spacewagon1 June 10th, 2009, 05:35 PM mahina ambi si Florete when it comes to mall development. Sayang. Kung ako sa iya, mapatindog ko mall that can compete with SM or Robinsons. Wala pa gid mall sa Iloilo iya nga dako (except lang abi sa Marymart) nga ang tag-iya Ilonggo gid.
spacewagon1 June 10th, 2009, 05:44 PM Wow!!! Carlitos is getting bigger... If it is getting competitive like Mang Inasal, it will be another Ilonggo's pride... If I am not mistaken, this store is owned by Mayor Jerry Trenas... Am I right?
Carlos is owned by the Trenas. Ang Carlitos iya sang Biscocho Haus naman iya. But I'm really happy to note that they are expanding. I hope they'll build bigger stores in other metrotowns.

Found it odd that there were a groups of young white women going in and out of Bluejay. Later realized that it was most probably nursing students from Truman University in the U.S.. They go here in Iloilo every year (tie up with WVSU) to be exposed to nursing education in the Philippines. They team up with students of WVSU and go with them on duty in WVSU-MC. Last Year, Nursing Students of WVSU (with support of the school) has attempted to go to the U.S. to reciprocate the "student exchange" but their Visa was denied by the embassy ... they're scared that the students might go TNT. It's such a shame really, it could have been a really great opportunity for them (pero matyag ko gusto lang nila matatakan ila Visa, haha).

Dumangas-Naluuyan port I think is the most preferred Ro-Ro port in southern Panay for those who are venturing out to Bacolod or Negros Occidental than the Muelle Loney port in the city. Travelling time to Bacolod is cut into half when disembarking/embarking from Dimangas instead of Muelle. Anyway it is after all the northern entrance of Iloilo Harbour. However, its disadvantage is that its more exposed to the open sea than Iloilo City ports have.

The first rainforest park in the city realized
By Kathy M. Villalon
The efforts to save the environment and to counter the effects of climate change is gaining ground with the realization of the first rainforest park in Iloilo City.
The park will rise on the 1,800-square-meter lot at the back area of the I. Arroyo Elementary School in Fundidor, Molo. The area used to be a swamp where mosquitoes breed when rainwater collects here, thereby increasing the chances of diseases being transmitted from one person to another. In order to solve this problem, put the land in good use and to preserve the environment, the Zonta Club of Iloilo City 2, embarked on the mini rainforest park.
The land is owned by the City Government, while the initial seedlings planted there were given by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO). The land fill was taken from the Iloilo Flood Control Project's excavated soil and transported by JS Layson Construction. The park's planning and landscape design was provided by Architect Sergio Penalosa.
“As we lay down the first seedlings for this forest park, we hope that we are also planting the seeds of environmental awareness and activism in the consciousness of all who are here today and especially the members of this community who will directly benefit from the presence of this mini forest in their midst,” said Mari Rose Cacho, chairperson of the Rainforest Project of Zonta 2 during the groundbreaking yesterday.
“Our vision is to grow several pockets of forests similar to this in our city and perhaps the whole province of Iloilo. It is a vision that we can achieve with the help of the government, private organizations and individuals, the community and all stakeholders in this case. Meaning, all of us, because in the end, we have only one earth to live in and we don't own it. We are simply borrowing it from our children,” she added.
Mayor Jerry Treñas pledged his continued support for the said project. He cited that typhoon Frank, which happened last June 21, 2008, was a product of climate change. He is quite happy that Zonta embarked on the creation of mini pockets of forests in the city, as an answer to this environmental problem. He hopes that the student in I. Arroyo Elementary School will see what is being done for the environment.
Trenas also took the opportunity to thank the club for its support on the Iloilo City Women's Desk even before his term as mayor has started. He gladly informed that Zonta ladies present that the vehicle they requested for the Women's Desk had been approved.
Sol Sucaldito, PENRO officer, told The News Today that what the Zonta 2 is doing is remarkable. “They are doing this not only for today but for the next generation. It's one of the aspects of sustainable development,” she said.
The mini rainforest park is not the only sight at the I. Arroyo Elementary School, which has a student population of 933. The school has a Science Park, Math Park, Herbal Park, a vegetable garden and an area for vermi composting.

^^ a good start, maayo pa guid if more of this type of park are made, especially in the central commercial business district. There is just too much urban blight.
good project indeed... for a greener tomorrow. ^^^^^^
hope Binay will stand down. I don't think he has the power to win anyway. Maybe he can support other candidate to make the opposition really strong. There's no point messing around. Besides, Makati City, with or without the aid of national government can stand on its own feet.
Pavia is gearing for more economic development. It can be seen everywhere in the municipality. Damo development sa Pavia especially housing projects. I'm sure with the flourishing of real estate industry in Pavia and Sta Barbara, more commercial establishments will relocate in the place in the very near future.
hehehe. daw namo guid lagaw mo sa rome ah. with to the 2010 elections, i would still prefer villar... he's my choice as of the moment.

The Port of Dumangas looks really promising. It's small though. Hopefully, they'll expand it to accomodate bigger ships and more sea exchanges in the future.
spacewagon1 June 10th, 2009, 10:53 PM Dumangas-Naluuyan port I think is the most preferred Ro-Ro port in southern Panay for those who are venturing out to Bacolod or Negros Occidental than the Muelle Loney port in the city. that's really good. I hope they'll transfer all exchanges from and to Bacolod via Dumangas Port. Also, I would suggest that some exchanges of Iloilo and Buenavista-Guimaras should be transferred to Dumnagas, too to give way to a better eco-port in the city for newer ships only, etc. Actually, they can even build a yatch club in Dumangas and more. Ugaling kay daw kulang man vision sing tag-dumala sang Port of Dumangas plus the fact that the coastal road looks dilapidated and pinabay-an na.
spacewagon1 June 10th, 2009, 10:58 PM no wonder it took some time for them to open ... the interiors are really great. Very well though of. I hope they do consider adding a smoking lounge, smokers are a big market for the coffee shop industry, you know (ofcourse, it has to be isolated from the rest of the space and with good ventilation).
i agree. Coffee and cigarettes go hand in hand most of the times. ha ha ha.:cheers::cheers::cheers:
spacewagon1 June 10th, 2009, 11:03 PM kung mahulat sila sang right time all the time, ti wala na eh. But I can sense that Florete is heavily invested in Bombo Radyo. Daw amo ini iya baby with small other things like pawnshops, banks, etc. How I wish he'll go bigger by investing in malls and real estate. How I wish that Florete will not be like Lopezes - kasayang gid nga dako. Right now, wala gid new generation nga Lopezes ang maayo sa negosyo. Tito Lopez' business ventures in Iloilo are mostly unsuccessful kay siya mismo wala man nabal-an kung paano magpadalagan. It's a sad, sad state. Hopefully, sa familia Florete maski isa lang tani, may ara man pero sa pagkabalo ko, daw wala gid.
spacewagon1 June 10th, 2009, 11:07 PM ^^^^ he he. I'm in Vatican almost every year. I can't get enough St Peter's Basilica and Sistine Chapel. I knew Rome by heart maski diin man ko ihaboy dira.
Regarding BlueJay sa Amigo, it looks really nice. Sosy ang dating. At least it complements with Gibi-Timberland shops in Amigo. Tani ang mga law-ay nga stores dira, ipang-islan na. Maybe, with the opening of BlueJay, next ta mabati-an ang opening naman sang BPO-call center relocator sa Amigo. We'll see.
irong206 June 11th, 2009, 01:44 AM that's really good.

BY TOOTS JIMENEZ JR.
A visit to Iloilo and Antique
I WAS with a group that visited Panay Island from Bacolod City taking Ocean Jet Ferry last month. It was a pleasant sea travel.
***
Moving about Iloilo City, we noticed that the traffic has tremendously improved. Mayor Jerry Treñas has the political will to move out-of-town jeepneys and buses out of the City Proper.
Mayor Treñas “graduates” next year. Who will likely take over the city government?
***
We drove to the new Iloilo Airport and were surprised. At the ticket sales area of the different airlines, there were no comfortable seats for people queuing for tickets. And we thought this airport is of international standards. Well…
Tired ticket buyers were already leaning on glass walls while waiting for their turn. A friend said it looked like a line of people buying from a siopao or burger kiosk.
Perhaps, expensive space rentals have forced airline companies to scrimp on picayune amenities such as lounging sofas for tired ticket buyers. That may be true, but we’re just wondering what happened to the fabled values of warmth and hospitality usually extended to airline clients.
***
We swung to San Jose, Antique. It was a smooth drive again, thanks to the asphalt roads built by the national government. But some portions of the highway obviously need upkeep. Where’s the budget?
***
In San Jose, we met Mayor Rony Molina, a young and energetic leader; former Barbasa Mayor David Daquilla, Atty. Wilfredo Reyes and Ariston Miñez Jr. of Standard Insurance.
San Jose is a progressing town. Its ambience is like that of Dumaguete City or Kabankalan City.
The town has its own Gaisano Mall (newly opened) and popular food chains like Mang Inasal, Jollibee and Chowking. Its plaza is clean. Tricycle is the main mode of transportation.
We stayed at the Trade Town Pension, Dalipe area.
People who haven’t been to San Jose probably think it is a “barriotic” place. Not so. It is a very busy capital town, bustling with activities./PN
steadyasweroll June 11th, 2009, 02:54 AM Commemorating typhoon Frank
The city government of Iloilo reportedly is preparing several activities to commemorate the first anniversary of the worst natural disaster ever experienced by the city – the massive floods brought by typhoon Frank June 21 last year. Who could not forget typhoon Frank anyway? Both the rich and the poor suffered its wrath. But maybe the best way to commemorate typhoon Frank is to check what the city has done one year after in terms of preparedness in times of disaster.
Apparently, we haven't heard that the city has acquired rescue facilities – like rubber boats – that can be used during floods. We also haven't heard of disaster preparedness training conducted among residents of flood prone areas particularly in Jaro District. The city also has not established a system by which to respond in times of disaster like Frank. There is now an early flood warning device installed in critical areas of the Jalaur river to monitor the rise of water, but even if there is a warning device if there is no system on how to respond to it then it will redound to nothing.
The showing of pictures of the havoc wrought by typhoon Frank to commemorate its anniversary will not help in any way. It will only bring back grim memories to those whose houses were submerged in water, to those whose kin went missing, to those who slept on their rooftop waiting for the water to subside, etc. Maybe the best thing our city officials could do in commemoration of the typhoon Frank disaster is to tell the people what they have done one year after.
wiljamesc1979 June 11th, 2009, 02:58 AM hope Binay will stand down.
It's better if all residential developments should be established outside the city like in Pavia, Sta. Barbara, Cabatuan and other nearby towns... Iloilo City is getting overcrowded, and it is not ideal if more and more subdivisions will sprout across the metropolis in the coming years...
The city is an economic power of Western Visayas therefore, it's preferably that investors should invest in mid rise or high rise buildings to accomodate growing number of call centers and other businesses wanted to invest here...

^^ IMO, I have this feeling that Santa Barbara would be the next big thing in the MIDC area. Vast lands are still untapped and because its flood-free and very accessible from the city and the airport, it has the advantage of its own.
i have the same intuition, too. I'm really rooting for Sta Barbara to the center of massive development in MIG area. Though Pavia and Oton is promising, Sta Barbara just presents some X-factor that could be considered at the edge to acquire more developments and investors.
Actually, almost every piece of land sa Sta Barbara may tag-iya na. The vastness of undeveloped lands nga makita ta subong will be a thing of the past once demand starts to rise. I can see condominiums, offices and hotels lining the streets of Sta Barbara. Its closeness to the airport has just given Sta Barbara an unrivalled edge for more businesses in the future.
We'll see.
Driving thru the Leganes-Sta. Barbara Road sometime last year, I noticed an on-going construction at the end of the road, right before turning right to Brgy. Lupa. What is being constructed, a bridge?
If you look at maps, the Leganes-Sta. Barbara Road ends at the Iloilo-Sta. Barbara Road in Bolong Este, but the road actually ends in Cabugao Norte, Sta. Barbara only. You have to turn right to Lupa, then go thru the town proper before you could go to the airport. If there is a bridge connecting Cabugao Norte with Bolong Este, travel to the airport from the Leganes area would be considerably shorter.
And if the bumpy Leganes-Sta. Barbara Road could be rehabilitated, it could serve as an alternative, even a main route for travelers from the Leganes-Jaro II area to the airport. We don't have to go thru the circuituous Tacas and Diversion Road routes to go the airport.
hoping they'll develop the area and concretized the road. It will surely spur the economy between Leganes and Sta Barbara.

I totally agree. Now the battle of towns in MIG including Cabatuan, Tigbauan and Zarraga is inevitable. Right now, it's a three-cornered fight between OTON, PAVIA and STA BARBARA. We'll see ...:banana:

maybe the owner wants to get something out sa iya land. Wala man gid siguro dako nga kuwarta to build a business so one way to earn is to lease the land usually 25 years ina siya bala mo. Hopefully, offices or hotel ang ipatindog dira.

same here. I would like to see a better and bigger city hall with wide parking space. Maybe they can look for better site around the city. Arevalo or Molo can definitely host the new City Hall. I'm sure it will help Arevalo to propel better economic stance once the new city hall will be relocated in their area. Magutok na ina dira sa Plaza Libertad. If anything better para sa Plaza Libertad, is a big hotel kay ara siya sa historical area but malapit siya sa dagat and Freedom Grandsand during Dinagyang Festival.
Dumangas Port has a huge potential in port business... It is another gateway to our province... In the future, I can't wait to see foreign vessels docked on that port...

Actually, the area between Ingore and Dumangas is a good place to establish a freeport. Its between the city and the entrance itself. One of the places that the provincial government is considering for the freeport area...
Anyway, sang buhi pa si Monfort, Coastal Road is a drag racers heaven...its really good...kag wala pa gawa potholes...subong lang ugaling kay wala na sya amo na natabu sa dalan. They haven't realized that the Coastal Road itself is linking two important ports and and alternative route for those who are going north.

Miag-ao would become a city IF it meets the requirements AND political will to do it so...I don't like to see one of our towns suffer the same fate as those 16 cities.
And most likely if the legislator would be supportive to the move of Miag-ao. Contra-Garin nga daan ang Miag-ao.
Also, one contributing factor for it would be an increase in student population. Once they started constructing the "other planned" establishments in the university, the town would be bustling as ever...like what UP did to Los Baños in Laguna.

better to downscale, than to scuttle the whole project... and besides, even if matapos ang power plant sa la paz, it could only augment the power of panay and the visayas until 2012... after that, there will be power deficiencies again. biskan mag 60 MW lang, dako na na nga bulig sa panay, especially sa power situation after 2012. and i believe, due to the rapid development of the MIGEDC component areas and of the rest of panay, we would still need DMCI's powerplant in the years to come... DMCI is actually not on the losing end here... it seems that, they just wanted to have an early "return of investments."
my hunch is, they're going to downscale the power plant... but with a capacity for expansion once the need arises. :)
i hope so, too. The development within the MIG area plus other municipalities like Cabatuan, Zarraga and Tigbauan is on the upswing. With more and more townships on the roll sa Iloilo, dako gid kinahanglan ta nga kuryente.
I hope with coal plants, other alternative sources of energy will also be studied as early as now. Basi Pavia, Sta Barbara and Oton pa lang, kulang na ang idugang nga kuryente from Mina. Let's just hope for the better.

habagatcentral1 June 11th, 2009, 08:21 AM same here.
They could've just acquired that GSIS lot across Plaza Libertad...but I think GSIS have plans on that lot that is why the city government didn't bother.
That GSIS lot is hellotta bigger than the current city hall site.
The Prince June 11th, 2009, 08:24 AM 5 West Visayas State University students join 'Bagong Doktor'
MANILA, Philippines - Five medical students of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) have been included in the “Bagong Doktor Para sa Bayan” program of the First Gentleman Foundation Inc. (FGFI).
They are Ma. Rowena Alcido of Iloilo, Christine Rio Bistis of Negros Occidental, Norie Grace Omamalin of Zamboanga Sibugay, Lotgarda Tayao of Baguio City, and Ana Lor-sha Villaber of Bohol.
They join 33 other new scholars of “Bagong Doktor” who were introduced to First Gentleman Mike Arroyo and the media in a simple luncheon in Malacañang.
They bring to 100 the total number of scholars of the “Bagong Doktor” program. Arroyo said the foundation will sponsor 50 more scholars.
Among the other new scholars are Jelvie Cabanes of Bulacan, Abigail Cuevas of Laguna, Edward Mark Estrella of Zambales, Mark Anthony Gomez of Naga City, Juan Paolo Granada of La Union, and Melrose Loazada of Camarines Sur.
Like their predecessors, the 38 new scholars will receive, among others, free tuition, fully loaded medical bags, free uniforms, monthly allowances for books and board and lodging, and board exam fee.
They do not have to pay back the FGFI after they finish their studies. The only requirement for them is to serve the poor in rural and depressed areas for at least two years.
The “Bagong Doktor” program is being run by the FGFI to help address the critical lack of doctors in the provinces. Funds for the program come from private donations to the foundation.

spacewagon1 June 11th, 2009, 08:28 AM Actually, the area between Ingore and Dumangas is a good place to establish a freeport.
The coastal road suffers a bad, bad fate with Biron. Its potential is really huge. Wala gid ini ma-explore maayo sang mga taga-Dumangas. This could be their vehicle to a more progressive town or becoming a city in the future.
Ang Estancia subong medyo naghulag na. No wonder their classification improved from 4th to 2nd class municipality. Soon, they'll be joining the magic 7 as first class towns of Iloilo. They just need to be consistent and empower their people and government. Kung matabo ini, another port city is on the plan for the future.
Once they started constructing the "other planned" establishments in the university, the town would be bustling as ever...like what UP did to Los Baños in Laguna.
i agree. Dapat indi lang nila ma-meet ang requirements. Dapat ang hitsura daw ciudad man. Just look at Passi, I don't think it looks like a city. :bash:

maybe they are planning to sell the lot to private investors. Mas maayo pa kesa baraton sila sang City Government. Hay ...

Actually, not only the coastal road is dilapidated, pati man ang mga roads going to Passi, going to Anilao and Banate, and Dmgs-Btac Nuevo na road kalain man. Daw ang dalan lng from the city to Barotac ang maayo-ayo. Paglampas mo sa banwa lain na. :bash::bash:
Napabay-an guid ka tam-an ang amon distrito. Hopefully the people of 4th district have learned their lesson... I'm pretty confident that whoever challenges the present congressman will have a big chance of winning the election.
rapuy June 11th, 2009, 08:49 AM Is it a government project? If it is, I'm hoping the project is not politically motivated considering its construction is near the election period...
Coliseums and cockfighting arena maybe frequented by politicians, but it should never be a priority for government projects.

so ano ang priority projects ni Biron? If all the roads sa iya district wala makay-o, ano na lang ina? I hope people in 4th districts have learned their lesson and will put everything in a right perspective by NOT VOTING BIRON for re-election. Sayang lang kung subong pa sila magpabakal sang ila boto. coffeebreak in general is mroe affordable
but when it comes to desserts you get your every centavos worth at bluejay while coffeebreak wins by a miel when it comes to drinks (mostly)
bluejay is more than a cafe its a deli and serves more than desserts so they have to have more ambiance and it shows

[/IMG]
for how long is their immersion here! that's a nice exposure for them! i hope next time, the efforts of WVSU to reciprocate the program by way of student exposure to the US setting would push thru.

the lead male character in this film is, if I'm not mistaken, the same person who is in some of those repeatitive commercials in some mang inasal branches here in MM.
Haldir07 June 11th, 2009, 01:07 PM i also remember 2 years ago there was also an exchange program for CPU and its Baptist sister-school in the US regarding CPU Nursing students to take their remaining 2 years of Related Learning Experience (RLE) or (Hospital-duty) in the US since the curriculum there is also somewhat similar to the curriculum of CPU. But the plan fizzled out, i dont know, i heard from Mam/Dean Somo and the other CI's that it requires a lot of time, paperwork, visa issues, students' safety, etc.. And at that time, talk of the present AHSE curriculum to be phased out in favor of a new 5-year curriculum might have been a factor too..
Pero sayang, sana andun nko ngaun sa tate ligid-ligid with the snow. At para na rin ma-expose mga Filipino nurses to the state-of-the-art hospital equipments and machines of US hospitals, if ever they go abroad.
iloilocitykid June 11th, 2009, 01:20 PM mahina ambi si Florete when it comes to mall development. Sayang. Kung ako sa iya, mapatindog ko mall that can compete with SM or Robinsons. Wala pa gid mall sa Iloilo iya nga dako (except lang abi sa Marymart) nga ang tag-iya Ilonggo gid.
The Atrium Mall, owned by the family Que. It's not up to the standards of SM but it's still packed with people everyday.
kung mahulat sila sang right time all the time, ti wala na eh.
I'd rather trust Injap Corporation as a new generation Ilonggo businessman. Lopezes aren't that good anymore (GMA-7 has a bigger net income than ABS-CBN), Florete couldn't go beyond Bombo Radyo and the Uygongco's (of Amigo) can't even make their 21st century style mall click. We'll see more in the future. :)

spacewagon1 June 11th, 2009, 02:26 PM The educator as a catalyst for change and development
By Rodolfo P. Gumabong
He wanted to become a farmer and revolutionize the rice production in the country. He thought then that since rice was the staple food of the Filipinos, intensifying the production of rice the scientific way in the rural areas will give more food to the hungry poor and good income to hardworking farmers.
So in the early 50s when his high school classmates enrolled in law and other hifalutin courses, Helmar Aguilar, the young green thumb from Passi, Iloilo, stepped into the portal of then Central Philippine College, Jaro, and like a number of budding young farmers, enrolled in agriculture.
Helmar was determined to become a model farmer so he scanned agriculture literature and books at the library and spent sleepless nights mastering the ABC of agriculture. He shunned night clubs and worldly entertainment but burned the midnight oil until finally when the college became a full-fledged university in 1955, he marched with flying colors to the university graduation rites and received his bachelor's degree in agriculture.
His fondest dream was to teach young farmers with the modern farming techniques, Helmar pursed further study and finished agricultural education in 1963. His boyhood dream of becoming a farmer teacher came true when he landed a career as a secondary school teacher at the Iloilo National College of Agriculture (INCA) in Lambunao, Iloilo and for seven years succeeded in producing A-1 farmers in the adjoining Lambunao towns. His success as an agricultural instructor earned for him an agronomy instructor at the Aklan Agricultural College and later at the Leon National Agricultural College and later at the Leon National Agricultural College where he produced top-producing farmers in the Aleosan area. Desiring to impart his vast agricultural knowledge with colleagues and farmers in Luzon, Helmar took a masteral degree in agriculture at the Araneta Universty in 1979 and finished his doctoral degree in education at Centro Escolar University in 1982.
On July 1, 1975, Education Secretary Lourdes Quisumbing appointed Helmar Aguilar to the National Agricultural School Superintendent of the Aklan Agricultural College and later became Aklan State University which he administered from that time on until his retirement in 2007 as President of the country's leading agricultural university according to the Education Secretary as “show case of today's Philippine education trilogy of goals, equity, quality and relevance.”
A multi-awardee for his exemplary, meritorious and commendable in the field of education as well as in other fields like agriculture, he was accorded honor and distinction as one of the first 23 Most Outstanding National Education Principals in the Philippines in 1969 by the Biographical Research Society of the Philippines and subsequently included in “Know Them”, a book of biographies titled “Directory of Outstanding Men and Women in the Philippine Government Service” published in the same year. A dynamic leader, he was honored for his outstanding contribution to and dynamic leadership in the Green Revolution Program in 1976; outstanding performance and exemplary leadership in the Integrated Alay Tanim and School Health Guardian program in Region VI in 1979 and 1980.
As moulder of the youth and as school administrator for more than 25 years, he participated in various special studies and trainings, Asian Institute of Management at Los Baños, at Suweon and Seoul, Republic of Korea, to Tagaytay City, Baguio City, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore and a dozen of trainings all over the country. A Fellowship Awardee of the Ford Foundation Asian Vegetable Research Development Center at Tainan, Taiwan, China. Dr. Aguilar has been a member of many socio-civic organizations in Iloilo, Aklan, etc. He has been a recipient of more than a dozen awards, certificates of appreciation and other model of honor that put him, “the Educator as a Catalyst for Change and Development,” the most outstanding alumnus in agriculture Central Philippine University ever had. Married to the former Patricia Quidato, daughter of former Sta. Barbara, Iloilo Mayor Cornelio S. Quidato, and the couple has only one son Helmar, Jr.
Helmar and his wife Patricia live in their modest home in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, while Helmar is still active in agricultural activity in Passi, Iloilo, where he actively manages with vigor and strength. Always well-dressed but no pompous, he oozes with elegant manliness and sexiness that heighten his hunkish litheness and agility. Still in his 75th, Helmar exercises daily.

spacewagon1 June 11th, 2009, 02:27 PM Iloilo to mark 111th Independence Day celebration with various activities
The city and province of Iloilo will mark the 111th celebration of the country’s Independence this year with various activities focusing mostly on addressing the problem of recession brought about by the global economic crisis starting on June 12 up to 14.
The three-day event will kick-off with a mass at 6:00 o’ clock in the morning at the San Jose Parish Church. This will be followed by a flag raising, the Panunumpa Sa Watawat, wreath laying ceremony, releasing of balloons, lighting of firecrackers and distribution of malunggay seedlings/cuttings at the Plaza Libertad.
Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) Steward in Western Visayas Secretary Raul Gonzales will give the Independence Message during the event.
After the Plaza Libertad activities, the awarding of employment contracts/appointments, scholarship certificate award/education voucher and livelihood grants under the CLEEP of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to identified beneficiaries by concerned agencies will be conducted at the Amigo Plaza Mall.
Amigo Plaza Mall is also the venue of the job and livelihood fairs that will highlight the three-day celebration.
The first day of the job fair is set for government hiring. Available are unfilled plantilla positions and vacancies for short term employment in government agencies such as the Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, amongst others.
The second and the third day of the job fair are for local and overseas employment, respectively.
Other activities on June 12 include lectures on plant propagation and flower arrangement with DA, housing clinique and orientation on AH1N1 virus.
Also, a free medical and dental service will be conducted on that day by the Department of Health, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and Office of the Presidential Adviser for Regional Development in various participating stores and malls in the City of Iloilo.
The three-day event will also feature one-stop shop pre-employment services, skills demonstration, diskwento, legal assistance and on-line registration for the Nurses Assigned in Rural Service (NARS) program, business registration and verification/ID generation.
The Department of Tourism 6 has also organized a 2-hour Cultural Presentation featuring Filipino Folk and Pop Dances woven into narration of how our forefathers fought for their freedom (Kagitingan) and preserved our heritage (Kagalingan) as pictured in our rituals, costumes, folk dances and livelihood (Kasipagan). This will be shown on June 11 as a pre-independence day entertainment and on June 12 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at SM City Activity Center in Mandurriao district. (PIA)

Jhy Ming Gonzales-Duenas, the designer
http://thenewstoday.info/2009/06/11/bravo.for.tinubkan.jpg
Tinubkan is one of the most inspiring fashion shows I've ever attended. I could say that the art of the panubok (traditional embroidery of the Panay Bukidnon women), can actually be incorporated in our modern clothing to produce a really wearable and beautiful creation.
What also made the merger of the old and the new exciting was the fact that it was artist Jhy Ming Gonzales-Duenas' first fashion show and her designs were impressive.
Her appeal is simple. Each local government unit should carry the panubok in their uniforms in order for the Panay Bukidnon women to continue with their livelihood.
The fashion show was quite a success, as its aim was accomplished.First, the Filipino Heritage and Festival Institute (FHFI) pledged P10,000 for Lola Conchita Gibaliga's cataract treatment. Lola Conchita is one of the elders of the Panay Bukidnon and considered as an expert in the panubok.
Second, the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) invited them to display the collection at the agency's building as well as put up a cultural show that will help sell the Panay Bukidnon's indigenous products.
Third, Gonzales-Duenas revealed that some private individuals pledged textiles, threads and school supplies for children in the mountains.
“Two prominent political figure in the province of Iloilo pledged two sewing machines. Because of the show we have tapped other non-government organizations to help with the medical mission, eye and dental care. Importantly the office of the NCIP Region VI and VII made a commitment to have their set of uniforms next year made and embroidered by the Panay Bukidnon women,” she said.
“Some of the collection were already reserved others were bought. The proceeds will be used for another project such as the revival of musical instruments and travel exhibit. Kultura KUsog Ko. Inc. will be bringing cultural exhibit materials to the four provinces of Central PAnay, in order to gain support and cultural awareness to these provinces. First stop is of course the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. Next is the province of Antique, Boracay, Aklan and Roxas, hopefully,” she added.
Gonzales-Duenas is the president of Kultura KUsog Ko. Inc.

Hubo, formerly known as Guijo Dueñas, proved that art by Ilonggos can pass the discriminating eye of the Manila critics.
Hubo held a very successful Inner Beauty exhibit at the Big and Small Art Gallery, at the SM Megamall, Manila. Ilonggos who were in attendance was led by Department of Tourism 6 Director Edwin Trompeta. Also present were Atty. Robert Nomar Leyretana, chief of the Legal Department of the Land Registration Authority Central Office, Col. Jose Molave Duenas of the PNP National Headquarters and Dr. Joel Mendez, owner of the gallery.
“The mall goers stopped to look, got mesmerized and entered the exhibit area. Then, people were already flocking the place,” Hubo said. Well, it's normal for Hubo's works to elicit shock and awe. After all, it's the first time that such a concept of flesh or inner body parts was presented in an exhibit.
A critic left a comment on the guestbook and it goes like this: “Although the collection is a series of tense movements, suspended temporarily, otherwise in eternity, all seems at peace. There's a sense of contrast, in essence, considering the presence of roses, frailty and delicateness and violence of human anatomy. The artist is able to balance the two, just like yoga.”
One critic asked Hubo want he really wanted to show – the tantra (practice of yoga) or the anatomy? He said, “Both, because the tantra is the practice while the anatomy shows the application, exactness of the muscles, bones and the internal organs.”
To Hubo, congratulations!

no wonder these two are present here despite not being of typical cost range for the ilonggos before
whyte June 11th, 2009, 08:02 PM we'll see how it goes. I don't have a feeling that there will be a local businessman in the city to go and invest heavily on mall development. Apart from Iloilo Supermart's Que, whom their stores a big but not as big as SM, daw wala na gid.
actually if MARYMART can be renovated and given its full potential it could become a very good mall.
before it was "THE MALL" now "that mall" na lang.
sayang ang marymart.it could do well as a 5 story mall-hotel-office complex givens it location pero it just stays as it is, a dilapidated run down mall

spacewagon1 June 12th, 2009, 12:18 AM Iloilo town shows why it is child-friendly
THE country’s most child-friendly municipality proved why it deserved to earn such tag when it staged the finals of Larolympics.
New Lucena, an agricultural, fourth-class municipality in Iloilo, was overtaken by children and youth who paraded the streets and showed adults and guests the true virtues of sportsmanship, love for heritage and team-playing.
Larolympics is an Anak TV initiative that filtered down to the country’s most child-friendly towns and cities like New Lucena.
It aims to bring the Filipino child outdoors where he/she can enjoy fresh air while stretching muscles, away from sedentary activities such as watching television and playing computer games.
It was easy to convince New Lucena Mayor Liecel Mondejar-Seville to adopt Larolympics as a town project. She made certain that the children in her town took centerstage, organizing the intramurals among the barangays, administering the games and staging the innovative torch lighting and balloon releasing ceremonies.
The local Sangguniang Kabataan engineered much of the activity and succeeded in showing what stuff today’s youth is made of.
New Lucena therefore became the first Larolympics town to stage its finals. The media came in full force to support the lady mayor and her constituents.
Drinks courtesy of Chocquik and MyJuiz literally flowed and there were candies galore from Columbia’s.
Even actor Ricky Davao took time out from his busy showbiz schedule to grace the affair and play with the kids.
Anak TV handed out colorful certificates to the child participants in the chikiting (7 to 10 years old) and bagets divisions (11 to 14 years old) as well as medals and handsome trophies to the winners and to the kids picked as the Most Valuable Players.
“What makes the entire Larolympics scheme unique and worthy of national attention is the fact that it is shaping our kids to delight in time-honored streetgames like patintero, piko and tumbang preso,” says Anak TV trustee Elvira Yap Go who flew in from Manila with Secretary General Mag Cruz Hatol and media representatives to witness the championship games.
For her part, Mayor Seville is enthused by the innovative twists in the games.
Patintero, played by boys and girls, was skewed to make child players “guard” their rights as children.
Tumbang Preso, a rowdy boys’ game, featured a spirited collective desire to “tackle” a stubborn tin can emblazoned with symbols of drug, tobacco and alcohol use.
Piko, distinctly a girls’ game, had a moon and quadrants that represented lofty ambitions.
“The Larolympics is an idea that should have been hatched decades ago. The games are simple and easy to stage, requiring hardly any budget and can be played by any child from any social, educational and religious background. Most significantly, it is enjoyable and does not require uniforms or sophisticated venues. Height is not even a factor, unlike basketball and other sports,” said Mayor Seville.
Rains did not dampen the spirit of the crowds. Neither did it douse the enthusiasm of the kids who found in the well-loved games of piko, patintero and tumbang preso a reason to stretch their muscles and socialize, things that watching too much television nor playing computers cannot offer.

spacewagon1 June 12th, 2009, 12:19 AM City waste board OKs sanitation regulations
By Lydia C. Pendon
The Iloilo City Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) has approved June 11 the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) on the implementation of the environment and sanitation code.
The environment and sanitation code empowers barangay captains to issue citation tickets to litterbugs in the city. The code also imposes penalties on violators.
Marissa Segovia, SWMB co-chair, said Mayor Jerry P. Treñas will soon issue two executive orders (EO) relative to the code.
The first EO is on the confirmation of the code’s IRR while the second EO pertains to the deputization of 842 persons designated as barangay sanitation officers.
Treñas is currently in Boston, Massachusetts, USA to attend the GK Global Summit. He will return Iloilo June 17.
Segovia said the IRR is mainly focused on pertinent sections of Title 7 of the Iloilo City Environment Code of 2004.
The IRR is expected to address the “effective and efficient enforcement of the environmental code by laying down the powers and creation of sanitation officers especially in the barangays as well as the adoption of a systematic and comprehensive procedure to be observed upon the issuance of citation tickets.”
The rules also cover the obligations of the stakeholders and the penalties imposed in case of violations.
The acts prohibited in the code include littering on the streets, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds and other public places; urinating, defecating, or spitting in public places; painting, inscribing or posting of graffiti on public or private buildings, walls, fences and similar places; vandalism of public or private property; failure to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of comfort rooms in public establishments; and failure to maintain the cleanliness pf premises surrounding public or private buildings or vacant lots.
Other covered acts are failure of owners and occupants to clean their surrounding premises approximately 3 to 5 meters radius of the household dwellings; failure of the lessors, lessees, proprietors or administrators as wells as semi-government, non-government and government institutions; and periodic clean-up or at least once a month, preferably on the last Saturday of the month shall be the responsibility the barangay captains.
Drivers of public utility vehicles must also provide waste cans. Drivers who fail to police passengers who violate the code will be fined.
Also liable are persons who fail to store and discard debris and waste materials during the scheduled time of collection of garbage at drop-off collection points.
The IRR penalizes violators P500 for the first offense, P750 for the second offense, P1,000 for the third offense and conviction by the court for subsequent offenses.
Proceeds from the collected fines from the citation ticket shall accrue exclusively to the barangay or proportionately to the barangays in a cluster group where the violation was committed.

spacewagon1 June 12th, 2009, 12:24 AM Mega job fair marks 111th Independence Day
Thursday, June 11, 2009
GOVERNMENT agencies and the private sector based in Iloilo City join hands in celebrating the 111th anniversary of Philippine Independence that focuses on a mega job fair to be held at the Amigo Terrace Hotel.
The regional activity is part of the national Kalayaan Mega Job Fair spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) held simultaneously in 19 cities nationwide on June 12-14, 2009.
In Iloilo City, an estimated 27,000 jobseekers are expected to apply for the positions and fill up vacant positions in the national and local governments, as well as in local and overseas employment.
Dole reported that on Friday, June 12, a total of 176 unfilled plantilla positions will be offered by nine government agencies based in Iloilo City while 13 government agencies will open 975 vacancies for short-term employment.
The Western Visayas quota is part of the 50,000 emergency employment vacancies, including unfilled plantilla positions, covering professional and technical workers and other jobseekers. The unfilled plantilla positions are offered to applicants with civil service eligibility.
Emergency employment for not more than six months in government agencies in 2009 is allowed under Executive Order 782, which provides for the temporary filling up of vacancies in the government using 1.5 percent of MOOE.
On Saturday, June 13, the private sector's 21 companies here will conduct job hiring for 996 job openings for local employment. The second day of the job fair is part of the national target offering some 70,000.
The third day, June 14 job fair will feature 19 recruitment companies based in Western Visayas offering a slot for 17,705 job seekers as part of the national offering of 50,000 sea-based and land-based overseas employments.
The Iloilo activity is part of the national event that offers 170,000 job vacancies across industries nationwide participated by both national and local governments and the private companies. (Lydia C. Pendon)

true blue ilonggo June 12th, 2009, 01:36 AM kung mahulat sila sang right time all the time, ti wala na eh. Hopefully, sa familia Florete maski isa lang tani, may ara man pero sa pagkabalo ko, daw wala gid.
kanyang kanyang forte na eh... florete started also with agriculture, and diversified into the corporate world. maybe when the economy of iloilo gets stronger, our local businessmen will have no other choice but to expand and diversify. or else, lamunon sila sang mga dalagko nga investors coming from the outside. :)
indi man ina linya ni chusuey kag sang mga florete ang mall business...si florete ya bantog gid nga bagit hehehe on the other hand, the other florete, marcelino, i think owns the most number of sbarro franchises in the country(w/c includes the outlet sa MOA nga pirmi puno) and i heard he acquired the whole dulcinea company...and SM can never put away Iloilo Supermart...indi na pwede mag bagsak presyo si SM hehehe
nice to know... that a florete owns the most number of sbarro franchises in the country... ang sbarro sa sm delgado, kay sino na? i remember, is na sa pinaka una nga sbarro branch outside manila mo.
aside from Florete daw wala naman dako gid nga businessman sa Iloilo. Uygongco naman sa construction sila. I think Lopez pero lawlaw si Tito. No wonder UI was sold to Phimna Group. Ang iya plan dira lapit sa terminal sang Christ The King, wala man madayon. What a waste!
damo pa man dalagko nga businessmen sa iloilo, galing puro low profile... kay basi makidnapan. ara man si alfonso tan who i think is in the construction business also, ang mga juantongs nga ga compete ila products against mandaue foam to name the few...
The Atrium Mall, owned by the family Que. It's not up to the standards of SM but it's still packed with people everyday.
strategic ambi ang location sang atrium... with regards to abs-cbn, i think they were able to post a 2 billion profit in the first quarter, more than what the company expected. GMA-7 may be leading in metro manila, but abs-cbn leads the total number of viewership nationwide. so, i think abs-cbn still has the edge over GMA-7...
lewdsaint June 12th, 2009, 01:43 AM true, mangkuta abi si tyo tagoy kung damol na iya kibol sa tuhod....hehehe! galuhod sya kung mag-arado siguro. lol:lol:

A senior college student based in Iloilo bagged P25,000 and a scholarship grant for winning first place in a United Kingdom-sponsored essay writing contest that focuses on trade issues in line with the worldwide celebration of the UK World Trade Week.
Mark Wilfred Popioco, a senior broadcasting student of the West Visayas State University in Iloilo bagged first place with his essay entitled, “Of my Host Sister's Smiles and Erning's Job." Meanwhile, BS Communications Technology freshman Jose Eos Trinidad of the Ateneo de Manila University placed second his piece entitled, "My Part of the Trade," while third place went to Erick Xerxes Maquilang of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in General Santos City, South Cotabato for his essay, "Security Versus Opportunity." Maquilang is on his 5th year in BS Accountancy.
All three will receive a scholarship grant from the Universal Access for Competitiveness and Trade (U-ACT), the advocacy think-tank arm of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) to the modules run by the Philippine Learning Centre for Trade and Investment Policy (PLACE). Popioco will likewise receive P25,000 cash prize while it will be a cash prize worth P10,000 and P5,000 for Trinidad and Maquilang, respectively.
PLACE is the first private sector-led policy and training center in Southeast Asia. Its program covers various training to chief executive officers, trade personnel, specialists and advocates on trade policy, trade agreements and negotiations strategy and techniques through the application of specialized or customized, certified business and trade curriculum or modules on trade policy and trade agreements.
The center will start its supplemental courses on June 22 and 23 and will run until February 2010. It will run a weeklong course program for chief executive officers and trade personnel this September.
United Kingdom’s World Trade Week, being celebrated from June 8 to 12 this year, underscores the role of global trade in reducing poverty.
"World Trade Week UK is an annual platform for a wide range of regional, national and international activities to demonstrate the vital importance of trade and the choices that business, policy makers and communities can make to ensure continued global growth, jobs and stability. This is especially important during these difficult economic times," British Ambassador to the Philippines Peter Beckingham said.

junnjun013 June 12th, 2009, 03:42 AM Mega job fair marks 111th Independence Day
Thursday, June 11, 2009
(Lydia C. Pendon)

SamwiseGamgee June 12th, 2009, 07:32 AM actually if MARYMART can be renovated and given its full potential it could become a very good mall.
before it was "THE MALL" now "that mall" na lang.
sayang ang marymart.it could do well as a 5 story mall-hotel-office complex givens it location pero it just stays as it is, a dilapidated run down mall
Marymart was developed piecemeal. First came "the inner mall", which is the part now with the mini-atrium and the "tambayan". That building had a fairly wide open parking space fronting Valeria. That parking space used to be the "entertainment center" of the mall, where live concerts were held. I remember the jam-packed free concerts of Tunog Amakan, Nelson del Castillo, Cezar Barita, and the other Ilonggo artists of that time there. :)
Then that parking space was converted into what we see today as the frontage of the mall. La Sallette Building across the street was rebuilt as the mall's extension, and a multi-level parking space was provided on top of the old open parking.
Those were the days my friends... Daw kanta ba. :D

GMA News and Public Affairs wins three USIFVF awards
Thursday, June 4, 2009
02:17 PM
GMA Network's News and Public Affairs won three awards in the 2009 US International Film and Video Festival (USIFVF).
Reporter's Notebook's "Lunok-Droga (Filipino Drug Mules)" won the Silver Screen Award in the Social Issues Production-Documentary Category. To film the documentary, host Jiggy Manicad traveled to Kuala Lumpur to witness the sting operation jointly conducted by Philippine and Malaysian police to arrest members of a Nigerian drug syndicate. Manicad also had the opportunity to interview the Filipino drug courier used to bring the syndicate down. Co-host Maki Pulido, on the other hand, tackled the worsening problem of drug abuse in the Philippines.
Another Reporter's Notebook documentary, "Pinays for Export (Filipinas for Export): The Southeast Asian Sex Trafficking Trail" received a Certificate for Creative Excellence in the same category. The episode featured the world's third most profitable organized crime: human trafficking, with victims falling mostly into sexual slavery. For the first time on Philippine television, the trail of trafficked Filipinas from the Philippines, to Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macau was traced.
Jay Taruc's documentary "Batang Langoy (Child Swimmers)" won for I-Witness a Certificate for Creative Excellence also in the Social Issues category. It documented the struggle of the Magalumbi island children, who swim a two-kilometer stretch everyday just to be able to go to school. Being unable to bring home their books, the children bury these under the sand and in the morning rush to do their homework before going to school.
The USIFVF was founded in 1967 and is one of the world's leading international events devoted exclusively to recognition of outstanding Business, Television, Documentary, Educational, Entertainment, Industrial and Informational productions.
I've seen this one. It first featured sa local GMA CHANNEL 6 diri then na pick up sang NAT'L NEWS and sent their reporter to feature it for I-WITNESS.

whyte June 12th, 2009, 07:04 PM re: Amigo .. dira gid ko sa imo. Sa CR pa lang class na class na .. lol. I really hope that more branded tenants will occupy spaces in Amigo. Medyo indi lang sanay ang Ilonggo magsulod sa mga high-end shops. Maybe with the influx of them sa Iloilo, things will change a bit. :)
hehehe tu-od gid man class gid nga CR pati ganin robinsons kag sm city nag renovate man bala mo. yup hope they will bring in more brands. actually nasanay ang mga Ilonggo sa OLD AMIGO nga daw ukay ukay so medyo tahapsila magsulod kay lain gid ya ang ambiance. now that bluejay is already open and its beside one of the main entrances mas lalo na gid mag2 isip ang kalabanan.
re: redistricting drama ni Gonzales :lol::lol::lol: daw sinampal niya man ang Batanes. To each his own. Ginakulbaan lang ina siya nga kung indi ma-aprubahan ang second district sang Iloilo City, sigurado gid nga wala palakadtuan ang iya anak kay pierde gid siya kay Trenas maski diin ibangga. Even his mayoral post duha-duha pa kay people of Iloilo City will not support him especially now nga wala na siya puwesto sa gobyerno.
actually he blames cong. villafuerte?? and noynoy aquino for this mess. the cong. from bicol wanted to divide camarines norte/sur? into two tapos nakit-an ni noynoy na its the districtof datu arroyo.never got into the details of that basta daw amo ina.
Kung matabo nga mapierde sila sa ciudad, indi lang sampal ang naaguman nila, ginlasak pa sila sang tawo sa ciudad sang Iloilo. So I guess he is trying his best and pushing hard for 2 districts. Just imagine kung mag-separate si Trenas sa ila duwa, kaluluoy gid sila.
though its political but everyone agrees, well almost, na this will be much better for the city as a whole.
i should still day na raul sr still strongly connected sa city officials anbd brgy capts but can tat be translated directly to votes by 2010? lets wait and see. and he said if he wins didto lang sya kuno maopisina sa may Calumpang area kay wala pa man city hall
i don't think nga nahadlok sila, nahuya lang or di lang sanay. Gusto ta iya pag nagsulod, mabakal dayon. And kung indi man lang magbakal, indi na lang.:lol::lol:
nahadlok = nahuya :lol:
as explained above.
Gani, pero ga hesitate kuno si Trenas mag bonggo sa Gonzales kay may alas kuno si "The King" contra kay trenas. and daku ang kabalaslan ni trenas kay raul sr sa iya nga political career.
but trenas would win vs raul jr for congress IMO.
basi isa pa ina sa mga pang blackmail ni gonzales kay jerry  ang pavia housing
grabe ang pamulitika gid man BUT mas grabe ang sa 2nd district esp between SYJUCOS and PAVIA MAYOR CADIO GORRICETA

Early 90's gid bala nag open ang INNERMALL. I used to confused it sa mezzanine sang old sm delgado kay almost te same time sila nagbukas.
i can still remember walking across that parking lot and entering the mall which at that time the "place to see and be seen". daw amigo pa ma lang abi ang "mall" sa Iloilo.
tough wala gid ako nakatan-awsang concerts dira sa tubang hehehe.that time was the also the "golden age" (forgive my terminlogy) of ilonggo music. daw matak-an ka lang sang mga pop ilonggo music kay sikat gid sa city and province.
It's the old Supermart building plus part of Marymart arcade (ang ara bala ang Nat's, Foodwealth, etc) ang ginhimo nga extension not la salette, in im not mistaken.
sayang if only we have pics to share sa old marymart

wala pa, they are my friend's pics.
whyte June 12th, 2009, 07:29 PM kanyang kanyang forte na eh... florete started also with agriculture, and diversified into the corporate world. maybe when the economy of iloilo gets stronger, our local businessmen will have no other choice but to expand and diversify. or else, lamunon sila sang mga dalagko nga investors coming from the outside. :)
compete or "die" ang business at this trying times. but despite all these, it seems that udner the last two different mayors lang gid nag improve ang Iloilo economy
nice to know... that a florete owns the most number of sbarro franchises in the country... ang sbarro sa sm delgado, kay sino na? i remember, is na sa pinaka una nga sbarro branch outside manila mo.
a very unlikely yet profitable venture.coem to think of it. mas mahal pa sya sa shakeys per person pero it thrived sa old sm delgado foodcourt pa. addicted gid ako sa ila nga garlic bread  until now very limited angsbarro bracnehs if im not mistaken mostly in manila pa
damo pa man dalagko nga businessmen sa iloilo, galing puro low profile... kay basi makidnapan. ara man si alfonso tan who i think is in the construction business also, ang mga juantongs nga ga compete ila products against mandaue foam to name the few...
 tsakto gid kag conservative man gyapon ang tawo dri in general.but i do hope they'll come out of their "shell"
strategic ambi ang location sang atrium... with regards to abs-cbn, i think they were able to post a 2 billion profit in the first quarter, more than what the company expected. GMA-7 may be leading in metro manila, but abs-cbn leads the total number of viewership nationwide. so, i think abs-cbn still has the edge over GMA-7...
i rememebr that place before when it was fenced by galvanized iron sheets ang puro mga cogon pa.i thought na it would be a good place for a mall and it did become one.
your stats are wrong re: abs and gma
1ST PROFITS
GMA 501 MILLION
ABS 191 MILLION
ang 2 billion is their sales.both networks can achieve sales of over a billion per month. around 200,000 pesos per 30 second commercial ang charge nila sa primetime.
in this case viewership IS NOT convertible to cash.
true abs cbn leads in surveys in the visayas and mindanao by a large margin. but it is still the megamanila area that matters most to the advertisers so even though no matter how abs cbn claims to be number 1 nationwide on average ratings, gma still got the ads. gma has 5000 minutes more ads in the last quarter ;)

All three will receive a scholarship grant from the Universal Access for Competitiveness and Trade (U-ACT), the advocacy think-tank arm of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) to the modules run by the Philippine Learning Centre for Trade and Investment Policy (PLACE). true blue ilonggo June 12th, 2009, 10:51 PM ah ok... wala ka sang photo sang blue jay amigo branch from the outside whyte? ^^
true blue ilonggo June 12th, 2009, 11:02 PM Marymart was developed piecemeal.
hehehe. heard of those concerts though, i wasnt able to attend any of it. pero, damo guid man mga ilonggo rock songs sang una. the glory of ilonggo rock music.
compete or "die" ang business at this trying times. but despite all these, it seems that udner the last two different mayors lang gid nag improve ang Iloilo economy
a very unlikely yet profitable venture.coem to think of it. mas mahal pa sya sa shakeys per person pero it thrived sa old sm delgado foodcourt pa. addicted gid ako sa ila nga garlic bread  until now very limited angsbarro bracnehs if im not mistaken mostly in manila pa
 tsakto gid kag conservative man gyapon ang tawo dri in general.but i do hope they'll come out of their "shell"
i rememebr that place before when it was fenced by galvanized iron sheets ang puro mga cogon pa.i thought na it would be a good place for a mall and it did become one.
your stats are wrong re: abs and gma
1ST PROFITS
GMA 501 MILLION
ABS 191 MILLION
ang 2 billion is their sales.both networks can achieve sales of over a billion per month. around 200,000 pesos per 30 second commercial ang charge nila sa primetime.
in this case viewership IS NOT convertible to cash.
true abs cbn leads in surveys in the visayas and mindanao by a large margin. but it is still the megamanila area that matters most to the advertisers so even though no matter how abs cbn claims to be number 1 nationwide on average ratings, gma still got the ads. gma has 5000 minutes more ads in the last quarter ;)
hahaha. grabe ka whyte ba... daw taga GMA ka kung mag present sang stats ah. kapuso vs. kapamilya?:lol::lol: di bale, maka cnn kag bbc ko ya. hahaha.
SamwiseGamgee June 13th, 2009, 03:22 AM I can really visually imagine everything.Actually I also have seen that transformation.
It's the old Supermart building plus part of Marymart arcade (ang ara bala ang Nat's, Foodwealth, etc) ang ginhimo nga extension not la salette, in im not mistaken.
sayang if only we have pics to share sa old marymart
hehehe. heard of those concerts though, i wasnt able to attend any of it. pero, damo guid man mga ilonggo rock songs sang una. the glory of ilonggo rock music.

Iloilo student tops UK essay contest
By MADEL R. SABATER
June 11, 2009, 8:27pm

Iloilo, Davao new BPO hotspots

Close this ILOILO CITY – An international business magazine has named the cities of Iloilo and Davao as two of the world’s new hotspots for business process outsourcing (BPO) investments.
BusinessWeek magazine said Iloilo and Davao were among the 31 cities that were being eyed by BPO investors due to economic and political pressures to outsource work to lower-cost cities, said an article posted on its website last May 2.
While widespread layoffs in Western countries, especially the United States, have afforded global outsourcing providers highly skilled workers to beef up their presence in the United States, many firms were still looking to invest in less costly cities in South America, Europe and Asia, according to the article.
BusinessWeek is a global source of business news with more than 4.8 million readers weekly in 140 countries.
The magazine cited a report released in February by KPMG, a global network of professional services firms, which said the two Philippine cities were rapidly emerging to compete with traditional BPO destinations, such as Bangalore, Chennai and Shanghai.
In its “Exploring Global Frontiers” report, KPMG said that as traditional BPO locations rapidly approach saturation point, “there was a sizable opportunity for these new and emerging locations to swallow up a large proportion of the new outsourcing work, which the credit crisis was apparently creating.”
Iloilo was cited for its large talent pool owing to a number of educational institutions and strong English skills of the population.
The report noted that Iloilo City was the educational hub in the Philippines’ Western Visayas region with six universities, more than 30 colleges, and technical schools producing more than 17,000 students graduates annually.
It said the talent pool was suitable for voice-based operation of call centers due to populace’s diction and cultural similarities with the United States.
The city’s IT-BPO industry has also significantly grown. There are seven BPO firms in the city, with 2,600 employed in 2007-2008.
The IT-BPO services in the city include call centers, software development, medical and other data transcription, animation and digital content, and engineering design, according to the report.
Davao was also cited because of its English-speaking talent pool with many cultural ties to the United States owing to its large number of universities and colleges.
Some companies were setting up training centers in Davao, which were also being used to train the companies’ employees from other operating centers in the country, the KPMG report said.

spacewagon1 June 14th, 2009, 12:19 PM Iloilo City gov’t targets tourism establishments without permit
ILOILO City – The City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) is checking tourism establishments here if they have the necessary tourism permit.
Inspections are being done from Tuesday to Thursday.
“Tourism permit is important because it signifies that restaurants, travel agencies, beauty and wellness centers, food outlets, cellular phone services and other establishments are ready to serve the needs of visitors,” Tourism Officer Benito Jimena said.
A local ordinance mandates business establishments to secure a tourism permit from the CTDO.
Renewal costs P750, with P500 as licensing fee and P250 for surcharge. New registration is at P1,765, with P1,265 for registration and P500 fee for licensing.
The CTDO expects to collect more than P1 million from non-compliant establishments. Last year, they collected almost the same amount.
“I actually challenged my personnel to surpass or even double the amount, to help the revenue collection efforts of the city,” said Jimena.
Last week, tourism inspectors went to 205 stores inside Robinsons Place Iloilo. A total of 117 have permits, 57 are up for renewal, and 31 are new stores that have yet to apply for tourism permit. (PNA)

Some companies were setting up training centers in Davao, which were also being used to train the companies’ employees from other operating centers in the country, the KPMG report said.

whyte June 14th, 2009, 07:03 PM Some info regarding the REDISTRICTING BILL as seen over CABLESTAR TV'S "Counterstrike" wit Chief pres. Legal Counsel RAUL GONZALES SR.
* Sen Noynoy Aquino "promised" to tackle te bill last June 3, 2009 but it never happened. He being the Chairman of the Local Gov't Committee in the Senate.
* Days after Gonzales met with Vice Chairman of teh said committee, Sen. Chiz Escudero and asked him about the real status of the bill. he said "still there's a big chance if the Senate President himself would intervene" so to speak.
* It turns out that this is a political matter, but "party-based". Sen. Aquino is sitting on all these redistircting bills, not only for Iloilo City but almost all thatwould AFFECT the status of the LIBERALS.
* Gonzales cited the example of Camarines (Norte/sur-can tbe sure), it is also sitting in Aquino's office since it will affect Cong. Datu Arroyo's area who is a liberal.
* Now comes Iloilo City, no other but te big man Frank Drilon is aside from being vocally opposing the bill, he is working through his connections especially with the Liberal Party to oppose this splitting of the city into to two districts.
Other infos
* It looks like The King would be the man to beat in the 2010 Mayoral post since as of now, all the brgy. captains in Molo have alread petitioned him to run.And that includes the brother of another mayorable Jed Mabilog.
* Also it cant be denied that Gonzales has this influence over other districts esp in the vote rich Jaro.
* But only time can tell wat will happen to Iloilo politics.
Here's another interesting program to watch on local TV. Its on IBC12 and replayed on Cablestar. Its called iHAYAG.
* It seems that Mayor Gorriceta of Pavia had been on a media mileage ever since his "fight" with the Syjuco's began with that Dakal-Dakal road months ago.
* But one of the more interesting questions (and answered animately too) was the mushrooming of theseso called HONESTY BILLBOARDS throught out Pavia. Here's Mayor's Cadio's take on this.
"It started out last March where he, as mayor, had a part in the graduation rights in Pavia nat'l High School. Not as the guestspeaker but just some Welcome Address or something. He cited tat this rite was even postponed due to CongW. Syjuco was out of the country in an earlier date.
So he thought of a topic in his address that would bring them back to the "basics" of politics which he said would center on honesty and service. So he delivered his speech early on sicne the CongW was LATE. So he centered on the usual honesty in service and the likes. The she came,
without(or very minimal) the applause contrary to the expected. Then the salutatory address came and reflected on what Mayor Gorriceta said and in front of the CongW.. Then it was her turn to deliver her speech with some applause in some points that the audience deem right. But when
the CongW. said that ALL GRADUATES WILL RECEIVE (AROUND) PHP 5,000 SCHOLARSHIP, NO ONE CLAPPED. As in the silience was deafening As if as everybody who heard it really got what they were promised before."
* Then days after, Mayor was urged to put this BASICS to a mu nicipal points of view thus this explains the billboards war in pavia.
* He also mentioned that only Pavia among all the towns i nthe 2nd district doesn't have this SYJUCO BILLBOARDS that show the tesda gen man, the Congw and PGMA "presenting" some road projects. he even said and has proof that prior to this 3 some billboard it was just the congw and syjuco himself minus PGMA. he said that te PGMA
was just added to serve as shiled vs the tirades vs the Syjucos. You know pointinh your figner to these billboards also means pointing them to the president.

Aside from the church and the golf course, among the recognizable symbols of Sta. Barbara are Gen. Martin Delgado's bronze statue and the 120 foot high flagpole located in front on the Municipal building and the town plaza. They were among the priority projects of the National government for the Centennial Independence Day celebration more than a decade ago. It also included a museum nearby. MORE..... This giant flag is only displayed during special occasions. If you're lucky enough to be in town when its displayed, just be sure to pray that the wind will cooperate to make it wave back at you. Fortunately, the church is just a few steps away

That is a very nice Idea... A beautiful park that would compliment the beauty of Iloilo River... In some other countries, they built man made river on their park as an added attraction... But us in Iloilo City, we are blessed with a beautiful River...

very nice idea. I would love to see park/parks lining Iloilo Boulevard. There's this something in greeneries amidst the buildings, etc. If Iloilo City could have a better park, it will surely boost Iloilo City's image as one of the best places to live in the country, a family-oriented city, etc. Plus of course, it will bring tourism activities around teh area and the entire city.

Undisputed gid nga matuod ! With more schools offering IT and TESDA offering a course to train a call center agent, Iloilo City will surely a place to be for BPOs.
Also, the upcoming coal plant to help stabilise the energy of the city and of the province is another boost to the city's unwavering business hub image.
I hope to see more call centers and other BPOs sprouting in the city and province of ILOILO !

amo gid man ina siya iya kay dira naga-start ang Iloilo Boulevard. You can't have a stright road unless you'll make a bridge a flyover. Dako ina ang area kung diin maga-start ang Iloilo Boulevard. Here's wishing that ang tiangge or patahan or carideria will be replaced by corner hotel or a park entrance. Another attractive area for commercial development gid tani.
Speaking of good ara for commercial development, dira sa may stoplight just right at the end of the bridge going to IDC and UP, maayo man ina dira. Tani may hotel nga magpatindog dira kay daw barren ina nga area. The area I am referring is a piece of land just across PAG-IBIG and Standard Insurance.
spacewagon1 June 15th, 2009, 08:48 PM Iloilo City showcases disaster preparedness
THIS city is showcasing its disaster preparedness as Ilonggos highlight unity and cooperation rising from the devastation of typhoon Frank that struck the metropolis a year ago.
The City Government here is hosting a week-long commemoration activities dubbed “Surviving and Prevailing Over Typhoon Frank” which kicked off with a launching program and opening of exhibits at SM City here yesterday.
“We are commemorating the heroism of the Ilonggos…to rise fast from the tragedy. We take pride with the cooperation of the residents who strive to overcome such magnitude of destruction,” Mayor Jerry P. Treñas stressed.
“We are celebrating the Ilonggo bayanihan spirit on rehabilitation with lots of initiatives of the whole community as we work hand-in-hand for the rapid recovery of the city. We also acknowledge the help from our partners and donors here and abroad,” he said.
City Tourism Office (CTO) chief Ben Jimena said the commemoration allows the city to showcase how it was able to survive the catastrophe and succeed in bringing people’s lives back to normal.
The celebration is composed of photo exhibition at malls showing photographs during and after the tragic floods including the rehabilitation efforts; essay writing and quiz bee contests about typhoon Frank and calamity preparedness at SM City on June 18 and an interschool oratorical contest on mitigating the effects of environmental threats.
A commemorative program will be conducted at the Jaro Plaza June 21 where various agencies will launch their projects on environmental and emergency concerns. The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) will make public their Project 143; the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) will introduce initiatives for the Maasin watershed; and the Photographic Society of Iloilo (PSI) will collaborate with the Philippine Coast Guard for the Iloilo River cleanup.
Jimena explained that Project 143 is the Red Cross way of imbibing the spirit of volunteerism where residents will be trained to respond fast to crisis situations, carry out first aid tasks and save lives. The PNRC will conduct capacity-building trainings for villages to empower responsible barangay folks in handling emergency cases.
The PNRC will also spearhead the holding of orientation for rapid emergency responses. Emergency drills maybe organized for establishments upon request.
The city’s Crisis Management Office will conduct a rescue demonstration at the Salog River between the Montinola Bridge at Barangay Simon Ledesma and Jaro Bridge at Barangay Tabuc Suba.
Meanwhile, TV networks ABS-CBN and GMA7 are showing documentary films of typhoon Frank and media collaterals on disaster preparedness. Ilonggo filmmaker Oskie Nava has made available his short film, which he entered in an international film festival, to be shown alongside other footages. To reach a wider audience, the CTO requested Robinsons and SM cinemas to insert the documentaries between the main movie features. (PIO)

spacewagon1 June 15th, 2009, 08:50 PM Massage therapy emerges
as 2nd most favored course
By Lydia C. Pendon
BELIEVE it or not but a short term training emerges as second best most favored course by most college graduates here who could not yet find a job suited to their education.
Passing the examinations as a President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) scholar under the banner of the Technical Enhancement of Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), Jacqueline Varona, 22, is bidding her time for the result of her application to go to the United States as a practical nursing graduate last March 2009.
She applied at the TESDA PGMA scholarship program and took a 560-hour training as massage therapist. She was given a P50 daily stipend for transportation and now she is ready for the big time.
“I took up massage therapy to augment my knowledge on practical nursing and care giving. I never regretted the day I’ve decided to become a PGMA scholar,” she said.
Jacqueline is one of the second batch of 20 trainees at Asian Touch training institute in Molo, Iloilo City and subsidized by TESDA to give the training. The trainees are slated to participate in the national competency exam on June 22 at Asian Touch.
But they have yet to finish their training until July 4, 2009 which she positively says she can pass with flying colors.
Her batch mates include Joenel Custodio, 25, who is a computer programmer graduate, and Sharon Devicais, 38, who is a psychology college graduate.
Custodio, a resident of Compania Central, Molo district here, has been to Singapore and Qatar as a computer programmer. He is also an accomplished barista. But he wanted more knowledge and more livelihood opportunities to help his family, thus he studied massage therapy.
His message to the young people who could not find work immediately after college graduation is to avail of the PGMA scholarship program on short term courses and be more and better prepared in job hunting.
Devicais is a psychologist married to an architect. She had been a barista, a project coordinator of Mead Johnson and a call center agent.
But life is so expensive especially with growing children and she has to augment the family income as a massage therapist.
“I believe there is open opportunity for massage therapists especially in big hotels in the United States and Europe. With my added knowledge as a massage therapist, I hope to get a better overseas placement and help my family,” she said.
Under the PGMA scholarship program, TESDA is currently giving a slot for 3,280 scholars in Western Visayas by showcasing the courses offered in last June 12, 2009 celebration here of the 111th Philippine Independence Day.
The short courses offered are massage therapy for 70 days, barista for 15 days, bar tending for 15 days and food and beverage service for 40 days.
TESDA Regional Director Buen Mondejar said the scholarship slots are still open for those who wanted to participate in the program, pointing out that the program has opened the doors of hope and job opportunities to people who wanted to get out of poverty.
What is good about the program is that the scholars are given a daily transportation stipend and assured of ready job placement, he added.

habagatcentral1 June 15th, 2009, 08:53 PM I just hope that Iloilo can go beyond call centers...there are a lot of sectors in BPO that are clearly untapped like the back office sector or the KPO sector. The talents of the Ilonggos would shine if the BPOs would go on also with this highly-skilled outsourcing jobs, other than talent and technical skills.
Iloilo deserves more than just call centers IMHO. We do not like to be just a call center factory, we should be beyond it also like the realm of IT. And I would prefer to see action rather than just another recycled press release.
But for now, I'm satisfied seeing call cenetrs entering the city...but its not enough....Iloilo deserves more than just customer or technical support representatives.
My dos sentimos. :2cents:
