that's a good news ... Ilonggo graduates will be very happy with the coming of all these call centers in our city/province. I hope more and more call centers will relocate in Iloilo. Cheers ! This will be the fourth one kung matabo no?

definitely a good news for all Ilonggos. More call centers, better employment for our friends and brothers their in Iloilo. Hope more and more call centers will relocate in our province. And I'm glad, it's the fourth one already. Mind you, we have abundant supply of graduates in the city and province. Human Resources in Iloilo is on its peak. Goodluck !

another new sporting event for Ilonggos ... hehehe .. let the fight begins ! :)

that's right. But I still lobby for a FOOTBALL Stadium like what we have here in UK and Europe.

Football Season .. Welcome to the FOOTBALL CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES ... again, Go Team ILOILO !

Go, go, go ILOILO ! Paging TUPAS ! After Iloilo Convention Center, can we have a Football Stadium as the next project? And please, let is be in Sta Barbara or Barotac Nuevo towns. Cheers !

Fer, ma-butt-in lang ako .. although this was address kay @mars ... hehehe ... I like the list of your feasibility study ... sa Convention Center mas mahapos coz made-up na ang effect niya .. mas madali mag-formulate conclusion or analysis ... siguro, I suggest nga Railway system connecting these towns ang mas maayo coz we need to know kung ano ang mangin effect pa niya sa pumuluyo sang Iloilo ... whether this one is advantageous gid man and kung ang target market niya is possible and sustainable.

if I'll be asked, I'll go for all of them. lol. Fer, I think Iloilo International Airport is the best area for a feasibility study (my opinion). :)

good news sa mga supporters sang SM ... hehehe ... not a bad idea though .. we already had three going four na ... and with three of them are planning for further expansion pa. We'll see how it goes na lang. :)

This time, SM will be singing "We Are The Champion, My Friend". lol. Too many SMs for Iloilo now and still growing? Nobody can stopped our beloved businessman Weck, Mr Henry Sy. :)

ako rin .. hahabol din ... kadasig sang postings ... or maybe just me taking my time lately ... pati news, indi na ako ka post kay naunahan ko nila ... hehehe.

"catch me (us) if you can" !

Hope all of us will have to focus on that vision...I am seeing that as of now, we are somewhere between step 2-5 of that roadmap. Long way to go pa, pero kaya naton ina ah...

That vision drives one here really crazy. But Freeze, I think all Ilonggos are sharing Trenas vision, too. A really progressive Iloilo. Cheers to all Ilonggos ! :)

I hope to see some Paraw Regatta pics!!
I've visited Passi a couple of years ago daw gutok na gid. I went to school there for 2 years. I've also visited Balasan, Carles, and Estancia. Now these places have remained unchanged since the 70s, kuno. But that's how I like it and sometimes it's better that way.

hello Berlin. It's my first time to see you here in our thread. Come and visit us often. We loved to hear news about Iloilo and Ilonggos around the world. Let's share our ideas, vision, etc for our beloved province.

Passi City at present is doing great. Their economy is not as dynamic as Iloilo City but they are slowly making their own feat well. Few new businesses started to relocate in Passi City recently including the upcoming Chan's Sugar Central.

DEVELOP METRO ILOILO...1st priority sana yung road network (pls lang, highway at hindi 1 lane road ang i-build nila)

Imo ina gali photo Weck? Medyo blurred haw?

Yes. Man ko nga wala kami obrahon kagab-i ni mars, di PM-Pm kami di ... and I emailed her some photos I've taken last September. I don't know why it's so blurry and dark. Something is wrong with my digital ... sa screen niya, the picture looked bright and alive .. pagsulod ko na sa photobucket, nagdulom gulpi ... hehehe .. it's so frustrating, mate ... better next time na naman eh ... hehehe.

ang dami namang Falls na naka-list ... sana makapunta nang Ajuy .. thanks for posting info/article about the place, Lewdsaint. I haven't been to Ajuy (literally) yet or probably seen the town in passing lang on my way to visit other Northern towns of Iloilo. I've been to Sara and Concepcion towns for their fiestas ... na-miss ko tuloy ang fiesta-fiesta na to ... hihihi. Siguro gutom lang ako. Again, salamat nga dako.

@Mars ... it's time for you to visit Ajuy then. 'kala mo siguro Ajuy is so rural ... ayan, ang rural may tinatagong ganda. Iloilo's Northern towns are really untapped when it comes to tourism and other developments. Actually, they can start developing Estancia kasi Estancia has its own port and there are direct trip from Manila to Estancia and vice versa .. same true with Estancia and few Mindanao provinces.

para makahabol sa demand...sana our schools and universities should raise higher pa yung standards nila sa english esp sa speaking and communication na part.

I guess so. Maybe we could start twisting our toungues. In terms of verbal communication, Ilonggo graduates are on my top list. I'm really sure of this one.

hehe...let's not stop asking for more projects....kung madali na lang matapos ang isa, start na kaagad ang isa...dba...

I'm only paging TUPAS, and not GMA. lol. If I'll call GMA for help, mas malaking project lalo ang hihingin ko. :) . But really, I'm glad Tupas is doing his job well. Somehow or one way or the other, we didn't like him .. but hey, he's trying. Let's give the old man a good benefit of doubt. :)

DEVELOP METRO ILOILO...1st priority sana yung road network (pls lang, highway at hindi 1 lane road ang i-build nila)

I agree. Metro Iloilo and not Iloilo City alone. The city is too congested already. Let's give some developments to nearby towns, too.

malakas lang kita siguro sa kay Sy ah...or pala-shopping lang gid kita ya siguro....

Sy loved Iloilo since then .. and we loved him, too. That's why, when it comes to shopping, Iloilo shops in SM. :) .

count me in too ... proud to be an Ilonggo .. as always.

you're in, and your number 200 na. lol. Yesterday Mars told me, she is going to post Ilonggo ambahanon here in forum. I'm sure makanta naman ina lalala diri. :)

NO to gambling and definitely NOT for ILOILO. Kudos to Gov Tupas ! Keep it up !

absolutely ! definitely !

Agree. Let's maintain our positive budget. For the last 2-3 years we managed to save millions sa coffer sang aton probinsiya ... tani this year, maka-save na naman kita. Mas madasig maghulag kung wala kita iya utang sa iban nga international agencies. Or else we'll paying with dollars and kung matabo ini, mahina ang pag-uswag snag aton ekonomiya sa probinsiya.

More to our economy ... wala utang !

Okay, Lewdsaint. We'll do that. Kay lately daw nag-focus lang kita sa ciudad naton ... hopefully, we can monitor man sang mga projects nga nagakatabo sa palibot sang aton probinsiya.

I tried but I don't know how to locate websites of different towns. My vision is blurry, too, with all this googling phenomena. :)

Go Aklan and Boracay. I believed that may plan to make Caticlan Airport as an International Airport ... wow .. maayo gid ini. Kung matabo, there will be two international airports in Panay Island .. besides, iba man ang market sang Boracay, iba man sa aton sa Iloilo. Very amenable gid ako sa bagay nga ini. More projects in Panay, the better ..biskan pa ina nga probinsiya .. and guys, don't forget our beloved Guimaras ... :)

Gov Miraflores, you're great ! Make Caticlan Airport as International Airport, too ! Go Western Visayas !

a thing to look forward for ... a vision, a dream ... let's help make it a reality. :)

"I do". :)

Just wanna share a panorama pic of the Jaro Cathedral in Jaro, Iloilo.
Notes its raining heavily outside so I decided to stay a little longer
and then took this pic. The cathedral was built in 1864.
Pope John Paul II visited this church and conducted a mass here in 1982.

Thanks for sharing, Virtute. It's my church and I'm proud of it. Sarado Katoliko ko nga daan iya. lol.

Santa Barbara Church and Convent. An imposing edifice of Baroque Renaissance architecture, it was built in 1845 and was finished 33 years later. It was made the headquarters of the Ejercito Libertador during the revolution against Span in the Visayas in 1898. In 1991, the National Historical Institute declared it as a national historical landmark.

Cry of Santa Barbara Marker. This historical marker lies in the same site where the Philippine flag was first raised outside Luzon, the event popularly know as the "Cry of Santa Barbara" which took place in November 17, 1898. It stands as a living witness of Visayan gallantry and heroism during the dark ages of the revolution against Spanish tyranny and oppression.

Carved on a 35-hectare area of plain and rolling hills, the view is panoramic, embellished by nature. This playground is the only one of its kind in Panay Island and is the oldest in Asia. Built in 1907 by a group of Scots, English and American expatriates, local as well as national tournaments are often held here.

Monument of Gen. Martin T. Delgado. Found in the northwestern entrance of the town plaza and facing the municipal building stands the statue in bronze of the town's most distinguished son, Gen. Santa Barbara Cemetery. Considered a hallowed ground, the Roman Catholic Cemetery is one of the oldest landmarks in the town located at Sitio Anggasan, Barangay Duyanduyan. Its facade bears the mark of Spanish influence in the country. It was constructed in1845 and was also one of the strongest structures built during the Spanish time that has survived earthquakes.

Victory Plaza and Municipal Bandstand. The town plaza, with its beautiful landscape, is a sight to behold. It is a favorite rendezvous of both the young and the old especially in the afternoon and evening. The bandstand is a circular structure that was constructed in 1925. It has served as a stage for band and musicians, political rallies, religious programs as well as cultural shows and contests since the American era.

Santa Barbara Irrigation Dam. Not more than a kilometer from the poblacion is the Santa Barbara Irrigation Dam. Completed in 1926, this massive structure is the first gravity irrigation system in the Visayas that has revolutionized farming in Iloilo.

@Chymera ... here's a part of an article about the airport opening:

Slippage

Meanwhile, Tupas told the Iloilo Capitol Press Corps Tuesday that the new airport project only has 22 percent slippage.

Tupas added that in accordance with their agreement with the contractor, the new airport should be completed in October this year.

"They asked that the timetable be extended to March next year but it was not approved yet so October this year remains the deadline," Tupas said.

here's the link:
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ilo/2006/02/18/news/committee.terminates.probe.on.airport.anomalies..html

...

so awaiting further infos pa regarding the New Iloilo Airport ... hope the airport will be operational this year na .. cheers !

wowoweee. Six universities in a relatively small city. hmmm. And to think that there are few more colleges in town with pending application in CHED. Impressive, isn't it?

Football addict .... hehehe ... it's Liverpool vs Man U today ... I'm sure, nakababad ka na sa tele ... day off mo ngayon?

Tupas should start listening to us Ilonggos. He should put our interest first more than anything else, including his own. Now, it'll be his problem kung indi niya ma-cope-up-an ang paging ko di. Football Stadium? It's just a wishy-wishy thing. I don't want Iloilo to spend billions of pesos for a stadium right now. Maybe later. :)

all topics are good and interesting.

that's right. Fer, share with us sang results ha?

The Tigbauan Main Station in Tigbauan, Iloilo is the SEAFDEC/AQD headquarters situated right on the beach on the south coast of Panay Island. The 40-hectare complex includes various research laboratories, hatcheries and brood-stock tanks for experiments in artificial propagation, feed development and health management.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/photo11.jpg

TMS also houses the training facilities, library, museum, administration offices, and a medical clinic. On-campus housing, cafeteria, and recreational facilities cater to resident staff, trainees, guests and visiting researchers.

TMS maintains six service laboratories to serve the research staff in their requirements for laboratory analyses of research samples and other materials. Other clientele served by the service laboratories include the private sector and some government institutions that are charged at cost. These facilities also provide the laboratories for various training activities.

Ok lang na, Kirb. Abi mo ikaw lang? It's also my chance. Chymera busy man sa iya nga site...hehehe! Chance na naton ini...hehehe!
btw, may PM ako sa imo about an American diplomat who visited our place with his family.
Amo 'ni hambal nya na nagustuhan ko : "One thing that immediately comes to mind when driving through cities OTHER than Manila is that the world really CAN be clean! Iloilo was decked out for the celebration and looked great but mostly I noticed the smell of flowers, clean breezes and a really vivid blue sky. Anyone who is reading this from someone other than here (and I suppose Mexico City) should stop for a moment and take a deep breath. I’m jealous of you. :>).......the best food I’ve eaten since arriving in the Philippines if not ever. Some say the good people of Cebu are masters of “lechon”, a form of roasted pig. Well, I suspect that they have spies come to Iloilo to steal the lechon here. I have never tasted a more wonderful thing in a long time. The taste just pours through you. 2005 DINAGYANG THEMESONG

Intro...

(turagsoy... turagsoy... turagsoy...)

Sadtong nahauna nga istorya kag panahon
Nakilala ka sa ngalan nga Irong-irong
Puno sang manggad kag sang katahum
Sa idalum ni Datu Paiburong.

Ipabugal ko ang imo ngalan
Ipabugal ko ang mga binuhatan
Sang imong ginikanan kag imong kabataan
Gabuligay pakadto sa kauswagan.

Chorus:

Hala Bira ILOILO! Sulong sa pagbag-o!
Hala Bira ILOILO! Matahum nga banwa ko!
Hala Bira ILOILO! Ipabugal ang ngalan mo!
Sa tanan nga panahon ikaw ang palanggaon!

Sa paglakat sang malawig nga tinion
Nakilala ka sa madamong bulohaton
Ang imo nga DINAGYANG kag imo nga KASADYAHAN
Padayon nga ginapasidunggan!

Himuon ko ang tanan nga masarangan
Isinggit ko sa bilog nga kalibutan
Kita mga ILONGGO tunay nga PILIPINO
Mapisan kag dungganon nga mga tawo!

REPEAT CHORUS 2x

Hala Bira ILOILO! Negosyo kag probinsya!
Hala Bira ILOILO! Napun-an ka sang kasadya!
Hala Bira ILOILO! Itib-ong ang kalinungan!
Hala Bira ILOILO! Padayon sa kauswagan!

REPEAT CHORUS 2x

Hala Bira ILOILO! VIVA SENYOR SANTO NINO!
Hala DAGYANG ILOILO! VIVA SENYOR SANTO NINO!
Hala DAGYANG ILOILO! VIVA SENYOR SANTO NINO!

These facilities also provide the laboratories for various training activities.

btw, may PM ako sa imo about an American diplomat who visited our place with his family.
There was so much good food while I was there but the lechon is beyond good. My apologies to the “pancit molo” (which originated in Iloilo), which was also great."

Amo man 'ni hambal nya sa dinagyang : "I wish you could have heard the drums. Imagine the dancers and about 50 drums making the ground beneath you shake. I don't use this word often but it was indeed "breathtaking". "

Thanks for fowarding those two websites. I'm glad he (the American) likes Iloilo so much. Again, Iloilo has so much to offer other than food, beach and business. :)

BIR: Please cooperate with our tax collection campaign
By Ruby P. Silubrico

TWO high-ranking officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) here are appealing to the taxpayers to cooperate in their tax collection campaign.

They also warned businessmen not to take advantage of the 12 percent expanded Value Added Tax (VAT).

"Stampede comments". Post your comments on the Manila stampede incident here.

Jona Ruth Alonte, district revenue officer (RDO) said she hopes everyone will help each other in collecting tax for the development of the country's economy.

"We really need expanded VAT. Every single centavo you pay is a big help to our tax collection campaign," Alonte said.

Alonte also asked the cooperation of the businessmen not take advantage of the two percent increase. Included in the warning were doctors and lawyers.

She emphasized that doctors and lawyers with less than P1.5 million revenues or earnings per year are not allowed to increase their services.

It was learned that 86 percent of the government revenues would go to the payments of the government's debts. Thus, in order to address the country's fiscal problem, another two percent was added, thus the 12 percent expanded VAT.

Alonte said that in Iloilo City alone, the tax revenue target is at P3 billion.

Not anti-poor

Meanwhile, BIR Regional Director Rudita Galanto reiterated that the expanded VAT is not anti poor but instead it recognizes the needs of the poor and exempts basic commodities. These are agriculture and marine products in their original state such as vegetables meat, fish, fruits, eggs and rice, educational services rendered by both public and private educational institutions, books, newspapers and magazines.

Lease of residential houses not exceeding P10,000 monthly, sale of low-cost house and lot not exceeding P2.5 million, sales of persons and establishments earning not more than P1.5 million per year that include sari-sari stores and street vendors are also exempted.

Goods and services that are subject for expanded VAT are coal, natural gas and other indigenous fuels, petroleum products and their raw materials, power/electric cooperatives, domestic transport of passengers by air and sea, medical services, legal services, cotton and cotton seeds, non-food agricultural products, works of art, literary works, and musical composition.

Register

Galanto added that every person, who in the course of trade or business, sells, barters or exchanges goods or properties, or engages in the sale or exchange of goods, services subject to VAT, shall be liable to register for VAT if gross sales or gross receipts for the past 12 months have exceeded to P1.5 million.

Galanto added that there's a need to increase the VAT from 10 to 12 percent as part of a bigger effort to address the country's budget deficit.

"We need to increase our tax collection to sustain the government's delivery of basic services. While we can conceptually reduce government expenditures, we can only reduce it because the public relies on government for these basic services, which includes education and medical services," she stressed.

BIR optimistic of increased revenues under new EVAT

Iloilo City (17 February) -- Revenue District Officer Jona Ruth Alonte of Revenue District No. 74 of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) based here in this city is optimistic that the implementation of the new Expanded Value Added Tax (EVAT) will have a great impact in their tax collection efforts this year.

In an interview with the Philippine Information Agency, Alonte said with the strengthened EVAT implementation their target goal collection for the month of January was increased to 36 percent, from P162.5 million last year to P216.5 million this year and basing from their latest statistics they have already collected P229 million, exceeding their target for the month.

She also revealed that their target goal collection for 2006 has been increased by P1 billion that is from P2.4 billion last year to P3.4 billion.

"With the implementation of the Lateral Law we will implement appropriate strategies to enhance our tax collection efforts to make sure that no one in my district will be affected by the law', Alonte said.

R.A. 9335, the Lateral Attrition Law aims to improve the revenue collection performance of BIR and BoC by putting in place a system of rewards, incentives and sanctions through the creation of a rewards and incentives fund as well as revenue performance evaluation board. It took effect January 1 of this year.

Meanwhile, Alonte said the increase in their tax collection efficiency in January means business in this city has remained unaffected by the implementation of the expanded value added tax contrary, it has flourished.

With the implementation of the new EVAT the government would be able to provide more funds to the problems of: lack of classrooms, demand for better health and other social services facilities, and for the construction of priority infrastructure facilities needed to make the country's economy more competitive.

Alonte also cautioned businessmen not to take advantage of the situation by unjustifiably increasing the prices of their goods or merchandize.

Likewise, she urged the public to demand for a receipt every time they make a purchase.

"For goods you buy, please demand a receipt because this is one way that the BIR can monitor trade malpractices," she said. (PIA) [top]

:eek2: It's quite a big amount ! Although the city economy is on its upswing trend, I guess the target revenue is very high. Unless they'll monitor every bits and pieces of all businesses around Iloilo, a 3 billion tax revenue will definitely be attained.

Iloilo SMEs to participate in corporate social responsibility forum

As the country's fiscal deficit widens, it becomes increasingly difficult for the Philippine government to provide basic social services to its population. It also raises issues of equity and access to resources and the ability of the government to meet and achieve its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It is in this sense that SMEs can play a significant role towards creating an enabling environment for the government to meet its MDG's obligations. Using the CSR strategies for engagement, SME's have the potential to improve sustainable development initiatives, enhance the competitiveness of regional centers to compete for foreign direct investment and improve poverty-focused delivery of basic social services.

The two-day activity, dubbed as "A Conference/Workshop on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Strategies to Create Business and Social Value for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)", is a project of the British Embassy of Manila and the University of Asia and the Pacific in cooperation with the Iloilo Business Club, Inc., which is aimed to empower small and medium enterprises to embark on this new development challenge. Slated to be on February 21-22, 2006 at Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, this conference workshop will involve the members from the Iloilo Business Club, and representatives from the local government, national government agencies and other business associations.

Iloilo City is just one of the cities the country that the University of Asia and the Paciifc and the British Embassy of Manila has chosen to become a pilot area for this study

Display of beautifully-designed sailboats, fishing tournaments, oyster feasts, beach volleyball competitions and lots of exciting activities comprise this year's celebration of the 34th Paraw Regatta, an event which Ilonggos look forward to every year. But what is an event without a beauty pageant?

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/cherrymaecar1.jpg

On February 16, 2006 at exactly 4:00 p.m., the entertainment center of SM City Iloilo was filled with interested and spirited audience from all over and outside Iloilo City to witness twelve candidates from different schools vye for the title of this year's Miss Paraw Regatta.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/cherrymaecar2.jpg

Over-all Coordinator Ronnie Bolivar stated that the pageant aims to showcase the beauty of an Ilongga and the titlist 's responsibility is to bring pride to every Ilonggo. The contest commenced with a welcome address from the executive assistant to the mayor, Mr. Francis Cruz. Hosts Diego Mambo and Joan of GMA's local Sunday show Bongga presented the candidates. They all looked captivating in their sarongs during a sultry production number with the Tribal Quest Dancers. The contestants flaunted their curves as they dominated the center stage in their swimsuits and evening gowns.

Miag-ao to join Dinagyang next year
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao

AFTER a successful tribe competition in Miag-ao during its Salakayan Festival last February 4 Mayor Gerardo Flores told the media they are ready to join Iloilo City's Dinagyang Festival next year.

Flores said that the performances of the six tribes that joined the competition were very competitive making them qualified to compete with other municipal tribes in the Dinagyang Festival.

The Salakayan tribe competition depicted the history of Miag-ao.

Flores said that in that case, the municipal tribe will be joining the Kasadyahan competition during the Dinagyang Festival.

The contest catered to the six tribes with warriors and drummers from Miag-ao High Schools.

Among the tribes were Tribu Kabugwason of Miag-ao National High School, Tribu Wari wari of Kirayan National High School, Tribu Tabun-ak of Palaca National High School, Tribu Bantala-an of San Rafael National High School, Tribu Hugpong of St. Louis de Marillac and Tribu Salagyawan of Alejandro Firmeza Memorial National High School.

Flores said he will decide whether to combine the tribe's performers with other good performers of another to represent the municipality during the Kasadyahan or to chose one of the tribes instead.

Flores revealed that the Municipal Government provided not less than P50,000 subsidy.

The contest was the highlight of the festival.

The competition has instilled to the Miagaowanons the importance of preserving history and remembering history but was also very useful in promoting the municipality's products as the tribes used hablon, patadyong and kawayan-made (bamboo-made) products as part of the presentation's criteria.

Flores said hablon and patadyong are their place's most popular products.

The great performances of the tribes also resulted to balikbayan visits resulting to more economic aids.

"We've had more Miag-ao balikbayans who had yearned to go back here every festival."

He said these people have built houses and donated to the church here which are big help to the place's economy.

Flores added that the festival helps in the tourism.

With these, they have nothing more to do but make it better every year he said.

Ro-ro industry gets bigger: tourism
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao

ILOILO CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's project, the "Strong Republic Nautical Highway", roll on-roll off (ro-ro) industry is getting bigger, said the Department of Tourism (DOT) sub-committee on tourism (Scot) members.

The Scot was recently formed. This consists of 25 government agencies, which aims to familiarize the offices of tourist destinations in the country and help in making sure that it is easily accessed to, safe and well equipped with survival mechanisms.

DOT Security and Political Affairs Undersecretary Salvador Sarabia Jr. led the nautical trip of the Scot members using the ro-ro Friday. They came to Iloilo Saturday night. The trip ran to more than 20 hours.

The ro-ro trip rolled off from Puerto Galera to Roxas, and from Mindoro to Caticlan.

In the launching of the Scot last Saturday at the Iloilo Business Hotel, Sarabia told the media that though there were some facilities in the ship which needs improvement like the restrooms which appeared to have un-maintained cleanliness and unpleasant highways which cause the delay in traveling, nevertheless he said, the ro-ro is still getting big as an industry.

A member of the Scot said that it could be observed that there were now five bus lines, which ventured for servicing the ro-ro passengers when there were only two before.

Among them were Bachelor Express and Philtranco before and Alps, Gasat and Dimple Star now.

"It is evident that there is an existing confidence in the ro-ro industry," he said.

Also, one of the concerns raised by Salvador was the lack of fast crafts or more investors for the shipping industry to service ro-ro passengers.

So far, there were only shipping lines that the ro-ro have. These were Montenegro and Starlight shipping companies, which have two sea crafts each that give service to ro-ro.

The ro-ro was established three years ago. It aimed to make transfer of goods and services from far-flung provinces will be made faster and cheaper among other means of nautical travel.

What was observed during the travel will be made with recommendations and will be presented to Arroyo on Feb. 24, 2006 where Sarabia and other members of the Scot and leaders of the local government units (LGUs) will meet.

The Scot is led by Philippine National Police Chief Arturo Lomibao, chairman while government agencies like the PNP, Land Transportation Office (LTO), Air Transportation Office (ATO), Overseas Workers Welfare Agency (Owwa), Marina, (Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), Civil Aeronautics Board, Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Philippine Coastguard among others are members.

Sarabia said the next leg will be from Cebu to Bohol to Siquijor.

Lew, you missed the house of Mang Inasal's owner in Puerto Real ... I've seen it once sang naglabay kami .. massive and really beautiful. I wish, I wish :) .

Do you have Savannah Crest model house pic/s? Ganda .. halfly castle ang design with swimming pool in every house ... someone told me nga ara na gina-display ang model/miniature sa SM City. Savannah Crest is the newest community in Savannah. Probably the elitist of all.

Ledesco Village , Iloilo City

Considered as the “Forbes Park of Iloilo City”, Ledesco Village is the banner subdivision project of Ledesco Development Corporation. The one hundred twenty (120) hectare property was the FIRST first class subdivision in in Iloilo targeted for the mid to high-income property clientele.

A pioneer in the real estate business, Ledesco Development Corporation is among the first developers to establish prime middle to high income subdivision and resort-oriented properties that includes:

Still is the Forbes of Iloilo City. I liked Ledesco Village though. I never knew that the property is 120 hectares. Wow, it's huge. Btw, how many hectares is Savannah? Anybody knows? The only community in Savannah that I knew of in terms of land area is Savannah Glen. It's 50-hectare piece of property. I guess Savannah Trails is a lot bigger than Glen whilst the Glades is the smallest. Regarding Savannah Crest, I have no idea at all.

Among them were Bachelor Express and Philtranco before and Alps, Gasat and Dimple Star now.

.....

Capitol to convene for La Niña preparedness
By Ian C. Espada

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/02/20/gov.boy.mejo.jpg
Gov. Tupas briefs the media of the
provincial government's plan regarding
La Niña phenomenon. With him is
Provincial Administrator Manuel Mejorada.

The Iloilo provincial government through the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Council will convene this week to plan about contingency measures should La Niña hit the Province of Iloilo this year.

Experts from Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) will be invited to talk about the impact of the phenomenon and ways to counter or cushion its adverse effect to the people and environment.

If La Niña is inevitable, Gov. Niel D. Tupas, Sr. advice the farmers to veer away from planting crops that do not need much water such as melon, watermelon and mongo, among many others.

The province will also launch an advocacy campaign to let the people be aware and understand the La Niña phenomenon.

The governor, however, noted that according to weather experts, Iloilo would only experience soft impact of the phenomenon.

Considered potentially disastrous, La Niña is a climate phenomenon opposite to El Niño and associated with excessive rainfall and devastating floods. La Niña, also called El Viejo or matured El Niño ushers higher occurrence of cloudiness and rains over the warm waters off the Western Pacific including the Philippines.

Tupas also called for the support of other government agencies to heighten their contingency plans in case typhoons and floods especially in traditionally vulnerable agriculture-producing and flood-prone towns in the province.

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloLocation.jpg

Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/visayasaerial.jpg

Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloBannerMalls.jpg

Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/RomanCatholicChurches.jpg

Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.

Iloilo province is primarily the commercial and trade center of Western Visayas, with commercial, industrial development and rural banks, financial and investment houses, insurance companies, and realestate agencies and developers. Nevertheless, agriculture is the province's main source of livelihood. In fact, Iloilo's production of rice, sugar and mango has made it one of the country's top agricultural producers.

http://static.flickr.com/25/93600246_b6b952a8c8.jpg?v=0

The city's population represents a big manpower pool and a growing consumer market. Purchasing power is generally high given the favorable income distribution in Iloilo. Assuring the business sector of a steady supply of multi-skilled manpower are the city's 30 tertiary schools and 6 universities.

Iloilo's is a byword for its famous festival - the Dinagyang, a local mardigras. Held every January in honor of the Infant Jesus, the festival is a major tourist attraction.

Another even Iloilo is known for is the Paraw Regatta. Which is participated in by local and foreign sportsmen.

New Iloilo Airport Development Project (P6.2B)
Proposed Completion - October 2006

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3423/1224/320/airport1.jpg

The new Iloilo Airport, located 19 kilometers north of Iloilo City, will be a domestic trunkline airport of international standards located at the Sta. Barbara-Cabatuan site and will replace the existing airport in Manduriao. Its development project will cover the acquisition of 200 hectares of land. The scope of work includes the 2,500 m x 45 meters runway, 48,000 sq. meters apron, 3,000 m x 30 meters access road, passenger terminal which is about 12,000 square meters, cargo terminal building, administration building, 35 meters high tower and operation building, central plant building, maintenance building and equipment, crash-fire-rescue station and equipment, and many others. http://iloiloonline.blogspot.com/2006/01/iloilo-airport-of-international.html

Iloilo Flood Control Project (P4B)

Project involves the improvement works for Tigum and Agana Rivers in the upstream of the diversion works, heightening of the river bank along the Iloilo river and the drainage improvement along Ingore and Bo. Obrero creeks in Iloilo City.

Jalandoni Bridge and its Related Components Project (P272-million)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/JalandoniBridge.jpg

The construction of the 170-meter bridge started in 2003. It is part of the P272-million Jalandoni Bridge and its Related Components Project, an integral part of the Iloilo River Rehabilitation Project under the President’s Bridge Program of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The President, assisted by city and local officials, is scheduled to lead the unveiling of the marker and ceremonial drive through shortly upon her arrival here Thursday morning.

Aside from Phase I, other scopes of the component project include the P95-million bridge approaches and access road leading to Hechanova Street that is due for completion also this year.

Other segments are the P60-million access road to Diversion Road and Boulevard, P32-million Dungon Bridge, and the P30-million flyover along General Luna Street.

Mixed-use Covention Center and Commercial and Gov't Office building
(P500M)

Tupas proposed the construction of a convention center and commercial and government office building in two year's time.

"One of the handicaps of Iloilo in promoting itself as a convention center is the unavailability of a facility that could accommodate 3,000 delegates.

Tupas said this would enhance the competitiveness of Iloilo in its bid to become the next investment center in the country.

Mejorada said the center would be as big as the new Capitol building with commercial and government agencies as tenants.

The building's design will blend with that of the new Provincial Capitol.
http://iloiloonline.blogspot.com/2006/01/6-storey-convention-center-to-rise.html

IT Park in Magsaysay Village

Another major project I am contemplating this year is the establishment of an Information Technology or IT Park on the property situated at the Magsaysay Village beside the Iloilo Sports Complex.

As you all know, there is a boom in the call center industry, which has the potential to employ thousands of young professionals, and Iloilo is one of the areas that is high on the list for operators as a location.

With this in mind, we might as well provide the infrastructure that is IT-ready to attract these investors and persuade them to locate in Iloilo. Other LGUs such as Leyte have already put up a similar project, and the returns are high. This way, the province can generate more revenues and help bring employment for our college graduates.

2006 Nat'l Football Open kicks off in Iloilo today

EXPECT some surprises in this year's edition of the national senior's football championship, which goes underway in this southern city today.

Although defending champion National Capital Region Football Association (NCRFA) and last year's runner-up, Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa), are seeded first and second, respectively, Philippine Football Federation officials are expecting keen competition to come from the six other teams, particularly from host and perennial threat, Iloilo Football Association (IFA) as well as North Cotabato Football Association (Nocofa) which is playing in the tournament for the first time.

Tournament Commissioner Pablito Araneta has his eyes keenly on Nocofa which upset Davao Football Association, reigning champions in the National women's and Under 19 categories, during the South Central Mindanao regional qualifiers late last month.

"They're highly motivated," said Araneta after noting that the Nocofa team is getting full support from the North Cotabato provincial government under Gov. Manny Piñol. The team is led by the governor's younger brother, M'lang vice mayor Joselito Piñol.

Vice Mayor Piñol credited M'lang emergence as a football power to a strong grassroots program which took hold early this decade. "We fielded over a hundred teams, the most by any province, during the Kasibulan (a football development program for the elementary level) in 2001," he said.

The tournament, also dubbed the Gov. Niel D. Tupas Sr. Cup, kicks off today with all eight teams mixing it up at the pitch.

In an early battle for Mindanao supremacy, Nocofa faces West Mindanao qualifier Zamboanga Football Association at the Santa Barbara Football Field, Nofa takes on Football Association of Masbate at the CPU Football Field, and NCRFA collides with Baguio City-Benguet Football Association in a rematch of their North-South Luzon championship encounter.

Formal opening rites, led by Gov. Tupas and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas, will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Lapaz Football Field after which the host team will be taking the field against Iligan-LAnao del Norte Football Association.

All set

Meanwhile, Team Biscocho Haus Iloilo, Iloilo City and Province's bet in the tournament, is all set.

This group of young, able and competitive players from different schools here have been spending the last month practicing, training and attending lectures.

Armed with determination, teamwork and proper guidance of the coaches, Team Biscocho Haus Iloilo hopes to make Iloilo proud.

The team's uniforms and banners were provided by Biscocho Haus, a staunch supporter of several sports events and other community activities in Iloilo such as Dinagyang Festival.

"It's part of our social responsibility, a way of giving back to society what it has blessed us," according to the management of Biscocho Haus./

Dingle drafts 10-year Ecological Solid Waste Management Plan
By Ian C. Espada

Dingle, Iloilo -- The Municipality of Dingle has finally drafted its 10-year Ecological Solid Waste Management Plan, which is up for submission to the National Solid Waste Commission for approval.

This move is in adherence to Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the "Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000" to ensure the protection of the public health and environment and utilize environmentally-sound methods that maximize the utilization of valuable resources and encourage resource conservation and recovery, among others.

In public a hearing held at the Dingle Covered Gym on Friday last week, Mr. Romeo Librando, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator, presented the draft to the barangay captains, Municipal Council members, members of the academe, and non-government organizations to hear their opinion and suggestions with regards to the implementation of this plan.

The barangay captains expressed their support to this 10-year ESWMP which is a commendable move in protecting the environment from hazards of solid wastes if not taken care of.

For the academe, District Supervisor Anecita Andora also supported the endeavor in behalf of the academe saying that they will utilize the students to encourage their parents to practice waste segregation at home.

She said they would strengthen the integration of ecological solid waste management and resource conservation and recovery topics into the academic curricula in order to promote environmental awareness and action among the citizenry.

Vice Mayor Reblun L. Lacson said should this 10-year ESWMP be approved, this will serve as legacy to the people in maintaining the cleanliness of the municipality.

She said, "healthy environment means healthy minds."

Marylou Sumbing, on the other hand, action officer for ecological solid waste program of the province commended the plan of Municipality of Dingle but she said that they should implement the programs and projects lined up in their plan in order that it will make their municipality compliant to the R.A. and which will ultimately lead to a clean and healthy environment.

Meanwhile, Mayor Robin E. Solinap encouraged everyone to start the practice of segregation at home to ensure the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of the best environmental practice in ecological waste management.

He said they will set guidelines and targets for solid waste avoidance and volume reduction through source reduction and waste minimization measures, including composting, recycling, re-use, recovery, green charcoal process, and others, before collection, treatment and disposal in appropriate and environmentally sound solid waste management facilities in accordance with ecologically sustainable development principles.

A Name Synonymous with Vision
Sarabia Optical celebrates 100 years of excellence.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/FBS-1stFilOptometristlowres.jpg

Dr. Federico B. Sarabia: The Man

In 1901, the 15-year-old sailed for the United States and found himself in the company of Filipino workers and pensionados, referring to the first batch of Philippine government scholars sent to America for graduate studies. The group encouraged the adventurous lad to finish his secondary education free as a working student at an agro-industrial school in California.

Dr. Federico B. Sarabia, at 21 years of age, returned to the Philippines in 1906 with a doctorate in Optometry from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He established his first clinic in Iloilo City in 1906. Dr. Sarabia later moved his clinic to Manila's elite section, Escolta, in 1918 where he served a number of distinguished clients including President Manuel L. Quezon, and Saturnina Rizal (the sister of Jose Rizal), whose eyeglass case with "Sarabia Optical" markings, is exhibited in Fort Santiago. Dr. Federico B. Sarabia was a simple family man yet his entrepreneurial spirit and burning desire to help his fellowmen by improving their lives through eye care left a legacy nurtured by four generations of Sarabia optometrists and ophthalmologists for a century.

One Hundred Years of Excellence!

Not many brands and business entities can lay claim to the fact that they have been around for a hundred years! The Sarabia legacy thrives and lives on with 38 family-owned opticals located all over the Philippines. The Sarabia brand also figures prominently in the Iloilo City scene with the famous Sarabia Manor Hotel.

On February 22, 2006, the Sarabia Optical Centennial celebration formally begins with a launching event that will be held at the Ayala Museum with no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as guest of honor. The family's relationship with the President's goes back a long way when her grandfather, Engineer Macaraeg and Dr. Federico Sarabia were friends and clubmates. The event will also unveil an exhibit that will showcase the family collection of memorabilia that chronicles the Sarabia's last 100 years.

The Sarabia Legacy

One of the highlights of the centennial celebration is a ceremonial lighting of 10 candles, each symbolizing a decade of the Sarabia Optical's past. Each decade's candle will be lit by someone whose forebears were key people in the Sarabia Optical of the particular decade. Chosen to light the symbolic candles, in addition to President Arroyo, are famed violinist Gil Lopez Kabayao whose grandfather was one of Dr. Sarabia's distinguished patients in his Iloilo clinic, Mrs. Gemma Cruz Araneta who will represent her ancestor Dona Trinidad Rizal whose eyeglass case exhibited at Fort Santiago is labeled "Anteojos de Dr. Federico Sarabia," Mrs. Nini Quezon Avancena who will represent her father Pres Manuel L. Quezon -- both a friend and a client of the 1st Filipino optometrists, Senator Mar Roxas representing his grandfather President Manuel Roxas and Senator Gerry Roxas -- both clients of Sarabia Optical, Mr. Peter Roa, presenting the maternal grandfather Dr. Narciso Ner, Sr. who partnered with Dr. Sarabia in his Davao City Optical venture, Dr. Mariano Tanada -- Chairman of the Board of Optometry (a position also once held by Dr. Federico B. Sarabia, his daughter Dr. Salvacion and son Dr. Federico Jr.), Mr. Eduardo Roces, representing his Father Don Chino Roces a close friend of Dr. Federico's son Manuel and a client of Manuel's optometrist daughter Wowi Sarmiento, Mrs. Florence Chan in behalf of her son Jose Mari Chan who, together with Federico's grandchild Dr. Miguel Sarabia, co-founded the Tony Chan Memorial Eye Center (West Visayas' first and only Opthalmic Laser Center), and Dr. Francis Sarabia-Ong, the youngest Sarabia optometrist.

"Sta. Barbara Celebrates Philippine Golf 1907—2007: A Century of Dedication to an Ageless Game! "

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/golf_banner.jpg

History of the Sta. Barbara Golf Course

Founded in 1907, it is the oldest existing golf course in the Philippines.

The British Connection, Mid 1800's

The presence of the British Vice Consul in Iloilo , in the person of Mr. Nicolas Loney, since the 1850's, engaging in the trading of various goods from the Visayas, specially sugar, is proof of early and active British presence in the Philippines. Mr. Loney, who gained recognition as the 'Father of the Philippine sugar Industry', enhanced foreign access to Philippine products and promoted the growth of the local economy thru improved transport mobility by sea and land. In particular, this would have led the Philippine Commission's American colonizers at the turn of the century to pursue the construction of railroads in the Major Island of the Visayas due to the existence of vigorous trade and economic activities in Panay and the adjacent islands. Such historical undertaking pursued by the early American colonizer, as the widespread construction of railway systems for transportation, sugar production and mining, employing existing British expertise and technology in steam locomotives, bought about major peripheral influences to the lifestyle of the Filipinos. By all accounts, the start of the Panay railways construction coincided sharply with the Scottish engineers picking a track of rolling fields in the hills, reminiscent of Scottish glens in Sta. Barbara, to play their 'national past time'. Thus was the game of golf born in this parts of the world.

Early Nipa Club huts, Pre-War Clubhouse.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/oldclubhouse1.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/oldclubhouse2.jpg

The earliest structures that served to shelter the early 1900's Sta. Barbara golfers were simple nipa huts built by the Panay Railways company for their expatriate personnel. They were located at the entrance of the course, around the area of the present parking lots, alongside the 11th fairway. These small huts were later replaced, and by the 1920's a bigger wooden and concrete one stood across the 11th fairway, to the side of the 18th green, underneath the acacia trees. This was taken over by the USAFE forces at the start of WW II, and subsequently destroyed by the invading forces. After the war, small nipa huts were built in the area to serve as temporary shelter for the returning golfers, who took about a year to bring the course back in playable form. In 1947, at the leadership of the manager of the local British trading company Strachan & McMurray, Mr. Wallace McGregor Davis Sr. and member-architect Zafiro Ledesma supervised the construction and expansion of the 'Quonset Hut' Clubhouse. This was to be used following a few more renovations in later years, up to 1998, when the present, modern Clubhouse was constructed out of membership funds.

Old Golfing Structures and Landmarks: (Sandboxes, 10th Tee Stone stairways, Alexander Ditch and Ponds, Centuries-old Acacias)

The following are descriptions of remnants of old golfing structures, evidence of the turn-of-the-century era structures and decades-old links of the present course. Excluded from these are the rare late 1800's golf balls, indisputably brought and lost in play by its founders, and decades later excavated from the ponds of the golf course. They are safely kept for posterity.

Sandboxes:

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/sandbox.jpg

Replicas of the stone and concrete sandboxes, with a couple of repaired original ones, still exist. This is unique to the old course, a memorabilia of how the golf ball was then played off the tee mound "with a handful of water scooped from the holder and poured on the sand in the adjacent box, the 'niblick ' (the iron wedge) is then used to scoop the wet sand which is used to 'tee-up' the golf ball on the ground."

Stone Stairways:

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/stonestairways.jpg

Located at the foot of the 10th tee leading down towards the ponds, the remains of this structure, reinforced through the years, was constructed for the convenience and protection of golfers against a muddy and slippery descent.

Alexander Ditch and Ponds:

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/holepond1.jpg

Perhaps built earlier than his actual term as club President in 1932 to 1933, the main drainage ditch and ponds G.M. Alexander's major contribution to the sustainability and permanence of the old course. To this day, this major vein receives rain water tributaries from the present 1st, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 18th fairways. These tracks of land practically served as the original layout of the first 9 holes. The old 'turn-of-the-century' golf Balls, evidence of the early birth of birth of golf in these hills, were dredged out of the ponds that collected the draining waters from these fairways.

Centuries-old Acacia trees are characteristic of the old course. Many have trunk diameters in excess of 2 meters, attesting to their age. They had been preserved through the years as part of the Sta. Barbara Course's historic identity.

Present Appearance

18-hole Championship Course (1980's)

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/hole3.jpg

The full 18-hole tournament course was completed in the 1980's, during the term of Club President Francisco ' Paco ' Maravilla Years of planning and painstaking negotiations and fundraising activities were needed to slowly complete a full golf house. Some land areas were added following either an outright purchase, or some donation or a long-term lease agreement. Today we have a fairly challenging par-70 layout, with about 5790 yards of fairways, maintained by some 250-strong active membership and an even bigger number of corporate shareholders. Negotiations continue to this date and expansion plans continue to be pursued for a better, more challenging, more attractive and visitor-friendly Sta. Barbara golf course.

Contemporary Clubhouse (1997)

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/clubfacade.jpg

Built in 1997 and opened in 1998, the new and modern clubhouse is in itself an achievement of the local membership. It was designed to accommodate a growing number of active members in 1997. Coming into the golf course centennial at decade later in 2007, the problem of overcrowding in the locker rooms and a lack of space is again facing the club as it did in the late 1900's. Expansion plans are in the works.

National Historical Marker

On July 12, 2005, IGCCI received a letter from Mr. Ocampo, Chairman of the National Historical Institute (NHI) officially recognizing the historical significance of Sta. Barbara Golf Course as the "Oldest Existing Golf Course" in the Philippines . With this confirmation, the Centenary Committee is planning to install a "Historical Marker" in the golf course as part of our Centenary celebration in 2007.

The Iloilo Golf & Country Club Inc. (IGCCI) forges ahead to make the Santa Barbara Golf Course a premier golf destination in the Philippines. Maintained by some 268-strong active members and an even bigger number of corporate shareholders, it will continue its development plans towards a more challenging, more attractive, environment friendly and world-class golfing and recreational facility.

Central Stands the Test of Time

It was founded in 1905 as the Jaro Industrial School by missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. It started as an Elementary Vocational School for poor boys who worked for their board and tuition. Perhaps it was the first school in the Philippines to teach that labor is honor. The school also had the distinction of having organized the first student government in the country - the Jaro Industrial School Republic, and one of the oldest student newspapers - the Central Echo.

Dr. William 0. Valentine, the first principal, worked hard to have the school incorporated and recognized by the government. His objectives were reached in 1913, the year when the school began to admit female students also. In 1915, the first two years of high school were opened. In 1920, the third and fourth year classes were added and the following year the first batch of high School graduates were turned out.

To satisfy the growing desire of young people for education, a junior college was opened in 1923 and the name of the school was changed to Central Philippine College. The senior college was established in 1936 and by 1940 five degrees were offered: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Theology and Bachelor of Religious Education.

The war broke, out and with it came destruction and death. The college buildings were destroyed. Eleven American missionaries were massacred by the enemy. Central students, faculty and staff members and alumni joined the guerrilla movement or the Civil Resistance Government. Many of them laid down their lives for democracy and freedom.

The Central Spirit however did not die in the night that was World War II. As soon as war ended the college was reopened by loyal faculty members and returning missionaries who were caught by the war in America. Destroyed buildings were reconstructed and new ones were built with funds from friends at home and abroad. Postwar reconstruction resulted in a well-laid, attractive campus.

April 1, 1953, was an important landmark in the whole CPU story. On that day the ardent dream of thousands of alumni and the long line of American and Filipino pioneers became a reality: Central Philippine College gained university status and became Central Philippine University.

From the founding of the school, Filipinos were gradually given larger responsibilities in its administration. In 1966 the first Filipino president, Dr. Rex D. Drilon, was elected; and in 1968 the entire university property - land, buildings, and equipment - was turned over by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society to the Filipino corporation of CPU. Since 1973, all members of the Board of Trustees and administrative officials of the university have been Filipinos.

In 97 years, CPU has grown from an elementary school with 17 pupils to a widely known university with an enrollment of over 12,000. The 24-hectare campus, which was originally chosen for its quiet and relative isolation, is now a veritable community by itself, with more than 30 buildings used for classrooms and support facilities.

CPU has grown much in physical plant and in educational programs, but it has remained true to its mission as a Christian institution whose motto is Scientia et Fides (Knowledge and Faith). It is affiliated with the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches and maintains fraternal ties with the International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches (known before as the American Foreign Mission Society) and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. The university is also a member of the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities (ACSCU) and the Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia (ACUCA).

Paulino Alcantara - Barca All-Time Leading Scorer
By: Ian Estenor

Filipinos and football? What an odd concept.
Although basketball has become a national obsession in the Philippines, some Filipinos have found "football" to be much more to their liking. The world’s most popular sport has a loyal following in the Visayas, particularly Iloilo.

Panay’s most populated province serves as a hotbed of talent. At Central Philippine University in Jaro, footballers from the school and around the area often gather to play matches. Santa Barbara, Barotac and LaPaz are several of the communities where the sport thrives in popularity.

Since football is overshadowed by America’s most popular export, the stars of the game live in relative obscurity. But earlier in the century, Iloilo-born Paulino Alcantara made his mark. To this day, he is still the all-time leading goalscorer for Futbol Club Barcelona of Barcelona, Spain with 374 goals in 375 games.

FC Barcelona, or "Barca," as it is known in football circles, is considered the world’s wealthiest professional football club. It boasts the largest stadium in Europe with a seating capacity of 115,000 and also has a club membership of over 100,000 people worldwide.

Paulino Alcantara is considered one of Barca’s legendary players because of his goalscoring exploits. He lacked the build of a stereotypical athlete, but he possessed the killer instincts of a matador. This offensive machine knew where the goal was and often made sure that the ball was in it.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/alcantara1.jpg

Alcantara was born in Iloilo in 1896 to a Spanish father, who was in the Spanish Army that was stationed in the province. He began playing football at a very young age and took a liking to it. In 1910, he traveled to Barcelona to continue his education.

While in school, he played for a club formed by his classmates called, "Galeno." But his heart belonged to Barca, and he ended up joining their youth squad, where his talent made an immediate impression. On the evening of August 14, 1912, at 15 years of age, Alcantara made his debut with Barca’s first team, the professional team. He scored three goals in an 8-2 win.

In football, most professional clubs field reserve and youth squads to supplement the first team – the professional team. The reserve and youth squads play separate schedules. Players often work their way up the ladder for promotion to the professional team by playing on the youth squads as youngsters, then moving up to the reserve squads as they grow older.

The concept of drafting players out of high school and college does not exist in professional football. It is the responsibility of the team to develop players and not the schools.

From 1916 to 1918, Alcantara went back to the Philippines. During this time, he played with a team called the Bohemians of Manila.

After coming back to Barca, he played defense, an unusual position because he was accustomed to scoring goals instead of preventing them. The British coach, Jack Greenwell, made the decision to play Alcantara outside of his normal role. His decision was short-lived. Barca’s club membership, "Los Socios," demanded that Alcantara be switched back to his normal position. The paying members received their wish. Alcantara went back to scoring goals on a usual basis.

In 1920, Spain selected him for the Olympic team, but he turned down the offer because of his medical studies. Since school was his priority, he only represented Spain in international football competition five times. He scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Belgium in his first international match at the age of 25. He also played for the Philippine National Team. Alcantara is on record as being the first player from Barcelona born outside of Europe to represent Spain in international football competition.

He officially retired on July 5, 1927. The Spanish National Team and Barcelona played a "testimonial" that day, a game in honor of Alcantara. At age 31, he felt it was time to dedicate his life to his profession.

But it was not a definite goodbye to football as a whole. He briefly served on the coaching staff of Spain’s National Team in the 50s – three matches against Switzerland, Belgium and Sweden. He won one game and tied the other two.

Paulino Alcantara died in Barcelona on February 13, 1964. With his goalscoring titles, he also won five Spanish Cup championships and 10 Catalonia championships (Barcelona being the capital of the province of Catalonia).

Alcantara is not only one of Spanish football’s most revered legends, but a revered legend in the sport of football as a whole. He represents not only Spain, but the Philippines also. He represents success not only in Catalonia, but also in Iloilo.

Barca will celebrate its 100-year anniversary as a football club on November 28. It is more than likely Alcantara will be honored along with the other great players who have passed through this region of Spain.

Filipinos and football. What a wonderful concept.

Araneta amazes for NCR booters; Iloilo, Negros blank foes

Feb 22, 2006
By Cedelf Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

ILOILO CITY -- Growing up, Ian Araneta swears he never imposed himself in the football field of Barotac Nuevo town. He was making his presence felt elsewhere.

But for 90 minutes yesterday, he stood out in the pitch where the finest players of the country started their careers.

Seeing action for title defenders National Capital Region, the 23-year-old Araneta put on a show on his homecoming, knocking in two goals in a 4-1 victory over Baguio at the start of the PFF-National Men’s Open Championship here.

“I just tag along with the older players in town, so I was never really the king of this field,” said Araneta, of the Philippine Air Force, who is actually one of 12 players in the NCR team who hail from Barotac Nuevo, the country’s football hotbed about 25 km from the city proper.

“They (older players) said I played well today.”

Spanish midfielder Luis Lozano started the scoring for NCR, right at the opening minute, before Araneta’s header off a Ruel Gener cross in the 5th minute made it 2-0.

The nifty NCR striker broke loose from an offside trap and beat the Baguio keeper on a one-on-one play in the 39th minute.

Another Barotac-born booter, Emilio Caligdong finished off Baguio three minutes from time with a left-footed rocket outside the box, after Izzeldin El Habib, one of three Sudanese playing for Baguio, had booted in his team’s only goal in the 77th minute.

Meanwhile, Team Biscocho House-Iloilo drew a hat-trick from Dan Padernal and a double from Kenley Delgado in a convincing 5-0 win over Iligan in Bracket B in La Paz.

Tournament debutant North Cotabato blanked Zamboanga, 5-0 in Sta. Barbara.

Playing together as a team for the first time, Negros Occidental equaled Iloilo’s impressive triumph with a 5-0 rout of Iligan.

“This is actually a practice game for us,” Negros coach Freddie Lazarito said.

But cohesion was never a problem for Negros, which had five players scoring a goal each. And had it not been for the goal posts, the team would have scored in double digits. Strikers Floriano Pasilan, Frederick Jan Serios and Jerome Orcullo were twice denied by the woodwork.

Serios opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a tap-in after capitalizing on a misjudgment by the Masbate keeper.

A glancing header by Reydrick Viliran off an Orcullo free kick from the corner on the hour mark made it 2-0, before Pasilan, Orcullo and Dexter Dean Versario each made their contributions in the final 10 minutes.

Padernal got his hat-trick as early as the 37th minute, latching on a through ball from Reymund Juarez with a left-footed roller from five yards out, after scoring on a header in the 6th minute and a rare tap-in in the 34th.

Delgado produced the best goal of the tournament so far, pouncing on another Juarez pass with a one-touch volley in the 53rd minute, before finishing the scoring with a grounding right-footed strike three minutes from time.

Iloilo Sports Complex development underway

The Economic Enterprise Office headed by Mr. Francisco "Bombit" Heler, Jr. has formulated a strategic plan for the development of the Iloilo Sports Complex in Brgy. Magsaysay, La Paz, Iloilo City.

The development, to be implemented starting next year (2006), include the construction of state-of-the-art Badminton Center, Construction of 109 Linear Meter Over Pass from the Covered Gym to the Iloilo Sports Complex for the security of gym users, improvement of sports facilities and amenities, among others.

Heler also envisioned making Iloilo Sports Complex as a center on sports capability building to facilitate and enhance the skills of coaches and on sports medicine and clinic.

He added Gov. Niel D. Tupas, Sr. has also approved the plan to buy shuttle bus which will be used for private tours through networking with travel and tours and restaurant in the city as part of the office's income/self-liquidating project.

Heler said the Iloilo Sports Complex Hostel with two big rooms and eight rooms are open for those who find comfort of home away from home in very affordable price.

As a come one for hostel occupants, they are free to use ISC amenities such as the swimming pool, badminton court, basketball court, lawn tennis court, etc, he added.

Heler said he never stops from thinking about the programs and projects with are self-sustaining and self-liquidating against traditional allotment like Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) and real property taxes.

Aside from these projects, his office is setting up Gallery for Ilonggo Achievers who excelled in various sports discipline in during the past t and present. Palarong Pambansa, Southeast Asian Games and Olympic Games.

He said cash incentives amounting to P52,000 were already given to athletes who won medals in 2003 SEA Games.

Heler, a sportsman himself, is willing to give honor to Ilonggo athletes who excelled in international sports events which is also being supported by Governor Tupas. (Capitol News - December 2005)

yups...i think its attainable...

That is a very unrealistic hike. In Sim City, you could do the trick by hiking the taxes near end term and lowering it immediately after collecting the taxes. In reality, Businessmen will just pack up and leave... unless they are really crazy about Iloilo that they are willing to lose a lot of money to taxes.

Dream on...

Hey3x!!!! We're on our 10th Thread... Like the title of the forum, you know. Just curious, why is a 14th floor building not allowed in the City Proper when the airport is very far from it? Is the Mandurriao Airport the reason why we can't build skyscrapers around the city?

I think that the airport is not the reason. Downtown airport is too far and oriented away from the congested Downtown Iloilo. In fact the IBH is close to airport and yet it is about 8 storeys high. When I did my Thesis on the Iloilo Convention Center and Hotel, I had to chop of the 8th floor because it was already well over the height limit. Maybe the ATO should check on whether the MEDICUS and the IBH have exceeded the height limit and maybe chop off the top floor like what they did to Sugarland Hotel.

One major consideration would be the load bearing capacity of the land. With much of Iloilo being originally swampland, I think it could be done but it would be expensive. Makati was swampland too not long ago.

The Site of Robinson's Iloilo is a little less than 3km from the Airport, I guess that isn't a long distance considering the speed a plane travels.

I'm baffled as well why the ATO would not allow Robinsons to build the building. Since as you said, there are already 2 8-storey buildings in a 1km radius from the airport and as far as I've noticed the planes do not cross the downtown area because they are passing through Jaro.

------------
Ahh... I've just read that the ATO had already ordered the Iloilo Business Hotel to chop off one floor because it had exceeded the height limit, it ended up in court (I dunno with the Medicus Bldg.). I don't know what the outcome is ...

I GUESS THAT ROBINSON'S WAS PLANNING TO PUT UP A MIDTOWN HOTEL BACK THEN. I THINK IT DIDN'T GO THROUGH BECAUSE THE HOTEL CHAIN IS SUFFERING A FINANCIAL OR MANAGEMENT PROBLEM. THEY WERE ALSO PLANNING TO BUILD A HOTEL AT THE BACK OF ROBINSONS BACOLOD TOO. THE PILING/COLUMNS ARE STILL VISIBLE WHEN YOU PARK AT THE BACK. I'LL TRY TO LOOK UP WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE IBH AND ATO.

WHEN I MADE THE COMPUTATION FOR THE PROPOSED HOTEL WHICH WAS LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM WHERE IBH HAS BEEN BUILT, I WAS VERY SURE IT COULD NOT BE MORE THAN AN AVERAGE 7 STOREY BUILDING.

What can we do din?? Its the BIR's assessment. I suggest you send them a copy of SIM CITY.

In reality, if businesses just pay the "proper" taxes, the 3B target is still small. I mean, majority of the businesses are paying "retokado" taxes. I dont know if you have experienced being approached by the "revenue agents" to just pay up a certain amount so to avoid paying a much higher amount on your taxes. They can dig up your past taxes and they can give you hell on your business.

Thats why I said it is "attainable". They(BIR) know they can if they want to.

That is a very unrealistic hike. In Sim City, you could do the trick by hiking the taxes near end term and lowering it immediately after collecting the taxes. I'm not from Dingle, Sugarboy. Our ancestral home is in Barotac Nuevo but our family moved to Jaro years ago pa. My parents and two sisters are living in NY/NJ now. It's only my bro and his family ang nabilin sa Pinas til the petition to migrate to America will be approved. Are you in the family of politicians too? My first cousin is in the Circa of Iloilo's politics at the moment. I think nagpa-change na sila back from American citizenship to Filipino citizenship or nag-dual sila. I was there last 2004 during campaign period. It's nice to be back home at times. :)

Dads block guv's deal request anew for convention center
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao

THREE members of the 'conscience bloc' in the Provincial Board and Vice Governor Roberto Armada have turned down the request of Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. for the construction of a convention center.

Tupas asked the board to authorize him to enter into a technical assistance agreement with the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Center in creating a multi-million convention center and new establishments here.

Board Member Domingo B. Oso Jr, chairman of the committee on ordinances and legal matters said the authority is to give Tupas the power to sign a contract of agreement with BOT in behalf of the Provincial Government.

He added that the BOT would have to assist the Provincial Government in knowing whether the project at a certain site is feasible or not. Oso added that the technical assistance is rendered for free while the BOT officer's travel and accommodation expenses will be shouldered by the Provincial Government.

Armada however said that granting the authority to the Governor is like giving the latter a blank check. He added that the BOT nowadays is not feasible and spending for the BOT's services is throwing away budget.

"I think we should look deeper into this. This is not just spending for a barangay hall. This project is gargantuan in nature," he said.

Armada said there has been a confirmation from Tupas that the convention center will cost more than how much was spent for the new capitol building.

Board Member Niel D. Tupas Jr., chairman of the Committee on Appropriations said they have three choices in fulfilling the projects.
First was the said BOT, second through bond floatation and third is through direct loan.

Tupas also was amenable that a BOT is not feasible but he refuted that Tupas Sr. said that the building would cost more than how much was spent for the new capitol.

The committee report was adopted in the end after a vote of six (majority)-four (conscience bloc).

I guess we should applaud the CDO businessmen for being good citizens then. If what you say is true, then both Bacolod and Iloilo should have about the same figure as CDO. But then, It doesn't necessarily mean that people in both Visayan cities are cheats... just smarter perhaps? What's the use of a big tax income if most of it goes to the National Government anyway and ends up being spent in MAnila?

i agree with the "conscience bloc" kagawads. The project needs further study. It simply shows how good people in Iloilo capitol are. Again, there are three options being considered and BOT is not likely to be an ideal one. These oppositions are too good to be true considering that the budget they'll be using will be taken from Ilonggos' taxes so dapat lang that every Ilonggo needs to keep on eye with this proposal. Of all those three funding prospects, I'll probably go for the second one. Definitely, a big NO-NO for a bank loan. We'll end up paying years and years of interest sa bangko and as much as possible iyon ang dapat nating iwasan. :)

Agree with you, @daks2003 and @kirby21. We have to be vigilant when it comes to this matter. Project like this will have a good impact in our city and province but if it'll put our budget at risk, then a good precautionary measure will be considered first and foremost. Whatever the decision will be, I gladly support it. People in our capitol had better minds when it comes to this project. Hopefully, they will not marred it with politics. Tupas administration had or is undergoing a lot of controversies lately, so hinay-hinay lang anay.

British embassy sponsors
workshop on entrepreneurship

ILOILO City -- A British embassy-sponsored two-day workshop on the impact of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on reducing poverty began on Wednesday.

The embassy said the workshop was part of the British government's effort to utilize corporate social responsibility strategies in ensuring profitability and maximizing the impact of SMEs on poverty reduction.

A similar conference / workshop was held earlier in Davao City in February 7 and 8. The third and last one is scheduled in Angeles City at the end of this month.

The project is part of the embassy's Economic Governance Programme and the University of Asia and the Pacific, together with the various regional Chambers of Commerce.

Partnering with the embassy are the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., the Iloilo Business Club and the Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc.

The conference and workshop provide an understanding of the fundamentals, drivers and strategies of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as applied to SMEs, the embassy said.

The activities identify the benefits and relevance of CSR in the activities of SMEs, provide innovative CSR strategies of SMEs as examples to achieve profitability and local development and recommend a framework on integrating CSR strategies that SMEs can consider in their operations.

As more SMEs become aware and adopt CSR practices, it is expected that the SMEs will achieve far better and cost-effective compliance with social and environmental requirements, access to new markets, risk mitigation, competitive advantage and local or regional image enhancement.

As always. And I'm proud of it, too, Mars. Basta Centralian baskog gid man.

Nandoon sa Thread 9 ang list ng mga projects for Iloilo. Quite a good number of projects though. And it's really impressive. Again, slowly but surely. :) And aslong as we keep moving on. Go Iloilo !

Best of the best, Kirbs. As long as we are moving well in a right direction, okay na iyan. Things are in-good shape back home. Although some of our kababayans had been affected at once by an EVAT implementation, I guess it's for the best naman. Let's keep hoping that our economy can sustain whatever problems we'll be having in the future.

I think they dont want another "controversy". They already have enough controversy in the Iloilo Airport Project. Gina unahan na nila si Tupas kay budlay na nga iya naman bato kag balas ang i-supply sa construction sang proposed convention center hehehe

I believed so, Daks. It's always for the good of everything. And I agree with Wecky's suggestion, too. Bond flotation is the most feasible way to fund this project. BOT and Loan are both expensive means, which I believed a bigger portion of our provincial funds will be allocated if they'll use any of these two. We have a good and positive budget right now. Let's keep it that way.

Hello Kirby. Ara ka da gali?

Of course, we'll survive. We're strong, aren't we? About EVAT implementation, okay lang yan. We're even paying a massive 22% tax here in UK. Of course, we can't deny that our taxes here have been used for the good of services, etc. I wouldn't mind paying more as long as the services will be improved. A ten percent increase is just a slight adjustment for sure. Btw, are you also referring to what happened in Leyte? It's all over the news here in UK for the past few days.

Just wandering around the Skybar's forum. :) I've got nothing to do. I'm off for three days and I'm so knackered I just don't want to leave my room at the moment. lol.

A ten percent EVAT is not too bad at all. I don't think they'll be greatly affected with the increase. About the Leyte Mudslide, I'm so sorry I haven't had an update of anything about it. I've seen the feature/footage on BBC News couple of days ago for 2 consecutive days, then nawala na. The last time I've heard was there were international agencies helping with the rescue.

Alubihod is such a great hang out place in Guimaras aside from the very expensive Nagarao Island of Mr Stummer. Are you fond of mountain climbing? Try to visit Bucari in Leon or have a family horseriding in Barotac Nuevo. When it comes to food, try restos along coastal road. There's plenty of them there. Or probably visit some other Iloilo towns where you have family ties/relatives. With beaches naman, Iloilo Northern Towns offer a bit more today especially in areas of Concepcion, Estancia, etc.

Guys, any updates about our forthcoming projects in Iloilo? I've heard/read somewhere else that the Iloilo Airport in Sta Barbara will be handed over to DOTC much earlier than expected (march 2007). I think ginpaspasan siguro sang mga Hapon ila obra sa aton airport. Yehey ! It's a good thing though. The earlier, the better. And by the way, have you read the editorial of TNT today? Medyo daw makadlaw man ako ba? Will this be another problem to solve or kabuangan lang sang mga politicos? ... hehehe:

The profit is 'greener' than the grass

The construction of the new Iloilo airport of international standard appears to be in full swing. The aeronautical area is almost done and ready for pavement. In fact, its contractor, Taisei-Shimizu Joint Venture, expects to finish and turn over the project to the government within its contract completion month of October 2006 despite such stumbling blocks as political interferences, weather disturbances and the sub-constructors' slippages.

However, there seems to be a brewing controversy as regards the landscaping of 90 hectares of land --- or 45 hectares on each of the runway --- with the right grass. Should it be carabao grass or Bermuda grass?

In most airports in the country, it's the carabao grass that contours the off-runway perimeter because it is the cheapest, the most abundant and the sturdiest type. Since it is indigenous in Iloilo, it needs practically no maintenance, no watering and no mowing.

Bermuda grass, on the other hand, is a European luxury that's practical only for small lawns. While it is easy to sod on local ground, it needs regular "tender loving care" in the hands of experienced gardeners. Therefore, its survival depends on expensive maintenance and replacement. Worse, it is not easily obtainable here, hence must be sourced from far-away provinces. The possibility is not remote, therefore, that the green runway embankment would turn brown within weeks. Think of the money that would have gone to waste.

In the long run, therefore, the lowly carabao grass would end up more magnificent to behold than the withering and forlorn Bermuda grass.

We raise this concern because from the grapevine, we have heard of so-called "irresistible forces" aimed at compelling Taisei-Shimizu to award the airport landscaping to an influential Bermuda grass supplier, in effect ignoring the carabao grass supplier it has already transacted business with.

Obviously, we see profit motive as the hidden but "greener" argument in favor of the Bermuda. We therefore urge the Department of Transportation and Communications to look into the matter now before it's too late.

... this one is so, so controversial I guessed considering that there's so much problems besetting our country today and what they are arguing back home in Iloilo is the kind of grass to be used in our new airport? What a pathetic inuendo ! What's with bermuda and carabao grass do with the aeronautical brouhaha?

DOT chief double-checks charges, background of city's accuser

By Florence F. Hibionada

TrompetaYes, Iloilo does have a problem with abusive taxi drivers thus a valid complaint and observation. But no, the city could not be the "dirtiest in the Philippines" as tagged by a supposed European envoy.

For instance, the city was supposedly in a very dirty state, the drivers very dishonest and over-all Iloilo stay very unpleasant. As such, a call was made to other foreigners to stay away from Iloilo and instead go elsewhere in the Philippine

"It is really unfair that such sweeping statement is made. But Director Trompeta is making the right decision to have the complaints checked and duly addressed. Iloilo battles Negros; NCR-Cotabato tiff up

First posted 00:42am (Mla time) Feb 25, 2006
By Cedelf Tupas
Inquirer
Editor's Note: Published on page A22 of the February 25, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

BAROTAC NUEVO -- Negros Occidental and team Biscocho Haus-Iloilo rekindle their bitter rivalry today when they clash for a finals seat in the PFF-National Men’s Open Championship here.

Defending champion National Capital Region battles newcomer Northern Cotabato, shortly after the 1:30 p.m. encounter between the regional rivals in this football-loving town.

Negros coach Freddie Lazarito minced no words that he wants his team to battle Iloilo for a place in the finals.

“We would rather face Iloilo in the semis,” Lazarito said, stressing that his team has yet to play true to form despite posting a sweep of its group matches. “It has a weaker lineup than NCR.”

Iloilo, however, would be tougher than expected, coach Lurex Araneta told the Inquirer.

For one, the Ilonggos are expected to come out with greater firepower after losing to NCR, 0-1, with Ian Araneta, a product of the grassroots program of this town, coming up with the game-winner in the 70th minute loss toughened the team,” the Iloilo coach said, adding that his side is getting used to rising above adversities, citing their first game, where seven key players bucked dehydration to combine for a 5-0 win over Iligan.

One thing going for the Ilonggos is the overwhelming crowd support here that also carried them to a come-from-behind 5-2 win over Baguio Wednesday.

The game also puts brothers Ziggy and Jezurel Tonog on opposite sides.

Ziggy, the younger of the two brothers, had been anchoring his team’s defense in the eliminations, while Jezurel plays midfield.

Negros is actually the last team to have won the national title, before NCR claimed back-to-back crowns in Manila and Cagayan de Oro City, respectively.

Regarded as the tournament’s surprise package, Northern Cotabato posted two wins in the eliminations, before losing the Group A plum to Negros, while NCR rampaged to an impressive 4-1 win over Baguio and whitewashed Iligan, 10-0.

It is definitely true that Iloilo is in a congested and polluted state. It is also true that the drivers in Iloilo are rude... but the taxi drivers are honest from what my father and I have experienced. My dad dropped his mobile phone on a taxi cab and we called it. Good thing the phone wasn't on mute... otherwise the driver wouldn't have heard it ringing and somebody else would have taken the phone. The driver returned the phone to my dad and wouldn't even accept money my father offered to give him for his effort. We had to change our schedule though because it took the driver a while to return it.

I went on vacation in Iloilo back in 1998. I found the city nice but was disappointed to find some historical structures renovated or altered. But generally, I really liked the place. And also generally speaking, the people were kind and one of the nicest I've encountered. I also liked their accent when they speak Tagalog. The food was also good.

I have very good memories of my vacation in Iloilo. By the way, I'm from Batangas.

That is why I never liked fiestas. In fact, I would probably be one of the few Bacolenos who'd be happy if they got rid of the Maskara Festival. The Panaad Festival seems more sensible with the mess concentrated at one area only. You guys should visit Bacolod during the Panaad FEstival around February or March.

Oh, by the way, I think that guy would have said the same thing even if he went to Iloilo during an ordinary day. Iloilo is really congested and polluted. Good thing that the taxi drivers are at least honest enough.

Germans to be exact ... they even called New York City as the city of slums and of beggars ... so, it's not new to me at all ... when Europeans go on holiday, just wish you'll have good reviews coz most of them will not say much of the place. They'll simply brush them aside. Of course, most of them are two-faced ... so much of good things to say in front of you but when they turned their back, they'll say differently. Anyway, let's just take the comment positively and consructively. There's so much we need to develop back home when it comes to tourism. I doubt if in any European Holiday Reviews that one city in the Philippines could be on top of their list. Believe me, we really need to learn a lot with Europeans in terms of tourism industry. I think they're the best in the world. :)

That European guy visited Iloilo right after the Dinagyang Festival, as expected Iloilo looks like a bomb hit it then. I agree some parts of Iloilo are dirty but what the guys says is very exaggerated.

They loved exaggeration here in Europe .. have you listen on how Europeans speak at all? You'll be amazed ! It's kinda rude for any of us Filipinos because we're not used to it ... but hey, it's just an expression. Europe will not produce best writers in the world if they're simply flat affect. Try reviewing Bridget Jones and other European movies. Italian movies could be the best example of them all ! :)

Hi Jon. I've just asked Kirby few minutes ago lang .. hehehe .. nice one and welcome, welcome, welcome. I have no idea that naka-post ka na gali sa thread 9. I wasn't able to see the last part of the thread kay indi ko man makita. Anyways, hope you'll enjoy our very own forum here.

I think gin-repost ni Ferrersky ang link sang Thread 9, Weck.

Will this be another problem to solve or kabuangan lang sang mga politicos? ... hehehe:

... this one is so, so controversial I guessed considering that there's so much problems besetting our country today and what they are arguing back home in Iloilo is the kind of grass to be used in our new airport? What a pathetic inuendo ! What's with bermuda and carabao grass do with the aeronautical brouhaha?

qoute/misqoute ... it's becoming funnier each day. News back home are of extraordinaire in nature. Wala na sila buhaton nga iban di amo na lang ini ila problemahan. Mind you, the kind of grass will probably help lift our economic woes right now. It'll be a big surprise for everyone. :)

Congrats for UPV people and thanks for the updates Kirbs.

OT: Friends and fellow Ilonggos:

How's Philippines at the moment? I've heard from news this am that GMA declared a State of Emergency across the country. Gee, it's all over BBC News worldwide. I just checked Inquirer website but I cannot accessed anything at all.

I've seen the news in BBC as well, Weck. It's a bit disturbing though. Why a state of emergency? For what? The motive for declaring state of emergency by PGMA is very hazy. It's very politically-motivated in nature. We're not pre-empting something here, are we?

hi Kirbs ... lunch break lang ako so post lang ko di diutay sa aton thread.

Daks, thanks for posting the article .. it's an awakening for everyone back home. Personally, I'm not concerned sa news about sa complaint issue nga ini ... again (like Kirby), it's European style ... it's given na ... at least we have a thing to work on in the future ... hehehe. Ang reaction sang mga Pinoys back home is very predictable. I've read news about this matter sa Panay News and TNT and I couldn't find any reason that our local government should react dramatically. Besides, Iloilo can never compete with any European cities when it comes to cleanliness and honesty ... in Germany, Switzerland, Greece, etc ang trust nga ginahatag nila sa mga tawo are very high ... if you purchase a day travel ticket, etc. wala na may naga-check nga companies whether or not may ara ka gid man nga ticket or wala. You can ride the entire journey without nothing at all. ... it's your responsibility, and it's given na. I'm just glad nga may reaction kita nga nabati-an kesa wala na gid. So far, so good pa naman ah ... with so many other nationals liking our city ... hehehe. Ang pinaka-importante lang subong is that our city will not be included in their terrorist list kay amo ina ang pinaka-importante iya. Once the EU listed any city sa list nga ini, expect no European will going to visit the place ... it'll be printed sa tanan nga website nila across European continent.

I saw a billboard sa Smallville of proposed building and its render. The building is only 2-3 floors ... but the deisgn was nice. I didn't have the chance to see more project details because it was dark and my vision was very burry. There is also showroom under construction - Honda (i think) and some commercial buildings.

@overtureph: people have different likes and dislikes .. they've got different views and perspectives... and we should simply accept it the way they do ... you can't please everyone, you know? And definitely, no matter how hard we'll try to make their views to be as similar as what we have, we can never do that. But anyway, thank you very much for liking Iloilo. Of course, good memories of the place will lingers on FOREVER. Cheers !

‘Ro-ro should be tourist-friendly’

ILOILO City – The roll on-roll off (ro-ro) project launched in 2003 should be included in Western Visayas’ tourism master plan so that local government units passed by the ro-ro watercraft and buses to make their areas attractive to tourists and investors.

"There is an urgent need to upgrade and rehabilitate the water vessels plying the ro-ro routes from Manila to Batangas, Mindoro, Caticlan, Panay Island, then to Dumaguete and eventually to Mindanao," Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Salvador Sarabia Jr. said.

The present facilities of the ro-ro vessels under the Strong Republic Nautical Highway project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took a low mark recently from a government assessment team Sarabia led.

The government team composed of various agencies took on the ro-ro route recently to observe and assess the viability of the project, its tourism potentials and the security measures being implemented.

Sarabia, DOT Undersecretary for Security and Political Affairs, was tasked recently by President Arroyo to head the Panay Integrated Area Development Project in coordination with governors and other local government officials.

Sarabia said the ro-ro project launched by the President in 2003, should be included in the regional tourism master plan in order for the local government units passed by the ro-ro watercraft and buses to make their areas attractive to investors.

The tourism official said there is a strong potential for the ro-ro to attract tourists from Metro Manila down to Mindanao and vice versa.

There were reports that ro-ro vessels have degenerated into cargo vessels and hardly attract tourists anymore. Two vessels each of shipping lines Montenegro and Starlight are plying the ro-ro route from Metro Manila with four companies on transportation buses.

"One of the most important aspects of the ro-ro vessels in order to attract tourists must be cleanliness including its facilities, to be augmented by good port facilities and good roads," Sarabia said.

There is still room for improvement especially in cleanliness and comfortability and we must lure investors to the shipping industry, Sarabia added.

Along with him in the assessment tour were representatives from the Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, Air Transportation Office, Civil Aeronautics Board and Philippine Information Agency, among others.

The team observed that port facilities were comparatively world class and the security measures were strictly implemented, as they themselves underwent security checks while embarking on ro-ro vessels.

Sarabia said traveling through the ro-ro is one opportunity to discover the natural beauty of many places in the Philippines, which have not been artificially remodeled or made by human hands. It is also an option for many Filipinos so that they can enjoy the beauty of their own country and market their products in relatively cost-effective way.

Likewise, the team recommended that the road network along the route of the buses, especially in the provinces of Aklan and Capiz, be improved.

lalala ... hello people ... our country is so controversial again ... with the Leyte mudslide down to the very recent Coup attempt ... na naka-broadcast pa all over the world. Too many patients are asking me about these issues but apparently I have nothing more to tell at all except from what i've heard in the BBC news, too. Oh my, the Philippine once again took the political center stage with coup issue; and it is not very helpful at all when it comes to our economy. After few months of good peso and market performance, we're back again from where we started. The stirling pound came up for more than a peso more in exchange rate ... and even the dollar rose as well.

Starstruck 6 contenders visit Iloilo
By Mera Joy Aniolga

THE Philippines is the breadbasket of talent in Asia. Singing contests, dancing contests and all sorts of contests crowd Philippine Television. Parents would usually force their children once they see that the latter have the talent.

Let's face it, winning in such contest is a sure way of having fame and fortune all at once, it's like hitting two birds with one stone.

One of the most famous talent searches in the country is Starstruck, shown everyday in GMA, Channel 7. It gives young kids from all over the country a fair chance to showcase their talent and prove themselves in front of National TV.

Ever since its Season One, it gave rise to famous young actors and actresses such as Mark Herras, Jennilyn Mercado, Katrina Halili, Rainier Castillo, and many more.

Its no wonder, many would try their luck and audition for it. They shed blood, sweat, tears and more sweat in order to be part of it.

Unfortunately, not everyone can take part in this talent search. Only a chosen few are given the chance to bag up the prize as the ultimate Starstruck survivor of the season.

This time, six teenagers are contending for the title. From six, they will become four and then the ultimate survivor will be chosen.

Each of he contestants has his or her reasons as to why on earth they decided to join in such competition.

Iwa Moto for instance was so frank in stating that money is the main reason why she joined the contest. And mind you, she comes from a rich family, but this 17-year-old girl seems to view life in a practical way.

Jackie Rice, on the other hand, wanted badly to enter the world of show business.

Chuck Allie feels so blessed to be part of the Final 6, that alone makes him feel so lucky enough.

Even our very own Ilonggo pride Gian Carlos has his own agenda as to why he joined.

Money, Prestige, Fame or Ambition. Each of these contestants has his or her particular reason for joining. It's a good thing that they are using their own reasons to serve as their drive into developing further their talents thus becoming pride not only of their own family but as well as of the whole country.

.. but this is what I liked to read most ... helping our poor kababyans especially those who are homeless. Biskan gamay lang basta may naibulig kita sa ila.

Ilonggos volunteer to build homes for the poor

AS THE country commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution Saturday, Ilonggo supporters of the Gawad Kalinga (GK)in the city and province would gather to declare war against poverty.

The sites of the project are the GK Villages in barangays Sooc, Arevalo, Buntatala, Jaro in Iloilo City, and Loong, Concepcion for Iloilo province.

GK Partner Management Officer Peter Tiu said they are expecting hundreds of Ilonggo volunteers coming from the different sectors of society namely students, religious, educators, professional, business and local government units to join in their GK build and other activities.

The event also coincides with the formal launching of their GK 1MB (Isang Milyong Bayani).

Tiu said volunteers would help in the preparation for the construction of the homes in the GK Villages in barangays Sooc and Buntalala.

Volunteers in the GK Village in barangay Loong on the other hand would do some cleaning and beautification.

After the build, Tiu said volunteers will converge at the Jaro Plaza at 2:30 in the afternoon for the Martsa ng mga Bayani going to the Provincial Capitol.

This will be followed by a Commitment Ceremony and a mass to be officiated by Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo Jr.

The day's activity will be capped by a fellowship and a concert.

Tiu said GK 1MB is a massive call for every Filipino to volunteer in GK sites and to advocate the cause as GK targets to build 700,000 decent homes in 7,000 communities in seven years.

The campaign was initiated by the youth last September 17, 2005 that focuses on People Power Over Poverty.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said GK777 is the inspiration behind the housing program of government for the next six years. (PIA)

Anyways good luck na lng sa vacation niyo :D

And ... I found the page where the Total Room Capacity of Iloilo is posted:
http://www.wowphilippines.com.ph/dot/inv_bora.asp

(2004)

Rooms
Iloilo - 4,806
Boracay - 3,004
Bacolod - 503

The page is very confusing though ... sa "Location/Positioning" it referred to Iloilo as a province and to Bacolod as only Bacolod City pero sa "Tourist Attractions " Bacolod City's tourist attraction included the whole Negross Occidental

I think that the 4800++ rooms belongs to Cebu and that Iloilo only has about 2000 rooms. Bacolod has 1827 rooms as of 2003 I think. Since then several new hotels has opened. If that figure came from the DOT, they are in serious trouble because Bacolod is being marketed as a major convention center and they shortchanged Bacolod by saying that Bacolod only has 500++ rooms which is not enough to host a major conference that the current convention center at BCPH could accomodate.

Here are the figures for Bacolod:

I hope its a new Honda Dealer and not the same one from tabuc suba. Nissan has two dealers in Iloilo, one owned by the segovia's(jaro) and the other one owned by a chinese(lapaz). Medyo na abansehan na sang chinese si segovia kay very aggressive sila mag baligya...every prospective customer ginadul-ungan nila salakyan(test drive kuno) ti iban wala na gina uli...bakal na lang hehehe amo na bentaha kun damo dealers kay panami-nami sila hatag perks sa customers...isuzu i think has two sub-dealers (mabini st and molo) mitsubishi iloilo and bacolod is owned by avescor motors inc(tiu family)...also, i saw a new ford showroom in ungka..im not sure if this is a different dealer or nag transfer lang sila from their old site nga ara sa diversion...toyota iloilo and bacolod iya ni sang mga uy...kia showroom pa gle sa metropolis

so amo mga showrooms sa iloilo hehehe kagamay na nga daan sang dalan sa iloilo city...mahilig pa mga ilonggo sang suv's kag auv's...amo lang na notice ko lately

I don't know any Honda Cars near Robinson's Iloilo .... there's one near Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus ... and there's a Honda Cars Iloilo Showroom in Tabuc Suba, Jaro where we bought our car last year. About Honda Bacolod, I have no idea at all.

^^you're right @Mark and it will double and probably triple in about less than ten years as proposed hotel/condos and those that are u/c are huge and are high rises coz Cebu is eyeing Phuket and Bali's position... ;)
