That has always been the excuse given. I think that the Iloilo market is the most saturated amongst the medium sized cities. That is probably the reason why they didn't go ahead and build it 4 storeys high. You could always use Piles to compensate for soft land in marshlands and reclaimed areas. Makati was a marshland and look at the high-rise buildings there. Just wondering about Gaisano City. I still lived in Iloilo at the time when it was being constructed. I never saw a single pile being driven into the earth at that site. Am I right? It sure is one tall mall. Six storeys right? I think it is high time the developers started moving to Passi City just to make it more progressive. The other island has several good sized cities and Panay only has Iloilo and Roxas to speak of. J.Q. it is about time to put up a big branch in Passi City.

Let me explain...There was no plan to construct a 4 storey SM Delgado. In fact SM right now builds new malls with just two storey the most...Even Mall of Asia's floor area are two storey's...SM Bacolod is just a single storey with a bridgeway for its second level, so is SM Clark, SM Sta. Rosa, SM Molino, SM Lipa and SM Muntinlupa...

Dinho, regarding foundtaion there are a lot of types of substructures or what we mostly call our building foundation. Very common is the pile foundation which takes advantage of soft soil to hit a more stable foundation down below... Gaisano City was built utilizing a mat foundation. The main principle of this type is the the law of bouyancy...although it is costly it is easy to construct.

Which J.Q. are you referring to? The older one or the younger?

Nag apprentice ka kanday J.Q.?

My suggestion was addressed to J.Q. That is why its not appropriate to any of you. I was just hoping my old friend will stumble onto this forum...

Actually, it's Wecky who knew him personally through CPU Forum, too, where there's a massive global involvement of alumni worldwide via CPU Computer Center in Engineering building. I met him once I guess. I think wala na siya sa CPU or part-time na lang siya. He's due to work in the New Iloilo Airport soon in Sta Barbara once it opened. There were few of them sent in Manila last year for six months training. He's in Wecky's friendster so I knew him a bit before I met him last year.

Kuya Kirby and Caloy, off duty na ako so hapit lang ko di sang makadali. What's with buying bulks in MAKRO .. hihihi. Feeling ko tuloy necessary ba talaga yan? Hihihi.

Speaking of Department Stores, palihog lang pahigad-higad ang mga indi kilala. I'm becoming too alienated sa mga ginaduso diri.

Chymera, so dayon na gali ang Iloilo Night Market? Ma-attend ka sang opening niya?

i, annual leave ko, and guess where i am now, in haywards heath. hehehehehe...

Necessary guid man kay medyo malayo kami ca main road. malayo tiangge, parehos man di bala, wala bisan isa ka tiangge, ca london ko lang ya makita. kagastos magtaxi. dugay man nga daan hulat jeep, bawing kami nga part cang jaro. man imol lang kami ya. cannot afford... may sale sa bh's... lol...

Gani man. It's important that the city gov puts up a decent website to show that they are serious in their vision of Iloilo as the premier city of the Philippines.
I concur. There's need more improvement on this area of development. Though Pavia is the RAIC of Western Visayas, it only houses several industries around the region. I hope that the Pavia local government should start moving now and start promoting their municipality to all industrial sectors of the country. Pavia remains very lame and conservative when it comes to marketing. Ga-asa pa sila gihapon sa Iloilo City. It's high time for them to move themselves.

At the very least nalang tani, they should've hosted it sa ad free nga web host and applied for a .com nga domain :). Ang iloilocity.gov.ph wala pa na claim, so maybe they are going to develop a new website guid man .... pero it has been a long time now, wala man gyapon. Unahan ko pa sila ubra, lol
Amo gid Chy. The webmasters' kinda busy siguro. It's so frustrating to look at the official website devoid of proper information and outdated. No one will take any interest of reading stuffs in there, two or three years ago pa.

At least ga hatag pa sila employment, hehe.
I agree. Employment is the vital point above anything else.

My family used to go there to when I was a kid, pero subong I don't go with them already.
are you referring to Plaza Libertad, Chy? It still looks good and green. I do like to stroll there once in a while when I'm in Iloilo.

Thanks for the pics ... especially sa Calle Real

Thank you so much. These buildings are still existing .. standing proud an tall.

Thanks guid Metro ... it will be a very good thing nga mabal-an man nila ang hopes, wishes, and sentiments ta of Iloilo City ... as long as wala lang, ah NM
good idea, Metro. Jed is a no.1 councilor of the city right now. He ought to listen to people's cry :) .

Do you guys log-on sa forum in the hospital? basi kung ano na to matabo sa patients niyo, hehe ... just joking
he he he. The ward usually had 4-6 computers in a row depending what department you're on. The setting is quite the same as the SLR in WVSUMC (Nigthingale style - where you can see all the patients). Everyone has the full access to the net should new researches come up or any querries from the patient could be surf through the intranet of the hospital or the worldwide web. Also, the hospital net is directly connected to several libraries across the nation including universities where the NHS is affiliated.

Add pa ang Echo-service
(from http://www.kabankalancity.gov.ph/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=46&posts=1)

kag according to http://www.iloiloinvestment.org/ website, may ara 1 medical transcription firm sa Iloilo, but I'm not familiar what it is ...

Curious lang ko kung diin located ang IV, and Echo-service. I only know that eVentus is located in the Iloilo Supermart in Molo and Callbox is in 2nd Floor Emmanuel Business Center Benigno Aquino Avenue, Diversion Road
All of them are promising indeed. Business people are starting to keep on eye with Iloilo City's development. Proofs are numbers of call centers in Iloilo right now plus all other businesses starting to relocate their offices in our city and province. I guess we've never sleeps too bad. Progress can't be denied at all everywhere in Iloilo.

Got this from http://www.epldtventus.com/news.htm

Currently, Ventus is providing customer care services to the largest US-based floral wire service company. Once it reaches full capacity, the Ventus call center is expected to generate US$ 1.075 (maybe in million pesos ni siya) in annual net income and is seen to expand the Iloilo business to 1,000 seats by the end of 2006.

And from clientlogic.com
ClientLogic is a top five global Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) provider. ClientLogic’s global footprint is anchored by our right-shore strategy, which focuses on providing the right services to the right customers from the most appropriate locations. Our consistent service quality across channels, media and countries helps our clients:
I wish they'll reach a thousand seats by the end of this year. I've heard from a friend that there's a continue hiring of staffs for ePLDT Ventus right now. And I hope that with Clientlogic erecting its call center in the city in few months time, more competition amongst the call centers will be felt. Good employment naman for our kasimanwas.

I agree migs. I think house-and-lot is more convenient to any of us working here abroad. Sulod ka lang pag tapos na tuod. Besides, we're not good in designing. It's not my cup of tea. Iba siguro nga desenyo ti pwede eh. So Jon, are you planning? Hambala lang ko kay basi interesado man ta para tupaday ta to tanan. :)
I agree. Less pa bayad kay wala ka-architect nga sululhan. As long nga may tulugan ka, ayos na ina. Anhon ta malang dalagko balay nga wala man unod bulsa ta. I'm sorry but I view things in a different light. Mas importante ang akon pitaka kay LV siya ... har har har.

Interested? Might be. For the sake of art and friendship. No plans of going back home pero I guess there's no harm to get one. It's an investment and at least I have a house of my own na. We'll just hire a cleaner na lang every weekend eh. Daw pareho man di bala ah.

I'll tell you in few months time, Kirbs. You'll never know basi ma-convince man ako sang iban di, ti kuha eh. :)

@lex_99, I don't know if I'll answer this one... hehehe. I don't like naming names here at all. But of course, I knew the person very well. He's a good friend of mine. He's a good help sa akon when it comes to computer things kay indi man gid expert iya. It's not my field of work at all. You'll probably smile sa akon kay kung may mga pamangkot ako about computers, I asked my friends around the globe ... hehehe. Dayon ko IM dayon sa ila. But anyhow, he's a nice person. And basi part time na gid man siya sa CPU subong especially now nga manug-open na ang airport sa Sta Barbara.

Pavia, chosen as the Regional Agro-Industrial Center (RAIC) of Western Visayas, is a 1,109 hectare estate established during the Aquino Administration. Among the firms located in Pavia are Coca-Cola, Vitarich, San Miguel, Kimwa Corporation, Love Feeds, and Manadue Foam

The most feasible business to locate in Pavia include agri-based industries; garment manufacturing; houseware production and gift toys; machinery and equipment manufacturing; packaging and canning; and electronics and chemical products manufacture.

Question lang ... does have any idea what the Pavia Industrial Estate is and it's status?

naka post siya abi sa ini nga page:
http://www.lopezandpartners.com/summary%20of%20projects.htm
Thanks for sharing the pics Chymera. You almost captured all industries around this municipality. there's few more others pa pero these five are the biggest contributor of all.
I "guess" Pavia Industrial Estate is owned by the Lopezes of Iloilo (former Cong. Albertito Lopez). The ongoing construction of the new Bagsakan Terminal cum Central Iloilo Transport Terminal in Pavia at present is managed and owned by Tito's family.

MAKRO - ILOILO, one of the best wholesaler in Iloilo province. :)

We keep on talking SM, Robinson's, Iloilo Supermart, etc. and we forgot to mention sang iban .. damo na kita nalipatan di. I think the other good retailer at present in Iloilo City is the COSCO - ILOILO. Btw, did anybody hear about the ILOILO SOCIETY (store ha)?

who would forget the Lover's Lane in Port San Pedro, Metro ... hehehe .. but it's really romantic watching the sunset along the area. Pag gab-i damo da gabaligya balot, mani, etc ... hehehe. May live band pa kung Sat or Sun or lately bala daily na pero indi man gid maayo. Rotary park is nice .. but it's just too small lang gid. My family used to frequent the place late '80's pero subong wala na gid. I've been there once lately .. and yes, namit man gihapon ila luto .. chicken skin is one of the best .. and chicharon with San Mig. Ayos gid.

Btw, where in the area ang may plano patindugan museum? Tani i-develop na gid nila ang area turning it into a big park. Mas matawhay pa.

Ang sa may San Ag, I haven't been there yet and so with the one in La Paz area. Try lex and hambal lang kami kung manamit man. I'm sure the baked spag is grand.

Iloilo Milk Processing Plant inaugurated

TIGBAUAN, Iloilo -- The province of Iloilo would soon be put in the map as one of the Dairy Zones in the country.

Good news for the entire province. At least we have our own Milk Processing Plant here in Iloilo. It's more of a benefit to have this kind of industry considering the children and adults nutritional stats will be improved. Setting aside the commercialism and employment this plant can generate along Tigbauan area and the entire First District.

That's right Daks. Binalewala na nila ang MAKRO. I do shops in MAKRO especially may handaan. It's convenient and its cheaper. Anyway, thanks for bringing it up here.

Mas barato pa gid na diri ang mga baligya hambal nila. So just in case anyone here plans a party, damo na kita pili-an kung diin magbakal. he he he.

Internal Revenue office in Iloilo City exceeds collection in 2 months
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE Bureau of Internal Revenue District 74 in Iloilo City under Revenue District Officer (RDO) Jona Ruth Alonte has exceeded its tax collection for two months.

Alonte said Tuesday that from the month of January to February his office was able to collect P415.7 million with P100.9 million excess or 32.04 percent compared to last year's collection of P134 million.

In January alone, District 74 has collected P186 million with P52 million increased or 38 percent compared to last year with only P134 million.

Alonte said their total target this year has reached to P3.4 billion, which is higher, compared to last year with P2.4 billion.

The P3.4 billion is only a part of P675.4 billion collection target in a year in the whole country.

Alonte said they are trying their best to reach their target as they appeal to the tax payers to pay their taxes promptly and help the government's programs in order to help the country's economy.

"We are appealing to the good businessmen in Iloilo City and other tax payers to help and cooperate with us because we don't want to exert drastic move against them," Alonte said.

"This is for love of our country. We should be considerate and learn to love our country," she added.

However, Alonte said that one way of reaching their target is the tax collection campaign through the help of the media and posters to inform the public of their responsibility.

"So far we are doing well and some tax payers are paying well but we need to double our efforts to reach our quota," she added.

JBLCF-Arevalo awarded for best quality management
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation Arevalo Incorporated has recently been awarded the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) for commitment to quality management during the 8th PQA awarding ceremony.

JBLCF as a leading institution in maritime training was among the four organizations being awarded this year and one of the three higher education institution awardees in the history of the PQA.

It is also the only maritime college and the first institution outside of Metro Manila given the award.

During the awarding last March 15, 2006 at the Grand Ballroom in Manila the JBLCF-Arevalo was recognized as best in quality management along with the University of Sto. Tomas Centro Escolar University and NYK Fil Ship Management Inc.

The PQA is the highest level of recognition for exemplary organizational performance established through Executive Order (E.O.) number 448 by then President Fidel Ramos and institutionalized through R.A 9013, otherwise known as the Philippine Quality Award Act signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on February 28, 2001.

This award is given to organizations in the public and private sectors that excel in quality and productivity, it also uses an international comparable framework and criteria for assessing organizational performance, that of the Malcom Baldridge Criteria for performance excellence, a model for competitiveness based on the principles of total quality management.
It started eight years ago, with 27 institutions becoming recipients and now the JBLCF-Arevalo finally won through the leadership of Dr. Mary Lou Arcelo as board of trustees.

Arcelo, during a press conference yesterday at JBLCF in Molo said that this is a big impact to the said institution. "We we have proven something what we could do and as it was stated in our mission statement we would like to be a leader among schools."

"It shows our leadership. We did and lived by example to other schools. If we can do it, others can do it. The faculty and staff of this institution did their best and showed that they are worthy of this distinction. They are also leading by example through their work, teaching and performance." Arcelo said.

"You know when you do a good job, the students and the community benefit from it. It is a cycle of benefits for everybody it is the community's benefits and if the community is rich, the Filipino and the country get up from poverty," she added.

She also expressed confidence that in the years to come, the school will sustain its role of being a bastion of maritime education in the country as she further added that providing quality education is not an option for institution but a responsibility to its stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ralph Pador, JBLCF-Arevalo administrator said that the award is going to be more of a challenge than a victory. It is another step in ladder of challenges, which the school has to move up to.

"Our goal is not solely to reap awards and recognition, it is more directed towards producing quality and globally-competitive graduates not only for the school but for the whole country," Pador said.

In support to develop our city government workforce, ILOILO CITY plans to send its employees for further development ..

Treñas mulls educational
advancement for employees

ILOILO City -- Mayor Jerry Treñas has disclosed plans to enroll city government employees in the public management courses offered by the Ateneo School of Government (ASG).

Treñas issued the disclosure after Dr. Dennis Gonzalez, an ASG faculty member, provided the mayor and city department heads with an overview of the school and the courses it offers during the regular staff meeting at the executive office last March 27th. During his presentation, Gonzalez also discussed the advantages of ASG's teaching methods.

Gonzalez said the ASG offers a master in public management program (MPM), which is a 39-unit masteral degree and may take a year-and-a-half to accomplish, as well as short courses in public governance that may take only days to finish.

Gonzalez explained that the MPM program includes Power, Ethics and Accountability; Understanding the Bureaucracy; Applied Economics; Social Change and Development; Leadership in the Public Sector; and Public Policy Development and Analysis as its courses.

Among the advantages in availing of an educational program from the ASG, Gonzalez added, is that faculty members are composed of current and former government officials and a flexible schedule fitted for working professionals, among others.

Meanwhile, Treñas ordered all department heads to list down all interested employees who will avail of the educational program. The mayor said that he will also try to ask various international agencies that may help finance the study of the employees.

The estimated cost for the one-and-a-half year course is P100,000.

The mayor said he is quite keen on giving this opportunity as it will equip employees with the skills and knowledge to provide quality public service.

One of the good news I've read for Iloilo City this year. We're gaining ground in our tax collection system, and this article presents a huge improvement in collection, which signifies a good tax payment and an increasing investments in the city. NSO to start survey of business and industry

ILOILO City - Starting April 3, Statistical Coordination Officers (SCOs) of the National Statistics Office (NSO) - Iloilo Provincial Office will personally deliver the questionnaires for the 2005 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) to 323 establishments in the city and province of Iloilo including Guimaras province.

The ASPBI which is formerly the Annual Survey of Establishments (ASE) is a nationwide undertaking that aims to provide data on the structure and level of economic activity in the country that serve as reliable bases upon which the government and private sectors can formulate policies and evolve economic development plans.

NSO Iloilo Acting Provincial Statistician Nelida Amolar said the 323 sample establishments were drawn out from the more than 8,000 establishments in the Iloilo and Guimaras list of establishments being maintained by the NSO using employment size as the stratification variable. Out of these 323 establishments, 224 are from Iloilo City, 88 from Iloilo province and 11 from Guimaras.

Amolar said the distribution of the questionnaires will be until April 28. Then a month after, starting on May 2, the SCOs will go back to collect and manual edit the accomplished questionnaires for submission to the NSO Central Office for machine processing and final editing.

As part of their preparation for this survey, said Amolar a three - day training was participated in by the Statistical Coordination Officers conducted by the Industry Statistical Division of the NSO Central Office last March 21 - 23. The last survey on establishment in the country was conducted in 2003.

"The ASPBI results are specifically used in the construction of national and regional accounts of the Philippine economy, formulating and monitoring plans/policies in the attainment of national and regional economic goals, determining and comparing regional economic structures and performances and in market research and feasibility studies," said Amolar

The survey will cover establishments engaged in economic activities as defined in the 1994 Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC) such as: Agriculture, Hunting and Forestry; Fishing; Mining and Quarrying; Manufacturing; Electricity, Gas and Water; Construction; Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles, Motorcycles and Personal and Households Goods; Hotels and Restaurants; Transport, Storage and Communications, Financial Intermediation, Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities, Private Education, Health and Social Work; and Other Community, Social and Personal Service Activities.

Among the major items that the establishments are asked to provide information in the survey are economic activity, employment, hours worked, compensation, revenue, subsidies received, costs, capital expenditure, fixed assets and inventories.

Except for employment whose reference period is as of November 15, 2005, all information collected refer to calendar year 2005.

Amolar said the preliminary and final results of the 2005 ASPBI are expected to be available on the first and last quarter of 2007. The publication will be in electronic and hard copies.

Back sa topic about Iloilo, damo naman gali call centers sa aton. Not a bad thing though. Hopefully, we can support resources man in return to make them stay here in Iloilo. A move by Smart will definitely boost the market of ePLDT Ventus. Cheers.

Anyway, I don't know much about call center operation, Kirbs. As long as damo kita sina, okay na. As long as there's a good and decent jobs for our kasimanwas, ayos na ina. I hope the'll prosper and their plans to expand will be materialised soon. It's a good boost for our economy gid.

The Iloilo Customs House remains iconic to this day. Definitely one of Iloilo's symbol to date. Muelle Loney is just a meter away and I hope the area will see a splurge of economic activity compliments of the Iloilo Night Market project. I've known from Wecky last year that the Muelle Loney road towards the Customs House is under reconstruction. Any idea?
I like the Customs House architecture, too. It defines an era where it belongs. It's one of the old buildings that your eyes will surely catch of when travelling between Iloilo-Buenavista. You will surely not miss it.

I agree, Metro, I think JD is really good in choosing its location. Puro prime location siya with sure consumers just around the corner.

I'm an Ilonggo too... I sure am here to contribute. What were my suggestions for anyway if not to contribute... Only reason why I was happy that the Governor's Convention Center proposal didn't go thru was because I preferred they put it up at the CBD and not at an already congested area. I did a study on that and the best place is at the Pison's property. Just wondering why they put the capacity at 3,000 seats. That's what I proposed in my study and I have a suspicion that they've read my study since I've left a copy with one of the prominent businessmen in Iloilo.

Was just reminding you to stay on track because you can be misconstrued being arrogant for announcing that you, and so, and so forth, are in this and that place abroad... I do remember my CPU classmates were very proud to say that Ilonggos were humble... not like the people across the Strait. So please keep it that way.

Oh my .. thank you. :) I'll be very much of a straight forward person if I wanted to. I've been here in UK for five years and I would say that I loved the Brits frankness. Don't know much with Americans though most of my cousins are in NYC now.

In metro area, Pavia and Oton I guess would be a very good candidate for a city. But I like them to remain suburbs until buildings and commercialism eats up their market. I don't like seeing a city with no apparent building on sight.

REad carefully will you. My classmates - plural - at CPUDHS would proudly say that Ilonggos are a humble people... not like us Bacolenos. Bragging about other places could be misconstrued as arrogance especially since the topic her was "Iloilo City and Province" and not "Ilonggos and their Lives". Got that? The suburbs in most major metropolitan areas in the USA are just small cities with no high rises to speak of - some don't even have a medium rise building. What you are saying here is true of the mentality of most Filipinos... especially Tagalogs from Manila who think that a place can only be a city if it is very big. They even look thumb there noses at other cities of the country. They think that all people from outside Manila are poor peasants and hillbillies. When they visit Bacolod and Iloilo, for instance, they get the surprise of their lives because the people in both cities are often more dignified and sophisticated than they are.

Ka high-tech guid to ya no, I can just imagine the huge difference between wards in 1st world countries kag sa Pinas.

I still have to verify kung ang new commercial building I mentioned sa previous thread to be erected in Smallville is also the new building to be occcupied sang ClientLogic ... hunch ko lang :)

Dingle Church is one of my favorites sa province. The others are: La Paz Church, Molo Church, Miag-ao, Guimbal, and Duenas hehe ... Promising tani ang original church sang Oton, hope they rebuild the old one eventually in the future.
IV Call Center is inside the 21st Century Hotel (5-6 storey) in Quezon St. fronting Payless Plaza. As for Echo i have no idea, same with the Medical Transcription Center regarding their locations.

ASo client logic is constructing a building in diversion area?

Actually they already started renovating rooms in 2004. I was able to see their renovated Presidential Suite in December 2004...maganda and there are pictures(im not sure if it was authentic or reproduction) of the old iloilo city in the walls of the suite.

The Piña cloth store that you went to is in Arevalo, Villa. Ur right, its past La Fiesta and Hotel Del Rio which are both in Molo District, that store is in the district of Villa.

Transport group presents proposals to ease traffic problem
By Maricar M. Calubiran

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/29/traffic.jpg

Iloilo City -- If President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has her 10-point agenda for the betterment of the country, the Iloilo City Alliance of Drivers Association (Icada) also has its own 10-point agenda to ease the city's traffic problem.

The ultimate purpose of the group however is for the city to allocate funds for the purchase of traffic signs and devices.

The Icada-Rey Cachuela wing yesterday (Tuesday) presented their 10-point agenda to Mayor Jerry Treñas. The 10-point proposal was based on the group's board resolution.

The group's 10-point agenda is a combination of their complaint and proposal relative to the city's traffic problem. It was signed by 14 drivers associations under the Icada-Rey Cachuela wing.

Treñas upon receipt of the group's recommendations referred it to the Committee on Appropriations of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Cachuela, in an interview, admitted the 10-point agenda boils down to money matters. He said the government failed to allocate portions of their budget for the procurement and installation of traffic signs in the different parts of the city. He did not cite any specific amount.

In the same interview, Cachuela could not categorically say who they are referring to as "transport committee." He could not elaborate who are the members of the transport committee, whether they are referring to the members of the committee on transportation of the Sangguniang Panlungsod or the Task Force Traffic of which he is also part. The committee on transportation is chaired by Councilor Jose Espinosa III.

He denied somebody is behind the so-called Icada's 10-point agenda. The proposal was signed by Cachuela and 14 other presidents of their member associations.

The other signatories are Nick Dalisay, Lapaz; Joriz Lorde, Lapuz; Benjie Clavel, Bo. Obrero; Alex Martines, Jaro Liko; Francis Pueda, Ungka; Romeo Tolentino, SOJODA; Jun Lacanaria, Leganes; Henry Pateres, Jaro-Mandurriao; Raymund Juntado, Balabago; Edwin Famorcan, VILLDRAS; Joel Daquel, MATIDA; Romulo Antoniano, MOCHIDA; Jonathan Amihan, UNGKA DIV and Joveto Salvilla of San Miguel.

In their written proposal, the group said the traffic situation in the city needs a "comprehensive study and solution" and that the Regulation Ordinance No. 268-2004 regulating the entry of provincial public utility vehicles is not fully implemented.

The group said there is rampant trans-loading of provincial PUJ's passengers from different terminals to Iloilo City. At the same time, they are asking for a review of Ordinance 268 relative to the issuance of car passes.

The group also said the number of motor vehicles is "increasing continuously while the roads can not cope with the said increases." They added that the local government, traffic enforcers, public utility drivers, commuters and pedestrians are blaming each other for the inconvenience the ordinance regulating private and public utility vehicles (parking, loading and unloading in both private and public utility vehicles.)

Icada also lamented that the "transport committee" is not provided with budget. It was not clear however who they are referring to as the "transport committee."

The sixth proposal of the group is the unreasonable fines and penalties regarding traffic. The fines and penalties resulted to the inconsistencies in the implementation of traffic rules and regulations, the group said.

The Icada also said the local government must be serious in regulating the operation of trisikad (pedicab) in the city. They also recommended that the Land transportation Office (LTO) must only operate outside Iloilo City. LTO is a national agency and there is no law which bans them from operating.

Though the driver's organization contested LTO's operation in the city, they also acknowledged its role, "considering that they are the agency authorized to apprehend traffic violators."

The group also lamented that they are not being consulted every time changes in the loading, unloading and rerouting are implemented.

The Icada also wants the city government to first complete the traffic sign and other advisory prior to the imposition of Ordinance 78 or the ordinance on the loading and unloading of public utility vehicles.

What an advert, Lew. I can still along with them, I'm sure.

There's a LEDI SUPERMART in Star Plaza Mall, Jaro. I think amo ni ang dako nga competitor sang SM Jaro.
Pag nagadali ko before, I do my groceries in Ledi-Star Plaza, Jaro. At least one ride lang sa balay namon. Mas cheaper pa, besides same products man gihapon. :)

Don't you start migs. Mahuya na karon si Caloy sa akon ... hihihi.

Anyway, it's nice to know that Driver's Association back home takes an initiative to help our local government in solving traffic problem. It can't be denied that Iloilo's traffic is right next to Manila. We had several schemes before and even hiring the MMDA's topman to help solve the problem yet the traffic remains deliberatly high in the city streets. Would it be possible if they'll regulate the entry of private cars within the city proper area on specific times?

I like this idea, Kirby. Dapat ang mga postcards nga ginabaligya naton sa Iloilo will feature Iloilo City or Iloilo Province itself. We have places of interest around the province nga pwede gid naton ibutang sa card nga ina.

One of the good news I've read for Iloilo City this year. We're gaining ground in our tax collection system, and this article presents a huge improvement in collection, which signifies a good tax payment and an increasing investments in the city. I hope we'll reach our 3.4 billion target for this year. Not bad for a 70-sq km city at all. :)
Nice to note our improvement in this aspect of development. Hope we'll continue helping our government by paying our taxes properly. :) . Btw, Kirby it's a big leap gid compare sa last year target naton. Hope we can double the figure by the end of next year or two.

Expansion of any business around the city is definitely good news for everyone. Again, more jobs for our kasimanwas. Employment rate will be increased and family income will improve. I support any expansion these call centers are having in our city. :)

and

JBLCF-Arevalo awarded for best quality management
two of the best news of the week. Kudos to John B Lacson Colleges Foundation of Arevalo's administrative staffs, etc for the job well done. I hope they'll continue to pursue excellence in education and school's management. And wishing they'll get their university's status soon.

A decent improvement in our city's tax collection shows the city is growing economically. Good number of businesses came to invest few years back, and recently there's a good influx of newer investments going on, too. I hope the city and its residents could maintain the momentum of our growing economy in the province and the entire Western Visayas Region.

Panay Island power supply seen steady after Mirant deal

PANAY Island may soon be assured of continuous supply of electricity after the Energy Regulatory Commission approved the amendments in the power purchase agreement between the Panay Electric Com. (PECO) and the Mirant-owned Panay Power Corp. (PPC).

In its 26-page decision Wednesday the commission approved the amended PPA between PECO and PPC that allows the former to source most of its power outside of the National Power Corp. since Napocor could commit itself only to a “nonfirm” agreement or when supply is available.

Under the amended PPA, the PPC will supply PECO with 72-megawatts of annual power for 25 years. PECO’s power demand peaked at 78 MW in October last year.

The deal also stipulates minimum energy quantity of 373 million kilowatt hours per year.

The rest of PECO’s demand may be sourced from PPC’s affiliate Avon Rivers, the cost of which will be paid by PECO and recovered through automatic generation rate adjustment.

The commission also said that the 3-percent prompt payment discount (PPD) previously granted by the PPC to PECO shall be removed in view of the lower-base rates approved under the amended contract.

Fuel cost for the startup diesel and bunker fuel will be pass-on cost of PPC to PECO, provided that the consumption rate of bunker fuel does not exceed 0.2600 liters per kWh or actual fuel consumption, whichever is lower. The consumption rate is based on the current 65-percent load factor of PECO.

Both PPC and PECO are directed by the ERC to connect to Napocor’s Cebu-Negros-Panay grid. Both may enter into contract with Napocor for electricity supply in excess of PECO’s contractual commitment to the Mirant-owned generation firm, but only when excess supply from Napocor is available.

The contract with Napocor for the appropriate ancillary will be passed on to PECO’s customers.

Such order was given by the regulator to avoid blackouts in PECO’s franchise areas whenever electricity supply runs low.

Last year the PPC threatened to shut down its facility in Iloilo due to PECO’s multimillion debts, raising the possibility of massive blackouts in its franchise, which includes Iloilo City. PECO could not pay its debts to the PPC since the ERC initially did not allow PECO to increase rates by P6.5121 per kWh. The ERC revised its decision and allowed cash flow alleviation for PECO. PECO and PPC originally signed a power purchase agreement in 1997.

Thanks for the info Lex. The last time I've seen him was CPU's Centennial last year. And we even dropped him off in Mandurriao Airport kay dira sila naga-opisina subong. I was just informed though that they'll move soon in Sta Barbara once the Iloilo International Airport's Admin Building will be finished. There's a good improvement with the status of the project recently that the plan time of completion remains October this year. The Japanese contractors are doubling their time to speed up the process. Wala pa ako balita about the tentative test flight whether it's last quarter of 2006 or early 2007. I hope they'll make it this year for the best. The longer they drag the new airport's opening, the longer will see more investors coming in.

I can sense it as well @marsleg. :) I bet there's a sudden shift of topic here where everyone talks about retailers and wholesalers in Iloilo. They've quite enlisted almost all big supermarkets around the city that even myself have no inkling they're all exisiting. It's high time for them to move themselves.
agree gid. As our commercial and trading sectors are doing well at present, I hope we'll not going to overlook the industrial side, too. Pavia should at least be aggressive in luring investors to their place being the Regional Agro-Industrial Center of Western Visayas. And like Pavia, PASSI CITY as the seat of Provincial Agro-Industrial Center will do likewise as well. There's a lot of potentials for development to these places. Leganes, too, has a Light Industrial Growth Park and so with Barotac Nuevo. They're still untapped in nature. Their local governments should definitely make a move NOW!

Amo gid Chy. The webmasters' kinda busy siguro. It's so frustrating to look at the official website devoid of proper information and outdated. No one will take any interest of reading stuffs in there, two or three years ago pa.
Let's see if we can email the webmaster again.

I agree. Employment is the vital point above anything else.
More than anything else, it's employment that counts.

are you referring to Plaza Libertad, Chy? It still looks good and green. I do like to stroll there once in a while when I'm in Iloilo.
Plaza Libertad remains green and trimmed. I hope they'll keep it that way.

Thank you so much. These buildings are still existing .. standing proud an tall.
they are Iloilo's testament.

good idea, Metro. Jed is a no.1 councilor of the city right now. He ought to listen to people's cry :) .
I agree. And he's a businessman, too.

Also, the hospital net is directly connected to several libraries across the nation including universities where the NHS is affiliated.
that's right. And it's all for staff's use. :) All of them is directly hooked to the net with a lot of links to national websites and medical-nursing sites and web libraries. there's a section, too, in the intraneht here lab results, etc could be accessed in the computer.

All of them are promising indeed. Business people are starting to keep on eye with Iloilo City's development. Proofs are numbers of call centers in Iloilo right now plus all other businesses starting to relocate their offices in our city and province. I guess we've never sleeps too bad. Progress can't be denied at all everywhere in Iloilo.
we'll just wait and see. A little more or less than a year to go. :)

I wish they'll reach a thousand seats by the end of this year. I've heard from a friend that there's a continue hiring of staffs for ePLDT Ventus right now. And I hope that with Clientlogic erecting its call center in the city in few months time, more competition amongst the call centers will be felt. Good employment naman for our kasimanwas.[/QUOTE]

Leganes’
Sa-ad Festival

LEGANES, the only coastal town sharing a common border with Iloilo City, is set to hold its Sa-ad Festival on April 4. Having a thriving cultural life, the municipality is a blending of multi-cultural influences with strong religious tradition.

Known for the thousands of pilgrims all over the country that visit its San Vicente Ferrer Parish every April during its feast day, Leganesons venerate their winged saint for his highly miraculous healing power.

http://www.panaynews.com.ph/images/people%20pic.jpg
CELEBRATING faith thru dance.

The palapak or treading the statue to one’s head is believed to cure ailments. It is often coupled with a pana-ad or a spiritual promise of sacrificing something important in exchange for a favor.

This event is instrumental in fostering a new sense of unity among the people of Leganes.

Under the leadership of Mayor Adolfo Jaen (the youngest elected mayor in the Visayas Region in 1963), this sense of oneness is reflected in the thanksgiving celebration of Sa-ad Festival.

Formerly known as Pana-ad Kay Señor San Vicente Ferrer Festival, the Sa-ad (other term for
Pana-ad) Festival’s theme this year is “Leganes: going strong amidst the challenging times.”

The festival opened on March 28 with a Grand Salvo. It will be followed with a Clean-Up Drive on March 31.
The Bicycle Fun Ride with the Grand Civic Parade and APEX Concert will be staged on April 1.

Martial Arts Competition, the 1st Sa-ad Motorcross and the Miss LYP and Sa-ad Festival Queen Pageant Night, is sure to entertain everyone on April 2.

The Street Dancing Competition of Sa-ad Festival is set to excite visitors and guests on April 4, 2006, with the Town Fiesta on April 5.

A small settlement where “guiham” or wild boars once roamed -- now known as Brgy. Guiham – Leganes was originally populated by migrants from nearby towns. About 150 years ago, people in nearby communities like Jaro and Sta. Barbara began migrating to the area. This led to the prosperity of commerce and trade.

The arrival of Spaniards gradually gave the “small settlement,” then a pueblo, the name Valencia (a town in Spain whose patron is Saint Vicente Ferrer), in compliance with the decree by the Spanish Governor of Iloilo in 1856.

However, a protest was sent through a petition to the Alta Mar in Spain invoking to change the pueblo’s name because of its unwarranted honor to one of its co-founder, Don Miguel Valencia.

The name was thus changed to Leganes, a town in Spain that was of little significance.

Leganes used to be an arrabal of Jaro in 1916 and was later granted autonomy and became a full-fledged town in 1940 by virtue of Executive Order No. 241 signed by then Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon.

The town has a dramatic landscape of well-cultivated fields, with coconut trees and bamboo clumps dominating the scenery. Most of the interior is covered by prime agricultural lands (63.51 percent of the municipality’s land area is devoted to crop production with rice as its only major crop). The municipality’s coastline, however, are dotted with fishponds and saltbeds.

Leganes is the third smallest municipality in Iloilo with an area of 3,216 hectares, divided into 18 barangays, with six barangays as classified as urban.

Urbanization has progressed rapidly in recent decades. Its geographic location (11 kilometers away from the city) exposes the diverse influences of nearby Iloilo City, contributing to its historical and cultural evolution. Its proximity to the city makes it an ideal area to accommodate the residential, commercial or industrial spillover of the city.

Concern for the environment has grown since the town’s emergence as an industrial growth center in this part of the province. Leganes’ system of protected areas were identified under the Strategic Agricultural and Fishery Development Zone (SAFDZ). The municipal government has actively encouraged the participation of private landowners in the protected area system, which represents an important source of income for the municipality.

Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion in Leganes. Around 97 percent of the population officially identifies with this faith. About two percent of the population is Baptist, the second most popular religion. A small minority, about a percent of the population, is Iglesia.

Leganes has moved to an economy in which diversified; manufacturing plays a much more significant role. Along the national road going to the Poblacion, the side streets serve as show windows of well-crafted bamboo and rattan furniture. Export-oriented cottage industries producing lampshades out of hand-made papers, fossilized leaves and steel are priced items from the locality.

A taste of home

By Amando Doronila
Inquirer News Service

WHENEVER I visit a new place, whether here or overseas, the first thing I want to see is the wet market. The market tells you more about how ordinary people live and their culinary tastes than all the glossy tourist brochures churned out by government agencies.

Wet markets in the Philippines have never lost their fascination to me. On a recent weekend, I went early morning after a walk to a barangay in La Paz, Iloilo City. It was Sunday, the day when the barangay multi-purpose hall is converted into a market. On other days, it serves as a basketball court, a chapel where Mass is held and a meeting place-thanks to congressmen's pork barrel which built the hall.

The seafood was fresh. They had come from the Iloilo City Fish Port, where retailers buy their supply for distribution in the public markets. Like the seafood, vegetables and fruits were similarly fresh, but one should not look for gourmet vegetables in this local setting.

We bought sea shells, tamban (sardines), Chinese crabs, known as intsik-intsik among the local inhabitants, and small fish smaller than one's smallest finger known in Ilonggo as bontitin. They have the shape of a miniature apahap, which belongs to the sea bass family. If Iloilo (or Panay Island) abounds with good seafood restaurants, the secret lies in the fact that the seas around Panay are fishing grounds, and there is a continuing supply of fresh fish, which determines the taste of seafood.

In Iloilo, my home province, we eat more fish than fowl or meat, and this is due to the abundance of the fruit of the sea. Our cooking is simple and the main method is either sinigang or inihaw (soured as a stew or grilled), with very little embellishment and no sauces at all that others use to cover up the lack of freshness of the food.

The Chinese crabs were not the ocean crab. When raw, they have a purple color on the shell. They are a cross between kalampay, the small crabs that crawl on the dikes of fishponds, and the ocean crab. When young, Chinese crabs are served in restaurants as appetizers called crispy crablets. We cooked the crabs in the traditional way-putting them in a clay pot and steaming them for at least half an hour, until the shell turns red. The small fish were cooked paksiw style. Put them in a cup of vinegar with a few cloves of garlic and just a dash of cooking oil (for flavor) and boil them for about 15 minutes.

Grilled tamban was the piece de resistance. Tamban is not well appreciated. When we talk about grilled fish in Manila, we think of blue marlin, tangigue steak, gindara and tuna jaws. But if tamban is fresh (it does not keep well in refrigeration, unlike the fish mentioned above), it is the sweetest and most juicy fish when grilled.

In the kitchen of my sister's home in La Paz, the maid simply cooked the sardines on an aluminum frying pan. Since it takes time to fire charcoal, the maid sprinkled rock salt on the pan to keep the fish from sticking and put the pan on top of the fire. Cooking time is a few minutes (until the scales, which should not be removed, turn brown). The result was a very juicy grilled fish, with no additives, no herbs, no artificial flavoring. Grilling extracts the juice out of the fish. Sometimes, the fish is dipped in vinegar with crushed garlic, but I prefer fish left alone to show its culinary virtues.

The shrimps were simply blanched in a clay pot for 15 minutes, with salt added.

Eaten with newly harvested upland rice, the viands cannot look for a more harmonious combination.

The evening before, we had dinner at the well-known seafood restaurant in Villa Beach, Arevalo, known as Breakthrough. Everyone in Iloilo and every visitor know this restaurant, as well as its competition nearby, Tatoy's. Our hosts were the officials of the graduate school of Central Philippine University where I gave a lecture at a seminar. Breakthrough sits on the edge of the sea. Its several pavilions are always full, but the menu is pretty straightforward and uncomplicated. When you have a fresh source of seafood, you don't overwhelm their flavor with additives disguised as ornamental sauces. Ilonggo seafood cooking shuns things like lemon butter sauce wiped on grilled fish.

At Breakthrough, we had about seven or eight dishes, of which I shall describe only a few. For sinigang, we had sea shells cooked with fish head (red snapper), small string beans and small camote shoots. In Ilonggo cooking, we hardly use sinigang mix. We use batuan, a small sour fruit, which gives sourness to the soup and removes the fishiness of fish, although fresh fish hardly has a stale smell. Then, we had kinilaw (raw fish marinated in vinegar, small red pepper and coconut milk), grilled squid stuffed with onions, ocean crabs, grilled fillet of red snapper (whose head was used in the sinigang), grilled scallops on the shell garnished with finely chopped garlicmy favorite, and, of course, chicken inasal (charcoal roasted chicken).

Inasal is obligatory in Ilonggo (both in Iloilo and Negros Occidental) restaurants. They roast native chicken usually, or partly, free range. Native chicken has a gamy taste, and their flesh is chewy. Ilonggos like their roasted chicken this way and if you serve supermarket poultry-bred chicken, their palates are offended.

As you can see, the underlying flavor and style of cooking lean toward simplicity and allowing seafood to exhibit their own juices and delicacy. There is no place for fusion or nouvelle cuisine (which underplays the sauces for which traditional French cuisine is famous.) Ilonggo cooking is proletarian and comes out best when the mode of cooking is simple, uncluttered and quick.

Expansion of any business around the city is definitely good news for everyone. Again, more jobs for our kasimanwas. Employment rate will be increased and family income will improve. I support any expansion these call centers are having in our city. :)

I believe it is about time that some of the development and new businesses should go to Passi City... Moving some of the businesses and institutions would surely decongest Iloilo City.

In preparation for the Iloilo Night Market Opening :

Re-routing for big trucks, vans to take place due to night market
By Kathy Villalon Cinco

IN ANTICIPATION of a possible traffic congestion along Muelle Loney upon the implementation of the night market on Friday, the City Government and the Traffic Management and Enforcement Unit (TMEU) has a re-routing plan in place.

The TMEU realized that the most affected motorists would be the container vans coming from Fort San Pedro towards the International Port in Lapuz.

According to SPO2 Bernardino Quinto of TMEU, their new route from Fort San Pedro will include going through these streets --- Rizal, Ledesma, Infante, Diversion Road, Jalandoni and Commission Civil before going to Lapuz.

Container vans coming from other districts towards the International Port will pass through the same route starting from Commission Civil.

Areas like General Luna, Bonifacio Drive and City Proper among others will continue to totally ban trucks and container vans.

However, areas that partially ban trucks will allow them to pass through except from the following times: 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Also expected to be affected by the night market is the efficiency of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BOF), located in Aduana, which uses Muelle Loney as its main route in answering fire calls.

Melchor Tan, city administrator, said that the BOF, after coordinating with them, agreed to put a fire truck at the back of the Provincial Capitol so it could answer to emergencies.

Yesterday, Tan, the TMEU and the City Engineer's Office conducted an ocular inspection of the Promenade Area so they could anticipate any problem that may occur.

Meanwhile, some 80 vendors will hold their stalls during the night market, which will take place every 6 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Tan said that this number includes the 50 existing vendors in the City Proper who will also transfer to Muelle Loney.

Tan added that they have asked three soft drink companies to provide the kiosks.
Each kiosk is two meters wide and a vendor is allowed to have three slots, as provided by the night market ordinance.

He said that the Iloilo City Mobile Group and the Police Precinct 1 will provide security in the area.

Ka high-tech guid to ya no, I can just imagine the huge difference between wards in 1st world countries kag sa Pinas.
I don't think it's too high-tech diri sa UK-NHS. It's just that Brits value their staffs more than we do back home. They'll concern more on developments and professional advancement. Most nurses here, even on low grade are sent to universities for further studies in their fields of specialities funded by NHS with study days considered as your off duty na. It's different though nursing in Uk is more hands-on compare sa Philippines. Besides, they have equipments available to support patients' wellness and all is given FREE from the government.

I still have to verify kung ang new commercial building I mentioned sa previous thread to be erected in Smallville is also the new building to be occcupied sang ClientLogic ... hunch ko lang :)
That's a good start Chy, just in case. I would like to see Diversion area blooms in the next two years. It's not that far, I guess.

Beautiful shot ... nahisa ko, hehe
Dingle Church is one of my favorites sa province. The others are: La Paz Church, Molo Church, Miag-ao, Guimbal, and Duenas hehe ... Promising tani ang original church sang Oton, hope they rebuild the old one eventually in the future.
Wish to visit all these churches someday. Old and absolute brilliant architecture of the past.

ahh ok ... sa Century21 gali ... ari o may nakita ko nga pic sa internet

OO nami na subong ang JD sa San Ag, I've been wanting to eat there ... Their rennovation is really effective, every time I pass by Gen. Luna pirmi siya gutok.
Good thing. I'm glad they renovated it. Chy, isn't that there's a new building/s (under construction) near University of San Agustin?

Pavia is growing. It can't be denied. Mostly industrial ang gina-cater nila. Commercialism in Pavia is still groping. Though there are few commercial plans known by this time, I wish it'll pick up by the time the airport in Mandurriao moves to Sta.Barbara-Cabatuan area. Pavia could be another Iloilo City in the making. Small land area yet big in economy and business. But of course, let's not forget Oton, too. It's a little white elephant in its own right.

Let's see if we can email the webmaster again.
Please do. It'll be a big help gid.

More than anything else, it's employment that counts.
of course it is. Iloilo every year produces thousand of graduates from its six universities and several tertiaries institutions. We need to help find jobs for our fellow Ilonggos. Hopefully, our provincial economy will be sustainable and/or improving.

Plaza Libertad remains green and trimmed. I hope they'll keep it that way.
looks the area is well-kept. That's good. I liked it that way. Shades for everyone in a day. Tani may mga cafe bars man lapit dira no? Btw, there's a pizza parlour near Plaza Libertad. It's just a walking distance. Nalipat lang ako sang ngalan. That pizza place seemed to be occupying the old mansion within that area.

they are Iloilo's testament.
Undeniably YES.That and everyhting there is .. can't be denied. Kung sa Brits-NHS pa, evidence-based.

I agree. And he's a businessman, too.
Really? No idea what's business he owned in Iloilo. Above anything else, he's a mover and that really matters.

that's right. And it's all for staff's use. :) All of them is directly hooked to the net with a lot of links to national websites and medical-nursing sites and web libraries. there's a section, too, in the intraneht here lab results, etc could be accessed in the computer.
that's right. It's there for a reason (log in sa forum), just joking.

we'll just wait and see. A little more or less than a year to go. :)
it's dragging .. he he he. A year na lang gid. I'm sure by mid-next year, masako na gid ang probinsiya. There's a good shift of economy. Mind you, the province will be earning more sa airport nga ini. Ang city naman will earn twice or fourfolds considering with the success of the bidding proper.

That's a challenge for ePLDT Ventus. I hope they'll continue expnading their capacity. I'm sure, human resource is not a problem at all in our city.

Check out Iloilo City’s night market
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – Check out the food festival and goodies displayed at the Muelle Loney promenade along Quirino-Lopez Bridge and Yulo Street during the grand opening of the city’s Night Market at six o’clock this evening.

The areas of Muelle Loney, JM Basa, Aldeguer, Guanco, J de Leon, Iznart, Quezon, Arsenal and Yulo Streets are designated as sites for the night market and shall be closed to vehicular traffic on weekends from 6 in the evening to 12 midnight.

Around 160 vendors have been registered as owners of kiosks in the night market.

People are also expected to flock the area as guests and artists arrive to grace the event with Starstruck winner Gian Carlos, Jopay and Rochelle of Sexbomb Dancers in the forefront.

Councilor Jed Mabilog, who proposed for the revival of the Night Market Ordinance, encouraged everyone to experience tonight’s affair and enjoy the good company, clean place and cheap food.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said he would try to set up events at the night market vicinity to create awareness and support from the people as well as to introduce the good ambiance of the place.

^^ Just roaming around for an hour lang siguro. On and off the net ah. Been off foe couple of days and whoaah .. lovely pictures were posted by Chymera and of course a great, great contributions from Metropolitan. I'm glad for all Ilonggos enthusiasm here in our thread. I hope Metro's friends will come and join with us soon.
Ok then. Nice to see some new pictures and new buildings around the city. We're moving really well. Slowly but surely. Remember that in few pages, city's tax collection exceeded 38+% from its target collection in the month of January and February? It's a good indication already. Truly, Iloilo's business climate is up and booming. Thanks to all the investors and businessmen around. And of course to our good city government officials. Paspas gid ! :)

I believe it is about time that some of the development and new businesses should go to Passi City... Moving some of the businesses and institutions would surely decongest Iloilo City.
It will be a good move, I guess. But Passi City's thrust revolve mostly in agricultural sector, sugar industry to be exact.

me, too. Hope to hear more news about it in the next few days. It's a desirable move for Iloilo City to liven up the Muelle Loney area. It's a good place indeed. I'm sure with summer approaching, more restos and ice cream haus will be built within the area. And don't forget the halo-halo or leche con jelo stands, too. It's a whirlwind of economic activities in the old downtown streets, just in case. :)

By Kathy Villalon Cinco

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), in its decision dated March 10, approved the amendments in the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between Panay Power Corporation (PPC) and Panay Electric Company (Peco).

This was revealed by Peco's legal counsel lawyer Hans Sayno and by a copy secured by Sun.Star from the ERC's website (www.erc.gov.ph).

The ERC stated that the approval of the amendment agreement is necessary to ensure sufficient, reliable and secure power supply to the people of Iloilo City.

Yes, I admire this man (he hails from Dumangas by the way)... I like his opinions and analysis in the daily inquirer...aside from the fact that he is a True Blue Ilonggo!

Matood gid man na kay bisan ang mga isda/shells/uga came from ILOILO! Same with the oyster bars here...ILOILO pa na halin. kumbaga kung preska manamit bisan wala na burloloy! Kung seafoods lang man... manggaranon gid ang ILOILO... hidlaw na ko Bay-ad kag Talaba. Mahal di sa manila ang talaba... ang ila eat-all-u-can P300- P400... kung sa "lilo" na isa na na ka sako!

Grand! I hope the ILOILO Yacht will be realised soon. Though I haven't heard much about it. The only thing I knew is the expansion of LOBOC INTERNATIONAL PORT towards Dumangas area. Hence, a Coastal Road was built to spur economic and business transfer from city of Iloilo to the towns of Leganes, Zarraga, Barotac Nuevo and Dumangas.

New Museum within Port San Pedro and Rotary area is an absolute welcome addition to the growing heritage bid of the city of Iloilo.

The night market aims to spur the economic growth the city so that it could strengthen its hold as a center of business and tourism.

Treñas said additional lights were already installed in the area.

One side of the Muelle Loney stretch will be provided for vendors selling general merchandise while the other half is for vendors selling foodstuff.

The City Engineers shall be responsible for putting divisions in the areas to be provided for interested vendors while the City Treasurer’s Office shall take charge of the taxes.

Earlier, some vendors opposed the implementation of the night market in the metropolis.

A grantee’s (kiosk owner) permit shall be revoked by the Sangguniang Panlungsod if it is caught violating certain grounds contrary to the City Ordinance authorizing the night market.

I don't know much about Philippine's entertainment world pero okay na. lol. These celebrities will surely make an impact especially this area is new and they already have several competitors around the city like Diversion-Smallville and La Villa Rica de Arevalo-Calupmang Seaside Restos. It's a battle who get the city's people attention. With regards naman sa aesthetic issues, I suggest that they'll make it like a mini-park or so. More greeneries along the area and more lights (I guess more lights was already addressed by the Mayor). I want to see and feel it like Europe when I'll set my foot there one day. :) And you're right to say ... it'll still be a long way to go for Muelle Loney, but who knows? :)

Without Batting An Eyelash : Beauty and bravura in Iloilo

Mar 31, 2006
By Maurice Arcache
Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE annual Miss Dinagyang of Iloilo contest is something that moi always looks forward to, palanggas. So faster than you could bat an eyelash, there I was in Iloilo City as the head of the panel of judges for the Miss Dinagyang 2006 pageant.

Pretty, intelligent and popular Cherry May Barbo, a BS Tourism student and the reigning Miss Central Philippines University, was the hands-down winner from the very start. Taking the thumbs-up of the judges, the stunning looker also bagged the Best in Interview, Best in Dinagyang Terno, and Best in Festival Costume, plus the Darling of the Press Award from the Iloilo Press Corps, which was presented by president Lydia Pendon and past president David Sinay of Panay News, no less.

A close second was statuesque Jane Baruis, while the third placer was eye-catching Girlie Ocos.

Among the eight gorgeous finalists were Christy Camohoy, Rhegine Zamora (Miss Talent); Mary Grace Rafil; Cheche Salcepuedes and Charis Bernas.

Miss Dinagyang was definitely one of the best yet, a showcase of elegant fashion, top entertainment, and a spectacle of sights and sounds.

The best part moi loved was the fabulous festival costumes done by the candidates’ favorite designers. It was a fantastic showcase of talent and imagination that drew loud applause, whistles and howls from the excited audience at Cinema 6 of SM Iloilo.

Candidates wore fire-engine red cocktail dresses by Krizia of SM Department Store; colorful two-piece swimsuits by River Hive; and hablon and chiffon ternos by fashion designer Randy Jimenez.

Hablon is a world-class material used by local and international designers, palanggas. It is the source of local pride of the people of Miag-ao, Iloilo, who are known for their craftsmanship.

Good-looking singer-actor Keempee de Leon serenaded the swooning candidates, while handsome actor-model Brad Turvey did a great job hosting the pageant, with national debating champ Sedfrey Cabaluna as the co-host.

The well-picked panel of judges included fashion designer Nono Palmos; smart Arlene Sison of Smart Telecommunications; fun Cromwell Enriquez of Bayview Park Hotel in Manille; adorable Ana Mendoza of Cebu Pacific; Rodolfo Cueva of Negros Navigation Co. Inc.; Boy Palermo of SM Cinema; Beth Oranga of Natasha; and Texas-based Tom Swett.

Making sure the pageant would go smoothly, which it did, were dedicated executive producer and fashion plate Tres Solis; program director Edwin Duero; and Panay News’ John B. Castigador, who handled the promotions, dahlings.

A little birdie told me that a candidate had a good chance of making it to the finals, but some of the judges and the production staff were appalled by her insolence, arrogance and attitude problem. Oops!

Once the curtains fell, it was time to chill out for the candidates, cast and crew, who were treated to a fun party by Tres Solis at Nena’s River Hive Restaurant, where everyone had a blast, especially candidate Donna Dee Tatayon, who was turning into a young, beautiful woman in time for her 18th birthday, palanggas.

Mau man ah. Tani sa ulihi the nurses here sa Pinas get the same special treatment that nurses abroad receive from their gov't for their hard work and care that they give to patients :) Tingala man ko pirmi lang si wecky sang una ga mention about studies ... what do you mean nga hands-on? Indi pa guid ngadaan dalum guid ang experience ko sa hospital setting

That's a good start Chy, just in case. I would like to see Diversion area blooms in the next two years. It's not that far, I guess.

Unless that an anomaly with the transfer or the opening of the new international airport sprouts up, tani wala lang

Wish to visit all these churches someday. Old and absolute brilliant architecture of the past.

several new hotels opened last year coupled with some old hotels undergoing renovation and expansion. Another proof of our growing hotel market in Iloilo City. Thanks for sharing, Chy. By the way, is Century21 a member of an international Century hotels chain?
I'm not sure but I think the only member of an international hotel chain in Iloilo is Days Hotel... ara man fali ang Four Season_ Hotel, jk ....

Good thing. I'm glad they renovated it. Chy, isn't that there's a new building/s (under construction) near University of San Agustin?
Oo ... one beside the Residence Hotel and one sa front niya. 5 and 3 stories lang man, not that tall. As I've heard, one is going to be a Hotel or Apartment Bldg. (5-story) and the other Medical Offices siguro (3-story)

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid198/p5d9f727d509a1d3fabbc12ea58b7f5ce/f0cfa495.jpg

it's a good one. Mas may appeal siya seeing it in black and white.
hehe ... kabudlay guid bala i-appreciate ang old buildings in the city proper with all the noise, pollution, and power lines. Mau mayu nalang guro nga magsalyo na ang iban nga businesses from the area to the new "hot spots" in the city so that the place will be less congested.
I agree, when the new international airport opens ... Pavia will be the center of it all :)
don't know these new buildings are existing at the back of CPU now. Looks like things are doing well. The city is expanding in its tri-boundaries (Pavia, Leganes and Oton). I thougt only area going to Leganes is doing well and where building construction is booming. But seems like Jaro-Pavia area is catching up, too. Chy, any idea what is that white building in the second pic? daw apartelle-commercial ang dating niya.
Wala guid ko idea, I only passed by the area just this time lang.
Jon, ara ka da gali? Thatnks for bringing up some of the subjects here in this page. Kanami sang mga pictures ni Chymera. Looks like he's enjoying roaming around the city and taking pics.
Enjoy guid man :) Subong lang ko ngadaan naka lagaw2 after pila ka months. I was from Monte Rosa ngadaan taking some pictures because my mother is an agent there and she wanted me to advertise it on my website. So, we thought of using the Pavia route pag puli so we can take pictures there :D

The opening is tonight na gali ... may duty pa kmi bwas sa aga, kanugon, basi di ko makakad2 :)
If our tax collectors do their job religiously, I won't be surprised if they collect double the figures of last year, kadamo guid ngadaan tax evaders sa pinas coupled pa sa increase of VAT. If the BIR suceeds with their collection target of P3.4B, then for sure ang income of the city will also increase which means that our city will have more money to spend for infrastructure and services. Mayu man because there are already many indicators that are back-up the idea that Iloilo is waking-up from its long "sleep".
Maayo gid! May entertainment pa! Good idea in bringing homegrown talent Gian carlos!

May kompetensiya na ang Villa/Calumpang Seafood Strip, Diversion Area Resto/Bars... Hope that it will pattern itself like baywalk... add some spice like weekly if not nightly entertainments and activities and also some nicely incorporated designs like (bilog bala na bato haw, cobblestones etc). Since maga-earn man diri ang Iloiloo City Gov't.

Wishes, wishes, wishes... its along way to go but who knows? We'll be there before we knew it.
I've passed by the area yesterday ... "no comment" lang anay, hulat lang lang ko kung up and running na ang project ;)

Aldeguer Sreet

Aldeguer is a sub-street of Iloilo City that is connected to the two main thoroughfares of the downtown area - J.M. Basa Street and Iznart Street. It is, therefore situated at the heart of the city. Because of its location, it has not been excluded from the "domino effect" in the development of Iloilo as the most urbanized center in the island of Panay. It was named after the Honorable Jose Aldeguer, an Ilonggo delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1934.

The location and the nature of Aldeguer Street from the late 1930s to the present have remained essentially the same up to the present. In 1937, it was just partly asphalted (David, 1937). It was during the 1970s that the road was cemented and has been what it is until now. It contains some of the most significant business establishments in Iloilo City that certainly had contributed in the economic history of the area.

Aldeguer Street was, in the past, and still is today, the site of many of the city's retail stores and other business establishments. Property value on it increased rapidly from the late 19th century through more recent times. During the 1960s, a stall's rental fee was about P 500.00 a month, but now it ranges from about P25,000.00 to P30,000.00, and others might even be higher than these amounts. It just shows the marketability of the place and as a significant destination for bargain-hunters of low-priced goods.

In the 1890s, as a result of the rise of Iloilo City as the shopping center and the cultural capital of Western Visayas, together with the other streets in the city, Aldeguer grew in importance. Merchants started putting up their businesses in Aldeguer that included sugar traders and storekeepers who sold necessities and imported items to the growing Iloilo population and costumers from other parts of the region. Stores were opened for textiles, clothing, furniture, glassware and household items. Shops were also opened to handle iron works, plumbing, carromata and calesa needs, rope works, and also food and drinks. Because of this concentration of merchants, Aldeguer Street became part of the business arena in the city.

As it was in the 19th century, Aldeguer Street had become one of the liveliest places in the commercial district of Iloilo up to the 1980s. This was before the establishment of a number of malls in the city. Most of the earlier structures along the street were stone and wood antillian type of buildings. By the 1920s, reinforced concrete buildings took the lead. But still, some wooden structures with stone floors at street level had remained. In the 1930s, most of the buildings that provided Aldeguer its distinct character were constructed and some of them have survived up to this day. Among these, are: the Cantonese Club built in 1931, Tiampo Building constructed in 1934, P. Dulalia Building put up in 1936, John A Tan Building established in 1958, and the former International Hotel at Corner J.M. Basa - Aldeguer Streets.

Among the famous commercial firms operating in Aldeguer Street in the 1930s were (David, 1937): Hang Wo and Co. that sold boots and shoes, foodstuffs and nourishments, as well as sporting goods; W. Wing Kee and Co., that offered foodstuffs and nourishments; Wong Ahang and Co., that was engaged in the sale of musical instruments; F.M Yaptico and Co, Ltd., an importer of all kinds of goods; and, Nagai, that sold watches, gold and silver wares.

Today, Aldeguer Street still contains important establishments. Low-priced goods can still be bought in the area. The owners of businesses have remained predominantly Ilonggo-Chinese, but there are now Koreans, Filipino Muslims, and Japanese that are participating in the hustle and bustle typical in this well-known commercial artery of the city.

Amu ni siya gali ang guina tawag nga "Jaro Grand Estates" ... ma build sila mall kuno?

It's grand and beautiful. Is this another new subdivision/comunity in Iloilo? Btw, who's the developer of this all-new village? Is this in Jaro district or somewhere outside the city area? And what about this mall? I think Savannah should start moving if all these hearsays are true. There's a battle of "new" communities in the province recently. :)

my, my, my Matteo .. the traffic is absolutely heavy .. and it's almost like that everyday .. all throughout the day .. in almost all streets of the city. I hope they'll create more roads, wider roads to decongest the city area. Diversion Road (in the pic) is almost 10-lane already (or proably more) yet the traffic during rush hours is too much to bear.

probably the picture was taken last December :) . And yes, it's bustling and vibrant ... and TRAFFIC! he he he. I'm just wishing upon a star that there'll be a proper scheme the city can adopt to solve the problem. Hiring an MMDA official in the past, and some codings never been a success at all. :)

JBLCF: Bringing history back to life
By Janice V. Busil
Photos by A.Chris Fernandez

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf7.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf10.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf11.jpg

Our past defines our future. History tells us the way of life of our ancestors. It links us to the era of evolution and revolution. By scanning through the pages of our existence, we've discovered thousands of things that liberated our curiosity. We begin asking ourselves question that never seemed to end. Fortunately, archaeologists exist. It was because of them that we were able to uncover the secrets of the past. Luckily, Ilonggos don't need to spend 24-hours-a-day and seven-days-a-week of our busy life excavating pieces of the ancient times to reveal history.

Behind the huge edifice of the John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (JBLCF), formerly known as Iloilo Maritime Academy, lies a modern-day time capsule. The Library of Cultural Heritage and Maritime Artifacts holds the rare collections of the old world. It is also a home for the regal history of the educational mecca for the marine professionals. It brings back the memories of the man and his family who breathe life into half-a-century old school.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf8.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf4.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf1.jpg

The door on the right wing of the library opened revealing numerous pieces of art that occupied the room. Framed paintings in different sizes were everywhere. It was as if the great Louvre was condensed into a small space. Names like Mario Malang, Amorsolo, Lina Llaguno Ciari, and Vitalis, a Filipino painter who was recognized first in France, aesthetically decorated the wall. The oil paintings "Tree in the Moonlight" and "Guimaras" by Dr. Mary Lou Arcelo along with the masterpieces of local Ilonggo brush geniuses and portraits of Juan and Asuncion Lacson, Mary Lou Arcelo, and Teresa Sarabia were placed on a dozen of stands that occupied the room. The Mestiza, an undated sculpture by Antonio Raymundo and the works-of-art from a defunct railway by Fernando Basan were humbly placed next to Pablo Mahinay's marble sculpture and some of Al Soriano's captivating masterpieces.

The stairs on the left wing of the library ended on an archaic door. Along the way, an antiquated image of St. Joseph carrying the baby Jesus was rested adjacent to a round wooden image of Sto. Niño. As the door opened, the history began to unfold. Laterally on the right, an 1891-Bradbury piano was placed near to the old wooden mirror. On the left, two mannequins, male and female, dressed in the traditional Filipino costumes portrayed the conventional courtship. The eye-catching Sto. Niño de Soldado, made out of Ivory, led the amazing assembly of the different kinds of Sto. Nino that were gathered at the center.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf9.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf12.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/03/31/jblcf6.jpg

Further on, the Ah-Tay Bed of Asuncion Jocson-Lacson where she gave birth to her children including Juan was rested on the middle of the parquet floor. The bed that was made during the 19th century by a Chinese furniture-maker in Binondo to whom the bed was named after. The Tres Marias Dresser beside the bed was equally old. A porcelain basin and granite pots and a medium-sized mirror served as the washing area for the people in the past. The breath-taking gowns worn by Dr. Mary Lou Lacson-Arcelo on several significant occasions were glamorously displayed while the elegant fabrics like hablon, jusi, and sinamay na piña were arranged on an antique drawer.

Age-old charcoal irons will greet the visitors prior to entering the Pantao area. The long dining table carries the family's precious utensils. Old pictures of the family with a family tree covered the wall that divides the dining area and the marine artifacts room.

A transparent door served as an entrance to the most expensive part of the museum. The room was full of sparkling jewelries and timeless porcelains. Three masses of box-like glass that secures the valuable pieces of history filled the navel of the room. In the red velvety cloth rest the Pomara, a floral stud with gem stones from Mindoro, that was dated back to 1000 to 1300 AD. The Panika Tube Hoops (1300 to 1500 AD) from Samara was settled together with the parts of the dangling earrings that were as old as 1200 to 1400 AD and the Kamagi Necklace of 800 to 1000 AD.

The exquisite Topaz and Emerald Sets, the dateless pair of earrings of Maria Montealegre, the first wife of Captain Lacson, the Rositas Set, The Amethysts Set from India, the Chinese Jade Ring and the luxurious Heirloom jewelries from the grandparents of Jose and Asuncion were humbly laid inside the glass boxes.

The beauteous Carnelian Beads and glass bracelets were undeniably striking. A gold coin that was given as a gift by one of the 60 granddaughters of Datu Piang overlooked the Camphor Jewelry Chest. The Muslim collection including a portable cannon, brass shield and a Muslim Kris regally adorned the floor. The red wall was full of multitudes of amulets . The glass cabinet on the borders of the room served as an abode to the ageless Blue and White porcelain from the Ming and Sung Dynasties. The Orna de Bohol, an aged tabernacle made out of molave, was a head-turner. The sunken treasures of the Sung Dynasty, two Japanese helmet etched with the figures 574, and 14th century potteries completed the one-of-a-kind collection.

Deep into the spacious hall, the air of maritime history was evident. The Dragon Jar, a sunken treasure, leads the enormous number of maritime artifacts. The pottery and earthen wares of the 15th century Ming Dynasty that was recovered from Jolo, Sulu was an attraction. Old cameras and gadgets of Frank J. Lacson, the pilot and photographer brother of Juan narrates the evolution of science though time.

All of the firsts in the history of IMA -- cabinet, books, office table, computer, dictionary, adding machine, European radio, etc. were on display. The sound of the past echoed as the still functioning old phonograph played the classic "Moon River".

The history of JBLCF, traced back from the Aduana in 1948, Rizal and Rotary Park in 1949, La Paz in 1950, Muelle in 1954, Arevalo in 1972 , Bacolod in 1974, and Molo in 1976, was told by the illustrations on the walls.

Old navy knives, ash trays, creamer, saucers and cups, pin and collar insignia of the late Juan Lacson were well-preserved. The brass barometers, field artilleries, binoculars, sextant and telescopes were eternal.

Fossilized shell, preserved piranha, shark teeth and jaw were astonishing. Original alligator heads artistically adorned the floor near the entrance to the Archives. The Archives stores the files and other pertinent data related to JBLCF including the Less Than Noble Intentions, a book written by Dr. Mary Lou Lacson-Arcelo regarding the gallant history of the Lacson Family.

Old instruments from the first IMA Band were seated next to the huge glittering crystal trophy that was given to Dr. Arcelo as the President Emeritus Award.

Library of Cultural Heritage and Maritime Artifacts is indeed an invisible bridge to our almost-forgotten history and a living testimony to the story behind the unprecedented success of JBLCF. The museum is open every Thursdays and on weekdays (by appointment). Take part in discovering the past now.

Thanks
You must be an adobe expert Iamme. Nice work. :)
I noticed you love taking pics at dusk. And oh the Jaro Grand Estates looks like Enchanted Kingdom hehe...
Oo man, I like the dusk pic too
It's grand and beautiful. :)
OO its relatively new and its located along the highway in Jaro ... malapit lang sa Jaro Town Square... Judging for what I've heard of it, daw dako man siya anga project.

Info I found about Jaro Grand Estates ...

Strategically located just 3.3 kilometers away from Jaro Plaza, the 100-hectare
master planned community is proximate to Iloilo City’s major attractions such as colleges
and universities, commercial and business areas, hospitals and government centers, air
and sea ports.
The Jaro Grand Estates integrates several land uses into a singular development.
When completed, it will feature its own commercial and restaurant strip, office and
business center, hotel and tourist center, university area, and five Caribbean themed
residential villages.
Among the modern facilities and amenities envisioned are a modern road
network system highlighted by a 20-meter wide main road, several landscaped parks and
mini-parks, a central park with amphitheater, a Caribbean themed grand clubhouse with
multipurpose courts and playgrounds, paved walkways and covered courts, underground
water and storm drainage system, celebrated entrance gates for each of the five
subdivisions, and a unique land mark entry.
Page 6
6
The first Phase of Jaro Grand Estates is Chateaux Geneva, a 10-hectare middle
class residential community. Development in 2002 and will be completed by the second
half of 2004. It offers 421 lots with cuts ranging from 120 to 250 square meters. There
are six Victorian detached house models featuring one, two and three bedrooms with
floor areas ranging from 45 to 96 square meters.
The second of five exclusive residential communities of Jaro Grand Estates, the
proposed Coastal Villas is a 9-hectare Caribbean village located within the township
development. It will feature around 395 lots with cuts ranging from 120 square meters to
192 square meters. There are three Caribbean house models with the smallest at 79
square meters to the biggest 117 square meters, all single-detached. Construction of
Coastal Villas will commence by the second half of 2004.

Asta lang ko sa gwa, lol.
maybe cause it shows that, that's why i like it heheh
that photo shows iloilo as vibrant and bustling and alive.
im loving the lantern stars too hehe :D
Hi Matteo, loving the lights too. They haven't removed them yet until Feb. for the Chinese New Year :D ... I'm not sure they're still there until now
Mandurriao district. Is this the area opposite Western Visayas Medical Center? Quite a big improvement though.

Gilas project launched

TO ENABLE public school students here to compete on an equal footing with their private school counterparts, the city government has officially launched the Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (Gilas) program early this week.

Gilas is a computerization project for all city public high schools and is sponsored by the Ayala Foundation in cooperation with the city government. The city government earlier produced some P2.4 million to procure computer units and accessories for the use of the city high schools. Of the amount, P1.2-million was resourced by Ayala Foundation from Rex Drilon,
Mario Jalandoni, the family of Juan Miguel Luz, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Amman of Switzerland, and the Filipino Seafood City in San Francisco, California.

The foundation also provided free internet access to beneficiary schools for one year to let public school students experience the information revolution. Internet facilities were offered by service providers like the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company, Globe Innove and Smart Communications.

Beneficiaries of the city project were Fort San Pedro National High School, Iloilo City National High School-Calapran Extension, Jalandoni Memorial High School-Bo. Obrero Extension, Jaro High School-Buntatala Extension, Jaro High School-R.G. Hechanova Extension and SPED-Integrated School for Exceptional Children.

Earlier, the Department the Trade and Industry has given their share of units of computer to Iloilo National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Jalandoni Memorial High School, Jaro National High School, La Paz National High School, Mandurriao High School, Ramon Avanceña National High School.

“This project will give public school students the chance to compete with students from the private schools,” said Mayor Jerry P. Treñas. (Adora Bandorio/PIO)

I agree, when the new international airport opens ... Pavia will be the center of it all :)
I hope to see Pavia rises, too. Pavia, site of the Regional Agro-Industrial Center of Western Visayas should start functioning as one. I hope that the relocation of Iloilo airport would help Pavia and its residents lure more industrial investors and businessmen in the country.

Monte Rosa promoter ka gali Chy. Wow! I'm sure Monte Rosa would be very grateful for you (and your mom) and for including them in your blog. Cheers !

The opening is tonight na gali ... may duty pa kmi bwas sa aga, kanugon, basi di ko makakad2 :)
no news pa about the opening night brouhaha .. hehe.

I agree. I hope those "indicators" will stay as positive as they are. :)

I've passed by the area yesterday ... "no comment" lang anay, hulat lang lang ko kung up and running na ang project ;)
that's right. Good point gid. Let the daily papers talk. Thanks.

looks like Mandurriao is getting a good slice of investment in the city. And it "seems" that Mandurriao district will be the most promising district of Iloilo. Remember, Mandurriao will be the site of the new proposed CBD once the Mandurriao-Iloilo Airport will be transferred to Sta. Barbara. Go Mandurriao !

WHOA! So chaotic during rush hour ... bottle neck gd ang area nga ni
I like the second one better, although the IBH, Medicus building, and the Full Moon was erased wala na unsightly billboards and power lines. Mau gd
Sorry for erasing those buildings.. but that's no full moon.. hehe.. just a dust particle that reflected the flash :) .

The first Phase of Jaro Grand Estates is Chateaux Geneva, a 10-hectare middle class residential community. Development in 2002 and will be completed by the second half of 2004. It offers 421 lots with cuts ranging from 120 to 250 square meters. There are six Victorian detached house models featuring one, two and three bedrooms with floor areas ranging from 45 to 96 square meters.
Here's a picture I took of Chateaux Geneva last year. More houses have been built since then.

On sale? Magkano kaya .. hehe. 'kala may pambili ano? The area where this heritage house is located is considered highly commercial ... sana they'll maintain the house na lang and add up diutay to enhance its features. Huwag naman sang sirain.
I heard Sen. Manny Villar has already purchased this house and lot. I suppose he's out to resell it now. The house was repainted entirely before it was put on sale, so I don't think they plan to destroy it. :)

Here's another worthwhile picture I found in my files. This was taken about three years ago, but I think the place still looks pretty much the same.

Taxi drivers as tourism frontliners, goodwill guiding, 2nd Iloilo IAD, etc.

The Department of Tourism Region VI led by Regional Director Edwin G. Trompeta in cooperation with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Region VI and Association of Taxi Operators in Panay (ATOP), Inc. has embarked on a series of seminars-trainings for taxi drivers as tourism frontliners starting March 28, 2006 and every other Tuesday thereafter until August 1, 2006. The venue of the seminar-training is the Mandiga Conference Hall, DOT Region VI Bldg., Bonifacio Drive, Iloilo City. Target participants are 500 taxi drivers for the 10 seminar-training sessions that make up the first batch. There are more than 2,000 taxi drivers operating in Panay.

The seminar portion of the one-day 'taxi drivers as tourism frontliners' project is an introduction to tourism, its significance and the taxi drivers' part in the tourism system by RD Edwin Trompeta himself or, in his absence, this writer. The frontliners' human relations, inquiry handling, personality, grooming, speech skills as well as the qualities and roles of taxi drivers as tourism frontliners are taught by Yehlen Camarista, herself a frontliner of note in the tourism industry of Western Visayas being a professional tour guide/lecturer-trainer licensed by the city government of Iloilo and accredited by the Department of Tourism. Skills on basic tour guiding are imparted to the taxi drivers by Willie Genciana, former vice president of Rajah Tours and now Professor in the Institute of HRM and Tourism, Central Philippine University. Backgrounder on the tourist spots in Iloilo and the other provinces of Panay were also discussed by Miss Camarista and Mr. Genciana to equip the taxi drivers knowledge on the tourist spots they pass along the way or visited by their passengers from day to day.

The seminar-training for taxi drivers in Panay is just one of the many projects in the DOT VI's campaign to make Western Visayas more tourist- friendly even as it develops new products designed to attract more tourists. It maybe recalled that during the recent 2-day Western Visayas Regional Tourism Summit held at Sarabia Manor Hotel Iloilo City, resource speakers led by Atty. Osar P. Palabyab, DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Services and Regional Offices noted that this region has established its strong hold in the domestic and foreign tourist markets as evidenced by tourist arrival figures. Western Visayas ranks third as a destination after the National Capital Region (NCR) and Central Visayas (Region VII).

The DOT Region VI also conducts trainings for professional tour guides and goodwill guides and other frontliners in Western Visayas. It conducted a training for the frontliners of Bacolod City during its hosting of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) and a seminar on goodwill guiding and frontline skills for the tourism officers of Aklan and personnel of the jetty port in Catiklan, Malay, Aklan late last year. Early this year, a goodwill guiding seminar was conducted for officials and employees, municipal tourism council officers and student leaders of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

Seminars for sales clerks of the pasalubong centers and souvenir shops and personnel of money changers and other tourism frontliners are in the planning stage. Meanwhile, the DOT Region VI is preparing the module for tourism awareness and capability building seminars in the Western Visayas countryside starting with the 2nd Iloilo Integrated Area Development (2nd IAD) composed of five (5) cluster municipalities of the 2nd District of Iloilo, namely, Alimodian, Leon, San Miguel, New Lucena and Sta. Barbara. These cluster municipalities have identified the development of tourism industry as their one common thrust and will start off with the drafting of the 2nd IAD Tourism Master Plan.

Yes, of course it was edited.. hehe.. I just wanted to show that if they could only limit the putting up of billboards in the city, the place would look much less stressful.
I agree with you IAMME ... those two pics you've posted earlier (the edited and the unedited one), okay gid. It simply shows the vibrancy of the city. Hopefully billboards will be regulated (Iguess the city government had approved a resolution regarding this matter) in our city soon.

I haven't got much choice but to take pictures at dusk, the rest of the day I'm in class.. hehe... But really, the lighting at these times can be really great.
good pics man gihapon .. salamt sa liwat.

I was hesitant to post this picture taken inside Southville because the people there might not appreciate it (privacy stuff..) but here goes:

It's THE ATRIUM MALL, tagacebuako. it's situated right at the heart of the city. The Atrium is a five-storey building. The first three levels is a mall whilst the 4th and 5th level is occupied by the Days Hotel Iloilo.

Pride of Place : Summer streetwalking discoveries

First posted 11:22pm (Mla time) April 02, 2006

Inquirer

Editor's Note: Published on page D4 of the April 3, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

GET OUT OF THE MALLS AND go streetwalking this summer. There is nothing like discovering the Philippine city, whether it be Manila, Cebu, Baguio, or whatever city you happen to find yourself in.

Actually each city has a story of its own, one that can be felt with the senses while walking, and the more you discover the story the more it comes to life. Some accurately call it feeling the pulse of the city.

Each city and each neighborhood within the city has a story of its own and therefore beats with an individual pulse.

There is a languid feel when experiencing Manila's Pasig River from the river walk along densely forested Arroceros Park that reminds you of Josè Rizal's late 19th-century descriptions of the beloved river.

On the opposite bank of the river is one of the business centers of Manila. There energy bristles. It presents another face of the city where the pulse is understandably different.

The pulse of a city is a combination of many things that take place within the protective envelope of a series of homes and buildings that form the urbanscape.

Within the vast urbanscape of each city, neighborhoods are pockets that reflect the distinct lifestyles of their inhabitants.

These are streetscapes inhabited and colored by the people-their visuals, sounds, smells and tastes that together illustrate the pulse of that particular section of the city.

A market neighborhood is obviously different from a purely residential neighborhood. A neighborhood of houses has a character totally unlike that of a skyscraper neighborhood.

Ethnic neighborhoods add a different flavor to the city. These are places where everything changes from the ordinary, the people, their sights, sounds, smells and cuisine.

In ethnic neighborhoods, you may find things out of the ordinary, as well as exotica and shops stocked with interesting goods.

Walking is really the only way to discover your city. Walk when the sun is not at its summer peak, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

During the noon hours, you may enjoy a slow, long lunch in the coolest place you can find. Stay there as long as they will let you. Allow the sun to start cooling off before you go back on the street.

Where to walk? Try your neighborhood first. Take a fresh look at what you have always taken for granted-the same old houses, sidewalks, rutted streets-but see how they tell the story of your neighborhood.

Are there still houses from a few generations ago? Have these houses been replaced with newer ones? Has the neighborhood gone commercial? Have shop spaces been built in the big front yards? On the other hand, discover how wonderful those front yards may still exist.

Are there special things to buy in your neighborhood? Are there homes, shops or restaurants that sell unusual food?

What makes your neighborhood extraordinary? How would it stand out compared to the other sections of the city?

If you heed help, a good guidebook that can navigate you around Manila is "Street-Bound" by Josefina Manahan, published by Anvil Publishing.

Manahan lists various types of walks around Manila that allow people to appreciate nature (yes, there still is some of it in the city), history, culture, and of course, non-mall shopping.

All of Manahan's walks take you through Manila, bringing out the pulse of the city that can never be duplicated in any of the malls.

Walking tour guides

If you would rather be walked around the city, then contact either Ivan ManDy at oldmanilawalks@gmail.com or Carlos Celdran. Both do walking tours.

Ivan calls himself a Streetwalker. He takes people on walks through Tsinoy Binondo in central Manila.

He has another walk at the Chinese Cemetery showing that the cemetery is probably the city's most comprehensive architectural museum and also the honor the Chinese community accords its ancestors.

Tsinoy culture comes to life when he does unforgettable food walks through the kitchens of Binondo for a memorable encounter with the Chinese culture of taste.

Carlos Celdran presents his own take on Manila, sometimes irreverent, but always humorous and engaging.

When he tackles the CCP Complex, he brings out the Marcos mania for iconic architecture. He walks you through Intramuros, develops nostalgia for bygone days while doing a reality check on the ilustrado lifestyle.

I really don't know who can walk people through Cebu, Vigan, Iloilo and other places outside of Manila. I am sure that those people exist and ask them to drop me an e-mail.

When I find out who they are and after trying out their walks, then I will publish the contact information of the more interesting walkers.

it did to me, too. he he. I hope to see more pics here.
nice to see all these pictures coming .. from Chymera and IAMME of course. Hope we can contribute, too, someday. I'll try to take more pics magpauli ko .. basi man lang ma-develop akon photogtaphy skills ... hehehe.

it's really good. keep 'em coming.
amo gid Jon. Tulok na lang ta ya kay wala man kita mai-contribute sa mga pictures. Next time na lang ...

pwede rin. You can post it in there and let the people gues .. hehe.
sa diin na? sa Guess the City thread?

the only building I can recognise is th Robinson's Place Iloilo. Sorry guys.
I could not recognise anything at all from afar ... hehehe.

that's right. It's less chaotic for me.
absolutely right. Dapat gid man may ara kita regulation sa bagay nga ini ... masabad ang damo billboards. Magamo sa panulokan especially kung naga-drive ka.

good colour contrast gid man tuod.
pwede na pang-postcard no? Sin-o gani nagapamangkot about sa postcard, etc ah?

if things wriiten below will "all" pushed through ... it's indeed a big project, Chymera.
big development in Jaro area towards Leganes na. Di ba dira ina pakadto sa leganes area? Nalabayan ina namaon sang pakadto kami sa Roxas City and Passi City. Area along that highway were almost filled up na with new subdivisons and small commercial buildings. I guess in few years time, damo pa gid development nga makita naton between Jaro and Leganes.

you're luckier than me. Wala pa ko kalabay dira nga area iya.
kung sa labay lang, nakalabay na ko da several times going to Molo district.pero secluded ang village nga ina so you can barely seen it from the main road ... mangilala ta da Jon para makasulod man ta ... hehehe.

Good. Then Mandurriao is really doing well. Salamat.
Ngaa abi mo Jaro lang kag La Paz? hehehe .. Mandurriao has a fair share din sa development sang city. Like what Chymera told me few months ago, "remember that SM City, Smallville, et are located in Mandurriao District and so with the newest branch of Iloilo Supermart". Tuod gid man .. Mandurriao used to be a housing district of the city pero it is slowly turning into a commercial area as well like Jaro and LaPaz. With the closing of the old airport, Mandurriao will shine more due to the plan CBD within the area. Let's see what else Mandurriao could offer .. :)

I agree Jon. Let's not set our eyes off Oton. It's slowly changing without giving a lot of noises. Oton is the biggest of the four towns considered to be part of the initial Metropolitan Iloilo area. Right now, it houses the biggest first-class community in the province. The municipal proper is also catering some commercial establishments .. but like Pavia, it is still groping .. hehe.

Please do. It'll be a big help gid.
agree.

of course it is. Iloilo every year produces thousand of graduates from its six universities and several tertiaries institutions. We need to help find jobs for our fellow Ilonggos. Hopefully, our provincial economy will be sustainable and/or improving.
kabay pa. These graduates need placements, etc so dapat sustainable gid aton ekonomiya sa Iloilo. We're producing thousands of professionals each year, paano na lang kung wala investors makadto di sa ciudad kag probinsiya .. well, abroad is the key, isn't it? ... hehehe.

looks the area is well-kept. That's good. I liked it that way. Shades for everyone in a day. Tani may mga cafe bars man lapit dira no? Btw, there's a pizza parlour near Plaza Libertad. It's just a walking distance. Nalipat lang ako sang ngalan. That pizza place seemed to be occupying the old mansion within that area.
i forgot the name as well. But we went their two years ago courtesy by our barkada before she left for US. Namit gid man ila pizza .. and mas manami gid man magkaon to kung gab-i ... the place is a bit elitist in nature pero worth it.

Undeniably YES.That and everyhting there is .. can't be denied. Kung sa Brits-NHS pa, evidence-based.
oh please ... hehehe.

Really? No idea what's business he owned in Iloilo. Above anything else, he's a mover and that really matters.
I'm glad he's around though. Trenas could not make without their support. Cheers !

that's right. It's there for a reason (log in sa forum), just joking.
hehehe .. no comment Jon.

it's dragging .. he he he. A year na lang gid. I'm sure by mid-next year, masako na gid ang probinsiya. There's a good shift of economy. Mind you, the province will be earning more sa airport nga ini. Ang city naman will earn twice or fourfolds considering with the success of the bidding proper.
whoever wins the bid .. congrats in advance. Nadugayan man ko gani .. tani pagpauli ko didto na mahugpa ang eroplano sa Sta Barbara. Jan 2007, really looking forward to go home.

That's a challenge for ePLDT Ventus. I hope they'll continue expnading their capacity. I'm sure, human resource is not a problem at all in our city.
a thousand seats? That's good. I hope they'll expand to their maximum. :)

W. Visayas has a potential to be RP's center for aquaculture, agriculture: Angara
By Ruby P. Silubrico

SENATOR Edgardo Angara last Saturday said Western Visayas has a potential to be the country's basket capital for agriculture and aquaculture.

Angara, during a ground breaking ceremony in Dumangas, Iloilo for a fish processing plant, said that Panay Island especially Iloilo could be a prosperous region in the country if its natural resources would be developed.

"Western Visayas has a capability to be Philippines' capital for aqua culture, agriculture and livestock because in this region especially Iloilo have all these from foods, vegetables, corns, rice, fishes, livestock --- everything," Angara.

He said that the communities in Panay Island as well as its tourism players must get involved to develop and intensify production. He also stressed the importance of improving the region's accommodations, peace and order, roads, seaports and quest for good health.

"There's no reason why WV should not be a prosperous region in the country especially Iloilo," he added.

"Aquaculture including fishponds and other historical sites are here. Everything is here in the region. They just need promoting by the DOT. Visitors and investors will come in."

Negros Occidental is known for its sugarcane; Iloilo for rice and agriculture; Capiz for seafoods and Guimaras for export-quality mangoes.

Distura's 3M trading center project inaugurated
By Ruby P. Silubrico

DUMANGAS Mayor Rolando Distura's P3-million trading center in Barangay Balabag was inaugurated last Friday and no less than Senator Edgardo Angara graced this.

The project consisted of an ice plant that can produce 10 metric tons of ice, a first class slaughterhouse, and a bagsakan or fish-trading center for the province. The fish center would also include processing if fish for export.

"I have been dreaming that Dumangas would be the Economic Trading Center of Iloilo. This could help our post harvest program and our valued products like bangus (milkfish). The center would facilitate the expanded deboning of bangus," Distura said.

"This would be a source of livelihood for the people of Dumangas and the rest of the province. This will support to the country's program, the modernization of agricultural fisheries and we appeal investors to invest in our town," he added.

This program was done through the support of the local government of Dumangas, former senator Ramon Magsaysay, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar), Department of Agriculture (DA) and late Congressman Narciso Monfort of the 4th District of Iloilo.

I was passing by at this thread and reminded me of Iloilo. Any picture of Gaisano Iloilo. The last time I was there was 10 years ago when I was involved in the supervision of the construction of Gaisano Iloilo. During that time I am a frequent visitor of Breakthrough sa Jaro and Baybay, Marina, Tatoys and Buto't Balat. How I miss the people and the food. The people are malambings and the food are namit gid.
There's one picture in previous thread. Are you talking about Gaisano Iloilo (the old one in Guanco) or the Gaisano City Iloilo in LaPaz? Hope you can visit us in Iloilo again. All restos you've mentioned above are still existing (as far as I know) and are well-patronized, too. Cheers !
