Well, with nothing to do, I'll just post this:

Personal rankings of the six districts according to level of progress (based on observation)

1. City Proper
2. Jaro
3. Mandurriao
4. La Paz
5. Molo
6. Villa

In terms of having beautiful churches:
1. Molo
2. Jaro
3. Villa
4. City Proper
5. Mandurriao
6. La Paz

In terms of cleanliness
1. Villa
2. Mandurriao
3. Molo
4. La Paz
5. Jaro
6. City Proper

In terms of having the beautiful houses
1. Jaro (nothing beats the old majestic mansions like Nelly Garden, Angelicum, etc.)
2. Villa (I haven't been to the district for years up until just a few months back and I was stunned at so many changes. One of the most noticeable would be the newly sprouting mansions, which many overlook)
3. Molo (exclusive subdivision of Southvilles still captures my eyes)
4. Mandurriao (numerous houses are sprouting along Hibao-an
5. La Paz
6. City Proper (houses aren't really suggested for the city)

In terms of the most beautiful plaza
1. La Paz (Ramos' wife was Ilongga, which was a huge factor in making La Paz plaza, imo, the best plaza in the city...the only problem is the peace and security)
2. Jaro (though often times littered and crowded, the belfry and the size of the plaza makes it admirable)
3. City Proper (the plaza is the last place Spain officially surrendered to the Filipinos, making the plaza rich with history)
4. Molo (the trees in the plaza are so nice, plus having the church at the background makes it photogenic)
5. Villa (it's an okay place but the flowers are a nice attraction)
6. Mandurriao (recent renovations made it look nice, plus it was awarded Best District Plaza in the city last year)
thank you gid iloilocitykid.ako iya wala gid hinalong-ong sang progress sa city subong.i just rely on the pictures you posted.i know that we are starting to moving on after the catastophic typhoon frank hit our city.

^^ IMO, we should be veering away from the former title. To be honest with, we may never become what we were before. But of a different light, not a prisoner of the past us but we should be of a new us. The Queen who became a Commoner, a Commoner who became great again...it is up to us on how to lead the city and the province back to become of the country's economic powerhouse.

It may be a conditioning for motivation but we also have to think out of the box as well. Learn from her failures as a Queen, not live with it. That's why history is there.

I hope we shouldn't be haughty and instead acknowledge that we should work together and leave away the "rural-barriotic crab mentality" of ours in the trash bin.

A New Year deserves a bright new beginning! :)

I should quote Leoncio Deriada's work here. My 2 pesos worth. :2pesos:

this is just my opinion and i think i am entitled for that.If this was not in history book of Iloilo i would not cling on that.if you are trying to stay away from it then its your decision.nadala ka man kay Mr. Deriada.i know you've gone a long way on your study and all of this branding did not make good to us.just make it that way.
for me i work hard and I want all ilonggos to unite and i want to work for its development and success but you can't take away my opinion even if it is the most barriotic as you would think.
me and you is just one of the the repsentation of all the ilonggos. We are not the majority.you can say what point you view you want as long as you are not stepping others toes.
peace.
Happy new year!

^^ Opinion accepted and respected bro. No problem and I am not muffling you for I respect other people's idea as well, that is why I ended up my post with a "2 pesos worth" as a statement of opinion and not declaration. ;)

Anyway, its also my opinion to state otherwise. Because although I may have came a long way already but I wouldn't turn my back at Iloilo nor my promise to come back and serve her. The "barriotic crab mentality thingy" is different as it becomes a liability rather than an asset to the locality. That is already pulling down someone's shoes or stepping up someone's foot and I believe you are not doing that.

We have to work hard. Madamu pa ta kaunon nga bugas pero nagapati ko nga pwede kita maging binulawan liwat, sa lain nga pamaagi.

Regarding we as the second oldest city....basi magsaka kilay sang mga taga-Oton sina kay sila man ang primero nga pueblo sang isla sang Panay, hehehe!!!

Anyway, I think we officially became a city by 1890...same as Jaro (dang! I need to go back to the Archives and pay them the fee! Aargh!) I dunno if we are really the 2nd oldest city but we may speak as one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the archipelago, just to play safe.

Guimaras to vie for Dinagyang honor
By Lydia C. Pendon

JORDAN, Guimaras -- This island province is throwing its hat once again in next year's Dinagyang Festival tribes' competition slated on the fourth week of January 2009.

Guimaras Governor Felipe Hilan Nava said the province's participation is in response to the call of many sectors in his province, particularly the student populace, to participate in Iloilo City's foremost tourism festival.

Guimaras has been joining the Dinagyang ati-ati tribes' contest for several years but it eventually stopped joining the contest to concentrate in its own Mangahan Festival, a festival of mangoes, held every month of May.

Nava said their decision to join next year's contest was triggered by an offer of the owner of Mesa Drug Store to become their major sponsor.

The governor admitted that he was enthusiastic with the offer and readily gave his support to create a tribe whose members are students and out-of-school youth. The students of Sta. Theresa National High School will comprise majority of the tribe members.

Nava said the Guimaras tribe will be named Tribu Himal-us.

Since a newly formed group, like Tribu Hima-us, is not qualified to receive financial grants from the Dinagyang Foundation, Nava is confident that some local sponsors and the people of the island will fully support the tribe.

Tribu Himal-us is headed by JM Borbon as tribe leader together with two award-winning choreographers who will train the tribe members for coordinated dance movements and music.

Nava said he is positive that the Guimaras tribe will capture the hearts and imagination of foreign and domestic spectators who will come to Iloilo City to witness the grandest festival in the country.

The Province of Guimaras is also known for its yearly passion play "Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras" held during the Lenten season.

Dinagyang Festival is a grand slam winner of the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (Atop) as the country's top tourism event for the past three years.

Its probably that damn tail end of cold front again that is soaking the day again....:D

SM City commends honest personnel

TWO personnel of SM City mall in Mandurriao, Iloilo City proved that honesty is still the best policy.

Maintenance personnel Rey Farenas and SM Storyland cashier Janice Rizaldo received commendations from SM City mall management for returning an envelope full of money and a bag, respectively, which were left by mall customers in two separate occasions.

Farenas said that the first thing that entered his mind was to return the envelope to the owner.
“My first reaction was to pity the owner because I realized the importance of the money to whoever owns it,” he added.

Rizaldo, meanwhile, said that when she found the bag, she immediately turned it over to her brother who also works at SM City as a security guard so it can be properly endorsed and returned to the owner.

“I immediately told my superior about it so I can seek further help for the wallet to be returned,” said Rizaldo.

Farenas is under the ABLE Services Inc. while Rizaldo is with SM Storyland of SM City Iloilo.

Iloilo residents welcome New Year

By JOYCE CLAVECILLAS, ABS-CBN Iloilo | 01/01/2009 4:25 PM

Despite a continuous downpour of rain, Ilonggos welcomed New Year with celebrations.

A few minutes before midnight, residents went out of their houses to light different sorts of firecrackers.

Children enjoyed playing with lusis (sparklers). Some avoided firecrackers. They instead placed sound systems in their barangays and danced all night long.

Families gathered for the traditional Media Noche as they ate special dishes together.

Meanwhile, firecracker and fruit vendors were dismayed by the bad weather on New Year’s Eve. They were expecting buyers Wednesday night, but due to the rain, few people bought fruits and firecrackers.

Three incidents of stray bullets reportedly took place Wedensday night. Two persons were reported wounded in the incidents. They were Ray Ann Fernandez, 20 years old of Barangay Zamora and Joenil Abastillas, 37 years old of Bonifacio St., Arevalo in Iloilo City.

A slug of unknown caliber was found lodged inside the house of Alba family in Barangay South Fundidor Molo. Police were investigating as to who were responsible for the indiscriminate firing.

Iloilo firecracker industry down 40%
12/27/2008 | 06:12 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The pyrotechnics industry in Iloilo is feeling the economic pinch, experiencing a slowdown in production and sales by as much as 40 percent, an online news site reported.

The News Today reported that Danilo Gizon, president of the Arevalo Pyrotechnics Association, blamed the situation on the economic crisis.

"Firecracker production is down by 40% due to the crisis," he said.

Gizon said the pyrotechnics industry in Iloilo is hard-hit by the high cost and the scarcity of raw materials and a slump in the sales of their products.

He said they are also feeling the after effects of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, during which Chinese authorities banned the exportation of ingredients used to make firecrackers.

Gizon said that while they buy raw materials from local suppliers, the suppliers merely import ingredients, particularly potassium chlorate, from China.

It was only recently that their suppliers were able to import the necessary ingredients from China, he said.

"Before, we would start getting orders from our dealers in the towns and neighboring provinces as early as October," Gizon said.

Now, he said there is not much movement in the market now because people have less money to spend for firecrackers.

"Sales are weak, so production has also dwindled," he said.

He added they also had to find other sources of paper used in packing firecrackers.

Before, he said makers of firecrackers recycle the paper used in cement bags. But since cement makers are now using plastic sacks, we have to look for other sources.

"Now we are recycling the paper used to pack animal feeds," he said. - GMANews.TV

Regional panel to look into Iloilo water problem
01/02/2009 | 06:08 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The Regional Development Council (RDC) infrastructure committee has created a sub-committee to look into the water-supply problem in Iloilo City.

Online news site The News Today reported that Community and Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) chief Engr. Noel Hechanova will head the subcommittee.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, head of RDC's infrastructure committee, said the other member of the sub-committee is Bernabe Garnace of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The sub-committee was created even if the management of water utility Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) has already assured Treñas of the full resumption of water supply last Dec.

Water and electricity are among the basic needs considered by prospective investors in the city.

MIWD franchise areas, which include Iloilo City, are affected due to water scheduling being implemented for the past months.

The lack of water supply coming from the water district has been the subject of complaints from its thousands of consumers.

At first, MIWD management said the unclean water coming from the source up to its water catchments basin has affected the water supply in all the franchise areas.

MIWD has installed some 30,000 water connections in its franchise areas. The committee wants to know on how many water connections are installed in Iloilo City alone, said Treñas.

MIWD also supplies water in the city's neighboring towns of Sta.
Barbara, Cabatuan and Oton.

Hotels in General Luna, City Proper has to source out their water needs from other water delivery stations to address the needs of their guests.

Aside from the hotels, the most affected areas in the city that have poor water supply from the MIWD are the waterfront villages in the City Proper.

MIWD has to deliver two water tanks in waterfront villages such as Concepcion, Duran, and Sto. Rosario. - GMANews.TV

i think windows vista has this feature wherein you can connect your computer to your television and save the program you're watching!

heheh, just a hint for those who might have wild ideas of documenting 2009's dinagyang the underground way and share 'em to people the world over via "the web"...

happy new year everyone!

^^

Its actually not the OS (whether Vista, Xp, Linux or Mac). Its what we call "Slingbox". In my account (Dishnetwork) we have that... wherein you can watch the program that you have (based on your subscription package) thru your PC or Laptop or Smartphones... it requires a broadband service. Whatever package that you have you can watch including PPVs and it also has a "virtual remote"... it also works great If you are on vacation wherein you can watch your programming still thru your mobile phone or laptop. Similar with "LIVEDRIVE" wherein you can access you hard drive remotely. I tried this service wherein its for free (Beta Stage) since the bulk of my laptop Memory are MP3's and they're the first one to go If ever I will do a clean up. :)

For more info: http://www.slingmedia.com/

and this is Slingbox explained: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/slingbox.htm

On the other side maybe what you also mean is to "record" live TV thru your pc.... that works as well. Your PC can work as a DVR as well. :)

Typhoon Frank remains top story of 2008

sun star, iloilo

Saturday, January 03, 2009

By Lydia C. Pendon

THE multi-billion peso worth of devastation caused by Typhoon Frank last June 21-22, 2008 and its aftermath, including government's rehabilitation efforts, remain the top story in Iloilo province for 2008.

Other year-ender stories were about efforts to rehabilitate Panay Island provinces, prop up the local economy, and resuscitate the business climate reeling from the effects of the super typhoon that hit the island and the rest of Western Visayas.

On the other hand, despite the crisis caused by the global economic meltdown, Iloilo appears to be sustaining its development in 2009.

Iloilo Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. agree that the interests of the city and province should come first before political skirmishes. The two are at the forefront of rehabilitation efforts.

The National Government came to Iloilo’s rescue and provided P8 billion in rehabilitation fund for repair of infrastructure like roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, markets, and health centers, among others. The initial amount promised as Paglaum Fund was P15 billion.

Presidential Assistant Raul Banias of Task Force Panay said they are trying to fast track the release of the amount to take advantage of the good weather and start reconstruction efforts early this year.

Acknowledging that 2008 was a very challenging year, Treñas said 2009 may pose difficulties on the economic and social fronts because of the worldwide economic crisis.

Following Typhoon Frank’s devastation is the top story involving the construction of a P16 billion coal-fired power plant set to start early this year in Iloilo City after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) granted an environment compliance certificate to the project last September 2008.

The project, a sole private business initiative, is the first coal-fired power plant investment in Iloilo by Global Business Power Corporation and its affiliate Formosa Heavy Industries of Taiwan that aims to supply sustainable electric power to the city.

Another top story in 2008 is the multi-billion investments of Megaworld Corp. after it bought last year the 54-hectare lot of the old airport site in Mandurriao district.

Megaworld is set to convert the area into a new and modern commercial district complete with Internet and business process outsourcing technology, theme park, business offices, and other amenities.

Ayala Land Corp. is also eyeing to build another business and commercial area in the city and is expected to give more employment opportunities to the Ilonggos.

In the province of Iloilo, the top story remains the killing of Ajuy Vice Mayor Ramon Rojas allegedly masterminded by his own first cousin, businessman Vicente Espinosa. One suspect was killed while another suspect was arrested in Butuan by Iloilo policemen.

Business group refurbishes Rizal Shrine in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 3 (PNA) -– A newly-refurbished Rizal Shrine at the historic Plaza Libertad here was opened to the public recently as a fitting commemoration of the 112th anniversary of the martyrdom of the national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Great Pacific Life Insurance (Grepalife) of the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC) spearheaded the major facelift of the shrine in cooperation with the Iloilo City government, with the aim of making it as another major attraction of the city.

Plaza Libertad was the seat of the final collapse of the Spanish government in the hands of Ilonggo Libertador, Gen. Martin Delgado on Dec. 25, 1898 in Panay Island.

The city government has renovated the plaza, located in the heart of the city proper, with new painting of its railings and planted with ornamental plants and flowers to make it a major scenic rest area.

Grepalife spent P1 million for the shrine renovation with coats of paints, new light posts and spotlights for nighttime illumination, repainted and repaired gates and fences, and several decorative details like granite shafts to restore the national hero’s shrine to full glory.

Victor Quisumbing, Grepalife president and CEO, said the project aims to uplift the moral and societal fabric of the people and to spread positive influence to the city populace by leading “Buhay Rizal.”

Aside from Iloilo City, the YGC has also tapped the local governments in Baguio, Batangas and Davao to restore these cities’ Rizal Shrine, it was learned.(PNA)

YEARENDER:
Typhoon 'Frank' remains Iloilo's top story of 2008

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 3 (PNA) -– The multi-billion pesos worth of devastation caused by typhoon "Frank" last June 21-22, 2008 and its aftermath, including the government’s rehabilitation efforts, was the top story in Iloilo City and province for 2008.

Other top stories concerned the total effort to rehabilitate Panay Island provinces in order to prop up the local economy and resuscitate the business climate after reeling off from the effects of the super typhoon that hit Panay and the rest of Western Visayas.

On the other hand, despite the aftermath of the global economic meltdown, Iloilo is sustaining its development with positive signs in 2009.

City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and Iloilo Gov. Niel D. Tupas Sr. are one in saying the interest of the city and province should come first before political battles by being in the forefront in rehabilitation efforts.

The national government has come into the reconstruction efforts, and from the Php15-billion initially promised as rehabilitation Paglaum Fund, the amount was scaled down to Php8 billion to spend for the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in infrastructures such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, markets, health centers and other agricultural facilities.

Presidential Assistant Raul Banias of Task Force Panay said they are trying to fast-track the release of the amount early this year so as to take opportunity of good weather in the rehabilitation activities.

Acknowledging that 2008 was a very challenging year, Treñas said that 2009 might pose difficulties in the total economic and social condition of the city and the whole region brought about by worldwide economic crisis.

Following typhoon Frank's devastation as the top story was the construction of a Php16-billion coal-fired power plant set to start early this year in Iloilo City after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) granted an environment compliance certificate to the project last September 2008.

The project, a sole private business initiative, is the first coal-fired power plant investment in this city by Global Business Power Corporation and its affiliate Formosa Heavy Industries of Taiwan that aims to supply sustainable electric power to the city.

Another top story in 2008 was the multi-billion-peso investments of Megaworld Corp. after it bought last year the 54-hectare lot of the old airport site in Mandurriao district.

Megaworld is set to convert the area into a new and modern commercial district complete with internet technology and business process outsourcing, theme park, business offices and other amenities.

Ayala Land Corp. is also planning to build another business and commercial area, which is expected to give more employment opportunities to the Ilonggos.

In the province of Iloilo, the top story was the killing of Ajuy Vice Mayor Ramon Rojas, involving his own first cousin, businessman Vicente Espinosa. (PNA)

Grand musical production
to cap Dinagyang 2009

ILOILO City – A visual and auditory spectacle will be held during the awarding ceremony for the winners of the Dinagyang Festival on January 25 at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.’s (PAGCOR) grand production, “Wanders,” is a unique musical production that mixes the elements of theater, concert, circus and dance. It top bills the country’s best homegrown talents in entertainment.

A fusion of cultures, the show also highlights gravity-defying aerial acrobatics and stunning displays of skills by flamboyant performers from China and Russia.

“For the first time, this extravaganza will be ‘exported’ out of the stage of PAGCOR in Parañaque to the sports complex of Iloilo,” said City Tourism Officer Benito Jimena.
“Wanders” is PAGCOR's foray into world-class family-oriented entertainment to promote the tourism industry.

PAGCOR is set to give a donation, too, to the festival, with the Department of Tourism processing the said assistance.

“Wanders” is PAGCOR’s “gift” to the Ilonggos and its contribution to the celebration of Dinagyang, Jimena said. (PNA)

Defensor-Garin tandem up for Iloilo?
By Florence F. Hibionada

It is never too early to talk politics. Or so it seems as the holiday break was marked by talks of a Capitol comeback for one of Iloilo's highly-respected public official.

While at it, a "dream tandem" too on what has been floated as "almost done deal" for yet another respected and recognized 'power politician.'

The purported comeback is for former Iloilo Governor and now Third District Congressman Arthur Defensor Sr., House Majority Floor Leader of the 14th Congress. The purported tandem is with First District Board Member Richard Garin, son of power couple, Philippine Coconut Authority Administrator Oscar and San Joaquin Mayor Ninfa Garin.

Defensor Sr.'s 'declaration' was heard over Bombo Radyo as he expressed "interest" in going back to the Capitol. He said foremost of his consideration in seriously eyeing his former post was the heightened clamor of the people for change in the Iloilo Provincial Government.

Defensor Sr. also said that for change to happen here, an end for "pinamilya-type" of governance must be stopped.

And with his "interest" made public, Defensor Sr. named Garin as possible partner and vice-gubernatorial bet.

Garin when reached by The News Today (TNT) was upfront with his answer...cont'd.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2008/12/29/defensor.garin.tandem.up.for.iloilo.html

^^an end to the nepotism-laced governance in iloilo? will soon see.
