kirby21 January 22nd, 2006, 05:06 PM ^^ the goods too as well as far as I can remember. Maybe I find it expensive since British pounds have more value than the dollar. I went to Paris too when I crossed the English channel through Dover and landed in the port of Calais.
I don't know why, Askal. When Americans come here for a visit in London, they always complain for high price, etc. Even my sis did. We usually ended up our day with them blabbering regarding prices and the like.
Paris is absolutely a nice city. And Eiffel is so romantic, too. Did you go for a river cruise along that river at night time? How about the Louvre? And the Moulin Rouge?
Askal82 January 22nd, 2006, 05:18 PM You mean the river Seine. Yeah. :)
kirby21 January 22nd, 2006, 05:25 PM I forgot the name of the river, Askal. Maybe it's really Siene. I've been to Paris several times na. It's my hangout place outside UK. I can never get enough of Paris for all I know. It's like everytime you go there, there's always something new. Maybe the place enchants me so good that it draws me big time. Wecky's hangout naman is in Rome, Italy. He can spend lots and lots of time or even months in Rome with his pals there.
Askal82 January 22nd, 2006, 05:32 PM I want to go to Rome. I heard its the best place to hang out in Europe.
fundraiser January 22nd, 2006, 07:33 PM This message was not even addressed to you Ilonggos. It was addressed to TJ who is very pessimistic. I just wanted to cheer him up a bit, suddenly a lot of the Ilonggos started pouncing on us Negrenses on our own thread. As I've said before, I do not have the actual stats because I have been out of the country for a while.
Me? Insecure? Look, who crossed over to another thread and started putting other people and cities down first? It's the Ilonggos who did it first because you people are rightfully afraid of neighboring cities taking the lead.
Sorry had to be very frank with you guys because of the way you people have been treating a Cebuano who was kind enough to point out the bad attitude some Ilonggo forumers had been exhibiting.
Ferrersky, Your apology is accepted. It'd be good if you post it here. It really is a good letter.
im sorry to butt-in but who is this cebuano youre talking about? i know this trouble is just between iloilo and bacolod so i was a bit surprised to know that a cebuano got involved? who is this cebuano dinho? or maybe you just had a typo error, maybe you meant a bacoleño not a cebuano. for cebuanos like me, that would be disturbing, so pls clarify things up.
daks2003 January 22nd, 2006, 09:53 PM DEAD ISSUE.
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 10:52 PM Kirby, you are in London, right? Are you and Weck best pals? Just curious...
Hello Ferrersky! Kirby is one of my barkada since college days pa. We knew each other too well. And yes, Kirbs is a great pal, indeed!
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:05 PM Medyo dugay na ako wala ka stroll dampi sa lawaan hehehe di bala dira sa may shell station near sa pag-ibig(ledesma village) may ara dira daw resto-bar man...i forgot the name...pero its good kay ur helping nga ma decentralize ang mga negosyo sa iloilo...wen i come back to iloilo this year basi pa man lang makalabay ta da sa resto-bar nyo :) goodluck sa inyo new business ...ang sa sambag nyo resto-bar man?
There's a new resto-bar man few meters away from us, Daks. Nalipat ako sang ngalan nila ... i think it's BOGS bala mo? I'm not so sure. I'll ask my sis when I call Iloilo again. I used to frequent Lawaan and Alta Tiera during college days coz a lot of my classmates were living there. I barely have any clue of what lawaan looks like right now except for big houses, etc.
And speaking of decentralization ... hehehe .. you're right to it. We're targeting areas or avenues within the Iloilo City suburbs. My family is again putting up another new business in the next six to eight months time. Again, ara siya within the metro area pero not specifically sa city proper. We are even looking at Passi City's area and Pototan. Depende kung ano ang mauna ah.
You're very much welcome daks to visit our resto-bar sa Lawaan Village. Ang sa Sambag naman iya is purely mini-grocery. I'm quite excited sa mga plans sang family regarding business/es, etc. I think we are giving full support na towards this endeavor. And hopefully, the plan comeback to business will be a success. I'll update you here from time to time.
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:09 PM lol. Sorry to wake you up, my friend. We're not too busy yesterday that's why I opted to register here. Anyway, thanks for a warm groggy welcome. Are you on duty?

wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:11 PM thanks for forwarding me few websites, too. I'm starting to visit each of them every day now. :)

wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:19 PM impressed then. lol. The boy has a good computer ability. I'm glad he's using it well.
Yes .. si Chymera pa? Kung pwede lang gani, matuon man ako advanced computer literacy ... hehehe .. well, it's not my speciality gid ina ... hahaha.
Lurkers? lol. The term wecky is too british for me. But you're right. Some are just making their lives miserable. Can't beat them though. Basta tayo, enjoy lang, amigo.
Yeah right ... enjoy gid ta iya Kirbs ... gakadlaw ko gani whilst reading some unwanted posts here ...hahaha ... they seem so aggressive yet very pointless ... hahaha ... sorry pero indi gid kapasar sa standard .. puro pa makabagbag damdamin ... hahaha ... ay nano man?
Anyway, when will be your days off? Come to my flat and we'll cook naman and have some good chat. weck, I might not be joining you in your European tour this year as you know, I'm bound to see my relatives in the US by September so I have to save money muna. They say shopping in America is cheap. Who knows? lol. I'm trying to get in touch with our classmates in california area para libre naman ang iban lakwatsa ko. :)
love to, Kirbs ... ano luto mo da?
I have some email adds of our batchmates in California ... I'll check it in my friendster and yahoo and I'll forward it to you .. damo to sila subong ... did I not mention it to you that they are planning a reunion in LA this year? Pag indi ako madayon sa Eurotour, sabay ta pakadto sa California. Wow .. the idea made me excited ah ... hmmmm...
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:23 PM yes weck. I've actually checked The News Today Info last night and started reading some news from archives. Good news presentation, huh? I'm starting to enjoy it, mate.
the best news site for Ilonggos, Kirby ... ang presentation mas maayo and mas may basahon ka nga balita ... you know that with all the political news haunting our country, this News Today is the best alternative and tourist-friendly of all.
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:28 PM Lie-low daw. Sign of old age? You've just turned 30. It's not old age yet.lol.
Weck, that schooling will get you old faster. Ask your boss to give it someone else's na. Actually, I'm going to take another course this September. So, if I can, I'll try to go to the US for a vacation before the course starts. Btw, what kind of course naman ang ino-offer sa iyo this Feb? It's non-stop eh.
Sshhh. Don't tell anybody. lol. I did use the ward's computer. Siyempre hindi naman busy so it's time to sit and relax a bit. Ikaw rin, di ba? lol.
hahaha ... Kirby you are giving my details away ... it's bad man ... hehehe.
I've spoken to my boss yesterday via phone and she won't allow me to quit schooling ... hay ... last course na lang daw kuno ... hopefully, my management course this September for a year na naman will be shelved na lang for the meantime. We'll see.
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:34 PM Cool, you guys both Londoners?!?! I didn't know many illonggos are in London.
There's too many Ilonggos here in London and UK, Askal. From our school alone, we're almost a thousand na ... and how many schools of nursing in Iloilo City? SIX. That number gave us already a good population here in UK excluding the wives/husbands and children of Ilonggo nurses who came here with them.
wecky January 22nd, 2006, 11:37 PM Oh! I hope you can make it all this Dinagyang celebration.
BTW, I am promoting my first ever thread, Filipino Mentality: What Can You Say? (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=308931) This is specially made for people like our very pessimistic-of-Iloilo visitas. I hope you can contribute to this thread...

wecky January 23rd, 2006, 12:14 AM Treñas asks Malacañang help for bridge project
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY
ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas, through the Sangguniang Panlungsod, applied to be a recipient of the President’s Bridge Program.
He wants the bridge linking Brgys. Sta. Rosa and Dungon A rehabilitated to pave way for an access road from Housing to the Diversion Road in Mandurriao District.
The existing bridge in the area is only made of wood.
An established bridge in the area, Treñas said, will be useful for commuters and private vehicles from Mandurriao Plaza, ALEOSAN area and Oton going to Central Iloilo.
The realization of the project would ease traffic at the Diversion Road, particularly in going to Mandurriao Plaza, Treñas added.
The Office of the President took cognizance of the request. Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Waldo Flores sent a letter to the City Council.

Weina January 23rd, 2006, 05:29 AM Bayluhay: San Joaquin's Cultural Treasures
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/20/baylohay1.jpg
By Bombette G. Marin
bayluhayThe history of San Joaquin revolves around the mixing of numerous cultural, ethnic, and political influences. These include contributions from several major indigenous civilizations, Aeta influences, and significantly of Malay and Spanish heritage. Although researchers do not know exactly when Datu Puti and his men (facing the prospect of prolonged and intense conflict with the oppressive ruler of Borneo) fled and landed in the shores of Siwaragan, a negotiation known as the Barter of Panay between Makatunaw (one of the 10 Datus) and Marikudo (ruler of the Negritos) took place at Imbidayan, along the beach of barrio Sinogbuhan. From Suiga to Suaga, Suagan to Suarangan, the municipality finally adopted the name San Joaquin in 1801, renaming it in honor of their patron.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/20/baylohay2.jpg
bayluhayA third class municipality, the town was developed as a separate town in December 10, 1910. Its 23,135 hectare land area, overshadowed by a chain of mountain ranges, stretches along the southern portion of the province. Its borders are defined by the Municipality of Sibalom, Province of Antique on the north, Panay Gulf on the south, the Municipality of Miag-ao, Province of Iloilo on the east and the Municipalities of Tobias Fornier, Hamtic and Anini-y, Province of Antique on the west.
One of the oldest towns in the province, located southeast and 53 kilometers away from Iloilo City, San Joaquin is divided into 85 barangays populated by 47,826 (2000 Census on Population) residents.
Tourism has become one of the major income earners and employers of local workers in the municipality. San Joaquin attracts tourists, mostly locals from the city and nearby provinces. It has a leading industry of the town, with an attractive and varied landscape, a rich set of cultural resources, the municipality's attractions are many, from its colorful neighborhoods, famous cuisines to its prestigious cultural activity.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/20/baylohay3.jpg
bayluhayThe most popular and the most visited tourist destination in San Joaquin is its renowned San Joaquin Church. Numerous churches around Iloilo constructed during the colonial era reflect the blending of Spanish architectural designs. The church is the only one in the Philippines sporting a bass relief depicting the historic battle between the Christians of Spain and the Moors of Morocco in Tetuan in 1859.
The San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery built from coral rocks in 1892, with a 20-step staircase flanked by stone balustrades with crowning glory, the hexagonal chapel known as "Camposanto", is another must-see attraction.
In Panay, a variety of factors are used to identify an individual as indigenous in Iloilo, including customs, language, dress and even food. San Joaquin culture is a fascinating blend of Aeta traditions and Malay and Spanish colonial influences. Long before the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century, the indigenous people of the town had developed arts such as music and dances.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/20/baylohay4.jpg
bayluhaySeen through the lens of time, the Aeta inheritance has the more cultural glow, and the Malay retain a sentimental attachment to it. The Barter of Panay became the point of origin of San Joaquin's history and its first common culture and laid down the first lasting foundations of any significance. Without its past, Ilonggos and San Joaquin's culture would almost certainly have developed differently. Though San Joaquin has enjoyed a clear sense of its own identity in the modern period, these influences were given a tremendous boost through a cultural presentation that truly reflects the community's celebration of life's bountiful blessings. A festivity showing how grateful and proud the people of San Joaquin are with their history.
The BAYLUHAY Festival celebrated every third week of January, reflects the town's unique mixture of races and cultures. Historical and religious themes, mostly anchored from the Barter of Panay, such as efforts with the preservation of rituals are reflected mostly through their dances. Since that time, the Malays and Aetas have assimilated most important cultural trends as seen through the different rituals that are still being observed in some of the town's barangays. These rituals are authenticated by the maarams or "medicine men or healers" in the area. Common is the rites of passage that evolved from the war dance or dinapay was performed during the Malay-Aeta exchange, to ward off evil and protect them from harm.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/20/baylohay5.jpg
bayluhayIn celebration of its 96th Municipal Fiesta with the theme "Cultural Revival for National Identity and Global Competitiveness," the Municipality of San Joaquin headed by their very supportive and dynamic Municipal Mayor, Hon. NINFA S. GARIN in cooperation with its Municipal Tourism Office headed by Mrs. Erlyn Alunan, is inviting everyone to witness their weeklong celebration of BAYLUHAY Festival on January 16-21, 2005. The gem of the festivity is the cultural presentation of the reenactment of the greatest real estate deal in history, the Barter of Panay on January 20, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at the San Joaquin Sports Stadium. Other events include the Dayang Kang Bayluhay at 1:30 p.m. and the world renowned, Pasungay at 9 a.m., both scheduled on January 21, 2005.
For many tourists to this quiet town, the obligatory souvenir is the experience one can get---rich in history, resplendent with natural wonders, the uniqueness of their culture and the wonder that is San Joaquin.
i post something about san joaquin also last week pero nagtalang sa pihak sa "Iloilo Province, Aklan, Antique & Capiz thread" he he he natuyo na abi ako that time sang pag post mo :tongue3:
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 05:43 AM Hello to all my fellow Ilonggos. I'm kirby and I'm new here in Skyscrapercity. I'm working in London, UK as well. My friend introduced me in this forum and I'm glad to be here na. Maayong adlaw sa inyo tanan.
Hi Kirby! Welcome on board sa Iloilo thread. hope to see you around here always. Happy posting & maayong adlaw or gab i man dira sa imo! :)
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 06:46 AM Weina, I love reading your conversations with wecky. He's right though. He's a party animal gid. He never stays in his flat at all. Puro lakwatsa and shopping iyan. Well, not all the time naman kasi busy iyan palagi sa study niya. Wala nang katapusang schooling. As far as I know, since 2001, nasa school na iyan until now. lol. I have even witnessed him na nilalagare ang dalawang universities sa iisang semester. Naka-ilang course na yata ang buang.
So Weina, are you in Taiwan or Hongkong? I always wish to visit Hongkong. Well, before pa kung tutuusin. Nung nasa Pinas pa ako dati may plan na kaya lang kulang ang budget, ngayon naman, walang time. You know naman, that whenever we go home, most of our times will be spent with our family. One month stay in Iloilo is not enough. Siguro, ikaw rin, di ba? Sana someday kung papalarin.
Anyway guys, see you all naman sa liwat. I'll try to give wecky a call later that I'm in na. See yah !
yup Wecky and I are having fun in this forum, i don't know if you read the previous thread, we're doing a sort of letter writing there before, gee funny but i enjoy it too! I never write letters but 'im doing it right here although indi na masyado subong he he he...wecky and I is the exact opposite, he's a party & shopping man but am not. i don't like crowds that much...i get easily sick with it. hmmmm study...school... well it's really nice. andi'm more on for it. if given a chance also i'll be studying for the rest of my life he he he...and i like friends in school too! usually they're really the good & true ones.
btw, i am in china right now but i usually go back to Taiwan for vacation. I do visit hongkong also but seldom though. hongkong is a nice small place quite expensive though compared to taiwan & china especially when it comes to foods, hotels & accomodations. when i see hongkong it's just like seeing miracles. a very small place but highly urbanized & developed. it's a common site to see high rise buildings, skyscrapers in the hills. the way they make use of their space there in hongkong is just so magnificent...everything is also efficient there so first time travellers wouldn't find it really hard to tour around in hongkong.
and yes it';s true, 1 month stay in pinas is not enough for me and how much more to you guys there situated in a farther continent. 3 or 4 months i think is the best he he he...lots of time to eat good food & be with our families and of course tour around the philippines. mind you there are lots of beautiful places there in pinas that i haven't visited yet. and i think it's a pity and a shame if i can visit other countries but have'nt explored my own country yet.
anyway, see you around here next time.
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 07:04 AM impressed is the word, amigo ... abi na nila karon kung ano ang ginapang-post di ni Chymera nga pics di ... hahaha ... and yes, Chymera's blog is really good. Well updated pa na and way better compare sa official website sang Iloilo.[/B]
it's a pity i can't see chymera's blog but will try it when i'm in taiwan this week.
hopefully you'll enjoy here, too ... well, I do. Visitors, lurkers? Damo na di ... intiendiha na lang ang iban ... hahaha. Karon aton pa di pangabuhi sa London mangin miserable.
tama guid weck, mind you this SSC is my official hangout, and like you i'm enjoying here too! i'm a lurker too sometimes he he he. and yes let's not make our lives miserable by minding what others blah blah blahs there. let's have a possitive attitude here always, :cheers1:
rustyboi January 23rd, 2006, 07:13 AM any Dinagyang photos? what's up? :)

The Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) office in Bonifacio Drive, Iloilo City
Reforms ongoing at MIWD
By Maricar M. Calubiran
Iloilo -- Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) Interim General Manager Edwin Reyes said he is instituting reforms at the water district in order to serve better its growing consumers in the city and at the same time address its backlog.
Reyes said they are contemplating to implement a new scheme on the connection process in order for the applicants to avail of affordable and clean potable water. He said they are also studying of lowering the rates of water connection fees to P2,000. The rest of the connection fees will also be made in staggered basis.
Reyes assumed as the MIWD's interim general manager October last year as per the approval of the Local Waterworks Utilities Administration (LWUA) which is headed by Ilonggo businessman Larry Jamora.
Lee Jayme Jalbuena still sits as the general manager.
Based on the available records at the MIWD, the local water district was only able to install 22,000 water connections to the 114,000 registered households in the city. The figure covers three years.
It is only 5.18 percent of the total households or there are only more or less 1,000 connections made every year to residents who want to avail of clean and potable water.
Reyes said he is eyeing to install 7,500 water connections every year to decrease the backlog. He said they wanted to cut short the connection process in three to four days period."Just give us ample time," Reyes said.
The water district lack materials to meet the needs in installing water connections. Reyes, however said they have new service contracts for new water works system. Last year, MIWD started its rehabilitation program after they availed of some P207 million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The project covers the replacement of old water pipes to new ones from the different water sources. The old pipe lines were installed 50 years ago from the towns of Pavia, Sta. Barbara, Cabatuan and Maasin. They are also set to drill eight additional wells to improve the city's water supply.
Meanwhile, LWUA Administrator Jamora urged the people to report to his office the water district's personnel who are asking higher connection charge for easy and immediate installation of water connections in their homes.
He said corruption inside the water district should be eliminated as he stressed the importance of having a clean potable water in every household. He said the contamination level of water coming out from faucets is not critical.
Jamora explained that the water coming out from the water district is clean. It is much cleaner than those water coming out from refill stations. He said one would not know the sanitation practice in every water refill station.
He lamented that there are barangay officials from the different municipalities who dig holes from the water pipe lines to avail of free water. This allows some bacteria to gain entry in the different water pipe lines.
The LWUA administrator said they have already asked the assistance of the local government units to prevent illegal water connections in their respective area."What is P20 to P30 gain compared to the hazards and dangers it will bring to the children, we have our social responsibility," Jamora said.
(from The News Today Info online)
good thing they're doing something about this issue. i've been paying my bills there without any decent drop of water coming out from the pipes.
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 07:53 AM I already PM'ed eazyboy that if he does not like what is being posted here, then he don't visit this thread. Maybe it's high time we recommend banning him in the forum, at least on this thread.
you don't need to pm or mind this kind of people, it's just a waste of your effort and time also. i've already recommended before here in this thread to ban these persons but seems to me the moderator don't want to take any actions, i thought they will but sadly they did nothing also. I don't know why. you see people like this really do exist and we have to accept the truth that our thread is not spared from this kind of pest. They are just a bore, with nothing to do but make everybody's live's around them miserable like their lives too. so we should not be trapped on this. they are just conspiring anyway to destroy and tarnish this thread. I hope they would be man enough (if they are) and come out in the open. Stop hiding with your camouflage there. There are some stupid people here hiding in their username that think that in the guise of computer can behave like idiots so let them be. they're happy i think doing this so let's just understand them. We pinoy in the first place should work united in promoting our cities & country by posting positive issue here in this thread and despised those who are just doing the reverse and pretending to be pinoy.
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 08:03 AM pero kapwa tao.
actually, I don't think its the fight between the cities anymore. He's taking it too personally by attacking the forumers who simply wanted to post things about the province and the city and he can't even do that $4it on his forum. Look at who are posting mostly in theirs?
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 08:15 AM Don't be a dumbass! My purpose on this Philippine forum is mostly concentrated on posting old photos and structures of the Philippines. :gunz:
sorry nadamay ka rin Animo. don't mind these kind of creatures. Just post here all your discoveries of Iloilo. We Ilonggos and those others who love Iloilo would really appreciate it and would be really grateful for that. It's one way we can understand and appreciate our beloved place by knowing it's past, present and future... Hope more pictures and articles, new or old, will be coming from you. btw, why can't I see the pictures you post there in page 17 i think.
daks2003 January 23rd, 2006, 08:27 AM I almost forgot that I once visited Taiwan when I was still in college hehehe I will never forget the "shabu-shabu"(or what is it called in taiwan) in the food courts in the malls in taiwan...ano sekreto sina da weins man? ang timpla ara na sa karne no? also i will never forget that taiwanese girl who I saved from getting hit by a speeding scooter hehehe I was crossing the street with my parents and I saw this girl crossing like she was "blank" and a speeding scooter was coming on her way...ti ginhawidan ko sya eh...i told her " you almost got hit by that bike!!" tulok ya lang ko kag naglakat dayon hahahaha i dunno if she understood me or just puzzled and thinking "what the heck are you talking about boy!" hehehehe taiwan is one interesting place...the national palace museum was the most interesting part and i think thats one of the reasons why china want taiwan badly hehehe
yup Wecky and I are having fun in this forum, i don't know if you read the previous thread, we're doing a sort of letter writing there before, gee funny but i enjoy it too!
3 or 4 months i think is the best he he he...lots of time to eat good food & be with our families and of course tour around the philippines. mind you there are lots of beautiful places there in pinas that i haven't visited yet. and i think it's a pity and a shame if i can visit other countries but have'nt explored my own country yet.
anyway, see you around here next time.
daks2003 January 23rd, 2006, 08:40 AM btw, pila ka floors gani ang TTK tower kag ang Sky City Tower ah?
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 09:24 AM I almost forgot that I once visited Taiwan when I was still in college hehehe I will never forget the "shabu-shabu"(or what is it called in taiwan) in the food courts in the malls in taiwan...ano sekreto sina da weins man? ang timpla ara na sa karne no? also i will never forget that taiwanese girl who I saved from getting hit by a speeding scooter hehehe I was crossing the street with my parents and I saw this girl crossing like she was "blank" and a speeding scooter was coming on her way...ti ginhawidan ko sya eh...i told her " you almost got hit by that bike!!" tulok ya lang ko kag naglakat dayon hahahaha i dunno if she understood me or just puzzled and thinking "what the heck are you talking about boy!" hehehehe taiwan is one interesting place...the national palace museum was the most interesting part and i think thats one of the reasons why china want taiwan badly hehehe
nice daks you've been to taiwan also. shabu shabu or as we call it huo gwo (huo=fire, guo=pot). i like this much. this is a very common food in every chinese households especially every winter. the secret is not really on the meat Daks, wala na ya ginatimpla ang karne, it's in the sauce and the soup and mas madamo ilakot mo nga veggies, seafoods or meat mas namit sya. The meat is prepared fresh to make it taste better. I am eating this all the time even at home. i prepare it simplier though. the huo guo here in china is also ok but i like more the taiwan huo guo. mas namit sya ya.
so you have experienced also given a shocked look only instead of thanking you by a bystander you just helped he he he. i had experienced this before also. i don't know but usually for us pinoys it would be easy to utter a simple 'thank you' even there's this language barrier thing but for them it's not. i don't really understand why. i just always get only a look in return. but this was long before when i can't utter a single chinese word. now it's different, i can at least hear a simple shie shie (thank you) from them. and yes taiwan is really an interesting place daks especially now that there are lots of developments going on in there. and not only because of this museum daks that china wants to get taiwan by hook or by crook, taiwan is darn rich, all those hi tech companies are there in taiwan, who wouldn't in his darn good mind would not be interested, indi na ko maghambal ah basi karon i ban ang ssc just because of this...he he he...you know naman kon ano ginahimo nila diri, grabe ang politika diri kag basi indi na ko kabalik diri he he he. pero indi guid ko ya pabor nga kuhaon nila ang taiwan. about the motorcycles gale, ah grabe didto ya, high number of road accidents are usually caused by these motorcycles. grabe daw mga subay lang abi sila didto kadamo guid ya kag paspas man lusot lusot lang ang iban so syempre tama guid ka delikado. amo na nga bisan ano ka convenient indi guid ko ya mag drive motorcycle ma car lang ko ya ah kay nahadlok ko ya sa ila he he he.
kirby21 January 23rd, 2006, 09:53 AM Hi Kirby! Welcome on board sa Iloilo thread. hope to see you around here always. Happy posting & maayong adlaw or gab i man dira sa imo! :)
Hi Weina. thanks for a welcome. I think I'll enjoy hanging out here in Skyscrapercity, too. Hope to see more nice people around. Cheers ! :)
kirby21 January 23rd, 2006, 09:57 AM I want to go to Rome. I heard its the best place to hang out in Europe.
Askal, Rome is magnifico. I went there with Wecky 2 years ago. We stayed with his priest's friends for 2 weeks. And I did enjoy a lot as well. His friends became our tour guide in every corner of Roma. I think my head was too heavy for infos after a good two weeks vacation in Roma. We even went to see the vatican garden at the back of San Pietro Basilica. 'twas really great experience.
If you to ask about Rome or Italy, PM Wecky. He's knows the place too well.
Weina January 23rd, 2006, 10:01 AM Hi Weina. thanks for a welcome. I think I'll enjoy hanging out here in Skyscrapercity, too. Hope to see more nice people around. Cheers ! :)

ferrersky January 23rd, 2006, 01:28 PM Wow! That's a very huge pic! Thanks, Dinho. The Visayan Cities (Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Tagbilaran and Puerto Princessa) are agressive when it comes to economic and infrastructural development. May this serve as an inspiration to all Filipinos.
ferrersky January 23rd, 2006, 01:31 PM BTW, Dinho, do you know where this will be built? Ty.
death327 January 23rd, 2006, 01:58 PM Ako man... would you know where this bldg will be built? Could you please map this out? The old Rehab area is not that big that it will fit this huge infra.
Thanks
Dinho January 23rd, 2006, 02:07 PM BTW, Dinho, do you know where this will be built? Ty.
The complex was proposed to be built at the Iloilo Business Park. The site is located next to Iloilo Business Hotel. If the Iloilo Business Hotel is owned by my former UPV professor, that would already be the outcome of the proposal. I don't think the owner could ever afford to build this proposed complex.
The governments proposal to build a 3000 seat convention center near the provincial Capitol is good but their proposed location is not good as it is the only open space left in Downtown Iloilo. They really should locate it at the Business Park as I proposed as the area still needs something to encourage more construction.
Kaiser January 23rd, 2006, 02:52 PM wow! Iloilo is really beautiful. I really like those old houses & churches:colgate:
are there more highrises to be build in Iloilo besides the Iloilo corporate tower?
kirby21 January 23rd, 2006, 03:17 PM Here's the Snapshots of the Opening Salvo last Friday. Believe me, the pics looks really great and it's just an opening salvo pa lang. The Dinagyang Festival is set on January 28 and 29, 2006. All pics were taken from The News Today online. And here they are:

Which part of China you're from, Weina? Shanghai? China really amazed me during this last decade. Their economy is really doing well. An awaken sleeping giant/dragon for sure. China-made materials proliferates European market. And I think it's all over the world, too.
Talking with Wecky is always a non-stop thingy. You can talk everything with him under the sun. He's got a lot of things to share. He's favourite subject? Business and Philiosophy. He loves motivational books and biographies of tycoons. I wonder why he's into nursing, too. lol. I have taken few courses from university here as well but not as extensive as he have. What I really like into schooling here in England is that, I'm off the ward for work and I've been paid to study and listen to all the lectures. I just hate deadlines and assignments, that's all. :)
kirby21 January 23rd, 2006, 03:44 PM that's good ... we can share lots of updates together soon ... constant monitoring gid amigo .. good basis for our business plans in the future ... hehehe.
I've started already. I'd beat you up in posting photos of Dinagyang's Opening Salvo from The News Today online paper already. :)

where did you get the render, I'm not familiar with any of the surrounding structures or the roundabout in the pic ... the Iloilo river isn't even visible
edit; ahh okay, it was a plan proposed for the ICC, I guess it won't materialize just like what happened to the ICC ... The new convention center (funded by the provincial LGU)will be a 6-level building, located at the present site of the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center just beside the provincial capitol. I'm sure that the project will push through though

are there more highrises to be build in Iloilo besides the Iloilo corporate tower?
I don't think Iloilo is suitable for highrises at this time. I prefer Iloilo city to build this kind of architechture to highlight its cultural significance in the Philippines. I hope they develop Iloilo city differently from the usual cities who like having high rises, glass, steel and modern architechture.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-9/1071951/GrandDameHotel.jpg
This building provided an excellent example of how Iloilo's development should take place.
wecky January 23rd, 2006, 11:12 PM it's a pity i can't see chymera's blog but will try it when i'm in taiwan this week.
when you goes home .. lantawa na lang liwat sa net ... hehehe. hay Wein ... seems like I'm aching to be home as well ... just for few weeks lang ... hehehe.
tama guid weck, mind you this SSC is my official hangout, and like you i'm enjoying here too! i'm a lurker too sometimes he he he. and yes let's not make our lives miserable by minding what others blah blah blahs there. let's have a possitive attitude here always, :cheers1:
hehehe ... somebody to ruin my life because of SSC? ... hahaha ... he's a big joke ... hehehe ... i can't be bothered at all. I hang out here because of few people I like and not for those I don't even know in miniscule (and probably with no intention to know at all). And yes, just be positive .. life is so short to be wasted ... enjoy whilst you can.
namit guid ya sa pinas ang pagkaon so hataw hasta nga maghalabok ka no, ako diri ya ganiwang na daw tul an na lang subong kay wala na ko ga kaon diri natak an na ko pagkaon nila, hay....dugangan pa nga indi man ko bi kabalo magluto te wala guid sang makaon eh, he he he...hulat na lang ko ya puli sa pinas kag magpatambok he he he
basta sa Pinas when, you'll go big ... too much food to eat ... and you spend less ... whenever I goes home, pagbalik diri sa UK, bloated ako ... hahaha. And like you, I don't know how to cook as well ... thanks to microwave and rice cooker ... hehehe ... life without them will be miserable ... hahaha.
wecky January 23rd, 2006, 11:17 PM good thing they're doing something about this issue. i've been paying my bills there without any decent drop of water coming out from the pipes.
agree gid Wein ... hopefully, MIWD will be useful for us Ilonggos naman .. their service is poor ...... dapat i-reklamo pirmi ... ipa-Bombo ta Wein ... hahaha ... we always had a go with our community security guards in Savannah because of poor water supply ... hehehe ...
wecky January 23rd, 2006, 11:25 PM btw, pila ka floors gani ang TTK tower kag ang Sky City Tower ah?
Daks, The SkyCity Tower (of Bombo Radyo) is a 10-storey building like the Medicus .. ang TTK tower naman is around 8-storey like the Iloilo Business Hotel

Oscar Arenas, Hermano Mayor of Dinagyang 2006, carries the Sto. Niño de Cebu upon arrival at the Iloilo Airport. The holy image was brought by Fr. Roy Margallo, OSA, (right) from Cebu to reenact the first coming of the image aimed at strengthening the devotion to the Sto. Nino which is the root of the Dinagyang. To Arenas' right is his wife Rose, the Hemana Mayor.
wecky January 23rd, 2006, 11:54 PM Wecky, you should treat me for a dinner, man! You haven't told me na may live band pa pala. Shall we go for a mini-celebration, mate? You owe me one for this.
Anyway, thank you Chymera for telling me. I'll sure ring him in his area later on pag medyo hindi na busy. :)
Kirbs, I feel much better now ... actually more ecstatic, mate ... hahaha ... the Research Development Authority and the Local Ethics committee approved my research proposal na ... hahaha ... when I received the confirmation letter this pm, I just wanted to go home and celebrate ... at least I can carry on with my research and everything ... and with this approval, the hospital booked my flights already for Wales and Scotland to attend the national conventions ... hehehe .. i'll be off the ward for another week na naman.
anyway, I'll call you later na lang ... hehehe.
wecky January 23rd, 2006, 11:57 PM Dumangas to launch mobile pre-school program
By Ruby P. Silubrico
THE town of Dumangas Iloilo will launch its first mobile pre-school program on Wednesday.
The program aims to educate out-of-school youths and train parents on livelihood programs.
Mayor Rolando "Rolly" Distura initiated the program with the help of their Municipal Council members and the Department of Education (DepEd).
Distura said this project is a mobile school that offers learning to accelerate bystanders and give livelihood training for the parents without jobs. Basic carpentry and electricity will also be taught to the parents.
It is also an alternative learning system, non-formal education, mobile library, livelihood and health education, moral values and acceleration program.
A mobile truck van with acronym "Rolly" which means Reading Opportunity for Learning and Livelihood for the Youth and Community will go to all barangays in Dumangas. The truck van serves as a library with computer and television that students and parents can use.
Aside of some personnel who will man or serve as teachers, there will be a team that will assess which barangay needs the services most.
"Our mobile school van will probably stay for two weeks in a barangay before transferring to the next. I initiated this program to help the youths who want to go to school but who having financial difficulties as well as provide livelihood to parents," Distura said.
"After attending classes, we will give each of them a certificate of acceleration. This is a sort of innovation. Our main concern here is health, education and environmental sanitation," Distura added.
Distura said it took five years before the program came into being. He conceptualized the project in 2000.
"I created this project after learning that there are youths who have problems with their studies," he said.
Director Carolina Guerrero of the Central Bureau of Alternative Learning System, Iloilo Governor Niel D. Tupas and other local government officials are expected to attend the launching that will start at 9 a.m. in Dumangas gymnasium.

What I really like into schooling here in England is that, I'm off the ward for work and I've been paid to study and listen to all the lectures. I just hate deadlines and assignments, that's all. :)

wecky January 24th, 2006, 12:28 AM The beat is on for Iloilo City's Dinagyang Festival
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/dinagyang2006/openingsalvo1.jpg
The thunderous and addicting beat of drums already filled the air in this city as participating tribes in the Kasadyahan and Ati Tribe competitions paraded, danced and showed a bit of their choreography in the five judging areas situated in the city's major thoroughfares Friday during the Opening Salvo of the 2006 Dinagyang Festival, the most awaited event of the Ilonggos.
During the past years the Dinagyang Opening Salvos were held in the afternoon thus, rerouting of the city's traffic was only implemented at the start of the parade participated in by the tribes joining the Ati tribe competition. This time, commuters experienced the traffic rerouting as early as 9:00 in the morning after the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival Executive Committee decided to hold the event the whole day giving the morning for the Kasadyahan tribes while the afternoon for the Ati tribes.
Dinagyang Executive Committee Publicity and Media Relations Group Head Nena Magalona said the Opening Salvo also serves as tribes' familiarization of the extended parade routes and the performance areas which were relocated to accommodate more spectators and visitors.
Every year, domestic and foreign tourists and visitors fill the streets of the city of Iloilo to witness these two main spectacles of the festival in honor of Sto. Nino. The Kasadyahan and Ati tribe competitions are slated on January 28 and 29, respectively.
This year, 7 tribes will compete in the Kasadyahan contest participated in by tribes not only from schools in Iloilo City but also from the local government units of neighboring towns and provinces. The tribes are as follows: Tribu Mandurriaonon of Mandurriao National High School, Iloilo City; Tribu Paghidaet of Lapaz National High School, Iloilo City; Tribu Tultugan and Tribu Manoggama of the municipality of Maasin; Tribu Camando of Leon; Tribu Bana-ag of Anilao; and Tribu Kamunuan of the province of Antique.
On the other hand, excitement and fascination are building up in the Dinagyang Ati competition as 20 tribes from the merged open and barangay categories strengthened and enhanced their artistic and creative skills in choreography to showcase more impressive and colorful presentations in this year's competition.
Starting this year, the Executive Committee designated street dancing areas to provide viewers who cannot be accommodated in the judging areas, a good glimpse of the tribes performances. The tribe who shall be rated in their street dancing skills will perform in the following areas: Aldeguer for YMCA route, Philippine National Bank for Valeria route, Payless Plaza for Quezon route, Mabini for Ledesma route, de Leon for Iznart route and the University of Iloilo for the Ortiz route.
This 2006, the following cash prizes await the winners in both competitions: P100,000 for the champions; P50,000 for the 1st runner-up; P40,000 for the 2nd runner-up;P30,000 for the 3rd runner-up; and P20,000 for the 4th runner-up. Also, cash prizes will be given to the Best in Performance —P10,000; Best in Choreography — P10,000; Best in Music — P10,000; and Best in Costume — P10,000. In the Kasadyahan contest, tribe with the Best Float will receive P1 0,000 and Best Choreographer — P5,000 while in the Ati contest declared Best in Costume will go home with P5,000, Best Headdress — P5,000, Best Discipline — P5,000 and Best Choreographer — P5,000. Top winners will also receive trophies and certificates.
Other relevant activities to add color and vitality to the festivity are the Dinagyang Exhibits, Trade exhibit, Ms. Dinagyang Pageant, Food Festival, Fluvial Procession and Foot Parade among others. (PIA)

ellnykz January 24th, 2006, 07:11 AM Iloilo city, like any other major cities in the Philippines such as Manila and Cebu, has a higher than average amount of tourists as Iloilo is the midway point between two international tourist destinations, Boracay and Palawan, and the local airport is used to avoid extended travel times and also to see the sights that would be missed if one were to travel direct.
As with other cities there is a small population of foreign expatriates from Australia, Britain, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, and the United States that have taken residence in or around Iloilo—but considerably less and extremely spaced out than the housing clusters in Cebu or Manila that remind one of California's China Town. In Manila there are clusters of American expatriates in Makati or Forbes Park the same area that General McArthur lived and golfed in.
Iloilo boasts of having the highest literacy rate compared to other places in the Philippines and is home to a number of colleges and universities such as University of the Philippines, University of San Agustin and Central Philippine University. These schools offer a plethora of courses designed solely for foreign students from Pakistan, India, China, Thailand & South Korea with syllabuses tailored for their respective interests like agriculture, engineering, nursing, medicine, and most notably English; as the Philippines was an American colony for close to a century, many foreigners use the Philippines and the colleges there as their training ground to practice English before seeking entry and work in America.
There are a number of hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and ample transportation as Iloilo ranks fifth among highly urbanized and developed cities in the Philippines. It also has several restaurants that serve not only Filipino food but also international cuisines. There are at least two Japanese restaurants, two Italian restaurants, one Austrian restaurant, two Korean restaurants, one German restaurant, 12 Chinese restaurants, one Meditereanean restaurant, and three Thai restaurants.

daks2003 January 24th, 2006, 07:18 AM So "hou guo" gle ang tawag sina...ill try to find a recipe sina kay nadumduman ko naman nga manamit ina hehehe Well before i went to visit taiwan, i thought dumaguete city had the most motorcycles(scooter type) in the streets...Taiwan has a lot lot lot more pa pala! that was 95 or 96 when i visited taiwan hehehe
nice daks you've been to taiwan also. shabu shabu or as we call it huo gwo (huo=fire, guo=pot). i like this much. this is a very common food in every chinese households especially every winter. the secret is not really on the meat Daks, wala na ya ginatimpla ang karne, it's in the sauce and the soup and mas madamo ilakot mo nga veggies, seafoods or meat mas namit sya.

Its funny how you can be so pessimistic about Iloilo. You are the type of person that puts our country down with your pessimism. I think you are the one who is taking a backward leap here.
Iloilo is growing, and growing quite rapidly despite investors taking a wait-and-see attitude (until the new international airport opens). If you have spent more time in this thread or if you are really that "knowledgeable" about the current situation of iloilo you would know that.
It still wasn't mentioned who did the survey or how they came up with the results. lol ...

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.
Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).

Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.

Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.

Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.

lewdsaint January 24th, 2006, 09:02 AM City exec assures peaceful Dinagyang festival
Iloilo -- Mayor Jerry Treñas assured city residents and visitors that the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has already beefed up security measures to maintain the peace and order situation in this city during the holding of the 2006 Dinagyang Festival that officially started Friday.
"Our police personnel are very much ready. I have already meet with Police City Director Norlito Bautista and the different precinct commanders with regard to this", Treñas said in a TV interview.
Treñas said to add more police personnel in the city, request for augmentation from the PNP provincial office has been made.
Also, as part of the preparation, Treñas said, a continuing clean-up of the city is being made. To recall, the city government has launched "Iloilo Squeaks for Dinagyang" project early this year. The project involves cleaning, beautifying and putting things in order with the aim that both residents and tourists will feel comfortable and safe during the festivities. This is in cooperation with the other concerned sectors in the city.
Treñas disclosed that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is expected to lead officials who will grace this year's festival. "I have received confirmation of her arrival and coordination is still going on with the Presidential Management Staff (PMS) in relation to this," Treñas said.
According to Treñas also expected are dignitaries from other countries like the Ambassadors of Israel, Sweden, Burma and Japan; Consuls of Israel and the United States; Charge d Affairs of Nigeria and Military Attache of Israel. Also, a big delegation from Guam is expected.
Dinagyang Festival is one of the popular religious and cultural events of the city and province of Iloilo attracting both local and foreign tourists every year. This is celebrated every fourth weekend of January to honor Holy Infant Jesus. The event also provides venue to display the artistic talents of Ilonggos and its rich cultural heritage as depicted through the various activities and highlighted by the Kasadyahan and Ati Tribe competitions and the street dancing of frolicsome merrymakers

Visitors' observations of Iloilo in early times
Iloilo became of interest to the Spanish conquistadores when it was discovered to be a plentiful source of rice. In fact, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, leader of the 1565 Spanish expedition, proceeded there from Cebu in 1569 in search for food.
Miguel de Loarca, a contemporary of the Spanish governor-general, Gonzal de Ronquillo (1580-1583), in a report described Panay, referring mainly to Iloilo, as "the most fertile and well provisioned of all the islands discovered, except the island of Luzon, for it is exceedingly fertile and abounds in rice, swine, fowl, wax and honey; it produces also a great quantity of cotton and madrinaque. Its villages stand very close together and the people are healthful and well-provided, so that the Spaniards who are stricken with sickness in other islands go thither to recover their health" (Blair & Robertson, V, 1903-09).
Because of its fertile lands, Iloilo was already known during the early Spanish times as the leading rice producing area of the Philippines. In the early days of the Spanish colonization, An Augustinian missionary in Iloilo, Fr. Juan de Medina, noted that "Iloilo was the granary of all the islands in the archipelago" (Blair & Robertson, XXIII, 1903-09). On similar note, Antonio de Morga (1609), a Spanish writer of the early 17th century, described Panay and Iloilo as "abundant in rice and wine producing palm-trees and all kinds of food supplies. Its settlements along Panay River are good and rich."
The above observations of the Soaniards were confirmed by Feodor Jagor (1875), a Prussian traveler in the Philippines during 1859 and 1860 when he wrote that when the Spaniards landed in Iloilo, they found the natives dressed in cotton and silk clothes, the latter they obtained from the Chinese to whom they gave in exchange sapanwood or sibukao, gold dust, dried sea cucumbers, edible swallow's nests, food stuffs, and animal skins. Jagor further stated that the natives traded not only with China but also with Japan, Kampuchea, Siam, the Moluccas, and the Malay archipelago.
Early Spanish writers also attested to Ilonggo as having a flourishing shipbuilding industry. Both Loarca and Morga related that, considering that Panay Island contained great abundance of timber and other provisions for construction purposes, Iloilo had a number of shipyards for galleys and frigates, the most notable of which were in Arevalo and Oton (Blair & Robertson, V, 1903-09, Morga, 1609).
Later in the 19th century, visitors to Iloilo confirmed that the province had maintained its leading position. In 1856, for instance, John Bowring, British vice-consul to Hongkong, commented on his visit to the Philippines that Iloilo was "probably the richest and the most populous province in the country." He observed that "about one-half of agricultural products exported by the provinces to Manila came from Iloilo" (Bowring, 1963). Bowring also observed that not only was Iloilo the biggest in population was the largest in agricultural production, the most active in manufacturing, and one of the best instructed among the provinces" (Bowring, 1965).
On the basis of the preceding observations, it is evident that Iloilo was already the number one rice-producing area of the archipelago in early times and was clearly a leading province in the whole of Visayas in terms of population, boat-building, handicrafts and trading activities.

eazyboy January 24th, 2006, 09:43 AM not until i see a data stating that iloilo is fourth... gee! 4th? hahahaha laki ata ng agwat ng 3rd at 4th ah, i know davao is 3rd and davao is waaaaaaaaaaay waaaaaaay waaaaaaaaay ahead than iloilo, CDO is even better than iloilo kaya siguro 5th na kayo, kasi natabunan na kayo ng CDO, sheeesh, wait til you see bacolod!!! hahahahaha, bacolod will put you in 6th!
i still wont believe na 6th or 7th na ang ilowilow, pero probably in the near future, malapit na din kasi kayo maging sixth eh, with how fast other cities are catching up, iloilo will probably be eating other cities dust.
eazyboy January 24th, 2006, 09:46 AM it has also been stated there na princess city kayo! hahahaha, mukha ngang hindi reliable, dba QUEEN CITY OF THE SOUTH kayo? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA
c0kelitr0 January 24th, 2006, 09:47 AM ^^ there's a troll on the loose!
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 09:48 AM Yup, marami talagang errors ang nakasulat na articles about Iloilo sa wilipedia coz I've read there too na "Iloilo contains the only University of the Philippines campus in the Visayas region" which is outdated coz meron namang UP Cebu.
Ngayon ko lang narinig ang UP Cebu. Mas una pa pala ang UP mindanao sa Davao.
c0kelitr0 January 24th, 2006, 09:52 AM ^^ UP College Cebu mas matagal na kesa UP Mindanao
slerz January 24th, 2006, 09:55 AM ^^ really? UP Cebu is the second oldest in the Philippines next UP Diliman daw, establishe 1918... UP building here in Cebu is very old looking...
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 09:58 AM ^^ UP College Cebu mas matagal na kesa UP Mindanao
Oohh, I found this site: http://www.upou.org/administration/lc.htm
There is UP Cebu, Northern Samar and Tacloban college. UP in Iloilo is UP Visayas. What I don't get is why do they have to put college in their name instead of just UP? Isn't that a bit redundant?
c0kelitr0 January 24th, 2006, 09:59 AM because UP College Cebu is only just one college while a university is composed of several colleges.
eazyboy January 24th, 2006, 10:13 AM UP in ilowilow is a university, the colleges in cebu and leyte are colleges kasi parang branch lang siya ng main university sa ilowilow. up colleges in cebu and leyte is still under the mandate of the up visayas in ilowilow, these colleges (cebu/leyte) are headed by a dean lang.. beacause theyre just a college with the main campus in ilowilow. gets?
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 10:18 AM Now I got it: There are 6 major UP campuses (Baguio, Diliman, Manila, Los Bañps, Visayas (Iloilo) and Mindanao (Davao). throughout the Philippines plus the UPOU or UP Open University which is compose of other colleges or universities associated with the UP campus system where UP Cebu college and other campuses throughout the Philippines. I didn't know UP system this expansive.
Another wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.P._Open_University
slerz January 24th, 2006, 10:20 AM ^^kewl :okay:..
but how did UP Cebu made it as the second oldest UP unit daw next to Diliman?
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 10:22 AM So the wikipedia is 'somewhat' accurate. Perhaps, what it meant in Iloilo's article is the university campus and not just a college campus. Anyway, they shouldve reworded it better. They shouldve say that UP in iloilo is the only university campus in Visayas and not the only UP campus in Visayas.
slerz January 24th, 2006, 10:24 AM and the correct term for Cebu is "University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College"... libog baya sa ilang pamaagi :D
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 10:31 AM ^^kewl :okay:..
but how did UP Cebu made it as the second oldest UP unit daw next to Diliman?
This is the site where I got it from:
http://www.up.edu.ph/iloilo55.html
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 10:35 AM and the correct term for Cebu is "University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College"... libog baya sa ilang pamaagi :D
Mao jud.
slerz January 24th, 2006, 10:39 AM This is the site where I got it from:
http://www.up.edu.ph/iloilo55.html
so Founded in 1947, so what is this UP that is inagurated last 1918?
here's also a site of UP Cebu referred by a special someone, studying in UP Cebu :D... http://www.cebu.upv.edu.ph/main/history/beginnings.htm
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 10:55 AM Wait, the sites we got are both from UP correct? There is a conflict in their statements:
If UP Cebu claims that they were founded in 1918 which predates that of Iloilo, how in the world did UP Iloilo have grown into a 4 campus university including that of Cebu? :?
rustyboi January 24th, 2006, 11:01 AM what's the student population of UP campuses in Iloilo? any figures?
slerz January 24th, 2006, 11:07 AM Wait, the sites we got are both from UP correct? There is a conflict in their statements:
If UP Cebu claims that they were founded in 1918 which predates that of Iloilo, how in the world did UP Iloilo have grown into a 4 campus university including that of Cebu? :?
That made my mind shaky :? LoL
so which is the which?
slerz January 24th, 2006, 11:09 AM I think we should reply sa Iloilo thread 8, baka pagalitan tayo dito....
Askal82 January 24th, 2006, 11:47 AM @ slerz:
Taken from: www.upv.edu.ph/site/about.php+UP+Iloilo&hl
"Founded on the first of July 1947...."
"From its humble beginning, UPV has, since then, grown into a four-campus university( Miagao, Iloilo City, Cebu and Tacloban) with five colleges and one school (Colleges of Fisheries, Arts and Sciences, Management, Cebu, Tacloban and the School of Technology) offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in fisheries education, the arts and sciences, environment and technology, and management."
Taken from: www.cebu.upv.edu.ph/main/history/beginnings.htm
"The University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College (UPVCC), as it is now, has have had a very long and colorful history to tell.
UPVCC was formally inaugurated on May 3, 1918...."
Baka kaya ginawang extension ang UP cebu college ng UPV which is headquartered in Iloilo kasi university na eh, so if it was founded in 1947 its maybe correct. UP in Cebu might be the 2nd oldest UP college unit but not the 2nd oldest University of UP. waahhh, ang gulo!!
Kaiser January 24th, 2006, 12:02 PM CONGRATS ON ILOILO'S 8th THREAD:applause::applause::applause:
slerz January 24th, 2006, 12:07 PM yup, it's the second unit...
Iloilo is the second progressive city after Manila that's why UP as a university was founded in Iloilo whereas UP Cebu is a unit not a university...
"This was just a small college then offering only preparatory medicine. This college took off to become one of Cebu's most reputable"... when it opened last 1918.
waaaaaaa!
wecky January 24th, 2006, 12:13 PM thanks Chymera for starting the thread VIII ... hehehe .. I was so knackered yesterday I barely finished posting sa thread VII ... hehehe.
Anyway, congratulations ! We're on thread VIII na ... I wish to read more news and infos here ... cheers !
wecky January 24th, 2006, 12:21 PM Dinagyang foundation will provide food allowance to cops: Bautista
By Ruby P. Silubrico
ILOILO City Police Office Director Norlito Bautista said Monday that Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. will appropriate some food allowance to the police on January 28 and 29.
Said dates are the highlights of the Dinagyang Festival.
"But, with or without food allowance from the IDFI, we will still deploy maximum personnel because our primary concern is to secure the people," Bautista said.
"But if course, it's better if they give us food allowance," he added.
Earlier, Bautista said that 1,078 police personnel and 5,022 force multipliers would be deployed. The latter refers to police interns, ROTC, barangay tanods, communicators and First Aid personnel.
Six sniffing dogs (K-9) will also be deployed to help detect drugs and explosive materials.
"We will deploy maximum personnel to ensure that no untoward incidents will happen and make sure that the tourists, dignitaries and spectators will be fully guarded," Bautista said.
Warning
Bautista also warned the public against creating any annoyance so they won't be detained or charged.
Don't drink too much and do not provoke other people to avoid fights, he said. He advised establishments not to serve alcoholic drinks inside bottles. Instead, they should serve such inside plastic. Alcoholic drinks in bottles or cans would be confiscated.
Eight container vans will be situated in several parts of the city to serve as temporary jails for those who create disturbances during the festivities. These vans will be located in Solis, Iznart, Yulo, JM Basa, Arsenal, Ledesma, Valeria, Guanco Streets and Plaza Libertad.
"Do not bring expensive things like jewelry and cellphone because these invite snatchers," he said.
He also advised women against wearing seductive clothes and shorts to avoid humiliation from revelers who might take advantage of the situation.
Checkpoints
He discouraged people with large backpacks from entering Iloilo City as this would make the police suspicious, thus frisk them.
Bautista revealed that checkpoints in all entry areas to the city will be in place in order to avoid the entry of deadly weapons and illegal drugs.
Members of the Metro Iloilo Development Council will put their checkpoints, too. They are Leganes, San Miguel, Sta. Barbara and Oton.
Last year's Dinagyang celebration was noted as the most peaceful compared to the previous years because no casualties were reported and only slight disagreements between groups of teenagers took place./RPS

@kirby: Manila and Iloilo as well. I am international :)
Askal82 January 25th, 2006, 12:27 AM yup, it's the second unit...
Iloilo is the second progressive city after Manila that's why UP as a university was founded in Iloilo whereas UP Cebu is a unit not a university...
"This was just a small college then offering only preparatory medicine. This college took off to become one of Cebu's most reputable"... when it opened last 1918.
waaaaaaa!
That was before though.. lol
However, I doubt if UPV is the 2nd oldest university campus. I think UPLB or UPBaguio even predates UPV. As far as I know UPMin is the latest UP campus.
Also the oldest institution of higher western learning in Asia (not yet attaining university status) is San Carlos University right? It even predates that of UST.

wecky January 25th, 2006, 03:43 AM Dinagyang theme apt for country's present political situation
By Maricar M. Calubiran
Iloilo City -- Amid the political turmoil gripping the country, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas exhorted political leaders to heal wounds and unite for the betterment of our nation. He made this call during the opening salvo of 2006 Iloilo Dinagyang Festival last Friday.
Treñas said this year's theme "Healing Through Devotion to Sto. Niño" is appropriate for our country's leaders. He noted that the country is always in turmoil because of our political leaders' attitude.
Treñas observed that in Iloilo City, the unity of the political leaders are shown through the degree of cooperation they have in the yearly Dinagyang festival which is in honor of Sr. Sto. Niño. He said local officials normally join hands for the success of the festival.
Treñas added that it is the patron saint Sr. Sto. Niño that gives the Ilonggos strength to continue the holding of the festival. He said it is the people's devotion to Sr. Sto. Niño that made them strong and positive on the success of the festival.
The opening salvo last Friday started with the parade of seven participating tribes in the Kasadyahan festival in the morning and parade of 20 participating Ati tribes in the afternoon. Hundreds of people trooped to the city's main thoroughfares to witness the opening salvo.
During the opening salvo on Friday afternoon, two contesting tribes in the Dinagyang festival, Tribu Bantu and Angola have already made their initial performance before the chief executive has declared the opening of the festival.
Coinciding with the opening salvo was the arrival of the oldest Sto. Niño in the country the Sto. Niño de Cebu. The image, fetched by San Jose parish priest Fr. Roy Margallo from Cebu, arrived around 2 p.m. at the Iloilo Airport.
The Sto. Niño de Cebu was welcomed by Treñas, officials of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation and this year's hermano mayor Oscar Ledesma Arenas and his wife Rose.
The image was then brought to the San Jose church in Plaza Libertad through a motorcade participated by a number of vehicles. Students of Catholic schools located along the motorcade route threw confetti and flowers as the image, displayed on top of a pick up, pass by.
Upon arrival at the San Jose church the Sto. Niño de Cebu was enthroned in the altar then a holy mass was celebrated in its honor.

chymera00 January 25th, 2006, 05:45 AM Tupas: Panay Railway rehabilitation ok but…
By GEROME DALIPE IV
ILOILO – Gov. Niel Tupas supports the plan of a German firm to rehabilitate the Panay Railway System, Inc. (PRI).
But Tupas revealed the province has no sufficient rocks, sand and basalt that would supply the contractor that would rehabilitate the 117-kilometer railway transit system from Iloilo City to Roxas City in Capiz.
Herman Fidler of the Seimens Transportation Systems, Inc. (STS), a German firm, recently presented to the media the latest executive summary of the PRI rehabilitation project.
Along with Fidler was Dale Coleman, project manager, Rail Mobility Division of the TÜV SÜD Group, a technical service company active in the strategic business segments industry, mobility and people.
Siemens supplies technology and engineering industry particularly in the innovation and efficient rail solutions for mass transit and mainline applications in the rail industry.
Though he had not met with the Siemens officials, Tupas considers the revival and rehabilitation of the Panay Railways as one of the vital projects he wants the provincial government to pursue.
“It is good that they will be putting a railway system. The revenue of the province would increase. The project would also help us improve our mobility in the nearby province,” stressed Tupas.
However, Tupas said he is not certain if the province could provide sufficient rocks and basalt during the rehabilitation of the railway.
“In the flood control project of the province of Iloilo alone, there were reports we are short of gravel and sand,” said Tupas.
The 117-kilometer railway system will cross La Paz, Pavia, Sta. Barbara International Airport, New Lucena, Pototan, Dueñas, Passi in Iloilo and Dumarao, Cuartero, Dao, Panit-an and Roxas City in Capiz.
The Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) of Germany, KFW-Hermes in France, Coface in Austria (OEKB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are among of the sources of funds.
Phase 1 of the above project is projected at $658.41 million. It covers civil works ($164.71 million); rolling stock ($168.97 million); engineering and maintenance ($104.67 million) and the compensation of residents that will be affected by the rehabilitation ($50 to $60 million).
The repair includes the miscellaneous items cost $100.94 million; right-of-way acquisition ($12.55 million) and the interest payment ($25.79 million).

slerz January 25th, 2006, 09:33 AM Newest fast craft
service launched
The New Bullet Corp. yesterday launched a new fast craft to service passengers from Bacolod and Iloilo.
Luis T. Ong, NBC president, yesterday said Blue Sky is bigger and more comfortable than the Bullet Express, and offers an affordable fare rate -- P150 for economy class, P260 for tourist class and P290 for business class. He said the seacraft, which could accommodate 316 passengers, will start its operation next week.
The blessing of the vessel was held yesterday at the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. port at the Reclamation Area, in Bacolod City. Blue Sky is owned by local businessmen in the city.
Ong said "their company has one vessel for a start, and they are coordinating the schedule of Blue Sky with that of Ocean Jet, owned by a Cebu group." He said Blue Sky runs at 22 knots per hour or a travel time of about one hour and 10 minutes from Bacolod to Iloilo and vice versa.
"When they bought the vessel from Japan it was already named Blue Sky so they decided to retain the name," Ong said. He said the vessel was built for rough seas. Its schedule of trips from Bacolod to Iloilo is at 6 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 2:20 p.m., and from Iloilo to Bacolod at 7:40 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.*CGS

INVESTMENT PROMOTIONS AND TOURISM
The year 2006 is Visit Iloilo-Guimaras Year, and the province has joined hands with the city government of Iloilo and Guimaras provincial government in aggressively promoting Iloilo as an investment and tourism destination.
The construction of the P6.2-billion New Iloilo Airport Development Project in Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan has already started to attract foreign investors to our province, and preliminary discussions are underway for them to locate in the vicinity of the new airport.
We have also discussed with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) regarding the putting up of an export processing zone in the area near the airport. In the weeks and months ahead, we will firm up this project proposal so that we can exploit the strategic advantage that the new airport project will provide Iloilo.
This year, we will pursue two major projects that will enhance the competitiveness of Iloilo in its bid to become the next investment center of the country.
As I mentioned earlier, the old IRC will be vacated and subsequently demolished. On its site, I propose for the construction of a multi-story, mixed-use convention center and commercial and government office building. One of the handicaps of Iloilo in promoting itself as a convention center is the unavailability of a facility that could accommodate 3,000 delegates. This is a need that we intend to fill. Being situated at the heart of the city, this convention center will definitely give a big boost to our bid to attract more conventions and draw more visitors. This will help our hotel industry and other businesses.
I would like to ask the support of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for the realization of this project.
Another major project I am contemplating this year is the establishment of an Information Technology or IT Park on the property situated at the Magsaysay Village beside the Iloilo Sports Complex.
As you all know, there is a boom in the call center industry, which has the potential to employ thousands of young professionals, and Iloilo is one of the areas that is high on the list for operators as a location.
With this in mind, we might as well provide the infrastructure that is IT-ready to attract these investors and persuade them to locate in Iloilo. Other LGUs such as Leyte have already put up a similar project, and the returns are high. This way, the province can generate more revenues and help bring employment for our college graduates.
Both projects will serve as the flagships of the province’s Economic Enterprise program to broaden our income base and enable us to raise more funds for the ever-growing needs of our people. These will signal the big, bold steps that the Tupas administration is taking to accelerate the development of the province.

This is really good news kung matutuloy...iloilo's economy is moving very fast...as fast as this thread...ang galing thread 8 n tyo...

Hey, is it true that there are many high-rise buildings in Mandurriao district? I can't wait for 2007! Maybe then we will be seeing the very beautiful airport. Then after some time, seasonal and chartered international flights especially from Europe will be catered here. Oh how I love to talk about airports...

oo a convention center will be built beside the capitol (proposed completion - 2008). I dunno if the two structures will be connected.
The photos of another proposed Convention Center posted by Dinho is supposed to be built in the Iloilo Business Park (Near Iloilo Business Hotel). This is what ferrersky was talking about.

Dinho, do you know what the two structures connected to the Convention Center (the one you posted) are? Please tell us more details about the Iloilo Business Park, is it just another name for the Iloilo Corporate Center?

wecky January 26th, 2006, 02:28 AM DINAGYANG FEVER
Over 1,000 cops, troops to secure Dinagyang '06
By Ronilo L. Pamonag and Maricar M. Calubiran
Over a thousand personnel from the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines will be securing this year's Dinagyang Festival.
Iloilo City Police Office director, Senior Superintendent Norlito Bautista revealed that the PNP and the AFP will be deploying exactly 1,216 of their personnel for the City's top tourist attraction, with the highlights on January 28 and 29.
"With the security personnel that we are having now, we are hopeful that the Dinagyang Festival 2006 will be peaceful and orderly,"; Bautista said during yesterday morning's briefing with the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps.
These will be backed by what Bautista calls 'force multipliers,' numbering 5,022 from the Red Cross, Criminology interns, cadets and cadettes from the various Reserve Officers Training Course units, barangay tanods and radio communication groups.
All in all, there will be a total of 6,238 security personnel that will be deployed for this year's revelries.
Bautista also mentioned that the Armed Forces will be deploying six K-9 teams—both bomb and drug sniffing dogs.
They have also borrowed eight container vans from shipping companies to be used as detention cells for unruly revelers. The container vans will be placed in eight points in the City Proper.
Bautista further said that the police is securing entry points to the City-both air and seaports.
Sting operations have also be conducted to net drug pushers taking advantage of the festive mood.
SHUN SEXY CLOTHES
At the same time, Bautista asked for the support of the community.
"If they see suspicious persons, they should notify the police,"; he said.
In a security guideline they distributed to the media, the police advised not to wear valuable items, nor bring a big amount of money.
They also advised against the display of mobile phones while walking.
"Never wear seductive clothes and shorts to avoid embarrassment and harassment,"; the guideline stresses.
Bautista added that, as much as possible, revelers should not bring with them backpacks, and "avoid too much drinking of alcoholic beverages to refrain misunderstanding.";
CRIME FREE
Meanwhile, Insp. Dande Deocampo, precinct commander of City Proper Police Station (police precinct 1) hopes to have a crime-free festival as they have already waged war against suspected snatchers and pickpockets.
During last Friday's opening salvo, he said, police rounded up at least 11 suspected pickpockets in the city as part of their preparation for this year's Dinagyang festival.
Out of the 11 suspects, two came from Davao City, six from Iloilo City and another three suspects from Bacolod City. Most of them have previous cases based on the records of the police precinct 1. The suspects are still detained at the detention cell of the police precinct 1.
Deocampo however said there was no record of petty crime incidents during the opening salvo and they want to maintain it.
Deocampo noted that most of the reported incidents during the event are pickpockets, snatching, violation of BP 6 or violation for carrying deadly and bladed weapon such as knives and other pointed instruments, drunkenness and acts of lasciviousness.
As this developed, the police had issued five important security measure and guidelines for civilians. These are: civilians should never wear valuable items and bring big amount of cash that will attract snatchers attention, never display cell phones while walking in the streets, never wear seductive clothes and shorts to avoid embarrassment and harassment and avoid too much drinking of alcoholic beverages to refrain misunderstanding and always walk with a companion and circle of friends.
The police also prepared several container vans for violators during the affair. The container vans will be stationed near each five judging areas and those areas frequently used as hang outs of the revelers and merry makers. The container vans will be used as temporary cell for drunk merry makers.

wecky January 26th, 2006, 02:31 AM Arroyo, foreign dignitaries lead Dinagyang '06 VIPs
By Ronilo L. Pamonag
Iloilo City -- Security will be extra tighter for this year's Dinagyang Festival as several Very Important Persons (VIPs) are expected to watch the highlight of the City's annual top tourist attraction.
President Arroyo is scheduled to fly to the City this Saturday, and will be spending the night here.
Although she is not expected to watch the tribes contest on Sunday, she will be attending the holy mass at San Jose parish to be held before the competition. She is also scheduled to inaugurate government projects and grace social functions.
The Philippine Information Agency, however, stressed that Arroyo's visit has not yet been 100% confirmed.
The Dinagyang committee has also released a list of foreign dignitaries who have confirmed their visit.
These are Israeli Ambassador Yeshua Sagi, his wife Hana Sagi, and attaché Ziv David; Swedish representative Fredrik Agerhem and Commercial Councilor Sara Aulin; Nigerian Consul Samson Igegboje, who will be accompanied by Mr. James Amangbu; United States Consul General Richard Haynes, and Matthew Taylor of the Anti-Fraud Division; Japanes Ambassador Ryuichiro Yamazaki; Nozaki Seiki of the Japan International Cooperation Agency; World Bank's Ming Zhang and Chris Pablo; and Myanmar Ambassador U Thaung Tun and wife Sandar Lwin.
The Dinagyang Foundation has arranged for their hotel bookings, and they will be assigned each a member of the City Council as point person.

I can't see the pic, Chy. :)
Hello everyone..!!!
musta na..??I hope beside Iloilo Business Hotel na lng ang Iloilo Convention Center para spacious gd katama.. :) :)
musta man da sa imo Kianshi. The proposed Iloilo Convention Center in the old Rehab area is from the "Iloilo's Provincial Government" proposal, not of the city one. The city under Trenas is planning to build its own convention center depending sa availabilty sang fund and location. Right now, the city government has no definite location for its own Convention Center. Hopefully, they'll use the area within the Diversion Road.
Gosh sorry for what i have written hehe... ngayon ko lang uli nabasa wat i meant was "perspective of the future iloilo convention center" hehe...
I think there's a misconception of the proposed Iloilo Convention Center. The article posted earlier is the plan developed by the Iloilo Provincial Government. The city government "might" come up with their own proposal in the next few months or years. Remember that the city government's budget is absolutely different from that of the province. The city of Iloilo is functioning independently from the provincial board so basically, there's no correlation happening between the two.

A visit to Iloilo gives a visitor a feeling of a place with a rich and glorious past. Standing side by side on a busy street is an Internet café and an Antillean mansion. For such is the charm of Iloilo, the cradle of old world genteel aristocracy that has morphed with new age technology like an eclectic tapestry.
When the Spaniards came to Iloilo in the 16th century, they discovered a people with two outstanding characteristics: industry and flair. The women had a penchant for beautiful clothes and jewelry and the men were driven to trade and industry. As early as the 19th century when most of the Philippines was still in siesta, Iloilo’s international harbor was thriving with direct shipping lines to Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, England, Europe and America. Aside from the staples of agriculture and fishing, her textile weaving industry has been on a large commercial scale and because of an abundance in timber, her shipyards were flourishing. So remarkable was the growth of commerce and trade that Spain’s Queen Regent, Maria Cristina elevated the status of Iloilo to that of a city in 1899. Inscribed in her coat of arms are the words, “La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad de Iloilo.”
Thus Iloilo’s golden age had begun… her port was opened to international trade which gave way to the sugar rush during the Commonwealth period. This served as a backbone of Iloilo’s unprecedented growth. The fertile plains of Panay and the rich volcanic soil of Negros were ideal for sugarcane. Exports boomed and sugar farming became a world-class industry. A new breed of wealth emerged – the sugar barons. A number of sugar centrals mushroomed and more work opportunities were available; warehouses lined Muelle Loney, filled to the hilt with sugar to be transloaded to international vessels. Iloilo then became the undisputed leader among the provinces. Sugar money built majestic tree-lined ancestral mansions around the city, afforded family travels to Europe and to the world, opened new business establishments, bought carriages, automobiles and a fleet of servants for the privileged. Because of the expansion of trade and the rapid growth of business and economic activities, a number of foreign and local firms built offices and outlets – banks, stock exchange offices, machine shops, warehouses, retail shops, printing presses, educational institutions, medical facilities, commercial firms and social clubs.

Let's dissect Tupas SOPA: :)
"Iloilo-Guimaras-Iloilo City" firming their commitment to promote Iloilo (?the province) as an investment and tourism hub? Wow, this is very a high-profile vision, just in case. Tupas, at last, decided to move forward the province's agricultural industry towards commercialism and industrialisation. I hope that projects listed above will be supported by Sangguniang Panlalawigan. The creation of IT Park and Convention Center to top the list for this year projects signal Iloilo's (the province) bid for economic prosperity. These two projects alone can generate good jobs for many Ilonggos' graduates in the next few years. At the same time, these projects can help augment provincial revenues to accelerate development and sustainability of the province.
The most-awaited opening of the New Iloilo Airport alone brought many local and foreign investors to take a look at Iloilo's capacity for future development. The planned Export Processing Zone is a good complimentary extension to further widen its attempt to raise bigger provincial proceeds.
All in all, "if" things mentioned above will be put into reality, Iloilo's economy is in the right trek to progress.

By Jinki H. Beldia
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/25/drjosettebiyo1.jpg
Dr. Josette Biyo talks about her planet at the book
launching of " A Trip to Planet Biyo"
Anything that glimmers in the late night sky is a feast for the eye and a journey for the heart and mind. One does not need to understand the complexities of science to appreciate the colossal picture above him to know that what is bigger can be held not by strong hands but by a believing heart.
Halfway through my grilled chicken, my name was called out and so in an instant, I froze wishing Mr. Don Protasio had put my name on the bottom of the list. There I was, about to shake the hand of "a planet" and my fingers were greasy from a short but interesting engagement with Mang Inasal's specialty.
Dr. Josette Talamera-Biyo's book preview was simply resplendent. It was a heartening experience listening to somebody with a huge name hung over our solar system but still has her feet planted firmly on the ground. And not just in any ground, but here in Iloilo where she struggled, tirelessly built ladders(and continues to engineer these long and fruitful climbs bringing along her students with her) to reach the cosmic skies. Just as we all thought that a great sense of humor and faith in our own personal God were enough to survive life's little misfortunes, there's a truth we all ought to know. Those are the two exact things that brought Dr. Biyo to her planet.
I liken Dr. Biyo to a beautiful leviathan ship that carries with her not only ordinary people, but young people with dreams and the will to make them come true by dedicating themselves to endless discoveries. This ship travels with them, cradles them and most of all, gives them the determination to reach their destination.
I sat at the back of the room quietly with so many questions inside my head and just like when you're in a classroom full of screaming kids with all sorts of questions, I ended up with my mouth shut not knowing which thought to entertain first. However, I got my answers the day after my book was signed. With a cup of coffee and my paperworks all behind me, I flipped each page looking for the answer to my questions.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/01/25/biyo.book.gif
"A Trip to Planet Biyo" is a charming autobiography. Unlike autobiographies of famous people we just pick up from bookstores, this one gives the Ilonggo reader (or in my case, somebody who has lived quite a number of years in Iloilo) a sense of belonging. It feels like reading about the success of a next door neighbor you know by heart. The only thing I was able to say to Dr. Biyo the afternoon of her book preview was my name and how it's spelled, although I wanted so much to ask her if she had esoteric powers to chase villains away since she's now the captain of Planet Biyo. Silly, I know. But when I was across somebody who had a planet named after her, I experienced a sweet and temporary regression. I was like a kid having my book signed by a superhero and this time, she's somebody else's mother who lives in the same city as I do.
The book is a picturesque description of Dr. Biyo's past (The Birth of a Star), a time when she experienced the early punches of having to survive the life of the poor and learning how to live within one's own means; the numerous successes she has been experiencing in the recent past and present (Planet Biyo Revolves) and her tribute to the most important people around her (The Stars in the Pinoy Galaxy).
You will feel the beauty of the book when you get to the end of it and you know that it is still humility that holds this person and her family together.
A selfless educator, a loving mother and an inspiration to all, Dr. Biyo is world champion when it comes to teaching. She was the winner of the 2002 Intel Excellence in Teaching Award and a recipient of other major national and international awards. What she has recently achieved is that planet between Mars and Jupiter named after her by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lincoln Laboratory, USA.
Here's one for your new 2006 collection. I just got back from my own trip.

Lettermen assured of safety
The well loved Lettermen trio have been assured of their security during their performance here in Iloilo on January 29, 2006.
Organizers of the Lettermen concert here assured that the famous singing group can expect nothing else except the equally famous warmth and hospitality of the Ilonggos who are eagerly awaiting the internationally acclaimed concert artists.
The assurance was made in response to American queries on the security situation in Southern Philippines where the trio is making a three-city stop — Iloilo, Cebu, and Davao, as part of their Philippine concert series.
The Lettermen is one of the most popular and enduring singing groups in America who have recorded numerous hit records and performed in thousands of concerts across the United States and overseas since they were formed in 1960. To their credit are a long list of immortal love songs inlcuding The Way You Look Tonight, When I Fall In Love, Theme From A Summer Place, Put Your Head on My Shoulder, Hurt So Bad, Graduation Day, and Shangri-La.
Organizers here said the only hazard that the trio could face would be from excessive adulation as fans of the trio, not only from Iloilo but also from the rest of the region, are eagerly awaiting their historic appearance in this part of the country.
The Iloilo City government itself is laying the red carpet welcome for the famed singing group as city mayor Jerry P. Treñas has declared January 29, 2006 as a Red Letterman Day in the city.
It was also reported that the mayor will personally hand over the symbolic keys to the city to the Lettermen as soon as they arrive. To further put emphasis to the special gesture, the hand-over will take place at the Freedom Grandstand in front of thousands of spectators during the height of the Dinagyang tribes competition. The city's officialdom consider the Lettermen concert here as a fitting crescendo to the annual Dinagyang Festival which is the city's showcase tourism event.
The Lettermen are performing at the Rose Memorial Auditorium of Central Philippine University for the benefit of the Dr. Graciano Lopez Jaena Foundation. The Foundation, led by former Iloilo Vice Governor Demy Sonza, is using the proceeds from the concert to put up a shrine for Graciano Lopez-Jaena, the Ilonggo national hero. Reportedly, the Foundation is also contemplating an expedition to Spain to look for the remains of Dr. Lopez-Jaena who died a pauper and was buried in an anonymous grave in that country.

kirby21 January 26th, 2006, 08:56 AM Hello everyone..!!!
musta na..??I hope beside Iloilo Business Hotel na lng ang Iloilo Convention Center para spacious gd katama.. :) :)
Hello to you, Kianshi. I guess we're very much okay.
May I say that Iloilo Convention Center to be erected near the Iloilo Business Hotel is quite impossible. The area right is teeming with business or at the same time owned by other businessmen already. Besides, the proposed convention center as stated by Tupas is of the provincial government of Iloilo and not by the Iloilo City. Hopefully, they'll start the bidding for the proposed 500-million Convention Center soon. Cheers !
kirby21 January 26th, 2006, 08:58 AM Residents of Iloilo are known for its sweet sounding melodious way of speaking. Non-Ilonggos are amazed how sweet residents of this island are that one would not suspect that people are already fighting. Yes, we're still sweet even if we argue.
Amo ni ya ang tunay nga ilonggo... :)
wow. It's really impressive! Malumanay gid man maghambal ang mga Ilonggos, ell. :)
kirby21 January 26th, 2006, 09:15 AM Let me share with you some facts of banking system in the Philippines taken from several official websites. Here it goes:
http://www.pnb.com.ph/Images/bg_np_01.jpg
PHILIPPINE NATIONAL BANK
The Philippine National Bank was established as a government-owned banking institution on July 22, 1916 with headquarters in the old Masonic Temple along Escolta, Manila. Its primary mandate was to provide financial services to Philippine industry and agriculture and support the government's economic development effort. World War I, then raging in Europe, generated huge demand for the country's major exports namely: sugar, copra, coconut oil, Manila hemp and tobacco. However, not much was being done to develop the industries that produced these sought-after crops since access tocredit facilities was limited then. To solve this problem, Henderson Martin, Vice Governor of the Philippines, together with Mr. Miguel Cuaderno (who later became Central Bank governor) drafted the charter fora national bank.
On February 4, 1916, Public Act 2612 was passed by the Philippine legislature providing for the establishment of the PNB to replace the small P1 million government-owned Agricultural Bank. PNB's first head office was the Masonic Temple along Escolta, the then "Wall Street of the Philippines" in the bustling district of Sta. Cruz in Manila. An American, H. Parker Willis, was its first president.
"The First Universal Bank in the country"
With PNB's establishment, Filipinos found a bank of their own. PNB was authorized to grant short and long-term loans to agriculture and industry. The Filipino farmers then could avail of loans with interest between 8% to 10% per annum. PNB was also authorized to receive deposits, open foreign credits and rediscount bills. It was also given the special power to issue circulating notes. As such, PNB functioned as the de facto Central Bank of the country until 1949.
On July 24, 1916, PNB established its first branch in Iloilo.
In 1917, PNB marked its entry in the field of international banking when it opened its New York Branch. The following year, it established five more domestic branches and another overseas branch in Shanghai, China.
PNB briefly ceased operations in January 1942 but reopened the next month under the supervision of Japanese authorities. After the Second World War, PNB reopened immediately and acquired the assets and assumed the liabilities of the banking division of the National Treasury.
With the establishment of the Central Bank in 1949, PNB's role as issuer of currency notes, custodianship of bank reserves, sole depository of government funds and clearing house of the banking system ceased.
"PNB launched the first on-line Electronic
Data Processing System in the entire Far East"
In 1955, it was authorized to operate as an investment bank with powers to own shares and to issue debentures.
In 1963, it established the National Investment and Development Corporation to engage primarily in long-term and equity financing of business ventures.
PNB transferred to its new Head Office along Escolta in 1966 and launched the first on-line Electronic Data Processing System in the entire Far East.
Between 1967 and 1979, PNB continued to expand its operations by opening offices in London, Singapore, Djakarta, Honolulu and Amsterdam. In the domestic field, it opened 14 provincial branches. It was also during this period that the Bank started the Dollar Remittance Program.
In 1980, PNB became the first universal bank in the country. However, it encountered operational difficulties in the mid-80s as a result of the economic downturn triggered by the assassination of Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr and had to be assisted by the government in 1986.
Privatization of PNB...
The privatization of the Bank started when 30 per cent of its outstanding stocks was offered to the public and its stocks were listed in the stock exchange in 1989.
In 1992, PNB became the first Philippine bank to reach the P100 billion mark in assets.
Also in 1992, a second public offering of its shares was issued to continue its privatization.
In 1995, the Bank moved to its new headquarters at the PNB Financial Center in Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.
In 1996, the Securities and Exchange Commission approved the Bank's new Articles of Incorporation and by-laws and the change in the status of PNB from a government-based to a private corporation with the control of the government reduced to 46 per cent. At the turnover rites on July 23, 1996, President Fidel V. Ramos declared:
"PNB is the bank for the Filipino wherever
he or she may be-- in the country's centers
of commerce and industry, in the far
reaches of the countryside, and even in
many places across the globe."
A New Beginning
In early 2000, the Lucio Tan Group became the single biggest private stockholder.
The group pumped in nearly P20 billion fresh capital in less than one year-the largest capital build-up to date in the country. This was done to emphasize the commitment of the new stockholders' group to the improvement of the Bank's financial condition, which has been incurring losses in operations, due to poor asset quality.
In late-2000, when the Bank suffered huge withdrawals mainly from the government accounts, the government provided financial assistance of P25 billion.
In May 2002, the Government and the Lucio Tan Group sealed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that embodies the provisions that will help turn the Bank around. It includes, among others, the settlement of government's liquidity assistance by way of increasing government's stake in the Bank from 16.58% to 44.98% that is now equal to the Lucio Tan Group's 44.98% from 68%.
In about five years' time, the government and the Lucio Tan Group plan to jointly sell a majority stake in PNB to a strategic investor.
Following the Senior Management’s Good Bank-Bad Bank strategy, PNB finally posted an income of P52 million (as restated from an earlier reported figure of P168 million, due to changes in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) in 2003, after several years of being in the red. The Bank was able to repeat this feat and reported an income of P353 million by end-2004. Truly, the Bank has been able to sustain its momentum towards full rehabilitation and is very well on its way in becoming one of the country’s most admired banks once more.
The Bank remains as one of the largest banks in the country with a wide array of competitive banking products to answer for the diverse needs of its huge clientele including more than 2 million depositors.
PNB maintains its leadership in the overseas remittance business
with remittance centers in the United States, Canada, England, Spain,
the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hong Kong, Japan,
Singapore, Malaysia and the Middle East countries.
Complementing PNB's banking activities are its subsidiaries like PNB General Insurers, a non-life insurance company; PNB Capital, an investment bank; PNB Securities, a stock brokerage outfit and PNB Forex, which engages in foreign exchange trading. It also has a majority stake in PNB-Japan Leasing Corp. For life insurance requirements of PNB clients, it has a substantial equity stake in Beneficial PNB Life.

BANK OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS
154 Years of Banking Leadership
Philippine banking has a long and colorful history. It began in 1828 when, as the Philippines reaped the benefits of increased trade, King Ferdinand VII of Spain issued a decree mandating the establishment of a public bank in the Philippines.
However, it took 23 years before that bank could become a reality. The man behind the actual organization of the bank was no less than the governor-general of the Philippines at that time, His Excellency Antonio de Urbiztondo y Eguia.
Gov. de Urbiztondo was a marquis of Solana in Spain who was named governor-general of the Philippines in 1850. His term of office was characterized by many administrative innovations, so it was not surprising that six years later, he would be called back to Madrid to take on a bigger role as Spain's new minister of war.
As the highest-ranking government official in the Philippines, Gov. de Urbiztondo called for the support of the Junta de Autoridades (a committee comprising of civil and ecclesiastical officials) in approving the bank's statutes and by-laws. The junta approved these statutes and by-laws on August 1, 1851, but it was understood that such approval had to be confirmed by the Spanish Crown.
The bank was called El Banco Español Filipino de Isabel 2, in honor of the reigning queen of Spain – Isabella II, daughter of King Ferdinand VII, who passed away in 1830. The bank's office was located at the Royal Custom house (Aduana) in Intramuros. (Intramuros was the original Manila, a European-style city enclosed by formidable stone walls.)
The first managers of the bank were Jose Maria Tuason and Fernando Aguirre, who each took turns serving as managing director every year. While the members of the bank's highest policy-making board were essentially civil and ecclesiastical officials, there was also a businessman whom the Spanish Crown named to represent the business community of Manila. The man was Antonio de Ayala of the prominent Casa Roxas, precursor of Ayala y Cia, which is now Ayala Corporation.
The royal decree that confirmed the creation of El Banco Español Filipino de Isabel 2 also gave the bank the exclusive privilege to issue paper money, which antedated the currency-issuing authority of the post-war Central Bank of the Philippines by about a hundred years. (The present central bank, the official issuer of Philippine currency, started operations only in 1949.) The original bank notes were collectively called pesos fuertes (PF), Spanish for "strong pesos."
The first bank notes (or paper money) in the Philippines had the issue date May 1, 1852 and could be redeemed in Mexican coins in gold or silver. Apart from carrying the name of the bank as issuer of the currency, the bank notes also bore the portrait of the woman for whom the bank was named – Queen Isabella II.
Coincidentally, the first transaction of the bank was a lending transaction recorded on May 1, 1852, in which the bank discounted a promissory note from a Chinese client. Three days later, the bank recorded its first deposit from its first depositor.
On September 3, 1869, the bank officially dropped the name of the queen after she was ousted from the Spanish throne during a revolution a year earlier. Like her father's reign, Isabella's rule had been stormy. Hence, since 1869, the bank was known simply as El Banco Español Filipino.
Decades later, the management of the bank decided to move out to where the business activity was. Binondo, on the northern side of the Pasig river, had emerged as the new center of business growth and, thus, gained more economic prominence than Intramuros.
The Chinese dominated the retail traffic while British merchants controlled the export-import business. Rosario Street (now Quintin Paredes) became the center of retail business while Escolta was the place for the finest of American and European shops. These were profitable sources of new business for El Banco Español Filipino after it relocated to No. 4 Plaza Cervantes in Binondo in January of 1892, on a piece of land acquired from the Dominican Order.
Through the years, the bank had a close link with the Spanish Crown that even the establishment of its first branch had to be approved by authorities in Madrid. In fact, it took a royal order in 1896 to enable the bank to open branches, although, again, this authority was still subject to clearance by Spain's minister of the colonies.
The bank originally planned to open its first branch in Central Luzon during the first decade of its operations, which was sometime in the 1850s. The reason for this was the emergence of the region as a sugar-producing area. During that time, sugar was exported from this region, making the product a major source of income for local producers.
But the plan to put up this first branch did not materialize. By the time the bank was ready in 1897, Central Luzon had been overshadowed by Iloilo and the Panay provinces in terms of economic prominence. This explains why the bank's first branch was established in Iloilo instead, on March 15, 1897.
Following the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898, in which Spain ceded the Philippines and other territories to the United States, the bank promptly shed off its Spanish character and converted into a Philippine institution. Years later, in 1912, as a result of an earlier decision of the stockholders to rename the bank, El Banco Español Filipino became officially known as the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), or Banco de las Islas Filipinas. Under the American administration, the bank was allowed to continue issuing Philippine pesos, although no longer on an exclusive basis.
The period of rebuilding after World War II saw BPI getting actively involved in the development of industries. Although its conversion to a private bank during the American regime resulted in the loss of many privileges previously granted to it by the Spanish Crown, the bank continued to do its share in nation building.
In 1969, the Ayala Corporation, which had been associated with the bank since the start (either through a partner or a representative sitting on the board), became the dominant shareholder group. Following this change in the ownership structure, BPI soon became the financial flagship of the Ayala group of companies.
The ascendancy of the Ayala business house among the bank's shareholder groups led to significant changes in the way the first bank in the Philippines conducted its business during the latter half of the 20th century. For instance, the bank fast-tracked its growth by engaging in a merger with Peoples Bank and Trust Company in 1974. This was followed by the merger with or acquisition of Commercial Bank and Trust Company (1981), Ayala Investment and Development Corporation (1982), Makati Leasing and Finance Corporation (1982), Family Bank and Trust Company (1985), Citytrust Banking Corporation (1996), Ayala Insurance Holdings Corporation (2000), Far East Bank and Trust Company (2000) and DBS Bank Philippines (2002).
...
BPI officially became an expanded commercial bank (universal bank) in 1982, and thus started engaging in non-allied undertakings.
In 2000, BPI became the first bancassurance firm in the Philippines, after it acquired the insurance companies of the Ayala Group. These companies (under the Ayala Insurance Holdings Corporation) were FGU Insurance Corporation, Universal Reinsurance Corporation, Ayala Life Assurance, Ayala Health Care and Ayala Plans. FGU Insurance was later merged with FEB Mitsui Marine Insurance Company and is now known as the BPI/MS Insurance Corporation.
Also in 2000, the bank introduced its internet bank, BPI Direct Savings Bank, which launched BPI into 21st century banking.
Today, BPI has maintained a leadership position in consumer banking, trust banking and asset management, corporate banking/corporate finance and bancassurance. With over 700 branches and around 1,100 automated teller machines, BPI boasts of having the largest combined network of branches/kiosk units and ATMs, servicing some 3 million depositors.
For years, international publications and rating agencies have given annual awards to BPI as one of the best banks in the region. Among these are the Far Eastern Economic Review, The Banker, Euromoney, Asiamoney, BusinessWeek, The Asset, Global Finance, Finance Asia, and The Asian Banker.
BPI has been consistently cited for its above-average profitability, sufficient capital/assets, low-cost funding base and manageable non-performing loan levels. Fitch Ratings noted that BPI has a comprehensive risk management which is superior to that of its peer banks, and this serves as an important element in keeping BPI better positioned in Philippine banking in the years ahead.

kirby21 January 26th, 2006, 09:27 AM Arroyo to inaugurate, turnover major pro-poor projects in Concepcion
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will turnover and inaugurate major pro-poor projects in the municipality of Concepcion, this Saturday, when she visits this town again for the third time, in three consecutive years.
Concepcion Mayor Dr. Raul Banias said the existence of these pro-poor projects in his municipality is proof of the local government unit's full support for the anti-poverty thrusts of PGMA.
President Arroyo will lead in the ceremonial inauguration and turnover of the Ajuy-Concepcion Road, Agnaga-Calamigan-ADB-ARC project 1, Agnaga-Calamigan-ADB-ARC project 2, Kalahi-Cidss-KKB (second cycle), and the Gawad-Kalinga Village Houses.
The Ajuy Concepcion Road is a 1-kilometer road serving as alternate route from Ajuy to Concepcion, without passing the town of Sara anymore. This is a concrete pavement completed in October 2005, with a budget of P10 million.
Mayor Banias said the Ajuy-Concepcion road is a legacy of former President Diosdado Macapagal, Arroyo's father, as part of the implementation of Emergency Employment Assistance Program.
The Agnaga-Calamigan ADB-ARC Project 1 is the concreting of Barangay Agnaga and Calamigan Farm-to Market road, costing about P13 million, completed in December 2005. Project 2 of the same is the concreting and rehabilitation of sitio 3, Agnaga and Sitio Liburon, Macalbang Farm-to-Market Road with overflow protect, which is targeted to be completed in April 2006, with a cost of more than P6.5 million. The President will lead in the groundbreaking ceremonies.
The Kalahi-Cidss-KKB (second cycle) sub-projects are located in eight barangays in Concepcion. The projects consist of post harvest facilities in Barangay Agnaga, Barangay Trail and Barangay Bagongon.
Day Care Center in Barangay Macatunao, Level II Water system in Barangay Maliog-Liog, Barangay Road Rehabilitation in Barangay Nino, Barangay Trail, Barangay Polopina.
Seawall in Barangay Salvacion and Barangay Road Rehabilitation, Barangay Tamis-ao. The project has a total cost of P10,361,753.99. The project gets 71.61 percent grant from the World Bank, while some 28.39 percent of it represents the community counterpart.
President Arroyo will also ceremonially turnover 29 Gawad Kalinga houses to beneficiaries in two villages located in Barangay Lo-ong and in Barangay Bacjawan Sur. Of the 29, 19 were constructed by donations coming from the President herself during her visit in 2004, while the rest were donated by other sponsors.
The Gawad Kalinga housing projects were implemented by the Couples for Christ Concepcion Chapter in partnership with the local government. The San Lorenzo Green Savers CMP-GK Village also helped in the construction of four houses.
After Concepcion, PGMA will proceed to Miagao, Guimbal and Central Philippine University in Iloilo.
She will attend the high mass before the Dinagyang Ati competition on January 29.

kirby21 January 26th, 2006, 09:41 AM What’s new in Oton
WHENEVER the town of Oton is mentioned, Ilonggos tend to associate it with antiquity or ancient history.
For Oton is really the oldest pueblo in Western Visayas organized by the Spanish colonizers. But even before the Spaniards came to Panay, Oton was already a thriving and prosperous community. It was already enjoying trade relations with many places in Southeast Asia including China.
Tradition had it that even Kalantiao, the leader of the Confederation of Madjaas based in Aklan, visited Oton and was impressed by the progress of the place and the prosperous lifestyle of the inhabitants. Men and women adorned their bodies with ornaments such as gold, carnelian, pearls and other precious jewels.
The same observation was made by Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa when he came to Oton in 1572. Peñalosa reported to King Philip of Spain “that the land is very fertile and the inhabitants are rich. The place abounds with food crops, fowls and madreñaque.”
Indeed, Oton became the most important community in Western Visayas for more than half a century. From 1572 to 1634, more than one half of Panay was known to map makers as “Provincia de Oton.”
Oton has continued to progress since it was made a pueblo 428 years ago. It is now the biggest town in terms of population in Panay. Its proximity to Iloilo City has made it an urbanized community. More than a dozen subdivisions have been set up by developers including a high enclosure seaside resort in the location of the once famous Anhawan Beach Resort.
The face of Oton is really changing very fast. The public market is a beehive of commercial activities where foodstuff are available at reasonable prices.
But what’s new in Oton these days?
The talk going around the town is that a new coffee shop will open before the end of the month -- to be exact on January 28 in the busy section of the public market. It will be called the BB Cafehaus and will serve the best native mountain coffee, the blend most Ilonggo coffee lovers prefer.
BB Cafehaus is the brainchild of retired Oton rural health physician, Dr. Bernardo Silla, the father of Board Member Bernardo “Idol” Silla, Jr. By putting up BB Cafehaus, Dr. Silla is out to prove there is still much life after retirement.
BB Cafehaus promises to be the Rialto of Oton where the latest gossips can be heard by its patrons. The coffee shop is a blend of rustic and modern setting, the ambience was so planned to make every patron feel relaxed as he sniffs at the enchanting aroma of newly brewed coffee.
BB Cafehaus is conveniently located at the alley fronting the fish section of the public market. At exactly eight o’clock in the morning of January 28, BB Cafehaus will open its door to all coffee lovers.
Those of your who hanker for coffee that is as pure an angel, black as the devil and hot as hell, your will surely find it at BB Cafehaus.
See your there on Friday at the Oton public market at eight o’clock in the morning, lets drinks coffee to our hearts’ delight. Let’s make it at BB Cafehaus.

hi lex. Nice meeting you all here online. I'm sort of collecting friends all along. lol. Have a nice day.
hehe ... but I beat you in posting it :D
lol. Not in the next time around. :)
ferrersky January 26th, 2006, 12:51 PM BTW, did you know that Ma'am Biyo is my teacher? Heheheheh!!! She's cool! You know what, she is proud of being a Filipino and at the same time an Ilonggo. She never misses to mention Iloilo, out of her some 30+ speeches here and abroad. I'm proud of her. She is telling the whole world that we, the Filipinos and in our case, Ilonggos can be made world-class.
Chic, I can't wait for the inaguration of the airport. Let's hope for its success. What if, someday, it will become the hub of the Philippine aviation, along with NAIA and MCIA. Our airport has the potential, considering that we are in the center of the Density, just located in the Heart of the country. Also, the OFWs, their families and some of our foreign friends can demand for a seasonal and possible chartered flights. Let us envision and dream higher, like this famous Ilongga teacher. But we just have to remember that we all Filipinos should be helping each other. Improvements may be many in Iloilo, but I believe this would also contribute to the region and country's success!!!

wecky January 26th, 2006, 07:02 PM What’s new in Oton
WHENEVER the town of Oton is mentioned, Ilonggos tend to associate it with antiquity or ancient history.
For Oton is really the oldest pueblo in Western Visayas organized by the Spanish colonizers. But even before the Spaniards came to Panay, Oton was already a thriving and prosperous community. It was already enjoying trade relations with many places in Southeast Asia including China.
......
More than a dozen subdivisions have been set up by developers including a high enclosure seaside resort in the location of the once famous Anhawan Beach Resort.
.....
The talk going around the town is that a new coffee shop will open before the end of the month -- to be exact on January 28 in the busy section of the public market. It will be called the BB Cafehaus and will serve the best native mountain coffee, the blend most Ilonggo coffee lovers prefer.

wecky January 26th, 2006, 08:28 PM SM City Iloilo celebrates Chinese New Year
SM City Iloilo welcomes the Year of the Dog with a big bang! Celebrate and be part of the festivities starting off with a Grand Fireworks Display at 12 Midnight on January 28, 2006 to usher in the New Year.
This will be followed by non- stop entertainment the following day, January 29 beginning with S.O.P. and S.O.P. Gigsters Live at the car park at 12 Noon! The show will feature guest artists like Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Karylle, KC Montero, Jonalyn Viray, Jacque Estevez, Rufa Mae Quinto, Dennis Trillo, Gabby Eigenmann, Aryana, Jennylyn
Mercado, LJ Reyes, Kyla, Bianca King, Jay- R and a lot more.
All these will not be complete without the spectacular Lion and Dragon Dance presentations at 4 PM by the Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School and by the Sun Yat Sen High School at 6:30 PM. There will also be wushu performances at the SM car park.
The Chinese consider the Dragons to be friendly and helpful creatures associated with strength, good fortune, wisdom and longevity. During the dance, the dragon catches money offered by the spectators. The bigger amount is usually held higher, but it is bad luck to hold the money out of reach.
This activity will soon be followed by the non stop fun and party in SM City's Food festival and Street party dubbed as "Dinagyang Party Overload" with Freestyle in their performance until 12 Midnight.
Special thanks to Philippine Airlines, San Miguel Corporation, Globe, Infocom, Breakthrough, Villa Regatta Restaurant , Butot Balat, Mang Inasal, Chowking, Max's Restaurant, Dunkin' Donuts, Casa Ilongga, Mister Donut, VJS Pro Audio Enterprise, and JLM Artshop.
KUNG HEI FAT CHOI! Long live and be merry!!!

wecky January 27th, 2006, 03:30 PM Dinagyang fluvial procession: A journey of faith received and shared
The fluvial procession is not only a highlight of the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival 2006 but also a journey of faith that was gifted to us and one that we share, not only here in the country but even abroad.
Fr. Roy Margallo, chair of the Dinagyang Liturgical Committee, said that the fluvial procession is meant to commemorate and appreciate in full measure the efforts of the Spanish friars who brought the Catholic faith in the country through the devotion to Sr. Sto. Nino.
Fr. Margallo said that all those joining the fluvial procession and the foot parade that follows should remember with gratitude the missionary spirit of the friars who risked their lives as they traveled through the rough seas, uncertain of their destinations and their fate.
"With their missionary spirit of bringing the faith in our seashores, our forefathers have benefited so much, and we are also being blessed until today," Fr. Margallo said.
He added that with that gift, the Filipinos today have become true missionaries as they make their presence felt anywhere in the world, giving back the faith, particularly in Europe, where it came from.
The fluvial parade in the Dinagyang is also a missionary journey for everybody, through the devotion to Sto. Nino, Fr. Margallo said.
This year's fluvial procession is on January 27, starting at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, with assembly point at Fort San Pedro Drive Inn. From there, the 30 decorated bancas will wind their way to the Customs House, where the participants will go on a foot procession, passing Iznart St., J.M. Basa St., to Plaza Libertad and back to San Jose Church.
Fr. Margallo said that those joining the fluvial procession and those along the route should bring or display their images of the St. Niño, with devotion and gratitude. (PIA6/ESSubong).
