Pope gets a taste of Guimaras mangoes
TRUE to the realization of her pet campaign when she first ran for public office, former Guimaras Governor and Congresswoman Emily Relucio-Lopez did put the Guimaras mango on the world map.
And albeit retired from politics, she has not ceased to work in pushing for that honor.
"Plant a mango tree and send your child to college," went her motto then with years she spent in government service best remembered by her commitment, perseverance and strong resolve to do just that --- put the Guimaras mango on the world map.
Last Tuesday, members of the Philippine Delegation which includes Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, Senator and Mrs. Ralph Recto, Bea Zobel, Merci Tuazon and many others were off to the Vatican, bringing with them a basket of these Guimaras produce, the mangoes being a special gift for His Excellency, Pope Benedict XVI.
"We wanted to give him the very best," Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See, Ambassador Leonidas Vera said.
The former lawmaker was more than willing to personally work on putting together the special gift.
"These mangoes are not only from me but from all the people of Guimaras headed by Congressman Edgar Espinosa and Governor Rahman Nava. This comes with so much pride and honor that I share with each and every Guimarasnon. Our efforts has paid off and with the continued efforts to keep Guimaras mango the best that it is, then we can be assured of it remaining to be world-class," Lopez said.
And it is not only the Vatican where the distinct taste of Guimaras mangoes will be enjoyed. During Lopez's term, then US President Bill Clinton also had one special treat at the White House --- a basketful of Guimaras Mangoes. Guimaras' fertile soil said to cover about half of its land has since been found to be ideal for a range of fruit trees and upland crops. Some thirty percent of thousand mango trees bear a variety called "Carabao mango," considered and acknowledged to be the sweetest among its class.
Back in the Lopez administration with efforts and government resources still minimal, Guimaras was then said to have exported thousands of Guimaras mangoes to Singapore, Hongkong and Japan.
The Guimaras mango is the only one in the Philippines and the third in the world that has passed the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) pest-free test. It is also accepted in Australia.

lewdsaint March 24th, 2006, 07:22 AM HANJIN IN PAVIA
HANJIN Heavy Industries and Construction Co. has decided to locate its five-hectare plant and field office in the progressive town of Pavia. The giant firm, one of the biggest industrial companies in South Korea, will construct Package I of the Iloilo Flood Control Project at the cost of P1.2 billion in three years, funded by Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC). It will cover two Pavia rivers and Jaro floodway. This will surely boost the economic activities in Pavia. Congrats to Mayor Cadio Gorricetta!

This is another milestone for CPU.
I'm also a package development engineer in a semiconductor firm. Basically our jobs are to perform material selection and reliability lookaheads on new IC packages and technologies for first pass qualification. Take note that we cannot go on to mass production without it. It is good that there will be a specific course for package engineering.
This is a big boast for us as an Ilonggo that we are pioneering this kind of course. Packing development in semiconductors is promising since all new technologies are depending on electronics.
We can now attract multinational companies (e.g. Intel, Philips, Samsung, Motorola, Amkor, etc.) to invest in Iloilo because we have this kind of graduates. These companies require big labor forces. My present company has more 3000 employees excluding contractors.
With the developments of our province, the facilities and environment (i.e. International Standard Airport, Flood Control Project, Industrial Parks, Highways Improvement, Circumferential Roads, International Port, better human resources, peace in order, good government leadership etc.) these will definitely attract investors to come in. And Iloilo will become world class.
Hope that our local government will see these.
Central Philippine University now offers Packaging Engineering, the pioneer in the country. Also we are the the first to offer a bs in software engineering. FYI btw hehehe...

That's right, Lex. This is the 3rd "pioneering course" CPU is offering for its entire 100th year of existence. Remember that CPU is pioneer in the field of:
Nursing - check "Nursing" history. The Union Mission Hospital (now Iloilo Mission Hospital) school of nursing is the first school of nursing in the Philippines.
Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering - offered 2002 (I guess, correct me Lex if I'm wrong)
Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering - offered 2006.
and there's one more pending course that CPU will again be a pioneer of .. just wait next year na lang. I don't know what happened kung ngaa nauna pa ang Packaging Engineering i-offer compare sa course nga ini. Again, CPU is hitting US professional market as she always did. And CPU will continue to produce graduates of truly global in nature. :)

Pavia was long due for cityhood 1986 pa when the creation of the first Regional Agro-Industrial Center outside Metro Manila was approved by Pres Corazon Aquino. However, due to the inconsistent political turmoil happening within the area, the planned Pavia City was put into oblivion. I'm not sure if there's still enough vibrancy amongst the Paviahons lately to move its state into a city. I know that they're enjoying whatever economic progress they have right now and becoming a city is the least of their concern should I say. Apart of course from some visionaries residing in this municipality.
wecky March 24th, 2006, 09:39 PM Wow nice pics chym!

Right o Metro. Paano abi kay most of us Ilonggo forumers are outside Iloilo na .. so medyo may impact gid ang mga pics. seems nga 80% sa aton diri wala na sa Iloilo though the location at times are confusing kay gamit naton Iloilo man gihapon. Metro, okay lang ang mga wishes, nagatupa man, budlay lang sagi ta wish nga wala man nagatupa ... hehehe. But believe me, I'm really, really glad to hear a lot of developments ongoing sa aton ciudad ... probably the drumbeat of Dinagyang has awaken every Ilonggos heart both in Iloilo (and MM) and abroad.

lurker lang ko di for the meantime til I have points to contribute as well. Kinahanglan gid man magbisita diri everyday or else you'll spend hours and hourse scanning and reading all posts nga kung tan-awon mo subong, two pages a day gid man ang rate niya. So far, so good. Ang presentation sang Iloilo Thread is absolutely best. Damo gid man maayo nga matabo basta ululupod ta ah. Reading from all the posts, I can say to myself gid nga I'M PROUD TO BE AN ILONGGO ! My culture shows it .. that even the Queen Regent of Spain in the past recognized our contribution. Iloilo's present and future will always mirror our great heritage thereon, that until now is only distinct to ILOILO alone.

JikJik March 24th, 2006, 11:14 PM Hi Jik. Indeed, ILOILO is more than Iloilo City alone. There are so many beautiful spots around the province when visiting Iloilo. And yes, Sicogon Island and Isla Gigantes in Estancia-Concepcion area are few of them. Remember that the town of Estancia due to its teeming marine resources and good fishing ground is called the "ALASKA of the Philippines". Estancia itself has a direct trade with Manila and other provinces of Mindanao due its own local port, which I believe until now serves as a port of call for some NN ships and other sea vessels companies. I hope these municipalities in the northern region of the province will strengthen their bid for tourism and medium-scale industry as well. :)
Thank you Kirby for a warm welcome. The city alone is not the strongest part of Iloilo but its several municpalities, too, where each of them has a distinct characteristic, belief and history. If you have all noticed, Iloilo is not purely Hiligaynon in nature. Apart from the city itself (of course). There's a wide-ranged of Kinaray-a spread across the province where almost every town has different Kinaray-a dialect from each other.
Speaking of Estancia, all I can say is, "Estancia is really beautiful". Actually kung tan-awon mo, Estancia has an edge over other municipalities tungod sa iya port and products nga ginabaligya. But I think the local government of Estancia is so slow to grab the opportunity. Even sa growth and development sang area, mas pierdehon pa siya sang towns nga wala sang port with direct calls from national shipping industry. Dapat amo sila ang bugtawon ta para maghululag sila tanan.
Our tourism industry is slowly moving or should I say "leaping" na. This is a Montila House in Jaro district. I wonder how did you manage to take this photo in a very short distance kung indi ka sa sulod sang compound Virtute. And being in this old mansion's compound is an absolute impossible unless you are one of them. Are you a Montinola, Virute? Curious lang ako.

Dev't council defines tourism market for W. Visayas
"WE'VE GOT what you are looking for." This is the banner of the Tourism Action Plan 2010 of Western Visayas as presented by Department of Tourism Regional Director Edwin Trompeta.
The action plan garnered the unanimous nod of the Regional Development Council (RDC) during its first quarter regular meeting held recently in Iloilo City.
Trompeta said Western Visayas has everything what foreign and local tourists are looking for.
The region is also positioning itself as the festival capital of the Philippines.
The RDC approval was in recognition of the important role of tourism in the economic development of Western Visayas and as an important asset and enhancer of the quality of life of the people.
Tourism Action plan 2010 was prepared by the Department of Tourism in cooperation with the RDC-Western Visayas and the Canadian Urban Institute.
A common Western Visayas Tourism Action Plan until 2010 would serve as a blueprint to coordinate and communicate the initiatives that were undertaken by the tourism industry in the region for the past years.
Trompeta said the hub of the tourist attraction in Western Visayas region would still be Boracay and the other provinces would revolve around it.
Antique and Aklan province would be developed as nature-based eco-tourism and adventure sites.
Capiz will be promoted under the cupflowers, seafood, marine, and adventure attractions.
Negros Occidental and Bacolod City will be for adventure, culture, and heritage tourism and as site for meetings and conventions.
Iloilo will be marketed for its cultural heritage and as venue for conventions, conferences, and meetings.
Trompeta said they intend to work on the tourism support services under the lines of policy and communication support.
Target markets will be both foreign and local markets.
He also revealed that they are targeting the East Asian markets like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China and Hongkong. Though the bulk of our tourists come from the North Americas at present.
Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand markets will also be tapped, he said.
Trompeta said they are proposing two taglines in marketing Western Visayas: "Festival Capital of the Philippines" and "We've Got What You Are Looking For". (EASD)

An erotic sonnet a day in Iloilo tabloid
Mar 25, 2006
By Ma. Diosa Labiste
Philippine Daily Inquirer
EVERYDAY since February, a Hiligaynon tabloid, Hublas nga Kamatuoran (Naked Truth), publishes an erotic sonnet, a move that has earned it mixed reviews and more readers.
Sales of the newspaper in Iloilo City have improved, boosted by the popularity of the erotic sonnets among its low-income readers, said publisher Danny Fajardo.
But readership is not confined to those who peruse for prurient reasons because the poems speak to anyone who celebrates life, love and language.
The sonnets were written by Peter Solis Nery, a multi-awarded poet who was also a teacher, monk, politician, Dervish dancer, journalist, to name a few.
Before writing the 100 erotic sonnets, he tried to mount a nude protest when President Macapagal-Arroyo delivered her State of the Nation Address in 2004. He relented when he failed to get a permit to bare in front of the city’s Arroyo Fountain.
Nery is a self-styled avant-garde columnist, comparing his notoriety with that of Andy Warhol and pop star Madonna, the mother diva of reinvention.
Nery’s sonnets take liberties at the literary form, something that some critics chaff at. While these have 14 lines, the poems do away with rhyme scheme or meter. Noticeable are the eight-line octaves broken in two stanzas that present an attitude, question or proposition that the next six lines (sextets) comment on or resolve.
Sonnets
The sonnets in Hiligaynon are melodious and sensual despite the unrestrained use of language to express desire, longing and excitement. Sometimes, their power lies at the concluding couplet or in the abstract comment delivered at the end.
XXIV
(How many months, how many years, did it take Magellan To sail around the world? What crude instruments Did he use to find those islands and continents Floating, drifting in the still unmapped seas?
What typhoons did he meet, and where did he hide When mystery caved open to welcome strangers? Did he not drown in kisses, or get enchanted by the forest
At the point where the thighs converge? Did Magellan try The big toe of the left foot, or the taste of an earlobe? To travel the length of the body is to circumnavigate the world.)
Breaking convention
Nery said the erotic sonnets sought to break convention in Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a writing, “where sex is always replaced by metaphors and such literary devices as the full moon covering behind the clouds.” “What is there to fear in sex?” he added. While some sonnets celebrate homo-eroticism, Nery said he has also reclaimed heterosexual sex. The speaker or the persona is maybe a she or a he; sometimes he is a voyeur, sometimes she is a participant.
Luyag ko hikapon ka sa liwat, halukan, kag palanggaon; labaw pa sa akon pagdihon sining binalaybay sang kaulag, labaw pa sa pagpakighirup sang mapalaron nga tinta sa papel.
(I want to touch you again, kiss you, and make love to you; More than me lustfully composing this poem of desire, More than lucky ink making crazy love to paper.)
The sonnets are awaiting a book publisher but, meanwhile, they are enclosed in a plastic binding folder and assigned numbers like songs in a karaoke bar. And so, to recite them is to call out the numbers first, to mark out the sonnets, and remember that they are part of a body of work.

overtureph March 25th, 2006, 10:37 AM Iloilo: From textile to sugar country
Ambeth R. Ocampo
Looking Back
The Philippine Daily Inquirer
WHEN my teenage niece offers to prepare her father's coffee, I take note of the quantity of sugar and cream added to the steaming mug of brewed coffee, comparing this with the way my mother prepared coffee for my father -- two teaspoons freeze-dried imported instant coffee in boiling water, garnished with an eighth of a teaspoon of sugar. Descended from a long line of diabetics I understood my father's caution. Failing numerous times to get the right amount of sugar into father's coffee, I advised him to just take it black since the sugar seemed so negligible anyway.
Having grown up this way I was shocked, on my first trip to the sugar-producing province of Negros Occidental, to see my hosts dumped a dozen teaspoons of sugar in a cup of coffee, without stirring it. They explained that when I was old enough to take coffee I must contribute to the sugar economy by doing the same. Times have changed since then; now people prefer sugar substitutes in coffee and diet soft drinks. No wonder the sugar industry is a pale shadow of what it once was in the late 19th century.
Passing Muelle Loney last weekend made me re-read the personal correspondence of Nicholas Loney, who is credited with turning Iloilo City, in Panay Island, neighbor of Negros Island, from marshland to the second most important port in the Philippines. Iloilo used to be the "Queen City of the South" with direct trade to Britain but that is now history. To see how this happened, I read Alfred McCoy's revisionist essay "A Queen Dies Slowly: The Rise and Fall of Iloilo City." Loney's personal correspondence provided a glimpse into his lonely life in 19th-century Jaro while McCoy put everything in context showing how Loney killed a thriving textile industry by importing machine-made cloth from Manchester and encouraged sugar plantations to provide cargo for empty ships returning to Britain. Such is globalization for you.
Textile weaving in Iloilo goes back to pre-Spanish times, probably bartered with Chinese merchants for the 14th-century oriental ceramics that continue to be excavated in the islands of Panay and Negros to this day. Its peak began in the 18th century and ended in the 19th century as shown by trade and population figures. Writing to his family in 1856 Loney described:
"Some of the native textures [textiles?] made in this province are very beautiful, that is, as to quality. The designs, though in some instances good, are not as a rule in very good taste, but it is surprising what admirable articles the women turn out on these rude looms. I have heard the number of looms in this province estimated at 50,000, but I think this is rather over the mark. All the female population appears to be employed in weaving, and in almost every house there are three or four looms, in some as many as a dozen; but I am wasting all my available writing ground on something very like dry statistics."
In a Consular report of 1857, Loney observed that: "Considering that the Philippines are essentially an agricultural rather than a manufacturing region, the textile productions of Iloilo may be said to have reached a remarkable degree of development. Nothing strikes the attention at the weekly fairs held at the different towns more than the attendance of native-made goods offered for sale; and the number of looms at work in most of the towns and villages also affords matter for surprise. Almost every family possesses one or two of these primitive-looking machines, with a simple apparatus formed on pieces of bamboo. In the majority of the houses of the mestizos [of mixed Spanish-Filipino blood], and the more well-to-do Bisayans [natives of the Visayan region], from six to a dozen looms are kept at work. I have heard the total number in this province computed at 60,000 and though these figures may rather over-represent the actual quantity, they cannot be much beyond it. All the weaving is done by women whose wages usually amounted from 75 cents to 1.50 dollars per month. In general -- a practice unfortunately too prevalent among the natives in every branch of labor -- these wages are received for many months in advance, and the operatives frequently spend years -- become virtually slaves for a long period-before paying off an originally trifling debt. There are other workwomen employed at intervals to set up the pattern in the looms, who earn from 1.00 to 1.50 dollars per day in this manner. I should add that Capiz and Antique [provinces in Panay] produce in a lesser degree than Iloilo a proportion of manufactured goods."
It was an intricate business. Women were held in debt and traders from the towns of Molo and Jaro made all the money selling the cloth in Manila and returning with: Batangas cotton, Chinese silk and machine-made British cloth of a value that equaled Iloilo textile exports to Manila. Panay textiles were so popular as exports, generating a sale of one million Mexican dollars at one point. Then Loney had local designs manufactured in Manchester, then flooded the market with them, thus sending the local industry to extinction. Cloth exports from Panay dwindled from a high of 30, 673 piezas in 1864 to a mere 5,100 piezas in 1873. Sugar replaced woven textiles changing the urban landscape forever. Population moved to sugar plantations and the port of Iloilo filled with foreign trading houses. The once busy looms became obsolete. There was a new boom industry but the province and people did not profit. As in the experience in hemp production in the Bicol region, what occurred in Iloilo, to use historian Norman Owen's phrase, was simply "prosperity without progress."

kirby21 March 25th, 2006, 08:18 PM That's right, Lex.
I thought gin-offer na nila ang course nga to Weck? I'll try accessing CPU's website later. Mas gin-promote pa to during Centennial Homecoming kesa sa Packaging Engineering. actually, mas wala gani bati-a ang Packaging Engineering nga ini. Anyway, hope to see that course running soon. :)

lovely picture of SM Delgado, Virtute. It looks much, much better and bigger from its original size in 1980's. Cheers! :)
kirby21 March 25th, 2006, 08:27 PM Thank you Kirby for a warm welcome.
Damo gid kita ipakita nga places of interests sa Iloilo, and I'm sure nga we can draw a lot of tourists in our place by banking sa aton old architectural design buildings, natural wonders, and hospitability sang aton mga kasimanwas dira. keep it up. We're surely taking the right path.
I agree Jik. I'm sure Estancia will find its way to the top soon. Hope to see more investments within the area. :)

Will this be of help to Iloilo's power crisis? I hope so. More than anything else, I wish there'll be more energy investors to come to our province. Iloilo City alone consumes a lot of electricity and definitely needs to increase power supply to meet its demands. This is a welcome improvement of course and hopefully more energy investors will come and invest in our province/city in the future.

Well in Cambridge UK,ive seen a lot of people even professionals cycling to work and school. Biskan naka coat and tie na ina ha kag naka gala, cycling pa rin. Ca pinas, naka necktie lang eh huya huya guid ako nga indi makasakay taxi. Pero diri, shocking guid, people doesnt care if you are cycling in a formal wear. I like the way they think about it. Cambridge is like Yloilo, plenty of old buildings (well, more than 400 years na ang iban nga mga schools diri) and schools.
Old small roads and buildings are still being used today. And of course, the infamous cam river for punting and plenty of parks around the city.
So you're in Cambridge, Caloy? I used to work within Cambridge area but last December, I opted to relocate in Eastbourne side. Cambridge University is absolutely nice. We once had our canal cruise with my friends and really enjoying it to the max. Are you working in Addenbrookes or Huntingdon NHS? Hope to visit Cambridge again in next few months to come.
About cycling, you're right to say about it. Wala gid man diri nahuya iya mga taho. They don't mind and care at all. That's why I liked them a lot. Simply lang gid and literally frank sila in a most sensible way. We may have good values in some way pero sa lifestyle daw gusto ko di mga taho iya. Maybe I liked their views for some things and of the world. We visited the university library as well courtesy of one friend, and yay .. fifteen-storey with underground pa. Kinahanglan pa magpa-sched or magpa-appointment ka inorder to use their library especially kung international students ka.
So far, so good gid man kung i-patterned ta ang Iloilo sa UK cities. Mas gusto ko. With lots of park and old buildings, pwedeng-pwede gid.
JonJon75 March 26th, 2006, 02:32 AM lurker lang ko di for the meantime til I have points to contribute as well.
Hi Jik.
Thanks for joining us here. Ako man lurker at times depending if there's some issue I liked and I'm happy to put my personal response or opinion, too. And speaking of Ilonggo culture, I guess every Ilonggo here is really proud of our heritage. It's already in history and it's undeniably good to know our past. At least, people back home is trying to preserve whatever left from our forefathers' glory. You can still see old buildings around downtown area proof of our early urbanisation. Old churches are also present to prove our strong Christian beliefs and a good taste of architectural designs during the era. In as much as modern buildings start sprouting all over the city nowadays, the magnificient past we had is just so hard to deny.

This is an impressive second project of Sta Lucia Developers in Iloilo. Looks like Savannah has too many competitors these days. Sta Rosa Village is just 5-10 minute drive from Savannah community. I'm not so sure whether this development is within city area pa or Pavia/Oton na rin. The entrance is not as grand as The Metropolis (first project of Sta Lucia) but basing from what I've heard, it's much better in security, accessibility, etc. One of our classmates bought a piece of land in Sta Rosa few months ago lang, and I don't know the real truth coz he said, it's much better in Savannah kuno, well the other says the opposite (he he he). It's a battle of new communities sa Iloilo subong. If I have enough pennies to spare, I'll buy in both areas na lang para wala gamo.

Dev't council defines tourism market for W. Visayas
"WE'VE GOT what you are looking for." This is the banner of the Tourism Action Plan 2010 of Western Visayas as presented by Department of Tourism Regional Director Edwin Trompeta.
I'm sorry to say but what Guimaras will be marketed for? Guimaras should have an equal exposure to these five provinces mentioned above. And above anything else, the emphasis will feature Guimaras more being the newest province in the region. Guimaras has white sand beaches, too like Boracay in Aklan and Northern parts of Iloilo. Did Guimaras Governor read this article? They've been overshadowed several times in the past. Tani subong, hatagan man sila emphasis kay they have good tourism potential, too. Paging Dir Trompeta of DOT Regional Office in Iloilo City !
kirby21 March 26th, 2006, 07:04 AM Hello Jon and Mars. Balik ka na gali Jon? How's your mini-vacation? lol. I hope you did enjoy well. :)
Mars, thanks for bringing the subject up. I'm also wond'ring where's Guimaras in the list. I hope Gov Nava will do something about this.
Caloy, like Cambridge University campus, too. I was there last month for a day tour with my friends from Northern Ireland. Hope we'll have a river cruise in Iloilo City, too ....... someday. :)

57-hectare for a village is not too big though (land area-wise). In size, Savannah could run them all with almost 300-hectare of property. But I guess your right to say that Sta Rosa looks promising compare to The Metropolis. (more input soon)
freezing_pt March 26th, 2006, 07:41 AM Hope may coverage lang ... ABS online or TFC. Kahit hindi live okay lang. :) Freeze, Manila-based ka? I think Dinagyang.Com people may EB sa Manila for Aliwan Festival. Nabasahan ko man lang sa forum. :)
Nabasahan ko nga eh...successful yung first eb nila...hope may time ako...bc gid...qc ako naga-work...
freezing_pt March 26th, 2006, 07:50 AM Pavia was long due for cityhood 1986 pa when the creation of the first Regional Agro-Industrial Center outside Metro Manila was approved by Pres Corazon Aquino. Apart of course from some visionaries residing in this municipality.
it would really be of great value if pavia would aim for a cityhood status...it should...yung problem lang kasi ay na maliit lang ang land area niya at kaunti lang ata ang population...at yung accessibility din siguro...isa lang ata ang main road from iloilo city to pavia, traffic pa kung minsan...if they are to attract investors or manufacturing firms they should build more road networks

Hi man da sa imo Jon. Glad to hear from you as well. I barely had a time to post BUT here I am again. What a big laugh indeed! Anyway, downtown buildings like the ones we have in Calle Real now mirrored our good past. At times they're history themselves rather than just a part of it. Our grand old Churches found in almost each municipality shows the extent of an early civilisation we had from Spanish regime and the time thereafter. It's a good symbol though and probably the best proof we have; a tool our dear city is holding in moving towards a better future.
JikJik March 26th, 2006, 11:21 AM Welcome home, JikJik. Abi ko nadula ka na ba? Nice to see you around. And thanks for all the comments. Hope to see you more often diri. Cheers! :)
Thank you Kirby. Like I said, I'm just lurking at times. Sometimes, reading from a mere post is just enough to make my day for good. I wished I'll have the luxury of time to stay here in the forum longer. But i'll try my best, mate. You might be surprised to see me here more often than you think I could.
JikJik March 26th, 2006, 11:36 AM Yes. I was visiting that day when the parade procession of the Jaro Queen was passing in front of the house. I'm going to show some pics of the procesion soon.
Thanks for the answer, Virtute. Somehow I used to wonder in the past about that house which made me a bit nosy of who's the owner of it. Anyway, my curiousity is not in a bad sense Virtute so don't worry about it. It's a mere product of my youthful inquisitive mind so they say. That mansion looks lovely filled with flowers all over the place. I remember that during '80s, yellow bells were all shrubbing the gate, which made it all-alive and full of life. It sure complement its nearby Jaro Evangelical Cathedral's Worship Hall.

The total passengers handled by the Iloilo Airport in 2001 was 701,873 ... if the annual growth rate from 1991-1998 is considered, then the estimated total passenger handled for 2006 would be 1,045,685.

wecky March 26th, 2006, 07:41 PM I thought gin-offer na nila ang course nga to Weck? I'll try accessing CPU's website later. Mas gin-promote pa to during Centennial Homecoming kesa sa Packaging Engineering. actually, mas wala gani bati-a ang Packaging Engineering nga ini. Anyway, hope to see that course running soon. :)
don't know what happened Kirby. I'll try to email sang mga kilala naton sa admin. It was well-promoted during centennial pero after that, medyo nadula na. Probably there's a little enquiries regarding sa subject/course nga ia so gin-pending lang nila. But we don't know the exact reason til the admin releases an info sa bagay nga ini. We'll just wait and see in a year or two years time. Damo pa sila naka-line-up nga project subong. Recently they just opened the Birthing Center so sako gid tanan.
wecky March 26th, 2006, 07:51 PM he did post already, Weck. Hopefully, sige-sige na. I liked to hear opinions, infos, etc from Ilonggos everywhere. At least hindi tayo nag-iisa (he he he).
right o Jon. Nice posts indeed. At least dugang naman aton posters di. Bal-an mo man ta subong nga in and out aton drama di. Sako bal-an.

Don't think I'll consider dual right now. I'm still enjoying it ... hehehe .. at least pagnag-travel ako, wala na ako problema. Pwede na ako lmaglibot-libot around EU countries without applying for visa ... hehehe. Kirby is processing his citizenship now. Ambut kung nag-exam na siya ah. Indi man ina manugid para surprise kuno. Kung manawag na siya for celebration, then amo na ina eh. Diin na si Kirby man? Nami pamangkuton pero budlay na kay basi ma-jinx pa natonsiya ... hehehe. Sako siguro review niya sang "life's in the UK".
I agree. lol. Dapat ato gid siya tuod upod si Jollibee and the es'n'em (of SM)

Sin-o nagbakal Jon? I knew one pero no comment ako. Bakal siya for the sake of art lang daw ... hehehe. I've been to Monte Rosa during their Open House kay gindungan nila sa centennial sang CPU. I don't know kung may booth pa gani sila sa sulod sang campus for exhibit. It's a good place. Five-minute drive lang tuod from Savannah. Pero daw wala pa man panimalay didto ah. Ang entrance niya tuod indi iconic pero pagsulod mo naman okay naman siya. Problem sa Sta Lucia developer is ikaw pa magpatindog balay. Of course like sa aton diri sa sagwa, wala na kita tiyempo sina. Sa Savannah naman, house and lot ang ila gina-sale so sulod ka lang pag tapos na. Ngaa Jon, may plano ka magbakal? Investment man ina gihapon. Btw, Clubhouse ina ang gina-construct nila? Okay ah. Daw pareho man sa The Metropolis ang iya design.
wecky March 26th, 2006, 08:12 PM it would really be of great value if pavia would aim for a cityhood status...it should...yung problem lang kasi ay na maliit lang ang land area niya at kaunti lang ata ang population...at yung accessibility din siguro...isa lang ata ang main road from iloilo city to pavia, traffic pa kung minsan...if they are to attract investors or manufacturing firms they should build more road networks
Hopefully Freeze. Pavia's population grows dramatically for the last three years considering almost all new subdivisions/villages are located there right now. Sa road networking naman, there's a new highway from Pavia's Aganan to Mandurriao/Pavia's Jibao-an. Along this road, you can find the CPU Centennial Village, the Providence, etc. Damo pa area of improvement ah pero I guess they can make it to a city due sa mga industries located sa municipality nila.

UNSOLVED CRIMES
Church robbers invade Visayas
By Jeannette I. Andrade, Reporter
The Manila Times
The church is probably the last place anyone expects a crime to be committed.
But between 2002 and 2004, a wave of thefts swept several churches in the Visayas.
Catholic churches in Bohol, Iloilo and Cebu were the scenes of decapitations, mutilations and disappearances of centuries-old religious icons and artifacts.
Although church thefts were recorded even before 2002, at least 30 robberies were committed in that year.
The Santa Filomena Church in Sibonga town, Cebu, was the first victim. On April 2 the heads and hands of the statues of Saint Peter and the “Birhen Maria Salome” were cut off by unidentified persons.
The vandalism shocked devotees of the patron saints.
Local police had no leads and the case lay forgotten.
On June 1 thieves struck at the San Guillermo de Aquitania Church in Dalaguete, Cebu, decapitating a five-foot Sacred Heart of Jesus icon. Another mutilation occurred in Santander town, and later, 160-year-old icons at Sogod and Catmon towns were taken.
In Sogod town the hands and head of Saint James as well as the ivory images of Saint Joseph, Sagrada Corazon and the Medalla Milagrosa were swiped, and in Catmon the century-old statue of San Guillermo de Aquitania disappeared. Similar thefts took place in Alcoy and San Remigio towns.
At this point the Cebu Provincial Police Office took notice and coordinated with churches around the province in securing the religious images.
Because security in Cebu churches tightened, the thieves shifted to churches in Bohol.
On November 16 the churches in Talibon and Garcia Hernandez towns lost the images of San Roque, Virgin Dolorosa, Virgin of Happy, the Holy Child Jesus, the hands and head of Saint Joseph and 10 antique priests’ robes.
No more thefts took place for four months after that. The break ended on March 5, 2003, when Barangay Cam*bitoon in Inabanga town lost its San Vicente Ferrer and San Roque icons.
The thieves then returned to Cebu, striking once every week for five months, resting for two months and then resuming their vandalism.
On November 26, 2003, a break-in was reported at the parish in Bacong, Negros Oriental, which lost the statues of San Jose, San Isidro Labrador, the Virgin of Korea and Santa Monica.
The statues of San Jose and San Isidro Labrador had been in the church since the 19th century and were considered priceless.
The resurgence meant that the group responsible for the thefts in Cebu and Bohol had transferred its operations anew. But Cebu remained its base of operations.
Iloilo was the next target. In Tigbauan and Santa Barbara towns on November 24 and 25, 2004, thieves made off with the feet of a 15th-century Santo Niño statue estimated at half a million pesos and the ivory head of San Agustin which has been with the Santa Barbara Parish since 1872.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church sought the help of the Philippine National Police to catch the thieves and recover the religious items.
The religious images are priceless, and their loss appeals for the preservation of centuries of faith and culture.

kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 12:14 PM Iloilo Milk Processing Plant inaugurated
By Ian C. Espada
TIGBAUAN, Iloilo -- The province of Iloilo would soon be put in the map as one of the Dairy Zones in the country.
Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Cesar M. Drilon expressed this optimism during the blessing and inauguration of the Iloilo Dairy Processing Plant at the Tigbauan National High School Campus last March 24, 2006.
Drilon said further calling the project as "Aton Gid Ini" could surely make a difference in the lives of dairy farmers in Iloilo province since they have shown the capability of sustaining the project to let it grow.
The dairy processing plant, which is funded by the Provincial Government under the administration of Governor Niel D. Tupas, Sr. costs P2 million and would serve as the central area to covert the raw milk from dairy cooperatives into pasteurized milk and other milk products fit for human consumption.
The National Dairy Authority, on the other hand, provided the milk processing equipment to Iloilo Federation of Dairy Cooperatives (Ifedco).
The equipment is capable of processing 500 liters of fresh milk per hour.
Ifedco is composed of five organized dairy cooperatives in five municipalities in southern part of Iloilo such as Paabot Dairy Development Cooperative of Leon, Vatabaca Miagao Dairy Development Cooperative of Miagao, Cordova Norte Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Tigbauan, Jovellar-Catiringan Dairy Development Cooperative of Igbaras, and Oton Dairy Development Cooperative of Oton. It has a total of 106 dairy farmers now.
Drilon also assured dairy farmers that additional heads of cattle to be imported from New Zealand would soon be shipped in the province this year.
To augment the income of these dairy farmers, he said, the National Dairy Authority would train their housewives in making sweets such as pastillas, yemas and cheese, among others, out of milk by-products.
Drilon added this project is also in support to the Milk Feeding Program of Senate President Franklin M. Drilon as way of solving malnutrition in the country.
In the Province of Iloilo alone, the milk-feeding project under the Batang Ilonggo Ka nutrition program will benefit 5, 359 school children.
Meanwhile, data showed that as of the month of February this year, the farmers collected a total of 13,714.50 liters of milk. A total of 67,567.90 liters were collected in the whole year of 2005 with market value of P1.2 million.
Milk products are now available in several malls and department stores in Iloilo and being sold in several municipalities and in schools and universities in the province. (Capitol News)

Thanks astroboi. Buti ka pa nakita mo na ang Pintados de Pasi Festival of Passi City whereas kami na from Iloilo itself we barely had a chance to watch Pintados. Anyway, come Dinagyang 2007, PM anyone of us here at baka may uuwi sa amin diyan. :) We'll gladly tour you around Iloilo.

Thank you Overtureph. I'll try to get a copy back home pag-uwi ko.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 12:39 PM ^^ Thanks for the new articles Kirby. Another business opportunity in Oton's suburban district. Hopefully, more milk processing plant will be erected in Iloilo. At least the cost of milk in our province will be much, much lower pa. Plus of course the accessibility of our fellow Ilonggos to have a glass of milk in every table for the children and "once-a-child" din.
Also, kudos to Alma Leagogo and to Andrea Stuart. Three cheers to both of them.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 12:44 PM Iya ni soul to gali ang pics .... gn send ya lang sa akon kag ako nag post, hehe... Sa iya kamo pasalamat :)
I've passed by Pavia, the commercial development there is not as bustling as Jaro, but the residential developments there are picking up ... from large mansions to landscaped subdivisions. And Leading the way are:
Savannah
http://static.flickr.com/35/118116139_e5bf10842b.jpg?v=0
and Providence. But there's a lot of other new communities that aren't as much advertised like:
Westwoods by Henber Realty
http://static.flickr.com/35/118116141_8f8d43773b.jpg?v=0
and the CPU Centennial Village
http://static.flickr.com/55/118116140_0afb9b1804.jpg?v=0
Great stuffs, Chymera. I never know that CPU Centennial Village looks a little bit classy outside. Ganda naman pala eh. And really good development in Pavia, too. Pavia is definitely turning into an industrial-residential haven of Iloilo. I'm sure Oton is following the same footsteps, too. Savannah for more info is located in Pulo Maestra Vita, Oton.
kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 12:53 PM ^^ ara ka da gali Jon. Have a nice day.
I believe that there's a good competition between Pavia and Oton when it comes to this matter, Jon. Oton is showing a lot of residential developments lately if you have noticed. Definitely, the biggest community in Iloilo right now is Savannah. Also, part of Monte Rosa belongs to Oton as well (with half of it either Pavia or Mandurriao district of Iloilo City). Few businesses relocate themselves in Oton, too. And last year, there's more new buildings along the highway from Molo to Oton than Jaro to Pavia. Pavia still enjoy biggest slice of most industries like Coca-Cola Plant, San Miguel Corporation Plant, B-Meg, VitaRich, etc. But Oton is NOT lagging behind either. We'll see in few years time. I bet few more municipalities surrounding the city of Iloilo will rise and compete for commercial and industrial relocation as the city of Iloilo could hardly support it anymore, land area-wise. :)
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 01:03 PM 57-hectare for a village is not too big though (land area-wise). In size, Savannah could run them all with almost 300-hectare of property. But I guess your right to say that Monte Rosa looks promising compare to The Metropolis. (more input soon)
Kirby, you're right to say about the land area thingy. But we can't deny the fact that Monte Rosa is also a first-class subd in nature like The Metropolis, Puerto Real, Gran Plains and Providence. Savannah and Monte Rosa differs sa marketing strategy lang guro plus the fact that Savannah is selling house-and-lot package whereby in Monte Rosa and The Metropolis naman is lot/s only. But like Wecky said, Savannah is offering more advantage coz masulod ka lang kay tapos na ang tanan. And since we're here outside the country, it's a little bit awful to have a full-blown monitoring of the construction process sang balay nga ipatindog mo. I'm not bothered at all but it's really a waste of time kung ikaw pa magpili design, etc.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 01:07 PM  nice pics and nice articles
great job everyone
Thank you Whyte. Join us here migs.

Kirby, sure you'll enjoy this one. So, ara na sa Iloilo subong, pwede ka na ka spa-simmering didto, just in case. Believe me, foot massage and hilot is an absolute recommendation. Lovely!
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 01:15 PM Hi man da sa imo Jon.
I agree. Iloilo City Proper (esp Calle Real) is an absolute tourist magnet. A lot of history abounds the place. I just wish to see more cafe's, cofeeshops, restos, bars, etc along each side to make it more alive and cozy. I like to see in more European in style.
Hello Jon and Mars.
Hope we'll have a river cruise in Iloilo City, too ....... someday. :)
I'm back and back for good. Weekend in Paris is a good escape, Kirbs. We paid less coz it's still off-season pa. But of course, it's cold and damp but okay pa rin. Seeing the good 'ol Eiffel and Louvre is a definite treat.
kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 01:29 PM don't know what happened Kirby.
Probably Weck. I'm not so sure as well. Let's see in 2 years time if this program enquiry will pick up, too. They're studying the US market right now whether it's feasible to carry on the project.
Sinjin P. March 27th, 2006, 01:32 PM Hi Good Evening guys! I'd just like to ask your permission that I'll create thread XII, is that okay? Thanks.
Virtute March 27th, 2006, 01:38 PM Thanks for the answer, Virtute.
Hi JikJik,
If you're really curious who was the owner of the house. He was Rodrigo Araneta Montinola. That is why in the front and top of the house you see the initials R.A.M overlapping each other.
Here's his personal info and pictures of him:
http://montinola.org/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I0113&tree=Montinola
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 01:42 PM right o Jon. Nice posts indeed. At least dugang naman aton posters di. Bal-an mo man ta subong nga in and out aton drama di. Sako bal-an.
Amo gid. Busy nga daan kita diri. he he he. But what matters most daw acording sa ila is the presence and response. and so i agree GID. It's nice to know other people's views especially those with sense and tactfulness.
Don't think I'll consider dual right now. I'm still enjoying it ... hehehe .. at least pagnag-travel ako, wala na ako problema. Pwede na ako lmaglibot-libot around EU countries without applying for visa ... hehehe. Kirby is processing his citizenship now. Ambut kung nag-exam na siya ah. Indi man ina manugid para surprise kuno. Kung manawag na siya for celebration, then amo na ina eh. Diin na si Kirby man? Nami pamangkuton pero budlay na kay basi ma-jinx pa natonsiya ... hehehe. Sako siguro review niya sang "life's in the UK".
well and good. I don't think so either if I'm in your shoes. We used to talk about it here, too but having a dual citi doesn't tick my senses. I think I need to talk with someone else's who's carrying two passports and has a positive view/s about it. Then maybe, I'll change my mind.
like that idea .. si Ronald Mcdonald iya indi po pagpa-entrahon? hehehe.
Nice try, Weck. Why not? It will look like all the mascots roaming around Disneyland Paris. I wonder what Mickey's doing in Sleeping Beauty Castle? I thought the daily storytelling in the castle's veranda is for children's only. Seeing all the oldies there laughing made me smile gid. It's kinda wierd but good kind of wierd huh!
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 01:44 PM Hi Good Evening guys! I'd just like to ask your permission that I'll create thread XII, is that okay? Thanks.
It's not a problem with me Sinjin. It's no biggies at all. Go on, my friend.
Sinjin P. March 27th, 2006, 01:47 PM It's not a problem with me Sinjin. It's no biggies at all. Go on, my friend.
Okay, mamaya na siguro, maybe at post #495+. I'll be eating my dinner and I suppose it'll reach that post number by then. :D :jk:
kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 01:50 PM tani with all this developments, the developers and the city government would not overlook the parks and nature within the city. Mas manami pa guihapon tulokon ang madamo nga buildings with lots or nature (mga kakahuyan, parks) around as well. Mas relaxing sa mga tawo after a days hardwork.
Good suggestion, Caloy. Like you, I want to see parks and more greeneries in Iloilo City, too. Too many buildings are not my cup of tea at all. Or probably we're just used here in Europe where parks is an absolute plus. Hopefully, they'll build a big one apart from the mini-Rotary Park and district plazas. I'm sure Ilonggos will enjoy the luxury of cool wind and picnic in the park should it'd be pushed through.
kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 01:53 PM Hi Good Evening guys! I'd just like to ask your permission that I'll create thread XII, is that okay? Thanks.
^^ It's okay, Sinjin. Carry on, man. Thank you in advance. :)
Sinjin P. March 27th, 2006, 01:54 PM Okay, but there's nothing unique with it, just copying your intro and adding very few stuff. Anyway, it's the thought that counts, lol.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 01:55 PM Okay, mamaya na siguro, maybe at post #495+. I'll be eating my dinner and I suppose it'll reach that post number by then. :D :jk:
he he he. We'll try if we can, Sinjin. I hope we can sustain the whole lot of 20 more post in one go. Hopefully, some Ilonggo forumers will join us to make it more easy. Cheers.
Sinjin P. March 27th, 2006, 01:57 PM ^^ Hey, don't do that, I was just joking! :D That'll be spamming if we continuously post to fill the thread.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 02:01 PM Sin-o nagbakal Jon? I knew one pero no comment ako. Bakal siya for the sake of art lang daw ... hehehe. I've been to Monte Rosa during their Open House kay gindungan nila sa centennial sang CPU. I don't know kung may booth pa gani sila sa sulod sang campus for exhibit. It's a good place. Five-minute drive lang tuod from Savannah. Pero daw wala pa man panimalay didto ah. Ang entrance niya tuod indi iconic pero pagsulod mo naman okay naman siya. Problem sa Sta Lucia developer is ikaw pa magpatindog balay. Of course like sa aton diri sa sagwa, wala na kita tiyempo sina. Sa Savannah naman, house and lot ang ila gina-sale so sulod ka lang pag tapos na. Ngaa Jon, may plano ka magbakal? Investment man ina gihapon. Btw, Clubhouse ina ang gina-construct nila? Okay ah. Daw pareho man sa The Metropolis ang iya design.
No comment amigo. Text ko lang sa imo karon. Curious ka gid haw? Bal-an ko migo mo nagbakal da last year. Okay man. Lapitanay gid ta tanan nga mga batchmates kung matabo ini. he he he. We're all out of city area now so driving is not a problem anymore. About sa entrance sang Monte Rosa, it's so casual, I guess. Big gate, etc. Hopefully, the clubhouse will finish by next year or so. You don't know, basi makapuli man ta didto and at least wind up a bit sa ila new pool. I'm glad Sa Lucia developer is gaining ground sa Iloilo. It's already their second project. I'm sure kung ma-sold ini tanan like The Metropolis, may ara naman sila idugang nga project. How I wish it'll be in San Miguesl, Zarraga or Pototan area naman.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 02:03 PM Okay, but there's nothing unique with it, just copying your intro and adding very few stuff. Anyway, it's the thought that counts, lol.
okay then. And yes, it's always the tought that counts.
Sinjin P. March 27th, 2006, 02:04 PM Cheers to Iloilo and the whole Philippines! Mabuhi kita mga Pinoy!
kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 02:10 PM Nabasahan ko nga eh...successful yung first eb nila...hope may time ako...bc gid...qc ako naga-work...
another EB na naman. wow. Okay pa kamo da nga mga Ilonggos sa Manila. Kami di EB man pero once every two or three months lang. Mostly with my batchamtes back in school and some former colleagues in hospital. Enjoy your EB in Aliwan, Freeze. Sin-o ang naga-organise, si Soul?

marsleg March 27th, 2006, 02:24 PM sabi ni lewd, last weekend ata of april...ill confirm pa...
Okay Freeze. Thanks a lot.
marsleg March 27th, 2006, 02:29 PM im sure mars, may ara man plans for guimaras...pero kung ako ang tatanungin mukhang eco-tourism din...
Should be Freeze. Guimaras plays an important role in region's eco-tourism as well and besides Guimaras is much better when it comes to income-wise since they're not included in the unfortunate 44. It only shows how thriving Guimaras economy is. I'm sure Guimaras will go for eco-tourism as they have white sand beaches, too. And the place is an absolute big park where everyone can go picnic. I'm not from Guimaras either but I just simply adore the natural beauty of this province. And since Guimaras was once part of Iloilo, we should help them attain their full potentials as well.
marsleg March 27th, 2006, 02:31 PM Yeah, hopefully I could be a good politician since I'm planning to be one in the future. I'm not contented with the current condition of the nation. lol
good thing Sinjin. Who knows? It's a big wide world full of opportunities. So long as your intentions are clean and for the good of everybody, then go for it!

kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 02:39 PM Thank you Kirby. Like I said, I'm just lurking at times. Sometimes, reading from a mere post is just enough to make my day for good. I wished I'll have the luxury of time to stay here in the forum longer. But i'll try my best, mate. You might be surprised to see me here more often than you think I could.
it'll be nice to see you here from time to time. If there's anything you want to comment or share your ideas for the good of Iloilo, feel free to post. I'm sure a good suggestion from any Ilonggos is an absolute positive count. Just be aware of some super-typhoon .. lol. You'll sure will have a good laugh gid.
JonJon75 March 27th, 2006, 02:48 PM HANJIN IN PAVIA
HANJIN Heavy Industries and Construction Co. has decided to locate its five-hectare plant and field office in the progressive town of Pavia. The giant firm, one of the biggest industrial companies in South Korea, will construct Package I of the Iloilo Flood Control Project at the cost of P1.2 billion in three years, funded by Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC). It will cover two Pavia rivers and Jaro floodway. This will surely boost the economic activities in Pavia. Congrats to Mayor Cadio Gorricetta!
Another milestone for Pavia's ever growing industrial bid. Looks like Pavia is getting more and more investments lately. It's becoming an eye-candy of every businessmen and investors in SouthEast Asian Region. Hope to see Pavia hosting more heavy industries such as this in the future. I believe that there's aplenty of space in Pavia to cater all of them. Go Pavia !
chymera00 March 27th, 2006, 02:49 PM http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/27/muelle.jpg
If plans won't miscarry half of this stretch of road known as Muelle Loney will be turned into a night market area beginning March 31. City Mayor Jerry Treñas believes the night market would further the city's economic progress.
from thenewstoday.info
I'm hoping that this won't end up just like the wet markets in Iloilo, if they really want to promote this place into a tourist attraction the least they can do is to properly develop the area first.

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloLocation.jpg
Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/visayasaerial.jpg
Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloBannerMalls.jpg
Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/RomanCatholicChurches.jpg
Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.
http://static.flickr.com/20/72437183_8e78d18fdf.jpg?v=0
Iloilo province is primarily the commercial and trade center of Western Visayas, with commercial, industrial development and rural banks, financial and investment houses, insurance companies, and realestate agencies and developers. Nevertheless, agriculture is the province's main source of livelihood. In fact, Iloilo's production of rice, sugar and mango has made it one of the country's top agricultural producers.
http://static.flickr.com/25/93600246_b6b952a8c8.jpg?v=0
The city's population represents a big manpower pool and a growing consumer market. Purchasing power is generally high given the favorable income distribution in Iloilo. Assuring the business sector of a steady supply of multi-skilled manpower are the city's 30 tertiary schools and 6 universities.

Iloilo's is a byword for its famous festival - the Dinagyang, a local mardigras. Held every January in honor of the Infant Jesus, the festival is a major tourist attraction.

Another even Iloilo is known for is the Paraw Regatta. Which is participated in by local and foreign sportsmen.

marsleg March 27th, 2006, 03:00 PM This is an impressive second project of Sta Lucia Developers in Iloilo.
I guess Savannah will have more competitors to come. Few more years, puno na ang Oton and Pavia nang subdivisions. Monte Rosa looks really promising. And these three subdivisions Savannah, Monte Rosa and Providence are just five-minute drive away from each other. It seems that there's a shift of residential development from Jaro-Leganes area to Mandurriao-Jibao-an-to-Oton-Pavia. It's a good move to cushion further congestion along Jaro-Leganes side. I hope to see more residential and commercial establishments lining the Jibao-an road. It's really a good site for development.
marsleg March 27th, 2006, 03:04 PM I'm hoping that this won't end up just like the wet markets in Iloilo, if they really want to promote this place into a tourist attraction the least they can do is to properly develop the area first.
I do agree with you Chymera. There should be a strict implementation of rules and ordinances should they consider the Iloilo Night Market as a potential crowd and tourists drawer. Hopefully restos and cafe's will line the Muelle Loney area in the future, say 1-2 years from its opening. And warehouses within the area at present will be relocated in Pavia or Oton municipalities. Or they can locate in Dumangas area, too since there was a plan to extend the LOBOC INTERNATIONAL PORT to Dumangas vicinity.

kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 03:09 PM Hotel del Rio beefs up management, marketing
By Kathy Villalon Cinco
FOR a business to stay competitive, it has to open itself to linkages with others. Such networking could help one improve the business's performance, boost its reputation, products, and staff skills as well as make access to information and support easier.
Realizing the value of becoming a more competitive hotel, Hotel del Rio, once family-run is now being managed by Hotelink, a management company started by no less than Patrick Gregorio, the man said to have played a big role in boosting Cebu's tourism.
A seasoned hotelier and travel expert, Gregorio's expertise and that of the team behind Hotelink opens more opportunities for Hotel del Rio to become a world-class hotel that the owner, the Loring family, wants it to be.
An Ilonggo by birth who spent years in Cebu and Davao, Gregorio during a recent press conference at Hotel del Rio said, "Hotelink is Filipino-managed and we understand the culture and values of the owner as well as the community."
Now on its 40th year, Hotel del Rio expects a more aggressive marketing and better profit under this network.
Hotelink manages other hotels in different cities like Manila, Cebu, Davao, and Bohol. It's also an affiliate of Global Link that exists in Cebu, Manila, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan.
"So, Hotel del Rio will have representations in these key cities," Gregorio said.
Hotel del Rio will also be part of Asia Travel.com soon. This is the real time Internet affiliate that with just one click can lead a traveler to his or her desired destination and accommodations.
With this new partnership, Hotel del Rio will be more accessible to markets in Cebu, Manila, Davao and Asian countries, which are the primary target market.
Hotel del Rio will also be networked with Cebu Pacific's Hotel Plus, making it a part of the airline company's Fun Tours programs.
Gregorio revealed that T&G Tourism Development Corp., the sister company of Hotelink, is the exclusive ground handler of all Cebu Pacific routes.
"So, being a part of Hotelink results to management made easy," Gregorio said.
Presently, those networked with Hotel Link are Parklane International in Cebu, Sylvia Manor in Bacolod City, Amarela Hotel in Panglao, Bohol and a marketing affiliate in Flashing Meadows, Panglao, Bohol.

kirby21 March 27th, 2006, 03:20 PM that's it. I topped the list ... and that's all that matters. Yoohoo ! Bow.
Sinjin P. March 27th, 2006, 03:26 PM A jewel of the Orient South, and the origin of Ilonggos’ folk, wisdomJaro Belfry and tradition. Iloilo has so much to give for the people to see and appreciate, most of all the engaging smiles of the Ilonggas.
What does it mean to be hailed as the Queen City of the South? With all the majestic and historical sights that abound Iloilos' colorful experience and tradition. No doubt, one will truly savor and enjoy all the lustrous traditions and practices of having the Ilonggo spirit. Coming to Iloilo, one will certainly be thrilled by the scintillating sights of the beautiful beaches where the sand, sea and sky provide comfort and relaxation after a weeks' strenous and consuming work. Tourist attractions include the white-sand beaches that abound our shores and islets, crystal clear waters, and coral reefs to comfort the soul of every individual. Delicacies are also abundant, to name a few, we have Pancit Molo, Biscocho, and the ever celebrated La Paz Batchoy.
In Iloilo, antique mansions built during the Spanish era still abound. A reminiscence of events of the past. Ilonggos' are humble and pietful yet grandiose. Exquisite churches are also commonplace. The locals are actually quite vibrant party-people, though conservatism is still imbued in them.
There are lots of festivities and events Ilonggos look forward to every year; one is Dinagyang, a vibrant and exotic expression of artistry, rhythmic dance coupled with drum-beating. The Ilonggo spirit penetrates in every place capturing the essence of faith by offering the feast to Sr. Sto. Nino, the patron saint of the Ilonggos.

kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 01:39 AM I agree, what Iloilo really need right now is a strong industrial economy, dito lang kase tayo kulang. Compared to other Philippine cities, Iloilo has no industrial economy to speak of :)
I agree. We need to raise our industrial bid. Pavia, Oton and Leganes are few of the best places to locate all these industries. It'll be healthier if competition arises from these municipalities. Besides, Oton and Pavia is leading a population explosion in our province respectively. It's high time for them to entice investors to build industries in their towns. Although Pavia had all the necessary equipments and tools in site, Oton I guess is not that far to grab the bid.
gani, I've been visiting the site everyday ever since I discovered it. I wonder kung sino ang nag put up sag site, MIDC? perhaps
I want to see it updated soon. It's a good source of information for any investors and businessmen who wanted to invest in our province. I'm sure it'll play a vital role in presenting incentives, availability and accessibility of these component towns to the main hub, which is Iloilo City.
Tani sugudan na subong build sang at least 3 lane highway (on both sides), to cater to future growth. Maybe in the future they will be having a hard time expanding the roads because of congestion. Basi flyover2 nman gua ta.
there's a plan expansion but when will they start doing it is still a limbo to everyone. I hope they'll fasttrack these roads development.
I hope so too ...
that's an initial plan of PPA-WV-Iloilo. I hope it will be materialised soon.
Thanks Sinjin ... its a very sparkling intro ;)

kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 01:46 AM Kirby, you're right to say about the land area thingy.
I agree migs. I think house-and-lot is more convenient to any of us working here abroad. Sulod ka lang pag tapos na tuod. Besides, we're not good in designing. It's not my cup of tea. Iba siguro nga desenyo ti pwede eh. So Jon, are you planning? Hambala lang ko kay basi interesado man ta para tupaday ta to tanan. :)

Virtute March 28th, 2006, 02:23 AM Just want to share a shot I took on Jan 11,2006 in Robinson's, Iloilo.
I wished they would keep the plants they're selling around the fountain
because it makes the mall look much nicer.

Sinjin P. March 28th, 2006, 02:44 AM Btw, I'd just like to clarify, is SM Delgado 2 storeys? Is it a mini-mall with a department store, supermarket and some few shops?
Another thing, I'm still disappointed with the official website of the city government of Iloilo, it still isn't updated! :D

Hi Sinjin. Thanks for starting our thread 12.
SM Delgado in Iloilo City Proper area is a two-storey mini-mall lang. It looks humungous but the size is just a fourth or third of the total leasing area of SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao district.
Btw, you're right to say that ILOILO CITY OFFICIAL WEBSITE is outdated. I don't know why they're not so keen to develop it. I wish it'll be upgraded soon.

Yeah, despite the national governments contest for web design of all the local governments web page, they still aren't encouraged. Maybe the cash prize isn't enough for the webmaster.

Maybe not .. hehehe. I have no idea with the web design contest. I guess Iloilo City should start hiring a better webmasters then. We (me and Chymera) tried emailing them but we couldn't get through. Something is wrong with that webpage, which is not pleasing to the eye of the reader. It will never tick you at all. It just simply looks awful and discouraging. Maybe we'll ask Bombo Radyo Main (Iloilo) to do some criticising about it. By then then the webmasters will be up and about with what they did, and probably change it.
kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 03:14 AM Businesses and personalities in Iznart Street, 1930s
Iznart Street is the longest artery of the heart of downtown Iloilo City. It is long thoroughfare full of business and commercial establishments ranging from hotels, appliance stores, food shops, hardware stores, textile enterprises, defunct movie theaters, clothing stores, banks, law offices, and many more. It is also home to three educational institutions - Cabalum Western College, Iloilo Central Commercial School, and the University of Iloilo.
Iznart used to be a muddy street where bull carts and calezas roamed. It became largely a business district beginning with the late 19th century, spawned mainly by Chinese immigrants, even until today. In the book, Chinese Merchant Families in Iloilo: Commerce and Kin in a Central Philippine City (1981) by John Omohundro, it is said that these immigrants occupied Iznart Street from the junction of Solis Street to Rizal Street. These Chinese, depending upon their places of origin in China, had surnames such as Tan, Uy, Ong, Chua, Go, Ya, Sy, Chu, Huan, Ang, Yu, Po, Cheng, Yap, Sun, Lim, etc.
To foster, promote and encourage trade, commerce and agriculture in Iloilo, a business organization was established by the Iloilo Chinese in 1924. This was the Iloilo Chamber of Commerce. In June 1935, the constitution of the Chinese-Filipino Association was approved and somehow replaced the Iloilo Chamber of Commerce. This organization was composed of prominent Chinese and Filipinos whose objective was the extension and consolidation of the social and economic relationships between the two peoples. Its first president was Eriberto Gonzales and the vice-president was Enrique Sua Boc San. The members coming from Iznart Street were Chua Lian Hong, Tan Chun Kee, Chua Gan, Chua Chu, Kua Eng Chiong, Ong Seng, Ong Tong Guan, and Tong Juan (David, 1937).
In the 1930s, the business establishments operating at Iznart were listed to be 142 in number (David, 1937). Of these, 41 were owned by the Chinese and 5 were operated by the Japanese. The establishments ranged from sari-sari stores, carinderia, dry goods, glassware, jewelry stores, tailoring, bakery, photo shops, printing press, hardware, lumber stores, repair shops, mining, to general merchandise.
Many professionals also had their offices in Iznart Street to provide services for the people. There were 3 dentists, 2 civil engineers, 16 lawyers, 6 pharmacists, and 6 physicians (David, 1937). What is interesting in these figures is the large number of the lawyers in the area. There may have been many disputes over property, or else, crimes. There was also a good number of physicians and pharmacists. The Ilonggos truly valued their health and well-being.
Iznart Street was a microcosm of the City of Iloilo at that time. The street in the 1930s was already full of cars, calesas, bullcarts and bicycles. Every tailor had cloths to sew, every sari-sari store had a costumer, every lawyer had a case to settle and every carpenter had a building to construct. The city was busy. It was, at that time, the "Queen City of the South."

kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 03:24 AM City night market starts on March 31
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY
ILOILO City – Despite the opposition of some vendors on the establishment of a night market in the metropolis, the city government will go ahead with the plan on the 31st of March.
Around 160 vendors have already applied for night market kiosks at Muelle Loney, revealed Mayor Jerry Treñas.
During the inaugural day, the city government plans to stage some events in the area to create public awareness on the night market.
Treñas said the night market aims to spur more the city’s economy and tourism industry.
Aside from Muelle Loney, other areas eyed as sites of the night market are JM Basa Street, Aldeguer Street, Guanco Street, J. de Leon Street, Iznart Street, Quezon Street, Arsenal and Yulo Streets.
The night market begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m.
Treñas said additional lights have been installed in the area already.
One side of the long stretch of Muelle Loney will be for vendors selling general merchandise while the other side shall be for vendors selling foodstuff.
The night market area shall be closed to vehicular traffic on weekends, from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight.
The city government will provide sufficient police visibility and portable public toilets in the area.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod may cancel the permit of any grantee (kiosk owner) caught violating certain market rules.

Here's Plaza Libertad. It's actually kept well. There could be some improvements like centralized water sprinkler system. Right now its a man with a drum wagon and a "cabo" and waters the plants manually, one by one. At least they could have offered him a hose? He does this with the grass also.. he sprinkles them manually.

marsleg March 28th, 2006, 03:47 AM ^^ I like the Robinson's Place colours. Very alive and enticing. Thanks for sharing your pics with us, Virtute. On the other hand, I guess your right to say that at least they provided a hose for this old man to be used in watering plants in Plaza Libertad. Suffice to say, San Jose Church stands tall and proud indeed. It's where I go or attend Sunday masses back home in Iloilo City.

Muelle Loney is just a meter away and I hope the area will see a splurge of economic activity compliments of the Iloilo Night Market project. I've known from Wecky last year that the Muelle Loney road towards the Customs House is under reconstruction. Any idea?

Kirby I believe they titled Iloilo "la muy leal y noble" was because the "ayuntamientos" of Iloilo Proper and Jaro condemned the revolution/rebellion that was happening in Manila back in 1896, that it was "un-patriotic" of them to go against the spanish government or "madre españa." That is how if I can remember why Iloilo was titled "the most loyal and noble city."
Aguinaldo and the insurrectos were not winning the war so they made a treaty with the Spaniards in the so called "Biak na Bato Treaty." And all their leaders exiled to Hong Kong. Only when Aguinaldo came back and independence was close that Iloilo realized this and joined the revolution, led by General Quintin Salas and General Martin Delgado, 12,000 soldiers some in their "rayadillos" stripe uniforms paraded into Iloilo and held official celebration in Plaza Libertad. The surrender ceremony of the spaniards was very respectful, a proof that Filipinos were not savages as some Americans claimed.
I wish I have the old pics of them standing in the plaza back in 1898. They are really rare pics.
METROPOLITAN_ILOILO March 28th, 2006, 05:13 AM One of the best suggestions, Metro. I guess it's high time for them to get involve, one way or the other. It's kinda nice to hear opinion directly from the horse's mouth. Well, I hope he'll spare a little bit of their time to have a chat with us here. :) (shhakinggg)

It's too historical to note the inscription til the present and it'll take a good while to study Iloilo's history and culture way back then. I guess you're right to say about the inscription, etc. It must be our loyalty to Spain which made us gain the title of sort. :)

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO March 28th, 2006, 05:25 AM City night market starts on March 31

Sorry kirby, that was only my thoughts about the title. The inscriptions in Plaza Libertad is totally different. Its like any other monument in our country LOL, honoring Jose Rizal, but it has some phrases there that honor the Ilonggos which for me is very note worthy.
wecky March 28th, 2006, 05:31 AM By the way...Congrats to the XII Thread!
Hala Bira ILOILO! hehehe 2 days lang ko nadula XII thread na and i have to read 7-8 pages.
Madamo gid nga Salamat sa tanan.
Hopefully Nielette and Hon. Jed would join us soon. I already sent the invivtation via friendster.
This is really one good idea hearing from them...
Nice meeting all of you guys...esp to chym, lewd and kirby who did invite me here!
:)
i haven't been to read thread 11 yet. I was just informed by Kirby by PM that we're in Thread 12 na ... hehehe. I'll catch up na lang siguro but 7-8 pages will take a lot of time to read ... scanning na lang siguro.

No probs, Virtute. I think you're right with this, I guess. But mind you, I might go with Spanish inuendos during that time. lol.
Anyway, I'll wait for your post regarding these inscriptions. Maybe there's a little note on top of each of them which says, "nota bene" .. he he he.

LOL, kirb, I hope I didn't sour the title "La Muy Leal y Noble Cuidad de Iloilo" for you. It is a nice title, nevertheless. But at least you might see it in a different perspective. Those were the times our forefathers lived in. The most important part is that at least the Ilonggos did join the revolution against Spain later on and supported the gov't of Aguinaldo and resisted American occupation. That I am proud of.
METROPOLITAN_ILOILO March 28th, 2006, 05:50 AM I do miss this area of the city. I haven't been there for a long time. Probably more than six years na. Though last year, we passed by it on our way to Fort San Pedro but haven't had a chance to sit on its benches all along. Maybe next time.

No probs, Virtute. It's a good title and like it that way. :) We learned a lot from our forefathers, of things we'll always be proud of. I think it runs in our blood as a true-blue Ilonggos.

chymera00 March 28th, 2006, 07:11 AM Btw, I'd just like to clarify, is SM Delgado 2 storeys? Is it a mini-mall with a department store, supermarket and some few shops?
Another thing, I'm still disappointed with the official website of the city government of Iloilo, it still isn't updated! :D
It was supposed to be a 4 story mall, which would have had an entertainment center somewhere in the 3rd-4th floors but it didn't push through because of the concern of the land being too soft in the downtown area.
whyte March 28th, 2006, 08:12 AM sa mga pictures ni ARK sa page 2, I now realize how rich jm basa street is in terms of heritage buildings.from the obelisk to plaza libertad damu damo gid buildings.

That has always been the excuse given. I think that the Iloilo market is the most saturated amongst the medium sized cities. That is probably the reason why they didn't go ahead and build it 4 storeys high. You could always use Piles to compensate for soft land in marshlands and reclaimed areas. Makati was a marshland and look at the high-rise buildings there. Just wondering about Gaisano City. I still lived in Iloilo at the time when it was being constructed. I never saw a single pile being driven into the earth at that site. Am I right? It sure is one tall mall. Six storeys right? I think it is high time the developers started moving to Passi City just to make it more progressive. The other island has several good sized cities and Panay only has Iloilo and Roxas to speak of. J.Q. it is about time to put up a big branch in Passi City.
whyte March 28th, 2006, 08:30 AM the other version of the story i heard, is that SM still leases that land and part of the contract was no taller than 2 storeys lang ang pwede na building dyan
SM is still SM
almost all ilonggos nagDAKU sa SM unlike i nsome other cities na they had their local dept.

No problem with having local Department stores. Lopue's is good enough for Bacolod. CDO is extremely proud of their Limketkai. Davao, its NCCC and of course Cebu - Gaisano. The advantage of having local startups is that they don't drain away money from the local economy. Good thing SM's new mall in Bacolod is not too big... so Lopue's will have some room for a major mall in the future. Just a bit disappointed that they are not as aggressive as the Limketkai Group, Gaisano, and NCCC. Of course Iloilo has Iloilo Supermart. JQ, I think its about time you guys renamed it Iloilo Hypermart... it is good enough to be a hypermarket. If you need to know more about hypermarkets, search for Carrefoure on the internet.
kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 08:47 AM Your suggestion is good Dinho but seems inappropriate to any of us.

Dinho March 28th, 2006, 08:55 AM Your suggestion is good Dinho but seems inappropriate to any of us.
My suggestion was addressed to J.Q. That is why its not appropriate to any of you. I was just hoping my old friend will stumble onto this forum...
kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 08:59 AM I hope so. You can either email or call your friend to contact him directly. Unless he's a member of this forum, then your hope might probably comes true. And btw, what is JQ?
daks2003 March 28th, 2006, 09:25 AM Im not sure though if SM is still leasing from the Jamoras but I do know that part of the contract of SM with the Jamoras when they constructed the new SM Delgado is that SM will not put up or have tenants that will directly compete with the Marymart Mall Foodcourt tenants or any of the Food/Resto tenants of the Jamoras(including la sallete bldg)...so I guess they are still leasing from the Jamoras coz they are honoring that contract, otherwise they could have built a food court like what they had before the renovation.
If the planned entertainment center would push through, the area which ICAG occupies is the location according to a forumer here. He already mentioned about that in the earlier threads.

I don't think there's much improvement happening in MAKRO-Iloilo lately. We were there last year as well. Same old stuffs. MAKRO is definitely good when you're planning of holding a party. You buy bulks of goods in lower or discounted prices. Okay man siya ah.

Sinjin P. March 28th, 2006, 10:27 AM Iloilo Milk Processing Plant inaugurated

I was suggesting they change the name to Iloilo Hypermart or Iloilo Hypermarket. Was hoping he would stumble onto this forum or that some other friend would see this. kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 11:05 AM Im not sure though if SM is still leasing from the Jamoras but I do know that part of the contract of SM with the Jamoras when they constructed the new SM Delgado is that SM will not put up or have tenants that will directly compete with the Marymart Mall Foodcourt tenants or any of the Food/Resto tenants of the Jamoras(including la sallete bldg)...so I guess they are still leasing from the Jamoras coz they are honoring that contract, otherwise they could have built a food court like what they had before the renovation.
If the planned entertainment center would push through, the area which ICAG occupies is the location according to a forumer here. He already mentioned about that in the earlier threads.
Can't wait for the extension, Daks. SM Delgado deserves a bigger space above anything else. If you'll look at the strength of two SMs in Iloilo (spare SM Jaro first), I believe that SM Delgado can rundown SM City's income kung market-base lang ang pag-estoryahan. SM Delgado is surrounded by almost all offices and banks in the city. Mas easier ang access niya coz walk-in lang halos tanan. Even three other major malls and few retailers are located within the not-so-distant area, mas thriving man gihapon ang SM Delgado income-wise.
marsleg March 28th, 2006, 11:07 AM ^^ ok Kirbs. I'll try. :)
lex_99 March 28th, 2006, 11:12 AM Enjoy Lex. You're always on vacation huh? Anyway, don't forget the pics and your "captured moments" or "kodak moments". I wish to spend my vacation back home as well. Semana Santa is always a good time to spend your holidays in Iloilo. :)
I definitely will Kirbs hehe... I miss spending semana santa in Calinog. Mas ok gd dd2, I remeber before every afternoon after class we join the way of the cross up Marikudo hills where the whole poblacion of Calinog is visible. Nice gd ang view dd2 very pristine, you can see rivers snaking out of the mountains. But parts of it is already well developed now (the lower part of the hill) as it is already converted into a residential area. :)

lex_99 March 28th, 2006, 11:44 AM Yep, Clientlogic is currently the 2nd largest US based call center after Convergys and ranked 4th in the world according to the January edition of BusinessWeek.
This was confirmed by my friend who works for Client. according to her the news about Iloilo expansion is already posted on their company Bulletin Board.

Sorry Kirbs.. laka lang ko gavisit sa Dinagyang.com. Ambot gani a 2 years na kmi ng grad la man gihapon amon yearbook hehe... tani ato na gd man to kag tani indi sa disapponting. Kmu enjoy man da sa Uk for sure ma get together man da kmu nga mga Ilonggos...
kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 11:52 AM Nice. :) Another welcome investment indeed. Any idea how many seater this call center will be? At the moment, ePLDT is the biggest call center in Iloilo with more or less 300-strong capacity. I hope they'll double their capacity to 600 in the future. The other two, I'm not familiar with them at all. Coz when I scanned Dinagyang, ePLDT Ventus (lang ang nakita ko) is looking for more reps pa for expansion.

We do call each other most of the time. Damo diri Ilonggos and damo gid kami magkaka-batch diri eh. At times batchmates namon sa US gakadto man di for a vacation. So, okay man ah. Btw, batch 1999 sang college? I think si Mars batch 1999 man. I'm not sure gid. I'll call her later.
lex_99 March 28th, 2006, 11:59 AM Nope Kirbs batch 2004 ako hehe... ECE. Sadya lang da sa inyo no... :) amo gd na kn dollars, euros or pounds ang sweldo very universal so you can travel anywhere whereas kon peso dri lang anay sa Pinas hehe... or if you can afford HK and BKK lang gd.
kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 12:08 PM What's BKK? Bangkok? Okay man Bangkok. We have few friends who went there for holidays. Okay gid kuno. British people loves Thailand. Phuket is the best place for them. I guess sa list sang British holiday makers, Thailand is on top five. No comment ako sa sweldo. It's out of my mind .. lol.
Sa sadya, sadya man di. We have the total freedom equal sa mga Britons man. Besides, two-month annual leave with pay is not too bad at all. :) But lex, if opportunity presents itself, grab lang. You wouldn't know the benefit kung indi mo i-try. Caution lang sa mga countries different from our belief. It's really frustrating.
Btw, kilala mo si Elmer Castante? Daw ECE man ina siya bala. Don't know kung ano siya nga batch.

I guess mga 600 seats cguro and this will be the biggest in Iloilo. Yep, ePLDT is gearing for expansion man, I guess ang prepaid account sang Smart Comm. (both technical and costumer service) is based there and their planning to transfer the entire Smart Prepaid account dra. So sa mga smart people chances are your calls are being routed to epldt in Iloilo. Im not sure kon ang building nga gna construct daw sa Smallville Business Center iya sang Client or ePLDT.
kirby21 March 28th, 2006, 12:14 PM Okay gid. I hope both of them will gear for 600-seat capacity. It'll be a good competition between call centers sa Iloilo in the future. :)

chymera00 March 28th, 2006, 02:36 PM Hi Sinjin.
Gani man. It's important that the city gov puts up a decent website to show that they are serious in their vision of Iloilo as the premier city of the Philippines.
At the very least nalang tani, they should've hosted it sa ad free nga web host and applied for a .com nga domain :). Ang iloilocity.gov.ph wala pa na claim, so maybe they are going to develop a new website guid man .... pero it has been a long time now, wala man gyapon. Unahan ko pa sila ubra, lol

Here's Plaza Libertad. It's actually kept well. There could be some improvements like centralized water sprinkler system. Right now its a man with a drum wagon and a "cabo" and waters the plants manually, one by one. At least they could have offered him a hose? He does this with the grass also.. he sprinkles them manually.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g57/virtute71/plaza_libertad_caretaker.jpg
At least ga hatag pa sila employment, hehe.
^^ I like the Robinson's Place colours.
My family used to go there to when I was a kid, pero subong I don't go with them already.
ma share man ako ka mga pics ko ah!

Got this from http://www.epldtventus.com/news.htm
Currently, Ventus is providing customer care services to the largest US-based floral wire service company. Once it reaches full capacity, the Ventus call center is expected to generate US$ 1.075 (maybe in million pesos ni siya) in annual net income and is seen to expand the Iloilo business to 1,000 seats by the end of 2006.

That's what I heard from a reliable source, I can't say that that's really the reason.
I don't think the land where Gaisano is constructed on cannot be compared to the one under SM Delgado because it's on the other side of the Iloilo River (where the land is more compact).
I don't know how reliable this map is but, I guess this will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

The Iloilo Customs House remains iconic to this day. Definitely one of Iloilo's symbol to date. Muelle Loney is just a meter away and I hope the area will see a splurge of economic activity compliments of the Iloilo Night Market project. I've known from Wecky last year that the Muelle Loney road towards the Customs House is under reconstruction. Any idea?

Its called Muelle Loney ... named after Nicholas Loney, said to be the father of the Philippine Sugar Industry. It has been an object of interest lately because it will be the site of Iloilo's first night market, which is scheduled to open on March 31.
