Civilized people's noses are just with them. On the other hand, people who aren't just keep on farting in other people's faces, even though they know it's not right. Well, they could keep on farting. It's their priviledge to do so. We could only tell them that it's not right, so many times.

If that doesn't work out, we could always cover our noses, even get out of the room.

I know him, aside of having a family name same as mine. We were together when we organized and created the 1st Iloilo Young Leaders Congress. Now I know what all he meant when we had an exchanged of arguments during the congress deliberations (He is a 5th yr EE student of CPU that time and I was on my 2nd yr in PolSci at WVSU). He is actually the brainchild of IYLC with the help of his fellow AYLC Alumni from WVSU who is our Chairperson in PolSci that time. Very inspiring indeed.

What AYLC batch are you? I'm '06... :D newbie here in Iloilo thread by the way but love your city.... :D

that was so acerbic! backread the whole thing and it's not as if the whole of iloilo forumers here even bothered about that petty comparison. if you have to spit on someone, would you even laugh about it? wow! to advance his case, he should have singled out forumers who were doing that and not the whole of iloilo.

May kilala man ako nga PMA grad nga taga-Iloilo nga most promising officer subong, wala sya diri sa Pilipinas subong. He was also handpicked by the UN to lead the peace corp sa gwa. One of the government agency regional directors sang Western Visayas also told me, sa tan-aw nya pila kaadlaw he will become the Chief of Staff of the PA or PNP Sec.

Second Lieutenant Roger Flores of the Philippine Marines almost did not see the future. As a toddler, he almost died from jaundice. But through prayers, with his mom even vowing to make him a servant of the Lord, Roger turned out to be not only a healthy young man, but one with a lot of promise and bright future ahead of him.

As a young child, Roger was a weakling who was constantly physically bullied by classmates. But he was more focused on helping his mother and sister survive a life of poverty. When his father left them, Roger’s mom, a laundrywoman, raised her children alone.

Fortunately, Roger had been a scholar from high school to college in Iloilo. In college, he worked as a computer laboratory assistant while finishing his BS degree in Electrical Engineering at the Central Philippine University. Although he wanted to become a soldier, Roger excelled in school and emerged as the Most Outstanding Electrical Engineering Graduate in 2005, and one of the Top 25 Marketing Management Trainees of the Philippines.

But his heart was somewhere else.

“I was dragging myself to work, walang satisfaction, routinary ang buhay ko. So I convinced my mother to allow me to follow my dream and I will make her proud by being a valedictorian or summa cum laude when I graduate,” shares the 25-year-old Roger who was confident that he could be his best person if he entered the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

PASSION WITHIN A PASSION

The rigid training and challenges inside the Academy proved to be a piece of cake for Roger who took every challenge as a step closer to his goal. His brief experience in the corporate world became a blessing in disguise.

“I believe pina-experience sa akin ni God yun para hindi ko na hanapin yung ganung buhay pag nasa PMA na ako at lalo kong masurvive lahat ng hardships,” he rationalizes.

True to his word, Roger topped his class in academics in his first two years. He even broke the highest grade point average of a first year cadet. But in third year, the emptiness once again set in. So he risked his academic standing by becoming more active in ungraded socio-civic/extra-curricular activities.

When cadets were only required to lead one organization, Roger led four!

Roger was head of the PMA Gawad Kalinga Coordinating Council, the Environmentalist Club, Karate Corps Squad, at the same time, he was the Deputy Brigade Commander of the Cadet Corps in his senior year.

Extra curricular work was not new to Roger. In college, he was vice corps commander of the CPU ROTC Unit, president of the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers CPU student chapter, chairman of the official student organization of Iloilo city national graduates, senator of the CPU Republic, and a delegate to the 6th National Ayala Young Leaders Congress.

In PMA, Roger spent weekends and vacations implementing programs for his organizations. One Christmas break, he brought a group of 27 cadets to conduct disaster relief operation to victims of typhoon Reming in Bicol under the Gawad Kalinga Luzon 2.

“Madalas nga nagkakasabay mga meetings at nawawalan na ko ng study time. So nagdedepend na lang ako sa classroom kung anong matutunan ko dun. That’s why I became only top three in my class pero ok lang. I would rather tell a story about my experiences sa mga socio-civic organizations ko rather than be a cum laude where the story ends there. Pero pag marami kang activities, marami kang natutulungan, mas fulfilling,” explains Roger.

GETTING THE TOSP

Being third in class, Roger was not even considered by PMA for the Search for Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP). The class valedictorian and salutatorian were the shoo-in.

But Roger earned the most credit for social responsibility, an important criterion in TOSP. Armed with only guts and a rich socio-civic experience, he managed to convince his superiors to send him instead. True enough, Roger became the first PMA cadet to receive the prestigious award.

“I didn’t apply to take the award for myself, but to represent PMA and the Armed Forces. My goal is to elevate the image of the military and get people’s support. I believe that if more people support the military, we will be more inspired to do our job,” he notes.

Upon receiving the TOSP plaque, Roger immediately brought it to the PMA where he felt it rightfully belonged.

“Nagtaka ang mama ko kung bakit ko pinamigay. Sabi ko kung dito ilalagay sa bahay sino makakakita kundi mga bisita, tayo-tayo. Pero kung nakadisplay sa PMA mas may impact at maari pang maging benchmark sa mga cadets that joining the TOSP can be done. Before it used to be a dream because of our very rigid training there is no time for socio-civic activities. I’m glad that I have made a trail for them. My real award will be when the time comes that another PMA cadet makes it to the TOSP because I paved the way for him or her,” he says.

Roger also reaped several citations from the PMA, including the Joint US Military Advisory Group Award; the Sports and Physical Development Unit Plaque for being the strongest cadet for SY 2007-2009 and obtaining the highest overall rating in all P.E. courses; the recipient of the Secretary of National Defense Saber Award; the Philippine Navy Saber Award for being flag officer-in-command; and the Philippine representative in the 11th International Cadets Conference, National Defense Academy in Japan in 2008.

Roger was also handpicked by the AFP to take the prestigious United States Marine Officer basic course for six months in Virginia starting this October.

THE RACE HAS JUST BEGUN

Despite all these accomplishments, Roger feels he is just on the starting line of the race, or rather at the beginning of a battle.

“A famous historical figure once said that being a soldier is not only enough that you’ve won the battle, the real victory is how you heal the wound of that battle. Something's gonna rise from that lot beside SM City Iloilo...The former Nes and Tat's area...I'm sure it's gonna revolutionize the way we define shopping in Iloilo...and will be contributing greatly with BPO spaces. Planned and designed by Palafox Associates. It's set (hopefully) to be finished by 2010 last quarter. ;) The name is there, the rendering is there. Can't say it till tomorrow morning...:D

Few days ago, I chanced seeing DOT Reg Dir Trompeta in a TV show sa IBC12.
Can't remember the other things he said since I just concentrated in the part where he presented the so called WESTERN VISAYAS COFFEE TABLE BOOK.
Based on what I saw it's a simple info sheet and photo collage of the best each province and city has to offer. not really in depth pero visually enticing.
Its not even a book but just a sort of magazine with only I estimate 20 pages more or less.
Then I called the DOT office and asked about. As usual the oen who answered me seemed clueless about it and instrcuted me just to visit their office

Which I did today.

Its my first time inside Hansel and Gretels hut aka DOT reg 6 office :lol: and nothing spectacular inside. I then was pointed t the man in charge. He said it's just on a limited printing and they already ran out of stock.
Besides the oens targetted are foreign VIPs, attaches,etc which seemingly is self explanatory. I even asked if ever pwede mabakal but good thing he said na it should be be free :lol:
Then i saw a host of brochures and asked if I can have one. he then said help yourself which i did LOL

Korek ka dyan! Indi kamo magpadala sang inyo balatyagon. Ako sang una ko nakita nag forum nga ini nag-alsa man ako dayon without knowing the rules and regulations. I know a lot of disheartening stories about these cities, how people particularly the politicians and other influential people play their respective roles to uplift and also dampen the cities which they favor or not. Grabe ang reaction ko dahil parang hindi totoo ang nabasa ko. But I made to realize that they are not important for Iloilo. In fact this can only bring faction and disagrrements between cities. Iin fact dapat gani magbinuligay kita. Let's talk development and whoever talks unfounded topics wala ginahimo kundi: 1) chismoso sya, 2) naga-paaway lang, 3) kulang sa basa, 4) kag damo pa. So development, development and development should be the contents of this forum. . .

The Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (ILEDF) will showcase Iloilo and Guimaras’ economic vibrancy and promising business prospects to investors during an investment forum at Hotel Intercontinental Manila in Makati on Friday September 4.

City Hall hits 78% revenue collection

THE Iloilo City Government is 78 percent of its collection target in the first seven months of 2009.

The City Treasurer’s Office collected P742,846,186 from January-July. Its target for this year is P958,494,995.

Business and other taxes topped the collections at P244,246,384 or 91 percent of the P269,360,000 target for the whole year.

Real property taxes collections amounted to P106,061,980 or 65 percent of P163,499,717 target for this year.
Non-tax revenue or various fees collected reached P72,318,298 or 92 percent of target P78,458,000.

The city-run public markets and slaughterhouse generated P28,645,866 or 83 percent of the target of P34,610,000.

City Hall also received P291,573,657 or 71 percent from the initial releases of its P412,506,278 Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share this year.

Iloilo BIDA march draws thousands, snarls traffic

A NATIONAL anti-drug campaign targeting children and the youth drew thousands of participants in Iloilo City Thursday.

“This is a historic march,” said Efraim Genuino, chairman of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR).

Genuino said that roughly 100,000 elementary students from the city and province of Iloilo joined the unity walk of Batang Iwas Droga (BIDA) program. However, the estimated crowd was only 10,000 to 15,000.
The march started from Jaro Plaza and culminated at Central Philippine University (CPU) where PAGCOR’s famed entertainment show The Wanders performed.

BIDA is anti-drug campaign launched in 2003.

Genuino said BIDA is prioritizing its awareness campaign towards elementary children to prevent them from getting involved in illegal drugs as drug pushers prey upon those who are already in high school.

He said that it is easier to mold the minds of younger children.

BIDA is also promoted by Department of Education (Dep Ed), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Department of Interior & Local Government (DILG), Department of Health (DOH), Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), and local government units (LGUs).

Yesterday’s BIDA event caused massive traffic in Jaro district and confusion among drivers and passengers from 1 pm to 6 pm.

ILOILO City – Local officials and business leaders under the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (ILEDF) will showcase the investment potentials of Iloilo and Guimaras in an investment forum in Manila on Friday.

ILEDF markets Iloilo as a premier investment destination.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the investment forum at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila aims to attract investors especially in information and communication technology, tourism and agri-business.

Recently, the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) described this city as “business-friendly” and cited its local government’s public governance strategies on constituency, organization, finance and infrastructure.

Treñas will be one of the presentors during the investment forum. The city government under his watch plans to revive the old downtown business district Calle Real, and improve the central market and ferry terminals, among others.

The city government is also seriously considering the proposal of Ilongga Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago to create an Iloilo Special Ecozone and Freeport.

At present, Iloilo boasts of an international-standard airport with excellent connectivity to Manila, Cebu and Davao, Treñas said.

All of these are underconstruction or nearly done projects.
And thats not yet complete.

Hoping all these constructions are coming to fruition. Tani may mga renderings man diri nga i-post para makita ta. I'm excited with all the developments and constructions ongoing sa city of Iloilo. Iloilo City's economy remains really bullish til the present. And inspite of anything, Iloilo City's economy thrives not only of minimal industries or investments, rather by all sorts of developments coming one after the other. Like BPO is just one of them but it does not define the city's economic stand. There's more to Iloilo City than the BPOs alone.

Regarding Florete....watch out for last quarter 2009. Something's gonna rise from that lot beside SM City Iloilo...The former Nes and Tat's area...I'm sure it's gonna revolutionize the way we define shopping in Iloilo...and will be contributing greatly with BPO spaces. Planned and designed by Palafox Associates. It's set (hopefully) to be finished by 2010 last quarter. ;) Plazuela de Iloilo is the name. :D

Regarding Megaworld...according to the insider, it was postponed due to the flood that affected Iloilo last year (Frank) and the global economic crisis. He said that it'll push through hopefully by 2010.

we'll see. if they are planning to build it very near SM and extend it to the former Nes n Tats or beyon, then it must be really huge. This could be a good competitor of SM City in the future.

Ayala? Let's wait for their plans. As I said before, they're more keen to invest in commercial rather than subdivisions here in Iloilo. Eventually, real estate of Ayala will come but today they are more focus on the commercial side in Iloilo City.

i haven't seen the rendering. I'll try to backread previous threads later. Pero if the area is within the former Iloilo Corporate Centre, I know where it is, and it's bit huge. Tupad lang gid sila sang SM City. So prior pa sang Megaworld, developments around the area will start to go full as well.

SM City towards the end will just be one of the buildings in the Diversion kung mag-start na tindog ini tanan. SM City is really recognizable tungod sa siya lang da dako sa Diversion plus separated siya kaayo even sa bustling Smallville area. Pero kung madayon ining kay Florete and ang sa Iloilo Scholastic Academy, I'm sure matabunan na ang developments sang SM especially if Florete will make it bigger and elevate it, sadya gid nga matuod.

Iloilo Boulevard: impressive structure. Hopefully maayo lang ang pag-develop nila sang commercial part facing the boulevard. Hotels, cafes, restos and condominiums are the most suitable businesses nga dapat ara along the boulevard.

yes. tama ka gid, Haldir. Two big secondary schools gid man ang ginapatindog sa may Diversion. Thinking one of them has a famous affiliation with the one in Manila. Ateneo will be soaring high in Iloilo and will definitely elevate the educational competitiveness of the city in secondary education --- just imagine the big names in secondary education --- UP, Ateneo and Philippine Science plus our local secondary schools nga kung indi mas dako pa gid kumpara diri. And hopefully, in the years to come, Ateneo will challenge the tertiary education in Iloilo, too. We have big universities here ... but we're still very much open to competition .. being the Region's Educational Centre.

If you want to sell your school in Iloilo and make it decent, dapat may ara ka gid campus. Although not as big as the present universities pero at least sa area where students could roam around and feel the proper academic climate.

Diversion area is simply a magnet of modern infras and buildings in the city. So then, Mandurriao will definitely be the centre of the city's business climate.

Apart from this Pazuela de Iloilo, I would like Florete to embark in the construction of bigger hotels as well. Something that they should have done in the past. Maybe the younger Floretes are more aggressive with making money hence these investments.

daw amo gid eh no? Smallville crowd is getting stronger by day. Gadugang lang dira businesses plus nagadamo ang visitors sang Smallville. From a previous line of restos, subong duwa na ang hotels dira plus ang dining area, dasig ang development. If ever the new construction will be a hotel, and a much taller one than the IBC and Medicus, then mahambal ko na gid nga baskog na gid ang Smallville. It's becoming a business nerve on its own right cos it commands business and investments. I hope to see offices sprouting near Smallville, too.

Grabe, it really is just awesome to read the developments. To see the pictures and know the many happenings in the city. It's just fantastic to read about the entry of Florete in the Real Estate Sector, the rumored entry of Ayala, the investment of MW, the accelerated progress of the Iloilo boulevard.

Hambal nila ila, Paris is beautiful, Rome is charming, New York is Bustling, Madrid is lovely, London is historical, St, Petersburg is magnificent...maybe iloilo, you may not be all that, but that is beside the point. I love you Iloilo because I am in love with you and it matters not to me whether as a city, you are beautiful or charming or lovely, in my eyes, you are simply the city where the heart is.

Mayo kay European-style nga design ang complex sang Florete, nami tane kun mga future structures nga patindogan sa city European/Spanish-inspired man kay bugal gid sang Iloilo ang iya rich history. Pareho sa Vigan nga ila Jollibee/Chowking design Spanish nga naga-complement sa ila to mga buildings.

With all this upcoming developments along Diversion Road, it's high time now to upgrade Diversion Road's aesthetics. My dream is to see it with landscaped center island and both sides lined with trees preferably acacia. Trees will take decades to grow but it's better to plant them now so that in 10 to 20 years, the highway will be in full bloom. And of course, put the power lines and comms cables underground.

Cheering for Iloilo and our local businessmen, too. We have bigger players locally, kulang lang sa ila are to take that risk to do a business. But I think they'll prove us wrong soon. They are moving .. slowly in the past, but lately, they are becoming apparently enthusiastic with the business climate in our city. The business is booming. Even the tax collection isdoing great. A 70+ % for half a year collection is absolutely awesome. If we'll do better, we can even raise the budget of the city to a double.

Plaza Libertad is one of my frustrations actually. We know it's a historical site and very significant in Iloilo's and Philippines' history but the place does not get attention it deserves. The park should be at least re-landscaped so that it will compel tourists to stay longer and enjoy the scenery. At the moment, once visitors see the historical marker, they don't bother to look other features within the plaza or stay awhile, because there's nothing much to see anyway or make them sit back and relax to savor the view. So skip they did and go to the next attractions nearby, like the San Jose Church. Plaza Libertad really needs tidying up and a facelift.

^^^^ nice to know that the banks are expanding as well. Dira sa SM City, no matter duwa ang BDO plus they do longer hours, gutok man gihapon. BDO needs to looks at other strategic areas in the city like Smallville, Mandurriao Plaza, Arevalo, and other metrotowns such as Oton, Pavia and Sta Barbara.

Pwede na gid ang Que's to venture in big businesses. They have Iloilo Supermarts sprouting all over the city for decades. It's high-time they build one huge mall or a hotel perhaps. Or a business complex that serves as their national headquarters for their various businesses. For now, ga amat-amat man sila, medyo aggressive na gane asta Indonesia lab-ot na.

Plaza Libertad is really awful. Especially now that City Hall of Iloilo is demolised, wala na sang nagakadto dira. Maybe next year, it'll start to attract other investors, too, kay matapos na siguro ang GSIS Building. So balik plaza na naman ang mga government employees for transactions.

I'm hoping for Que's to build their corporate city in Iloilo, too. Hopefully matabo ina. They already have some established businesses sa Iloilo and the rest of the Philippines. Maybe they can further push by venturing into corporate landscape. They can really deepen their stronghold in Iloilo City if they're up to build bigger businesses in the city.

It was actually the regulation eversince Diversion Road was completed... that property developments along the road are restricted to a few meters (someone here might know the exact set back) from the road's edge. It's good planning really for future widening of the road.

yes. Mas dasig ang development pakadto sa may airport area. I think we will be seeing more constructions along the road in the years to come. Ang Pavia is really banking sa ila real estate development then Oton and Sta Barbara is following really close. Kung baskog lang mayos sang pavia and sta barbara they can open their towns sa mga investors by giving them better tax holidays compare sa city. They can also teamwork of selling their towns sa mga investors in Manila and abroad.
