) to build gaming facilities which will be leased to a foreign casino operator.

In a statement, SMIC said Pagcor’s grant of a provisional license marks the start of the transformation of a 60-hectare property within the Mall of Asia complex along Roxas Boulevard into a world-class business and entertainment destination.

SMIC chief financial officer Jose Sio said the conglomerate, through unit SM Land Inc. will concentrate on providing the public with the best entertainment facilities to attract tourists and the general public. “We will just offer great entertainment value. The gaming side will be provided by an international operator,” he said.

Sio said plans include the establishment of several hotels by leading international hotel chains like the Raddisson and the upscale Regent brands. High-end retail shops, a theater for the performing arts, a sports arena, residential condominium buildings, boutique hotels, and a ferry terminal that will directly link the Mall of Asia complex with SMIC’s Hamilo Coast in Nasugbu, Batangas are also in the pipeline.

SMIC, one of the country’s largest conglomerates with interests in real estate and properties, retail and banking, did not identify the foreign gaming operators they are in talks with.

Earlier reports said SMIC and Asia Pacific Gaming of Australia held exploratory talks for a possible partnership to build a world-class gaming facility in the Philippines.

SMIC, which owns three of the top 10 biggest malls in the world, said the project is in line with the group’s thrust into tourism development.

“We believe in the country’s strong potential in tourism. As such, SM will be at the forefront in providing much-needed infrastructure and facilities for more tourists to enjoy the country’s scenic destinations, while experiencing the warmth of Philippine hospitality,” said SMIC vice-chairman Henry Sy Jr.

SM group gets license for gaming hub

Construction to start in 2009
By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson

SM Investments Corp. has secured a provisional license from the government casino franchise firm Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) to pave the way for development of a world-class entertainment and gaming hub on a 60-hectare property of its second-biggest mall, a company official said.

SMIC got the license Friday from Pagcor and will proceed in 2009 with the first phase of the development, which will cost an estimated P10 billion and include entertainment and gaming facilities and hotels in the Mall of Asia property in the Manila Bay reclamation area, SM executive vice president and chief financial officer Jose T. Sio said.

SM Land Inc., the SM group’s property unit, will develop the entertainment complex, in line with the group’s thrust to venture into tourism development, Sio said.

SMIC vice chairman Henry Sy Jr. said: “We believe in the country’s strong potential in tourism. As such, SM will be at the forefront in providing much-needed infrastructure and facilities for more tourists to enjoy the country’s scenic destinations while experiencing the warmth of Philippine hospitality.”

Sio said the entertainment hub would include a gaming facility on a 10,000-square-meter lot near the Mall of Asia’s Esplanade building. It may consist of two floors and will be operated by an international casino operator, he said.

“There is strong demand for gaming,” Sio said. “When tourists come here, they look for places to be entertained.”

The entertainment hub will include hotels that will be operated by the international chain Radisson and the luxury brand Regent, and a theater for the performing arts, he said.

There will also be a residential component, and a ferry terminal that will directly link the Mall of Asia complex with the SM group’s Hamilo Coast resort project in Batangas province, south of Manila, he added.

SMIC vice president Cora Guidote said the entertainment complex could start construction in the first half of next year.

Despite the prevailing global economic downturn, the SM group has continued to expand its retail businesses.

Its mall operations unit, SM Prime Holdings Corp., said Friday it had opened “The Annex” at its SM North EDSA mall in Quezon City, with 90,000 square meters of gross floor area.

With the additional floor area, SM City North EDSA has become the third-biggest shopping mall in the world. Mall of Asia, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, and SM City Cebu in Cebu City rank fourth, seventh, and 11th biggest in the world, respectively. All these malls have occupancy rates of over 95 percent, according to information from the SM group. Edited by INQUIRER.net

SM Mall of Asia is PRA's Shopping Center of the Year
Updated December 14, 2008 12:00 AM

Receiving the Shopping Center of the Year Award for the SM Mall of Asia from the Philippine Retailers’ Association are SCMC president Annie Garcia, SM’s AVP for Mall of Asia Complex Steven Tan, SM Prime Holdings Inc. president Hans Sy, and SM City Pampanga’s mall manager Roman Palo.
The SM Mall of Asia recently received the Philippine Retailers’ Association’s Shopping Center of the Year Award during its 2008 Outstanding Filipino Retailers and Shopping Centers of the Year Night held at the Crowne Plaza in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

This is the third time that an SM Supermall has been cited by the PRA since it launched the Shopping Center of the Year Award in 2002. SM City Baguio was cited in 2005, and SM Mall of Asia also won last year. Winning the award for the second time, SM Mall of Asia is already included in the Hall of Fame for consistently bagging the award.

Envisioned as the premier destination mall in the Pacific region, the SM Mall of Asia has raised the standards of shopping, leisure, and entertainment in the Philippines.

Located at the scenic Bay City development along Roxas Boulevard, it has a gross floor area of 400,000 square meters, making it the third largest mall in the world.

The complex consists of four buildings linked by elevated walkways – the Main Mall, the North Parking Building, the South Parking Building, and the Entertainment Center.

With over 600 shops and 150 restaurants, it is the ultimate shopping experience.

The Main Mall includes shops and restaurants, the Food Court, and the Country’s first Olympic-sized ice skating rink.

The South Parking Building houses the SM Department Store, while the North Parking Building includes the SM Hypermarket, two of its major anchors.

The Entertainment Center Building offers a spectacular view of Manila Bay from its trendy row of restaurants.

The country’s first IMAX Theater is another attraction in the Entertainment Center, as are its 10 cinemas, including Director’s Club for private viewing, and Centerstage for live performances.

Getting around the mall is easy. A tram takes customers around the perimeter of the mall, while the elderly and handicapped can use golf carts in the mall.

The SM Mall of Asia has 5,000 indoor parking slots, as well as outdoor parking facilities for customer convenience.

A transport terminal servicing destinations in Metro Manila and other areas in Luzon, as well as a taxi bay, make traveling very accessible.

Since it opened its doors to a record one million customers during opening day in May 2006, the mall – which SM Founder and Chairman Henry Sy, Sr. has called “the greatest project of my life” – has created a lot of excitement in the local shopping centers’ scene.

It has also grown to include a fully computerized Bowling Center, and more recently, a Science and Discovery Center that includes a planetarium and the world-class SMX Convention Center.

SMIC to build hotel, casino in ’09 (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/dec/15/yehey/business/20081215bus12.html)
Source: Manila Times (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/dec/15/yehey/business/20081215bus12.html)

THE SM group is set to build its hotel-casino and entertainment facilities for state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.’s (Pagcor) Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City next year.

Jose Sio, SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) chief finance officer, told reporters the holding firm will start construction of the hotels and casino within the Mall of Asia (MOA) complex adjacent to Pagcor’s project.

The 2-story casino, Sio said, is just a small portion of the company’s “total entertainment” offering as it would only have 10,000 square meters of floor space. He said it would be as big as the group’s supermarket in SM Megamall.

The executive said SMIC would form a new company under it to handle the entertainment venture. The gaming license and other necessary permits from Pagcor are expected to be released “soon,” he said.

Upon securing these, the holding firm will then select a third-party operator that will oversee the casino, similar to the arrangement it has with its future hotels in the area.

The holding company’s estimated $1-billion commitment to Pagcor is well under way, as it has been heavily investing in MOA, which will eventually be integrated into the Bagong Nayong Pilipino project. SMIC engaged hotel services provider Carlson Hotels Worldwide-Asia Pacific to manage Regent and Radisson branded hotels the Philippine company is building within the area.

Besides the high-end hotels, Sio said the SM group would put up SM-branded inns to cater to customers with a limited budget, local tourists and balikbayans.

In addition to the casino, SMIC will also build an arena that can host sporting events and concerts. A theme park may also be in the works, Sio said, to complete the company’s family friendly project.

To give room for all of its plans, the SM group will demolish its one-level headquarters in front of MOA and transfer its offices to the Two e-Com building under construction within the complex.

Earlier, Sio said the company would not slow down its expansion despite the economic downturn as it is set to open five new malls, additional retail stores and a Radisson in Cebu next year.

The executive said the group has enough funds for its expansion as it already secured $350 million or P17 billion from its bond issuance while it has another P27 million from the sale of its share in San Miguel Corp. SMIC also can tap existing and new credit lines, Sio said.

SMIC forms consortium for entertainment project (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/dec/16/yehey/business/20081216bus9.html)
Source: Manila Times (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/dec/16/yehey/business/20081216bus9.html)

THE SM group is forming a consortium that would develop the integrated entertainment hub under state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.’s (Pagcor) Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City along Manila Bay.

SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) told the Philippine Stock Exchange that it would tie up with units SM Land Inc., SM Development Corp., SM Commercial Properties Inc., SM Hotels Corp. and Premium Leisure and Amusement Inc. to undertake the said project.

The group has appointed Jose*fino Lucas, SMIC executive vice president and Jose Amantoy, the holding firm’s vice president, to sign the consortium agreement. They would also sign the provisional license “to signify SMIC’s acceptance of the terms and conditions thereof” and to execute and sign any amendments and other documentation implementing the terms of the said license.

On Monday, SMIC confirmed to the local bourse that it is spending about P10 billion to further develop its 60-hectare Mall of Asia (MOA) complex, which is adjacent to the Pagcor entertainment city project.

Next year, the group would start building its hotels and casino after securing the necessary license and permits from the government. This would be followed by the construction of an arena that can host sporting events and concerts. A theme park is also in the pipeline to complete the company’s family-friendly project.

SMIC committed $1 billion for the project, and recently engaged hotel services provider Carlson Hotels Worldwide-Asia Pacific to manage Regent and Radisson branded hotels. The conglomerate is building within the MOA area.

Besides the high-end hotels, the SM group would put up SM-branded inns to cater to customers with a limited budget, local tourists and balikbayan.

Early this year, Pagcor said various companies would bring in $8 billion to the Bagong Nayong Pilipino project. The biggest investors are the Genting Group of Malaysia and Aruze, the Japanese partner of casino mogul Steve Wynn, each of which would spend at least $3 billion.

Sy holding firm partners with units to develop gambling hub (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/139559/Sy-holding-firm-partners-with-units-to-develop-gambling-hub)
Source: GMAnews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/139559/Sy-holding-firm-partners-with-units-to-develop-gambling-hub)

MANILA, Philippines - Sy-led holding firm SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) will partner with its subsidiaries to develop a world-class entertainment hub in Pasay City.

In a disclosure, SMIC said it would form a consortium with its units to "jointly undertake the development of an integrated entertainment complex under the Phillippine Amusement Gaming Corp.’s (Pagcor) Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City project."

The holding firm will partner with newly incorporated Premium Leisure and Amusement, Inc., SM Commercial Properties, Inc., SM Land, Inc., SM Development Corp. and SM Hotels Corp.

The holding firm of the country’s richest man said it would pursue the transformation of the 60-hectare Mall of Asia Complex into a world-class business and entertainment hub in front of Manila Bay after securing a provisional license from Pagcor.

The plan is in line with the group’s thrust into tourism development as SM develops other projects like Hamilo in Batangas and a chain of high-end and boutique hotels, and convention centers nationwide, SM Vice-Chairman Henry Sy, Jr. said in a statement.

SMIC will proceed with the first phase of the project, estimated to cost around P10 billion, next year. The entertainment hub will have a number of hotels in front of Manila Bay to be operated by international hotel chain brand Radisson and Regent.

It will also include high-end retail establishments, a structure that will be operated by an international casino operator, and a theater for the performing arts, along with a residential component and a ferry terminal that will directly link the Mall of Asia Complex with SM’s Hamilo project.

SMIC was one of the three companies that were given a license by the government casino franchise firm to develop the Bagong Nayong Pilipino, along with Andrew Tan’s Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc. and Japan-based company Aruze.

Under the terms of reference for the Bagong Nayong Pilipino development issued last year by Pagcor, companies wishing to apply for licenses to run integrated casino entertainment complexes must submit proposals with a minimum project cost of $1 billion, consisting of both equity and debt.

The initial phase of the project involves about 40 hectares of reclaimed land along Manila Bay in Parañaque. Other locations in the vicinity may also qualify for Pagcor approval.

The government expects the project’s full implementation to triple Pagcor’s yearly income to $1.5 billion, which means higher National Government share in the profits. Applicants who want to own land must meet the constitutional cap of 40% foreign ownership. Companies that opt to lease Pagcor-owned land may be fully owned by foreigners.

In November, SM Commercial Properties, Inc. set up a unit called Premium Leisure and Amusement, Inc. to handle the development of real estate that will be leased to gambling firms. — Kristine Jane R. Liu, BusinessWorld

SM Mall of Asia named ’08 shopping center of the year
Companies
Thursday, 18 December 2008 00:04

THE SM Mall of Asia recently received the Philippine Retailer’s Association’s Shopping Center of the Year Award during the 2008 Outstanding Filipino Retailers and Shopping Centers of the Year Night held recently in Ortigas.

In a statement, SM said this is the third time that an SM Supermall has been cited by the PRA since it launched the award in 2002.

SM City Baguio was cited in 2005 and SM Mall of Asia also last year.

Envisioned as the premier destination mall in the Pacific Region, the SM Mall of Asia has raised the standards of shopping, leisure, and entertainment in the country. Located in the Bay City development on Roxas Boulevard in Metro Manila, it has a gross floor area of 400,000 square meters.

The complex consists of four buildings linked by elevated walkways with a total of 600 shops and 150 restaurants.

Since it opened its doors to a record one million customers during opening day in May 2006, the mall which SM Founder and chairman Henry Sy, Sr. has called “the greatest project of my life,” created a lot of excitement in the local shopping center scene.

SM — serving millions

By the Staff
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 04:50:00 12/17/2008

When the retail (and property and banking) group SM says it serves millions, it’s not kidding.

That’s why it deemed it appropriate to use “Serving Millions” as its theme to mark its 50th year of doing business.

Want to know how many pairs of shoes were sold by the SM Department Stores in 2007? More than 21 million. How many people came to SM malls during the same period? More than 900 million. How many meals were served in SM food courts and restaurants? Over 400 million. How many moviegoers relaxed and watched movies at SM Cinemas? More than 18 million.

SM also came up with some interesting figures for specific products.

Last year, 50 million kilos of chicken filled SM Supermarket customers’ shopping carts. More than a million umbrellas were sold by SM Department Stores and about 15 million Christmas lights and ornaments from SM brightened up Filipino homes over the holidays last year.

And one finding that gives the Sy family joy is the fact that 25 percent of its SM Foundation college scholars graduated with honors last year. Tina Arceo-Dumlao

SM Group keen on Belle Corp.’s Parañaque property
Honey Madrilejos-Reyes
BusinessMirror
05 January 2009

THE SM Group controlled by mall magnate Henry Sy has offered to acquire the 4.2-hectare prime lot in Parañaque City owned by developer Belle Corp.

A well-placed source at Belle told the BusinessMirror that the SM group has offered to buy the lot between P30,000 and P35,000 per square meter. But Belle is said to be “taking its time” and is still likely to entertain other offers.

“SM is interested in the property because it is adjacent to its developments within the Mall of Asia complex,” added the source.

The Sy company is an existing shareholder of Belle through property unit, SM Development Corp.

Belle earlier hinted plans of either selling the lot or forming a joint venture with other parties to build a high-rise residential condominium in the said property.

“I think that area where our property is located, is the next big thing. It complements the Entertainment City that Pagcor (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.) is planning to put up there,” said its vice chairman, Willie Ocier, in a previous interview.

Ocier added that the book value of the lot is estimated at P400 million. If the company opts to sell it, the property could fetch as much P2 billion given its prime location. “If we decide to sell the lot, we can use the proceeds for our other undertakings,” explained the Belle executive.

This year, Belle has allotted P2 billion for capital expenditure to support ongoing developments in its Tagaytay Highlands project. The company shifted its principal activity from mining and oil exploration to property development when it developed the Tagaytay Highlands Golf Club in 1989. The bulk of its developments are located in Tagaytay City and in Batangas.

Are you talking about the city of Bangkok and Hong Kong or just the mall?

If you want posh atmosphere go to other places, MOA is posh enough for me to some degree. But if you want to really see POSH Area, heaps of those around the metro. Beside I will bet that there will only be few pockets of areas in BKK and HK that will be considered posh, including Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington, London and other Great cities. What’s with the obsession about being posh? I just hope may pambili kayo that is why hinahanap nyo yung mga name na yon.

Granting that MOA will contain those high end names, do you have the capacity to buy their merchandise? I think MOA knows their target market and stick with their plan. It is all about market forces and not just for the sake of being truly Mall of Asia, what is the sense of having massive malls if the only people that can afford to shop there are handful or at least shop in one section of the Mall.

Just because they call themselves mall of Asia it doesn't necessary mean they should also contain the high end shops. In places that I've seen, those high end names have their own shops scattered in the city and not inside a mall.

Tone down man; it will not hurt you a bit.

And I’ve read somewhere that Japanese and Korean tourist spend only 20 -50 US Dollar a day in the Philippines. Come on if they want these high end merchandise don't you think they will get it from their respective countries. Most of the tourist are frugal themselves there are only handful that will buy high end merchandise. Besides, generalizing Koreans and Japanese as mahilig sa LV is wrong in so many ways.

My point, if the current prevailing market dictates upon the MOA management to target the middle class people as their base customer then they will do that and what’s wrong with that. 1 Peso of a middle class person is the same as 1 Peso of a Class A person by multitude it will be millions as well.

Competing to be one of the high end shopping destinations needs to be carefully plan; else it will end up being a big flop because the demand is lower than the supply. Don't you think those high end names will have a say as well about the viability putting shops in MOA.

I also noticed that while posh shops are inside malls like GB4 or PowerPlant mall among others, they are well-scattered in HK and they got their own huge shops! i actually like it that way.

SM BRAND is a success because its target market is where the Filipino population is concentrated at. but even the rich locals and tourists frequent these places. some foreign visitors would always want to spend few hundreds of $ in Landmark or SM. maybe it's because it's near the office. i didn't hear them mention about GB3/4. And don't forget, SM has its hi-end mall namely Podium.

I was a little surprised when one time, I was talking with an Indian affiliate at the roofdeck of Citibank Tower. He asked me where Greenhills is. Two more Kenyan clients went there by themselves with a handy map with them handed by the hotel receptionist. The wife of my former manager (Ukrainian) had with her a Lonely Planet book. The book brought her to Divisoria!!!

The point is...even those with money still prefer to shop in places where there's a bargain. Others even buy counterfeit DVDs here! (although i won't promote that) And while our balikbayans come home with couple of bailkbayan boxes in tow, tourists usually go home with luggageful of goodies. And by 'goodies', I mean not only clothes. I know someone who left Manila with some kilos of pancit!

As FlashCollider has previously stated, there are existing luxury brands available in the respective countries of our tourists. And Greenbelt 4 already houses them in the Philippines.

What I mean is that they built not just a mall, but a landmark. So everyone new here will be asking, "Where is the Mall of Asia?". My cousin from Canada did. And MoA has been getting the international exposure it wants to have because it is the world's 3rd largest next to SM North Edsa then China's Golden Resources Mall.

here is a news article pala..

Imelda theater palace now a tourist hub

REMEMBER the controversial Manila Film Center edifice built by former First Lady Imelda R. Marcos at the far end of Cultural Center of the Philippines complex along Roxas Boulevard?

Maybe the old folks have already forgotten it and the young generation, including the martial law babies among them, may not even know that it has ever existed.

To refresh our memory, even before the massive building was completed in 1982, in time for the holding of the Manila International Film Festival, Imelda’s film theater suffered misfortune. On Nov. 17, 1981, during the pouring of the cement, an upper floor of the building collapsed killing a number of workers some of whom were buried alive and their bodies never recovered.

For 12 years the building was not operational, the furnishings, floorings and the walls became dilapidated with tales that the place is the abode of spirits. Not minding the ghostly stories, a consortium of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino investors decided to rent it and make it the home of Amazing Philippine Theatre, producer of the 65-minute Amazing Philippine Show that showcases the best of Filipino gay talent in a variety stage presentation featuring Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Korean folk dances, song numbers, comedy acts, modern and traditional dances, among others.

With the most beautiful Filipino transvestites who really look like real women as performers, this type of show is very popular in Thailand with theaters such as Alcazar and Tiffany in Pattaya, Calypso and Mambo in Bangkok with the musical and dance presentation integrated into tourist packages. In America, they have similar show in Las Vegas, Moulin Rouge for France and Walker Hill show in Korea. This kind of show has attracted tourists from around the world.

"In Thailand, the show is spectacular because of the costumes and the lights. But the Manila version is definitely better. Our performers are skilled and talented. Those who’ve seen the show in Bangkok will surely agree that the Manila production is much better," Amazing Philippine Theatre chairman of the board Mr. Lee Jong Hyun says.

These shows from Bangkok and Pattaya, Thailand have inspired the founding investors of Amazing Philippine Theatre to put up the same type of show in the Philippines. Lee Jong Hyun believes in the talent and skill of Filipino artists in acting, dancing, stage production, lighting and costume design, and these are the reasons he put up this grand production in the Philippines.

The Amazing Philippine Show was formally launched last Dec. 10, 2001 after four months of preparation in reference to the production itself and the preparation and renovation of its home, the Manila Film Center.

The Amazing Philippine Show in Manila is just one of the projects of Amazing Philippine Theatre. Included in its future plan is to produce a similar show in Singapore, one of South East Asia’s premier tourists destinations.

Today, the company employs a total of 147 skilled Filipinos divided between various departments housed within the Manila Film Center. There is a Korean Restaurant "Kyong Bok Kung" that offers sumptuous meals at very affordable prices and a Tourist Souvenir Shop "Five Star" that sells souvenirs and gifts mostly made in the Philippines.

Over the past year of regular performance, the show has enticed more than 280,000 tourists most of whom were Koreans (80 percent), Chinese (10 percent), Japanese, and other nationalities including local tourists (10 percent).

But lately, the company is slowly moving into the local market since the local market can easily access the show and somehow would appreciate the show better since the performers are Filipinos. Around the world, it has been tested that Filipinos really excel both in the performing arts as well as in the designs. Having Filipino gay transvestite as performers is actually a big move. The company thinks that gay performers have an edge in proving their skills and talents. The company believes that gays would pull this show out, better than the average straight performers since they are actually a combination of both. Most of the performers here at the Amazing Philippine Show came from the ABS-CBN noontime show contest called "Queen of the World." Some came from other local and national gay beauty contests.

There are two performances at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., Tuesdays to Sundays. Tickets are available at the Manila Film Center box-office, direct agents and selected hotels. For reservation, please call 833-5758/833-5785.

I have no rebuttal to an argument born out of ignorance or limited knowledge of the subject matter.

Suit yourself, and when you have the capability to see the world, tell me first hand if you will try to spend most of your money to buy those high end merchandise or use it to experience the place. Tourists are the same no matter what the origin is. There will only be handful that can afford that stuff and have the luxury to actually buy them.

Be prudent it will not hurt you a bit. Tone down then and only then you will achieve PEACE.

1. Mall of Asia, gusto nya grand, to achieve that, he suggests mostly high end shops (ala-Greenbelt)..

2. Mall of Asia is owned by SM, basically targeting the Middle Class, so High-End shops? Nde yun shmpre bebenta, punta nalang sa Makati or Bonifacio Global City andun lahat yun..

basically, points are correct pero hindi pwede pagsabayin ang dalawa, pwede yan sa The Podium, kc pag ginawa yan sa mall of asia, pur mamahalin, hindi na yan pupuntahan ng ordinaryng pinoy...Puro foreigner nalang, at in the first place, yung karamihan ng foreigners ay nandito para maka mura...mura na maganda pa :D

I really really would like to see this built as described in the 3rd render... a park in between the 2 glass clad structure would definitely be something! the architecture would be more appreciated. it would also be logistically sound as the arena would stand right beside MoA's transport hub.

Metro Manila is actually in dire need of a coliseum. Araneta is admittedly very old and isn't as competitive as its SEA counterparts. If we had a new and modern ones, it would help the country in many ways :D ..even if they are just a few kilometers apart.

hmm.. he has a point in terms of design SM isn't as fanciful as Ayala. Though having said that SM appeals to a greater denomination and that is what MoA does. Should Bay City be strictly for the upper classes it'd be absolutely useless and most of us wouldn't and shouldn't be praising it since it fails to benefit most.

if it was up to me I'd demolish the existing Manila Film Center structure, establish a memorial to the supposedly buried alive near it, and build something different, something more decent that reflects the fact that it's on the edge of the water. The current design is almost snubbing Manila Bay.

To quote dubaicruiser, we need to maximise our usage of natural resources. However to maximise that we need financial resources, which is the great difference between the UAE and the Philippines.

SM Prime 2008 earnings rise to P6.4B (http://http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/business/02/20/09/sm-prime-2008-earnings-7-p64b)
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 02/20/2009 11:41 AM

Despite a tougher business environment, SM Prime Holdings Inc., the country's biggest mall developer, said its net income last year grew 7 percent with the entry of new malls and expansion of existing ones.

In a statement, SM Prime reported a net income of P6.4 billion for 2008 against P6 billion in 2007 on the back of a 12-percent rise in revenues to P17.8 billion.

The company said the results included the operations of the three SM malls in Xiamen and Jinjiang in southern China and Chengdu in central China.

"Notwithstanding the global financial situation, SM Prime achieved its goals and sustained its expansion in 2008. The company performed fairly well and was able to deliver on its targets and objectives due mainly to the unwavering support of its loyal customers, tenants, suppliers, shareholders, and employees," said SM Prime president Hans Sy.

In 2008, rental fees continued to account for the largest share of SM Prime’s consolidated revenues at P15.4 billion, up 15 percent year-on-year. Bulk of the increase came from additional space in new malls and mall expansions during the year.

SM Prime opened SM City Marikina, SM City Rosales and SM City Baliwag and expanded SM City North Edsa and SM Megamall.

Put together, the new malls and expansions in 2008 added 353,000 square meters to SM Prime's gross floor area. The average occupancy rate of the new malls now stands at 93 percent.

Meanwhile, cinema ticket sales during the year was flat due to the dearth of movie blockbusters.

SM Prime spent P8.2 billion in operating expenses for full year 2008, an increase of 15 percent from P7.1 billion in 2007. Income from operations posted a 9 percent growth from P8.8 billion in 2007 to P9.6 billion last year.

For 2009, SM Prime plans to open SM City Naga in Camarines Sur, SM City Rosario in Cavite, SM City Pamplona in Las Piñas, and the Sky Garden at SM City North Edsa. The company is also set to expand SM City Rosales in Pangasinan.

By the end of the year, SM Prime will have 36 malls nationwide and three malls in China, with an estimated gross floor area of 4.9 million square meters.

SM Prime is a unit of conglomerate SM Investments Corp., owned by one of the country's richest men, Henry Sy.
